Where and Why is Grounded Reasoning Useful?

David Yan, Le Xue, Forrest Huang, Qiuyi Zhang, Dustin Tran, Andrew M. Dai, Yinfei Yang

Grounded reasoning, where a model outputs text coordinates of relevant locations in chain-of-thought reasoning, is a common strategy for solving complex visual reasoning problems. However, the benefits and limitations of grounded reasoning are understudied. We study where and why grounded reasoning is most useful. To do so, we introduce a chain-of-thought analysis method to measure how much a model uses its outputted grounding in its thinking trace and perform a detailed ablation study of a grounded reasoning training recipe. We find that grounded reasoning improves counting but shows no significant gain over baselines without coordinate grounding across a wide range of spatial reasoning and perception benchmarks. Using several synthetic tasks, we show that grounded reasoning is most useful when a task requires undescribable references, which are visual concepts that are difficult to describe in language. However, we observe that many existing visual reasoning benchmarks are solvable with only describable text references. To close this gap, we introduce BrickVision, a new benchmark that requires undescribable visual references to solve.

Beyond Gait: Person Identification from Millimeter-Wave Point Clouds Across Activities of Daily Living

Xilai Wang, Zixiong Han, Saad Rhanmouni, Chenzhe Zhao, Yunze Lu, Miodrag Bolic

Person identification from millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar point clouds has primarily focused on gait. However, since indoor walking is typically brief and fragmented, gait-based identification is largely constrained to designated passages that support continuous walking. Meanwhile, non-gait activities of daily living (ADLs) are pervasive and also encode discriminative personal signatures. In this study, we evaluate the feasibility of ADL-based identification from sparse mmWave point clouds using mm-ADL, a dataset comprising seven core ADLs collected from 11 subjects under controlled protocols. Moving beyond uniform gait introduces significant activity-dependent variations that confound identity representations. To address this challenge, we systematically benchmark three activity-identity learning paradigms: monolithic learning, joint multi-task learning, and two-stage activity-conditioned routing, under both closed-set identification (ID) and subject-disjoint re-identification (ReID) biometric settings. In parallel, we propose Dual-Stream Static-Dynamic PointNet (DS-SDPNet), an architecture tailored to radar point clouds that captures complementary spatial morphology and motion dynamics. Across seven ADLs, DS-SDPNet achieves 70.2% mean closed-set identification accuracy and outperforms existing baselines on both mm-ADL and mmGait. Moreover, benchmarking the three paradigms without ground-truth activity labels during inference yields up to 68.0% closed-set accuracy and 75.4% ReID mAP, providing a systematic baseline and confirming the feasibility of point-cloud-based biometric identification across diverse daily activities.

Towards Scalable Diagnostic-Driven Whole-Slide Image Retrieval for Pathology Archives

Jingsong Liu, Youssef Wally Han Li, Weiwei Zhou, Jing Dai, Elisabeth Wetzer, Peter J. Schüffler

The growing adoption of digital pathology has rapidly expanded collections of hematoxylin-and-eosin whole-slide images, yet efficient navigation through these archives remains challenging, as metadata is often inconsistent or unavailable. Content-based image retrieval addresses this challenge by identifying similar cases directly from visual representations instead of manual annotations or metadata. Existing retrieval systems have demonstrated promising performance but largely rely on handcrafted indexing pipelines and predefined sampling strategies, constraining scalability and generalization. Here, we present CLEAR-WSI (Constant-Length Embedding for Automatic Retrieval of Whole-Slide Images) as a scalable, diagnostic-driven slide-retrieval framework, validated on both public and clinical data. Using a fixed-length slide embedding, CLEAR-WSI refines retrieved candidates with either a predicted diagnostic label or the ground-truth label, depending on the retrieval setting. Newly processed cases are subsequently added to the expanding memory bank, allowing the retrieval archive to grow over time. On a comprehensive benchmark consisting of two public and one private clinical datasets representing four retrieval tasks, CLEAR-WSI improves Precision@5 over the strongest evaluated baseline, with gains on CAMELYON16 (3.10), BRACS-1 (2.75), BRACS-2 (1.95), and X-HER2 (3.75). Additional ablation and latency studies further examine the contribution of each component and highlight its potential for scalable deployment.

Multimodal Information Interactions Bottleneck for Multimodal Self-Supervised Learning

Liangjian Wen, Jiangtao Zheng, Jiang Duan, Qun Dai, Yong Dai, Jianzhuang Liu, Jun Wang, Shu-Dong Huang 等 11 位作者

Multimodal self-supervised learning is challenged by heterogeneity, unequal informativeness, and complex information interactions across multimodal data sources such as images, text, audio, and tabular data. While contrastive methods effectively align shared semantics, they typically rely on strong multi-view redundancy assumptions, overlooking modality-specific and synergistic information, thus leading to suboptimal representations. We propose the Multimodal Information Interactions Bottleneck (MIIB), a principled framework grounded in Partial Information Decomposition that explicitly encodes redundant, unique, and synergistic information within multimodal interactions. MIIB employs a dual-path model architecture for modality-specific encoding and multimodal fusion, optimized using surrogate tractable entropy-based objectives that enforce minimal sufficient representations without requiring explicit mutual information estimation. By leveraging variational bounds and score-based entropy estimation, MIIB efficiently captures complex cross-modal interactions while suppressing superfluous information. Experiments across diverse benchmarks demonstrate consistent improvements over state-of-the-art multimodal self-supervised methods. Code is available at https://github.com/wanglingzaishi/MIIB.

InfMasking: A Unified Variational Framework for Synergistic Multimodal Learning

Liangjian Wen, Qun Dai, Jiang Duan, Yong Dai, Jianzhuang Liu, Dongkai Wang, Jun Wang, Fuyuan Cao 等 10 位作者

Multimodal models are expected to exploit synergistic information, that is, information available only when multiple modalities are observed together. In practice, however, a fusion module can fit the training objective by relying on a dominant modality or on information that modalities share, and the synergy between modalities is often left unused. We propose InfMasking, a unified multimodal learning framework based on Infinite Masking. Before fusion, InfMasking randomly masks the features of each modality; each sampled mask produces a different partial combination of cross-modal evidence and a fused representation of the corresponding modality interactions. All masked fused representations are required to remain consistent with a reference target: the unmasked fused view when training is unsupervised, and the class proxy of the task label when labels are available. Maintaining this consistency across diverse partial combinations discourages reliance on a dominant modality or on shared information alone, and drives the fusion module to learn cross-modal interaction patterns that remain meaningful under partial observations. Since the objective is an expectation over infinitely many masks, we model the masked fused representations as Gaussian and optimize closed-form variational bounds, whose population-moment gaps are controlled by the masking-induced covariance under this model. On the evaluated benchmarks, InfMasking improves predictive performance and yields higher mean PID estimates of task-label synergy in learned modality-specific representations, alongside higher InterSHAP interaction attribution in the trained predictors. Code is available at https://github.com/brightest66/InfMasking.

Egocentric Action Recognition with Objects and Vision-Language Affordances

Raúl Boix-Aldeguer, Manuel Benavent-Lledo, David Ortiz-Perez, Jose Garcia-Rodriguez

Action recognition, and more specifically egocentric action recognition, is a core task in computer vision, with applications such as monitoring the daily life activities of elderly people and task assistance. Recent methods rely on visual modalities such as RGB video or depth. However, in egocentric video, an action is largely defined by its objects, which these methods rarely model. We propose a method that combines a frozen SlowFast video expert with an attention-based object expert by late fusion. Each object is represented with its affordances, that is, what can be done with it, generated zero-shot by a vision-language model. Since datasets such as MECCANO annotate only the objects involved in each action, evaluating with these boxes tells the model which objects are active. We therefore train on annotated boxes and evaluate the method with detections from the official active-object detector, and with annotated boxes as an upper bound. Without affordances, our fusion reaches 68.4% Top-1 with annotated boxes but 49.0% with detections. About half of this drop comes from non-active detections. To remove them, the same vision-language model generates an interaction affordance that decides whether a hand is manipulating each detected object. On MECCANO, objects raise the Top-1 of the video expert from 44.9% to 49.0%, and the two affordances raise it to 49.9%, above SlowFast and object-aware RGB baselines. Code will be released upon acceptance.

Building age estimation based on widely available multi-source geospatial data

Jialu Sui, Hongsheng Zhang, Rui Liu, Jing Ling, Ruisheng Wang, Hao Wu, Gang Chen

Building age is fundamental for urban infrastructure safety, operation, and planning, as it directly affects structural safety, and sustainable development. Existing methods mostly rely on detailed building information such as street view, function, or materials, which are harder to obtain than geospatial data like satellite imagery and Digital Surface Models (DSMs). However, existing methods based on those geospatial data mainly rely on optical imagery and local texture features, limiting their ability to capture structural information and distinguish buildings from different periods. Moreover, the inherent temporal ordering among building age categories is often overlooked. To address these limitations, we propose the first deep-learning framework for multi-building age estimation using widely available multi-source geospatial data, including remote sensing data and their derived products, as well as building footprint information that estimates age at both pixel and instance levels within a unified pipeline. Specifically, a large pretrained backbone with fine-tuning adapters extracts representative features, and raster-derived and property-derived fusion modules support pixel-wise and instance-wise predictions. Pixel-level estimation employs a pyramid decoder with Cosine-guided Mixture-of-Experts (CMoE) to fuse multi-source raster data across scales, capturing fine-grained building age differences, while instance-level prediction uses attention pooling and Property-Conditional Adaptive Instance Normalization (PCAdaIN) to extract instance-level representations and integrate property attributes. A Temporal Ordinal Constraint Loss (TOCL) enforces the sequential ordering of predicted ages. We also construct a building age benchmark for Hong Kong to enable comprehensive evaluation. The source code and datasets are available at https://github.com/littlebeen/RS-buildingAge.git.

PSGAgent: Enhancing MLLMs' Dynamic Visual Perception for Panoptic Scene Graph Generation via Agentic Reasoning

Qingyun Liu, Yuankun Liu, Jiaye Feng, Jie Huang, Zonghong Dai, Haochen Li, Jingkun Wang, Weiping Li 等 9 位作者

Panoptic Scene Graph generation (PSG) requires holistic yet fine-grained reasoning over complex relations among objects. However, current Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) applied to PSG suffer from a perception bottleneck: they function as static observers limited by fixed-resolution views. As a result, models often overlook critical relations involving small or peripheral objects and struggle to differentiate ambiguous predicates in complex scenes. To address these limitations, we propose PSGAgent, an agentic framework that enhances visual perception for PSG through a think-act-observe loop. PSGAgent allows MLLMs to dynamically refine their visual perception using two tools: a Region Zoom-In Tool for local exploration of small or boundary relations and a Visual Highlight Tool for relation-focused segmentation that filters out irrelevant contextual noise. To optimize decision-making, we construct a two-stage training pipeline. First, we create a high-quality, error-aware Multimodal Chain-of-Thought (M-CoT) dataset that provides robust supervision for cold-start learning. Then, we design a novel hierarchical reward mechanism integrated with Group Sequence Policy Optimization (GSPO) to enable strategic and adaptive tool usage. Extensive experiments on the PSG benchmark show that PSGAgent achieves SOTA performance, demonstrating strong capability in both holistic and fine-grained scene understanding.

Discovering Semantic Granularity in Images through Clustering of Pretrained Visual Representations

Ying Dai

Semantic granularity, which refers to the levels at which visual representations organize image content into meaningful entities, is fundamental to image understanding. However, whether pretrained visual representations inherently encode semantic structures at multiple granularities remains poorly understood. This paper presents a representation-driven approach for discovering semantically meaningful image regions at different granularities through clustering of pretrained visual representations without semantic supervision. Specifically, we concatenate selected feature maps extracted from a pretrained visual model and apply a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based projection to derive pixel-wise principal representation map tensor (PRMs). The resulting PRMs captures latent semantic structures embedded in pretrained visual representations, making them accessible to subsequent semantic clustering. We then introduce the semantic continuity rate (SCR), based on the silhouette principle, to quantify the clustering behavior of PRMs at different candidate granularities. Furthermore, we analyze the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of SCR profiles to assess the PRMs suitability for discovering semantic-like meaningful regions at multiple granularities. Our results indicate that PRMs exhibiting a higher proportion of relatively high SNR values over an initial range of cluster numbers tend to yield more semantically meaningful regions across multiple granularities. We evaluate the proposed approach on the COCO-2017 and VOC-2012 validation datasets using Hungarian-matched intersection over union (HIoU). The results demonstrate competitive segmentation performance among the compared methods, supporting the feasibility of discovering useful semantic granularities through clustering PRMs without semantic supervision.

TV-AudioRemover: Joint Text-Visual Guided Sound Removal with Multi-Task Hard-Mixture Curriculum

Xinyue Guo, Jianxuan Yang, Daiguo Zhou, Jiagao Hu, Yuxuan Chen, Fei Wang, Jian Luan

Visual object removal can eliminate a target from video frames, yet its acoustic trace persists in the soundtrack, causing obvious audio-visual inconsistency. Existing video inpainting models operate solely on pixels, while audio editing models, especially for the sound removal task, are typically driven by text and therefore rely on limited single-modal control, which is less effective than multimodal guidance that provides stronger semantic grounding and temporal synchronization cues. In this paper, we present Text-Visual Guided Sound Removal (TV-AudioRemover), a target sound removal framework that leverages the visually edited video together with a natural-language instruction to suppress the sound associated with the removed visual object from the original audio mixture. To acquire high-quality training data, we devise a pipeline to construct a million-scale dataset of single-object audio-visual aligned samples, from which we synthesize mixture-target pairs customized for model training. To effectively leverage visual context and follow instruction intent, we augment the model architecture with task tokens, generalizable instruction modeling, and modality-specific global guidance. We further adopt multi-task training to strengthen task-role comprehension, and employ a hard-mixture curriculum that leverages semantically similar acoustic mixtures during fine-tuning to enhance fine-grained source discrimination. To support evaluation, we present AV-Remove-Bench, a comprehensive audio-visual object removal benchmark, along with dedicated objective metrics and an MLLM-based evaluation protocol. Experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on both subjective and objective metrics. Project page: https://yjx-research.github.io/TV-AudioRemover/.

Semantic Residual Vector Quantization for Sign Language Generation

Chang Liu, Ke Han, Niccolò Biondi, Gloria Isotton, Elisa Ricci, Davide Talon, Nicu Sebe

Sign language generation (SLG) maps written sentences into signing motion while preserving both lexical content and fine-grained articulation. This requires a model to decide what signs should be expressed and to realize them through precise handshape, trajectory, facial expression and body coordination. Existing pose-based systems and reconstruction-only motion tokenizers often entangle these two decisions, leaving the generator without an explicit text-aligned intermediate target for what to sign before refining how to sign it. To address this issue, we introduce Semantic Residual Vector Quantization (SRVQ), a framework for SLG that frames generation as a two-level process moving from semantics to kinematics. The newly introduced SRV Quantizer learns a hierarchy in which the first residual level encodes sign content and subsequent levels refine pose, handshape, trajectory, and body coordination, all within a single quantizer and without separate semantic representations or external planning stages. Through word-aware conditioning for hierarchical code generation, a masked semantic generator predicts semantic codes and a kinematic generator completes the residual codes for full SMPL-X motion synthesis. We evaluate using retrieval and FID in a shared text-motion embedding space, alongside standard geometric metrics. On CSL-Daily and Phoenix-2014T, SRVQ achieves R@1 of 82.3 and 70.3, outperforming the previous SOTA by 30 and 46 points, respectively.

A Diffusion-Based Kinematics and Dynamics Model for 3D Sign Language Production

Emanuele Colonna, Moises Diaz, Gennaro Vessio, Miguel Angel Ferrer, Giovanna Castellano

Sign Language Production (SLP) generates continuous signing from a linguistic input and drives accessibility technologies such as signing avatars. Current generators, diffusion models included, regress joint coordinates as an unstructured vector, so nothing ensures that the generated body respects anatomy or the mechanics of movement. Physics has entered SLP only through geometric loss terms, whose benefit for intelligibility has not been verified, and the dynamics of the signing body has not been modelled. We present PIDiffSign, a diffusion model informed by physics at two levels. For kinematics, a forward-kinematics head outputs bone directions and lengths and composes them into an anatomically exact skeleton. For dynamics, a rigid-body model of the upper body with anthropometric parameters supports two training priors. A physical-plausibility suite that includes two laws of motor control evaluates the generated signing. Under a controlled protocol, the head lowers back-translation word error rate by about five points on PHOENIX14T and CSL-Daily, whereas geometric penalties have no measurable effect; a control experiment traces the gain to the kinematic-chain representation and not to bone-length conservation. The dynamics priors gain about one further point over matched non-physical controls on PHOENIX14T, but not on CSL-Daily. Generated signing follows the laws of motor control as closely as real signing but carries markedly less kinetic energy. The exact skeletons can drive rigged avatars directly, and the suite offers a physical benchmark for future SLP systems.

Agent-Driven Generative Priors for Pathology Image Synthesis and Segmentation

Sicheng Yang, Rui Tang, Haipeng Zhou, Hongqiu Wang, Zhaohu Xing, Jianda Ma, Lie Dai, Guang Yang 等 9 位作者

Deep learning methods for pathology are constrained by the limited availability and high cost of large-scale pixel-level annotations. Synthetic data can alleviate this limitation, but existing pipelines often lack reliable quality control and remain weakly connected to downstream analysis. To address these issues, we propose a three-stage framework that integrates automated data screening, generative representation learning, and efficient adaptation to downstream tasks. First, we develop a pathology agent system to assess image quality and filter samples, resulting in TCGA-200K, a dataset containing 217,030 pathology patches selected from the public TCGA repository. Second, we train a generative model on the screened data. In addition to image synthesis, its backbone learns structural and semantic representations that can be transferred to downstream tasks. Third, we adapt the pretrained generative backbone to semantic segmentation using a lightweight task-specific head. We further introduce PathSeg-380K, a semantic segmentation dataset with expert annotations for approximately 380,000 cells across 12 cell types. Experiments on multiple pathology datasets show that the proposed framework achieves state-of-the-art segmentation performance. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/script-Yang/Agent-GenPath.

STARE: Scene Text-Aware multimodal Retrieval for Everyday objects

Kento Tokura, Ryosuke Korekata, Daichi Yashima, Kei Katsumata, Kanon Amemiya, Miyu Goko, Komei Sugiura

In this study, we focus on service robots that retrieve and transport everyday objects based on free-form instructions that may refer to visual features and scene text. This is challenging because it requires a multimodal understanding of the visual features and spatial relationships of objects, as well as scene text embedded in the environment. To address this, we propose Scene Text-Aware multimodal Retrieval for Everyday objects (STARE), which leverages visual and textual cues in response to free-form instructions. STARE introduces Crosslingual Visual Prompt to enhance scene text interpretation, and models the complex relationships between named entities in the instructions and their corresponding objects. We evaluate STARE using two novel benchmarks, GoGetIt and TextCaps-test, both of which consist of real-world indoor/outdoor images and instructions involving object manipulation and navigation. The results show that STARE outperforms all baseline methods on standard multimodal retrieval metrics. Furthermore, in physical experiments conducted under a zero-shot transfer setting, STARE achieves an overall success rate of 80%. Our project page and code are provided in the Supplementary Materials.

手语生成中的条件坍缩:一项诊断与覆盖度论证

Conditional Collapse in Sign Language Production: A Diagnostic and a Coverage Argument

Rui Hong, Jana Košecká

AI 速览:作者提出用三个独立层级诊断手语生成模型的条件坍缩问题,并论证目标忠实度取决于训练句对测试条件的覆盖密度而非语料规模。

The goal of Sign Language Production (SLP) is to translate natural language text into corresponding sign language movements performed by a virtual avatar. The quality of the generated motion is typically evaluated by a motion-space Frechet distance (FID) and back-translation BLEU score on benchmarks such as How2Sign. The existing approaches can improve both metrics substantially while the underlying generator fails to represent the input sentence, a failure we call conditional collapse. In this work we propose to evaluate the generated motion at three independent levels: (tau1) initial-pose conditioning, (tau2) output diversity, and (tau3) target faithfulness. We compute these as pairwise-distance ratios using latent representations of a frozen motion autoencoder (MoAE), judged against each dataset's own GT-vs-GT reference. We evaluate diffusion and regression SLP models on How2Sign, including a re-implemented Neural Sign Actors, and show that tau3 faithfulness is never attained, while FID varies by nearly two orders of magnitude and is uncorrelated with faithfulness. We then apply the same models and diagnostic to Phoenix-2014T, CSL-Daily, and gloss-level ASL3DWord and show that faithfulness varies proportionally to how densely the training sentences cover the test conditions (conditioning coverage) and not corpus size. The smaller but densely covered Phoenix-2014T and ASL3DWord datasets generate faithful sign motion, while CSL-Daily follows the input text yet falls short of sign language faithfulness. Using the largest, open-domain How2Sign dataset, the models collapse at every scale. We introduce two measurements of the text data that rank the corpora in the order of how densely the training sentences fill the embedding space, and how close each test sentence lies to its nearest training sentence.

Exploring Student Perception on Gen AI Adoption in Higher Education: A Descriptive Study

Harpreet Singh, Jaspreet Singh, Satwant Singh, Rupinder Singh, Shamim Ibne Shahid, Mohammad Hassan, Tayarani Najaran

The rapid proliferation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping pedagogical practices and assessment models in higher education. While institutional and educator perspectives on GenAI integration are increasingly documented, the student perspective remains comparatively underexplored. This study examines how students perceive, use, and evaluate GenAI within their academic practices, focusing on usage patterns, perceived benefits, and expectations for institutional support. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 436 postgraduate Computer Science students at the University of Hertfordshire and analysed using descriptive methods. The findings reveal a Confidence-Competence Paradox: although more than 60% of students report high familiarity with tools such as ChatGPT, daily academic use remains limited and confidence in effective application is only moderate. Students primarily employ GenAI for cognitive scaffolding tasks, including concept clarification and brainstorming, rather than fully automated content generation. At the same time, respondents express concerns regarding data privacy, reliability of AI-generated information, and the potential erosion of critical thinking skills. The results also indicate strong student support for integrating AI literacy into curricula and programme Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs). Overall, the study suggests that universities should move beyond a policing approach to GenAI and adopt a pedagogical framework that emphasises AI literacy, ethical guidance, and equitable access to AI tools.

PATTS: Parallel-Aware Test-Time Scaling for Thought-Image Generation in Multimodal Discrete Diffusion LLMs

Yasong Dai, Zeeshan Hayder, David Ahmedt-Aristizabal, Hongdong Li

Test-time scaling (TTS) improves generative models by allocating additional inference-time computation to sampling, search, and verification. Existing image generation approaches, however, typically rank completed images or image-centric intermediate states. We study TTS for parallel multimodal discrete diffusion language models, in which reasoning tokens and image tokens are decoded jointly within a single generation trajectory. We first diagnose a limitation of conventional final-image selection: on GenEval, a CLIP-style image-prompt score is weakly aligned with within-prompt compositional correctness, leaving substantial headroom between verifier selection and oracle selection. We then propose PATTS, a novel parallel-aware TTS framework that searches over intermediate thought-image states using cross-modal verifier signals. PATTS uses a state-dependent reliability weight, derived from model-internal trajectory diagnostics, to modulate the influence of external semantic verification during generation. In the fixed N=32 evaluation on MMaDA-Parallel, the PATTS reaches a GenEval score of 0.844, compared with 0.628 without TTS, 0.787 for Best-of-N, and 0.810 for FKD. These results show that reliability-aware trajectory verification can improve test-time selection for parallel thought-image co-generation under the evaluated search budget. Our code release is at https://github.com/Ringo-Star/PATTS.git

Behind Video Generation: Observations and Insights on Multimodal Understanding from Kling

Kling Team, Dong Chen, Jialu Chen, Xinlong Chen, Yifan Dai, Haotian Dong, Binzong Geng, Yushuo Guan 等 53 位作者

Video generation has progressed from isolated clips to coherent short-form audiovisual sequences, and the bottleneck is shifting from rendering to semantic control. This report summarizes the observations and insights on multimodal understanding gained from successive generations of Kling. We argue that generation quality is the projection of multimodal understanding through the entire data--conditioning--alignment--evaluation chain, and we examine this chain module by module. Kling-MLLM, a shared multimodal foundation model that unifies image, video, audio, synchronized audio--video, and interleaved inputs, is specialized for each downstream module. Because a DiT is trained on far fewer training samples than a language model, we treat captioning as a semantic contract that maximizes description density, and extend it to reference-grounded captioning that makes reference bindings explicit. Prompt enhancement translates user intent into this caption distribution: basic PE is derived from captions of compelling videos and refined with text-level and generator-in-the-loop reinforcement learning, while agentic PE refines the story and retrieves compelling examples. We show that a reliable text encoder comes from perceptual training rather than from stronger language ability, and that candidates can be screened from text alone before end-to-end training. Reward modeling pairs a general reward model for explainable, localized critiques with a decision reward model for fast multidimensional scoring, treating perceptual bandwidth as a first-class design parameter. Finally, we review task-specific automatic evaluation, focusing on protocols that expose scoring shortcuts and help trace failures to their upstream source. We hope these lessons offer practical guidance for building the understanding stack behind controllable video generation.

Learning to Falsify: Hierarchical Multiple Instance Learning for High Resolution AI-Generated Image Detection

Haoran Chen, Daiqi Gao, Xinyuan Li, Yongwei Wang, Lei Zhu, Rui Cai, Jianfeng Dong

Recent advances in generative models have made synthetic images increasingly photorealistic, posing growing challenges to reliable and generalizable detection of AI-generated images. Existing methods typically rely on holistic image-level classification, which may overlook local artifacts, especially in high-resolution images. To address this limitation, we formulate this task as a falsification-driven multiple instance learning problem, where a single fake patch can falsify the whole image, while a real image requires all patches to be authentic. Based on this formulation, we propose \textit{Learning to Falsify (LTF)}, a hierarchical multiple instance learning framework that models an image as multiple bags of instances across different spatial levels and aggregates their predictions under the falsification-inspired principle. We further introduce Cross-Shuffle during training to encourage the model to learn local artifact evidence rather than image-level shortcuts. Furthermore, we propose the \textit{Falsification-driven Test-time Aggregation Strategy (FATAS)}, a plug-and-play module that extends the same falsification-inspired principle to existing detectors by aggregating patch-level predictions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that LTF achieves strong generalization and robustness across multiple benchmarks, while FATAS substantially improves representative detectors in high-resolution scenarios without retraining. Code is available at https://github.com/HuiGuanLab/LTF.git

Using GeoAI and machine learning tools for consistent high-resolution land cover mapping based on time-series NAIP imagery

Jie Liu, Xusheng Tang, Chao Wang, Zhengxiao Yan, Yuchen Dai, Qi Zhang, Conghe Song

High-resolution land-cover maps support ecological monitoring, but consistent historical time series remain scarce because aerial imagery varies across years and sensors. We developed a dual-track workflow to produce temporally coherent 1-m land-cover maps from National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery without historical training samples. For higher-quality imagery from 2009-2017, we used a pretrained U-Net/ResNet-34 model and refined boundaries with the Segment Anything Model (SAM). For lower-quality imagery from 2004-2008, we reconstructed land cover through an NLCD-based spatiotemporal bridging and label back-casting pipeline. Evaluation across six counties in North Carolina and Pennsylvania yielded overall accuracies of 0.887 (2014), 0.886 (2017), and 0.733 (2004). Structure, Water, Wetland, and Cropland consistently achieved high F1-scores. The workflow integrates GeoAI and multiple data sources to address temporal heterogeneity in historical aerial imagery, supporting high-resolution land-change analysis and landscape planning across the conterminous United States.

The advancement of multimodal learning is heavily constrained by the scarcity and high annotation cost of high-quality instruction data. While raw videos offer an abundant and dynamic source of visual knowledge, transforming them into precise instruction data remains highly challenging. To bridge this gap, we present VidUEU-Agent, an automated pipeline that synthesizes instruction data from raw videos for multimodal understanding, editing, and unified tasks. VidUEU-Agent follows a four-stage pipeline: it performs global perception to filter low-quality shots, mines keyframes and multimodal signals, constructs metadata and routes the metadata to synthesize instruction samples. More importantly, our agent framework can autonomously iterate the data distribution based on downstream training results, thereby optimizing data quality, balance, and training effectiveness. Scaling this pipeline, we construct VidUEU-100K, a large-scale dataset of 100K training samples spanning multiple domains and tasks, providing a robust foundation for developing comprehensive multimodal capabilities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that fine-tuning baseline models on VidUEU-100K yields significant and consistent performance gains across diverse representative benchmarks, validating the effectiveness of our proposed agent framework and dataset.

ScienceVision: Can AI Observe and Reason Like a Scientist?

Tianyi Ma, Jing Gu, Haozhe Zhao, Liang Chen, Yunfan Zhang, Haijun Su, Jialong Wu, Le Xue 等 13 位作者

Scientific discovery builds on accurate observations interpreted through domain knowledge and reasoning. For scientific 3D data, this requires understanding structures and spatial relationships, from protein contacts to anatomical organization. Existing multimodal benchmarks largely evaluate text and 2D images, while scientific 3D evaluations vary in representations and protocols across disciplines, limiting cross-disciplinary comparison. To assess these foundational capabilities, we introduce ScienceVision, a cross-domain benchmark for scientific 3D understanding and reasoning through expert-level visual question answering (VQA). We construct 250 questions, with 50 each from Biology, Chemistry, Medical Imaging, Mechanical CAD, and Architecture, through a pipeline combining synthetic question generation with domain-expert review and annotation. Each task pairs a native 3D artifact with a scientific question, a specified response format, and a task-specific reference answer, requiring domain knowledge to be applied to geometric or topological evidence. We evaluate 12 models on the same questions in three settings: visual question answering with native 3D artifacts accessed through an agent harness's file and code-execution tools; the same workflow augmented with expert-inspired viewer inspection and measurement tools exposed through the Model Context Protocol (MCP); and visual question answering from prescribed rendered 2D images using an agent harness. All settings use the same task-specific deterministic final-answer scoring. The inspection environment supports view changes, target isolation, and slice inspection. In this main comparison, the best mean answer score is 0.53 out of 1. Mean scores in the native-artifact workflow without additional MCP tools exceed those in the rendered-image workflow for every model, by 17.2 percentage points on average.

RIPE-MambaSpike: Resolution-Independent Spiking-State-Space Interfaces for Parameter-Efficient Event-Based Vision

Md Muhiminul Islam, Shoaib Ahmed Dipu, Sayeed Shafayet Chowdhury

Spiking-Mamba hybrids reach strong accuracy on event-based vision, but existing designs often require tens of millions of parameters. Much of that cost comes from how the spiking front-end is connected to the state-space backbone rather than from the hybrid architecture itself. In a representative model, a single resolution-dependent projection accounts for 33.55M of 36.25M parameters. To that end, we introduce RIPE-MambaSpike (Resolution-Independent, Parameter-Efficient), which replaces that projection with a hierarchical multi-resolution bridge of fixed channel width. Its deployed footprint is 0.870M parameters, constant at fixed time steps and widths across a 43x range of input areas. Reparameterized spiking stages, temporal decoupled modulation, and a dynamic convex-hull-bounded dual-stream membrane-potential attention preserve accuracy under this compact design. Result-wise, RIPE-MambaSpike is pareto-optimal on CIFAR10-DVS, N-Caltech101, and DailyDVS-200. Notably, on the 200-class DailyDVS-200, a scaled 8.04M configuration achieves 45.7% top-1 accuracy, the best reported spiking result on that benchmark, and outperforms prior spiking methods with 3.0-15.1x fewer parameters than dense ANNs. Overall, our findings demonstrate that competitive event-based recognition does not require resolution-dependent parameter growth. Code is available at https://github.com/MuhiminOsim/RIPE-MambaSpike.

VERIDAH: Solving Enumeration Anomaly Aware Vertebra Labeling across Imaging Sequences

Hendrik Möller, Hanna Schoen, Robert Graf, Matan Atad, Nathan Molinier, Anjany Sekuboyina, Bettina K. Budai, Fabian Bamberg 等 17 位作者

The human spine commonly consists of seven cervical, twelve thoracic, and five lumbar vertebrae. However, enumeration anomalies may result in individuals having eleven or thirteen thoracic vertebrae and four or six lumbar vertebrae. Although the identification of enumeration anomalies has potential clinical implications for chronic back pain and operation planning, the thoracolumbar junction is often poorly assessed and rarely described in clinical reports. Additionally, even though multiple deep-learning-based vertebra labeling algorithms exist, there is a lack of methods to automatically label enumeration anomalies. Our work closes that gap by introducing "Vertebra Identification with Anomaly Handling" (VERIDAH), a novel vertebra labeling algorithm based on multiple classification heads combined with a weighted vertebra sequence prediction algorithm. We show that our approach surpasses existing models on T2w TSE sagittal (98.30% vs. 94.24% of subjects with all vertebrae correctly labeled, p < 0.001) and CT imaging (99.18% vs. 77.26% of subjects with all vertebrae correctly labeled, p < 0.001) and works in arbitrary field-of-view images. VERIDAH correctly labeled the presence 2 Möller et al. of thoracic enumeration anomalies in 87.80% and 96.30% of T2w and CT images, respectively, and lumbar enumeration anomalies in 94.48% and 97.22% for T2w and CT, respectively. Our code and models are available at: https://github.com/Hendrik-code/spineps.

EV9V: An Echocardiographic Video Benchmark with Uncertainty Guided View Classification

Bo Gou, Jicheng Zhang, Jianlong Xiong, Tao He, Hai Wu, Bentian Liu, Yijiao Wang, Yu Zhang 等 13 位作者

Automated classification of standard echocardiographic views is crucial for efficient clinical workflow but faces three main challenges. First, publicly available datasets are scarce and limited in scale and view coverage. Second, the performance of some modern video-level architectures for echocardiographic view classification remains underexplored. Third, some view categories exhibit highly similar spatial appearances, making single-frame features insufficient for discrimination, while heterogeneous frame quality complicates robust temporal information fusion. To address these challenges, we release the Echocardiographic Videos of Nine Views (EV9V) dataset, comprising 5,138 videos, 910,579 frames, and 9 standard views, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest openly released echocardiography video dataset. Furthermore, we propose a Spatio-Temporal Fusion Model (STFM), an efficient dual-stream framework that jointly captures spatial anatomical structures and temporal cardiac dynamics. The STFM leverages uncertainty-aware learning to preferentially sample representative video segments during training and evidence-based fusion during inference, improving robustness to variations in frame quality across echocardiographic videos. Extensive experiments demonstrate that STFM achieves competitive performance and effectiveness compared with diverse video classification architectures, including two-dimensional and three-dimensional convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and Transformers. The code is released at https://huggingface.co/datasets/bgx666/EV9V and the EV9V dataset is available at https://github.com/bgx666/stfm.

How to Peel with a Knife: Aligning Fine-Grained Manipulation with Human Preference

Toru Lin, Shuying Deng, Zhao-Heng Yin, Pieter Abbeel, Jitendra Malik

Many essential manipulation tasks - such as food preparation, surgery, and craftsmanship - remain difficult for autonomous robots. These tasks are characterized not only by contact-rich, force-sensitive dynamics, but also by their "implicit" success criteria: unlike pick-and-place, task quality in these domains is continuous and subjective (e.g. how well a potato is peeled), making quantitative evaluation and reward design difficult. We present a learning framework for such tasks, using peeling with a knife as a representative example. Our approach follows a two-stage pipeline: first, we learn a robust initial policy via force-aware data collection and imitation learning, enabling generalization across object variations; second, we refine the policy through preference-based finetuning using a learned reward model that combines quantitative task metrics with qualitative human feedback, aligning policy behavior with human-evaluated task quality. Using only 50~200 peeling trajectories, our system achieves 100% same-produce success on cucumbers, apples, and potatoes, with performance improving by up to 40% through preference-based finetuning. Remarkably, policies trained on one produce category also transfer zero-shot to selected held-out produce categories, achieving 50% success on zucchini, 90% on pear, and 80% on daikon radish.

Understand Before Detect: Vision--Language Learning for Omni-Domain Infrared Small Target Detection

Haoyang Yuan, Boyang Li, Yingqian Wang, Yimian Dai, Nuo Chen, Xinfei Huang, Shuqi Yi, Zaiping Lin 等 10 位作者

Omni-domain infrared small target (IRST) detection is crucial for infrared surveillance, yet remains challenging due to heterogeneous imaging domains and inconsistent target characteristics. Previous deep learning-based methods have been developed for visual-only paradigms and achieved promising performance on domain-specific tasks. However, existing methods follow the task-specific supervised learning paradigm. This paradigm simplifies the full-scene infrared observations to sparse target supervision, discarding the semantics that remain invariant across heterogeneous domains. Consequently, detection performance suffers substantially under domain shifts. To handle this issue, we introduce \textbf{``understand before detect''}, a paradigm that formulates omni-domain IRST detection as an understanding-driven process, where holistic infrared target understanding precedes precise detection. Building on this paradigm, we propose \textbf{JinSight}, which first develops holistic IRST understanding through language supervision and then transfers the learned cross-domain representations to precise small-target detection. By grounding infrared representations in language semantics, JinSight enables a single model to generalize across heterogeneous infrared domains. We then introduce Latent Semantic Interaction (LSI), which exchanges language-aligned global semantics with fine-grained spatial features in a compact low-rank space. To address the lack of multimodal omni-domain IRST benchmarks, we build \textbf{OmniIRST-VL}, the first large-scale, highly diverse vision--language dataset for omni-domain IRST detection. It comprises over 39k annotations across six complementary instruction tasks covering both scene-level understanding and target-centric reasoning.

Autoregressive Image Generation with Linear Complexity: A Spatial-Aware Decay Perspective

Yuxin Mao, Zhen Qin, Jinxing Zhou, Hui Deng, Xuyang Shen, Bin Fan, Jing Zhang, Yiran Zhong 等 9 位作者

Autoregressive (AR) models have recently emerged as a promising paradigm for image generation, as they can model visual tokens through the same next-token prediction principle that underlies large language models. However, most competitive AR image generators still rely on Transformer attention, whose quadratic token interaction cost and growing key-value cache become increasingly expensive for high-resolution visual sequences. Linear attention provides an attractive route to efficient AR generation, but our study shows that directly importing linear or decay-based attention from language modeling leads to clear quality degradation. We identify a key cause: after a 2D token map is flattened by raster scan, 1D sequence locality no longer faithfully reflects spatial locality, and conventional decay mechanisms may introduce a false-locality bias at row transitions. To address this problem, we propose Linear Attention with Spatial-Aware Decay (LASAD), a simple recurrent attention mechanism that modulates decay according to the original 2D token geometry while preserving linear complexity. Built upon this layer, LASADGen replaces standard attention in an AR image generator with spatial-aware linear attention. Experiments on ImageNet demonstrate that LASADGen achieves a favorable quality-efficiency tradeoff, improving generation quality over linear-attention baselines while reducing inference cost and memory usage compared with Transformer-based AR models.

Background: Digital health technologies allow for frequent, remote gait monitoring in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, to differentiate daily variability from actual disease progression in longitudinal data, established minimal clinically important differences (MCID) are required. Currently, there is limited literature defining these thresholds for digital gait metrics. Objective: To establish MCIDs for digital gait measures reflecting progression in MS. Methods: Digital gait measures were captured via daily, remote, smartphone-based Two-Minute Walk Tests in CONSONANCE (NCT03523858), a phase 3b study of ocrelizumab in progressive MS. Using an anchor-based approach, median changes from baseline at Week 96 on digital gait measures were computed for patients showing clinically meaningful worsening on either Timed 25-Foot Walk, Ambulation Score, Expanded Disability Status Scale, or 12-item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale. These changes were subsequently triangulated to derive the MCID estimates. Results: 243 patients with progressive MS (female: n=125 (51%); mean [SD] age: 49.3 [9.3]; mean [SD] EDSS: 4.8 [1.4]) had digital gait data available at baseline and Week 96. Median changes were generally consistent across anchors. Triangulated MCIDs are: Step Velocity = -0.16 m/s, Step Velocity Scaled to Walking Time = -0.18 m/s, Step Duration = 0.06 s, Step Length = -0.07 m, Total Number of Steps = -28, and Total Distance Walked = -24 m. Conclusion: These MCIDs provide a framework for interpreting meaningful gait changes and integrating digital measures into MS outcome evaluation. Beyond facilitating novel clinical trial endpoints to evaluate treatment efficacy, they enable objective, real-world monitoring to advance personalized patient care.

GaitFM: A Cross-Modal Foundation Model for Wearable Gait Assessment

Yize Cai, Zhiqing Hong

Gait assessment supports the diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis of diverse movement-related conditions, such as neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Recent advances in deep learning using everyday wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer an accessible and low-cost approach to automated gait assessment. However, IMU measurements vary substantially across individuals, body locations, and device configurations, while existing deep learning models are typically developed using small, homogeneous datasets for specific clinical tasks, limiting their robustness and generalizability in diverse real-world contexts. Here we present GaitFM, a cross-modal foundation model for gait assessment using IMU sensors. GaitFM improves the generalizability of gait assessment by transferring knowledge from large vision models and pretraining on unlabeled IMU sensor data. We pretrain GaitFM on a large curated dataset comprising about 4,000 participants and 1.23 million gait windows across diverse clinical and daily conditions, sensor modalities, and body locations. GaitFM demonstrates strong performance across 18 gait-related tasks, including 3 gait parameter estimation tasks, 14 disease and gait abnormality detection tasks, and 1 clinical outcome prediction task. Furthermore, GaitFM generalizes across different sensor configurations and body locations, including those commonly used in clinical settings and everyday wearable devices. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of transferring visual knowledge in improving sensor-based gait assessment performance, offering a new promising pathway for addressing data scarcity in the sensor and medical domains.
