Quantification of Tail-trimming Effects for Interval CVaR Based Nonlinear Regression

Yulei You, Junyi Liu

AI 速览:该文从理论上量化了In-CVaR风险度量对损失右尾的截断在非线性回归抗异常值中的必要性与有效性。

The tail trimming strategy is widely adopted for robustness against outlier contamination in statistical learning and operations research. However, it generally lacks the thorough understanding that to what extent the tail-trimming technique is effective for nonlinear regression. In this paper, we address the robust nonlinear regression based on the so-called interval conditional value-at-risk (In-CVaR), which is introduced to guard against outliers by trimming extreme losses. We first analyze the trimming effect of the In-CVaR based estimator under distributional perturbation. Our first finding is that the In-CVaR based estimator is qualitatively robust under distributional perturbation in terms of the Prokhorov metric if and only if the largest portion of losses is trimmed. Furthermore, under sample contamination, we derive a probably approximately correct (PAC) bound for the In-CVaR based estimator, showing that the preliminary covariate filtering that is customary in the literature is not needed for In-CVaR based regression. The nonconvexity of the In-CVaR objective, together with unboundedness of covariates, responses and parameter space create the technical challenges for our developed theory, and thus necessitate the new treatment of the qualitative robustness and PAC analysis. Overall, this study rigorously analyzes robustness properties of In-CVaR based nonlinear regression models, which illustrates to what extent the right tail-trimming of the loss by In-CVaR risk measure is essential and effective for robust nonlinear regression. These theoretical findings are further supported by numerical experiments.

S$^3$R: Fast and Faithful RL Rollouts via Self-Sparse Speculative Decoding

Yuhang He, Hongyu Ge, Zihan Lin, Siyi Liu, Yongqi Zhang

Fast rollout generation for long-context reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) requires reducing KV-cache traffic without changing the response groups used for policy optimization. In our profiled RLVR workloads, attention accounts for 72--76\% of autoregressive decoding kernel time. Sparse attention reduces these reads, but sampling directly from a sparse policy changes the response groups used for learning. For group-relative optimization, we show that even exact response-wise reweighting does not generally recover the expected dense-policy update because the advantage of each response depends on the rewards of other group members. We propose Self-Sparse Speculative Rollouts (S$^3$R). It uses sparse attention to propose tokens, then generates responses through full-attention verification and exact speculative sampling. Drafting and verification share the same policy parameter, eliminating the need to train or update a separate drafter. The resulting response groups follow the dense-policy distribution. Under S$^3$R, we characterize speedup conditions and the costs of drafting and verification. We found that dense verification still requires the complete historical KV cache. A KV-aware scheduler therefore limits KV-cache repeated offloading and restoration while maintaining rollout parallelism. % OR thrashing In a matched ablation with an aggressive sparse drafting budget, S$^3$R maintains stable training while direct sparse sampling with training-side correction becomes unstable. On long-context mathematical reasoning, S$^3$R achieves $1.39\times~1.35\times$ the end-to-end training throughput of autoregressive rollouts on Qwen3 model, with comparable task performance.

Infinite Quantiles Inference under Local Differential Privacy

Yi Liu, Qirui Hu

We study simultaneous quantile inference under local differential privacy for a number of target probabilities that grows with the sample size. Each user participates once, so learning unknown quantile locations and calibrating their joint uncertainty must share the same private information. We fuse complementary cumulative distribution function (CDF) scores from a single tree report using their exact covariance; the variance at the correct anchor is no larger than that of either score, and anchor error incurs only quadratic excess variance. Three consecutive cohorts then localize the quantiles, estimate their densities, and supply fresh scores for a one-step correction and joint multiplier calibration. Under mild conditions, a uniform representation controls localization and density errors and yields asymptotically valid simultaneous coverage. A fixed-privacy regime permits every polynomially growing target grid. Simulations show consistent same-report precision gains, while comparisons with CDF-band inversion expose the sample cost of learning target locations. Census microdata illustrates how the resulting joint intervals support wage-percentile ratios.

MAVEN: A Macro-Societal Value Evaluation Framework of Multimodal Content with Compact Aligned Evaluators

Zijuan Zhao, Zheren Fu, Hou Xia, Licheng Zhang, Yi Liu, Zhendong Mao

Assessing whether multimodal content aligns with macro-societal values, such as peace, justice, and freedom, has become an increasingly urgent challenge. Existing frameworks are largely confined to safety-oriented taxonomies, text-only psychometric probes, or single-label classification. Therefore, we propose MAVEN, a hierarchical framework for macro-societal value evaluation of multimodal content, grounded in international human-rights instruments and cultural value theory. MAVEN organizes values into 6 primary dimensions and 72 secondary indicators, supporting multi-level quantitative scoring. Building on MAVEN, we construct a human-verified multimodal benchmark and a soft-match metric to evaluate VLMs' assessments across value dimensions. For evaluator optimization, we propose a span-adaptive variant of multi-level preference optimization for evaluator distillation, together with a training-free multi-role consensus strategy at inference time. We evaluate existing open- and closed-source VLMs on our benchmark, revealing shared tendencies and clear differences in macro-societal value judgments. Experiments show that our compact 2B evaluator matches its 8B counterpart in the same family and approaches frontier closed-source VLMs, offering a practical path toward scalable macro-societal value evaluation. Our SA-MDPO implementation and MacroValue-Bench are available at https://github.com/zzzzzzzzjj/MAVEN.

QD-PINN:A Physics-Informed Neural Network Approach to Bayesian Quickest Detection in High-Dimensional Diffusions

Hang Ye, Yi Liu, Haipeng Xing

Quickest detection problems (QDPs) arise in a wide range of applications. However, the complementarity structure of the associated variational inequalities poses substantial challenges for traditional numerical methods, particularly in high-dimensional settings. We propose a PINN-based framework for estimating the optimal stopping boundary in QDPs with high-dimensional diffusion processes and spatial dependence, while overcoming the curse of dimensionality. Theoretically, we establish a novel equivalence between the free-boundary PDE and an infinite-dimensional stochastic optimization problem, rigorously justifying the use of finite-dimensional neural networks to approximate the true solution. Furthermore, we assess the robustness of the proposed framework by quantifying uncertainty in the learned stopping boundaries using deep ensembles and Monte Carlo dropout. The results show low variability across independent training runs and stochastic forward passes, indicating stable and consistent boundary estimates. We also compare our PINN results with reference numerical solutions where available and find close agreement.

Does LLM Pre-Training Typically Occur at the Edge of Stability?

Yuhang Cai, Haodong Wen, Haofeng Huang, Deyi Liu, Yiyuan Ma, Kaifeng Lyu

Quadratic approximations provide a common lens for studying neural network optimization, but recent evidence challenges their predictive validity. In full-batch gradient descent with learning rate (LR) $η$, Cohen et al. (2021) observed the Edge of Stability (EoS), where the largest Hessian eigenvalue concentrates near $2/η$, seemingly at odds with classical stability conditions predicted by quadratic approximations. In this work, we revisit the fidelity of quadratic approximations as a model of neural network training dynamics, with a particular focus on their failure modes in LLM training. We first highlight a distinct failure mode of the quadratic approximation, where persistent negative curvature causes the quadratic dynamics to diverge regardless of the LR, even though the real dynamics remain stable. We term this phenomenon the Edge of Convexity (EoC). After removing the effect of this LR-independent instability, we then propose a generalized definition of Edge of Stability (EoS) for stochastic training with adaptive optimizers, based on whether increasing the LR induces significant divergence in the quadratic dynamics while leaving the real dynamics largely unchanged. Across different LLM pretraining runs with various model sizes up to 787M, we find that (1) EoC is always observed across LLM pretraining, and (2) EoS is also prevalent but not universal: it disappears when the LR becomes sufficiently small (e.g., after decay) or when the batch size falls below a critical threshold that has a positive correlation with the critical batch size. Together, these findings characterize when and how quadratic approximations fail and provide a foundation for future work on understanding training dynamics.

Work Agents: Systems, Capabilities, and Optimization

Zishan Xu, Enjun Du, Mingqi Gao, Cheng Yang, Junhao Shen, Zirong Chen, Zhiyuan Yao, Yifu Guo 等 16 位作者

As foundation models evolve from information generation to digital work execution, agents are increasingly capable of completing complex tasks across tools, applications, and workflows. However, existing research lacks a unified perspective on how agents reliably accomplish delegated work. To address this gap, we present a work-centric, system-level perspective that views work agents as systems combining foundation models and runtime harnesses to execute tasks in stateful workspaces and deliver verifiable outcomes. We introduce two complementary dimensions, work persistence and work openness, to characterize working conditions, and classify digital work into five forms according to task scope and organization. Building on this framework, we identify five core capability families required for reliable work execution and examine approaches to model optimization, harness optimization, and their joint optimization. We further analyze existing evaluation methods and metrics from the perspective of work outcomes. Finally, we discuss future research directions, including sustained work delegation, adaptation to open environments, and the interaction between work execution and capability improvement. This paper provides a unified framework for understanding, optimizing, and evaluating work agents, supporting the development of systems capable of delivering reliable, verifiable, and practically valuable work outcomes.
