HARN: Hierarchical Associative Resonance Network for Event-Driven Multi-Timeframe Forecasting

Nabeel Ahmad Saidd

Live financial forecasting must synchronize asynchronous bar completions across timeframes without using stale or unavailable information. We introduce HARN (Hierarchical Associative Resonance Network), an event-driven architecture that anchors each event to the finest configured timeframe and maintains persistent states and matrix-valued associative memories across temporal levels. Its timestamp-masked transition updates a level only when its completed-bar timestamp matches the current anchor, preserving inactive representations. HARN integrates causal multi-scale encoding, residual-driven gated associative writes, all-to-all cross-level resonance, and ordered bottom-up evidence aggregation to produce forecasts at each temporal level. Predictions are expressed as basis-point changes and reconstructed on the price scale for evaluation. We evaluate HARN on four assets spanning equities, foreign exchange, and gold (AAPL, EURUSD, USDCHF, and XAUUSD), using chronological 70/15/15 splits, 32-bar lookbacks, one-step horizons, and three random seeds. HARN obtains lower anchor-timeframe test mean absolute errors (MAEs) than the evaluated single-timeframe PatchTST and TimeXer baselines on all four assets. HARN's MAEs are 0.508, 0.000306, 0.000263, and 2.552, respectively; PatchTST records 2.074, 0.000759, 0.000638, and 9.563, while TimeXer records 2.882, 0.010838, 0.014144, and 15.297. These descriptive comparisons do not isolate architectural effects from differences in inputs, target formulations, or training procedures. Single-run component ablations on AAPL and EURUSD show small, non-monotonic differences. The results demonstrate HARN's feasibility for asynchronous multi-timeframe forecasting, while motivating controlled comparisons and broader ablations to establish its relative advantages and component contributions.

Every $k$-Quasi-Planar Graph Has Linearly Many Edges

Ankan Sadhu

For every fixed integer $k\ge2$, we prove that every simple graph on $n$ vertices drawn in the plane with no $k$ pairwise crossing edges has at most $C_kn$ edges, where $C_k$ depends only on $k$. We allow any finite number of proper crossings between two edges, including edges with a common endpoint. For $n\ge3$, removing a small disk around each vertex turns the drawing into a family of arcs on a sphere with $n$ boundary circles. Each arc joins two different boundary circles, and different edges have different unordered pairs of endpoint circles. The arcs are therefore essential and pairwise nonhomotopic, with endpoints allowed to move along their boundary circles during a homotopy. Any family of pairwise intersecting lifts to the universal cover projects to distinct graph edges that cross pairwise. Its size is consequently at most $k-1$. Beeker and Lazarovich's theorem on surface patterns then bounds the number of arcs. Their estimate is linear in the size of a triangulation, and an explicit triangulation of the $n$-holed sphere has linearly many edges and triangles.

Token-as-a-Utility: A Model-Agnostic Architecture for Metering and Provisioning AI Inference Services

Yichiet Aun, Soung-Yue Liew, Yu Liang Lai, Jing Jie Tan, Dong Chen, Purnomo Husnul Khotimah

Token-based subscriptions are emerging as a commercial model for large language model inference, but extending them into interoperable utility services requires comparable consumption accounting. Raw token counts do not consistently measure inference resource use because demand varies with model architecture, context length, tokenisation, and concurrent serving conditions. This paper presents Token-as-a-Utility, a model-agnostic architecture integrating inference metering, service-level-aware provisioning, and inter-operator settlement. We prove that, under batched serving, no per-request meter can be additive, independent of co-resident traffic, and exactly cost-reflective at once. This motivates separating provisioned capacity, metered consumption, and contracted quality into distinct service products. Consumption is expressed in Reference Inference Units (RIUs) derived from prefill and decode demand, while occupancy-indexed operator ratings recover shared serving costs without altering the common unit. Versioned inference records support auditing and re-rating across operators; software-enforced capacity leases and quality-constrained routing enable provisioning on shared accelerators. The resource model is measured on three NVIDIA RTX 5000 Ada GPUs, and multi-tenant behaviour is evaluated with a trace-driven model calibrated to them. For the reference model, occupancy-indexed rating limits statement energy error to 9% under measured traffic, compared with up to 70.5% under fixed-occupancy rating. In calibrated multi-tenant experiments, tenant mispricing decreases from 7.36 times under flat token counting to 2.39 times with RIUs and 1.06 times after occupancy-based reconciliation. These findings demonstrate how portable inference accounting can be combined with load-dependent cost recovery and contract-based provisioning to support heterogeneous inference services across operators.

PhysInsert:基于几何先验与双向物体-场景交互的物理合理物体插入

PhysInsert: Physically Plausible Object Insertion with Geometric Priors and Bidirectional Object-Scene Interactions

Yue Gong, Le Zhang, Rui Chen, Song Chang, Xiaochao Qu, Luoqi Liu, Ting Liu, Yebin Liu

AI 速览:提出 PhysInsert 框架,通过几何引导适配与双向物体-场景空间监督,实现参考图像驱动的物理合理物体插入。

We present PhysInsert, a framework for physically plausible reference-based object insertion that jointly adapts objects and their surrounding scenes. Existing methods often rely on masked inputs, generation-based pairs, or training pairs with limited viewpoint variation, leaving pose and illumination adaptation and bidirectional object-scene interactions insufficiently constrained. We construct the Insert World dataset with strictly aligned Blender-rendered counterfactual pairs and object references across viewpoints and lighting conditions. Building on these data, Geometry-Guided Adaptation couples a VGGT geometry stream with image and text streams under target-scene feature supervision to guide spatially consistent insertion. Complementary 2D Object-Scene Spatial Supervision jointly supervises object occupancy and environmental changes while grounding spatial instructions in object regions through image-text attention. We introduce PhysInsert-Bench with dedicated cross-environment and cross-view cases requiring illumination and pose adaptation beyond appearance copying. Experiments on PhysInsert-Bench and DreamBooth demonstrate improved image fidelity; a user study further shows more accurate placement and improved lighting integration, perspective, and pose plausibility.

超越精选突破:在随机抽样的数学猜想上评估语言模型

Beyond Selected Breakthroughs: Evaluating Language Models on Randomly Sampled Mathematical Conjectures

Helen Jenne, Davis Brown, Jesse He, Henry Kvinge

AI 速览:作者构建 OpenConjecture 数据集,用随机抽样的 200 条 arXiv 猜想以可复现协议测试前沿 GPT 模型,并分析候选解的类型与特征而非做专家验证。

The last year has seen a shift in AI-assisted mathematics, with frontier language models producing proofs of and counterexamples to long-standing open conjectures. However, studying only the current set of major breakthroughs provides an incomplete picture of LLM capabilities and the computational resources needed to achieve reported results. To address this, we introduce a new dataset, OpenConjecture, which collects conjectures from mathematics papers published on the arXiv since February 2026. We use these conjectures as a source of open mathematical problems, and apply frontier GPT models to a random sample of 200 of these conjectures over three passes using a reproducible protocol without problem-specific mathematical guidance. Rather than attempt expert verification of these candidate solutions, we analyze the types of problems for which LLMs produce solutions and the characteristics of these solutions. The models we test produce candidate solutions for roughly 60% of the conjectures, with counterexamples about 1.3 times more common than proofs. We estimate solution novelty, assess how solutions cite and relate to existing literature, and analyze whether the proposed resolution relies on either an error in or underspecification of the conjecture. We find that models sometimes propose resolutions that are outside the authors' intent (e.g., proposing the trivial group as a counterexample) and that a number of proofs follow closely from existing results, but that some resolutions exhibit at least moderate novelty. Our findings underscore the need for evaluations that go beyond correctness to assess fidelity to the intended statement, attribution, and the nature of the mathematical contribution.

Unraveling the Efficacy of Neuron Coverage Criteria on Testing Large Language Models

Xiaoning Ren, Jiayang Song, Chongyang Liu, Jie Li, Lei Ma, Yinxing Xue

Neuron coverage criteria aim to assess test suite quality and guide test input generation, but their effectiveness for Transformer-based language models remains unclear. We evaluate six criteria, including four established and two recent criteria, across encoder-only, decoder-only, and encoder-decoder models. Our evaluation examines error-revealing capability, distribution diversity, sample fairness (category diversity), and guidance for test input generation. The results reveal uneven effectiveness. Erroneous samples provide only 0.32% additional coverage over noise samples, indicating limited sensitivity to adversarial errors. By contrast, coverage criteria effectively assess distribution diversity and sample fairness in 26 and 30 of 33 configurations, respectively. Incorporating neuron-wise coverage guidance into test input generation increases adversarial sample production by only 4.56%. These findings suggest that existing coverage criteria can serve as an antidote for assessing diversity but remain largely a placebo for revealing adversarial errors, particularly when used individually. Their practical value therefore depends on whether these limited benefits justify the computational overhead of testing large Transformer-based models. Our study highlights the need for more robust and efficient coverage criteria tailored to these models, with stronger error-revealing capability and greater value for test generation.

Worse than Random: The Importance of a Baseline for Unsupervised Feature Selection -- Extended Version

Muhammad Rajabinasab, Michael E. Houle, Oussama Chelly, Arthur Zimek

Many novel unsupervised feature selection methods are proposed each year, yet their empirical evaluation is limited to supervised and unsupervised evaluation metrics computed on selected datasets, along with comparisons to existing methods. However, in the absence of an established evaluation baseline, it is difficult to determine the value added to the existing literature by each of these methods, and how effective their underlying approaches are. In this evaluation study, we are using random feature selection as a baseline for evaluating unsupervised feature selection methods. While a random selection of features might seem to be a rather weak baseline, we show in this evaluation study that many of the state-of-the-art methods in unsupervised feature selection are outperformed by random feature selection in both performance and efficiency. Accordingly, we emphasize the strict requirement of considering random feature selection as a baseline in the development process of novel unsupervised feature selection methods, and we encourage the community to develop better evaluation measures for feature selection. Both would help to ensure consistent improvement and realistic assessment.

Softmax Routing Dynamics in Mixture-of-Experts Models: Collapse and Recovery

Shengze Xu, Maolin Deng, Tieyong Zeng

Softmax routing in mixture-of-experts models can concentrate probability on a subset of experts, suppressing access to the others. We study how this concentration forms, why it persists, and how suppressed probabilities recover. For fixed experts, a stationary-loss barrier identifies the face supporting the optimal routed output. In a common-target square-loss model with freely trainable expert outputs, slow adaptation tracks fixed-expert dynamics on finite horizons, while every fixed positive adaptation rate yields an interior routing limit. An exact normal-velocity decomposition separates complementary-expert covariance from relative gradient advantage. Under positive two-sided power bounds along recovery paths, uniform over initial masses, the resulting coefficient's order of vanishing gives logarithmic or power-law recovery times. Integrations of constructed fields reproduce these orders. An exact discrete log-odds identity relates neural updates to threshold crossing. In paired Transformer-MoE training, removing a class-conditional router-gradient contrast delays confirmed recovery and reduces accumulated log-odds on fixed tokens, both with and without capacity constraints.

Maxwell's equations are universal for sparse linear algebra

Yannick Augenstein

Optical and wave-based analog computing has re-emerged as a route to accelerating linear algebra, with metamaterials and photonic circuits shown to invert matrices and solve integral equations. However, it has remained unclear which problems such passive structures can represent, and at what cost, once encoding, precision, conditioning and readout are accounted for. Here, we show that every polynomially conditioned sparse linear system can be compiled into a three-dimensional dielectric -- a cavity filled with lossless, isotropic material of bounded permittivity -- whose time-harmonic response encodes its solution. For $m$ nonzero coefficients, the volume of the structure and the cost of writing it down and reading out the answer scale as $\tilde O(m^{3/2})$, coefficients require only $O(\log m)$ bits, and every field that approximately satisfies Maxwell's equations decodes to an approximate solution. We prove the construction for the continuum equations and give a computer-assisted version for the Yee discretization underlying finite-difference solvers. Read in reverse, it implies that electromagnetic simulation is, up to this overhead, as hard as general sparse linear algebra: a sufficiently fast general-purpose Maxwell solver would yield a faster sparse linear solver.

Indirect Optimal Control for Constructing Libraries of Periodic Trajectories: Application to Bipedal Walking

Maximilian Raff, Kathrin Flaßkamp, C. David Remy

Trajectory optimization is a fundamental tool for generating efficient, dynamically consistent periodic motions, commonly referred to as gaits, in legged locomotion. This paper explores the indirect method of periodic trajectory optimization, emphasizing its application in creating optimal gaits for legged systems and contrasting it with the more common direct method. While the direct method offers implementation flexibility, it is limited by its need for an input space parameterization. In contrast, the indirect method achieves higher accuracy by computing the control input from states and costates along the optimal trajectory. In this work, we tackle the convergence challenges associated with indirect shooting methods by utilizing numerical continuation methods. This is particularly useful for the systematic development of gait libraries. Our contributions include: (1) the formalization of a general periodic trajectory optimization problem that extends existing first-order necessary conditions to a broader range of cost functions and operating conditions; (2) a methodology for efficiently generating optimal gait libraries using single shooting and numerical continuation; (3) a novel approach for reconstructing Lagrange multipliers and costates from passive gaits; (4) a comparative analysis of the indirect and direct shooting methods using a compass-gait walker as a case study, demonstrating the higher accuracy of the indirect method; and (5) demonstrating applicability to the more complex legged robot RABBIT, with ten dynamic states and four inputs. These results establish a systematic indirect optimal control framework for synthesizing families of optimal periodic trajectories in legged locomotion.

Capacity of the Hopfield-Hebbian dynamics with correlated patterns

Mihailo Stojnic

Allowing for small fraction of errors in retrieved stored binary patterns, Hopfield-Hebbian neural network (NN) associative memory dynamics [14] achieves linearly scaled capacity. The famous proportionality constant $α_c\approx 0.14$ is obtained in a large dimensional scenario as the ratio of the number of reliably stored patterns $m$ and the patterns' length $n$ under the assumption that uniformly randomly chosen binary patterns are \emph{independent} among themselves. While such an idealized scenario is now well understood, more practical scenarios with correlated/noisy datasets remaining challenging even for classical statistical mechanics replica approaches. We consider precisely such practical settings where each \emph{archetype} pattern is replaced with $M$ correlated \emph{examples} with parameter $r$ governing the quality of correlation. We develop a powerful Random Duality Theory (RDT) based framework to analyze correlated data and already on the first level of RDT lifting obtain capacity characterizations that remarkably well match behavior exhibited through simulated dynamics. Moreover, characterizations explicitly feature correlation parameters $M$ and $r$, which allows to precisely determine their effects on phase-transitioning behavior of the underlying dynamics. Our results are also a well-fitting complement to the existing literature. Namely, to circumvent challenging statistical mechanics analyses, an alternative combination of spectral and replica methods is considered in [4]. We confirm that [4]'s elegant spectral characterizations are excellent approximations in the low correlated regime. At the same time, we also close the gap in the regimes with higher correlation levels where spectral methods deviate from the practical dynamics performance.

ATI-OPD: Adaptive Teacher Intervention for Stable Long-Sequence On-Policy Distillation

Jiannan Guan, Youxin Jiang, Yutai Hou, Qiguang Chen, Yirong Zeng, Haitao Wang, Dengyun Peng, Zheng Yan 等 12 位作者

On-policy distillation (OPD) trains a student on its own responses using token-level feedback from a teacher. As responses grow longer, the student's prefix can depart from the teacher's own reasoning, weakening its feedback on later tokens. Updates based on this feedback can reinforce the same deviations in later responses and destabilize training. Prior approaches such as length control and loss reweighting limit learning from problematic responses but leave their prefixes unchanged. Fixed cutoffs can also discard later reasoning. We propose \textbf{Adaptive Teacher Intervention for On-Policy Distillation (ATI-OPD)} to improve subsequent teacher guidance by revising the student's reasoning prefix. ATI-OPD replaces the earliest high-disagreement segment with a short teacher segment, then lets the student resume its own reasoning from the revised text. To handle renewed disagreement, it excludes persistently divergent suffixes from the distillation loss while retaining useful student continuation. Training diagnostics show less teacher-student disagreement, fewer gradient spikes, and fewer extremely long responses. Across five mathematical reasoning benchmarks and two teacher-student pairs, ATI-OPD improves average student-only accuracy over standard OPD.

StablePCA: Distributionally Robust Learning of Shared Representations from Multi-Source Data

Zhenyu Wang, Molei Liu, Jing Lei, Francis Bach, Zijian Guo

When synthesizing multi-source high-dimensional data, a key objective is to extract low-dimensional representations that effectively approximate the original features across different sources. Such representations facilitate the discovery of transferable structures and help mitigate systematic biases such as batch effects. We introduce Stable Principal Component Analysis (StablePCA), a distributionally robust framework for constructing stable latent representations by maximizing the worst-case explained variance over multiple sources. A primary challenge in extending classical PCA to the multi-source setting lies in the nonconvex rank constraint, which renders the StablePCA formulation a nonconvex optimization problem. To overcome this challenge, we conduct a convex relaxation of StablePCA and develop an efficient Mirror-Prox algorithm to solve the relaxed problem, with global convergence guarantees. Since the relaxed problem generally differs from the original formulation, we further introduce a data-dependent certificate to assess how well the algorithm solves the original nonconvex problem and establish the condition under which the relaxation is tight. Finally, we explore alternative distributionally robust formulations of multi-source PCA based on different loss functions.

Compact Force Sensor for Dual-UAV Cable-Suspended Payload Transport with Tension-Aware Outer-Loop Control

Andrea Delbene, Giorgio Cannata, Giorgio Carlini, Filippo Sante, Marco Baglietto

Cooperative payload transportation using multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) poses challenges in stability, coordination, and robustness, especially under external disturbances and unmodeled dynamics. This work proposes a dual-UAV payload transportation framework supported by a compact, custom-designed force sensor measuring the interaction force at the UAV cable anchor point. The sensor design and mathematical model are presented, and its performance is characterized through static and dynamic tests evaluating linearity, hysteresis, repeatability, and crossload. The control architecture follows a cascade structure: fast inner loops handle vehicle stabilization, while outer loops are designed to compensate for the measured forces. The approach is validated through simulations and indoor experiments under position uncertainty. Payload-drop and constrained-space tests assess the proposed sensing and control architecture against literature-based distributed references, showing improved stabilization, coordination, and disturbance rejection. A video of the experiments is available at: https://youtu.be/rIw9-fvV8Qw.

Is BatchEnsemble a Single Model? On Calibration and Diversity of Efficient Ensembles

Anton Zamyatin, Patrick Indri, Sagar Malhotra, Thomas Gärtner

In resource-constrained and low-latency settings, uncertainty estimates must be efficiently obtained. Deep Ensembles provide robust epistemic uncertainty (EU) but require training multiple full-size models. BatchEnsemble aims to deliver ensemble-like EU at far lower parameter and memory cost by applying learned rank-1 perturbations to a shared base network. We show that BatchEnsemble not only underperforms Deep Ensembles but closely tracks a single model baseline in terms of accuracy, calibration and out-of-distribution (OOD) detection on CIFAR10/10C/SVHN. A controlled study on MNIST finds members are near-identical in function and parameter space, indicating limited capacity to realize distinct predictive modes. Thus, BatchEnsemble behaves more like a single model than a true ensemble.

A Linear Kernel for Planar Semitotal Domination

Paloma T. de Lima, Lukas Retschmeier

A set of vertices $S$ in a graph $G$ is a semitotal dominating set if $S$ is a dominating set and every vertex in $S$ has a witness, that is, another vertex in $S$ within distance at most two. The Semitotal Domination problem asks whether $G$ admits such a set of size at most $k$. We study this problem parameterized by the solution size. We provide a linear kernel of size $358k$ on planar graphs, a result that adds to several existing linear kernels for other domination variants on planar graphs. Additionally, we show Semitotal Domination is $W[2]$-hard on split graphs, on bipartite graphs and on $t$-claw-free graphs, it is $W[1]$-hard on circle graphs.

TAO: Tool-Aware Joint Scheduling for LLM-Based Agentic Serving

Shuhuai Li, Shengdong Ye, Dongdong Ge, Yinyu Ye, Jianghao Lin

Agentic services alternate between model inference on clustered GPUs and external tools on distributed CPUs. In this scenario, existing systems (1) overlook tool-return readiness in service evaluation, wasting limited resources, and (2) use heuristic strategies to decide admission and placement on GPUs, resulting in suboptimal scheduling decisions. To bridge this gap, we present TAO, a tool-aware joint scheduling framework for LLM-based agentic serving. Its value interface combines near-term tool readiness, node-specific cache credit with time-aware decay, and token footprint; a dynamic program jointly selects and places waiting sessions under capacity constraints. Across the 12 reported model-workload-concurrency settings, TAO reduces latency by up to 26.8%, reduces mean time to first token (TTFT) by up to 36.3%, and increases decode throughput by up to 29.5% relative to the best evaluated state-of-the-art baseline for each metric.

Is Your LLM Relay Serving What It Claims? A low-cost and high-power test for LLM Relay Auditing

Fangran Miao, Shengjie Niu, Jian Huang, Ting Li

Relay and reseller APIs have become a common way to access large language models (LLMs), yet users cannot directly verify whether they receive the models they request and pay for. This opacity motivates LLM relay auditing, but existing methods struggle to combine low cost, robustness to benign deployment changes, and statistically interpretable decisions under black-box access. To address these limitations, we propose distributional fingerprint auditing (DFA), a statistical method that requires only textual responses from suspect and trusted reference endpoints. DFA repeatedly queries semantically simple finite-choice probes and uses the resulting categorical response distributions to construct endpoint fingerprints. It compares the suspect and reference fingerprints probe by probe and aggregates the resulting evidence using the Cauchy combination test, yielding an approximate endpoint-level $p$-value for audit decisions at a prespecified nominal significance level. Using registered fingerprints of candidate models, a likelihood-based formulation further supports model attribution under full substitution and joint estimation of substitute identity and substitution ratio under constant-ratio mixed routing. Our benchmark includes 16 proprietary and open-weight LLMs from 10 model families. Across 240 ordered full-substitution pairs, DFA achieves high detection rates at a nominal significance level of $α=0.05$, using five probes and 250 relay requests per audit with stored reference fingerprints. Configuration overrides can lead to rejection even when the served model remains unchanged, with effects varying across models and configurations. Simulations based on stored empirical fingerprints demonstrate accurate model attribution and estimate substitution ratios, with estimation error decreasing as the audit budget increases.

GUI-JEPA: Candidate-Conditioned JEPA Latents as a Fast Action Policy for Mobile GUI Agents

Bingchao Wang, Yongcheng Jing, Shunyu Liu, Chengyu Wang, Jun Huang, Jie Yang, Wei Liu, Dacheng Tao

Mobile GUI agents are typically fine-tuned 7B-scale vision-language models (VLMs) that generate each action as text. However, these VLMs decode every action token by token, and even agents that score candidate actions keep a large language model or VLM in the loop, making them slow and memory-hungry. To address these issues, we propose GUI-JEPA, to our knowledge the first decoder-free GUI agent policy built on a Joint-Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA), which selects actions in the latent space of a JEPA encoder pretrained on unlabelled GUI screenshots. Its action- and region-conditioned latent predictor turns the screen latent into one latent per candidate action, letting lightweight heads score all candidates against the instruction in a single batched pass, without decoding a token. We further show that the scorer relies on this latent pathway and that the predictor is trained for the decision itself: a randomly initialised predictor does just as well as one pretrained on screen dynamics. On AndroidControl, GUI-JEPA is 2.8-4.0x faster on the same GPU than a Qwen2.5-VL-7B agent we fine-tune with the same inputs, while reaching 86-92% of its in-distribution accuracy with 6% of its parameters. Code is available at https://github.com/bcwang-sjtu/GUI-JEPA

S3KF: Spherical State-Space Kalman Filtering for Panoramic 3D Multi-Object Tracking

Zhongyuan Liu, Shaonan Yu, Jianping Li, Pengfei Wan, Xinhang Xu, Pengfei Wang, Maggie Y. Gao, Lihua Xie

Panoramic multi-object tracking is important for industrial safety monitoring, wide-area robotic perception, and infrastructure-light deployment in large workspaces. In these settings, the sensing system must provide full-surround coverage, metric geometric cues, and stable target association under wide field-of-view distortion and occlusion. Existing image-plane trackers are tightly coupled to the camera projection and become unreliable in panoramic imagery, while conventional Euclidean 3D formulations introduce redundant directional parameters and do not naturally unify angular, scale, and depth estimation. In this paper, we present $\mathbf{S^3KF}$, a panoramic 3D multi-object tracking framework built on a motorized rotating LiDAR and a quad-fisheye camera rig. The key idea is a geometry-consistent state representation on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, where object bearing is modeled by a two-degree-of-freedom tangent-plane parameterization and jointly estimated with box scale and depth dynamics. Based on this state, we derive an extended spherical Kalman filtering pipeline that fuses panoramic camera detections with LiDAR depth observations for multimodal tracking. We further establish a map-based ground-truth generation pipeline using wearable localization devices registered to a shared global LiDAR map, enabling quantitative evaluation without motion-capture infrastructure. Experiments on self-collected real-world sequences show decimeter-level planar tracking accuracy, improved identity continuity over a 2D panoramic baseline in dynamic scenes, and real-time onboard operation on a Jetson AGX Orin platform. These results indicate that the proposed framework is a practical solution for panoramic perception and industrial-scale multi-object tracking. The project page can be found at https://kafeiyin00.github.io/S3KF/.

Normalized Cuts and Data Clustering via Matrix Fractional Programming

Yannan Chen, Beichen Huang, Licheng Zhao, Chris Ding, Kaiming Shen

The normalized cut (NCut) problem is a fundamental one in the area of data clustering. Despite its fractional structure, the NCut problem is seldom considered from a fractional programming (FP) perspective in the existing literature. The main reason is that the conventional FP method is inadequate for this problem case: the classical Dinkelbach's transform can only handle a single ratio and hence is limited to the two-class clustering, whereas the multi-class clustering involves multiple ratio terms. This work proposes a novel so-called multidimensional quadratic transform that is capable of dealing with the multi-ratio case; it recasts the NCut problem into a bipartite matching problem---which can be immediately solved by linear search. Furthermore, we explore the connection between the proposed FP method and the minorization-maximization (MM) theory, and in turn characterize the convergence behavior of our algorithm. Finally, we conduct experiments to numerically demonstrate the advantages of the proposed FP-based algorithm in a variety of data clustering and image segmentation tasks.

Martingale-Based Resource Partitioning Bounds for URLLC and eMBB Network Slicing in 5G

Hanbing Li, Yantong Wang

Network slicing is a key enabler for the coexistence of ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) in 5G networks. However, allocating limited radio resources to heterogeneous slices while satisfying stringent quality-of-service (QoS) requirements remains challenging, particularly in the ultra-reliable regime where conventional effective-capacity-based approaches may lead to excessive resource allocation. To address this issue, this paper proposes a martingale-based resource block (RB) allocation framework for coexisting URLLC and eMBB slices. By constructing exponential martingale processes using the moment generating functions (MGFs) of the arrival and service processes and applying Doob's maximal inequality, explicit non-asymptotic upper bounds are derived for the URLLC delay violation probability and the eMBB backlog violation probability. Based on the resulting theoretical stability conditions, a low-complexity bisection algorithm is developed to determine the optimal martingale parameters, followed by a deterministic search algorithm to obtain the minimum RB requirements for both slices. Numerical results show that the analytical bounds effectively upper-bound the Monte Carlo simulation results. At a target violation probability of $10^{-6}$ for each slice, the proposed framework requires 44 RBs in total, satisfying the system capacity constraint of 50 RBs. Compared with the conventional effective-capacity baseline requiring 64 RBs, the proposed framework reduces total RB consumption by approximately 31.2% relative to the conventional effective-capacity baseline.

Do LLMs Rewrite History? Detecting Historical Revisionism in Large Language Models

Francesco Ortu, Joeun Yook, Punya Syon Pandey, Bernhard Schölkopf, Alberto Cazzaniga, Rada Mihalcea, Zhijing Jin

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to disseminate information, yet their handling of contested historical events and politically charged narratives remains understudied. We introduce HistoricalMisinfo, a dataset of 500 contested events from 45 countries and regions, each paired with a factual and a documented revisionist reference narrative, instantiated across 11 prompt scenarios reflecting common real-world usage. Using an LLM-as-a-judge protocol, we evaluate multiple model architectures under neutral prompts and robustness prompts that explicitly request revisionist content. Under neutral prompts, models generally align with factual references, though alignment varies by scenario and model. Robustness prompting reveals a consistent and sharp increase in revisionism scores across all models, indicating limited resistance to user-driven revisionist framing. HistoricalMisinfo offers a practical benchmark for evaluating robustness to historical revisionism in AI systems. Code and dataset: https://github.com/francescortu/PreservingHistoricalTruth

Callosal: Rethinking the Kernel Page Cache for Disaggregated Storage and Memory

James McMahon, Amit Samanta, Seung-seob Lee, Ryan Stutsman, Anurag Khandelwal

Classic distributed filesystems like NFS centralize filesystem operations on a server and use custom, filesystem-specific approaches for managing cache consistency across client nodes. This limits scalability, and it leads to weak consistency, ruling out applications that concurrently access and mutate shared files. Our key insight is that these legacy designs are now too storage-centric; with today's large memories, OS page caches do most of the "heavy lifting" in accessing data, not the filesystem and block storage layers. In response to this, we present Callosal, a page cache for a cluster of machines that is centered on shared disaggregated memory. Rather than serializing operations through a filesystem server and using ad hoc caching like NFS, Callosal is built around the existing Linux page cache paths and is accelerated by RDMA and programmable switches. Callosal delivers the strong consistency that programs expect with local filesystems (like in ext4 and tmpfs) while avoiding the additional network access delays and bottlenecks that host-based solutions incur. We compare Callosal against NFS, CephFS, and local filesystems; often Callosal can provide caching performance similar to local filesystems while also scaling across nodes. For mixed read/write workloads, on average Callosal has 4.6x higher throughput than NFS when contention is not extreme, and it offers strong consistency guarantees like CephFS, while outperforming it. For a file-backed key-value store with 1% writes and uniform access, Callosal scales 1.7x across 4 nodes, while CephFS collapses across nodes.

Building Mathematical Software -- Lessons from the Development of GAP

Alexander Hulpke

Mathematical software has particular needs that are not all covered by the existing literature on software engineering or algorithm design. This paper looks at some of these aspects, in the concrete context of the computer algebra system GAP. It also studies the potential impact AI systems could have on the development process for mathematical software.

Beyond Modeling Order: Dual-Path Spatiotemporal Representation Learning for Cross-Subject EEG Emotion Recognition

Zehui Xiao, Yi Zheng, Guixing Fu, Wenkai Lu, Lingfei He, Tao Tan, Yue Liu, Silun Wang 等 10 位作者

Cross-subject generalization remains a major challenge for EEG-based emotion recognition due to pronounced inter-subject variability in neural activity and emotion-related spatiotemporal patterns. Existing methods mainly alleviate inter subject differences through distribution alignment or contrastive learning, while paying limited attention to representation bias associated with fixed spatiotemporal modeling orders. We hypothesize that high-level emotion representations of the same EEG signal should remain consistent across different spatiotemporal modeling paths. Based on this hypothesis, we propose a Dual-Path Spatiotemporal Contrastive Learning (DP-STCL) framework for cross-subject EEG emotion recognition. DP-STCL employs two complementary encoders with independent parameters, namely a Temporal-to-Spatial (TS) path and a Spatial to-Temporal (ST) path, to model EEG spatiotemporal information under different integration orders. During representation learning, the same emotional stimulus is used to establish cross subject associations, while three complementary relations jointly constrain representation variations across subjects and modeling paths. This promotes stable and discriminative stimulus-related emotion representations. To further handle limited labeled target subject data, we introduce a LoRA-based few-shot adaptation strategy with low parameter overhead. Extensive cross-subject experiments on SEED, SEED-IV, SEED-V, and FACED show that DP-STCL consistently outperforms the compared methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving cross-subject EEG emotion recognition.

Trim: Fee Level Matters More Than Skew in Lightning Routing

Huiping Sun, Peilu Guo, Yiming Zhu, Yueqi Wu, Zhong Chen

Lightning routing nodes lend their channel balance for a posted fee. Operators' tools move that fee with the balance around a hand-set level, and which part of the fee drives revenue is unclear. We present Trim, which models a channel as a two-sided inventory with costly refills. Its optimal fee is a level, set by demand and replenishment, plus a balance skew, the shadow price of liquidity. The level is first order: no fee rule beats the ceiling demand and replenishment set, and on exactly solved channels the best flat fee comes within $1.6\%$ of the optimum at the median, whereas a level off by a factor of two loses tens of percent. The skew is second-order insurance: it adds at most what the flow-balancing flat fee loses to refused forwards. So the level should be chosen: Trim's rule traces the revenue--success frontier, posts one level on every channel, and adds a skew only where refills stay frequent and costly. On a 2026 snapshot with synthetic payments, no tuned tool beats that frontier by over a few percent, and a skew changes gross revenue by a few percent.

The Lay of the Land in Idiom-Translation Quality Estimation

Malik Marmonier, Benoît Sagot, Rachel Bawden

Idioms have long been a challenge for machine translation, and while large language models (LLMs) have proven increasingly adept at handling them, whether quality estimation (QE) systems have kept pace and can reliably score idiomatic renderings of these expressions above faulty literal ones remains unclear. We introduce the first parallel dataset pairing idiom-bearing English sentences with both literal and idiomatic translations across nine target languages, augmented into multi-sentence segments and a graded literality continuum. Using this dataset, we benchmark eleven conventional QE metrics from the COMET and MetricX families and ten LLMs from the Qwen-3, Gemma-4 and OLMo-3 families used as GEMBA-style judges. We find that most systems, especially older metrics and smaller models, display a marked literality bias, rating literal translations of idioms above idiomatic ones. Higher parameter counts and newer training sets appear to reduce this bias to an extent; nevertheless, of all the benchmarked systems, only MetricX-24-Hybrid (XL, XXL) and Gemma-4-31B consistently rate idiomatic translations of idioms above literal ones, and only Gemma-4-31B reliably ranks intermediate degrees of idiomaticity and literality. Our findings caution against deploying standard QE metrics in domains rich in figurative language, where higher scores might be rewarding undesirable literalism.

Sexual dimorphism and sex-specific features of pediatric hand bone shapes via statistical shape modeling

Edwin Tay, Amir A. Zadpoor, Nazli Tümer

Understanding the envelope of shape variation encompassing both sexual dimorphism and growth-related changes in living tissue is a non-trivial task. In this work, we use statistical shape models (SSMs) and analyze demographic-stratified shape parameters to quantify sexual dimorphism and sex-specific shape changes. To this end, we developed a two-stage detection-segmentation framework that accurately segmented $n = 27664$ unique bone masks from a radiographic dataset of $n = 1456$ subjects with diverse ages and sexes (HD95 = $1.512 \pm 0.005$, ASSD $0.449 \pm 001$, Dice = $0.987 \pm 0.00004$, IoU = $0.975 \pm 0.0001$). Following SSM fitting, our follow-up analyses of stratified shape parameters highlighted the morphology of sexual dimorphisms for each bone and demonstrated sex-specific differences in shape development. Our results were consistent with existing literature and provided an unambiguous, data-driven methodology for characterizing tissue shape and its population-scale variation. This approach provides a potential methodological foundation for developing population-based models of anatomical variation and could be extended to investigate tissue growth and shape changes over time. Future work should evaluate the applicability of this methodology on alternative anatomical structures and imaging modalities, with the goal of validating these growth trajectories on longitudinal data.

Precedence-Aware Resource Allocation: Extending the AUTOC Framework to Multi-Level Treatments

Olin E. Gilster, Shengpu Tang

Many real-world decision problems require allocating limited resources across individuals to maximize total benefit often through interventions that vary in intensity rather than binary treat-or-not decisions. In these settings, higher levels treatments require first applying lower levels of treatment, inducing a precedence constraint that complicates allocation under a fixed budget. While the causal inference literature has largely emphasized accurate estimation of conditional average treatment effects (CATE), recent work has shown that estimation accuracy alone does not guarantee effective resource allocation, motivating ranking-based evaluation frameworks. The Area Under the Targeting Operating Characteristic (AUTOC) provides an effective way to evaluate prioritization rules across budget levels, but existing formulations are limited to binary treatments. We introduce Multi-Level AUTOC (ML-AUTOC), which is a generalization for AUTOC designed for multi-level treatment settings with precedence. We also propose precedence-aware policies for mapping true marginal treatment effects to feasible treatment assignments under fixed budget constraints. Our results show that in the setting of multi-level treatments, maximizing realized treatment effects may require re-allocation of treatments across individuals.
