Self-Evolving Agentic Workflows via Semantic Decomposition of Complex Tasks

Zichuan Fu, Junjia Qi, Xian Wu, Wenlin Zhang, Yimin Deng, Kaifeng Guo, Xiangyu Zhao

Agentic workflows organize complex tasks into reusable procedures. However, invoking an LLM at every step incurs repeated inference costs and delays. We propose a framework for self-evolving agentic workflows through semantic task decomposition. Each subtask has explicit applicability conditions and a procedure that executes code or invokes a model as needed. An agent uses execution feedback to refine the decomposition and update these procedures. Experiments in the GLEE competition show the framework on bargaining, negotiation and persuasion. Most observed final-decision procedures are implemented in code. Code is available at https://github.com/Applied-Machine-Learning-Lab/NeurIPS2026_SeaFlow.

Search-Aware On-Policy Self-Distillation with Sibling Alignment for Generative Recommendation

Rongfeng Guo, Zhuang Zhuang, Ji Dai, Peng Zhao, Shijie Li, Jie Chen, Teng Long, Vincent Tao Hu 等 9 位作者

Generative recommendation retrieves items by autoregressively generating semantic IDs, typically via beam search. On-policy self-distillation (OPSD) enhances training supervision by transferring privileged self-teacher knowledge at student-generated states. However, beam-search retention depends on competition among prefixes: visited states differ in importance, and initially reliable decisions may approach the pruning boundary as training evolves. Moreover, conventional distribution matching couples target-token confidence with preferences among competing continuations, potentially weakening relational supervision when the self-teacher strongly favors the target. To address these challenges, we propose Search-Aware On-Policy Self-Distillation (SA-OPSD), a framework that transfers privileged self-teacher knowledge to the states visited during the student's own beam search. Specifically, we introduce Evolving-Boundary Sampling, which prioritizes search-critical states by considering both current pruning-boundary proximity and initial-reference retention-margin decline under a controlled distillation budget. Furthermore, we develop Confidence-Decoupled Branch Distillation, which separates target-probability calibration from informative sibling relations to better preserve the teacher's preferences among competing branches. Experiments on Industrial, Office, and Instruments demonstrate strong performance for SA-OPSD.

ViP-Rig: Visual-Prompted Controllable Rigging

Zihan Qin, Mingze Sun, Yifan Mao, Jialei Xu, Jingfeng Guo, Changrong Hu, Wenbo Zhao, Junjun Jiang 等 9 位作者

Rigging is inherently task-dependent because the same mesh may require different skeletons and deformation behaviors across animation tasks. In practice, artists often inspect an initial rig and repeatedly edit its skeletal structure and deformation behavior to meet specific animation requirements. Existing automatic methods primarily generate a plausible rig from geometry, offering limited explicit control over the resulting skeleton and deformation behavior. In this work, we present ViP-Rig, a visual-prompted framework that supports both prompt-first rigging and result-guided editing by injecting features extracted from user-drawn or edited 2D skeletal and rigidity prompts into frozen pretrained backbones. Specifically, ViP-Rig consists of two stages, Skeleton Generation and Skinning Prediction. In the first stage, the skeletal sketch is processed by the Dense-to-Compact Visual Prompt Encoding to produce compact, fixed-length conditioning tokens. The resulting tokens are injected into a frozen pretrained autoregressive generator through gated adapters to control joint placement and branching structure while preserving the generator's geometric prior. In the second stage, the rigidity map is processed using the same visual encoding design, while the pretrained skinning backbone remains frozen. The resulting tokens are symmetrically injected into the point and joint streams to modulate point-joint compatibility and the resulting skinning weights. Experiments on Articulation-XL2.0 and zero-shot evaluation on ModelsResource show that ViP-Rig more accurately recovers target skeletons and skinning weights than geometry-conditioned baselines under prompt-guided evaluation. Qualitative results further demonstrate explicit and localized control in both prompt-first rigging and result-guided editing.

RoFiGR: Coarse Routing, Fine Refinement via Level-Adaptive Distillation in Multimodal Generative Recommendation

Ji Dai, Zhipeng Wei, Zhuang Zhuang, Rongfeng Guo, Jie Chen, Quan Fang, Fei Pan

Generative recommenders predict an item's semantic identifier (SID) one code at a time. Early codes select broad branches, so a routing error can exclude relevant items before fine-grained prediction begins. In multimodal recommendation, these coarse decisions must reflect collaborative preferences as well as item semantics. We introduce RoFiGR, a two-tree recommender that uses collaborative information in both SID construction and generation. It aligns cumulative L1-L2 code vectors with frozen collaborative item embeddings and explicitly encodes item distance and source level in the serialized history. During generation, a sequential teacher supervises legal branches. Fixed coarse-level weights maintain routing supervision, while a bounded adaptive residual allocates additional weight according to teacher-student demand. On Instruments, Arts, and Games, RoFiGR improves all five ranking metrics over the evaluated external baselines. Five-seed paired tests with Holm correction support the main NDCG@10 improvements. Comparisons with alternative collaborative supervision objectives and tokenizers support the proposed design. Matched task and decoding analyses distinguish the effects of training exposure, stream fusion, and candidate budgets.

DeepInterestGR: Mining Deep Multi-Interest Using Multi-Modal LLMs for Generative Recommendation

Yangchen Zeng, Guangyuan Dong, Zhenyu Yu, Zhiyuan Hu, Jinze Wang, Rongfeng Guo

We introduce DeepInterestGR, a novel framework that integrates deep interest mining into the generative recommendation pipeline. This addresses the "Shallow Interest" problem: existing generative methods rely on surface-level textual features and fail to capture latent user motivations, limiting personalization depth and recommendation interpretability. Our approach leverages Multi-LLM Interest Mining (MLIM) via structured reasoning prompting, Reward-Labeled Deep Interest (RLDI) for quality control, and Interest-Enhanced Item Discretization (IEID) via RQ-VAE, combined with a two-stage SFT-GRPO training pipeline guided by an Interest-Aware Reward. We validate DeepInterestGR on three Amazon Review benchmarks (Beauty, Sports, Instruments), comparing against 14 state-of-the-art baselines including SASRec, BERT4Rec, TIGER, LC-Rec, and S-DPO. Our method achieves 12.4%-15.4% relative improvements on HR@10 and 15.5%-17.9% on NDCG@10, with cross-domain generalization gains of +24.8%. To our knowledge, this is the first work to demonstrate such significant gains by incorporating deep semantic interests into generative recommendation.

Proactive Memory for Event-Driven LLM Agents

Jinyang Li, Zichuan Fu, Xian Wu, Wenlin Zhang, Yimin Deng, Kaifeng Guo, Guojing Li, Junjia QI 等 9 位作者

Proactive LLM agents anticipate service opportunities from ongoing observations and accumulated history. Existing approaches emphasize recent context or retrieval of related memories, providing limited support for validating recurring behavioral regularities and assessing their applicability to the current event. We propose Proactive Memory (ProactMem), which organizes history into recent events, temporal trajectories, and behavioral regularities. Trajectory facts are checked against source events, and regularities are assessed through historical replay before being matched to current conditions. We also construct ProactiveStream, a longitudinal benchmark covering three application scopes, where agents process isolated event streams chronologically under episode-aware opportunity labels. On ProactiveStream, ProactMem achieves an overall effectiveness (F1) of 52.6%, a 21.4% relative improvement over the strongest of five external baselines. Code is available at: https://anonymous.4open.science/r/ProactMem-5351/.

Learning Force-Reactive Humanoid Loco-Manipulation

Sihang Li, Xiaofeng Guo, Jinkun Cao, Charlie Cheng, Ruihan Yang, Chen Feng, Guanya Shi, Haozhi Qi

Many everyday tasks require controlling contact force as well as motion. On a humanoid, this force must often be coordinated across both hands and the whole body, and cannot be specified by kinematic trajectories alone. Therefore, we present FLORE, a framework for learning force-reactive humanoid loco-manipulation. We collect robot-free demonstrations using two force-sensing UMI-style handheld grippers for hand motion and contact wrenches, and wearable trackers for body motion. A force-reactive diffusion policy takes vision, proprioception, and measured wrenches as input, then predicts actions and per-hand force commands. A hybrid compliance whole-body controller with force tracking executes these commands while maintaining balance: an integral of the force error measured by real force/torque (F/T) sensors lets each hand track force accurately along the commanded direction and remain compliant along the others. In simulation, the controller tracks per-hand force commands of varied magnitude and direction, with little loss in whole-body motion accuracy. Across three contact-rich tasks on the robot, the force-reactive policy succeeds in 80% of rollouts, compared with 26.7% for a position-only policy trained on the same demonstrations and executed by the same controller. Stop Hardening Everything: A Training-Free Neuron-Level Defense for Neural Ranking Models

Yu-An Liu, Ruqing Zhang Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hongru Song , Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yixing Fan, Xueqi Cheng Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy

While neural ranking models (NRMs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance in information retrieval, they remain highly vulnerable to imperceptible adversarial perturbations. Existing defenses are predominantly data-centric, exemplified by adversarial training, which requires constructing large collections of adversarial examples. By treating NRMs as black boxes and indiscriminately optimizing all model parameters, these methods incur substantial computational cost and often degrade performance on clean data due to overfitting. In this paper, we advocate that adversarial vulnerability is not uniformly distributed across model parameters, but instead originates from specific internal units. We propose a paradigm shift toward a model-centric defense that addresses vulnerability at its architectural source, without requiring costly retraining or adversarial data generation. Specifically, we introduce Search in the Model, a novel training-free framework that performs fine-grained identification and rectification of vulnerable neurons directly within the model. By formulating neuron identification as a ranking problem, we develop a maximum marginal vulnerability criterion to precisely locate the top-K neurons most responsible for model vulnerability, and apply targeted neuronal inverse perturbation to correct them. Extensive experiments on MS MARCO and TREC 19 show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in both defense efficiency and robustness to seen and unseen attacks, while preserving strong performance on clean data.

Detoxification for LLM: From Dataset Itself

Wei Shao Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yihang Wang ByteDance Inc. and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Gao yu Zhu, Ziqiang Cheng, Lei Yu, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xueqi Cheng Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy

Existing detoxification methods for large language models mainly focus on post-training stage or inference time, while few tackle the source of toxicity, namely, the dataset itself. Such training-based or controllable decoding approaches cannot completely suppress the model’s inherent toxicity, whereas detoxifying the pretraining dataset can fundamentally reduce the toxicity that the model learns during training. Hence, we attempt to detoxify directly on raw corpora with SoCD (Soft Contrastive Decoding), which guides an LLM to localize and rewrite toxic spans in raw data while preserving semantics, in our proposed HSPD (Hierarchical Semantic-Preserving Detoxification) pipeline, yielding a detoxified corpus that can drop-in replace the original for fine-tuning or other training. On GPT2-XL, HSPD attains state-of-the-art detoxification, reducing Toxicity Probability (TP) from 0.42 to 0.18 and Expected Maximum Toxicity (EMT) from 0.43 to 0.20. We further validate consistent best-in-class results on LLaMA2-7B, OPT-6.7B, and Falcon-7B. These findings show that semantics-preserving, corpus-level rewriting with HSPD effectively suppresses downstream toxicity while retaining data utility and allowing seamless source-level mitigation, thereby reducing the cost of later model behavior adjustment.

Gated Differentiable Working Memory for Long-Context Language Modeling

Lingrui Mei, Shenghua Liu Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yiwei Wang University of California, Merced, Yuyao Ge, Baolong Bi, Jiayu Yao, Jun Wan UBS Group AG, Ziling Yin 等 10 位作者

Long contexts break transformers: attention scores dilute across thousands of tokens, critical information gets lost in the middle, and the model cannot adapt to novel patterns at inference time. Recent work on test-time adaptation addresses this by maintaining a form of working memory—transient parameters updated on the current context—but existing approaches employ uniform write policies that waste computation on low-value regions and suffer from high gradient variance across semantically heterogeneous contexts. In this work, we reframe test-time adaptation as a budget-constrained memory consolidation problem, asking: given limited computational budget, which parts of the context should be consolidated into working memory? We propose GDWM (\textbf{G}ated \textbf{D}ifferentiable \textbf{W}orking \textbf{M}emory), a framework that introduces a Write Controller to gate the memory consolidation process. Our controller estimates Contextual Utility—an information-theoretic measure quantifying how much each region depends on long-range context—and allocates gradient steps accordingly, subject to a coverage constraint that ensures global representation. Theoretically, we prove that our chunk-restricted sampling strategy reduces gradient variance by eliminating inter-chunk variance via the Law of Total Variance. Experiments on ZeroSCROLLS and LongBench v2 benchmarks demonstrate that GDWM achieves comparable or superior performance with 4 ×fewer gradient steps compared to uniform baselines—excelling on sparse-information tasks (+6–13% on Qasper, +5–13% on GovReport for smaller models) while revealing principled trade-offs on dense-coverage tasks, establishing a new efficiency-performance Pareto frontier for test-time adaptation.

Compressing then Matching: An Efficient Pre-training Paradigm for Multimodal Embedding

Da Li, Yuxiao Luo, Keping Bi Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wei Yuan Kuaishou- 快手科技, Biao Yang, Yan Wang, Fan Yang Kuaishou- 快手科技 等 10 位作者

Multimodal Large Language Models advance multimodal representation learning by acquiring transferable semantic embeddings, thereby substantially enhancing performance across a range of vision-language tasks, including cross-modal retrieval, clustering, and classification. An effective embedding is expected to comprehensively preserve the semantic content of the input while simultaneously emphasizing features that are discriminative for downstream tasks. Recent approaches demonstrate that MLLMs can be adapted into competitive embedding models via large-scale contrastive learning, enabling the simultaneous optimization of two complementary objectives. We argue that the two aforementioned objectives can be decoupled: a comprehensive understanding of the input enables the embedding model to achieve superior performance on downstream tasks via contrastive learning. In this paper, we propose CoMa, a compressed pre-training phase, which serves as a warm-up stage for contrastive learning. Experiments demonstrate that with only a small amount of pre-training data, we can transform an MLLM into a competitive embedding model. CoMa achieves new state-of-the-art results among MLLMs of comparable size on the MMEB, realizing optimization in both efficiency and effectiveness. Our project is available at https://github.com/Trustworthy-Information-Access/CoMa.

DPEPO: Diverse Parallel Exploration Policy Optimization for LLM-based Agents

JunShuo Zhang, Chengrui Huang, Feng Guo, Zihan Li, Ke Shi, Menghua Jiang, Jiguo Yu, Shuo Shang 等 9 位作者

Large language model (LLM) agents that follow the sequential “reason-then-act” paradigm have achieved superior performance in many complex tasks. However, these methods suffer from limited exploration and incomplete environmental understanding, as they interact with only a single environment per step. In this paper, we first introduce a novel paradigm that enables an agent to interact with multiple environments simultaneously and share cross-trajectory experiences. Build upon this paradigm, we further propose Diverse Parallel Exploration Policy Optimization (DPEPO), a reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm that encourages the agent to perform diverse parallel exploration. There are two stages in DPEPO: initial supervised fine-tuning (SFT) imparts basic parallel reasoning and action generation, followed by reinforcement learning stage with a hierarchical reward scheme. We design a parallel trajectory-level success reward and two step-level rewards: Diverse Action Reward and Diverse State Transition Reward, which actively penalize behavioral redundancy and promote broad exploration. Extensive experiments on ALFWorld and ScienceWorld show that DPEPO achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) success rates, while maintaining comparable efficiency to strong sequential baselines.

Beyond the Crowd: LLM-Augmented Community Notes for Governing Health Misinformation

Jiaying Wu National University of Singapore, Zihang Fu National University of Singapore, Haonan Wang, Fanxiao Li, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Preslav Nakov Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Min-Yen Kan National University of Singapore

Community Notes, the crowd-sourced misinformation governance system on X (formerly Twitter), allows users to flag misleading posts, attach contextual notes, and rate the notes’ helpfulness. However, our empirical analysis of 30.8K health-related notes reveals substantial latency, with a median delay of 17.6 hours before notes receive a helpfulness status. To improve responsiveness during real-world misinformation surges, we propose CrowdNotes+, a unified LLM-based framework that augments Community Notes for faster and more reliable health misinformation governance. CrowdNotes+ integrates two modes: (1) evidence-grounded note augmentation and (2) utility-guided note automation, supported by a hierarchical three-stage evaluation of relevance, correctness, and helpfulness. We instantiate the framework with HealthNotes, a benchmark of 1.2K health notes annotated for helpfulness, and a fine-tuned helpfulness judge. Our analysis first uncovers a key loophole in current crowd-sourced governance: voters frequently conflate stylistic fluency with factual accuracy. Addressing this via our hierarchical evaluation, experiments across 15 representative LLMs demonstrate that CrowdNotes+ significantly outperforms human contributors in note correctness, helpfulness, and evidence utility.

Compete to Complete: Co-opetition Adversarial Learning for Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Xin Liu , Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yu-An Liu, Ruqing Zhang Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yixing Fan, Lixin Su Baidu, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xueqi Cheng Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has emerged as a promising paradigm for mitigating hallucinations in large language models (LLMs).However, the intrinsic heterogeneity between the retriever and the generator often leads to a mismatch between retrieved evidence and generation needs, hindering effective coordination. We argue that competition between discriminative retrieval and generative modeling can more effectively expose their mutual weaknesses and induce deeper interaction. Motivated by this insight, we propose CARL (Co-opetition AdveRsarial Learning), a framework that formulates retriever–generator training in RAG as a minimax game. In this game, the retriever is optimized to retrieve both useful and adversarially useless documents to challenge the generator, while the generator learns to identify useful evidence and remain robust to misleading retrievals to produce accurate answers.Experiments on seven benchmark datasets demonstrate that CARL consistently improves RAG performance, validating the effectiveness of adversarial co-opetition in enhancing retriever–generator synergy.

Modeling Human-Like Cognition for Stance Detection: Integrating Intuitive Judgment and Analytical Reasoning

Zhaodan Zhang, Jin Zhang, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xueqi Cheng Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy

Stance detection aims to identify the attitude expressed in text towards a given target, with applications in public opinion analysis and misinformation mitigation. Despite recent advances in large language models (LLMs), two key challenges remain: (1) spurious correlations between superficial features and stance labels, and (2) lack of cognitive modeling that simulates the transition from intuitive perception to deliberate reasoning. To address these issues, we propose Cognitive-Driven Stance Detection (CDSD), inspired by Kahneman’s Dual-Process Theory. CDSD integrates fast intuitive judgment (System 1) and analytical reasoning (System 2), enhanced by three key modules: attention-based cognitive alignment to compare system focus, uncertainty-aware belief update using Bayesian inference, and self-doubt-triggered counterfactual reasoning for re-evaluation under low consistency or high uncertainty. Experimental results on SEM16, P-Stance, and VAST show that CDSD outperforms state-of-the-art methods across multiple LLMs. Notably, CDSD exhibits strong robustness against textual perturbations such as emotional word removal and rhetorical restructuring. By integrating cognitive theory with NLP, our work provides a promising path toward more reliable and interpretable stance detection systems.

Distilling Large Embeddings via Hyperspherical Householder Quantization

Yihang Wang ByteDance Inc. and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Bin Wu, Yueyang Su Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tianfu Zhang ByteDance Inc., Yiqi Du ByteDance Inc., Lei Yu, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xueqi Cheng Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy

Large embedding models have become the backbone of modern retrieval systems, offering strong semantic representations at the cost of substantial storage and computation. While recent work explores quantizing embeddings into discrete document identifiers for generative retrieval, most existing approaches rely on Euclidean quantization, which is poorly aligned with the angular geometry induced by contrastive embedding training and often requires long identifier sequences to preserve semantic fidelity. In this work, we propose Hyperspherical Householder Quantization (HHQ), a geometry-aware distillation method that compresses large embeddings into short discrete representations via iterative Householder transformations on the unit hypersphere. By explicitly preserving cosine similarity at each step, HHQ distills semantic structure into compact identifiers that remain faithful to the original embedding space. To support reliable generation of these identifiers, we introduce constrained supervised fine-tuning and tree-aware dynamic masking to enforce structural validity during training and inference. Experiments on NQ and MS MARCO show that HHQ achieves competitive or superior retrieval performance using only five tokens per document, substantially reducing decoding cost while retaining strong semantic retrieval accuracy.
