Broken on Arrival: Non-Functional Quantized LLM Artifacts in Public Model Registries and How to Catch Them

Aditi Patodiya

原文摘要

Developers download quantized large language models (LLMs) from public registries to run them locally. None of the registries we examined documented functional testing of their files. We tested all 305 eligible code-capable GGUF tags (the llama.cpp format) across 15 model lines in the official Ollama library, plus 22 popular Hugging Face community files. A 15-task code screen identified suspects, which we retested on all 164 HumanEval+ tasks. Seven official tags (2.3%) solved at most six of them. All were low-bit quantizations of models with at most four billion parameters. We rebuilt five suspect files from the original weights. All five registry files matched our uncalibrated rebuilds tensor for tensor, so none was corrupted. Exact reproducibility did not imply function. With the weights, toolchain and tensor mix held fixed, adding an importance matrix raised Qwen2.5-Coder-3B scores at three quantization levels from zero to 76-113 of 164 tasks. The same uncalibrated recipe left the smaller Qwen2.5-Coder-1.5B functional, showing that the recipe alone does not predict failure. None of 66 sampled tags that passed the screen was non-functional. We release the audit data and the quantcheck tool and recommend screening low-bit tags before publication, then calibrating or withholding failures.

AskStream: When and What to Ask Proactively under Uncertainty in Streaming Video Understanding

原文摘要

Recent advances in multimodal large language models have increased interest in interaction paradigms for video understanding. The evolution from offline to streaming and proactive interaction has gradually shifted models from passive responders toward more proactive agents that can decide when to answer. However, existing proactive paradigms typically assume that the information required to answer a query is complete, leaving models to only wait or answer. In the real world, however, information is often incomplete due to uncertainty from either the video or the user. In proactive paradigms, such uncertainty can cause the model to wait forever or generate highly hallucinatory responses. We therefore argue that proactive interaction should be redefined with a third action: ask, allowing models to actively ask for missing information. To study when and what models should ask before answering, we introduce AskStream, the first multi-turn benchmark spanning video and user uncertainty for streaming video understanding, with four task categories and eight subtasks. It contains 438 videos with 2,714 manually annotated frame-level time windows across three types: wait, ask, and answer. Across both multiple-choice and open-ended settings, even the strongest model attains only 52.18% on our proposed Ask-F1 metric, highlighting substantial limitations in proactive information seeking under uncertainty.

Can LLMs Uncover Hidden Physical Laws through Free Exploration?

Zhen Yang, Wen Wang, Xander Xu, Ying-Cong Chen

原文摘要

Scientific discovery often begins with an unexpected observation that prompts a new research question. In a world with altered physical laws, can large language models (LLMs) notice unexpected behavior, such as heavier objects falling more slowly, and discover the law through experiments without being told what to investigate? To evaluate this ability, we introduce LongChang, an automated framework that creates simulated worlds with altered physics, where one or more laws differ from ordinary physics. The evaluated LLMs act as explorers, manipulating objects and building tools to investigate their own questions without research tasks or hints about these laws. Separate LLM agents generate and review scenes, review tool designs, and evaluate reports for correctness and experimental support using the altered physical laws and exploration records. These records guide scene evolution for further exploration, allowing the full cycle to run without human intervention. Among 12 LLMs, GPT-6-Astra achieves a discovery rate of 16.7%, while the other 11 score 0%. The exploration records reveal uninvestigated anomalies and only partial identification of the altered physical laws.

CodeCap-Bench: Can Code Serve as a Good Video Caption?

Jiafu Tang, Yifan Xu, Eric Tang, Junjie Zhao, Shipeng Luo, Te Sun, Haoxuan Hu, Yiyan Ji 等 14 位作者

原文摘要

Video captioning aims to preserve visual information through compact descriptions, predominantly using natural language. However, precisely expressing fine-grained spatial structures and temporal dynamics in natural language often leads to lengthy and potentially ambiguous descriptions. In this work, we explore Code as Video Caption, a paradigm where executable programs serve as a complementary representation of visual content through graphical primitives, layout rules, and functions of time. To examine whether code captions effectively preserve video information, we compare them with natural language captions on downstream question answering and video reconstruction tasks. Our results show that code captions achieve superior reasoning accuracy and reconstruction fidelity. Despite these advantages, realizing the potential of code captioning depends on whether current multimodal large language models (MLLMs) can generate faithful code captions. To systematically assess this capability, we introduce CodeCap-Bench, which comprises 323 videos spanning five categories of structured 2D content, along with fine-grained annotations and a multi-level evaluation framework. Extensive experiments reveal that while leading proprietary MLLMs demonstrate promising code captioning capabilities, they still struggle to faithfully capture complex temporal dynamics, with open-source models lagging substantially behind.

Nemotron-Labs-Diffusion-Uni: Elastic Self-Refining Unified Diffusion LLM with Cross-Paradigm On-Policy Distillation

原文摘要

We propose Nemotron-Labs-Diffusion-Uni (NLD-Uni), a unified discrete diffusion large language model (DLLM) for visual understanding and generation tasks. Compared with prior unified diffusion models, NLD-Uni introduces two major innovations. First, we propose a unified cross-paradigm on-policy distillation (OPD) framework that successfully transfers the visual understanding ability of autoregressive VLMs and visual generation ability of continuous flow models, to a unified DLLM. Second, NLD-Uni incorporates a novel progressive self-refining diffusion process that gradually corrupts each token across multiple steps during training, as opposed to adopting the conventional masked diffusion formulation that directly corrupts a clean image token to an uninformative mask token. At inference, this design allows NLD-Uni to make intermediate commit to a token, enabling progressive self-refinement for better visual quality. Through extensive experiments, we show that NLD-Uni achieves state-of-the-art performance among unified DLLMs on diverse tasks including visual question-answering, multi-modal reasoning, object grounding, text-to-image generation, and image editing.

Omni-InteractScope: Benchmarking Proactive and Agentic Interaction in Continuous Omnimodal Streams

原文摘要

Omnimodal large language models (Omni-LLMs) are increasingly expected to assist users while observing continuous audiovisual streams. However, existing evaluations provide limited insight into how reliably these models connect stream evidence and user needs to timely, sustained interventions. We introduce \textbf{Omni-InteractScope}, a benchmark of 1,479 human-annotated, cross-reviewed interactions with 1,790 temporal targets across eight task groups. It links input modalities, event triggers, intervention types, and user needs, covering event-timed tool invocation and query-free assistance alongside notifications, warnings, state tracking, and continuous responses. Our experimental results on the proposed benchmark reveal three critical limitations of current Omni-LLMs: (1) \textbf{Timely tool invocation remains unreliable}: all 12 evaluated models produce an on-time first response for at most 40\% of tool-invocation targets, and joint timing-and-tool accuracy reaches at most 32.0\%. (2) \textbf{Query-free reminders remain poorly covered}: all evaluated models achieve lower timely reference-target recall on query-free reminders than on explicit questions, measured on their respective target sets. Reminder recall never exceeds 23.0\%. (3) \textbf{End-to-end guidance coverage remains limited}: nine models cover none of the 26 guidance sequences in full, and the remaining three cover only one to three sequences each. Targeted controls further show that tool-invocation scores alone do not establish event grounding and that reminder coverage depends on response history and frequency. These findings motivate developing and evaluating streaming assistants for timely action, initiative under general user needs, and coverage of entire response sequences.

MoveBench: A Rubric-Based Benchmark for Evaluating Large Language Models in Sports and Health Coaching

Yitong Li, Jiang Bian, Jingling Wang, Pan Ding, Chengying Gu

原文摘要

Despite rapid advances in large language models (LLMs), their deployment in the sports and health domain remains high-risk due to the absence of domain-specific evaluation benchmarks. Existing general-purpose benchmarks (e.g., MMLU and HELM) primarily assess broad knowledge and reasoning capabilities, but fail to capture critical domain requirements such as exercise safety, physiological appropriateness, personalization, and actionable coaching quality. This gap is particularly concerning in fitness and health applications, where incorrect or unsafe recommendations can lead to physical harm. To address this limitation, we introduce MoveBench, the first comprehensive benchmarking framework specifically designed for evaluating LLMs in sports and health coaching. The proposed benchmark integrates heterogeneous task formats, including multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and open-ended question answering (OpenQA), grounded in real-world user scenarios and paired with structured rubrics emphasizing safety compliance, scientific validity, and training logic. Through large-scale evaluation of 15 diverse LLMs on 809 questions with 5,012 rubric-level criteria, our results reveal substantial performance variability, particularly in safety awareness, structured program design, and personalization capability, highlighting a critical gap between knowing and doing. Our work establishes a foundational evaluation standard for sports and health LLM applications and provides a reproducible framework for advancing safe, reliable, and context-aware AI-driven coaching systems. After One-Click Video: The Inflow of Service-Type Content, the Failure of the Recommendation Pool Mechanism, and the BoLe System

Bo Zou, Chao Xu

原文摘要

In September 2026, a new large language model was released. Soon after, a new way of making explainer videos became very popular: people asked the model to write a program, and the program produced the video. "One-click video" content then appeared in large amounts on many platforms. On the surface, this is a rise in creative power at the level of the individual. We argue that, at a deeper level, it changes the structure of the content industry. This judgment rests on two observations. First, this wave of content is service-type content. People watch it to meet a need, not to enjoy the content itself. The other kind is work-type content. AI makes both kinds faster to produce. But anyone can come in and make service-type content, while work-type content is limited by the number of people who have something to say. So the ratio between the two slowly becomes unbalanced. Second, free platforms choose content through layers of trial viewing, and this uses up user attention. The total amount of attention is fixed. The unbalanced ratio also dilutes good content. A simplified mathematical model shows that, as long as these conditions hold, the recommendation pool mechanism will fail once new content grows past a certain multiple. Based on this, we discuss one possible way out. Machines and entry rules judge whether service-type content passes the bar. Trusted people judge work-type content. We call this the BoLe system. At the end, we briefly imagine how the two kinds of content may develop from here.

A Broader Look into MLLM's Retrieval Heads

Jia Wang, Yuqing Li, Jiangnan Li, Zheng Lin, Mo Yu

原文摘要

Locating relevant evidence in long inputs is a core capability of Multimodal Large Language Models. Prior studies attribute this capability to retrieval heads, a sparse set of attention heads that transfer information from the context to the output. However, these analyses are confined to a limited set of modalities and the corresponding models. Moreover, how retrieval heads can be leveraged to enhance the model calls for further exploration. In this paper, we ask whether this mechanism expands together with the input modalities of the model. Taking audio-visual input as a newly added modality, we construct paired inputs in which the same answer is either spoken or shown on screen. With the evidence content fixed, retrieval heads remain sparse in the new modality and are shared to a large extent across modalities. Across 18 language, vision-language, and omni-modal checkpoints, omni-modal models largely preserve the retrieval heads of their backbones. Ablating these heads eliminates nearly all audio-visual retrieval. The heads shared across modalities make up fewer than 2\% of all heads, yet ablating them also degrades document understanding, spatial perception, and visual mathematics. Building on these findings, we turn retrieval heads into a target of optimization by training their attention with a ranking objective. This raises the page Recall@1 of Qwen3-VL-8B on MMDocIR by 6.03 points and improves document retrieval across three model families. Functional attention heads can thus serve both as a lens on multimodal models and as a target for improving them.

Can Test-Time Memory Evolution Outperform Test-Time Training for Scientific Discovery?

Yepeng Liu, Shengmai Chen, Xuandong Zhao, Chengzhi Liu, Dawn Song, Xin Eric Wang, Yuheng Bu

原文摘要

Recent \emph{test-time training} (TTT) frameworks have enabled open-weight large language models (LLMs) to outperform inference-only frameworks powered by frontier models on scientific discovery tasks. However, TTT introduces additional computational cost for online weight updates during the discovery process, making computational efficiency an important consideration when scaling to larger models. This motivates us to explore an efficient \emph{test-time adaptation} method for scientific discovery. We introduce \emph{Test-Time Memory Evolution} (TTME), a plug-and-play test-time adaptation method, as an alternative to TTT. TTME continually updates the external memory by distilling the experience to guide subsequent discovery without updating model weights. To have a clean comparison, we evaluate TTME and TTT under the same discovery framework, replacing only the test-time adaptation method. Our evaluation shows that TTME outperforms TTT on all five mathematical tasks, while reducing computational cost by $82.8$-$84.6\%$ in FLOPs and $47.7$-$58.4\%$ in runtime. These results establish TTME as an effective and computationally efficient alternative to TTT in the evaluated discovery settings.

原文摘要

Large language model agents have enabled software development through natural-language interaction, but extending this paradigm to end-to-end game development remains challenging. Building a playable game requires coordinating code, scenes, assets, animations, physics, and configurations, while allowing developers to validate their integrated behavior through interactive testing. We introduce VibeGame, a framework for creating complete 2D game projects from natural-language prompts and optional reference images. Its AI-native game engine represents project state as schema-validated structured text and provides frame-synchronous runtime control, enabling agents to inspect game states, execute actions, and verify behavior at their own pace. Built upon this interface, we design an Adversarial Agent Team of eight specialized agents to separate implementation from review, so that problems are found and fixed through multi-round loops. For each conducted and accepted project, we further introduce a training-free self-evolution mechanism to distill it into reusable skeletons, modules, and collaboration contracts for future development. We evaluate prompt-assets-to-game (PA2G), where agents are given an asset library, and prompt-to-game (P2G), where agents generate their own art. On a GameCraft-Bench subset, VibeGame in P2G consistently outperforms a range of agent harnesses in either P2G or PA2G with the same underlying model, including GPT-6.1-Sol.

CellTrack-Bench: Microscopic Cell Tracking Benchmark for Vision-Language Models

Ilan Theodoro, Jordão Bragantini, Loïc A. Royer

原文摘要

Large language models have shown outstanding performance on text-first tasks such as coding, math, and writing. Recent efforts are shifting models' training to include scientific problems that often live in highly specialized domains beyond text, such as protein structure and biological images. However, in these scenarios, their general-purpose accuracy compared with specialized algorithms remains in question. One such domain is cell tracking, which requires spatiotemporal awareness of cell dynamics. To evaluate this, we created a new benchmark, CellTrack-Bench, which assesses Vision-Language Models' (VLMs) cell-tracking-related performance against specialized trackers. The full benchmark draws from 15 standard cell-tracking datasets across four imaging modalities and comprises 1,537 problems corresponding to 9,041 cell-linking decisions. We selected a hard subset requiring greater reasoning effort by identifying failures shared across distinct algorithmic trackers. With this proposed dataset, we: (i) evaluated different environment harnesses for VLMs; (ii) benchmarked 9 frontier closed-source models and 13 open-weight models; and (iii) provided a detailed analysis of their failure modes. Code, the stored model outputs, and a pipeline that regenerates the benchmark from the source datasets are available at https://github.com/royerlab/celltrack-bench.

Self-Assessment Reinforcement Learning for Search-State Awareness in Retrieval-Augmented Large Language Models

原文摘要

Recent advances in search agents have enabled large language models to tackle complex tasks by retrieving and synthesizing external information. However, existing search agents often lack search-state awareness, i.e., the ability to recognize what information has been obtained and what remains missing, leading to hallucinated reasoning and prematurely terminated search. To address this limitation, we propose Self-Assessment Reinforcement Learning (SARL), a reinforcement learning framework in which models learn to recognize their own search state during training and improve their search behavior accordingly, without requiring additional assessment at test time. SARL achieves this through a dual reward design that captures the corrective effect of each assessment while penalizing excessive reliance on it, jointly encouraging effective and efficient search trajectories. Under this setup, SARL achieves a 24.3% relative improvement over the strongest baseline, with average gains of 35.9% on multi-hop reasoning and 27.9% on deep research benchmarks against the strongest per-benchmark baselines. SARL further surpasses methods built on auxiliary supervision or multi-agent coordination, despite operating as a standalone RL framework with no inference-time scaffolding. Beyond final performance, SARL maintains training stability under extended search horizons, a regime where existing methods consistently degrade, enabling sustained gains as task complexity grows.

LongZero: Enhancing Long-Context Reasoning in LLMs from Zero Data

Zhennan Wan, Jianfei Chen

原文摘要

Reinforcement learning (RL) is an effective way to strengthen the long-context reasoning of large language models (LLMs), but it needs training data that are long, diverse, challenging, and verifiable. Human annotation of such data is expensive, naturally occurring data are too scarce to sustain RL, and existing synthesis methods depend on external corpora or stronger teacher models, which become harder to obtain as the trained models get stronger. Recently, RL from zero data, in which a model learns from tasks it proposes itself, has achieved excellent performance, but existing methods target short-context tasks. Therefore, we propose $\textbf{LongZero}$, a method that lets an LLM improve its own long-context reasoning without any external data. Instead of writing questions and answers over existing documents, LongZero first has the model synthesize the question and answer with its supporting evidence in a compact structured form, and only then separately expands the evidence into a long multi-document context. LongZero combines these self-written multi-hop reasoning tasks with self-written multi-round retrieval tasks and trains the model with GRPO. We evaluate LongZero on two LLMs across five long-context reasoning benchmarks and compare it with RL on data synthesized from external corpora. Experimental results show that LongZero can generalize to real tasks, and outperforms both baselines, suggesting a viable and promising path to improving long-context reasoning of LLMs.

CausGround: Causal Interaction Grounding for Adaptive Embodied Planning

Yijun Shen, Diqi He, Jinbang Guo, Wanyue Zhang, Jiaming Mi, Huan Yang, Zhongyuan Wang, Zhiwei Yu 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) show promising reasoning capabilities, but reliable physical interaction requires planning that accounts for when actions are executable and how they change the world. These preconditions and effects are environment-dependent and often not captured by MLLMs, making adaptation challenging. Yet existing approaches either require costly environment-specific training or rely on unstructured interaction experience that is difficult to reuse. Therefore, we introduce CausGround, a non-parametric causal interaction grounding framework that distills interaction experience into reusable action-centered causal knowledge. CausGround identifies action preconditions and effects and organizes them in a factorized world-state representation capturing object attributes and inter-object relations. At planning time, task-relevant causal dependencies are grounded in current observations to support backward reasoning over preconditions and forward reasoning over effects for action selection and multi-step planning. We evaluate CausGround on simulated high-level planning, interaction reasoning, and real-world robot manipulation. On adapted VirtualHome and RoboCasa benchmarks, CausGround improves vision-based high-level planning across MLLM backbones, increasing average task success from 24.9% to 53.3% on VirtualHome and closed-loop planning success from 43.0% to 57.0% on RoboCasa. On SWITCH, average interaction reasoning accuracy increases from 25.8% to 31.9%, indicating improved action selection, recovery, and verification. Moreover, real-world experiments show that CausGround reasons backward from MLLM-interpreted goals to derive executable high-level action sequences for sequential manipulation. These results demonstrate that reusable action preconditions and effects support long-horizon embodied planning across diverse environments without parameter updates.

HABIT-Bench: Evaluating Habit Induction from Longitudinal Weak Evidence in Agent Memory

Junming Zhang, Rubin Wei, Xu Cheng, Hao Sun, Jiarui Wang, Ruoxi Cheng, Xiquan Wang, Peisong Wu 等 10 位作者

原文摘要

In long-term interactions with large language model (LLM) agents, users reveal habits through their choices and actions. These habits capture implicit user information that agents must infer across conversations. However, individual observations may provide only partial evidence about a habit or when it applies. Retaining past interactions alone does not ensure that agents can infer habits and apply them appropriately. We introduce HABIT-Bench to evaluate how well agent memory systems infer habits from weak evidence and apply them to later requests. We construct synthetic user histories from task-oriented dialogue data and controlled habit graphs. The histories span hundreds of sessions across food, finance, software, and travel. Four-choice tasks assess agents' ability to infer user habits and apply them appropriately. They include temporary exceptions, changes in habits, and suggestions that users have not accepted. Sampled tasks undergo independent human review. We evaluate eight memory methods with Qwen3-235B-A22B and GLM-5.3-Flash. The best-performing memory method achieves 33.61\% macro accuracy across the four domains. Performance remains limited even when annotated evidence is supplied directly. These results expose a persistent gap between access to past interactions and the ability to infer and appropriately use user habits.

AlphaBet: Reinforcement Learning for LLM Event Forecasting Agents

Liqin Ye, Rongzhi Zhang, Xin Liu, Zheng Li, Yuan He, Qingyu Yin, Priyanka Nigam, Chao Zhang

原文摘要

Forecasting an unresolved event requires finding relevant evidence and deciding how strongly it supports each outcome. Yet outcome-based training of Large Language Model (LLM) forecasters often begins with preassembled evidence at a single prediction date, leaving evidence acquisition outside the learning loop. We introduce AlphaBet, an agentic reinforcement learning (RL) framework that trains a single LLM policy to search, reason, and report probabilities across multiple pre-resolution dates. Each dated forecast is scored by a proper scoring rule against the eventual outcome, allowing one resolved event to supervise decisions under different information states. We decompose forecasting regret into an evidence-acquisition gap and a probability-reporting gap, and show that Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO)'s standard-deviation normalization can distort the reporting target under multi-class proper scores. On GLM-4.5-Air, AlphaBet reduces the Brier score from 0.731 to 0.626 on Forecast-Dojo and from 0.612 to 0.528 on FutureX. Controlled ablations attribute these gains to multi-date training and show that they come from improvements in both information acquisition and probability reporting. Our empirical results validate that GRPO's std normalization degrades proper-scoring-rule performance while leaving top-outcome accuracy largely unchanged.

Amortizing Sequential Experimental Design in Reasoning LLMs

Anita Kriz, Antonin Berthon, Nicolás Astorga, Mihaela van der Schaar

原文摘要

Despite their extensive pretraining knowledge and strong reasoning capabilities, large language models (LLMs) struggle to adaptively gather information in experimental design tasks. We study how to amortize sequential Bayesian experimental design (BED) into an LLM by explicitly training the reasoning that guides action selection using information-gain rewards. Our approach specifies the experimental generative model independently of the LLM's own beliefs, allowing us to optimize expected information gain under a model of our choosing. We investigate the design choices for amortization, including alternative generative-model constructions, reward estimation, hypothesis-space specification, multi-step objectives, and computational costs relative to training- and inference-time BED baselines. On Twenty Questions, the resulting policies improve information acquisition and task performance, outperform inference- and training-time BED baselines at substantially lower computational cost, and generalize to unseen categories. We further demonstrate positive transfer from Twenty Questions training to Medi-Q, a real-world clinical dialogue benchmark. These results suggest that information gathering can be learned as a generalizable reasoning skill in LLMs.
