At the edge of stability, the iterates of gradient descent oscillate along the sharp directions of the Hessian. This poses a significant challenge for continuous-time models as the usual continuous-time approximation -- the gradient flow -- admits no oscillations. Several continuous-time models have been proposed to capture the behavior at the edge of stability, among them central flow and rod flow. Although both models can be interpreted as performing a coarse-graining in time, the connection between them remains poorly understood. Here we show that both flows can be derived from a third object, the edge coupling: a functional on consecutive iterates whose critical points are the fixed points and period-two orbits of gradient descent. It is revealed that the two flows correspond to coarse-grainings at different time scales. Rod flow coarse-grains over only the fastest time scale, while central flow coarse-grains over both the fast and intermediate time scales. Furthermore, using the edge coupling, we derive rod flows and central flows for momentum methods such as heavy ball and Adam. We verify the derived flows experimentally on representative neural network architectures, where they track the discrete iterates throughout all phases of training -- including the transition from the stable regime to the edge of stability.

A Cyber Range Evaluation of Inductive Autonomous Network Incident Response Agents

原文摘要

We have applied a novel combination of classic relational database modeling and modern reinforcement learning to automated intrusion response to enable inductive decision agents. Unlike previous work in the area, our approach allows agents to handle variable quantities of network assets without retraining. We test the operational performance of our approach in a virtualized computer network with variable topologies, red-team automation and simulated user agents. The task of the agents is to prevent hosts in the network from being accessed by the red-team agent, while minimizing the availability costs induced from defensive measures. We test a combination of heuristic agents and policies trained using relational reinforcement learning. The reinforcement learning agents were overall more efficient at defending the system than the heuristic policy, and the closest to the performance of human operators at the task.

Optimal Competitive Ratios for Chasing Convex Functions with Quadratic Growth

Linzhe He, Sifan Yang, Wei Jiang, Lijun Zhang

原文摘要

Chasing convex function has attracted much attention in recent years, which can be formulated as a game between a learner and an adversary. In each round, the adversary reveals a convex function, and the learner selects a decision and incurs a hitting cost and a movement cost for changing its decision. The performance of the learner is measured by the \emph{competitive ratio}, which compares its cumulative cost with that of an optimal offline decision sequence. For Euclidean movement, existing upper and lower bounds for $κ$-well-conditioned functions exhibit a polynomial gap. For squared Euclidean movement, dimension-free competitive guarantees have been established under quadratic growth, but the optimal competitive ratio remains unclear. In this paper, we establish optimal dimension-free competitive ratios for convex function chasing under two types of movement costs. For Euclidean movement, we propose Clipped Proximal Descent (CPD), which combines a balanced proximal step with a clipped correction toward the current minimizer. CPD achieves an $O(κ^{1/3})$ competitive ratio for smooth convex functions satisfying quadratic growth, improving the previous $O(\sqrtκ)$ upper bound and matching the existing $Ω(κ^{1/3})$ lower bound. For squared Euclidean movement, we establish the exact optimal dimension-free competitive ratio for convex functions satisfying quadratic growth. Our result is based on a new tight competitive analysis of Regularized Online Balanced Descent (R-OBD) and a matching lower bound against randomized algorithms.

Technohybridism: Recursive Semantic Normalization in AI-Mediated Societies

Charalampos M. Liapis, Epameinondas Panagopoulos

原文摘要

Language-generating AI systems are no longer only objects of linguistic interaction: their outputs increasingly re-enter the communicative and institutional practices from which their training material was drawn. Drawing on social theory, social epistemology, and the philosophy of language, this article develops a sociotechnical account of that re-entry. We introduce recursive semantic normalization: the process through which machine-generated formulations, once recurrently taken up, evaluated, reused, and institutionally retained, participate in the reproduction and transformation of semantic regularities. Under the heading of technohybridism, we argue that the relevant unit of analysis is the hybrid semantic system, a recursively coupled configuration of human practices, computational generation, and institutional uptake. First, we distinguish the concept from neighbouring accounts, including model collapse, looping effects, machine habitus, machine culture, and the epistemology of AI testimony. Second, we develop an analytical model that separates generation, selection, uptake, and persistence and distinguishes machine-attributable change from change that would have occurred anyway. Third, we analyse uptake as routinized, institutionally diffused, and socially stratified practice and state conditions under which machine-derived regularities become norms. Fourth, we identify social-epistemic consequences: the laundering of provenance that weakens epistemic vigilance, the erosion of the cognitive diversity on which collective inquiry depends, and the narrowing of shared hermeneutical resources. An evidential ladder for empirical research follows. The account attributes no normative authority to machine outputs; what changes is the field within which human and institutional uptake operates.

When Bigger Becomes Brittle: Why Compression Hurts More as Language Models Scale

原文摘要

Quantization and pruning reduce the cost of deploying language models, but their effects are usually reported as benchmark scores. Such scores record only the loss that remains at the output. Inside the model, compression damages some components more than others, and the rest of the network can partly compensate. The observed loss therefore reflects both the damage and this compensation, which benchmark scores cannot separate. How the two combine, and whether their balance changes with model size, remains unclear. We study this compensation for in-context retrieval, a capability carried by a small, identifiable set of attention heads. To separate the two, the expected loss from ablating these heads is decomposed exactly into the part restored by the rest of the network, attributed to the components responsible, and the part that reaches the output. This decomposition is then compared across model sizes. For damage of comparable size, smaller models restore most of the loss, whereas larger models retain most of it, because the compensating responses offset less of it as models grow. Compressing the heads produces the same pattern. Compression that is nearly harmless in small models can therefore be costly in large ones.

Write Facts the Way Models Read Them: Lifting the Two-Hop Curse

Zhiyun Shi

原文摘要

A language model that learns a new fact by fine-tuning can repeat it but cannot reason with it: taught that a person is a citizen of a new country, it still cannot say, without chain-of-thought, who the head of state of that person's country is. This two-hop curse is widely treated as a reasoning deficit, and the strongest knowledge editors answer it with synthesized reasoning data. We show that the reasoning is intact and the writing is wrong. Fine-tuning writes a new fact as an answer to be said, whereas the second hop reads the bridge ("that person's country") as an entity, from the middle layers on: patching the model's own representation of the entity into the bridge at those layers largely restores the second hop, yet after fine-tuning the bridge there is no closer to the new entity than before the edit. We therefore propose read-equivalent writing (Legible): one loss term makes the bridge phrase, at the layer where the second hop finishes reading it, match the model's own reading of the new entity, and keeps the same relation's other subjects unchanged. Phrases and targets come from the edited model itself, and no multi-hop training data is used. Across Qwen2.5, Llama-3 and Qwen3, Legible (I) composes learned facts more often than the model composes its own knowledge, on MQuAKE's two-hop-curse questions; (II) reaches 1.8-2.6x the bridge accuracy of CaKE, whose reasoning data composes no better than plain fine-tuning, and has the best average over composition, accuracy and locality against four families of writers; and (III) lifts the curse on RippleEdits, on the benchmark of Balesni et al., who named the curse, and at 14B.

The Intrusion Pathway: How Non-Evidential Context Degrades Language Model Performance

原文摘要

Language models lose accuracy when a prompt contains non-evidential context: irrelevant statements from unrelated domains, or random off-distribution tokens, with no competing answer and no semantic overlap with the query. Such noise pervades retrieval-augmented, tool-using, and long-context deployments, yet the failure has lacked a mechanistic account. We trace the corruption to the Intrusion Pathway, which starts with MLPs enriching both query-subject and irrelevant-token representations, parroting heads carry prefix-token content to the prediction position, and relational readers largely avoid unrelated sources. Nevertheless, preserved subject enrichment and selective reading do not prevent intrusion in the broader computation. We then localize part of this interference to a sparse set of attention heads, which we call intrusion heads. Their prefix-derived writes promote distractor-related content, while their reduced support for the correct answer arises primarily from weaker non-prefix contributions rather than direct suppression by the prefix. The same heads transfer across tasks and distractor types and are largely weight-disjoint from the heads that integrate relevant contextual evidence, enabling a class-conditional intervention. Replacing the corrupted last-token residual with its clean counterpart, an oracle probe that requires a matched clean forward pass, recovers 97.6% on average of the distractor-induced drop across four downstream tasks. A deployable mask level knockout of about ten heads, roughly 1% of the model's attention heads, recovers 57% at bounded cost to helpful context.

Survival In-Context: Amortized Bayesian Survival Analysis via Prior-Fitted Networks

原文摘要

Survival analysis is crucial for many medical applications, but remains challenging for modern machine learning due to limited data, censoring, and the heterogeneity of tabular covariates. While the prior-fitted paradigm, which relies on pretraining models on large collections of synthetic datasets, has recently facilitated tabular foundation models for classification and regression, its suitability for time-to-event modeling remains unclear. We propose a flexible survival data generation framework that defines a rich survival prior with explicit control over covariates and time-event distributions. Building on this prior, we introduce Survival In-Context (SIC), a prior-fitted in-context learning model for survival analysis that is pretrained exclusively on synthetic data. SIC is trained to approximate Bayesian posterior predictive inference under the synthetic survival prior, enabling individualized survival prediction in a single forward pass, requiring no task-specific training or hyperparameter tuning. Across a broad evaluation on real-world survival datasets, SIC achieves competitive or superior performance compared to classical and deep survival models, particularly in small and medium-sized data regimes, highlighting the promise of a prior-fitted paradigm for survival analysis. The code and pretrained models are available at https://github.com/yayapa/sic

A Neural Operator based on Dynamic Mode Decomposition

原文摘要

The scientific computation methods development in conjunction with artificial intelligence technologies remains a hot research topic. Finding a balance between lightweight and accurate computations is a solid foundation for this direction. The study presents a neural operator based on the dynamic mode decomposition algorithm (DMD), mapping functional spaces, which combines DMD and deep learning (DL) for spatiotemporal processes efficient modeling. Solving PDEs for various initial and boundary conditions requires significant computational resources. The method suggested automatically extracts key modes and system dynamics using them to construct predictions, reducing computational costs compared to traditional numerical methods. The approach has demonstrated its efficiency through comparative analysis of performance with closest analogues DeepONet and FNO in the heat equation, Laplaces equation, and Burgers equation solutions approximation, where it achieves high reconstruction accuracy.

IMUDINO: Self-distilled Foundation Model for Inertial Sensing

原文摘要

We present IMUDINO, the first foundation model (FM) for inertial sensing to achieve competitive performance across diverse sensing tasks including human activity recognition (HAR), health, motion capture, and odometry. Prior inertial FMs often focus on one subfield of inertial sensing and sometimes underperform state-of-the-art supervised methods (e.g., in HAR), making their scope considerably narrower than FMs for vision and natural language. Moreover, they often require fixed input length and sampling rate, and generalize poorly to unseen sensor locations. To build a general-purpose foundation model for inertial sensing, we adapt the DINO self-supervised learning (SSL) paradigm to inertial data through a set of semantics-preserving motion transformations that simulate variations in motion pattern and sensor setup. For model architecture, we use a plain transformer encoder with frequency-aware positional encoding that natively supports varying input length and sampling rate. This simple setup proved remarkably effective for learning global and dense features generalizable across users, sensor setups, tasks, and, in the case of robot odometry, embodiments. We hope IMUDINO can serve as a backbone for inertial sensing and kickstart the development of general-purpose inertial FMs.

Archetypal contexts in the neurons of language models: an architecture for intelligence?

David Nordfors

原文摘要

We validate our previous hypothesis that a language model holds relational patterns apart from the subject domains that instantiate them (Nordfors, 2026). These archetypal contexts are patterns of relations that people recognize across many fields, such as the tipping point or winner takes all, held once and applied across domains. We show this inside the model, Qwen3.8-27B. One set of neurons carries the archetype, say the tipping point; another carries the topic, say politics, ecology or cell biology; a third carries the language, such as English, Spanish or Chinese. Silence the tipping point's neurons, and the model no longer identifies the pattern but still knows what the text is about. Silence the topic's, and it loses the topic but still names the pattern. In the neuron maps the layers organize themselves into a sandwich: the outer layers carry languages, the layers inside them topics, the layers at the heart archetypes. The sandwich emerges spontaneously during pretraining and appears in every model we mapped. Archetypes are the architecture for analogy, and we strongly suggest that this structure of archetypes and topics is the mechanism of a language model's intelligence: we see it self-organize as the model is trained. The neurons, the texts and the code are released with this paper as its reproduction package, so that anyone can repeat the test inside the model.

Empirical Study of Pop and Jazz Mix Ratios for Genre-Adaptive Chord Generation

Jinju Lee

原文摘要

This paper treats chord progression generation as a standalone task and asks how much old-domain data must be retained in fine-tuning to acquire a new genre without forgetting the old. I study jazz fine-tuning of a pop-pretrained 25M-parameter Music Transformer (84.21% top-1 next-token accuracy on a held-out pop test set). The jazz corpus is over two orders of magnitude smaller than the pop corpus, so every run uses all 1,513 jazz training sequences, and the swept variable is the volume of pop "rehearsal" data mixed alongside: 0, 1K, 2.5K, 5K, or 10K. At the tabulated best epochs every fine-tuned run gains 7 to 9 points of jazz top-1 (the released F1 checkpoint equals the Phase 0 baseline, as the paper's Correction explains), and pop top-1 falls by 2.11 points under jazz-only fine-tuning but by at most 1.19 with rehearsal. Top-1 also scores the three header tokens of each sequence, and two of them shift whole runs: the jazz-majority runs predict the jazz genre marker even for pop songs, and most test songs carry a placeholder C-major key that a checkpoint predicts for every such song or for none, as the best epochs of F1 and F3 happen to do. Scored without the header tokens, every run gains 7.2 to 7.8 jazz points, jazz-only fine-tuning loses 1.48 pop points, and the four rehearsal volumes lose pop at nearly one rate, within 0.11 points of each other at every epoch and 0.73 to 0.90 points below baseline by their last epoch. The smallest volume tested (0.66x the jazz volume) already gives nearly all the measured protection, and no volume stops a slow decline. In informal listening the author more often selects the 10K and 1K endpoints, which carry more committed stylistic identities, than the middle of the sweep, but no formal listening study has been conducted. All six checkpoints and the selection-corrected F1 retrain ft-pop80-v2 are released at https://huggingface.co/PearlLeeStudio.

How Far Can Chord-Symbol Time-Series Adaptation Carry Genre Identity? Capabilities and Boundaries in Multi-Genre Chord-Symbol Modeling

Jinju Lee

原文摘要

This report treats chord-symbol sequences as an interpretable, controllable time series for genre-local harmonic modeling. The frozen Music Transformer base is weight-identical to a pop-dominated Phase-0 baseline. I adapt it to eleven target genres: blues, bossa nova, Bach chorales, country, electronic, folk, funk, gospel, hip-hop, R&B/soul, and rock. The main grid compares LoRA, IA3, BitFit, prefix tuning, and full fine-tuning over 11 genres and 3 seeds (165 cells). All five methods improve over the frozen base on held-out chord prediction (macro gains +2.89 to +3.61 percentage points). Top-1 also scores the three header tokens of each sequence, which move whole runs: only a matched adapter predicts its genre marker, and whether a run predicts the placeholder C-major key of every Chordonomicon song is close to arbitrary. Without the header tokens the macro gains are +1.64 to +2.38 pp, and outside Bach chorales LoRA, IA3, prefix tuning, and full fine-tuning give the same gain (+1.30 to +1.34 pp). That gain reflects a handicap of the frozen base, which for every target but rock reads a genre marker it never read in training: given the pop marker instead, it comes within 0.12 pp of the released matched adapter in every non-chorale genre. Wrong-genre adapters beat the frozen base only where it reads such a marker, and outside Bach chorales the matched adapter's edge over the best wrong one is within 0.2 pp. Only on Bach chorales does adaptation add clearly more (+9.6 pp for LoRA over the base given the pop marker). Further diagnostics (rank sweeps, matched-size and same-weights controls, chord-only classification, real songs) support a bounded conclusion: for genres the base already covers, chord-symbol adaptation mainly supplies a usable genre marker, and chord symbols alone do not carry complete genre identity. Perceived genre authenticity is left to controlled listener evaluation.

Modern data systems often require aggregating information from multiple sources: some might be entirely untrustworthy, while the remaining presumably reliable sources may still suffer from a small amount of corruption. We study robust mean estimation under this practical scenario, which is formulated through the double corruption model: samples are divided among $N$ users, each with $n$ samples. $\varepsilon$ fraction of the users could be arbitrarily corrupted, while each of the remaining ``good'' users still have $α$-fraction ($α>0$) of corrupted samples. The goal is to estimate the unknown mean $μ$ with small $\ell_2$ error. This is a challenging scenario because we must handle two types of adversarial corruption: user-level corruption and sample-level corruption. When the unknown distribution has covariance matrix bounded by the identity matrix, we design a sum-of-squares (SoS) algorithm that achieves an $\ell_2$ error of $\sqrtα$ with probability at least $2/3$ as long as the total number of samples $nN=\widetildeΩ(d/α)$. The estimation error and sample complexity are min-max optimal under the mild condition. For comparison, treating all $nN$ samples as $(\varepsilon+α)$-corrupted and applying standard robust mean estimation only achieves an error of $\sqrt{\varepsilon+α}$. Thus, our new algorithm removes the adverse effect of untrustworthy users and achieves the optimal error as if only sample-level corruption is present. Also, our SoS algorithm extends to the heterogeneous setting where each user's local mean could be additionally shifted by $\sqrtβ$ in $\ell_2$ distance. We show that an error of $O(\sqrt{α+β})$ can be achieved with probability at least $2/3$ when $nN=\widetildeΩ(d/(α+β))$.

A Diffusion-Based Kinematics and Dynamics Model for 3D Sign Language Production

Emanuele Colonna, Moises Diaz, Gennaro Vessio, Miguel Angel Ferrer, Giovanna Castellano

原文摘要

Sign Language Production (SLP) generates continuous signing from a linguistic input and drives accessibility technologies such as signing avatars. Current generators, diffusion models included, regress joint coordinates as an unstructured vector, so nothing ensures that the generated body respects anatomy or the mechanics of movement. Physics has entered SLP only through geometric loss terms, whose benefit for intelligibility has not been verified, and the dynamics of the signing body has not been modelled. We present PIDiffSign, a diffusion model informed by physics at two levels. For kinematics, a forward-kinematics head outputs bone directions and lengths and composes them into an anatomically exact skeleton. For dynamics, a rigid-body model of the upper body with anthropometric parameters supports two training priors. A physical-plausibility suite that includes two laws of motor control evaluates the generated signing. Under a controlled protocol, the head lowers back-translation word error rate by about five points on PHOENIX14T and CSL-Daily, whereas geometric penalties have no measurable effect; a control experiment traces the gain to the kinematic-chain representation and not to bone-length conservation. The dynamics priors gain about one further point over matched non-physical controls on PHOENIX14T, but not on CSL-Daily. Generated signing follows the laws of motor control as closely as real signing but carries markedly less kinetic energy. The exact skeletons can drive rigged avatars directly, and the suite offers a physical benchmark for future SLP systems.

EgoGen: An Egocentric Synthetic Data Generator

原文摘要

Understanding the world in first-person view is fundamental in Augmented Reality (AR). This immersive perspective brings dramatic visual changes and unique challenges compared to third-person views. Synthetic data has empowered third-person-view vision models, but its application to embodied egocentric perception tasks remains largely unexplored. A critical challenge lies in simulating natural human movements and behaviors that effectively steer the embodied cameras to capture a faithful egocentric representation of the 3D world. To address this challenge, we introduce EgoGen, a new synthetic data generator that can produce accurate and rich ground-truth training data for egocentric perception tasks. At the heart of EgoGen is a novel human motion synthesis model that directly leverages egocentric visual inputs of a virtual human to sense the 3D environment. Combined with collision-avoiding motion primitives and a two-stage reinforcement learning approach, our motion synthesis model offers a closed-loop solution where the embodied perception and movement of the virtual human are seamlessly coupled. Compared to previous works, our model eliminates the need for a pre-defined global path, and is directly applicable to dynamic environments. Combined with our easy-to-use and scalable data generation pipeline, we demonstrate EgoGen's efficacy in three tasks: mapping and localization for head-mounted cameras, egocentric camera tracking, and human mesh recovery from egocentric views. EgoGen will be fully open-sourced, offering a practical solution for creating realistic egocentric training data and aiming to serve as a useful tool for egocentric computer vision research. GibbsLens: Training-Free Camera Control via Block-Conditional Gibbs Refinement

Yuzhu Wang, Xi Ye, Duo Su, Yangyang Xu, Jun Zhu

原文摘要

Training-free camera control for pretrained flow-matching video generators is a partial-observation inverse problem: a depth-warped guidance video supplies noisy evidence on a subset of latent sites, which the sampler must reconcile with the pretrained prior. Existing methods struggle to balance the trade-off between trajectory adherence and visual quality and the heuristic guidance-strength tuning lacks robustness. We propose GibbsLens, which resolves this dilemma through a structural change to the sampler: each outer hard-replacement guidance step is augmented with an inner-loop block-conditional pseudo-Gibbs refinement on the unobserved complement at the same noise level, with provable convergence to the partial-observation conditional data law. To accelerate convergence on high-dimensional video latents, we exploit their conditional locality, partitioning the unobserved complement into 3D patches, each tracked by a custom mixing indicator that adaptively freezes converged patches. On RealEstate10K and DAVIS, GibbsLens attains the best FVD against all seven training-free and training-based competitors, outperforming every training-free baseline on every reported metric. Selective Prediction Intervals: Jointly Learning to Predict, Bound, and Abstain

Lidor Rubi, Gilad Katz

原文摘要

Many high-stakes regression decisions ask three things of a model at once: a point estimate to act on, an interval that bounds the risk of acting, and the option to abstain when neither can be trusted. Deep learning provides these in isolation: prediction-interval methods return an interval, and at best a value estimate inside it, for every input, while selective-prediction methods learn when to abstain, but only for point predictions and with no statement of how far the truth may lie from the estimate. We introduce SelPI, which trains interval, value and abstention heads jointly under a single loss with an explicit acceptance-rate budget. A natural objection is that interval width already tells us when to abstain. We show that it does not: across 18 tabular benchmarks, width predicts large point errors well (AUROC 0.72) but is anti-correlated with interval misses (AUROC 0.38), so abstaining on wide intervals discards precisely the inputs the interval got right. SelPI therefore selects with two gates, one trained on the interval loss and one on the value loss, coupled by a Fr'echet penalty that ties their separate budgets to the joint acceptance rate they deliver. With the base predictor held fixed, the learned gate beats width thresholding on a proper interval score on all 18 tabular datasets, closing a median 87% of the gap to an oracle selector, and it also beats selection by deep-ensemble disagreement on every dataset. The advantage grows with the heteroscedasticity of the task, and we report the settings in which it disappears.

Wave Physics as Representation: Tensor-Structured Neural Reconstruction for Ocean Acoustic Fields

Yifan Sun, Panqi Chen, Weifeng Shi, Xiao Fu, Lei Cheng

原文摘要

Reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) complex ocean acoustic fields from sparse measurements is challenging due to highly oscillatory wave structures and restricted sensing patterns/routes. Learning-based approaches fall into two categories. First, purely data-driven models can learn complex field patterns, but do not explicitly exploit wave physics that may enhance interpretability and reduce training costs. Second, physics-informed methods impose a specified physical equation as a reconstruction constraint, but often require environment-dependent parameters that are difficult to acquire. As a result, practical 3D acoustic field reconstruction that is both physically grounded and robust to uncertain environmental information remains largely unexplored. This work takes an alternative route: instead of solving a fully specified wave equation, it extracts a structured representation from wave physics and learns its components from data. From the Helmholtz equation and normal mode propagation, we derive a structured spatial-angular tensor representation, termed the S/c representation. Under a low-rank specialization, it takes the form of a rank-(L,L,1) block-term tensor decomposition, which connects structured sampling patterns/routes used in ocean sensing to sufficient conditions for field recovery. Building on this tensor representation, we propose TIDAL, a neural reconstructor that uses the S/c representation as an inductive bias for structured decoding and aligns information aggregation with the sampling geometry. The neural learner removes the need for known model parameters required by conventional physics-based recovery methods. Experiments across three structured sampling geometries show that TIDAL achieves the best reconstruction performance and fastest inference among baselines, with benefits from the physics-derived representation under limited data and model capacity.

METRIC-GS: Selective Metric-Scale Estimation for 3D Gaussian Splatting

Sooyeun Yang, Jongseong Brad Choi

原文摘要

A 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) reconstruction inherits arbitrary units from structure-from-motion, so it cannot be measured or used to place AR content until someone supplies a scale. Both standard recipes are fragile on real captures: on five indoor scenes with tape-measured ceilings, a quantile floor-to-ceiling heuristic errs by 27% and metric-depth alignment by 35-71% across three networks. We present METRIC-GS, a selective scale estimator for real indoor photographs: it reads the scale off the reconstruction's own semantic content and, just as importantly, refuses when the evidence is thin. A frozen 2D teacher labels Gaussians by visibility-aware voting; instance-level size priors for architectural and furniture classes (doors, tables, the floor-to-ceiling gap) are fused by a robust maximum-likelihood step; and an inlier-mass test turns thin evidence into an explicit abstention that doubles as a router to a heavyweight metric model. On 47 ScanNet++ scenes with laser ground truth, with a configuration frozen before public evaluation, the estimator alone cuts the heuristic's mean error from 21.1% to 16.6% (9.3% on the 28 scenes it acts on) at ~11 s per scene. MASt3R remains the more accurate standalone estimator (9.9%), but routing only our refusals to it matches running it everywhere with 60% fewer invocations; this selective hybrid is the configuration we advocate. Visibility-aware voting raises the scenes the estimator can act on from 16 to 28 at unchanged deployed accuracy. Applied unchanged to 13 phone and drone captures of our own, on which MASt3R fails its own registration gate 12 times, the system improves all five captures it acts on and degrades none. We also report that a current feed-forward metric model scores 2.3% on a benchmark inside its training mixture and 28-35% on captures it has never seen: a published metric-scale number is a best case, not a deployment estimate.

A Hybrid Framework for Explainable Aviation Risk: Causal Chain Extraction from Safety Reports with Physics-Based Failure Quantification and Interventional Analysis

Yutian Pang, Yifang Tian, Xinyu Zhao, Jueming Hu, John-Paul Clarke, Hans-Arno Jacobsen

原文摘要

Aviation authorities hold decades of accident reports whose narratives record how investigators reconstructed each accident. Computational work on these archives has mostly sorted reports into fixed taxonomies. In this work, we propose a hybrid framework in which a text-based corpus identifies the leading factors of a failure mode. Physics-based models then quantify how likely that failure is at a stated operating point. Ordered causal chains extracted from 56{,}202 American accident reports with a local large language model aggregate into a causation knowledge graph. On an evaluation sample of 2{,}000 reports, the chains recover 90.8\% of investigator-flagged causes. Each physical factor whose drivers the record carries receives an occurrence model calibrated to the accident population. A leaky noisy-OR fitted to the corpus combines the factors into a failure mode probability that supports intervention. For engine power loss, the carburetor icing model separates 1{,}205 icing accidents from other accidents using temperature and dewpoint alone, reaching 0.61 in area under the receiver operating characteristic curve against a density ratio ceiling of 0.64. Routine weather hours give no valid control, because flying concentrates in fair weather. On later years the physics adds 0.03 to that area for occurrence and nothing for severity, so its value lies in interpretability. On four named accidents, abduction gives a probability of necessity of 0.29 to 0.50 for the heat omission, under monotonicity. The Fast Causal Inference algorithm does not license the largest backdoor adjustment on the learned networks.

PixCon: Clean-Positive Contrastive Learning for Foundation-Model Semi-Supervised Segmentation

Ebenezer Tarubinga

原文摘要

Can a simple labeled-pixel contrastive branch improve semi-supervised segmentation with a strong pretrained encoder? We study this question with PixCon, which adds a class-wise memory bank to a DINOv2-Base implementation of UniMatch V2. The bank stores ground-truth-labeled features only where the student prediction agrees with the label. A multi-positive contrastive loss uses these features to train the shared encoder-decoder; the head and bank are discarded at inference. This simplifies earlier labeled-pixel banks by removing confidence thresholds and learned ranking. On Pascal VOC with 183 labels, PixCon improves all three paired seeds by 0.20, 0.64 and 1.83 mIoU points, raising the mean from 87.01 to 87.90. With 92 labels the mean gain is 0.40 points; single-seed differences on Cityscapes and ADE20K range from -0.08 to +0.14 points. A predicted-label contrastive control reaches nearly the same Pascal accuracy, so these results support the added branch rather than an accuracy benefit from its correctness filter. An exact gradient decomposition distinguishes mislabeled-positive counts from their similarity-weighted influence. Separate teacher diagnostics find retained-pixel error rates of 1.8% on Pascal and 10.6% on ADE20K. These diagnostics do not measure the training bank or predict final accuracy. PixCon adds 15.3-19.7% iteration time in the measured runs and no inference computation. We report paired seeds, training cost and the limits of the evidence.

KV-PRM: Efficient Process Reward Modeling via KV-Cache Transfer for Multi-Agent Test-Time Scaling

Peng Kuang, Haibo Jin, Xiaoyu Han, Yanli Wang, Xiaopeng Yuan, Ye Yu, Kaidi Xu, Haohan Wang

原文摘要

Process Reward Models (PRMs) have been proven to be highly effective in guiding test-time scaling (TTS) methods, which significantly boost the capabilities of LLM-based multi-agent systems. However, existing PRMs are text-based: they re-encode the entire trajectory text from scratch. In long multi-agent rollouts, the scoring cost, growing quadratically with respect to sequence length L, creates a severe computational bottleneck, severely limiting PRMs' application in long-context scenarios. To resolve this, we introduce KV-PRM, a highly efficient process reward model that eliminates the heavy text re-encoding by directly reading the KV cache produced naturally during the LLM's generation phase. By processing a single "verify token" against the pre-existing KV cache, KV-PRM reduces the scoring cost from O(L^2) to O(L). We formally prove that the KV cache contains strictly greater information capacity than text, and is more efficient for downstream reward modeling. Empirically, across the MATH, GSM8K, and AIME benchmarks, KV-PRM matches or strictly outperforms text-PRMs under various TTS methods such as Beam Search, MCTS, and Weighted Voting, with up to a 5,000x reduction in scoring FLOPs, a 37x reduction in latency, and a 34x reduction in per-sequence memory footprint compared to text-based PRMs.

Diversity-Aware Experience Replay via Statistical Leverage Scores

Shaifalee Saxena, Alexander Scheinker

原文摘要

Off-policy deep reinforcement learning trains on random samples from a replay buffer of past experience. In physical robot settings, that buffer is dominated by routine: thousands of near-identical transitions from normal operation, while the rare events that define the edges of the task are rarely sampled. We propose scoring every stored transition by its statistical leverage, which measures how unusual it is relative to the buffer's own data, computed from the stored numbers alone, with no labels, rewards, or value network. We draw each mini-batch from a mixture of this score and uniform sampling. First, the natural way to build the score along the directions where the data varies most turns out to be blind when actions are stored as one-hot indicators, because indicator columns always win the variance ranking; we instead select the feature columns with the heaviest tails (largest kurtosis) where small far-away populations are revealed. Second, the importance weights that prioritized replay uses to keep gradients unbiased cancel the method exactly: with full correction, training matches uniform sampling, so we drop the correction and deliberately optimize the rebalanced objective. Third, when the rare situations of a log are relational, visible only in how a stretch of behavior relates to its goal, not in any single stored coordinate-per-transition scores are blind; applying the same tail rule to short trajectory windows described relative to their goal restores the signal, and on a three-joint arm that must push an object around an obstacle it raises the rare-task success from 0.49 to 0.69 against a labeled-oracle ceiling of 0.74.

When Does Better Confidence Improve a Knowledge-Graph Audit?

Zehao Lin, Kai Chen, Xixuan Hao, Erenkai Zhu, Chunyu Li, Helan Hu

原文摘要

Confidence estimates guide human review in LLM-built knowledge graphs, but better error prediction can yield little improvement in an audit. We study this gap through repairability, selection headroom and label validity. Modelling non-adaptive auditing as budgeted covering, we characterise the minimal decision-relevant error statistics and bound the regret of scalar-preserving first-order planning by a structural mass $Δ^{\mathrm{cl}}$. We simulate ideal repair against benchmark-aligned labels for five extraction configurations and two cross-document graphs on Re-DocRED, followed by frozen confirmation on test and replication on 500 hash-selected training documents. On the held-out cross-document graphs, an error-rate $\times$ fan-out queue leaves 3.98-4.74 percentage points more errors than a joint model with the same actions. By comparison, opening shared actions for that joint planner reduces residual errors by 0.89-1.43 points relative to its own fact-only plans, in point estimates. Equivalence between joint and independent-block models remains inconclusive. Generic LLM verification improves three of four model-budget configurations on each held-out set. LLM adjudication identifies possible benchmark omissions.

FlyHash for LLM Agent Memory: An Empirical Validation and a New Application

Mohan Bheemadolu, Chrisogonas O. Odhiambo

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) agents increasingly rely on external memory stores to retain information across conversations, typically via dense vector embeddings searched with approximate nearest-neighbor methods. The fruit fly's olfactory circuit computes a locality-sensitive hash of sensory input using a strikingly different mechanism - sparse random projection followed by winner-take-all competition - and prior work (Dasgupta et al., 2017) showed this scheme, dubbed FlyHash, preserves neighbor structure better per bit than conventional random-hyperplane hashing (SimHash) on several benchmarks. We apply FlyHash, to our knowledge for the first time, to LLM agent memory retrieval, and ask three questions a practitioner actually needs answered: does the quality advantage hold under a correctly matched-bit protocol (it does, robustly, across 10 seeds and four datasets spanning two modalities, with one specific, previously undocumented comparison pitfall identified and corrected along the way); does that advantage translate into real memory and latency savings, including against the dense-vector indexing (HNSW) practitioners default to today (no: at equal bits FlyHash's codes are larger and slower to compare than SimHash's, and HNSW dominates both hash methods at ordinary scale; a sparse-set comparison we introduce recovers most but not all of a naive latency gap, leaving hashing's practical case narrower and more specific than the quality result alone implies); and does the advantage survive genuine, non-circular agent-memory relevance labels rather than the nearest-neighbor-by-embedding proxy this literature otherwise relies on (it does). We report all three answers precisely, including the two that narrow rather than flatter the headline result, and release our implementation, a working agent-memory demo, and a full account of the methodological pitfalls we found and corrected.

Vision-Guided Reorientation and Color Sorting of Writing Utensils Using a Low-Cost 4-DoF Arm

Anirudh Rangarajan, Bibit Bianchini

原文摘要

Low-cost four-degree-of-freedom (DoF) arms are among the most accessible robotic platforms. But they are one joint short for picking up in situations where objects are at arbitrary orientations, a task that appears to require five degrees of freedom: the planar position (x and y), the height (z), a wrist rotation to align the gripper with the object, and gripper actuation, of which a four-DoF arm lacks the wrist rotation. This work uses perception and motion planning so that such an arm, a roughly $200 Waveshare RoArm-M2-S under a fixed overhead camera, can detect and color-sort writing utensils without that joint. A YOLO11n-OBB (You Only Look Once, oriented bounding box) detector locates each writing utensil; camera intrinsics and an ArUco reference pose convert its pixel coordinates to robot coordinates; and a color classifier labels it. The detected orientation angle determines the motion strategy: utensils close to the arm's fixed approach direction are picked up directly, and those at steeper angles are reoriented via corrective sweeps until they are graspable, after which they are picked up and sorted into the assigned color bin. In 196 single-utensil trials, the 98 that started beyond 45 degrees from that direction all became graspable within four sweeps (130 total). Overall, 176 (89.8%) ended in the correct bin; 19 of 20 failures were slipped or missed grasps, one a mislabeled color. For the seven utensils tested in this setup, corrective sweeps brought every steeply misaligned utensil into a graspable orientation on an arm with no wrist joint.

Self-Supervised Learning of Universal Latent Spaces for Operator Learning

Sepehr Mousavi, Levi Lingsch, Siddhartha Mishra, Laura De Lorenzis

原文摘要

Neural operators fit their representation of functions to the task they are trained on, so every new task rebuilds a reduced space from labeled data. Following the self-supervised pre-training that made representations shareable in natural language processing and computer vision, we decouple representation learning from operator learning. A functional autoencoder is pre-trained on analytic functions synthesized on the fly, with no solver and no labels, to represent functions on arbitrary point clouds, and the latent space it induces is frozen and reused across tasks. The representation is exactly equivariant to translation, dilation, and amplitude, and reconstructs solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs) and natural images on geometries it never saw. Being task-agnostic, the latent space can be interpreted in its own right. The whole space is used and decodes to valid fields, it preserves the ordering of distances between physical fields, its geodesics interpolate physical evolutions, and edit directions transfer across fields. With frozen representation maps, a dataset is encoded once and a neural operator is trained entirely on cached embeddings, which saves memory and training time. On 28 tasks in fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, acoustics, and the Helmholtz and Poisson equations, this paradigm can exceed the accuracy of state-of-the-art end-to-end architectures, with up to an order of magnitude higher throughput and memory savings that fit models nearly two orders of magnitude larger on consumer-grade GPUs. At inference, latent rollouts run up to an order of magnitude faster than regular rollouts, and chunked inference processes functions of over half a billion points on a single consumer-grade GPU.

Neural networks become centroid classifiers when trained on heavily corrupted inputs

Justin Tahmassebpur, Asadullah Bhuiyan, Hyejin Kim, Omri Lesser

原文摘要

Learning from imperfect data is a central theme in machine learning, connecting practical questions of robustness to fundamental questions of learnability. Here we examine attribute noise: learning from corrupted inputs while keeping the labels intact, a setting that has received considerably less analytical attention than its label-noise counterpart. We consider two types of corruption models: additive noise and replacement noise. Through experiments with multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) on corrupted classification datasets, we find that neural networks remain robust, maintaining well-above-chance accuracy even when inputs are >90% corrupted -- far beyond human recognition. To understand this robustness, we analyze infinite-width networks in the heavy-corruption regime using a mean-field-inspired approach and derive a leading-order decision rule for the classification outcome: the network implements a prototype rule, the nearest-class-mean, assigning each test point to the class whose training-set average it most closely resembles. This leading-order decision rule is universal across a broad range of MLP architectures, holding for any depth, as well as a wide class of activation functions and noise distributions. The same centroid mechanism closely matches finite-width network behavior in our experiments and provides an interpretable and analytically tractable account of why learning can succeed even when individual training examples carry almost no signal.

Decision Models as Scalable Economic Surrogates that Capture Human Variation

Maxime Saxena, Fabio Caccioli, R. Maria del Rio-Chanona

原文摘要

Decision Models (DMs), a new class of AI models, give fast responses and return a probability distribution over a fixed set of options. These properties make them candidate human surrogates in economic simulations and surveys, a role increasingly filled by Large Language Models (LLMs), which are costly at scale and under-represent the variation in human behaviour. We present a first evaluation of DMs as human surrogates in economics, comparing 10 DMs with 8 LLMs in three economic settings: a household spending survey on consumption, several classic economic games and a labour-market field experiment. Frontier DMs, those that score highest on general decision-making benchmarks, reproduce the variation in human responses more closely than LLMs in all three settings. They capture the modal human response as well as LLMs in the spending survey, but less well in the economic games. Frontier DMs are also roughly ten times faster than the fastest LLM and can be over a hundred times cheaper. Together, these results suggest that DMs capture the heterogeneity of human behaviour better than LLMs and make large-scale economic simulations more feasible.
