SpeechEQ: Benchmarking Emotional Intelligence Quotient in Socially Aware Voice Conversational Models

Liang-Yuan Wu, Zih-Ching Chen, Tongshuang Wu, Chao-Han Huck Yang, Hua Shen

As multimodal conversational systems increasingly engage in spoken interaction, their ability to navigate paralinguistic social cues has become a critical bottleneck for natural human-AI communication. However, existing evaluations of machine emotional intelligence assess reasoning exclusively through isolated text or passive acoustic perception, overlooking the complex cross-modal reasoning required for active, multi-turn dialogue. We introduce \textsc{SpeechEQ}, a comprehensive framework designed to evaluate the sociolinguistic reasoning of Speech-Language Models (SLMs). The framework includes a validated dataset of 2,265 dialogues across 15 Emotional Quotient (EQ) subscales grounded in EQ-i 2.0 theory, along with a multi-turn evaluation protocol measured by our proposed Spoken EQ (SEQ) score inspired by human EQ assessments. Experiments show limitations in how both existing Speech Emotion Recognition and end-to-end Speech-Language Models understand and apply paralinguistic cues through speech. While end-to-end architectures outperform cascaded systems, \textsc{SpeechEQ} reveals that current multimodal models remain bottlenecked by a text-reliant ``modality shortcut,'' an alignment-induced ``safety trap,'' and ``contextual amnesia,'' highlighting the barriers to truly emotionally aware AI. Our benchmark can be accessed at https://huggingface.co/datasets/SpeechEQ/SpeechEQ and demo page at https://speecheq.github.io

RoboSnap: One-Shot Real-to-Sim Scene Generation for Generalizable Robot Learning and Evaluation

Recovering real-world scenes as interactive simulation environments can enable generalizable robot learning and reproducible policy evaluation. However, constructing scenes that are both physically stable and visually faithful remains slow and expensive. In this work, we present RoboSnap, a real-to-sim framework that turns a single RGB image into a simulation-ready scene. The key idea is a layered design that separates the physics-critical interaction area from the surrounding visual context: collision-aware foreground assets are refined for stable robot interaction, while a 3D Gaussian splatting visual layer preserves faithful background appearance under novel views. Experiments on DROID scenes and real-robot tasks show that RoboSnap achieves reliable trajectory replay in the recovered scenes, supports task-specific synthetic data generation for policy training, and yields meaningful sim-real correlation for policy evaluation. To further support real-to-sim research, we introduce DROID-Sim, a real-to-sim companion dataset constructed from 564 real-world scenes in DROID. Extensive experiments suggest that the value of real-to-sim methods lies not only in high-fidelity visual reconstruction, but in turning real environments into reusable infrastructure for robot learning and evaluation.

Fine-grained action annotations can support skill reuse and compositional generalization in robot policies. However, robot datasets typically provide task-level instructions without subtask annotations. Although some include subtask labels, inconsistent formats and conventions hinder cross-source joint training. We propose RoboAtom-Data, which adds unified, time-aligned atomic-action annotations to existing data from multiple sources, covering 1.45 million trajectories, 6.88 million skill-labeled segments, and 16,882.1 hours. Our pipeline combines a unified protocol, large-scale manual annotation, propagation across repeated executions with the same ordered skill sequence, and multi-stage quality control. We evaluate the dataset through automatic atomic-action annotation and robot control. We construct RoboAtom-Bench to standardize evaluation of skill recognition and temporal boundary localization. Trained on the annotated data, RoboAtom-Anno achieves better automatic annotation performance than all evaluated open- and closed-source models on both RoboAtom-Bench and the external WGO-Bench. For robot control, atomic-action supervision paired with hierarchical execution improves task success over task-level baselines on LIBERO-Long, LIBERO-Plus, and RoboTwin. We will release the data, benchmark, model, and construction pipeline to support further research on skill-level robot learning.

Past, Future, All at Once: Mitigating Stability-Plasticity Dilemma via Post-hoc JANUS Rectification

Zhilong Zheng, Letian Tao, Yujie Yang, Wei Xiong, Kehua Sheng, Bo Zhang, Jingliang Duan, Keqiang Li 等 10 位作者

Fine-tuning foundation models on new tasks inevitably suffer from catastrophic forgetting. While existing works attempt to mitigate this on the basis of parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods, they adopted an overly restrictive Subspace Orthogonality condition. In this paper, we introduce a purely post-hoc and tuning-agnostic weight rectification framework that achieves Parameter Space Orthogonality, which is the necessary and sufficient condition for preserving historical performance to the first order. By projecting parameter updates into the JAcobian NUll Space (JANUS), our method significantly recovers compromised historical knowledge without interfering with the underlying fine-tuning process. To overcome the local validity of the Jacobian approximation, we further propose a Multi-step Adaptive Rectification mechanism that utilizes the JANUS shift to dynamically verify the valid trust region and adjust step sizes. Coupled with our proposed ghost projection, ghost orientation comparison, and sequence-level singular value decomposition compression techniques, JANUS also achieves great temporal and spatial efficiency. Experiments demonstrate that JANUS seamlessly integrates with various fine-tuning methods, significantly mitigating the stability-plasticity dilemma by recovering historical knowledge while preserving downstream task adaptation.

STAPO: Stabilizing Reinforcement Learning for LLMs by Silencing Rare Spurious Tokens

Shiqi Liu, Zeyu He, Guojian Zhan, Letian Tao, Zhilong Zheng, Jiang Wu, Yinuo Wang, Yang Guan 等 13 位作者

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has significantly improved large language model reasoning, but existing RL fine-tuning methods rely heavily on heuristic techniques such as entropy regularization and reweighting to maintain stability. In practice, they often suffer from late-stage performance collapse, leading to degraded reasoning quality and unstable training. We identify a key factor behind this instability: a small fraction of tokens, termed spurious tokens (around 0.01%), which contribute little to the reasoning outcome but receive disproportionately amplified gradient updates due to inheriting the full sequence-level reward. We present a unified framework for evaluating token-level optimization impacts across spurious risk, gradient norms, and entropy changes. Building on the analysis of token characteristics that severely disrupt optimization, we propose the Silencing Spurious Tokens (S2T) mechanism to efficiently suppress their gradient perturbations. Incorporating this mechanism into a group-based objective, we propose Spurious-Token-Aware Policy Optimization (STAPO), which promotes stable and effective large-scale model refinement. Across six mathematical benchmarks and three model scales, STAPO consistently demonstrates superior entropy stability and achieves average accuracy improvements over baselines including GRPO, 20-Entropy, and JustRL under two widely-adopted evaluation settings.

Profiling a Frontier Agent with EBench: From Direct Control to Harness with Policy

Frontier multimodal large language models (MLLMs) can control robots without robot-specific training, but how their capabilities compare and interact with post-trained vision-language-action (VLA) and world action model (WAM) policies across manipulation demands remains to be thoroughly evaluated. In this report, we evaluate GPT-6-Astra on EBench as the core of an agent that controls a robot through an agent harness under the same visual and proprioceptive observation protocol as post-trained policies. We study two agent configurations: direct control, in which the agent generates waypoint commands directly, and harness with policy, in which it can also invoke a post-trained VLA or WAM policy for action execution. Under direct control, the agent achieves competitive overall performance relative to post-trained policies. It leads on short-horizon tasks and exhibits the least performance variation across generalization dimensions, whereas it underperforms post-trained policies on long-horizon tasks, tabletop manipulation, and high-precision contact-rich tasks. In the harness with policy, invoking a post-trained VLA or WAM combines the complementary strengths of both components, raising overall task success to the level of the strongest compared post-trained policies while substantially reducing token cost. However, performance remains below the per-task upper bound of the standalone components due to suboptimal policy invocation, fixed-instruction execution without subgoals, and grasp disruption when the agent resumes control. Overall, our study characterizes the capability boundary of a frontier MLLM agent and suggests directions for improving future agent harness design. Efficient Self-Evaluation for Diffusion Language Models via Sequence Regeneration

Linhao Zhong Zhejiang University, Linyu Wu National University of Singapore, Wen Wang Zhejiang University, Yuling Xi, Chenchen Jing, Jiaheng Zhang National University of Singapore, Hao Chen Zhejiang University, Chunhua Shen Zhejiang University

Diffusion large language models (dLLMs) have recently attracted significant attention for their ability to enhance diversity, controllability, and parallelism. However, their non-sequential, bidirectionally masked generation makes quality assessment difficult, underscoring the need for effective self-evaluation. In this work, we propose DiSE, a simple yet effective self-evaluation confidence quantification method for dLLMs. DiSE quantifies confidence by computing the probability of regenerating the tokens in the entire generated sequence, given the full context. This method enables more efficient and reliable quality assessment by leveraging token regeneration probabilities, facilitating both likelihood estimation and robust uncertainty quantification. Building upon DiSE, we further introduce a flexible-length generation framework, which adaptively controls the sequence length based on the model’s self-assessment of its own output. We analyze and validate the feasibility of DiSE from the perspective of dLLM generalization, and empirically demonstrate that DiSE is positively correlated with both semantic coherence and answer accuracy. Extensive experiments on likelihood evaluation, uncertainty quantification, and flexible-length generation further confirm the effectiveness of the proposed DiSE.

Beyond Hard Masks: Progressive Token Evolution for Diffusion Language Models

Linhao Zhong Zhejiang University, Linyu Wu National University of Singapore, Bozhen Fang, Tianjian Feng, Chenchen Jing, Wen Wang Zhejiang University, Jiaheng Zhang National University of Singapore, Hao Chen Zhejiang University 等 9 位作者

Diffusion Language Models (DLMs) offer a promising alternative for language modeling by enabling parallel decoding through iterative refinement. However, most DLMs rely on hard binary masking and discrete token assignments, which hinder the revision of early decisions and underutilize intermediate probabilistic representations. In this paper, we propose EvoToken-DLM, a novel diffusion-based language modeling approach that replaces hard binary masks with evolving soft token distributions. EvoToken-DLM enables a progressive transition from masked states to discrete outputs, supporting revisable decoding. To effectively support this evolution, we introduce continuous trajectory supervision, which aligns training objectives with iterative probabilistic updates. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmarks show that EvoToken-DLM consistently achieves superior performance, outperforming strong diffusion-based and masked DLM baselines. Our code is available at https://github.com/aim-uofa/EvoTokenDLM.
