QUEST: Training Frontier Deep Research Agents with Fully Synthetic Tasks

Deep research agents extend the role of search engines from retrieving keyword-matched pages to synthesizing knowledge, fundamentally changing how humans interact with information. However, frontier systems remain proprietary, while existing open agents often generalize poorly across different task types, leaving unclear how to train a broadly capable deep research agent. We release QUEST, a family of open models (ranging from 2B to 35B) that serve as general-purpose deep research agents designed to handle a wide range of long-horizon search tasks, with strong capabilities in fact seeking, citation grounding, and report synthesis. To build QUEST, we propose an effective training recipe combining mid-training, supervised fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning. Central to this recipe is a curated data synthesis pipeline based on unified rubric trees, which applies to different task types and enables synthesizing training data with verifiable rewards without human annotation. In addition, QUEST incorporates a built-in context management mechanism that enables effective long-horizon reasoning and knowledge synthesis. Using only 8K synthesized tasks, QUEST approaches or even surpasses frontier closed-source agents across eight deep research benchmarks spanning diverse task types, and achieves the best overall performance among recent open-weight agents. We released everything: models, data, and training scripts.

ParetoRSI-Gym: Can AI Agents Improve Language Models Across Multiple Domains?

Recursive self-improvement (RSI) requires an agentic system to design, train, and evaluate its own successor. Data-driven post-training is a central part of that loop, yet existing evaluations measure it on a single benchmark, where an agent selects from a static pool or distills a stronger model to push one score up in one run. Real post-training is multi-domain, and a gain in one domain has to be weighed against a regression in another. We propose ParetoRSI-Gym, in which an agent searches for data, curates it, trains, reads back per-domain results, and repeats, with everything but the data held fixed: the initial LLM, the five domains (math, code, finance, medicine, science), the toolset, and the SFT pipeline. Generalization benchmarks in each domain separate capability gains from overfitting to the scores the agent optimizes against. Across three agent systems, three base models, five rounds and multiple seeds, the strongest system, Claude Code with Opus-5, raises the generalization scores of its proxy-best checkpoint by 9.2% relative to the starting model (+2.3 absolute points), averaged with equal weight over three base models and five domains, with a single-domain relative gain of up to 63% (medicine on Ministral-3-3B). Further analysis shows that the harness matters as much as the model it drives, and that each agent keeps a unique data selection strategy. We see our work as a step towards evaluation of RSI systems in real-world machine learning engineering.

LCR-RAG: Enhancing Logical Consistency in Retrieval-Augmented Generation via Neuro-symbolic Reinforcement Learning

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is widely used to ground large language models (LLMs) in external knowledge and improve factual accuracy. Prior work has explored iterative and self-reflective mechanisms to refine reasoning, but these approaches rely on internal model judgment and lack formally grounded, verifiable feedback. As a result, RAG systems may still produce logically inconsistent or contradictory answers in multi-step reasoning. In this paper, we propose LCR-RAG, a framework that integrates neuro-symbolic verification with reinforcement learning to explicitly optimize logical consistency. The core of our approach is a Logic-Consistency-driven Reward (LCR), which converts discrete logical signals—such as contradictions or incomplete inference chains—into a structured reward signal. This reward guides a PPO-based agent to iteratively rewrite queries and correct reasoning errors. Experiments on HotpotQA, ASQA, and TriviaQA show that LCR-RAG consistently outperforms strong RAG baselines, with ablation results indicating that the LCR mechanism is the primary source of improvement, even under noisy or conflicting retrieval conditions.
