When Connectivity Misleads: Guiding Agentic Search with Contrastive Evidence Paths

Junchen Li, Liang Xu, Rongzheng Wang, Qizhi Chen, Junhao Wen, Shuang Liang

Search agents can use cross-document graphs to discover sources through multi-hop connections and choose subsequent actions based on candidate rankings and relationships within a limited observation window. However, documents may rank highly because their numerous connections make them easier to reach, without necessarily providing more valuable evidence. Graph diffusion methods such as Personalized PageRank (PPR) aggregate propagation contributions from multiple sources, allowing highly connected distractor nodes to crowd the observation window. Flat node scores also obscure cross-document evidence trails, limiting continued exploration. We propose Contrastive Evidence Paths (CEP), which scores candidates by their strongest individual paths on a query-conditioned document graph and calibrates these scores against the same graph's background visitation distribution to mitigate structural bias. CEP ranks candidates by the calibrated scores and retains the corresponding source paths. Building on CEP, we develop Structured Corpus Interaction (SCI), which organizes candidates and their connecting paths into a structured Map, enabling agents to verify source documents and pursue missing information through expansion from anchor documents. Experiments on BrowseComp-Plus and TREC-COVID show that SCI achieves state-of-the-art answer accuracy and nDCG@10 with the lowest generation cost. Compared with the strongest baselines by task performance, maximum reductions in tool calls and total generation costs exceed 50% and 40%, respectively. Further analysis confirms that SCI with CEP suppresses ranking inflation induced by structural connections and improves gold recall and exploration efficiency.

RobotAgentBench: Towards Open-world Robot Autonomy

Lingjun Mao, Jinglin Cao, Lukun He, Wenpeng Xu, Yuchen Yan, Hengyu Jin, Zijun Zhang, Jinzhou Tang 等 25 位作者

Recent advances in vision-language-action (VLA) and world-action models (WAMs) have significantly improved robotic manipulation, yet deploying robots in the open world demands a higher level of autonomy beyond executing predefined tasks. Robot agents offer a promising paradigm for this transition, integrating task discovery, contextual reasoning, physical execution, and adaptive recovery into a closed interaction loop. However, existing benchmarks largely evaluate isolated capabilities, failing to capture the complexity of open-world robot autonomy. We introduce RobotAgentBench (RAB), a comprehensive benchmark for evaluating robot agents in realistic, open-world household environments. Through an agent-assisted, human-in-the-loop real-to-sim pipeline, RAB constructs 50 diverse household layouts with interactive objects and physically grounded tasks, encompassing 90 atomic tasks, 18 short-horizon tasks, 8 long-horizon tasks, and 4 open-ended scenarios. RAB provides a multi-level evaluation of robot agent capabilities: (1) task-level assessments systematically examine five complementary dimensions: task discovery, context reasoning, manipulation, failure recovery, and robustness; (2) scenario-level evaluation assesses how agents integrate these capabilities to autonomously fulfill high-level user needs. Furthermore, RAB enables systematic comparisons of standalone VLA/WAM models and diverse robot agent architectures under a unified planning-execution-verification framework. Extensive experiments reveal substantial gaps between manipulation and autonomy, demonstrate the advantages of agentic architectures and recursive self-improvement, and highlight the remaining challenges toward open-world robot autonomy.

Why Supervised Fine-Tuning Fails to Learn: A Systematic Study of Incomplete Learning in Large Language Models

Chao Xue, Yao Wang, Mengqiao Liu, Di Liang, Xingsheng Han, Peiyang Liu, Xianjie Wu Beijing Information Science & Technology University, Chenyao Lu Tencent AI Lab 等 14 位作者

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) is the standard approach for adapting large language models (LLMs) to downstream tasks. However, we observe a persistent failure mode: even after convergence, models often fail to correctly reproduce a subset of their own supervised training data. We refer to this behavior as the Incomplete Learning Phenomenon (ILP). This paper presents the first systematic study of ILP in LLM fine-tuning. We formalize ILP as post-training failure to internalize supervised instances and demonstrate its prevalence across multiple model families, domains, and datasets. Through controlled analyses, we identify five recurrent sources of incomplete learning: (1) missing prerequisite knowledge in the pre-trained model, (2) conflicts between SFT supervision and pre-training knowledge, (3) internal inconsistencies within SFT data, (4) left-side forgetting during sequential fine-tuning, and (5) insufficient optimization for rare or complex patterns. We introduce a diagnostic-first framework that maps unlearned samples to these causes using observable training and inference signals, and study several targeted mitigation strategies as causal interventions. Experiments on Qwen, LLaMA, and OLMo2 show that incomplete learning is widespread and heterogeneous, and that improvements in aggregate metrics can mask persistent unlearned subsets. The findings highlight the need for fine-grained diagnosis of what supervised fine-tuning fails to learn, and why.

Parameter Importance is Not Static: Evolving Parameter Isolation for Supervised Fine-Tuning

Zekai Lin University of Glasgow, Chao Xue, Di Liang, Xingsheng Han, Peiyang Liu, Xianjie Wu Beijing Information Science & Technology University, Lei Jiang Tencent AI Lab, Yu Lu 等 11 位作者

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) of large language models often suffers from task interference and catastrophic forgetting. Recent approaches alleviate this issue by isolating task-critical parameters during training. However, these methods represent a static solution to a dynamic problem, assuming that parameter importance remains fixed once identified. In this work, we empirically demonstrate that parameter importance exhibits temporal drift over the course of training. To address this, we propose Evolving Parameter Isolation (EPI), a fine-tuning framework that adapts isolation decisions based on online estimates of parameter importance. Instead of freezing a fixed subset of parameters, EPI periodically updates isolation masks using gradient-based signals, enabling the model to protect emerging task-critical parameters while releasing outdated ones to recover plasticity. Experiments on diverse multi-task benchmarks demonstrate that EPI consistently reduces interference and forgetting compared to static isolation and standard fine-tuning, while improving overall generalization. Our analysis highlights the necessity of synchronizing isolation mechanisms with the evolving dynamics of learning diverse abilities.

C-World: A Computer Use Agent Environment Creator

Ziqiao Xi, Shuang Liang, Qi Liu University of California, San Diego, Jiaqing Zhang, Letian Peng, Fang Nan University of California, San Diego, Meshal Nayim, Tianhui Zhang University of California, San Diego 等 12 位作者

To close the gap between LLM-based agents and humans in planning and reasoning, agents need large-scale, diverse environments for continuous learning—yet building such environments is itself prohibitively expensive. We present C-World, an environment creation system that enables users to build agent environments on demand. We define a complete agent environment through four components: an Action Space of 5,571 format-unified tools across 204 common applications, a Task Distribution engine that synthesizes long-horizon workflows with wild constraints, a Transition Function implemented as a state controller that injects realistic failures and perturbations, and a Reward Signal combining verifiable metrics with LLM-based judgment. C-World operates in two modes: a realistic mode grounded in live API execution, and a synthesized mode powered by the World Engine, which approximates tool behavior without live service access, enabling scalable environment creation—including environments for domains and tools that do not yet exist in the real world. Evaluation of nine state-of-the-art LLMs reveals that planning ability is uniformly strong but execution remains the bottleneck, and that constraint following—not tool invocation—is the dominant failure mode. The World Engine achieves Spearman \rho = 0.883 ranking correlation with real execution, and fine-tuning on just 1,170 C-World trajectories outperforms baselines trained on 119k samples, demonstrating C-World’s dual value as a rigorous evaluation environment and a scalable data engine.
