A Scientific Claim Stability Framework for Evaluating MRI Morphometry Pipelines

原文摘要

MRI morphometry pipelines are often evaluated by measurement agreement or downstream accuracy, yet their scientific value depends on the conclusions they support. Two pipelines can produce similar feature-level results yet support different conclusions about aging, cognitive decline, or neurodegeneration. We introduce Scientific Claim Stability (SCS), a claim-centric evaluation framework that converts region-of-interest (ROI) morphometry tables into auditable claim cards and evaluates their support under changes in dataset, processing pipeline, atlas, feature family, and target. Across 10,370 MRI scans from three datasets and five cohorts, SCS generates 2,783 claim cards and evaluates 89 claim-family pairs. The evaluation distinguishes stable, transferable, and fragile claims. FreeSurfer 8-FastSurfer comparisons show high evidence concordance and low anatomical-support overlap under the primary covariate specification. Acquisition-adjusted analyses show that the magnitude of support disagreement depends on the model specification. Structured review by specialists in geriatrics, neuroscience, and radiology, alongside auxiliary ChatGPT and Gemini reviewers, assesses claim plausibility, clarity, faithfulness, usefulness, and caution. SCS provides a reproducible way to audit the evidential stability of morphometry claims without assuming a universal gold standard.

Thermometer of Thoughts: Enhancing LLM’s Exploration via Attention Temperature Modulation

原文摘要

Improving the exploration of reasoning is essential for advancing Large Language Models’ (LLMs) problem-solving performance. Current methods primarily rely on output-level stochasticity, which decode within fixed reasoning patterns of LLM and suffer from insufficient exploration. In this paper, we introduce adjusting attention temperature to directly modulate the model’s internal focus during reasoning, which enables a dynamic shift between exploratory and focused processing. We reveal that moderate adjustments preserve LLM’s reasoning capability while producing problem hardness-dependent benefits: higher temperatures facilitate solving complex tasks by encouraging wider exploration, whereas lower temperatures mitigate overthinking on simpler problems. Leveraging this insight, we propose a two-stage inference strategy: first, attention temperature scaling modulates the LLM’s reasoning patterns to diversify the reasoning traces; then, a difficulty-aware aggregation scheme is introduced to effectively identify the most reliable solution from the generated candidates. Extensive evaluations show that our method improves Pass@10 by 6.78–14.20% and aggregation accuracy by 9.74% across 7 reasoning benchmarks.
