A Deep Learning Framework for Quantile Demand Forecasting in E-commerce with Doubly Censored Data

Ziwen Ye, Jiawen Wei, Teng Song, Chen Chen, Guangrui Ma

In recent years, a growing number of online retail companies have embraced deep learning models for demand forecasting, leveraging their scalability in processing large-scale datasets. Accurate demand forecasts enable improved planning and allow operational flexibility to adjust sales accordingly. Moreover, quantile estimation has gained widespread application as it offers valuable uncertainty quantification, thereby enhancing the robustness of decision-making processes. However, limited research has addressed the effective quantification of uncertainty when target labels are ambiguous. In retail, actual sales can be capped by stock and boosted by temporary promotions, whereas the target is underlying demand. Such scenarios are characterized by double censoring and no deep-learning pipeline yet exists for such data. In this paper, we introduce a straightforward framework for learning quantiles from doubly-censored observations and propose a tailored evaluation metric. Our approach is supported by theoretical guarantees, and we empirically demonstrate that our metric correlates well with the oracle calibration measure. Experimental results show that our estimator surpasses existing baselines. Finally, inventory simulations and real-world applications confirm the practical utility of our method in retail operations.

AWARE: Action-Entropy-Weighted and Attention-Guided Retrieval of Observation Evidence for Vision-Language-Action Models

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models combine multimodal perception with robotic control, demonstrating remarkable potential for generalizable manipulation. Yet, enhancing their execution typically relies on auxiliary sensory inputs (e.g., depth, 3D point clouds) or costly fine-tuning. Inspired by the insight that Feed-Forward Networks (FFNs) act as key-value memory, we propose Action-Entropy-Weighted and Attention-Guided Retrieval of Observation Evidence (AWARE), an effective, training-free, and plug-and-play module for VLAs. Specifically, AWARE tracks layer-wise uncertainty via an element-wise Action Entropy metric, and retrieves observation evidence into the element's FFN through associative memory lookup. Crucially, the retrieved features are weighted by instruction-guided cross-modal attention to isolate task-relevant observation cues, while injection strength is adaptively scaled by the element's entropy and relative network depth. This selectively channels observation evidence to high-entropy action dimensions and deep layers where grounding decays, while leaving converged representations intact. Across LIBERO, SIMPLER, CALVIN, and real-world robot manipulation, AWARE consistently improves diverse VLA architectures with minimal computational overhead, achieving the largest gains on long-horizon tasks without architectural changes or additional training. How High Can GPT-6 Astra Climb in Contact-Rich Manipulation? PhysLadder: A Hierarchical, Matched Sim-Real Benchmark for Physical Interaction

Haibao Yu, Jiaqi Meng, Zijian Zhang, Bowen Jing, Lei Yang, Yue Hu, Chenchen Ge, Yiming Hou 等 19 位作者

We introduce PhysLadder, a hierarchical Sim-Real benchmark for evaluating physical interaction capabilities in contact-rich manipulation. Its 16 household tasks span three cumulative levels: contact selection and geometric alignment (L1), force regulation within sustained contact (L2), and coordinated contact reconfiguration and force regulation (L3). Each task is instantiated in physically and visually matched simulated and real-world environments, with shared task definitions and success criteria. We evaluate GPT-6 Astra zero-shot with three trials per task in each environment. Real-world success rates decline from 80.0% at L1 to 47.6% at L2 and 0.0% at L3, with corresponding simulation rates of 66.7%, 47.6%, and 0.0%. Ten of the 16 tasks have identical success counts across environments; the remaining six differ by one success out of three trials. Across both environments, recurring difficulties in spatial reasoning, contact selection, force regulation, and coordination often prevent local physical progress from accumulating into task completion. These findings characterize Astra's observed capability boundary across increasing interaction demands and, for this model, support matched simulation as a repeatable, scalable testbed for studying the sustained, coordinated physical interactions that limit reliable manipulation.
