Autonomous fixed-wing interception using reinforcement learning

Daan van Hamersveld, Ewoud Smeur, Iurii Kriachko

原文摘要

Medium altitude, long endurance unmanned aerial systems such as Shahed-type strike drones are an unanswered threat in modern conflicts. Conventional air defense systems are too expensive to provide a feasible large-scale solution. Quadcopter interceptors are a cheap, battle-proven alternative, but their extremely limited flight time restricts them to low altitude targets at short range, whereas fixed-wing platforms have the endurance to reach higher altitude targets from longer distances. However, such interceptors are still operated manually. Recent developments in learning-based controllers show potential for automation. In this work, a fixed-wing interceptor is presented that is controlled by a neural network that maps filtered monocular vision observations directly to actuator commands. The policy was trained in a custom Python environment using reinforcement learning and proximal policy optimization. The policy was then deployed on a fixed-wing platform and tested in real interception scenarios. As a baseline, two classical guidance controllers were also developed and tested in simulation. The policy is able to intercept targets both in simulation and in real flight. In simulation, the policy outperforms the classical controllers under most conditions. The interceptor was ultimately successfully validated in real flight by intercepting maneuvering fixed-wing targets. This novel system shows the potential of artificial intelligence for autonomous control of fixed-wing interceptor drones.

Rethinking Model Aggregation for Federated Learning with Domain Skew: A Knowledge-Preserving Perspective

Haotian Wu, Xu Ji, Qiheng Li, Li Xiong, Zibin Pan

原文摘要

Domain skew challenges federated learning by requiring a shared model to accommodate distinct visual distributions. Domain-specific experts can capture these distributions separately, creating an opportunity to integrate their representations in a unified predictor. We propose Federated Knowledge-Preserving Learning (FKPL), a two-stage framework that combines domain-oriented expert training with prototype-based classifier calibration. First, a one-shot subspace-based clustering procedure groups clients for intra-cluster training. The resulting expert encoders are concatenated and frozen, preserving each learned feature mapping during global integration. Second, clients interpolate their concatenated features with class-matched domain prototypes and upload the resulting virtual features. The server trains a global linear classifier on these features, concentrating classifier optimization at the server after a single feature upload. FKPL achieves average accuracies of 73.01\%, 67.00\%, and 64.51\% on Office-Caltech-10, PACS, and a four-domain subset of DomainNet, respectively. On DomainNet, its cross-domain standard deviation is 7.50 percentage points, the lowest among the evaluated methods. With the same concatenated extractor, prototype-based calibration improves average accuracy over federated classifier training by 9.99 and 14.94 percentage points on Office-Caltech-10 and PACS. These results identify classifier calibration as an effective way to combine preserved domain representations into a global predictor.

Fairness-Aware Design for Contextual Experiments: Guaranteeing Reliability and Equity in Heterogeneous Subgroups

原文摘要

Experimental design is critical for evidence-based decision-making in healthcare, marketing, and public policy. However, designing efficient experiments across heterogeneous subgroups presents significant challenges. Existing methods often optimize for statistical power or overall sample efficiency, overlooking crucial fairness considerations across these different subgroups. To address this gap, we introduce a Fairness-Aware Contextual Track-and-Stop Design (F-CTSD) algorithm. The proposed F-CTSD algorithm provides statistical guarantees on subgroup fairness while minimizing required sample sizes. We quantify the fairness-efficiency trade-off and derive the exact sample complexity for the proposed F-CTSD algorithm under its fairness constraints. We further theoretically prove that the proposed F-CTSD algorithm consistently produces accurate treatment effect estimates even under fairness requirements, enhancing statistical reliability. Numerical experiments show that the proposed F-CTSD algorithm outperforms existing methods, achieving higher sample efficiency while reducing subgroup fairness violations by 4.95%.

A Compute Center Anyone Can Join: A Peer-to-Peer System for AI Inference

Yimo Lin, Zhen Zhang

原文摘要

Today, most people obtain AI inference by buying it from a small number of organizations that run large data centers, while many GPUs owned by individuals and small institutions sit idle for much of the day. Bitcoin showed that strangers can contribute resources under shared rules and receive checkable rewards, but it relies on an asymmetry: proof-of-work is expensive to produce and cheap to verify. Useful inference has no such asymmetry. We propose the Open Inference Market (OIM), which replaces the missing asymmetry with an economic mechanism. A worker delivers a result without knowing whether it will be audited; its unsettled earnings serve as collateral during a challenge window; and confirmed cheating forfeits all of it. We call this principle earnings as collateral. In a simplified model we show three things. The number of audits needed for deterrence is a constant per worker per day, independent of the worker's throughput, so the audited share falls as the network gets busier. A new worker can join with a short period of intensive auditing and a very small bond. And whether the mechanism works at all depends only on the ratio of the audit judge's false-flag rate to its detection rate. Under example parameters, about 0.3 replays per worker per day are enough to make cheating unprofitable for a rational worker. On this basis we lay out a path that hands four powers back to participants one at a time: owning compute, writing history, judging work, and releasing value. A compute center need not be a building; it can be a protocol that anyone can join.

Quantizing Recurrent Language Models Is Easier Than You Think

Philipp Nazari, Neehal Tumma, Daniela Rus, T. Konstantin Rusch

原文摘要

Linear recurrences are becoming an increasingly common building block in large language models, replacing the growing KV cache of softmax attention with a fixed-size recurrent state that enables efficient decoding. However, the quantization stack has largely been developed around softmax Transformers, whose numerical properties and inference state differ from those of recurrent models. Our goal is to understand these differences and study the design space of quantization methods for recurrent models. In our analysis, we differentiate between two targets. First, extra-state quantization concerns weights and activations outside the recurrent state, whose distributions are shaped indirectly by the sequence mixer during training. In controlled 1.3B parameter models, we find that decayed recurrences develop weaker residual outlier channels than softmax attention and are therefore easier to quantize without incoherence processing. Second, intra-state quantization concerns the recurrent state itself during decode, where repeated updates create a different numerical problem from KV cache quantization. We instantiate our findings as LoReS, a state quantization pipeline combining value-axis scale grouping to match output channel magnitude, decay-based mixed-precision to protect slowly decaying heads or channels, and stochastic rounding to limit error accumulation under repeated requantization. Across Qwen-3.5 9B, Nemotron-H 8B, and Kimi-Linear 48B-A3B, LoReS supports robust 8-bit state quantization and lower effective precision on shorter decode horizons. We implement LoReS in vLLM and demonstrate end-to-end decode speedups.

Low-Dimensional Adaptation of Rectified Flow: A Diffusion and Stochastic Localization Perspective

Saptarshi Roy, Alessandro Rinaldo, Purnamrita Sarkar

原文摘要

In recent years, Rectified flow (RF) has gained considerable popularity largely due to its generation efficiency and state-of-the-art performance. In this paper, we investigate how well RF automatically adapts to the intrinsic low dimensionality of the support of the target distribution to accelerate sampling. We show that, using a carefully designed \blue{end-point adapted} time-discretization scheme and with sufficiently accurate drift estimates, the RF sampler enjoys an iteration complexity of order $O(k/\varepsilon)$ (up to log factors), where $\varepsilon$ is the precision in total variation distance and $k$ is the intrinsic dimension of the target distribution. In addition, we show that the denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) procedure is equivalent to a stochastic version of RF by establishing a novel connection between these processes and stochastic localization. Building on this connection, we further design a stochastic RF sampler that also adapts to the low-dimensionality of the target distribution under mild requirements on the accuracy of the drift estimates, and also with a specific time schedule. We illustrate the efficacy of newly designed time-discretization schedules with simulations on the synthetic data and text-to-image (T2I) data experiments.

ReLATE: Learning Relative Representations for Post-Hoc Multimodal Alignment

Shiwon Kim, JaeSeong Hong, Yu Rang Park

原文摘要

Post-hoc multimodal alignment connects independently pretrained vision and language encoders while keeping them frozen, offering an alternative to joint pretraining when paired data are scarce. A central design challenge is to construct comparable representations across heterogeneous feature spaces while retaining local information relevant to distinct semantic concepts within each input. We propose Relative Alignment with Learnable Anchors and Token Evidence (ReLATE), which learns modality-specific anchors that jointly define relative representations and determine token contributions to each relative coordinate. Image patches and text tokens are represented by their similarities to anchors within their respective frozen feature spaces. Anchor-wise Similarity Pooling (ASP) then weights and aggregates these similarities separately for each anchor to construct the corresponding relative coordinate. A sample-level symmetric contrastive objective aligns the resulting image and text representations by optimizing only the anchors, without updating the encoders. Experiments on 13 general-domain benchmarks across four vision-language tasks demonstrate improvements over the compared post-hoc alignment methods under matched paired-data budgets, with further evaluations across data scales and encoder combinations. Beyond the general domain, we evaluate ReLATE in pathology as a specialized-domain application. By aligning frozen pathology image and biomedical language encoders, ReLATE matches or exceeds the evaluated pathology-specific vision-language models in balanced accuracy on three zero-shot classification benchmarks.

Privacy-Preserving ECG-HRV Emotion Classification for Mood Swing Detection using Federated Learning on Constrained Edge Devices

Chidike Vincent, Muhammad Aslam Jarwar, Najam Ul Hasan, Laurence Hirsch, Jonathan Zasada-James, Hem Raj Dadra

原文摘要

This paper presents a privacy-preserving mood monitoring framework that classifies emotional states from ECG-derived heart rate variability (HRV) features. The framework is evaluated on three public datasets comprising 74 participants and further validated using a wearable device in a pilot study. Leave-One-Participant-Out cross-validation (LOPO-CV) is used to assess generalization to unseen individuals. A series of experiments investigates the impact of temporal windowing, HRV feature selection, and class balancing on both four-class valence-arousal and binary valence classification. Results show that class balancing substantially improves minority-class recall, while Logistic Regression consistently outperforms five alternative classifiers and achieves competitive performance against HRV-based baselines. Pilot validation using a Polar H10 wearable achieves 75% binary valence accuracy on an unseen individual without calibration, demonstrating the feasibility of real-world deployment. To preserve privacy, the framework is also implemented using federated learning on a six-node Raspberry Pi cluster. Federated Logistic Regression achieves performance comparable to centralized training without sharing raw physiological data. These results demonstrate the potential of interpretable and privacy-preserving mood monitoring for continuous mental health assessment in clinical and community settings.

Robust Filter Attention: Self-Attention as Precision-Weighted State Estimation

Peter Racioppo

原文摘要

We introduce Robust Filter Attention (RFA), a formulation of self-attention as a robust state estimator. Each token is treated as a noisy observation of a latent trajectory governed by a linear stochastic differential equation (SDE), and attention weights are determined by consistency under this model rather than static feature similarity. Under isotropic noise and decay assumptions, RFA matches the computational complexity of standard attention. On language modeling benchmarks, RFA matches or improves on RoPE's perplexity within the training window while remaining stable under zero-shot extrapolation to longer contexts, where RoPE degrades sharply. The framework also provides a dynamical interpretation of standard positional mechanisms, connecting rotational embeddings and recency biases to transport and uncertainty propagation induced by dynamics.

FADE: A Flow-Based Approach for Multichannel Tail Estimation

Parmida Valiahdi, Niloofar Mehrnia, Mustafa Furkan Beker, Ubeydullah Erdemir, Ibrahim Hokelek, Sinem Coleri

原文摘要

Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) is vulnerable to rare low-received-power events, and the spatial-diversity benefits of multiple receivers can be significantly reduced when they experience simultaneous deep fading. Multivariate Extreme Value Theory (MEVT) provides a principled framework for characterizing such joint tail behavior. However, conventional MEVT methods often rely on restrictive parametric assumptions or discrete representations of the dependence structure, which may not fully capture complex multivariate tail behavior. This paper proposes Flow-based Angular Density Estimation (FADE), a flow-based approach for characterizing the dependence between extreme events across receivers within the MEVT framework. FADE transforms multivariate extremes into a standard extreme-value representation and uses a flow-based density estimator to learn the dependence structure from the transformed data without imposing a predefined parametric form. The proposed framework is evaluated using experimentally collected data from a UAV communication system, in which the UAV serves as the transmitter and communicates with two ground receivers. FADE provides closer agreement with the empirical joint CDF, achieving reductions of up to 22.4% in MAE compared with the state-of-the-art Logistic and Maximum Empirical Likelihood (MEL) methods, while also improving distributional agreement and reducing absolute bias.

PerNodeDrop: A Method Balancing Specialized Subnets and Regularization in Deep Neural Networks

Gelesh G. Omathil

原文摘要

Deep neural networks possess strong representational capacity yet remain vulnerable to overfitting, primarily because neurons tend to co-adapt in ways that, while capturing complex and fine-grained feature interactions, also reinforce spurious and non-generalizable patterns that inflate training performance but reduce reliability on unseen data. Noise-based regularizers such as Dropout and DropConnect address this issue by injecting stochastic perturbations during training, but the noise they apply is typically uniform across a layer or across a batch of samples, which can suppress both harmful and beneficial co-adaptation. This work introduces PerNodeDrop, a lightweight stochastic regularization method. It applies per-sample, per-node perturbations to break the uniformity of the noise injected by existing techniques, thereby allowing each node to experience input-specific variability. Hence, PerNodeDrop preserves useful co-adaptation while applying regularization. This narrows the gap between training and validation performance and improves reliability on unseen data, as evident from the experiments. Although superficially similar to DropConnect, PerNodeDrop operates at the sample level. It drops weights at the sample level, not the batch level. An expected-loss analysis formalizes how its perturbations attenuate excessive co-adaptation while retaining predictive interactions. Empirical evaluations on vision, text, and audio benchmarks indicate improved generalization relative to the standard noise-based regularizer.

Learning to read residual images for single-pixel photography

Hongjun An, Shuaizhe An, Tong Tian, Zhe Sun

原文摘要

Continuous video scales in cost with camera count, resolution and recording duration, yet many monitoring tasks seek events rather than complete images and can operate on a compact single-pixel measurement stream. Recovering a chosen interval as video is then desirable, but at 0.24\% of the pixel count the scene correlation image looks like noise and per-clip optimization takes minutes. Correlating the residual of an estimate with the coding patterns nevertheless gives a residual image, the gradient of a centered measurement loss. Lifted through a pretrained video decoder, its agreement with the true error exceeds that of control decoders. Video-latent inversion (VLI) then outperforms frame-wise image-latent reconstruction at 1{,}000 bucket values. Measurement-Gradient-Conditioned Video Flow (MGV-Flow), trained once to read the lifted residual image with preceding frames, reconstructs five frames in 1.55\,s at 22.9\,dB median PSNR, against 398\,s and 18.1\,dB for VLI, with the largest gains in high-motion scenes. Directional fidelity ranks 30 coding configurations and selects one needing a third fewer bucket values. On a physical system, MGV-Flow outperforms per-frame reconstruction without retraining. A sliding window over the bucket-value stream yields 3.2 frames per second on one RTX~4090 and, in theory, 20 frames per second on a data-centre accelerator. Demonstrations are available at https://cavedweller509.github.io/MGV-Flow.

MEX: The Musical Expectation Benchmark Suite

Mathias Rose Bjare, Augustin Bouquillard, Giorgia Cantisani, Seung-Goo Kim, Stefan Lattner, Gerhard Widmer

原文摘要

We propose the Musical Expectation (MEX) benchmark suite for perceptually validating computational models of musical expectation, i.e., models that estimate music information dynamics (MID) measures of perceived musical expectations, such as surprisal or uncertainty from symbolic music or musical audio. MEX collects and extends tasks for evaluating such models previously proposed in music information retrieval and cognitive sciences using standard datasets, and evaluates whether: (1) proposed MID measures decrease with repetition due to in-context learning of the computational model, (2) peaks in such measures align with boundaries of music segments, (3) pitch surprisal and uncertainty estimated from audio are consistent with those modeled in event-based symbolic music, (4) proposed MID measures can predict electrophysiological responses to music. We stress that this benchmark suite does not provide an exhaustive computational characterization of music expectation. Rather, we envision this as an active, interdisciplinary initiative, with benchmarks evolving as our understanding of the underlying perceptual processes deepens. We provide open-access code https://github.com/musicperceptmodeling/mex to estimate surprisal and uncertainty from audio using baseline models, run the tasks on standard datasets, and include utilities for running the tasks with users' own data.

Self-Evolving Agentic Workflows via Semantic Decomposition of Complex Tasks

Zichuan Fu, Junjia Qi, Xian Wu, Wenlin Zhang, Yimin Deng, Kaifeng Guo, Xiangyu Zhao

原文摘要

Agentic workflows organize complex tasks into reusable procedures. However, invoking an LLM at every step incurs repeated inference costs and delays. We propose a framework for self-evolving agentic workflows through semantic task decomposition. Each subtask has explicit applicability conditions and a procedure that executes code or invokes a model as needed. An agent uses execution feedback to refine the decomposition and update these procedures. Experiments in the GLEE competition show the framework on bargaining, negotiation and persuasion. Most observed final-decision procedures are implemented in code. Code is available at https://github.com/Applied-Machine-Learning-Lab/NeurIPS2026_SeaFlow.

NEIGHBOR: Aligning Service Behaviour and Evidence Use in an LLM Agent for Community Resident Services

Zongyou Yang, Yinghan Hou, Xiaokun Yang

原文摘要

Residents who contact a community service desk about a repair or a service charge need answers they can act on, with facts that hold for their case and commitments the desk can keep. In tool-augmented LLM agents, such facts come from documents and records, and the conduct of a service answer is usually specified in a system prompt. We present NEIGHBOR, an LLM agent for community resident services that trains this conduct into the model that drives its tools. NEIGHBOR is deployed on a live resident-service platform for a district of an East Asian city of more than ten million people. It adapts Qwen3-235B-A22B with LoRA on 7,824 supervised fine-tuning examples built from public community-service materials around six service-behaviour targets, among them commitment control and human referral, and the adapted model plans document retrieval and read-only text-to-SQL over the resident's own records. In an offline evaluation with seven configurations, an independent domain expert rated all 350 answers to 50 stratified held-out queries. NEIGHBOR scores 7.74/10 against 5.86 for the same agent running the un-tuned model (+1.88; paired Wilcoxon $p<10^{-8}$; higher on 46 of 50 queries) and improves all six rated dimensions. No tool-augmented answer received a red-line flag (standalone models: 8-14% of answers). An LLM judge ranks the seven configurations much as the expert does (Spearman $ρ=0.93$). Its rubric counts specifics absent from the reference answer as fabricated, so it scores tool-grounded answers 1-2 points lower, enough to change which configuration ranks first. For resident-facing agents, service behaviour is a practical fine-tuning target that raises expert-rated answer quality with the tools held fixed.

LegoEnv: Self-Evolving Agentic Environments via Modular Recombination

原文摘要

LLM agents learn by interacting with environments, yet existing environments are designed for specific tasks and fail to generalize to new ones. Recent methods automate environment construction with LLMs. However, they generate each environment from scratch, neither reusing parts shared across environments nor carrying a fix from one environment to the rest. To address this, we propose a new paradigm of evolving environment atoms, which composes environments from reusable atoms (intent, rule, data and server) and evolves the atoms when an environment fails to give reliable feedback (e.g., an application lacks a tool the task requires). To instantiate this paradigm, we introduce LegoEnv, which builds 5,465 verified environments over 223 applications, and one round of evolution raises the share of solvable environments from 71.6% to 88.3%. On AutomationBench, SFT on these environments lifts Qwen3.6-27B from 16.0% to 32.0%, and RL with their verifiers lifts Qwen3.8-27B from 37.6% to 40.3%. Further analyses show steady gains with corpus size, transfer to unseen applications, and failures concentrated in a few shared root causes.

When Should LLMs Be Less Specific? Selective Abstraction for Reliable Long-Form Text Generation

Shani Goren, Ido Galil, Ran El-Yaniv

原文摘要

LLMs are widely used, yet they remain prone to factual errors that erode trust and limit adoption in high-risk settings. One approach to mitigate this risk is to equip models with uncertainty estimation mechanisms that abstain when confidence is low. However, this binary "all-or-nothing" approach is excessively restrictive in long-form settings, often discarding valuable information. We introduce Selective Abstraction (SA), a framework that enables LLMs to trade specificity for reliability by selectively reducing the detail of uncertain content. We formalize SA through selective risk and coverage, and propose Atom-wise Selective Abstraction, a claim-level instantiation that decomposes responses into atomic claims and replaces uncertain atoms with higher-confidence, less specific abstractions. We develop a novel end-to-end pipeline for evaluating long-form generation that instantiates risk as factual correctness and measures coverage as retained information. Our comprehensive empirical evaluation across five LLMs and two long-form factual benchmarks shows that atom-wise SA consistently improves the risk-coverage trade-off, outperforming seven baselines, including claim removal, self-revision, sampling-based aggregation, and chain-of-verification. It improves AURC by up to 35.61% over claim removal, demonstrating that reducing specificity boosts reliability while preserving substantial information. We further provide a risk-guided procedure for selecting a confidence threshold that satisfies a target risk.

Reinforcement Learning with Markov Risk Measures and Multipattern Risk Approximation

Andrzej Ruszczynski, Tiangang Zhang

原文摘要

For a risk-averse finite-horizon Markov Decision Process, we introduce a special class of Markov coherent risk measures, called mini-batch measures. We also define the class of multipattern risk-averse problems that reduce to linear MDPs in the risk-neutral case. We use both concepts in a feature-based $Q$-learning method with multipattern $Q$-factor approximation and we prove a high-probability regret bound of $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}\big(d^{3/2}HN^{H-1}\sqrt{K}\big)$, where $d$ is the number of features, $H$ is the horizon, $N\ge2$ is the mini-batch size, $K$ is the number of episodes, and $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}$ hides logarithmic factors. We also propose an economical version of the $Q$-learning method that streamlines the policy evaluation (backward) step. The theoretical results are illustrated on a stochastic assignment problem and a short-horizon multi-armed bandit problem.

CoGSeq-LTV: Scalable Missing-Aware Graph-Sequence Modeling for Multi-Business Transaction Analytics

Ziyang Su, Yao Zhou, Kelin Liu, Guanjie Zheng, Linghe Kong

原文摘要

Large-scale super-apps generate heterogeneous transaction logs in which users interact with multiple businesses, item identifiers are only partially available, and future value targets are sparse, heavy-tailed, and cumulative over time. We study multi-business, multi-horizon value prediction as a data-intensive analytics problem over such logs, rather than as a single-table task. (i) a batch-induced user-item graph that provides collaborative signals without materializing a global graph and remains applicable when item identifiers are missing through reserved unknown-item handling, (ii) business-aware sequence encoders that preserve recency, inter-event gaps, payment context, and goods-table availability, and (iii) cross-view contrastive alignment that transfers user-level intent across businesses while retaining business-specific temporal patterns. To handle zero-inflated and long-tailed cumulative targets, CoGSeq-LTV adopts a zero-inflated mixture log-normal head with MAE-aligned point supervision and validation-calibrated zero-aware inference. Experiments on the BiBiSheng transaction-log dataset show that CoGSeq-LTV improves over representative LTV baselines across businesses and horizons, including under a later out-of-time evaluation window.

Control Barrier Functions for Safety-Aware Latent-Space Motion Planning

Chandrakiran Ravula, Siddhanth Ramesh

原文摘要

Latent-space path planning (LSPP) compresses the configuration space of a robotic manipulator into a compact, differentiable manifold learned by a variational autoencoder, enabling fast gradient-based planning without explicit inverse kinematics. Existing LSPP frameworks enforce obstacle avoidance with a binary collision classifier, whose saturated gradients near obstacle boundaries and lack of temporal structure cause the optimizer to stall and provide no forward-invariance guarantee. We replace the classifier with a neural control barrier function (CBF) learned directly in the latent space. The barrier is trained with a three-term objective that combines safe and unsafe sign constraints with a discrete-time decrease condition evaluated on transitions of an obstacle-blind nominal planner, and it is enforced at planning time by a closed-form, first-order correction that projects each goal-directed latent step back onto the CBF constraint. On a 7-DoF Franka Panda manipulator, the CBF planner achieves a 75.6\% success rate on a fixed-obstacle task, 12.0 percentage points above the best of 35 tuned classifier configurations, and 83.8\% on a multi-position task. A sweep of the decay rate $α$ characterizes the safety--performance trade-off, with the best operating points in $α\in [0.10, 0.20]$. In a fully general random-obstacle setting, success drops to 33.0\%, which we trace to covariate shift between the obstacle-blind training transitions and the states visited by the corrected planner.

DualClusterNet: Personalized Pattern-Space Composition for Next-POI Recommendation

Ziyang Su, Guanjie Zheng, Jilin Hu, Linghe Kong

原文摘要

Next point-of-interest (POI) recommendation supports personalized place discovery on location-based Web platforms. Mobility routines can recur across users while being realized at different places and adapted to individual preferences. We present DualClusterNet, a causal sequential recommender that composes two population-shared prototype dictionaries. At each observed prefix, soft routers retrieve pattern and spatial mixtures; a factorized multiplicative interaction couples them, feature-wise affine modulation adapts the shared representation, and a separate user-conditioned branch with an additive--projective gate retains individual variation. The prediction head combines this representation with a learned first-order transition term and ranks the complete training POI vocabulary. We evaluate on NYC and TKY using a training-only vocabulary and an original-final-target protocol that neither bridges unknown POIs nor substitutes earlier targets. The available single-seed results show competitive full-candidate ranking, while controlled analyses support the contribution of the compositional and personalized branches. Routing Subspaces: Auditing Evaluation-to-Deployment Mismatch in Fine-Tuned Language Models

Phongsakon Mark Konrad, Toygar Tanyel, Serkan Ayvaz

原文摘要

Safety evaluations often assume that behavior observed during testing reflects behavior in ordinary use, but fine-tuning can break this assumption. A checkpoint can appear fixed under evaluation-style prompts while the same behavior persists under ordinary-use prompts. Output scores reveal this mismatch but do not locate it. We investigate whether the distinction is encoded in a stable internal site and introduce an audit that fits a paired activation contrast at a path-patching-informed mid-depth window, then modifies the resulting coordinate on held-out prompts. The intervention reduces the evaluation-to-deployment gap by more than $0.12$ in ten of twelve model--behavior settings and closes it (post-intervention gap below $0.06$) in four, across four full-matrix instruction-tuned model instances; among the eight settings with $n{\geq}120$ paired questions, six reduce and one closes. A fifth model supports localization and edit-provenance checks, and in the twelve settings deployment-framed rates change by at most $6.1$pp. On retrained checkpoints, random directions at the same dose do not reproduce the effect, and off-window controls do so only in part. The strongest literal evidence for an evaluation-versus-deployment distinction comes from sandbagging, whose prompt framing is explicitly evaluative; sycophancy and refusal test framing-contingent task distinctions. The two weak cells, both sycophancy, show where a single-coordinate audit at a fixed window is not sufficient. The audit is a non-adaptive, white-box diagnostic for controlled fine-tuned checkpoints, not a training-time defense, a guarantee of deployment safety, or evidence about naturally arising failures.

Large skill libraries are now standard equipment for LLM agents, and which subset reaches the prompt decides what the agent can do. Enumeration and top-$K$ embedding retrieval both treat skills as independent documents, assuming relevance is a property of one skill at a time. It is not: skills depend on, conflict with, specialize, and duplicate one another, so the closest match to a task can name it while omitting a prerequisite it needs. Graph retrieval encodes these relations but spends them in a fixed pipeline, handing the agent an opaque bundle. We present SkillDAG, which exposes a typed skill graph to the LLM as an agent-callable interface rather than consuming it for the agent: search returns vector matches, typed-edge neighbors, and conflict signals, and a propose-then-commit protocol lets it register execution-backed edges as it works. Across two benchmarks and three model families, SkillDAG outperforms full-library prompting, vector retrieval, and Graph-of-Skills, gaining +14.3 points of ALFWorld success and tying only at ceiling; its ranking holds flat across a $10\times$ pool expansion that degrades the fixed pipeline. Inter-skill structure, these results suggest, is worth more to an agent that can query and revise it than to a retriever that consumes it.

Acceptance Cards:A Four-Diagnostic Standard for Safe Fine-Tuning Defense Claims

Phongsakon Mark Konrad, Toygar Tanyel, Serkan Ayvaz

原文摘要

Safe fine-tuning defenses are often endorsed on the basis of a held-out gap reduction, but the same reduction can come from sampling noise, subject artifacts, capability loss, or a mechanism that does not transfer. We introduce Acceptance Cards: an evaluation protocol, a documentation object, an executable audit package, and a claim-specific evidential standard for safe fine-tuning defense claims. The protocol checks statistical reliability, fresh semantic generalization, mechanism alignment, and cross-task transfer before treating a gap reduction as a full-card pass. Re-scored under this installed-gap protocol, SafeLoRA fails the full-card pass on Gemma-2-2B-it: under strict mechanism-class coding it fails all four diagnostics, and under a permissive shrinkage relabel it still fails three of four. This is a narrow installed-gap audit on one model family, not a global judgment of SafeLoRA's effectiveness. In a 46-cell audit, no cell satisfies the strict conjunction. The closest family is a near miss that passes reliability and mechanism checks where the required data are available, but fails the fresh-subject threshold, lacks a strict transfer pass, and carries a measurable deployment-accuracy cost.

原文摘要

LLM-based role-playing agents are fluent at imitating a character's style, yet struggle to make role-consistent decisions over long narrative horizons. Such decisions are shaped by experiences spanning many prior scenes, which are often partial and may point in different directions. Existing methods inject cross-scene memories as context, but do not reason about how past events shape a character's current motivations and behavior. We propose MemRole, a framework that makes this memory-to-decision process explicit. It introduces Long-Horizon Memory Thinking (LHMT), a reasoning schema that decomposes hidden reasoning into context understanding, memory activation, and response strategy planning, trained on a novel-derived dataset whose character-grounded, timeline-constrained memory pools limit each character to what it could plausibly know at the current narrative point. Beyond supervised fine-tuning, we propose Self-Refining On-Policy Self-Distillation (SR-OPSD): the model critiques its own rollouts against the reference under a data-driven rubric, and a critique-conditioned teacher view of the same model distills token-level guidance back into the policy. MemRole-32B improves over its backbone by 15.2 points on memory-grounded role-playing, performs on par with frontier LLMs such as GPT-5.4, and achieves the best character-motivation recognition accuracy on CroSS-MR.

Silent Reward and Environment Defects in EV Charging Simulation Benchmarks: A Diagnostic Checklist

Nour-Eddine Moumni, Rachid Alaoui, Driss Kiouach

原文摘要

Reinforcement-learning (RL) benchmarks built on microscopic traffic simulators such as SUMO are increasingly used to compare agent architectures for electric vehicle (EV) charging assignment. Unlike crashes, defects in the reward function, the environment's stochastic model, or the state encoding often fail silently: the simulation completes, produces plausible numbers, and the comparison is biased. We report five such defects, found by auditing a five-agent benchmark on OpenStreetMap road networks, stated generically: a shared random generator that desynchronises seed-paired comparisons, an ablation-specific reward clip applied unconditionally, a normalisation mismatch that zeroes a reward term, a per-timestep penalty that should fire once per event, and a state dimensionality documented but never wired into the network. We quantify three: a rejection counter inflated up to 125x across agents/cities, a reward term bounded at about $10^{-4}$ of its intended scale, and a 16.6%/16.3% greedy-action divergence from a state-encoding mismatch. Re-analysing a historical ablation, no A1-A2 effect survives family-wise correction; a 56-run campaign confirms the RNG defect's mechanism directly while showing its correction does not change that conclusion. We provide an eight-item checklist as a low-cost first-pass audit; in a later regeneration, three checks caught two new defects while three further process/artefact defects fell outside its boundary.

Encode Once, Answer Many: Internalizing Context via Parametric Flow

原文摘要

Large language models are typically adapted to a task either by placing knowledge in the input context, which keeps it external and re-encodes it on every call, or by fine-tuning, which internalizes it but demands a costly round of optimization per task. We aim to internalize the knowledge carried by a context directly into model parameters, without per-task optimization and without keeping the context in the input at inference time. To this end, we propose CLIK, a context-conditioned parameter generator that maps a given context to LoRA parameters for internalizing knowledge in a single forward pass through a Transformer encoder with cross-attention, requiring no test-time gradient updates. Once the generated LoRA is inserted into a frozen base model, the model answers downstream queries from the query alone, having internalized the context into its weights rather than re-reading it. Because the adapter depends only on the context, it is generated once and reused for every query on the same document, so the cost of reading that document is amortized across queries. On document question answering, CLIK substantially improves over the no-context base model and outperforms existing hypernetwork-based generators, while remaining behind a base model that reads the context directly, and it carries over to multi-turn dialogue without any multi-turn-specific training. Analysis further shows that the context-dependent part of the generated adapter concentrates in a compact and specific substructure.

Teacher-Aware Evolution of Heuristic Programs from Learned Optimization Policies

原文摘要

LLM-based automatic heuristic design has shown promise for generating executable heuristics for combinatorial optimization, but existing methods mainly rely on delayed endpoint performance. We propose a \emph{teacher-aware evolutionary framework} that uses independently trained learned optimization policies as behavioral teachers. Instead of deploying or imitating the teacher, our method queries it on states visited by candidate heuristic programs and uses its action preferences as local feedback for evolution. The resulting search discovers static executable heuristics guided by both task performance and teacher-derived behavioral signals. Experiments on scheduling, routing, and graph optimization benchmarks show that our method improves over performance-driven LLM heuristic evolution baselines while requiring no neural inference at deployment. These results suggest that learned optimization policies can be repurposed as behavioral feedback sources for automatic heuristic discovery.

WISE-ATTA: When to Ask for Labels in Budgeted Active Test-Time Adaptation

Muhammad Huzaifa, Lea Schönherr, Thorsten Eisenhofer

原文摘要

Active test-time adaptation (ATTA) improves robustness under distribution shift by updating a deployed model during inference while selectively querying supervision. However, most existing ATTA methods implicitly assume that supervision can be requested for every incoming test batch, which can incur substantial annotation cost over long test streams. In this work, we introduce budgeted ATTA in which labels are available for only a fraction of test batches. This formulation shifts the central challenge from deciding what to label within a batch to deciding when supervision should be applied over time. To address this challenge, we propose a budget-aware approach WISE-ATTA that allocates supervision over the test stream based on lightweight signals computed online, prioritizing periods where supervision is likely to be most useful. When a batch is selected for supervision, we further employ a drift-based sample selection criterion that targets samples exhibiting ongoing, unconverged adaptation dynamics, enabling effective updates from a single labeled example. We evaluate this approach on synthetic corruptions (ImageNet-C) and natural distribution shifts (ImageNet-R/K/A). Across settings, WISE-ATTA achieves competitive or improved performance compared to recent ATTA methods while requiring substantially fewer labels. Overall, we find that the timing of supervision is a key, yet underexplored, aspect of active test-time adaptation. Code: https://github.com/Muhammad-Huzaifaa/WISE-ATTA

AI-Enabled Question-Answering for Chartered Accountancy: A Retrieval-Augmented Reasoning Framework

Jatin Gupta, Akhil Sharma, Saransh Singhania, Ali Imam Abidi

原文摘要

The inception of Large Language Models (LLMs) has catalyzed AI adoption in the finance sector, yet their reliability in complex, jurisdiction-specific tasks like Indian Chartered Accountancy (CA) remains limited. The models display difficulty in executing numerical tasks which require multiple steps while also needing advanced knowledge about legal regulations and the method of scaling their operations is not feasible in settings which have limited access to resources. We present CA-ThinkFlow as a parameter-efficient Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework which operates with a 14B, 4-bit-quantized reasoning model, 14B-DeepSeek-R1, and a layout-aware Docling extraction system which maintains document structure during extraction. CA-ThinkFlow uses a basic RAG method which automatically adds retrieved information into the prompt, while it depends on the model's built-in Chain-of-Thought (CoT) functions to create context and produce correct answers. The system we developed system operates at performance levels which match large proprietary models when we tested it on the multi-level CA-Ben benchmark, achieving Scholastic Reliability Coefficient (SRC) results which equal 68.75\% of GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. The framework shows high efficiency and strength in handling parameters, but essential reasoning abilities fail to process complex regulatory texts which exist in fields such as Taxation.
