Nearly-Optimal Time-Sample Trade-off in Consensus Dynamics

AI 速览:该论文研究同步 h-Majority 共识动力学中样本数 h 与达成共识所需时间之间的权衡,并给出近乎最优的上界与匹配下界。

How does the number of sampled opinions affect the time required to reach consensus in distributed consensus dynamics? We study the synchronous $h$-\textsf{Majority}, in which every node independently samples $h$ nodes uniformly at random with replacement in each round and adopts a most frequent sampled opinion, breaking ties uniformly at random. We show that $h$-\textsf{Majority} achieves the nearly-optimal trade-off between the sample size and the consensus time, among a broad class of consensus dynamics. In particular, we prove the following results. For every sample size $h \ge 3$ and for every initial configuration, we prove that the process reaches consensus with high probability within $\widetilde{O}\left(1+\min\left\{\frac{1}{\min\{h^2p_{\max},1\}},\frac{\sqrt{n}}{h}\right\}\right)$ rounds, where $n$ is the number of nodes and $p_{\max}$ is the largest initial fraction of nodes supporting any single opinion. This is the first bound on the consensus time for $h$-\textsf{Majority} that holds for every $h\ge3$ and every initial configuration. When the initially most popular opinion has a sufficiently large lead over every other opinion, we show that all nodes adopt this opinion with high probability within $O(\log n/\min\{h^2p_{\max},1\})$ rounds. We establish a matching lower bound up to polylogarithmic factors for any fixed update rule that treats all opinions symmetrically and that selects either a sampled opinion or the node's current opinion.

Power Adjusting Games Under Block-Dependent Pool Payout Schemes

AI 速览:该论文在 PPLNS、PROP 和 EXP 等实际部署的区块依赖支付方案下,分析 T-PAW 与 PAH 两类算力调整攻击的收益比,并指出 GRP 会误估这些攻击的收益。

Advanced power adjusting block withholding attacks such as PAW and T-PAW have been analyzed so far under a global-reset version of the proportional scheme (GRP), which is rarely used in practice. In this paper, we analyze T-PAW, which contains FAW and PAW as special cases, under the block-dependent payout schemes deployed in practice: Pay-Per-Last-N-Shares (PPLNS), round-based Proportional (PROP) and exponential-decay (EXP). We derive the revenue ratios analytically, by renewal arguments for PPLNS and through the stationary carry process of an open round for PROP and EXP. We further introduce Power Adjusting Hopping (PAH), where an adversary of any size adjusts its power allocation towards the pool according to the blockwork age of the round without withholding any block, and derive its revenue ratios under PROP and EXP. We show that GRP misestimates the T-PAW gain in a scheme-dependent direction: it overstates the gain under PROP up to an order of magnitude and understates it under EXP for the original slush decay rate. PROP is highly vulnerable to PAH, while EXP faces a trade-off: a slow decay invites PAH and a fast decay invites T-PAW. PPLNS is the least vulnerable scheme: it is immune to PAH and it mitigates, but does not eliminate, T-PAW. All analytical results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

AI 速览:回顾EGI在interTwin与iMagine项目中的早期AI实践,提出以AI就绪基础设施、人才技能与信任为三大支柱的2026-2030年AI战略。

The EGI Federation has provided federated e-infrastructure services to European and global science for over 15 years. We review EGI's early experiences with AI in the interTwin and iMagine Horizon Europe projects, which built digital twins in physics and environmental sciences and an image-analysis platform for aquatic research. We then examine how the AI landscape has changed since 2023 and argue that the focus of AI in science has shifted from model training to adapting and applying AI to specific domains, projects and questions. Building on these lessons, we present the AI strategy emerging from the EGI Federation Strategy 2026-2030, organised around three enablers: (1) an AI-ready infrastructure connecting compute, data and application resources across the continuum; (2) human skills to know what is possible with AI and how to implement it; and (3) trust, to run AI with confidence even in high-risk environments. We describe the projects implementing each enabler, including federated LLM inference, AI-ready data platforms and AI competence centres, and discuss a division of labour with EuroHPC's AI Factories, RAISE, research infrastructures and EOSC, in which EGI specialises in the customisation and long-term operation of AI for research.

The HiLumi LHC, the SKA Observatory and LOFAR 2.0 will take High Energy Physics (HEP) and Radio Astronomy (RA) towards exabyte-scale data within the next decade, beyond the capacity of today's infrastructure. The SPECTRUM project responded with two documents built on the same evidence. A Technical Blueprint describes a European compute and data continuum as a capability map, consolidates the gaps found in HEP, RA and related use cases, and recommends technical actions in eight areas. A Strategic Research, Innovation and Deployment Agenda (SRIDA) organises thirteen priorities in four pillars, maps them to investment areas and European funding instruments, and phases them over a roadmap set against the timelines of the three instruments. This paper, by editors and contributors of both documents, summarises them, their consultative method and the impact the SRIDA expects.

我们能否依赖语言模型在边缘-云连续体中进行服务编排?

Can We Rely on Language Models to Orchestrate Services across the Edge-Cloud Continuum?

AI 速览:系统综述39项研究,提出五维分析框架,考察语言模型在边缘-云连续体服务编排中的职责、权限、保障与证据。

Service orchestration across the edge--cloud continuum increasingly uses language models (LMs) to translate intents and operational evidence into scheduling, configuration, diagnosis, and remediation decisions. Yet, useful model outputs do not by themselves establish dependable orchestration: reliability also depends on where the LM enters the decision process, what authority it is granted, how actions are constrained, and what system-level evidence supports the claimed effect. Existing surveys provide limited synthesis of the links between continuum-specific orchestration decisions, LM responsibility, operational authority, assurance controls, and supporting empirical evidence. We systematically review 39 primary studies and develop a five-dimensional analytical framework for connecting system context, orchestration decisions, LM agency, operational safeguards, and evaluation evidence. The synthesis reveals predominantly hybrid designs in which LMs support interpretation, candidate generation, and mitigation planning, while downstream components commonly retain feasibility enforcement and execution authority. Bounded closed-loop remediation is emerging, but continuum-specific constraints remain unevenly represented in decision formulations, and production-scale evidence across heterogeneous edge--cloud environments remains limited. These findings suggest that reliance on LM-enabled orchestration depends on aligning decision constraints, operational authority, safeguards, and evaluation evidence with the claimed system effect.

Microservices are a dominant architecture in cloud computing, offering scalability and modularity, but also posing complex deployment challenges. As data centers contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, carbon-aware scheduling is a promising mitigation strategy. However, most existing solutions target batch, HPC, or serverless workloads and assume global-scale infrastructure. Such an assumption does not hold for many regional small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with microservice applications, due to geographic, cost, and data sovereignty constraints. In this paper, we present Aceso, an Adaptive Carbon- and Efficiency-aware placement for microservices that considers carbon, cost, and latency constraints. Aceso dynamically places microservices across geographically constrained regions using a scalable optimization with insight-based search space pruning techniques. Evaluation on a real-world deployment shows that Aceso adapts to real-time changes in workload and carbon intensity and reduces carbon emissions by up to 37.4% and operational cost by up to 3.36%, on average across days, compared to a static deployment within a single country, while maintaining the application's latency targets. In this way, Aceso enables carbon- and cost-aware microservice deployment for latency-sensitive applications in regionally limited infrastructures.

Research project 6G NeXt is considering true 3D holography as a use case, setting requirements on the communication as well as the computing infrastructure. In a future holographic communication service, clients are widely spread in the network and cooperatively interact with each other. Especially for holographic communication high processing power is required as well. This makes a high-speed distributed backbone computing infrastructure, which realizes the concept of split computing, inevitable. Furthermore, tight integration between processing facilities and wireless networks is required in order to provide an immersive user experience. This paper illustrates true 3D holographic communication and its requirements. Afterward, an appropriate solution approach is elaborated. Here, novel technological approaches are discussed based on a proposed overall communication and computing architecture.

Simple-IT: Practical Low-Latency Signature-Free BFT Consensus

Recent advances in quantum computing pose a looming threat to most current Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols, which rely on quantum-vulnerable public-key signature schemes such as Ed25519 and BLS12-381. Instead of switching to much more expensive post-quantum secure signature schemes, an alternative is to use signature-free protocols, which rely only on cheap, post-quantum secure authenticated channels. In this paper, we ask whether signature-free BFT consensus protocols can match the performance of current state-of-the-art, quantum-vulnerable BFT consensus protocols. While previous work on the Sailfish++ protocol showed that state-of-the-art throughput is attainable signature-free, the question of latency is still open. Several recent signature-free protocols have low latency in theory, but they are all very intricate, and no practical implementation has so far been presented. In this work, we propose Simple-IT, a new leader-based, signature-free BFT consensus protocol that achieves a theoretical latency of 4 message delays (one more than the optimum), and only 3 on its optimistic path. Crucially, Simple-IT is simple enough to be amenable to implementation and to practical optimizations such as speculative pipelining, and, as we show experimentally in a geo-distributed testbed, it achieves both throughput and latency competitive with state-of-the-art quantum-vulnerable protocols.

LLM解码中功耗封顶的幻象:跨注意力架构的阶段感知能耗刻画

The Illusion of Power Capping in LLM Decode: A Phase-Aware Energy Characterisation Across Attention Architectures

Bole Ma, Ayesha Afzal, Jan Eitzinger, Gerhard Wellein

AI 速览:作者报告在NVIDIA H200上,功耗封顶对以HBM等待为主的LLM自回归解码阶段几乎无效,而锁定SM时钟可在几乎不损失吞吐的情况下回收最高32%的解码能耗。

Power capping is a common GPU energy lever in LLM serving, and it appears to work: the cap is set, the GPU reports drawing less than it, and the energy budget is met. We show the cap does little for the phase that dominates LLM serving: autoregressive decode. Across four attention paradigms (GQA, MLA, Gated DeltaNet, and Mamba2) on an NVIDIA H200 under vLLM eager execution, decode kernels wait on HBM and the GPU idles between kernel launches, so decode draws less than half of the GPU's 700W rating and throughput stays within a few percent under every cap we set. The cap engages only when a large batch runs a long generation. Locking the SM clock instead lowers power without slowing memory-bound decode and recovers up to 32% of decode energy at minimal throughput loss. We identify three architecture-dependent frequency-scaling classes and find that, once prefill is measured without prefix caching, the recurrent architectures pay no prefill penalty: their linear-time mixing undercuts quadratic attention on long prompts, so their efficient decode adds to the prefill saving and lowers total request energy from the first output token at large batch.

只有被接受的 token 才算数:延迟目标下投机解码的能量核算

Only Accepted Tokens Count: An Energy Accounting of Speculative Decoding Under Latency Targets

Bole Ma, Ayesha Afzal, Jan Eitzinger, Harald Koestler, Gerhard Wellein

AI 速览:在生产级服务条件下测量投机解码的能耗,发现其节能取决于被接受 token 的比例,且随批大小增大而缩小,甚至可能变为耗能。

Large language model serving is limited by facility power. Energy per token determines how many tokens a datacenter can serve, while a latency target bounds how quickly each user receives them. During decode, every weight is read from memory for every generated token. Batching amortizes this read across users but makes no individual user faster. Speculative decoding does: a drafter proposes several future tokens, and the target model verifies them in a single forward pass that reuses the same weight read. Because every drafted token must be verified whether or not it is accepted, the energy speculation saves depends on how many drafted tokens are accepted. This saving is hard to pin down. It varies across target models from different attention families and across drafting schemes, and it depends on the text being served. Every drafter we evaluate accepts fewer tokens on conversation than on code, and every trained drafter accepts fewer on Romansh, a low-resource language, than on English. We measure speculative decoding under production serving conditions (SGLang, CUDA graphs enabled) on H100 and H200 GPUs, at batch sizes up to 64 across 5 corpora. On dense models, verification, not drafting, dominates the energy cost. The saving shrinks as the batch grows, because batching has already shared the weight read that speculation would divide among the accepted tokens. At large batch sizes, block drafters push verification past the balance point between arithmetic and memory traffic into the compute-bound regime, where the saving becomes a loss, and a drafter with low acceptance raises energy per token. Meeting a tighter latency target with speculation then costs additional energy. Larger batches lower energy per token without speculation. Speculation adds to that saving only when acceptance is high, and on the model we tested it leaves little headroom for latency-preserving DVFS.

Rocks, Pebbles and Sand: Modality-aware Scheduling for Multimodal Large Language Model Inference

Konstantinos Papaioannou, Thaleia Dimitra Doudali

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) power platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, enabling rich interactions across text, images, and videos. Unlike text-only workloads, multimodal requests are inherently heterogeneous, differing by orders of magnitude in latency and memory footprint. Existing LLM serving systems, designed for homogeneous text workloads, struggle under this heterogeneity: large image and video requests monopolize GPU resources, causing severe head-of-line blocking and degrading the responsiveness of lightweight, latency-critical text queries. Recent multimodal serving systems mitigate this interference through disaggregation, isolating encoding and inference stages across GPUs. While effective at large scale, such designs introduce severe GPU underutilization in more practical, moderate-scale deployments. In response, we build RPS-Serve a modality-aware scheduling framework that leverages the extreme heterogeneity in multimodal workloads and introduces a simple abstraction: videos behave like rocks, images like pebbles, and text like sand. Then, it lets sand flow quickly through pebbles and rocks, maximizing GPU utilization while ensuring fast responsiveness for lightweight requests and controlled execution for heavier ones. To achieve this, RPS-Serve estimates the GPU admission cost of each request, classifies requests into rocks, pebbles, and sand using lightweight clustering, and applies priority-based scheduling with aging to balance performance across modalities. Evaluation across state-of-the-art MLLMs shows that RPS-Serve increases GPU utilization by 65% and reduces TTFT by up to 9.3x, on average across models, compared to disaggregation-based multi-modal systems.

When Log Parsing Removes What Matters: Detecting Failures in Distributed GPU Workloads

Boyuan Cui, Yuyang Zeng, Yifang Tian, Hans-Arno Jacobsen

Large AI models increasingly rely on distributed GPU execution, yet it remains unclear whether established anomaly detection methods transfer effectively to this setting. We introduce GF-Bench, a PyTorch-based framework for generating controlled failures in distributed GPU workloads, and a dataset produced with it. The framework supports extensible workload and fault-injection logic; based on this design, the current release targets failures visible in multi-GPU communication logs and provides 220 labeled two-GPU runs covering normal behavior, CUDA out-of-memory fail-stop faults, and persistent-straggler fail-slow faults. Using GF-Bench, we evaluate three sequence-based methods (DeepLog, LogAnomaly, and LogBERT) and the large language model (LLM)-based LogPrompt with in-context learning (ICL) and chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting strategies on parsed logs, and additionally evaluate LogPrompt on raw logs. On parsed inputs, no method reliably detects both failure classes, and the highest overall F1 score is 0.667. Raw inputs raise the overall F1 score of ICL-LogPrompt to 0.983, at 9.0x its average input-token usage and 8.9x its per-run cost. These results reveal a trade-off between effectiveness and efficiency: parsed inputs reduce LLM token use and inference cost but can discard the distributed execution context required for accurate failure detection. GF-Bench provides a reproducible basis for studying cost-efficient anomaly detection methods and can be extended to additional GPU workloads and failure types.

PhOSv1: Efficient Scaling of Model Sleeping on a Single Server for Autoscaling with GPU-Context Deduplication

Tianle Sun, Xingda Wei, Rong Chen

Autoscaling is a key mechanism in model-as-a-service systems, where fast scale-up is essential because the scale-up time directly determines how long a model service remains overloaded, which in turn governs serving quality. The state-of-the-art approach, model sleeping, adopted by mainstream serving engines including vLLM and SGLang, achieves near-zero-cost scale-up by pausing pre-spawned engines on the GPU. However, sleeping is not a free lunch: each sleeping model must keep its GPU context resident, and this cost grows linearly with the number of models, degrading serving performance. Because providers must support many models, they face a dilemma between fast scale-up for all models and high service performance. In this paper, we show that a single server can keep many models asleep without paying this GPU context tax. The key observation is that the contexts of sleeping models are largely duplicated: the driver (CUDA) context can be shared across models, and their GPU kernel binaries overlap heavily due to common operators and libraries. PhOSv1 deduplicates this context by transparently delegating each engine's GPU context allocation to a central daemon through API remoting; therefore, a single server can keep far more models asleep than current engines allow. Our evaluation shows that PhOSv1 matches the scale-up time of vanilla vLLM sleep mode while substantially reducing the GPU memory footprint, improving end-to-end multi-model serving performance.

An Exact Parallel Dense Gauss-Seidel Algorithm with Trade-Offs between Parallel Execution Time and Preprocessing Time

Mugurel-Ionuţ Andreica, Pantelimon George Popescu, Eliana-Dina Tîrşa

The Gauss-Seidel iterative method is commonly used for solving systems of linear equations because of its good convergence properties. However, the Gauss-Seidel algorithm cannot be easily parallelized because of the data dependencies existing at each iteration. The best parallel execution time for dense systems of equations is $O(n)$ given that enough processors are available and no preprocessing is performed. In this paper we propose a new parallel Gauss-Seidel algorithm which is capable of achieving better parallel runtimes at the expense of more preprocessing time. The algorithm can be tuned in order to provide convenient trade-offs between the preprocessing time and the best parallel runtime achievable by the algorithm.

TRACEs: Fine-Grained Embedded Provenance for Distributed Scientific Workflows

Ty Anderson, Kin Ng, Rajiv Mayani, Jay Lofstead, Ewa Deelman, Michela Taufer

Large-scale scientific workflows run on distributed HPC resources, making it hard to explain how scientific data products are generated and why similar workflow executions can yield very different results. Existing systems usually focus on either distributed workflow execution or provenance management and rarely treat fine-grained provenance as an intrinsic property of distributed scientific data artifacts. We present TRACEs (Traceable Runtime for Advanced Containerized Executions), a provenance architecture for distributed containerized scientific workflows that embeds data lineage and execution context directly in every generated data artifact. By decoupling provenance from workflow orchestration, TRACEs generalizes artifact-centric provenance from local container runs to distributed workflows while remaining compatible with existing workflow management systems. We evaluate TRACEs on a seven-stage E. coli variant-calling workflow distributed across multiple HPC nodes. Our results show 100% provenance completeness under distributed execution, about 59% less intermediate storage via sparse IMG containers, and runtime and zero-copy I/O throughput comparable to fixed-size SIF containers, plus provenance-guided explanations of workflow variability that trace a 200-fold difference in variant counts to differences in input sequencing data without re-executing the workflow.

Speeding up Log-Sum-Exp: Kernel Fusion at the Memory Wall, Integer Arithmetic at the Compute Wall

Lingyun Yao, Martin Andraud, Niki Loppi, Andrea Pilzer, Anji Liu, Guy Van den Broeck, Martin Trapp

While the Log-Sum-Exp (LSE) function is a foundational numerical primitive for stable log-domain computation in modern machine learning, its fast and efficient computation on generic platforms (\ie, CPUs and GPUs) has been underexplored, potentially creating execution bottlenecks for large workloads. On GPU, the de facto implementation PyTorch logsumexp dispatches a chain of nine sub-kernels per call, incurring redundant High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) traffic and launch overhead. On CPU, exp and log operations are hardware-hungry, limiting the computing efficiency. To address these bottlenecks, we propose two drop-in kernels to significantly accelerate LSE computation on both GPUs and CPUs: FuseLSE, a single-pass fused kernel that evaluates LSE's exp and log functions on the GPU's Special Function Unit (SFU); and IntLSE, which further replaces the LSE computation with approximated integer arithmetic for CPU computation. Our experiments, validated by benchmarks across workload sizes and hardware platforms, show that both kernels are ${\sim}10-11\times$ faster than PyTorch at small workloads and ${\sim}6\times$ faster on larger ones on GPUs, where the speed-up is attributed to reduced launch overhead and HBM traffic. On CPU, where no SFU is available, LSE computation dominates the cost, allowing IntLSE to gain ${\sim}3-6\times$ execution speed over FuseLSE.

Enabling Dynamic Resource Scaling in Quantum Circuit Simulations

Íñigo Aréjula-Aísa, Sergio Iserte, Petter Sandås, Ricard S. Raigada-García, Oliver Brown, James Richings, Antonio J. Peña

Studies of quantum algorithms often simulate se- quences of circuits whose number of qubits changes from one circuit to the next, such as instances of increasing size of the same problem. Since each additional qubit doubles the state- vector, every circuit needs a different number of nodes, which a fixed allocation on a shared High-Performance Computing (HPC) system cannot provide: a job sized for the largest circuit leaves most of its nodes idle, and one job per circuit adds scheduler interactions and queue waits. We make the QuEST state-vector simulator malleable with the Dynamic Management of Resources (DMR) framework, so that a single job resizes between circuits. Because no state-vector exists between circuits, reconfigurations require no data redistribution and no changes to the simulation kernels, and a checkpoint holding the index of the next circuit is enough to resume. A right-sizing policy derives the number of nodes from the number of qubits, and the circuit_executor API hides reconfigurations from the user. We evaluate the reconfiguration overhead on MareNostrum 5 and show that a single job can run a batch of circuits of different sizes, adapting its allocation to each of them with negligible overhead.

CacheSolidarity: Preventing Prefix Caching Side Channels in Multi-Tenant LLM Serving Systems

Panagiotis Georgios Pennas, Konstantinos Papaioannou, Marco Guarnieri, Thaleia Dimitra Doudali

Large Language Models (LLMs) rely on optimizations like Automatic Prefix Caching (APC) to accelerate inference. APC works by reusing previously computed states for the beginning part of a request (prefix), when another request starts with the same text. While APC improves throughput, it introduces timing side channels: cache hits are faster than misses, creating observable latency differences. In multi-tenant systems, attackers can exploit these differences to infer sensitive information, e.g., by incrementally reconstructing another user's request by observing hit/miss patterns. Current defenses take a sledgehammer approach: they disable APC and cache sharing, isolating users, and sacrificing efficiency for regular users. This paper presents CacheSolidarity, a system that secures multi-tenant LLM serving systems against APC side channels without sacrificing performance and efficiency. CacheSolidarity monitors cache reuse across users, flags suspicious sharing, and selectively isolates prefixes, restricting their reuse only when necessary. Evaluation shows that CacheSolidarity enables up to 70% higher cache reuse and 30% lower inference latency compared to existing user-isolation defenses. CacheSolidarity's lightweight design demonstrates how LLM serving can be secured without sacrificing performance or incurring unbearable overheads.

Sandman: Building and Operating Sandboxes for Agentic Reinforcement Learning on Shared Kubernetes

Yiming Yan, Hongyang Wang, Wenbo Chen, Xuan Wang, Jingguo Liu, Xian Li, Chen Qi, Leo Fan 等 15 位作者

Agentic reinforcement learning (RL) often requires repeated tool calls in task-specific environments. A training job may create thousands of these environments in bursts while sharing a cluster with other jobs. We present Sandman, a sandbox service built and operated at Amazon for agent tool execution and evaluation. It serves multiple production agentic RL workloads on shared Kubernetes. A training framework supplies a task image and uses commands and file operations in the returned sandbox. Files and processes persist across calls until the framework releases the environment. Sandman manages creation, readiness and cleanup. Each sandbox is a Kubernetes pod with a small daemon mounted into the unmodified image. In a scale test, Sandman held 11,858 concurrent tiny sandboxes. Four production SWE-bench Verified training campaigns created 3.1 million sandboxes in October 2026. We report the design trade-offs and operational lessons from handling creation bursts, preparing task environments, reclaiming abandoned sandboxes, and running evaluation under controlled conditions. We will open-source Sandman's daemon, provider and pool.

SeQUeNCe.DQC: Full-stack Simulation of Distributed Quantum Computing

Sanjay Suresh, Caitao Zhan, Joaquin Chung, Rajkumar Kettimuthu

Distributed quantum computing (DQC) connects multiple quantum processing units to overcome the scale limits of monolithic hardware. We introduce SeQUeNCe.DQC, a new top-level module within the SeQUeNCe package that compiles monolithic circuits into topology-aware execution plans and coordinates their execution using SeQUeNCe's existing quantum-network modules and protocols. We validate SeQUeNCe.DQC by reproducing a two-node trapped-ion Grover experiment in simulation and comparing success probabilities with the reported 71% benchmark. We then evaluate how compiler strategy, topology, and memory capacity jointly govern distributed circuit execution time and success rate. In these experiments, our hybrid compilers successfully identified mixed TeleGate/TeleData execution plans that outperformed pure gate-teleportation strategies. By capturing the physical overhead of distributed quantum primitives, SeQUeNCe.DQC provides a rigorous platform for co-designing DQC software and hardware architectures.

Dobb: Shard-Local Preconditioning in Block-Diagonal Eigenbases

Shi-Yuk Fong, Shuhua Yu, Jiawei Zhang

Training language models whose parameters and optimizer state exceed a single node's memory requires sharding these tensors across devices. Under tensor parallelism (TP) or fully sharded data parallelism (FSDP), matrix-aware optimizers such as Muon introduce communication to perform global matrix operations across shards. We propose Dobb (Distributed Optimizer with Block-diagonal Eigenbases), a matrix-aware optimizer designed to compute updates locally within parameter shards. Dobb approximates the input-activation second moment with diagonal blocks and tracks a complete basis within each block. It projects momentum into these bases, applies sign normalization to the coefficients, and reconstructs the update. When each block lies within one shard under TP or FSDP, Dobb applies its matrix update locally, requiring no communication beyond data-parallel synchronization of the activation second moments. We benchmark Dobb against Dion, a distributed matrix-aware optimizer designed to retain the benefits of orthonormalized updates while reducing communication. On GPT-2 XL (1.56B parameters), Dobb with 16 blocks reaches a validation loss of 2.476, compared with 2.511 for Dion at rank fraction 1/16. Under FSDP on 32 H100 GPUs, Dobb reduces the amortized optimizer-call time from 124.1 ms for Dion to 9.2 ms.

Learning to Formulate: Agentic Hardware-Software Co-Design of AI Infrastructure through Progressive Optimization and Verification

Yi Ding, Li Shang

AI infrastructure, the chips and software that train and serve AI models, is designed in layers. Layers make the system manageable, but they also fix which choices an optimizer can consider. Gains that need the chip and its software to change together are excluded before optimization begins: the formulation leaves them out. Language-model agents make it possible to revisit these boundaries, but an agent's proposal cannot show by itself that a design is correct or optimal. We present Formulaic, a flow that divides the work. The agent writes the formulation, a mathematical solver optimizes within it, and verification and measurement check its assumptions and results. The agent refines the problem step by step, from the computation graph toward the chip. Each step is a template: a family of programs with the conditions under which they are correct. Wall relaxation searches the chip by pricing the hardware limits that bind the software. This paper takes a first step, through separate studies rather than one end-to-end run. On NVIDIA GB10, templates the agent wrote run complete Qwen3-8B layers $1.075\times$ faster than SGLang. In a simulated Ventus GPU study, joint design cuts the worst-scenario cycles of Qwen2.5-0.5B to 0.428 of the reference, against 0.934 for software alone. On a five-step GEMM refinement chain, reusing proofs makes checking $2.51\times$ faster.

More Is Better? Exploring Latent Correspondence in Federated Hypergraph Learning

Bo Yan, Siming Zhang, Siqi Li, Hang Yu

Federated hypergraph learning with latent cross-client hyperedge correspondence poses fundamental identifiability and computational challenges, as the same local release can correspond to multiple global hypergraph structures. We characterize the tractability of recovering these latent correspondences, showing tractable pairwise assignment but generally intractable multi-client hyperedge matching. Building on this characterization, we derive a cross-entropy decomposition that reveals when local prediction can outperform predictors fitted with additional cross-client information. Motivated by this principle, we introduce Federated Adaptive Spectral Training with Representation Alignment (FedASTRA), which learns correspondence-invariant diffusion representations through adaptive heat diffusion and masked latent prediction while communicating model parameters only. We establish its asymptotic optimality with respect to the permitted local information and prove global population-risk convergence under explicit conditions on recovery, representation, and update alignment. Experiments on eight real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of FedASTRA against identifier-free federated graph and hypergraph methods. On ogbn-papers100M, FedASTRA reaches the performance-communication Pareto frontier, achieving 50.07 Accuracy and 29.73 Macro-F1 while communicating only 59.60 MiB per round.

When Does Heterogeneity Pay Off? Understanding GPU-WSE System Complementarity

Ziyu Hu, Zhijing Ye, Jiamin Wang, Zhiqing Zhong, Zhendong Mi, Shaoyi Huang, Weijian Zheng, Rajkumar Kettimuthu 等 9 位作者

As AI accelerator architectures become increasingly diverse, integrating different architectures into a unified system is emerging as a new heterogeneous computing paradigm. GPUs and WSEs differ substantially in compute, memory, and communication organization, creating both architectural complementarity and additional overheads, yet how to translate this heterogeneity into practical performance gains remains unclear. To address this gap, we propose a hierarchical benchmarking methodology to characterize GPU--WSE heterogeneous execution and the conditions for exploiting complementarity, together with an analytical performance model that identifies when heterogeneity becomes a bottleneck and when it yields system-level performance gains.

PDScope: Breaking the Prefill-Decode Seesaw for Memory-Bound MoE Inference

Enda Yu, Dezun Dong, Zhaoning Zhang, Xiaojian Yang, Weiling Yang, Shaonan Ma, Dongsheng Li, Yongwei Wu 等 9 位作者

Local deployment of MoE-based LLMs on CPU-GPU nodes is attractive for cost and privacy reasons, yet limited GPU memory forces most experts into CPU memory. Prefill is then compute-bound and benefits from aggressive GPU loading, while decode is I/O-bound and requires conservative PCIe transfers. These demands cannot be amortized under low batching---typical of local assistants and document tools---forcing phase-agnostic schedulers into a seesaw: favoring prefill's aggressive loading injects unmaskable I/O that stalls decode, while favoring decode's conservative transfers starves prefill's GPU of work. We observe that expert routing is predictable in phase-specific ways, allowing us to decouple the two phases and optimize prediction, scheduling, and execution independently for each phase. PDScope predicts expert activations to guide placement and prefetching, adapts these policies to each phase's bottleneck via cross-layer cost modeling, and compiles decisions into overhead-free pipelines using a static computation graph, cache prefetching, and zero-copy asynchronous I/O. On mainstream MoE models, PDScope achieves 2.5-10.3x higher prefill throughput and 2.1-6.1x higher decode throughput than existing systems, showing that phase-aware co-design unlocks efficient MoE inference under memory constraints and extends naturally to multi-batch settings.

Solution-space heterogeneity shapes federated learning dynamics across partial differential equations

Ping Luo, Jiahuan Wang, Ziqing Wen, Kele Xu, Dongsheng Li, Tao Sun

In natural science applications, federated learning (FL) enables collaborative training of models that approximate solutions to partial differential equations (PDEs) for repeated use in distributed settings. However, the input conditions of FL-PDE training samples involve multiple coupled parameters, making data heterogeneity across clients difficult to analyse. We propose solution-space PDE-Dirichlet, which groups existing solution labels into task-specific bins and distributes samples using the classical Dirichlet allocation rule in FL, providing a common partitioning approach across PDE tasks. Theoretical analysis shows an association between differences in solution-bin composition and gradient disagreement, while experiments on three controlled operators and four public simulation datasets quantify the relationships between this heterogeneity, gradient disagreement and prediction error. Based on this connection, we develop Solution-Bin Controlled Federated Optimization, which uses pooled bin-gradient prototypes to correct the component of client gradients associated with bin composition while preserving the sample-weighted training objective. Experiments on low-viscosity Burgers and Darcy flow show that this correction reduces prediction error compared with federated averaging and narrows the gap from bin-balanced IID training.

DICE: Decentralized Incentive-driven Federated Learning for Efficient & Scalable Customization of Pretrained Models in Web3

Hong Lin, Zhongle Xie, Lidan Shou, Ke Chen, Gang Chen

Customizing Pretrained Models (PMs) for downstream tasks demands task-specific data, which burgeoning Web3 applications provide abundantly. Blockchain-powered federated learning (BCFL) offers a secure and privacy-preserving paradigm to customize PMs among self-interested and untrusted Web3 participants. Yet, existing BCFL algorithms face severe efficiency and scalability challenges when applied to large PMs, due to their substantial computational and memory requirements and the hardware constraints of many participants. This paper introduces DICE, a novel BCFL algorithm that addresses the efficiency and scalability challenges of customizing large PMs in Web3 via two sets of synergistic techniques: (i) a dynamic progressive learning scheme and a model slice verification scheme to enable a wider range of honest participants, including those unable to deploy the full model, to engage in customizing PMs, while preserving model utility; (ii) a tree-structured committee consensus protocol and an efficiency-driven incentive scheme to address the dominant bottleneck that hinders existing BCFL algorithms from scaling to a larger number of data holders for customizing data-hungry large PMs, while maintaining security. Theoretical analysis and extensive experimental results on customizing vision and language PMs demonstrate DICE's efficiency, effectiveness, and security.

Rank-Aware CPU Reservation and In-Place Adjustment for MPI CFD on Kubernetes

Tianfang Xie

Non-uniform meshes in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can leave some Message Passing Interface (MPI) ranks waiting while others determine execution time. On Kubernetes, reserving a full CPU for every rank can then restrict the admission of further simulations. We investigate rank-aware CPU reservation and in-place request adjustment using OpenFOAM on three Kubernetes testbeds. The framework lowers reservations without hard CPU caps and uses online MPI profiles to adjust each rank's CPU request while the solver runs. We reduced the per-job CPU reservation from 16.0 to 5.9 vCPU, with single-job wall-clock time increasing by at most 6%. With these reservations on twelve nodes, six co-located simulations reached 4.09 times the throughput of sequential execution. Matched controls showed no consistent benefit from proportional request shaping. Beyond the nominal CPU capacity, throughput collapsed with default busy-waiting; yielding waits softened the collapse. In one six-simulation run, the online controller performed 120 in-place resizes of running solvers with zero pod restarts; the pipeline reached 2.5 times the throughput of sequential execution. In a separate comparison on 16 physical cores, reallocating ranks from the far field to the near-wall zone reduced fixed-iteration wall-clock time by factors of 2.0 to 4.2 relative to the original concentric allocation, depending on mesh and iteration horizon. The reallocation also outperformed balanced Scotch partitions. The implementation requires no changes to OpenFOAM, the MPI library, or the Kubernetes scheduler.

MCCL: Training Pytorch models across a fleet of Macs at Skywalker Sound

Kevin Sasso, Chris Fiegel, Francis Aitken, Nicolas Tsingos, Nicholas Tong

Skywalker Sound, a premier audio post-production facility, operates more than 200 M4 Max Mac Studios on a 10Gb Ethernet network. When not in use by artists, these machines sit idle, representing massive untapped unified memory and compute capacity. While these fleets are excellent candidates for distributed machine learning alongside existing NVIDIA GPU clusters, PyTorch lacks an accelerated distributed backend for Apple's Metal Performance Shaders (MPS). To bridge this gap, we introduce the Metal Communication Collective Library (MCCL), the first open-source MPS backend for multi-node PyTorch training over switched Ethernet. We evaluate its performance and scalability across 24 nodes, demonstrating that large all-reduce operations reach 98-99.7% of TCP goodput. Training a 113.5M-parameter Vision Transformer (ViT) scales from 198 to 4,568 samples/s, achieving 95.9% parallel efficiency. Benchmarked against an NVIDIA A100 GPU, one M4 Max Mac equals roughly 1.7x the throughput of FP32 matrix multiplication, and 5.5 Macs match an A100 using TF32. Harnessing 100 idle Macs for 12 hours nightly offsets approximately $200,000 annually in equivalent cloud compute costs. Our results demonstrate that existing Mac infrastructure can be seamlessly repurposed for high performance distributed training without abandoning the standard PyTorch codebase.

DistOptimize: Automatic Optimization of Distributed Protocols

David Chu McElroy, Shadaj Laddad, Lucky Katahanas, Mingwei Samuel, Octavio Lomeli, Natacha Crooks, Joseph M. Hellerstein, Mohsen Lesani

Distributed consensus and consistency protocols are difficult to reason about yet foundational to the cloud; as such, they often undergo a rigorous proof and formal verification process before deployment. The same level of rigor is rarely applied to protocol modifications, which occur frequently in production and threaten to compromise safety. In this paper, we eliminate the risk of safety violations from manual modifications by presenting an automatic optimizer for distributed protocols: DistOptimize. DistOptimize adapts throughput optimizations from academic languages to frameworks used in production, verifying the correctness of the rewrites in Rocq and automating their application through a combination of calibration and ILP-based search space navigation. Applied to both fundamental distributed protocols and protocols used at AWS, DistOptimize improves throughput by up to 4x and increases latency by at most 0.3ms.
