When Log Parsing Removes What Matters: Detecting Failures in Distributed GPU Workloads

Boyuan Cui, Yuyang Zeng, Yifang Tian, Hans-Arno Jacobsen

Large AI models increasingly rely on distributed GPU execution, yet it remains unclear whether established anomaly detection methods transfer effectively to this setting. We introduce GF-Bench, a PyTorch-based framework for generating controlled failures in distributed GPU workloads, and a dataset produced with it. The framework supports extensible workload and fault-injection logic; based on this design, the current release targets failures visible in multi-GPU communication logs and provides 220 labeled two-GPU runs covering normal behavior, CUDA out-of-memory fail-stop faults, and persistent-straggler fail-slow faults. Using GF-Bench, we evaluate three sequence-based methods (DeepLog, LogAnomaly, and LogBERT) and the large language model (LLM)-based LogPrompt with in-context learning (ICL) and chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting strategies on parsed logs, and additionally evaluate LogPrompt on raw logs. On parsed inputs, no method reliably detects both failure classes, and the highest overall F1 score is 0.667. Raw inputs raise the overall F1 score of ICL-LogPrompt to 0.983, at 9.0x its average input-token usage and 8.9x its per-run cost. These results reveal a trade-off between effectiveness and efficiency: parsed inputs reduce LLM token use and inference cost but can discard the distributed execution context required for accurate failure detection. GF-Bench provides a reproducible basis for studying cost-efficient anomaly detection methods and can be extended to additional GPU workloads and failure types.

Barren Plateaus in Quantum Linear Combinations: Interference and Lie-Algebraic Control

Amir Koutahi, Pouya Kananian, Hans-Arno Jacobsen

A coherent sum of quantum circuits introduces interference that can alter the training signal. We distinguish a single linear combination of unitaries (LCU) from a circuit that repeatedly alternates branch operations and ancilla mixing. For a single-pass LCU, independent branches with zero matrix means cannot erase the differentiated branch's gradient variance: the total variance is at least the branch variance times the fourth power of its coefficient magnitude. This bound holds at any gate position and does not require the circuit unitaries to be Haar-random. Beyond this lower bound, we derive exact loss and gradient formulas that quantify the additional contributions from interference between branches. One of these terms depends on relative coefficient phases and vanishes when the branch ensemble is invariant under multiplication by $i \mathbb{I}$; a four-qubit matchgate example shows that it can be nonzero. For repeated interleaving with full special-unitary ancilla control, we determine the generated Lie algebra from the associative algebra of the branches, including the available central phase directions. This control result predicts concentration only with additional assumptions on circuit sampling. Matchgate examples exhibit polynomial single-pass LCU variances and exponential concentration under joint Haar-random sampling. We also derive coefficient-selection rules and bounds for postselection, measurement error, and approximate moments.

A Hybrid Framework for Explainable Aviation Risk: Causal Chain Extraction from Safety Reports with Physics-Based Failure Quantification and Interventional Analysis

Yutian Pang, Yifang Tian, Jiacheng Xie, Xinyu Zhao, Jueming Hu, John-Paul Clarke, Hans-Arno Jacobsen

Aviation authorities hold decades of accident reports whose narratives record how investigators reconstructed each accident. Computational work on these archives has mostly sorted reports into fixed taxonomies. In this work, we propose a hybrid framework in which a text-based corpus identifies the leading factors of a failure mode. Physics-based models then quantify how likely that failure is at a stated operating point. Ordered causal chains extracted from 56,202 American accident reports with a local large language model aggregate into a causation knowledge graph. On an evaluation sample of 2,000 reports, the chains recover 90.8% of investigator-flagged causes. Each physical factor whose drivers the record carries receives an occurrence model calibrated to the accident population. A leaky noisy-OR fitted to the corpus combines the factors into a failure mode probability that supports intervention. For engine power loss, the carburetor icing model separates 1,205 icing accidents from other accidents using temperature and dewpoint alone, reaching 0.61 in area under the receiver operating characteristic curve against a density ratio ceiling of 0.64. Routine weather hours give no valid control, because flying concentrates in fair weather. On later years the physics adds 0.03 to that area for occurrence and nothing for severity, so its value lies in interpretability. On four named accidents, abduction gives a probability of necessity of 0.29 to 0.50 for the heat omission, under monotonicity. The Fast Causal Inference algorithm does not license the largest backdoor adjustment on the learned networks.
