MAVEN: A Macro-Societal Value Evaluation Framework of Multimodal Content with Compact Aligned Evaluators

Zijuan Zhao, Zheren Fu, Hou Xia, Licheng Zhang, Yi Liu, Zhendong Mao

Assessing whether multimodal content aligns with macro-societal values, such as peace, justice, and freedom, has become an increasingly urgent challenge. Existing frameworks are largely confined to safety-oriented taxonomies, text-only psychometric probes, or single-label classification. Therefore, we propose MAVEN, a hierarchical framework for macro-societal value evaluation of multimodal content, grounded in international human-rights instruments and cultural value theory. MAVEN organizes values into 6 primary dimensions and 72 secondary indicators, supporting multi-level quantitative scoring. Building on MAVEN, we construct a human-verified multimodal benchmark and a soft-match metric to evaluate VLMs' assessments across value dimensions. For evaluator optimization, we propose a span-adaptive variant of multi-level preference optimization for evaluator distillation, together with a training-free multi-role consensus strategy at inference time. We evaluate existing open- and closed-source VLMs on our benchmark, revealing shared tendencies and clear differences in macro-societal value judgments. Experiments show that our compact 2B evaluator matches its 8B counterpart in the same family and approaches frontier closed-source VLMs, offering a practical path toward scalable macro-societal value evaluation. Our SA-MDPO implementation and MacroValue-Bench are available at https://github.com/zzzzzzzzjj/MAVEN.

Turing LLM Post-Training: Calibrated Distillation and Efficient Dynamic-MoE Execution

Yue He, Jiahui Hu, Shaman Tang, Hua Zhou, Qiman Wu, Menglin Li, Yizhao Wang, Yuheng Zhang 等 22 位作者

We study post-training for dynamically routed mixture-of-experts (MoE) models, focusing on integrating independently optimized specialists while keeping consolidation efficient. Our approach combines calibrated multi-teacher on-policy distillation (C-MOPD), which matches each selected teacher on a local Top-$K$ support with teacher-wise loss normalization and clipping, with an execution path that uses post-capacity bounded-width dispatch, final-route replay, and asynchronous rollout--training overlap. On Turing-20B-A2B, the selected model achieves a four-domain normalized integration score of 0.9988 and retains at least 90.16\% of the measured specialist gain in every domain. At matched $K=32$, the full calibration objective scores 0.9962, compared with 0.9724 without calibration and 0.9834 without clipping. At a matched 8K response cap, the model exceeds both shared SFT and Qwen3-8B on all four reasoning-enabled mathematics and code benchmarks (unweighted mean: 85.92, versus 80.33 for Qwen3-8B and 74.21 for SFT), and improves over SFT on ten of twelve broader evaluation metrics. In a PPU-based profile, the combined execution configuration reduces consolidation step time from 398.7 to 139.3 seconds, an observed 2.86$\times$ speedup over serial execution. These results demonstrate strong specialist integration alongside more efficient consolidation, while reflecting the complete training and execution framework rather than any single component.

Iterative Calibration and Learning: Mitigating Teacher Bias in LLM Distillation without Target-Domain Reward Feedback

Haichen Hu, Yuheng Zhang, David Simchi-Levi

Large language model (LLM) distillation can propagate teacher bias under covariate shift when target reward feedback is unavailable. We propose Iterative Calibration and Learning (IterCaL), which alternates source-reward teacher calibration through token-level branching with student learning on target prompts. We prove polynomial convergence in expected average KL to the oracle student, the reference-regularized target-reward maximizer within a potentially misspecified student class; a quantified source-to-target calibration discrepancy gives an explicit additive true-return term. Our separation shows that regularized direct teacher matching retains positive oracle-KL error at its population optimum for every shared reference penalty, even when the teacher is stronger than every student. On the same instance, IterCaL converges to the oracle using source rewards alone.

Powering Up Zeroth-Order Training via Subspace Gradient Orthogonalization

Yicheng Lang, Changsheng Wang, Yihua Zhang, Mingyi Hong, Zheng Zhang, Wotao Yin, Sijia Liu

Zeroth-order (ZO) optimization provides a gradient-free alternative to first-order (FO) methods by estimating gradients via finite differences of function evaluations, and has recently emerged as a memory-efficient paradigm for fine-tuning large-scale models by avoiding backpropagation. However, ZO optimization has a fundamental tension between accuracy and query efficiency. In this work, we show that ZO optimization can be substantially improved by unifying two complementary principles: (i) a projection-based subspace view that reduces gradient estimation variance by exploiting the intrinsic low-rank structure of model updates, and (ii) Muon-style spectral optimization that applies gradient orthogonalization to extract informative spectral structure from noisy ZO gradients. These findings form a unified framework of subspace gradient orthogonalization, which we instantiate in a new method, ZO-Muon, admitting a natural interpretation as a low-rank Muon optimizer in the ZO setting. Extensive experiments on large language models (LLMs) and vision transformers (ViTs) demonstrate that ZO-Muon significantly accelerates convergence and achieves a win-win improvement in accuracy and query/runtime efficiency. Notably, compared to the popular MeZO baseline, ZO-Muon requires only 24.7% of the queries to reach the same SST-2 performance for LLM fine-tuning, and improves accuracy by 25.1% on ViT-L fine-tuning on CIFAR-100.

In-Context Learning for Multi-Fidelity Multiscale Model Closure and Cross-Operator Out-Of-Distribution Generalization

Xinyuan Li, Matthew Zahr, Panos Stinis, Zecheng Zhang

Multi-fidelity learning uses low-fidelity information (coarse-scale PDE models) together with limited high-fidelity data (fine-scale solutions) to obtain high-accuracy PDE solutions. It is a data-driven approach to downscale reduced-order models to solve PDEs efficiently and accurately. Standard multi-fidelity learning focuses on one operator or PDE; given a new PDE, retraining using additional coarse-fine solution pairs may be required, which is costly. In this work, we propose an in-context multi-fidelity learning framework for learning multiple multi-fidelity operators with one shared model. The model is trained using paired low- and high-fidelity examples as demonstrations from multiple operators, together with a new coarse-scale solution query, to predict the corresponding fine-scale solution. Once trained, given a new PDE operator, a few (fewer than five) coarse-fine demonstration pairs, and a low-cost coarse query, the model predicts the corresponding fine-scale solution without fine-tuning. When the target operator appears in the training dataset but has a different prediction goal, such as predicting beyond the training time interval, no additional demonstrations are needed. Instead, the model uses training coarse-fine pairs from that PDE and information from other training operators. Testing then only requires generating a low-cost coarse-scale solution query, without fine-tuning. Notably, our smallest model contains only 255,364 trainable parameters, corresponding to approximately 456 parameters per training operator for 560 operators.

Zooming without Zooming v2: From Seeing Details to Connecting Evidence for Generalizable Multimodal Perception

Lai Wei, Yatai Li, Liangbo He, Jun Lan, Renjie Gu, Linhan Cao, Junkai Lin, Huijia Zhu 等 13 位作者

Multimodal perception forms the foundation of multimodal intelligence. In particular, spatial perception and multimodal long-context understanding are two pivotal tasks that underpin embodied AI and multimodal agents. However, synthesizing targeted, high-quality training data for these tasks remains difficult and costly. Our key insight is that these tasks share an underlying capability, which we call connecting evidence: identifying relevant visual facts, binding them to the correct entities, recovering their relations, and composing them into an answer. Crucially, targeted training data are far easier to synthesize for this capability than for these tasks themselves. To strengthen this capability, we propose EvidenceConnect, an easy-to-implement data synthesis framework that uses zoomed views of related regions within a single image to generate questions requiring comparison, aggregation, or chaining of visual evidence. To ensure quality, a reference answer is retained only when independent VLMs agree on it, and region-ablation tests discard questions whose answer survives the removal of selected regions. We then train base VLMs on the resulting data with RLVR, obtaining Zooming without Zooming v2 (ZwZ2). Although the synthesized data are not tailored to any downstream benchmark, ZwZ2 improves fine-grained and spatial perception, with further gains on embodied spatial reasoning, multimodal long-context understanding, multimodal agent tasks, and general visual reasoning. These results establish EvidenceConnect as an effective framework for supervising evidence connection and suggest that strengthening this shared capability leads to more generalizable multimodal perception.

Advancement or Acceleration? How Data Curation Improves LLM Training

Jiaxing Wang, Zicheng Zhang, Deping Xiang, Jin Xu, Yong Li, Chao Liu, Pengzhang Liu, Qixia Jiang

While data curation is widely credited with improving large language model training, a basic question remains unresolved: does curation expand what a model can ultimately learn, or merely reach the same solution faster? In this paper, we formalize this distinction between advancement (improving the attainable performance) and acceleration (reaching the same performance with less data). Through an analytic characterization and real-world LLM experiments, we show that advancement requires a correctable train-target gap. When the baseline training and target objectives coincide, no curation policy improves the endpoint, although curation may still accelerate training. This reframes advancement as a property of the curation task rather than the curation method. Under a common gap-centric view of data mixture and selection, we operationalize this condition as the $Δ$-test, an observable discrepancy between the uncurated baseline's training and target losses that is computable prior to expensive curation. Across extensive experiments, an appreciably nonzero $Δ$ predicts persistent gains, whereas gains near $Δ=0$ tend to diminish as the training budget grows. Beyond individual methods, our findings recenter data curation on the task itself and point to target-set construction as a promising direction for shaping what curation can achieve.

OneEEG: A Unified Signal-Visual Multimodal Language Model with Task-Aware Mixture of Projectors for Multi-Task EEG Understanding

Jiacheng Zhang, Xueyi Zhang, Xin Lu, Siqi Cai, Haizhou Li

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in clinical assessment, brain-computer interfaces, and cognitive-state analysis, yet EEG modeling remains fragmented across task paradigms. Recent multimodal large language models (MLLMs) provide a promising interface for flexible multimodal reasoning, but their ability to understand EEG inputs remains limited. In this work, we propose OneEEG, a unified EEG-MLLM framework for multi-task EEG understanding. By training on our curated OneEEG-Instruct, a multi-task EEG instruction-tuning dataset, OneEEG jointly models numerical EEG representations and visual EEG representations, and introduces a task-aware Mixture of Projectors (MoP) to align heterogeneous EEG features across different task families with the LLM embedding space. We further establish OneEEG-Bench, a benchmark for evaluating current MLLMs and our method on multi-task EEG understanding. Experiments show that existing MLLMs have limited ability to interpret EEG inputs, while OneEEG achieves stronger performance by integrating numerical and visual EEG representations with task-aware EEG-to-LLM projection. Extensive ablations and analyses further reveal the effects of visual EEG renderings, MoP variants, router behavior, and feature dispersion across EEG tasks.

Gating and Learnable Temperature for Graph Attention Mechanisms

Zhongtian Ma, Hao Wu, Yexin Zhang, Qiaosheng Zhang, Chao Gao

Graph attention networks learn neighbor importance through data-dependent coefficients, but standard layers lack explicit control over unreliable feature dimensions and use fixed sharpness of attention coefficient distributions. This paper proposes gated graph attention and learnable temperature for common graph attention mechanisms. Gated graph attention filters feature or message responses to reduce the influence of unreliable dimensions, while learnable temperature dynamically adjusts the sharpness of the attention coefficient distribution. We conduct experiments on five standard node classification benchmarks and five heterophilic benchmarks. On most of these benchmarks, our two modifications improve upon the corresponding graph attention backbones, and combining them can yield further gains. Controlled noise experiments further verify the behavior of the proposed mechanisms under feature perturbations. Theoretical analysis explains these results by showing that gating improves robustness when only part of the feature coordinates are reliable, while temperature is beneficial when global noise weakens the discriminability of node features.

Correlation-Aware Exploration for Long-Trace Reasoning

Junxing Hu, Zicheng Zhang, Zhiqian Zhang, Ai Han, Yifeng Zhang, Pengzhang Liu, Ling Li

Reasoning models trained with Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) now produce chains of thought thousands of tokens long, and recent studies reveal that such training is prone to policy collapse. Entropy regularization is the standard remedy, but it works by pushing probability mass away from the few tokens that carry it and toward the vast low-probability tail of the vocabulary, and it applies this force once for every token of the reasoning trace. This puts the bonus in direct conflict with the entropy decay that convergence requires, and makes its coefficient difficult to set in the long-trace regime. To resolve this tension, we propose Info-GRPO, an information-theoretic framework that cultivates correlation between the policy and a latent prior. Rather than raising entropy everywhere, Info-GRPO builds on the mutual information between a latent variable and the trajectory it induces: augmenting prompts with latent seeds during training lets the model explore diverse policies correlated with the prior, while the seed-conditioned entropy is guided toward convergence. Diversity is therefore carried across whole reasoning traces rather than by per-token randomness, and exploration no longer fights entropy reduction. Experiments show that Info-GRPO outperforms vanilla GRPO and entropy-regularized GRPO across diverse reasoning benchmarks. On AIME24, it improves $Avg@8$ over GRPO by 3.75%, 1.66%, 4.16%, and 4.17% on four backbones, and it reaches the same majority-vote accuracy with $8\times$ fewer samples. Code and models will be publicly released.

Ask to Learn: Query-Based Collaborative Reinforcement Learning

Kaicheng Zhang, Hongqian Niu, Laixi Shi, Didong Li, Guannan Qu, Zhun Deng

Offline reinforcement learning is fundamentally limited by the coverage of the available data, while collecting additional trajectories through online exploration may be costly, unsafe, or infeasible. We study whether this limitation can be overcome without directly interacting with the underlying environment. Motivated by practical settings such as collaborator-mediated simulation, where a collaborator can provide information complementary to the offline data, we introduce query-based collaborative reinforcement learning to study how to acquire this information efficiently. The learner starts with a fixed offline dataset and adaptively queries state-time pairs; the collaborator samples an action according to a fixed, possibly suboptimal policy, and the simulator returns the corresponding reward and next state. For finite-horizon tabular problems, we derive an instance-dependent information-theoretic lower bound on the additional queries required to identify an $ε$-optimal policy and develop a local quadratic approximation. Guided by this characterization, we develop an adaptive query-allocation algorithm whose query complexity nearly matches the local benchmark under suitable conditions. Experiments on multiple synthetic and semi-synthetic environments demonstrate the empirical efficiency of the proposed method.

Swin Transformer:使用移位窗口的层次化视觉Transformer

Swin Transformer: Hierarchical Vision Transformer using Shifted Windows

Ze Liu, Yutong Lin, Yue Cao, Han Hu, Yixuan Wei, Zheng Zhang, Stephen Lin, Baining Guo

AI 速览:提出一种以移位窗口计算表示的层次化视觉Transformer,可作为通用视觉骨干网络,并在分类、检测和分割任务上取得作者报告的良好结果。

This paper presents a new vision Transformer, called Swin Transformer, that capably serves as a general-purpose backbone for computer vision. Challenges in adapting Transformer from language to vision arise from differences between the two domains, such as large variations in the scale of visual entities and the high resolution of pixels in images compared to words in text. To address these differences, we propose a hierarchical Transformer whose representation is computed with \textbf{S}hifted \textbf{win}dows. The shifted windowing scheme brings greater efficiency by limiting self-attention computation to non-overlapping local windows while also allowing for cross-window connection. This hierarchical architecture has the flexibility to model at various scales and has linear computational complexity with respect to image size. These qualities of Swin Transformer make it compatible with a broad range of vision tasks, including image classification (87.3 top-1 accuracy on ImageNet-1K) and dense prediction tasks such as object detection (58.7 box AP and 51.1 mask AP on COCO test-dev) and semantic segmentation (53.5 mIoU on ADE20K val). Its performance surpasses the previous state-of-the-art by a large margin of +2.7 box AP and +2.6 mask AP on COCO, and +3.2 mIoU on ADE20K, demonstrating the potential of Transformer-based models as vision backbones. The hierarchical design and the shifted window approach also prove beneficial for all-MLP architectures. The code and models are publicly available at~\url{https://github.com/microsoft/Swin-Transformer}.
