Event2Reward: Learning Robotic Rewards from Progress Relations

原文摘要

Learning task progress from robot demonstrations provides a practical way to construct dense shaping rewards for robotic reinforcement learning. A common approach uses normalized demonstration time as progress labels, implicitly assuming monotonically increasing task progress. During policy exploration, however, actual task progress can stall or even regress. Such models may mistake regressions for progress, assigning positive shaping rewards to actions that cause progress loss. Real suboptimal and failed executions offer corrective experience, but assigning absolute progress values to their states is difficult. Our key observation is that stalls, regressions, and recoveries establish local relative progress relations even when absolute progress is unknown. We introduce Event2Reward, which uses normalized temporal labels to anchor the progress scale and these within-trajectory relations to constrain local changes, combining absolute and relative progress supervision. Its progress predictions serve as potentials for reward shaping. We curate an event-annotated dataset from approximately 100K raw real-robot execution records, covering successful, suboptimal, and failed executions, without requiring framewise absolute progress labels. Under the same training budgets, Event2Reward improves average policy success by 18.16 percentage points over a baseline using only sparse task rewards across 40 tasks in four LIBERO suites. On real robots, average success after 30 minutes of wall-clock training reaches 60.0% on three precise insertion tasks and 90.0% on three object manipulation tasks, exceeding the sparse-reward baseline under the same budget by 36.7 and 23.3 percentage points, respectively. Ablation studies further show that absolute progress supervision and relative progress relations are complementary, with joint supervision yielding better downstream policy learning.

EmbodiExp: Compositional Experience Transfer for Embodied Agents

Zhifeng Gu, Ying Chen, Rui Jiang, Lei Yi, Bing Wang

原文摘要

Experience can help embodied agents turn high-level plans into grounded actions, but transferring it across tasks remains challenging: previously effective strategies may be inapplicable to the current state or fail to produce their intended outcomes. We present EmbodiExp, a framework for constructing transferable experiences and composing them online during embodied task execution. Our key observation is that tasks often share subgoals whose completion can be assessed independently of overall task success. We therefore introduce an outcome-grounded subgoal experience that specifies a subgoal, applicability conditions, an adaptable policy, and a verifiable outcome. During execution, applicable experiences guide action generation, while verified outcomes can establish the conditions required by subsequent experiences, enabling online composition. Subgoal-level outcome attribution further enables failure utilization: failed trajectories can still contribute verified local successes and condition-specific guidance on actions to avoid. Experiments on multiple embodied benchmarks under a fold-based protocol with frozen experience banks demonstrate the effectiveness of EmbodiExp.

EgoContact: Evaluating Physical Intelligence with Egocentric Video

Adam Deryło, Alexey Gavryushin, Daniel Cremers, Marc Pollefeys, Xi Wang

原文摘要

Egocentric video has emerged as one of the most scalable sources of data for learning generalizable manipulation priors. Yet, despite its growing use in pretraining robotic policies, it has been underutilized as a validation tool for physical intelligence, a key component of which is understanding where to make contact with an object to achieve an intended interaction. We present EgoContact, a large-scale egocentric dataset for evaluating the generalizability and precision of learned manipulation priors through future contact-point prediction. EgoContact contains 22.5K manually verified interaction events, each with a pre-contact observation, semantic intent, and pixel-precise contact locations. We find that current methods often struggle to predict precise interaction contacts and sometimes fail to localize the target object in diverse, in-the-wild scenes, even when allowed multiple predictions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the usefulness of EgoContact's annotated interactions for robotic manipulation: simply using EgoContact as the memory bank of an existing affordance-transfer policy improves grasp success from 14.2% to 31.2% in simulation and from 16% to 58% on a real robot.

Learning Functional Specialisation for Bimanual Robotic Control

Jingwen Li, Levin Kuhlmann, Jason Friedman, Gideon Kowadlo

原文摘要

Bimanual robotic control requires simultaneous management of distinct functional demands under motor noise, energetic costs, and communication delays. We investigate how learning responsibility should be organised across modular controllers and the two arms in a simulated musculoskeletal system with two communicating recurrent controllers. Using a 2 x 2 design, we compare differential versus shared controller objectives and fixed versus balanced hand-task assignments. Task-aligned functional specialisation was strongest when differential objectives were combined with a fixed assignment aligned with contralateral control routing. This condition achieved the highest canonical-task performance and control efficiency, reaching 81.33% bimanual success. Its advantage over shared objectives increased with motor noise but narrowed under stronger energy penalties. Stronger specialisation also reduced hand-role flexibility: reversing the hand roles decreased bimanual success by 80.46 percentage points under Differential-Fixed training, compared with 1.51 percentage points under Shared-Balanced training. These results show that controller objectives and hand-task experience jointly determine functional organisation. Stronger role-specific specialisation favours performance and efficiency when roles remain stable, whereas more distributed training favours interchangeability when roles change.

Actuator-Aware Observer Inputs for Cascade ADRC of Quadrotors Under Rotor Lag, Measurement Delay and Sensor Noise

Xuan-Quy Dao, Ngoc-Bich Le, Le-Minh Nguyen

原文摘要

In sampled cascade linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) of quadrotors, the extended-state observer typically receives the instantaneous command, although the delayed measurement reflects an earlier, rotor-filtered acceleration. This paper proposes actuator-aware (AA) observer inputs: altitude and attitude observers use limited virtual inputs filtered by an assumed rotor model and aligned with the measurement delay, and horizontal observers use acceleration reconstructed from measured attitude. Fixed gains are selected on the discrete-time model under sensitivity and step-response requirements and stationary covariance ceilings on each channel's control variance and increment and on the noise-induced inner-loop increment of the full cascade. In paired set-point trials, PID-Budget, AA-Budget and AA-HalfGain reach mean RMSEs of 65.5, 19.2 and 16.9~mm; under a stricter common cascade ceiling, the AA designs reach 29.9 and 26.4~mm versus 72.3~mm for a PID that uses roughly double their rotor-command increment. PX4 software-in-the-loop runs reproduce these results. Behind EKF2, a noise model fitted to the estimation errors predicts the roll/pitch and yaw increments within 5\% on held-out and out-of-sample runs and the total rotor-command increment within 14\%. Redesigned for this stack under the same sensitivity and response specification and estimator-aware ceilings, AA-Budget-E reduces the set-point RMSE from 59.1~mm (PID-E) to 44.0~mm with a lower rotor-command increment in every paired set-point and lemniscate run (mean S6 rotor-command-increment reductions relative to PID-E: 45\% before and 15\% after output quantization); AA-HalfGain-E beats PID-E only on the lemniscate. The evidence is simulation-based, and the ceilings are nominal tuning constraints.

原文摘要

Operational strategies for long-horizon robotic tasks require reliable evaluation to determine whether execution is progressing, stalling, regressing, or recovering from errors. Yet real- world robot datasets that capture error recovery and provide frame-level error annotations remain scarce. To address this gap, we introduce and open-source ReSTEP, a dataset of 3,156 episodes across two manipulation tasks with semantic stage labels and frame-level er- ror annotations. ReSTEP supports training and benchmarking progress monitors through successful execution, mistakes, and recovery. Existing progress estimators can struggle to distinguish visually similar task stages and maintain temporally consistent predictions while responding to genuine setbacks. We therefore propose REMORA, an online progress esti- mator that combines recurrent visual memory, distributional prediction, and causal peak selection. Memory retains execution history to help resolve visual ambiguity, while distribu- tional prediction represents alternative progress hypotheses and causal peak selection tracks a supported hypothesis over time. Together, these components enable consistent progress tracking that remains responsive to errors and recovery. Experiments on both ReSTEP tasks demonstrate that REMORA outperforms the state-of-the-art SARM baseline in progress ac- curacy and temporal consistency.

CAPTURER: A Dexterous Aerial Manipulator for Dynamic and Precise Grasping across Diverse Environments

Meng Wang, Jindou Jia, Sicheng Zhou, Zeshuai Chen, Kexin Guo, Xiang Yu, Lei Guo

原文摘要

As a representative form of embodied robotic interaction, aerial grasping requires close coordination between the aerial platform and manipulator. Most existing systems perform aerial grasping with static or slowly moving targets under fixed scenarios. Dynamic and precise grasping across different conditions introduces additional challenges, including target motion, localization drift, dynamic coupling, and external disturbances. In this work, we present CAPTURER, a dexterous aerial manipulator for centimeter-level grasping across diverse environments. To achieve the challenging goal, we first develop an onboard perception system for state estimation and target detection. Drift correction and global pose transformation are introduced to improve target localization during flight. A cooperative motion planner is proposed to coordinate the mobility of the aerial platform with the dexterity of the manipulator according to the relative target state. To maintain grasping accuracy under disturbances, we design a disturbance-rejection controller to compensate for dynamic coupling, model uncertainty, and external disturbances. The capability of CAPTURER is validated through indoor and outdoor experiments with both static and moving targets. The results demonstrate that CAPTURER achieves centimeter-level grasping accuracy for a marker pen measuring only 1.5 cm in diameter at flight speeds exceeding 1.5 m/s.

Controlling Continuum Robot Shape in Enclosed Space with Embedded Sensing using IMU and Actuator Feedback

Jiahe Wang, Sultan Haidar Ali, Eric Weissman, Jiefeng Sun

原文摘要

Controlling continuum robots' shape to operate in confined, enclosed environments is challenging, since it cannot rely on external observation. Existing embedded shape sensing methods, although they can provide shape reconstruction, are insufficient to enable real-time shape control due to limitations in reconstruction accuracy, computational speed, and compatibility with shape-state representation. In this work, we present an embedded shape-sensing framework that uses readily available IMU and actuator feedback to reconstruct the continuum-robot shape with a neural network, providing accurate shape feedback at $400~\mathrm{Hz}$ for physical closed-loop control. We systematically investigate four key reconstruction design choices: shape-state representation, network architecture, training objective, and sensing inputs, through more than $5{,}000$ trained models on one- and three-segment continuum robots. The selected framework achieves global shape errors of $0.9\%L$ and $1.7\%L$ (of the robot length) for the one- and three-segment systems, respectively. In closed-loop control, one-segment tip tracking achieves a $6.1\%L$ error and three-segment shape control achieves a $2.3\%L$ global shape error, whereas IMU--PCC reconstruction using the same uncompensated measurements fails. Enclosed-space experiments further demonstrate operation without external observation. These results provide a practical framework for translating readily available embedded sensing into high-rate feedback for continuum robot closed-loop control.

Robotic Data Inoculation

Qiyang Li, Zhiyuan Zhou, Charles Xu, Sergey Levine

原文摘要

Modern robot learning systems feed on high-quality demonstration data, and their performance hinges on coverage. Without good coverage, small errors compound and the policy can quickly go into out-of-distribution states from which it cannot recover. Yet there is no principled way of collecting high-coverage data, and data collection often relies on heuristic instructions to human operators. Purely online reinforcement learning (RL) explores at the cost of safety and sample efficiency, while DAgger-style interventions require the policy to fail by chance before a human can correct it. In this paper, we ask instead whether we can modify how the robot behaves during data collection to collect more useful data. We propose Data Inoculation (DI), a shared-control framework in which a human provide closed-loop teleoperation commands while a residual policy perturbs these commands. The residual policy is trained online, on the growing dataset, with the same reward-maximizing objective later used for policy extraction, so its perturbations steer data collection toward the deviations a policy trained on the data would make. These perturbations expose the robot to a wider range of states, while the human's continuous corrections provide recovery demonstrations, "inoculating" the dataset against the learner's future mistakes while the human remains in control. On three challenging real-world robotic tasks, DI consistently improves or matches the success rate of policies trained with both behavioral cloning and offline RL, showing DI as an effective data collection strategy for improving downstream policy performance.

Catch It All!: Generalizable Dynamic Catching with a Dexterous Hand

Arth Shukla, Kehlani Fay, Huaze Liu, Darin Djapri, Alexiy Buynitsky, Nicklas Hansen

原文摘要

Catching arbitrary objects requires generalization to novel projectiles and real-time adaptation to unpredictable contact dynamics under noisy visual observations. This paper presents Catch It All!, a sim-to-real catching framework for humanoid robots that generalizes and adapts to unseen objects with variable physical properties for underhand and overhand catches, using only one egocentric camera. We learn policies which generalize to unseen objects with varying geometry, deformability, elasticity, and physical properties. Effective grasps which adapt real-time to object poses and shapes are learned through careful grasp reward design. We provide safety-aware curricula which enable safe, high-frequency action execution near hardware limits, including wrist torque limits as low as 5 Nm. We validate our system by deploying zero-shot on a Unitree G1. With only one egocentric camera, Catch It All! successfully performs underhand and overhand catches on 9 unseen objects not seen during training, including low-rebound plushes, semi-deformable toys and chip bags, and rigid-elastic objects with high rebound on contact.

OWLS: Open-world Language-conditioned Speed Fields for Zero-Shot Rover Navigation

Chahyon Ku, Erica Tevere, Georgios Georgakis, Rudra Mukherjee, Bernadette Bucher

原文摘要

Semantics can provide a proxy for physical traversability. Terrain that looks like loose sand or a rock field is likely to have similar physical properties. Open-vocabulary vision-language models (VLMs) enable this physical reasoning over terrain outside any fixed label set. We present Open-world Language-conditioned Speed Fields (OWLS), which plans directly over the dense feature map of a VLM. Prompted with a description of traversable terrain, the VLM scores every pixel of a single camera image; OWLS projects these scores onto the ground, adapts them to the platform with two morphological operations, and uses the result as the speed field of a minimum-time planner, so terrain appearance and obstacle clearance shape one trajectory. OWLS needs no task-specific training, no terrain annotation, no persistent map, and no exteroceptive sensor beyond the camera. We evaluate it on a physical rover indoors and off-road, on simulated Mars and Moon rovers over 200 procedurally generated terrains, and on real planetary imagery. Self-Supervised Doppler-Guided RF Odometry

Kunzhe Song, Jialuo Du, Jingkai Lin, Huacheng Zeng

原文摘要

Radio-frequency (RF) sensing enables robot ego-motion estimation in darkness, smoke, and fog, yet RF odometry remains challenging because multipath and moving reflectors make cross-frame matching highly ambiguous. Existing methods often rely on auxiliary inertial sensors or ground-truth pose supervision. We present RFWalk, a self-supervised, RF-only odometry framework that models dense correspondences across range-azimuth frames as random walks on a space-time graph and learns them from unlabeled sequences through temporal cycle consistency. To rule out correspondences that are cycle-consistent but physically implausible, we introduce a Doppler consistency loss that constrains correspondence-induced motion using radial velocity measured by the RF sensor itself. Ego-motion is then recovered through robust $\mathrm{SE}(2)$ registration that suppresses uncertain correspondences and those arising from independently moving objects. Without pose labels or auxiliary sensors, RFWalk remains competitive with supervised baselines in static scenes and reduces absolute trajectory error by 58% in dynamic scenes with moving pedestrians.

Open-World Object Motion Anticipation via Meta-Learned Semantic Adaptation

Mason Peterson, Gage MacLin, Camilla Tabasso, Jonathan P. How, Joshua Migdal, Tye Brady, Taskin Padir

原文摘要

Anticipating the motion of nearby objects is critical for safe and efficient robot navigation. Without a proper understanding of what may move, a robot may plan overly conservative, inefficient trajectories to guarantee safety, or it may be overly risky, resulting in unacceptable collisions. While tracking and predicting the motion of known objects has seen significant progress, little research addresses how a robot should adapt online to novel objects, including anticipating how one object may move another (e.g., a person operating a forklift to move a pallet). To enable this capability, we propose a meta-learned graph neural network that leverages a semantic, geometric, and relational history of objects to accurately predict, from a few online observations, when objects will begin to move in new environments. We demonstrate that our method, which is trained only in simulation, accurately anticipates the motion of objects unseen at training time, transfers to hardware without any fine-tuning, and outperforms a vision-language model and a class-frequency baseline in both simulation and hardware experiments. Our method's accurate prediction enables collision-free traversals in a closed-loop navigation simulation, while remaining within four seconds of the fastest, collision-prone planner.

Learning Event-based Obstacle Avoidance via Differentiable Simulation

Chenlu Shou, Yunfan Ren, Jiaxu Xing, Davide Scaramuzza

原文摘要

Reliable obstacle avoidance is essential for safe quadrotor flight in unknown environments, yet conventional frame-based cameras remain challenged by motion blur, limited dynamic range, and latency under fast motion. Event cameras, with sub-millisecond latency, high dynamic range, and negligible motion blur, offer a promising alternative, but leveraging them for closed-loop control remains difficult. Existing approaches either adopt cascaded architectures that first estimate depth and then map it to control commands, introducing error propagation, or achieve end-to-end control through costly offline pretraining before online fine-tuning can even begin. We address these challenges with a CUDA-based event simulator that exploits GPU parallelism to render events efficiently within the training loop, integrated into a differentiable simulation pipeline that enables direct gradient backpropagation through the differentiable physics model, improving sample efficiency. This allows us to train an end-to-end policy that maps event frames directly to control commands, without intermediate depth estimation. We validate our approach through zero-shot real-world deployment on a quadrotor, achieving robust obstacle avoidance in both odometry-assisted and odometry-free settings, including under low-light conditions where conventional cameras typically fail.

Selective Sliding Mode Control Enhances Robustness of Aerial Robots Under Disturbances

Anoop Kiran, Thales C. Silva, Nora Ayanian

原文摘要

Quadrotor control under disturbances such as wind gusts and payload variations remains challenging. First-order sliding mode control (SMC) and matched/unmatched uncertainty distinction are classical approaches; however, neither tells a practitioner which loops in a cascaded controller should be made robust to sustain disturbances, how to tune those loops, nor what the additional costs are on an embedded processor. Applying robust control uniformly across all axes addresses disturbances indiscriminately, adding tuning effort on axes where no disturbance acts. On inherently underactuated vehicles, disturbances along some axes cannot be opposed directly at all. We propose a principled methodology for deciding where robust control belongs in a cascaded architecture, with all control running onboard the vehicle. We recover the acting disturbance from PID hover flights under disturbance by inverting the equations of motion, use the recovered signal to identify and quantify the excited axes, and deploy robust control where it counts. Experiments on a Crazyflie 2.1 quadrotor under slung-payload and oblique-wind disturbances show tracking improvements concentrated on the axes the rule selects, and gain sweeps confirm that the switching gain reduces error on matched axes but has no effect on an excited unmatched axis, as the analysis predicts.

Inertial Steering and Motion Prediction of Tracked Vehicles on Low-Adherence Surfaces

Mathis Turgeon-Roy, Mohamed Ounally, Veronica Vannini, Olivier Roy, François Pomerleau

原文摘要

Tracked vehicles are widely used in off-road applications, but their conventional motion models often rely on no-slip assumptions that become inaccurate on low-adherence surfaces. Rather than treating inertial effects arising from slip as a disturbance to be minimized, this work investigates how inertial effects arising from a moving mass can be deliberately exploited for steering on low-friction surfaces. A dynamic model for an articulated tracked vehicle with a passive trailer is developed, allowing inertial effects from trailer motion to be captured. The approach is experimentally evaluated on ice, where our dynamic model outperforms the kinematic baseline. We also propose a mixed dynamic-kinematic model to adapt predictions to both surface and situation by exploiting predictions from both methods. Finally, we demonstrate inertial steering on a mono-track vehicle without a conventional steering mechanism, showing that controlled movements of an internal mass can generate turning motion on ice. The resulting behavior can be predicted using the proposed dynamic model by representing the internal mass as a frictionless trailer, revealing the analogous dynamics between the two configurations. These results demonstrate the feasibility of inertial steering as an alternative steering mechanism for tracked vehicles operating in low-adherence environments.

FlowS: One-Step Motion Prediction via Local Transport Conditioning

Leandro Di Bella, Adrian Munteanu, Bruno Cornelis

原文摘要

Generative motion prediction must satisfy three simultaneous requirements for real-world autonomy: high accuracy, diverse multimodal futures, and strictly bounded latency. Diffusion models meet the first two but violate the third, requiring tens to hundreds of denoising steps. We identify a conditioning strategy that resolves this tension: \textit{single-step integration is accurate when the underlying transport problem is local}. A model that must both discover the correct behavioral mode and traverse a long displacement in one step accumulates large discretization errors; conditioning the base distribution to lie near plausible futures reduces the problem to short-range refinement, the regime where a single Euler step suffices. We instantiate this \emph{local transport conditioning} in FlowS, a conditional flow matching framework with two mechanisms. First, an online, scene-conditioned learned prior emits $K$ calibrated anchor trajectories per agent, each already near a plausible future, converting mode discovery into local correction. Second, a step-consistent displacement field enforces semigroup self-consistency, guaranteeing that a single step inherits multi-step accuracy. Crucially, anchoring this field at learned priors along straight-line paths yields a {stable, low-variance} training target, unlike prior self-consistency methods that suffer from {high-variance bootstrap} signals on curved diffusion paths. On the Waymo Open Motion Dataset, FlowS achieves state-of-the-art Soft mAP {(0.4804) and mAP (0.4703) with ensemble at 75\,FPS} with single-step inference, demonstrating that local transport conditioning makes one-step generative motion prediction practical for safety-critical autonomy. Code and pretrained models will be released upon acceptance.

AtomTree: A Hierarchical Framework for State-Aware Embodied Instruction Following with LLMs

Haotian Zhai, Tianming Sha, Junnan Li

原文摘要

Embodied instruction following in interactive environments requires agents to interpret natural language commands and complete long-horizon tasks. Existing planners either rely on large labeled trajectories, or use few-shot and zero-shot LLM prompting that produces a whole plan in a single serial reasoning process. These approaches depend on linguistic common sense, commit to a plan from the initial instruction, and only update after failures, which weakens robustness and state awareness. We present AtomTree, a hierarchical framework for state-aware task planning with LLMs. AtomTree incrementally builds a tree of subgoals and actions, where the LLM decides at each step, from the current symbolic state, whether to further decompose or to output a grounded low-level action. A lightweight memory module summarizes past outcomes for reuse in later decisions. When a low-level action stalls, AtomTree triggers hierarchical backtracking replanning to return to the parent node and regenerate the subtree plan from the latest state, preventing continued drift along an incorrect trajectory. In zero-shot evaluation on the ALFRED benchmark, AtomTree outperforms prior LLM-based planners. Project page: https://zhaihaotian.github.io/atomtree-website/.

Value Function-Guided MPPI for Hierarchical Planning and Control in Off-Road Autonomous Navigation

Anoushka Alavilli, Raymond Song, Guanya Shi, Jeff Schneider

原文摘要

Autonomous navigation in off-road terrain is commonly achieved using hierarchical control and planning architectures that rely on explicit cost maps and one-way information flow from a high-level planner to a low-level controller, decoupling planning from the true execution cost experienced during control. We propose a hierarchical planning and control framework in which information flows bidirectionally, allowing the low-level controller to guide trajectory selection at the planning level. The highest level of the hierarchy is a Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) control-style planner that determines optimal trajectories and passes these waypoints to a pretrained low-level reinforcement learning (RL) controller. Rather than drawing from an explicit cost map, our MPPI planner leverages the value function of the RL controller as an implicit cost representation. In this formulation, MPPI serves as a trajectory exploration mechanism, while the low-level controller's value function guides the search. To account for the distribution shift seen by the value function between training and evaluation, we propose an online policy evaluation process that adapts the value function to unseen driving experiences, and we demonstrate this adaptation in unseen off-road simulation environments. We evaluate our approach in a high-fidelity off-road driving simulator across a range of challenging terrain conditions and compare its performance against a baseline MPPI controller. The results demonstrate that our method achieves safer and more effective navigation to goal locations while eliminating the need for explicit cost maps and enabling tighter coupling between planning and control.

Indirect Optimal Control for Constructing Libraries of Periodic Trajectories: Application to Bipedal Walking

Maximilian Raff, Kathrin Flaßkamp, C. David Remy

原文摘要

Trajectory optimization is a fundamental tool for generating efficient, dynamically consistent periodic motions, commonly referred to as gaits, in legged locomotion. This paper explores the indirect method of periodic trajectory optimization, emphasizing its application in creating optimal gaits for legged systems and contrasting it with the more common direct method. While the direct method offers implementation flexibility, it is limited by its need for an input space parameterization. In contrast, the indirect method achieves higher accuracy by computing the control input from states and costates along the optimal trajectory. In this work, we tackle the convergence challenges associated with indirect shooting methods by utilizing numerical continuation methods. This is particularly useful for the systematic development of gait libraries. Our contributions include: (1) the formalization of a general periodic trajectory optimization problem that extends existing first-order necessary conditions to a broader range of cost functions and operating conditions; (2) a methodology for efficiently generating optimal gait libraries using single shooting and numerical continuation; (3) a novel approach for reconstructing Lagrange multipliers and costates from passive gaits; (4) a comparative analysis of the indirect and direct shooting methods using a compass-gait walker as a case study, demonstrating the higher accuracy of the indirect method; and (5) demonstrating applicability to the more complex legged robot RABBIT, with ten dynamic states and four inputs. These results establish a systematic indirect optimal control framework for synthesizing families of optimal periodic trajectories in legged locomotion.

Quantize by Doing: Task-Guided Mixed-Precision Quantization of Vision-Language-Action Models

Jiuyi Xu, Xiao Hu, Meida Chen, Song Wang, Yang Ye, Yangming Shi

原文摘要

Post-training quantization (PTQ) reduces the memory footprint of vision-language-action (VLA) models, but lowering bit widths while maintaining task performance remains challenging. Existing work has used sensitivity estimates from calibration data to assign bit widths to different model components. However, using task success directly to guide mixed-precision allocation is underexplored because closed-loop evaluations are costly and the effect of quantizing one component depends on the precision of other components. To this end, we propose \textbf{QbD-VLA}, a task-guided mixed-precision quantization method that uses task success from short closed-loop evaluations to assign weight and activation bit widths while accounting for interactions between model components. Experiments covering four VLA models and all four LIBERO suites show strong task performance at average precisions of approximately 4 bits for weights and fewer than 6 bits for activations. On SIMPLER, the gain over uniform quantization is small. On a Franka Research 3 robot arm, simulation-selected allocations show no detected success-rate loss on X-VLA but fail on $π_{0.5}$. These findings support using task success to guide mixed-precision VLA quantization, while highlighting the need for real-world evaluation before deployment. Code is available at \href{https://github.com/jiuyixu25/QbD-VLA}{\texttt{github.com/jiuyixu25/QbD-VLA}}.

Safe and Fuel-Efficient Motion Planning for Lunar Propulsive Drones

Elena Wittemyer, Grace Gao

原文摘要

Propulsive drones are a promising new technology for generating high-resolution terrain models of the Moon. In future lunar missions, propulsive drones will complete a series of hops across the lunar surface while capturing images with downward-facing cameras. We present an autonomous motion planning framework that uses a vision-guided optimal control strategy for performing safe, efficient hops between specified waypoints. The drone plans parabolic hops between waypoints generated by a global-level planner; if a nominal waypoint is unsafe or unreachable, the drone then completes a diversion maneuver to safely land. To evaluate the validity of potential landing sites, we develop a custom semantic segmentation model for identifying obstacles from aerial images, and we introduce an approach for rapidly calculating reachable terrain. We then use model predictive control (MPC) to robustly track hop trajectories that guide the drone towards safe landing sites. We test the optimal hop planner in a high-fidelity lunar simulation environment. Our results demonstrate that our unified motion planning framework yields safe, fuel-efficient hop trajectories which can be tracked rapidly and with low error via MPC.

POD-RoPE: Rotary Position Encoding over Physical Observation Distributions for Embodied AI

原文摘要

Embodied perception requires positional representations that capture both physical geometry and the spatial and temporal extent of observations. We introduce POD-RoPE (Physical Observation Distribution RoPE), which represents token observation footprints as distributions over camera centers, viewing directions, and sampling times. Under independent sampling, expected rotations encode relative relationships between distributions; when each distribution collapses to a single address, the construction recovers pointwise RoPE. The same rotation statistics support Q/K matching and coherence-dependent V/O transformations, allowing observation geometry to guide both information selection and content aggregation. Per-token pre-aggregation avoids increasing sequence length or processing pairs of observation nodes. We evaluate POD-RoPE across four robot policy architectures, simulation and real-world manipulation, and complementary reconstruction, depth-estimation, and novel-view-synthesis tasks. Integrating POD-RoPE into Fast-WAM improves mean success from 91.83% to 92.88% across all 50 RoboTwin 2.0 tasks, and from 32.5% to 52.5% on two real-robot tasks on Sharpa North. Controlled reconstruction ablations support the contributions of distribution encoding and V/O transformations. In H20 model-block benchmarks, POD-RoPE achieves median forward-plus-backward speedups of $1.91\times$ over P-RoPE and $5.34\times$ over RayRoPE, with a median latency overhead of 17.4% over Standard RoPE. These results support physical observation distributions as an effective and computationally efficient basis for geometry-aware attention.

Explore Where It Matters: Targeted Exploration for Efficient Rover Adaptation

Jacob Levy, Arthur Bouton, Tristan D. Hassler, Hari Nayar, David Fridovich-Keil

原文摘要

Future planetary rovers will traverse steep, deformable terrain where slip, sinkage, and terrain deformation can threaten mobility. Although simulation can capture some wheel-soil effects, unmodeled deformable-terrain phenomena create sim-to-real gaps requiring deployment-time adaptation. Yet, rover operations leave little room for extensive trial-and-error. We introduce TERRA (Targeted Exploration for Reward-Relevant Adaptation), an online adaptation framework that efficiently seeks deployment data exposing task-relevant model errors and corrects them. TERRA adapts a simulation-trained world model with a reward-weighted prediction loss and trains a loss predictor to estimate where future performance-relevant errors are likely to occur, using this signal to guide exploration during MPC. In simulation, TERRA reaches approximately 90% slope-climbing success within five trials under severe out-of-distribution pretraining conditions, outperforming exploration baselines in reward, completion time, and energy to first success. On the ERNEST rover, TERRA recovers coordinated active-suspension locomotion on a deformable Mars-simulant slope within three to five real-world trials. The Reality Gap in Automated Driving Systems Testing: Landscape, Challenges, and Research Directions

Stefano Carlo Lambertenghi, Oliver Weissl, Johannes Betz, Andrea Stocco

原文摘要

Simulation is essential for testing automated driving systems (ADS), but discrepancies between simulation and reality can undermine testing conclusions. It remains unclear which discrepancies the literature addresses and what evidence supports correspondence claims. We present a systematic mapping of 235 primary studies that measure or mitigate the reality gap in ADS testing, selected from 4,195 publications. We characterise objectives, targets, approaches, experimental setups, and evaluation evidence. Our classification distinguishes simulated and real-world execution across six ADS test components, separately for each approach and its evaluation reference. This distinguishes real-world information used to construct an approach from evidence used to evaluate its claims. Of the included studies, 76% address mitigation, primarily targeting scenario and actor realism and perception, while 94% report validation or measurement procedures. Only 61 studies report metrics from multiple families covering sensor/perception correspondence, ADS behaviour, vehicle dynamics, or safety outcomes; this coverage does not establish causal links between discrepancies and test verdicts. The synthesis highlights that real-world content and physical execution must be interpreted against the claim evaluated. The findings motivate claim-specific evaluation and component-level reporting to establish which discrepancies affect testing conclusions and when simulation evidence supports conclusions about real-world ADS behaviour.

Understanding Temporal Semantic Stability in Open-Vocabulary UAV Perception through Metric 3D Fusion

Saurbh Singh Jamwal

原文摘要

Recent open-vocabulary segmentation models have significantly advanced semantic perception for UAVs, for aerial and remote-sensing imagery, yet predictions from moving platforms can remain temporally inconsistent across repeated observations of the same physical scene. While semantic segmentation is typically evaluated on single images, temporal reliability remains less explored despite its importance for long-horizon robotic perception. In this work, we investigate temporal semantic stability by associating frame-wise predictions with persistent world-space locations through metric 3D fusion. We introduce a voxel-level evaluation framework that jointly characterises final semantic agreement, Semantic Belief Drift (SBD), Observation Persistence (OP), and semantic uncertainty from accumulated evidence. Experiments on UAVid-3D-Scenes reveal substantial frame-wise semantic variation and show that high aggregate world-space agreement can overstate temporal stability when many locations have limited repeated-observation support. Persistence-stratified analysis shows that recurrent voxels expose substantially greater semantic disagreement, while higher-persistence voxels exhibit lower direct consecutive semantic-evidence divergence. This behaviour is observed across two segmentation backbones and remains consistent under variations in voxel resolution, geometric association, and temporal sampling density. Overall, conditions that reduce world-space recurrence can increase apparent aggregate stability, demonstrating that semantic consistency must be interpreted together with observation support. Our findings establish observation persistence as an essential conditioning variable for evaluating long-horizon semantic reliability and provide a framework for analysing temporal semantic behaviour beyond image-level prediction.

Who Is the Agent Talking To? Participant-Aware Role Switching for Embodied Student-Support Dialogue

原文摘要

We present RPO-PDT, an embodied conversational agent that adapts its conversational role to the current participant. It acts as a Per- sonal Development Tutor (PDT) when supporting students and as a simulated student when faculty rehearse tutoring strategies. Voluntary closed-set participant verification informs a confidence- controlled role manager: stable enrolled-faculty matches activate the Student role, while enrolled students and unmatched partici- pants use the default PDT role and uncertain observations cause no transition. The system combines Furhat interaction, Rasa or- chestration, institutional retrieval, safeguarding, and LLM-based generation. User control is preserved through manual role override, consent-based facial enrolment, temporary interaction identifiers, and explicit retention or deletion of enrolled profiles. The demon- stration exposes both role-switching behaviour and these privacy controls in interaction.

TRIM: Temporal Run-Time Monitoring of 3D Object Detection via Activation Statistics

Hakan Yekta Yatbaz, Konstantinos Koufos, Mehrdad Dianati

原文摘要

Reliable perception is essential to intelligent transportation systems, yet deep neural networks can silently miss safety-critical objects while continuing to produce apparently plausible outputs. Existing run-time monitors for 3D object detection generally assess each frame independently and therefore cannot exploit the temporal evolution of occlusion, point sparsity, and scene complexity. We present TRIM, a lightweight temporal monitor that detects missed-object failures without modifying or retraining the underlying detector. TRIM summarises intermediate activations using compact channel-wise statistics and processes short sequences of these summaries with a temporal convolutional network. Experiments on NuScenes show that temporal monitoring improves AUROC from 0.686 to 0.704 and reduces the false alarm rate at 95% recall from 0.818 to 0.759 compared with single-frame monitoring. Early and intermediate backbone features provide the strongest monitoring signal, while the temporal inference head requires only 0.159 ms on a CPU.

原文摘要

Smart wheelchairs are robotic devices that gather information from the surroundings and allow people to safely drive through various environments. They usually rely on the interpretation of high-level user's intentions, typically decoded through human-robot interface (HRI) or brain-machine interface (BMI). However, navigating in an unknown environment and accurately understanding user commands remain significant challenges. Misinterpretation of commands or the environment can lead to user frustration, distrust of the system, or even unsafe situations. In this paper, we present a novel Multi-Layer Navigation System (MLNS) for a smart wheelchair that enables navigation in unknown environments while interpreting and safely contextualizing user's intentions even in the case of limited and faulty commands. The stack relies on a Virtual Sensors-Driven Potential Fields (ViSPF) method for obstacle detection that accounts for the wheelchair's actual size, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) module for trajectory generation, and an open-vocabulary computer vision algorithm for target identification. Finally, a system based on Priority Queue (PQ) was implemented for target selection. We validated our system on a real smart wheelchair with experiments involving 10 participants without disabilities, including scenarios with faulty input interfaces. The results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of our system in real-world environments, proving its potential for practical applications in assistive technologies.

Influence of Agent Number and Behavior on Users' Psychological Responses in VR Evacuation Training

Naoki Matsumura, Kensuke Sugihara, Tomoko Yonezawa

原文摘要

This study aims to build effective drill software by combining a virtual simulation of a disaster with multiple agents capable of expressing emotions. We evaluated how the number of agents and their emotional and behavioral actions during evacuation influence users in a virtual space. The results showed that users tended to act more confidently when many agents evacuated with them, and that the evacuation route chosen by the agents influenced the users' decision-making. These findings indicate that users' evacuation behavior is shaped not only by the environment itself but also by the collective behavior of surrounding agents, underscoring the need to consider how agent behavior affects users' psychological states during training.
