Weight-Space Programming for Improving Image-Restoration Diffusion Models: Technical Conjectures and a Recursive Improvement Loop

Zhuoran Zheng, Doubao

原文摘要

Can an LLM directly edit the weights of a diffusion-based image-restoration model to \emph{improve} restoration quality---without gradients, paired data, or fine-tuning? Recent experiments show frontier LLMs can fix structural bugs by modifying as little as \(0.016\%\) of parameters, but cannot instill new capabilities. We ask whether weight-space programming (WSP) can move from \emph{debugging} to \emph{improvement} in the precise-regression setting of image restoration (deblurring, super-resolution, denoising, inpainting). Restoration diffusion UNets present a middle ground: low-level signal-processing layers are concentrated enough for targeted weight-direction edits, while high-level semantic layers remain distributed and resistant to sparse modification. We propose three technical conjectures: (C1) an LLM can localize the layer behind a quality gap (over-smoothing, color shift, hallucinated texture) within a 200 forward-pass budget; (C2) editing a small set of identified weight directions (e.g., scaling high-frequency filter norms, correcting output-bias channels) can measurably improve PSNR and perceptual quality; (C3) a recursive loop---diagnose \(\rightarrow\) edit \(\rightarrow\) evaluate \(\rightarrow\) re-diagnose---can compound gains across rounds, forming a minimal recursive self-improvement (RSI) loop for vision. We analyze the required AI capability (arguing targeted edits need not superintelligence, while general capability generation does) and detail the challenges of precise pixel-level regression. We provide a PyTorch-style deployment pipeline and outline a benchmark. This manuscript is conjectural, intended to open a new subtopic for image restoration.

Reliability Stress Testing of RAG Retrieval under Query-Relevant Corpus Poisoning

Janet Sung, Kainan Zhou, Gangzhen Qian, Hang Xiao, Lu Yi

原文摘要

External text can affect a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system only after the retriever admits it to the model context. We stress this admission step while varying document content, attacker query information, per-target poison budget, and contamination scope. Across 623 Benchmarking Information Retrieval (BEIR) queries from SciFact and NFCorpus, five query-targeted documents per query reduce classical-retriever nDCG@10 by 40.2-61.5% in isolated-target stress. Full-query anchoring explains most Best Matching 25 (BM25) degradation, whereas appended text also shifts latent semantic analysis (LSA) and Hybrid rankings. A pretrained BGE-small validation reaches 100% target exposure for query-only P=5 on both datasets; adding the injection payload changes SciFact nDCG only from 0.269 to 0.271 and lowers NFCorpus exposure slightly to 98.8%, indicating that query anchoring remains the dominant retrieval-side factor for this dense model. Query length materially changes the interpretation of partial-information attacks: on 162 long SciFact queries, two random terms cover 19.9% of eligible terms and still yield 39.5% Hybrid target exposure. Multi-target contamination adds cross-target interference. Overlap-based admission can remove full-query poisons but may sharply reduce clean retrieval utility, and maximal marginal relevance (MMR) leaves exposure unchanged under the tested configuration. The study measures retrieval-layer failures, not downstream instruction following.

Sketch-Omni: Instance-Level Sketch-Based Visual Prompting for Perception MLLMs

Dongyu Wang, Dar-Yen Chen, Zhiming Hong, Arkaprabha Basu, Yi-Zhe Song

原文摘要

Promptable perception, from GroundingDINO to Rex-Omni, puts one model behind one prompt interface and returns coordinates for any localisation task. Every model in that line was built for photographs; none has been given a sketch. We present Sketch-Omni, to our knowledge the first perception MLLM built to work on sketches and from them. On a sketch, the sketch is the image, and text prompts detect, point, resolve object and spatial referring expressions, and ground affordances in it. From a sketch, the sketch is the prompt, and a drawing of one object localises that object in a photograph, even among several of the same category, a query that neither a category name nor a photo exemplar can pose. Two obstacles stand in the way. A photo-trained model's attention is tuned to colour and texture, which a sketch does not have, and no dataset pairs a drawing with the one instance it depicts among others of its kind. We build the training data instead of collecting it. An edge detector turns every labelled photograph into a sketch-like drawing that keeps the photograph's labels, and two constructions produce sketch-to-photo instance pairs from existing data. On top of this, photo-guided relation alignment passes each photograph and its edge sketch through the same model and trains the sketch pass to reproduce how the photograph pass relates phrases to patches and patches to each other. Not one training label is drawn by hand. Sketch-Omni reaches 91.4 F1 on sketch-prompted localisation against 81.8 for the strongest general-purpose MLLM, with a lead that doubles when the photograph holds several instances of the queried category, and it is best in 39 of 40 evaluation cells across six tasks. Code, model, and a hand-annotated benchmark of 2754 sketch-to-photo links will be released.

Neologism Inoculation Prompting

David Demitri Africa, Cameron Holmes

原文摘要

Inoculation prompting is a method to reduce undesired behaviours such as reward hacking in frontier models. It works by training a model on harmful examples under a prompt that specifies the undesired behaviour, which reduces the model's tendency to exhibit it unless prompted. However, the inoculation prompt is written in plain English, so any user can re-elicit the behaviour easily. We introduce neologism inoculation prompting (NIP), which replaces the English prompt with a new token that is trained on the frozen model and removed at deployment. NIP outperforms other inoculation methods, and performs competitively with gradient routing despite being simpler. It also works on reward hacking, but fails on sycophancy and harassment. Using control tokens and analyses of activations, we identify the mechanism for this as NIP hiding the harmful behaviour behind an unreachable region of model inputs, rather than deleting it. More broadly, our work suggests that neologisms can be a powerful way to carve out and shape access to behaviours that are undesired or harmful.

On the average-case complexity landscape for Tensor-Isomorphism-complete problems over finite fields

Tiange Li, Yinan Li, Youming Qiao, Dacheng Tao, Yingjie Wang

原文摘要

In Grochow and Qiao (\emph{SIAM J. Comput.}, 2023), the complexity class Tensor Isomorphism (TI) was introduced and isomorphism problems for groups, algebras, and polynomials were shown to be TI-complete. In this paper, we study average-case algorithms for several TI-complete problems over finite fields, including algebra isomorphism, matrix code conjugacy, and $4$-tensor isomorphism. Our main results reveal a rich landscape of average-case complexities of Tensor Isomorphism problems, despite their equivalence in the worst-case setting. Over the finite field of order $q$, we devise (1) average-case \emph{polynomial-time} algorithms for algebra isomorphism and matrix code conjugacy that succeed for $1/Θ(q)$ fraction of inputs; (2) an average-case \emph{polynomial-time} algorithm for the $4$-tensor isomorphism that succeeds for $1/q^{Θ(1)}$ fraction of inputs; and (3) an average-case \emph{polynomial-time} algorithm for the orthogonal $3$-tensor isomorphism that succeed for $1-1/\poly(n)$ fraction of $n\times n\times n$ tensors. Our main technical contribution is to introduce the spectral properties of random matrices into algorithms for TI-complete problems. This leads to not only new algorithms but also new questions in random matrix theory over finite fields. To settle these questions, we need to extend both the generating function approach as in Neumann and Praeger (\emph{J. London Math. Soc.}, 1998) and the character sum method of Gorodetsky and Rodgers (\emph{Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.}, 2021).

Answer Correction with Verifiable Rewards: A Gemma-Family Study of Multi-View Driving QA

T N Rickesh, Pranav Vinodh, Sowmya Kamath S

原文摘要

Multi-camera driving question answering provides a discrete test of vision-language models, but post-training gains can reflect changed selected answers or improved answer extraction. We investigate this distinction within the Gemma model family using archived, task-linked WaymoQA evaluations. A zero-shot diagnostic on 5,519 test questions spans effective-small, mixture-of-experts, unified, and dense checkpoints, with serving differences disclosed rather than interpreted as architecture effects. The strongest controlled evidence is a matched-harness Gemma-4-12B base/GRPO pair: accuracy rises from 73.78% to 75.43%, a gain of 1.65 percentage points with a scene-cluster bootstrap interval of [+0.84, +2.41]. There are 215 improvements and 124 regressions; 213 improvements start from an extractable but incorrect base answer, and only two recover previously unextractable responses. Crossing correctness with extraction state shows why correct noncompliant outputs cannot be counted as prediction errors. Category counts reveal a critical safety asymmetry: routine perception gains (+5.93 pp) mask a regression in safety-critical hazard prediction (-1.82 pp), demonstrating that unweighted outcome rewards can trade off rare edge cases for aggregate accuracy. Reward saturation describes sampled training dynamics rather than an architectural ceiling. A separate archived Gemma-31B thinking comparison yields no detected average improvement, with uncertainty that does not establish equivalence. These results support a modest answer-selection gain for the recorded tuning configuration and a reproducible diagnostic accounting, without attributing corrected labels to specific grounding mechanisms or claiming superiority over matched supervised tuning.

ReuseGR: Offline--Online Decoupled Generative Retrieval via Adaptive Prefix Reuse

Xujing Wang, Yufeng Chen, Boxuan Zhang, Chao Wei, Cai Xu, Jie Zhao, Weiru Zhang, Wei Zhao 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Larger generative retrieval models can improve retrieval quality, but their decoding cost makes low-latency serving difficult. When different users submit the same query, generating complete Semantic IDs (SIDs) for every request repeats computation, while their interaction histories call for different results. The challenge is to reuse large-model computation across requests while keeping retrieval personalized. We propose \textbf{ReuseGR}, which separates query-level candidate planning from request-level personalized completion. A 7B offline planner generates SID prefix sets shared across requests with the same query. A 0.5B online model uses each request's history to select prefixes and generate the remaining tokens. ReuseCut chooses a cache depth for each query based on historical coverage, balancing computation reuse and candidate coverage. To strengthen online completion, we transfer 7B suffix-scoring knowledge to 0.5B through path-level knowledge distillation (Path KD). BudgetCut then selects scored branches to improve final top-100 recall under a fixed branch budget. Its selection policy is initialized by on-policy distillation (OPD) and refined through group-relative policy optimization (GRPO). On an industrial search-advertising dataset with approximately 2M query--item records and 3.38M catalog items, ReuseGR improves query-level HR@100 by 3.83 percentage points and reduces mean online latency by 38.9\% relative to an all-online 0.5B baseline when prefixes are prepared. It achieves HR@100 comparable to an all-online 7B baseline with 57.7\% lower online latency. A 14-day user-level online A/B test against the 0.5B baseline shows relative gains of 0.93\% in click-through rate and 1.05\% in revenue per thousand requests.

DeSyR: A decoupled symbolic recovery framework for PDEs with PINN-guided structure discovery and physics-based coefficient refinement

Pancheng Niu, Jun Guo, Qiaolin He, Jingcai Guo, Yanchao Shi

原文摘要

Recovering explicit symbolic solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs) from physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) is attractive, yet selecting and fitting expressions against neural predictions can lock the recovered solution into the teacher's approximation error. We propose DeSyR (Decoupled Symbolic Recovery) to break this dependence. DeSyR uses PINNs only to discover candidate structures and initial coefficient estimates; once a structure is fixed, the governing equations and constraints alone determine the refined coefficients. Multiple candidates with different fitting-error--complexity trade-offs are retained, evaluated after physics-only refinement, and reduced to the simplest expression within a physically near-optimal set. Joint refinement extends the same principle to coupled fields. For fixed candidate parameterizations, affine error identities and local nonlinear analysis show how teacher errors enter fitted coefficients and establish conditions under which physical residuals control coefficient and solution errors. Across seven benchmarks covering scalar evolution equations, multidimensional elliptic problems and coupled incompressible flows, DeSyR attains mean relative solution errors on the order of $10^{-14}$ or smaller and lower reported mean physical residuals than PINNs, physics-informed symbolic networks and teacher-fitted symbolic distillation. With the expression structure held fixed, estimating coefficients from physical constraints further yields more accurate frequency estimates and solutions than fitting teacher predictions. DeSyR therefore turns neural approximations into guides for structure discovery, while physical constraints determine the final explicit solution.

ProGeo-RC: Prototype-guided Semantic Reliability and Geometric Error Calibration for Semi-supervised Cardiac Image Segmentation

Yunfei Zhu, Wenfeng Zhang, Pan Zeng, Xin Huang, Tao Jia, Weiting Shao, Wei Hu, Jianming Hu

原文摘要

Semi-supervised medical image segmentation aims to train reliable segmentation models using limited labeled data and abundant unlabeled data. However, existing methods typically rely on prediction confidence or model consistency to estimate pseudo-label reliability, but these criteria are insufficient to characterize both semantic reliability and geometric plausibility. To address this issue, we propose ProGeo-RC, a prototype-guided semantic reliability and geometric error calibration framework for semi-supervised medical image segmentation. ProGeo-RC consists of two key modules: Prototype-guided Semantic Reliability Estimation (PSRE) and Structured Semantic-Geometric Error Calibration (S-SGEC). PSRE uses probabilistic class prototypes to estimate the semantic reliability of unlabeled predictions and calibrate pixel-wise teacher pseudo labels, while S-SGEC introduces signed-distance-field-based geometric constraints to refine ambiguous boundaries and suppress spurious foreground responses outside target structures. Experiments on the ACDC and MVAA-CT datasets show that ProGeo-RC achieves better performance compared with representative semi-supervised segmentation methods. Under the 10\% labeled setting on ACDC, ProGeo-RC improves DSC and Jaccard by 0.37\% and 0.49\% over the corresponding second-best results, while reducing 95HD and ASD by 0.61 and 0.21, respectively. These results indicate that joint semantic reliability estimation and geometric error calibration can provide more reliable pseudo supervision for semi-supervised medical image segmentation.

Safe Actions Alone Do Not Ensure Safe Agents: Identifying Unfulfilled Obligations with Guard Models

Youwei Feng, Yitong Zhang, Yuetong Liu, Jia Li

原文摘要

Guard models are increasingly used to safeguard LLM-based agents, primarily by identifying actions that agents are forbidden to perform. However, identifying forbidden actions alone is insufficient to ensure agent safety. In this paper, we argue that agent safety also depends on identifying required yet unperformed safety-critical actions, which we call obligations. Our preliminary study on a popular benchmark for evaluating safety shows that 56.92% of GLM-5.3 trajectories contain unfulfilled obligations, compared with only 30.00% containing forbidden actions. This finding reveals unfulfilled obligations as a major and previously overlooked source of safety risk. However, to our knowledge, no existing benchmark evaluates whether guard models can identify these obligations. To close this gap, we introduce ObligationBench, the first benchmark for evaluating the capability of obligation identification, comprising 240 expert-validated trajectories covering issue resolution, feature development, and terminal operations. Our evaluation of 14 representative models reveals substantial limitations: the highest recall and exact-match rate are only 48.97% and 10.00%, respectively. To address these limitations, we develop ObligationGuard using 40,000 synthetic training examples. ObligationGuard achieves 57.52% recall and an exact-match rate of 21.67%, surpassing all evaluated models on both metrics. We call on the community to incorporate obligation identification into the design and evaluation of future guard models to improve agent safety.

OmniST: Topology-Invariant Spatiotemporal Forecasting with Guaranteed-Coverage Uncertainty at Unseen Sensor Locations

Praveg Vashishtha

原文摘要

Standard spatiotemporal graph convolutional networks need a fixed-size adjacency matrix, coupling model weights to a specific sensor count N; they cannot produce any output at a sensor absent from training. We present OmniST, a topology-invariant forecaster whose computation has zero structural dependency on the number of nodes, and which, composed with inductive split-conformal calibration, gives distribution-free, coverage-guaranteed prediction intervals at arbitrary (including never-seen) sensor locations, preserving that guarantee as sensors are added or removed. Topology invariance follows from coordinate-based tokenization, k-nearest-neighbor attention from geographic coordinates at each forward pass, and per-node temporal processing via a bidirectional GRU. On real Delhi air-quality data (37 stations, 2019-2023), OmniST attains a 30-day PM2.5 MAE of 31.0 ug/m3 and degrades at most 1.1 percent when 40 percent of stations are removed. Its inductive forecasts at unseen stations beat nearest-neighbor interpolation (about 12 percent) and a learned kriging GNN (IGNNK, about 21 percent), and, unlike either, carry a finite-sample coverage guarantee. The guarantee holds at 90 percent or above under 30-50 percent node dropout across four real datasets over three domains (Delhi and Beijing air quality, NOAA GHCN weather, Caltrans PeMSD7-M traffic), and still holds at 325 real sensors (full PeMS-BAY). We also fix a temporal-drift failure: static conformal under-covers over time (about 0.50 late), but a rolling adaptive-conformal estimator restores target coverage (0.89 overall, 0.96 late) at the cost of wider intervals.

ActOR: Ambient AI-Based Agentic Orchestration for Humanoid Autonomy in Operating Rooms

Han Zhang, Sicheng Lu, Aleks Santari, Jeffrey K. Jopling, Masaru Ishii, Mathias Unberath

原文摘要

Operating rooms (ORs) increasingly contain ambient sensing infrastructure to enable AI-based optimization of workflows and utilization. We pursue an alternative path: using ambient AI to guide robot action and optimize utilization. Deploying humanoids in the OR without ambient AI is severely limited by cumbersome de novo orientation and planning due to partial onboard observations. We posit that this can be achieved by coupling an ambient AI-based agentic orchestrator with the humanoid robotic actor, providing shared perception and execution feedback for humanoid autonomy in the OR. ActOR fuses a wall-mounted ambient camera and the robot's head-mounted camera into a shared object-level digital twin (DT). A large language model agent plans over the DT using pre-programmed locomotion and manipulation skills without task-specific training. During execution, DT updates and execution outcomes inform retries, alternative approaches, or replanning. We evaluated ActOR in simulated and physical environments. Across three tasks in two simulated ORs reconstructed from real rooms, ambient perception reduced exploration from 1.05 to 0.12 Explore calls per trial when targets were initially outside the robot's view. Closed-loop feedback increased success from 46.7% to 83.3% under nominal execution and from 8.3% to 51.7% under injected navigation, object-relocation, and grasp perturbations. In a physical mock OR with a humanoid, ActOR completed 14 of 20 single-object disposal trials and demonstrated replanning after scene changes. Ambient AI-based observations provide scene state that improves robot action planning, increasing success and reducing exploration compared with robot-only observations. Feeding skill outcomes and DT updates back to the planner improves multi-step task success. Our results show the feasibility of humanoid task autonomy for multi-step disposal tasks in a mock OR.

P-SER: Physical Consistency-Constrained Scattering Expandable Representation for Class-Incremental HRRP Target Recognition

Fangyi Wang, Peng Zhao, Haipeng Wang

原文摘要

High-resolution range profiles (HRRPs) provide compact radar target representations but exhibit strong aspect sensitivity, complicating class-incremental recognition when historical data are unavailable. Changes in viewing aspect shift scattering-peak locations and amplitudes, while reflector groups may produce responses resembling ships. Existing dynamic expansion methods can also incur substantial parameter and memory overhead. To address these challenges, we propose P-SER, a Physical Consistency-Constrained Scattering Expandable Representation framework for exemplar-free class-incremental HRRP recognition. P-SER reconstructs dominant scattering points from complex-valued sum- and azimuth-difference-channel HRRPs and observation geometry. The reconstructed spatial structure, target extent, and energy distribution are used to derive class-level scattering prototypes and sample-level saliency priors, providing physically grounded constraints for feature learning and old-class knowledge retention. A primitive scatterer dictionary further characterizes local strong-scattering mechanisms and calibrates uncertain ship--reflector predictions at inference. Meanwhile, lightweight residual adapters are incrementally introduced into a shared HRRP backbone to learn new classes with limited model growth. Experiments on simulated and measured HRRP datasets show that P-SER delivers competitive recognition performance without retaining old-class exemplars, while maintaining physical consistency, interference robustness, knowledge retention, and model scalability.

Dexterous Robot Manipulation from Human Demonstrations via Contact-Anchored Retargeting and Residual Policy Learning

Zihao Yang, Chengyuan Liu, Yu Zhou, Runze Lv, Tianyu Cui, Sheng Yi, Haohua Zhu, Irvine Lu 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Learning dexterous manipulation from demonstrations is bottlenecked by data: the contact forces that determine whether a grasp succeeds are absent from every scalable source of human demonstrations. This paper builds on two observations. First, what survives the change from a human hand to a robot hand is the contact structure of a demonstration - which finger regions touch which object locations, and in what order - rather than its joint motion. Second, physical consistency need not be engineered per task: a single residual reinforcement learning (RL) policy, trained once across diverse demonstrations, can repair kinematic recordings into physically consistent, contact-annotated trajectories, and the same residual formulation restores dynamic feasibility after retargeting. These observations yield a three-stage pipeline that converts human motion-capture recordings into dexterous robot policies with no real-robot training data: physics refinement with a simulated MANO hand recovers contacts and forces, contact-anchored retargeting transfers the demonstrated contact structure through an objective independent of hand morphology, and residual policy learning adapts the result to robot actuation. The pipeline reconstructs 25,454 single-hand trajectories (success 7.3% -> 59.3%) and 25 dual-hand tasks (16.0% -> 62.4%) with one shared policy per setting, transfers one human dataset to four morphologically distinct robot hands (+62.4 pp), and executes four contact-rich bimanual tasks on physical hardware with zero real-robot training data.

Attack-Aware Intrusion Risk Monitoring for Aerial Surveillance via Probabilistic Signal Temporal Logic

Xinhao Yan, Kenji Kashima, Bo Chen, Hailong Huang

原文摘要

This paper considers online intrusion-risk assessment and graded warning for unmanned aerial vehicles under bounded measurement attacks. To address this problem, we develop a monitoring framework that combines trusted state estimation, attack-aware risk assessment, and probabilistic signal temporal logic (PrSTL). Trusted observations support recursive state estimation, while potentially attacked observations inform integrity testing and intrusion-risk assessment. The key contribution is a confidence-set construction that combines normalized innovation statistics with physical attack bounds to characterize admissible measurement biases. The resulting family of bias-corrected Gaussian posteriors yields an upper bound on the probability of occupying a no-fly zone or its surrounding safety margin. Confidence guarantees and finite-cover numerical certificates quantify the reliability of this risk envelope, which is evaluated with or without an integrity alarm. The PrSTL monitor analyzes the resulting risk sequence to distinguish ordered, persistent, and repeated risk and produces graded warnings with explicit robustness margins and supporting windows. We validate the monitor in flight experiments with a Crazyflie quadrotor tracked by a Vicon motion capture system. Controlled comparisons quantify the contributions of individual monitoring components. Prescribed risk profiles verify the temporal semantics and illustrate how distinct risk patterns produce different warning levels.

DeepThink: A Conceptual Model for Knowledge-Addressable Recurrent Language Modeling

Weiguo Chen

原文摘要

This manuscript presents DeepThink, a knowledge-addressable framework for recurrent language modeling. A Knowledge Bank stores typed Knowledge Units, a Knowledge Activator selects units from the current execution state, Knowledge Assembly produces an executable configuration, and a Shared Thinking Operator updates that state. An output stage then organizes generation. This organization exposes knowledge capacity, activation width, and recurrent depth as separate design variables, supporting both complete parameter packages and fine-grained expert or low-rank modules. We formalize the interfaces and their execution semantics, including state-dependent selection, parameter-space assembly, and thinking followed by generation. For compatible templates and complete runtime-state configurations, we establish an exact Fixed-Schedule Realization of an existing fixed-depth model. Exact shared-base reparameterization and pretrained output-tail reuse provide complementary initialization constructions. Together, these results define a route from pretrained models to dynamically selected and assembled recurrent computation. A synthesis of conditional computation, recurrent models, modular parameters, and knowledge interfaces positions DeepThink within the research landscape and identifies the design questions arising from their integration.

ToPA: Block-wise Toeplitz Adaptation for Expressive and Efficient Fine-Tuning

Sicong Li, Qianqian Xu, Zhiyong Yang, Zitai Wang, Longtao Huang, Xiaochun Cao, Qingming Huang

原文摘要

Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) has emerged as a prevalent strategy for adapting large pre-trained models. Among PEFT techniques, reparameterization-based methods, particularly those that employ low-rank or sparsity structures, have attracted significant attention. However, these approaches often underperform full fine-tuning. Specifically, low-rank methods constrain the update rank, which is misaligned with the inherently high-rank nature of full fine-tuning. In contrast, sparsity-based techniques limit the flexibility of the parameter space and compromise connectivity across weights. To overcome these limitations, we explore the use of Toeplitz matrices, whose entries are constant along each diagonal, therefore providing a compact parameterization without imposing explicit rank or sparsity constraints. A straightforward approach is to update weights via a product of Toeplitz matrices. However, similar to RNNs, long multiplicative chains often lead to gradient instability. To address this issue, we propose \textbf{ToPA}, a more refined version of this idea that replaces standard Toeplitz matrices with block-wise Toeplitz, greatly increasing each factor's capacity and shortening the chain, thereby stabilizing training and improving expressiveness. We theoretically show that products of block-wise Toeplitz matrices can approximate arbitrary matrices under shorter chain length, justifying the structural design of ToPA. Furthermore, we demonstrate that ToPA offers greater expressivity than existing low-rank and sparse parameterizations. Empirical evaluations across 21 NLP and CV datasets, spanning 5 model architectures, consistently validate the effectiveness of ToPA.

Single-or-Sample: Online Fair Allocation for Combinatorial Agents

Shuchi Chawla, Zhiyi Huang, Pooja Kulkarni, Ruta Mehta, Parnian Shahkar

原文摘要

We study the fair allocation of $m$ indivisible goods among $n$ heterogeneous agents arriving online, under maximin share (MMS) fairness. The key challenge lies in making allocation decisions in an adversarial setting without knowing future agents' valuations. No guarantees were known prior to our work in adversarial settings. Our main positive result is an online allocation algorithm for submodular agents that with probability at least $0.4$ guarantees a $1/24$-approximation to MMS to all agents simultaneously. Our algorithm intersperses a greedy-style adaptive sampling-without-replacement protocol with single-good reduction rounds. For XOS valuations, we adapt this single-or-sample approach to guarantee a $c$-MMS for all agents simultaneously with probability $1-O(c)$ for any parameter $c\in O(1/\log n)$. A key technical contribution of our work is in establishing Chernoff-style tail bounds on item allocation events for this adaptive sampling process despite strong positive correlations among the items, a result that may be of independent interest. The approximation versus success probability tradeoffs achieved by our algorithms are asymptotically tight. We show that even for binary additive valuations, no randomized algorithm can ensure $c$-MMS to all agents with probability exceeding $(1-c^2/5)$, for any $c\in (0,1]$. For XOS valuations, stronger lower bounds hold: no randomized algorithm can ensure $c$-MMS to all agents with probability exceeding $(1-c/3)$, for any $c\in (0,1]$. Furthermore, no algorithm can achieve $ω(1/\log \log n)$-MMS with any constant probability. All our lower bounds hold even for simple binary instances whose MMS values and MMS partitions can be computed in linear time.

What Should a Navigator Remember? Spatiotemporal Memory for Zero-Shot Vision-Language Navigation

Yuhang Peng, Zhikai Wang, Ziyi Wang, Jiaru Zhong, Xiaoji Zheng, Jingzhi Huang, Yi Wang, Jiangtao Gong

原文摘要

Zero-shot vision-and-language navigation (VLN) requires an agent to use past observations without navigation-specific training. We study what information an 8B-scale navigation system should retain and how it should be organized for subsequent decisions. Our agent combines instruction progress, hierarchically compressed observation history anchored to poses, and accumulated geometry in complementary task, temporal, and spatial memories. An 8B observer summarizes observations, and an 8B reasoner uses the memories to select waypoint intents or request additional views, a geometric controller executes the selected targets. A semantic information perspective motivates the distinction between retaining evidence, making it accessible to the reasoner, and acquiring further observations. On R2R-CE val-unseen, the complete system achieves the highest among the evaluated Qwen3-based zero-shot baselines. Removing temporal memory reduces SR and sharply increases average path length from 16.9 to 39.1m, removing the spatial-map and planning component reduces SR as well. Real-world experiments on a Unitree Go2 show that our zero-shot method achieves higher success rates than the post-trained baseline in both corridor and office environments, suggesting better transfer to the evaluated real-world settings. As a complementary evaluation, LAW2 uses paired instruction interventions to examine behavioral responses, instruction following ability beyond endpoint success. These results support preserving task progress, observation history, and geometry in structured memory for zero-shot navigation with smaller open models.

原文摘要

Understanding what kind of prompts users typically ask and how well an LLM performs on these prompt categories is crucial for LLM practitioners. The existing methods satisfy the demand by hierarchically clustering the user prompts and synthesizing the cluster names using an LLM to build a taxonomy. However, the cluster names from these methods are usually too general for humans to understand the detailed prompt distributions and identify the exact strengths and weaknesses of LLMs. In this study, we propose COMPREHEND, which automatically constructs an ultra-fine-grained entailment hierarchy for the prompts. The entailment hierarchy replaces the cluster names in the taxonomy with sentences to provide more precise cluster descriptions for more fine-grained categorization. Compared with EvalTree, a state-of-the-art taxonomy construction method, COMPREHEND improves an entailment/faithfulness metric from 22.6 to 41.7 and an informative metric from 16.3 to 39.1 in WildBench. Our experiments also show that the weakness report generated based on our entailment hierarchy is much more informative than EvalTree in terms of predicting the response scores in the benchmark. All the code is released in https://github.com/JackNapier20/COMPREHEND_public.

原文摘要

Recent advances in model architectures, compute, and data scale have driven rapid progress in video generation, producing increasingly realistic content. Yet, no prior method systematically measures how faithfully these systems render human bodies and motion dynamics. In this paper, we present HumanScore, a systematic framework to evaluate the quality of human motions in AI-generated videos. HumanScore defines six interpretable metrics spanning kinematic plausibility, temporal stability, and biomechanical consistency, enabling fine-grained diagnosis beyond visual realism alone. Through carefully designed prompts, we elicit a diverse set of movements at varying intensities and evaluate videos generated by thirteen state-of-the-art models. Our analysis reveals consistent gaps between perceptual plausibility and motion biomechanical fidelity, identifies recurrent failure modes (e.g., temporal jitter, anatomically implausible poses, and motion drift), and produces robust model rankings from quantitative and physically meaningful criteria.

Navigating Runtime Dynamism in Semantic Query Serving

Hengrui Zhang, Xupeng Miao

原文摘要

LLM-powered semantic queries increasingly combine relational processing with multiple LLM-based operators over unstructured data. Efficiently serving such queries is challenging due to runtime dynamism at two coupled levels. Across queries, dynamic arrivals and heterogeneous resource demands continuously change scheduling priorities. Within a query, heterogeneous characteristics across fine-grained input batches cause operator costs and selectivities to vary throughout execution, making a statically optimized plan unreliable. These two forms of dynamism create a circular dependency: inter-query scheduling requires estimates of remaining LLM work, while the remaining work depends on runtime plan choices whose costs become observable only during execution. We present SeqoFlow, a runtime framework that jointly adapts query plans and schedules concurrent semantic queries. SeqoFlow enumerates equivalence-preserving plan alternatives under operator dependencies and decomposes queries into fine-grained units, enabling safe plan adaptation and query preemption at batch boundaries. To support both decisions without exhaustively profiling candidate plans on the target LLM, SeqoFlow uses lightweight speculative estimation to capture runtime costs. These estimates jointly guide plan adaptation and inter-query scheduling, closing the loop between query optimization and LLM inference. Experiments across diverse query structures, data distributions, and arrival rates show that SeqoFlow substantially reduces end-to-end latency compared to existing semantic query systems, adaptive query processing techniques, and conventional scheduling policies.

原文摘要

We present new results on polyomino nets that fold into four or five distinct boxes. With the help of AI, we first found examples with areas 532 and 2128, respectively. We analyze these examples and reduce their areas to 178 and 358, respectively. We also generalize the construction of the five-box net and show that infinitely many polyomino nets fold into five distinct boxes.

Rigorous Low-Degree Implications for Planted Subgraph Detection: Noise and Treewidth

Xuan Chen, Shuangping Li

原文摘要

The low-degree method predicts computational thresholds by asking whether low-degree polynomials can distinguish a planted distribution from a null one. Recent counterexamples by Buhai, Hsieh, Jain, and Kothari (FOCS 2025) and Mao (2026) show that low-degree indistinguishability does not, in general, rule out efficient algorithms, even on noisy inputs. Hsieh, Kane, Kothari, Li, Mohanty, and Tiegel (STOC 2026) asked what it does imply, and showed that for permutation-invariant distributions on $\{0,1\}^n$, low-degree indistinguishability from the uniform distribution implies statistical indistinguishability after noise. In this work, we study the same question for planted subgraphs in sparse random graphs. Let $Q_n=G(n,c/n)$, and let $P_n$ be obtained by planting a uniformly random copy of a deterministic graph $Γ_n$ into an independent sample from $Q_n$. In the supercritical regime $c>1$, we show that if $P_n$ is degree-$D_n$ indistinguishable from $Q_n$ and the treewidth of $Γ_n$ is $o(D_n/\log n)$, then a noisy version of $P_n$ is asymptotically indistinguishable from $Q_n$. In the critical and subcritical regimes $0<c\le 1$, we obtain the same conclusion without any treewidth assumption, provided $D_n=ω(\log n)$. Our proof has two main ingredients. First, we identify the subgraph-count and automorphism factors in the Fourier expansion with counts of isomorphism triples. Second, we cut a tree decomposition of $Γ_n$ into subtrees, which splits each large Fourier support into low-degree pieces that meet at only a few interface vertices, and we use noise to absorb the cost of reassembling them. At and below criticality, we use the low-degree assumption to rule out short cycles and noise to destroy the remaining long ones.

CounterSketch: Physics-Grounded Counterfactual Reasoning for Sketch-to-Video Generation

Hien Trinh, Tan-Hiep To, Dinh-Khoi Vo, Tam V. Nguyen, Minh-Triet Tran, Trung-Nghia Le

原文摘要

Counterfactual sketch animation explores how a static sketch evolves under a hypothetical intervention. We present CounterSketch, a physics-grounded framework that transforms natural-language ``What if...?'' queries into physically plausible sketch animations. The framework integrates VLM-guided scene grounding, causal event-chain reasoning, constraint-based trajectory generation, and verification. It models physical transitions to update the scene graph, computes continuous object trajectories, and validates them against physical, geometric, and semantic constraints. The verified trajectories are then projected into object-level motion bounding boxes to guide downstream sketch-video synthesis. Experiments on CounterSketchBench (80 questions) demonstrate that physics-grounded trajectories provide stronger motion guidance than direct VLM predictions.

Rethinking Dataset Distillation for Classification: Do Distilled Sets Outperform Coresets?

Trisha Mittal, Akshay Mehra, Joshua Kimball

原文摘要

Dataset distillation (DD) has emerged as a prominent approach in data centric machine learning, aiming to synthesize compact training sets for efficient training by compressing the information in large datasets into a small number of synthetic samples. However, DD methods are often evaluated under inconsistent evaluation protocols, ranging from standard ERM to single/multi-teacher supervision, making it difficult to isolate the effectiveness of distilled data from evaluation. Moreover, many prior methods claim that DD outperforms data pruning approaches such as coreset selection (CS), based on the assumption that restricting condensed datasets to subsets of real samples fundamentally limits their expressiveness. In this work, we critically evaluate DD methods through large-scale experiments using standardized datasets and evaluation protocols to assess their intrinsic effectiveness. We benchmark seven state-of-the-art (SOTA) DD methods on ImageNet-1K, ImageNet100, and ImageNette, using three widely adopted training protocols against four CS strategies. Our results show that while some DD methods fail to outperform even simple random subsets, the SOTA DD approaches are comparable to or worse than coresets on large-scale datasets and incur a substantially higher cost for construction. Beyond accuracy, we also evaluate the representativeness, diversity, and quality of condensed sets, and find that coresets consistently achieve better coverage of the original data distribution. These findings highlight the limited practical advantages of current DD methods and show that coresets remain competitive and are often a more computationally efficient alternative for data-centric learning.

Where Do Long Captions Fail? Position-Aware Diagnosis and Reinforcement Learning for Detailed Image Captioning

原文摘要

Detailed image captioning is usually framed as an amount problem: a model should mention more visual facts while avoiding hallucination. However, autoregressive VLMs generate captions as ordered sequences, and later generations may be produced under weaker or noisier visual grounding. We therefore argue that long-form captioning should be studied not only by what facts are mentioned, but also by where they appear. We introduce a position-aware rubric representation that decomposes dense human references into atomic visual claims, verifies generated captions against those claims, and induces a quartile-wise composition of supported, hallucinated, and generic content. This lens reveals two qualitatively different failures in long captions: models tend to produce unsupported specificity in the middle, while the final portion often escapes into vague, non-evidential language rather than simply accumulating more hallucination. A same-reference human control does not exhibit these patterns; additional human audits examine the visual validity of the induced labels. Motivated by this diagnosis, we propose PAGER (Position-Aware Grounded Evidence Reinforcement), a GRPO training objective with separate signals for supported fine-grained middle evidence, evidence-bearing tail continuation, claim coverage, and content-aware length control. The result is a closed loop: the same ordered claim representation identifies where long captions fail and supplies the position-specific reward needed to repair those failures. Experiments on detailed-caption benchmarks show that PAGER improves position-wise grounding and pairwise caption preference while preserving competitive global caption quality.

Improving Diffusion-Based Augmentation for Data-Scarce Image Classification via Mask-Guided Reference Attention and Repulsive Noise Optimization

Hyun-Jic Oh, GaYeon Koh, Won-Ki Jeong

原文摘要

Diffusion-based data augmentation has emerged as a powerful strategy for addressing data-scarce image classification. Recent pipelines typically adapt a pretrained text-to-image diffusion model to a limited number of class examples and subsequently sample synthetic images using diverse textual prompts. However, in extreme data-scarce regimes such as long-tailed single-sample settings, this approach suffers from a dual failure mode: the generated samples often lack discriminative foreground details crucial for classifier training, and the adapted class prior can bias the early denoising process, causing output images to exhibit similar patterns despite varying text prompts. To overcome these limitations, we propose a sampling-side framework of two complementary components that simultaneously enhance fine details and diversity. First, Mask-Guided Reference (MGR) Attention updates only foreground value tokens with reference features via zero-shot segmentation, limiting reference influence to the target object and mitigating excessive global feature injection. Second, Repulsive Noise Optimization (RNO) encourages initial noise trajectories to diverge from dominant generative modes of the adapted model, enabling target prompts to express broader contextual variation. Extensive evaluations show consistent improvements, with the largest gains in long-tailed single-sample settings of up to 2.50 and 2.94 points on CUB-LT IF100, and further robustness across few-shot and background-shift evaluations.

AceAction-5M: Hierarchical Goals for Generalist Action Learning Across 3D Game Worlds

Kailing Li, Ruoxuan Zhang, Zheyuan Zhou, Boyang Chu, Yingshan Lei, Hongxia Xie, Liang Du, Zixun Sun

原文摘要

Video games provide a practical setting for collecting vision-language-action (VLA) data, whose acquisition in physical environments is costly. Existing datasets, however, remain limited by restricted game coverage, sparse language supervision, or temporal hierarchies that do not necessarily reflect changes in task objectives. We introduce AceAction, a dataset of human gameplay across multiple 3D games for learning skill composition and subgoal transitions. AceAction organizes demonstrations around complete tasks, linking overall instructions, ordered subgoals, and local skill instructions to temporally aligned visual observations and keyboard-and-mouse actions. To construct these annotations, we develop a vision-language model pipeline that identifies subgoals from changes in objectives or interaction targets, anchors navigation goals to visually recognizable waypoints, and composes adjacent subgoals into task instructions. The resulting demonstrations cover navigation, reconnaissance, combat, interaction, and recovery, with explicit stage boundaries that connect task progression to fine-grained control. We assess annotation quality through model-based verification and human inspection. An audit of 500 trajectories yields a 95.8% pass rate across independent reviewer assessments. AceAction provides a data foundation for studying how agents execute, combine, and switch skills to follow complex instructions in dynamic game environments.

Arbitrarily Slow Polynomial Convergence of Fictitious Play

Jacob Abernethy, John Lazarsfeld, Andre Wibisono

原文摘要

We show that fictitious play can converge at arbitrarily slow polynomial rates in two-player zero-sum games. For every integer $k \ge 2$, we construct a payoff matrix with $(k+1)^2 - 5$ actions per player for which the duality gap of the empirical strategies decays as $Θ(t^{-1/k})$ after $t$ steps. The family starts from the standard rock-paper-scissors matrix, with each higher-order game constructed recursively from the preceding one. After a prescribed common initial action, every subsequent best response under fictitious play is unique. For $k \ge 3$, these games give counterexamples to Karlin's conjectured $O(t^{-1/2})$ convergence rate, and they extend the recent $Θ(t^{-1/3})$ construction of Wang (2025) to arbitrarily slow polynomial rates.
