Pair-Dependent Judge Errors Change the Minimax Rate of Semantic Entropy

Jiamiao Liu, Dewen Qiao, Yu Zhang, Xuetao Chen

原文摘要

Semantic entropy, the entropy of the meanings among a language model's sampled answers, is estimated from the verdicts of a judge that declares pairs of answers equivalent or not, and automatic judges err in ways that depend on the answers they compare. The existing minimax theory covers only judges whose false-equivalence probability is the same for all pairs. We model a known judge that declares two answers with meanings $a$ and $b$ equivalent with probability $q+ΔM_{ab}$, for a symmetric matrix $M$ and $q$ bounded away from $0$ and $1$, and show that for three meanings the rate is set by tree statistics on four answers, while on an open set of channels the consistency threshold is set by trees on five. For every channel in an explicit open class, the minimax squared risk is of order $N^{-1/3}$ with $N=n^4Δ^6$ on polynomial weak windows on which $n^5Δ^8$ exceeds a multiple of $\log n$, and of order $\min\{1,N^{-1/3}\}$ on every polynomial weak window when the tree functions on at most four vertices are injective. The exponent comes from a cubic degeneracy at the equitable point. On an open set of channels in the class, the four-vertex tree functions take equal values at two distributions with different entropies. For such a channel, on every polynomial weak window, the minimax risk is of the order of the sum of $\min\{1,N^{-1/3}\}$ and a term that decays exponentially in $n^5Δ^8$, so no estimator is consistent while $n^5Δ^8$ stays bounded, even as $N\to\infty$. For $Δ=n^{-β}$ with $β>1/2$, channels of the class with injective four-vertex tree functions allow consistent estimation exactly for $β<2/3$, and the channels of this open set exactly for $β<5/8$, at which the risk exponent drops from $1/12$ to $0$. Computer-assisted certificates show that both kinds of channels occur on open sets.

Analyzing Condensation on Patterned Surfaces via Deep Learning

Tae E. Cooper, Michael Gee, Sheila Whitman, Jemma Dengel, Anthony Katselas, Duygu Dengiz, Frank Keutsch, Joanna Aizenberg

原文摘要

Dropwise condensation is key to power and water systems. State-of-the-art condensation surfaces are often inhomogeneous, either patterned by design or random defects. Inhomogeneous surface features dictate the rates of each stage of dropwise condensation-nucleation, growth, coalescence, and shedding. Characterizing these rates requires the precise detection of thousands of droplets. Yet, existing segmentation methods are unable to detect droplets on inhomogeneous surfaces. We developed TileSAM3, a universal droplet segmentation tool built on the Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM3). Hierarchical tiling with per-tile inference followed by post-processing extended SAM3's detection cap and raised the effective resolution of small droplets. We created two datasets: High Quality Droplet Dataset (N=365,826; HQDD) with homogeneous surfaces and Low Quality Droplet Dataset (N=63,577; LQDD) with patterned, defect-laden surfaces under adverse lighting. TileSAM3 closely reproduced thresholding annotations on HQDD, surpassed it over sixfold on LQDD (Average Precision 0.57 versus 0.088), and outperformed other deep learning models on all metrics evaluated. Combined with KD-tree tracking, TileSAM3 identified localized nucleation and coalescence in narrow active bands on a stiffness-patterned surface. TileSAM3 enables analysis of understudied inhomogeneous substrates with poor lighting and videography which facilitates faster, lower cost research of condensation materials.

Goal-Aware Dynamic Multi-Agent Collaboration for Long-Horizon Tasks

Xu Shen, Lingyong Yan, Shuaiqiang Wang, Jianmin Wu, Zhikai Chen, Jiliang Tang, Jie Ren

原文摘要

LLM-based agents are increasingly used to complete complex, long-horizon tasks without human intervention. To make progress toward the task goal, agents need to perform different duties, such as planning and verification, when needed. To understand how single agents manage these duties during long-horizon execution, we conduct a preliminary study. Our analysis shows that verification has the strongest association with task success, but often occurs late, leaving limited opportunities for correction. We also find that the proportion of duty-relevant information decreases as records from different duties accumulate in a shared context. These findings lead us to examine whether multi-agent systems (MAS) can address these problems by assigning duties to agents with separate contexts. Our analysis shows that this separation alone is insufficient. Agents can lose track of the overall goal and repeat prior investigations. They may also lack necessary background while receiving irrelevant information from others. To maintain goal awareness and coordinate collaboration as task needs change, we propose Goal-Aware Dynamic Multi-Agent Collaboration (GAD). It uses a growing execution graph to organize subtasks and their dependencies. To keep agents focused on their goals, each context retains the original instruction and the assigned task's goal and acceptance conditions. To adapt collaboration and information sharing during execution, agents can divide tasks into subtasks and specify dependencies based on execution evidence. These dependencies guide when agents work and which results they receive. Verification and recovery check subtask results and full task completion against their goals, providing feedback for repair when checks fail.

Confident Learning-based Network for Detecting Bug-Inducing Commits on SZZ with Noisy Labels

Weihao Sun, Qiyun Zhao

原文摘要

The Just-In-Time (JIT) defect prediction model serves as a critical tool for ensuring the quality of software development and enhancing software performance. It assists development teams in promptly identifying and addressing potential issues by predicting whether code submissions may introduce defects. However, due to the existence of data noise and insufficient semantic connections in real-world scenarios, existing approaches face challenges in accurately identifying the code commits that introduce defects and capturing the potential semantic relationships. To address these challenges, we propose the BIC- Hunter(Bug-Inducing Commits Hunter) model, which mitigates data noise and improves semantic understanding, thereby enhancing the accuracy of bug-inducing commit identification. BIC - Hunter model consists of two components: a data denoising component and a semantic relationship capturing component. Specifically, the data denoising component addresses the challenges posed by inaccurate annotations and inconsistencies in real-world data, enhancing the reliability of training data and improving overall model robustness. The semantic relation- ship capturing component constructs homogeneous graphs and applies graph convolutional networks to facilitate a more comprehensive analysis of code context, enabling the identification of defects caused by code commits and enhancing the confidence in pinpointing their root causes. Experimental studies on a large-scale dataset integrated from three open-source datasets show that BIC- Hunter exhibits outstanding performance. BIC- Hunter outperforms the state-of-the-art by 6.16%, 7.13%, and 5.53% on Recall@1, Recall@2, and Recall@3, respectively, while the MFR index increases by 8.43% to 32.82%. These results demonstrate the superior capability of our method in identifying bug-inducing commits.

Wearable Biosensors for Early Detection and Continuous Monitoring of Postpartum Depression: A Human-Centered Approach

Emma Ricci-De Lucca, Elizabeth L. Murnane

原文摘要

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States. However, there are significant gaps in PPD screening, detection, and treatment. A main challenge stems from limitations in existing methods for early PPD diagnosis and subsequent monitoring and intervention. Mobile technology that incorporates interactive interfaces and continuous wearable biosensors holds major potential to augment clinical decision-making and enhance PPD care. A number of compelling research directions exist in effectively developing such systems, including user experience design, sensing accuracy during perinatal stages, clinical integration and interoperability, acceptance and adoption, and privacy and ethics. By focusing on wearable devices that center women and their experiences, this paper discusses such challenges and opportunities at the intersections of HCI, inclusive physiological computing, and women's health.

Read More, Reason Deeper: Latent Workspaces for Long-Sequence Recommendation

Renzhi Wu, Li Sheng, Zikun Cui, Junjie Yang, Tai Guo, Keke Zhai, Yan Li, Jerry Fu 等 11 位作者

原文摘要

Long-sequence recommendation can improve along two axes: \emph{evidence scaling} exposes longer histories, while \emph{reasoning scaling} adds layers that interpret that evidence for a candidate. Existing models couple them: sequence encoders propagate every added event through depth, whereas one-shot selection prevents later layers from revisiting omitted evidence. We introduce the Latent Workspace Ranker (LWR), which keeps typed evidence in persistent banks and propagates a fixed-size candidate-local workspace. Each layer rereads the banks from its evolving workspace and archives compact post-interaction state, allowing history length and reasoning depth to grow independently. We compare four architectures across various history--depth configurations using evidence scaling at fixed depth, reasoning scaling at fixed 10K history, and their joint compute-efficient frontier. LWR leads all families at long histories, continues improving with reasoning compute, and converts additional training compute into quality gains at the fastest fitted rate on the joint frontier. At 10K history, it improves NE by 0.19% over HSTU while using 69.6% fewer forward GFLOP/request. It also outperforms existing baselines on two billion-scale ranking surfaces. These results show that separating addressable evidence from propagated state makes reading more and reasoning deeper independently controllable and jointly useful.

Multi-level Constrained Learning for Underwater Image Enhancement

Wangtao Bao, Liping Xie, Kanjian Zhang, Huimin Lu

原文摘要

Underwater image enhancement aims to correct color and recover detail degraded by wavelength-dependent attenuation, scattering, and noise. Paired-reference supervision constrains output similarity, but does not by itself specify the color mapping, the strength of local detail corrections, or consistency with the degraded observation. We propose MCL-UIE, a paired-supervised framework that addresses these requirements by constraining restoration operations and the training objective. Monotonic Chromatic Transform (MCT) restricts global color mapping in log-LMS space through positive diagonal entries and bounded cross-channel coefficients. Uncertainty-Gated Wavelet Reconstruction (UGWR) modulates high-frequency residuals with a learned confidence gate calibrated against normalized wavelet reconstruction errors. During training, Reference-Anchored Degradation Replay (RADR) renders the enhanced image and its paired reference using shared latent degradation proxies, encouraging both to reproduce the input. The three components share a restoration network that combines structured color correction, locally controlled detail recovery, and reference-anchored replay. MCL-UIE ranks first in thirteen of sixteen full-reference dataset-metric comparisons and produces competitive visual results on no-reference benchmarks. Objective ablations indicate that confidence calibration is most effective when combined with replay supervision. RADR is used only during training and adds no inference-time computation. Our code is available at https://github.com/Wangtao-Bao/MCL-UIE.

Reasoning or Pattern Exploitation? Mechanistic Insights from RL-Trained Language Models

Aishik Nagar, Cheston Tan

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly described as acquiring "reasoning" skills after reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards. However, whether these gains reflect genuine reasoning or more superficial adaptations remains underexplored. In this work, we probe LLMs trained in a finite and exhaustively analyzable logical domain, namely Tic-Tac-Toe, and trace how internal representations evolve across reinforcement learning (RL) with Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). Quantitatively, RL yields high accuracy and robustness across prompt variations, suggesting the emergence of game reasoning. Mechanistic interpretability, however, paints a different picture: features extracted with sparse autoencoders (SAEs) reveal that models primarily adapt to rely more heavily on information already explicit in the prompt, such as whose turn it is, game progression and board occupancy. In comparison, high-level concepts like board symmetries and strategic forks remain weakly represented, raising concerns that reasoning benchmarks overestimate model abilities. This suggests that RL-driven "reasoning" may conflate task-specific adaptations to input information with reasoning ability. We provide, for the first time: (i) a systematic interpretability pipeline tracing representation dynamics across RL training in small-scale LLMs; (ii) an extension of SAE-based feature discovery to hypothesis-driven testing in a finite logical domain; and (iii) an interpretability-based demonstration that RL post-training neither adds nor removes concept information but reorganizes which features dominate the representation, with causal interventions locating the decision downstream of it, in the late-layer state.

EmbodiExp: Compositional Experience Transfer for Embodied Agents

Zhifeng Gu, Ying Chen, Rui Jiang, Lei Yi, Bing Wang

原文摘要

Experience can help embodied agents turn high-level plans into grounded actions, but transferring it across tasks remains challenging: previously effective strategies may be inapplicable to the current state or fail to produce their intended outcomes. We present EmbodiExp, a framework for constructing transferable experiences and composing them online during embodied task execution. Our key observation is that tasks often share subgoals whose completion can be assessed independently of overall task success. We therefore introduce an outcome-grounded subgoal experience that specifies a subgoal, applicability conditions, an adaptable policy, and a verifiable outcome. During execution, applicable experiences guide action generation, while verified outcomes can establish the conditions required by subsequent experiences, enabling online composition. Subgoal-level outcome attribution further enables failure utilization: failed trajectories can still contribute verified local successes and condition-specific guidance on actions to avoid. Experiments on multiple embodied benchmarks under a fold-based protocol with frozen experience banks demonstrate the effectiveness of EmbodiExp.

Edited Endpoints as Partial Goals for Image-to-Video Generation

Sihyun Kim, Sanghyun Jo, Kyungsu Kim

原文摘要

Edited endpoint images make the target of an image-to-video transition explicit and can improve transition completion, but also preserve context in the source image's layout. Full-frame endpoint conditioning turns this preserved context into requirements on the video's final state, potentially inducing temporal artifacts. We measure discontinuity with Hard-Cut (HC), late background reversal with Background Motion Reversal (BMR), and motion suppression with Dynamic Degree (DD). These artifacts appear across five video models spanning training-free and learned endpoint conditioning, in model-specific forms. We study Partial, a selective conditioning scheme that constrains only an edit-relevant region estimated from image-editor attention and leaves the remaining terminal content to the video model. Across three backbones on TC-Bench-I2V, Partial reduces temporal artifacts relative to full-frame conditioning, with no significant difference in Transition Completion Ratio (TCR); on Wan2.2-Turbo, uniformly weakening conditioning does not reproduce these reductions. A donor-context intervention keeps full-frame conditioning and replaces only the context outside the edit-relevant region with the final frame of a Partial video. It lowers HC and BMR on HunyuanVideo-1.5 and lowers BMR while restoring DD on Wan2.2-Turbo, with no significant difference in TCR, so constraint extent alone does not account for these artifacts. Together, these findings suggest that edited endpoints should serve as partial future goals, although edit relevance does not guarantee future validity. Code and data will be released at https://github.com/wannagetacat/Edited-Endpoints-I2V.

PRISM: Personalized Item Representations in User History

Renzhi Wu, Zikun Cui, Junjie Yang, Li Sheng, Yongjun Xie, Jerry Fu, Nipun Mathur, Sri Reddy 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Sequential recommenders typically construct history inputs from item identifiers or content features using an embedding map shared across users. The same item therefore yields the same initial embedding representation, even when users have different relationships to the item. We propose personalized item representations in user history, where each item's embedding expresses its relationship to the user. Personalization becomes a property of the history inputs themselves, supplying richer evidence for later sequence modeling. We instantiate this idea with PRISM, which reuses upstream ranking computation to generate personalized item embeddings. An autoencoder jointly compresses all layer states from a user tower, a user--item tower, and same-request candidate mixing into one embedding per scored pair for downstream replay. Offline evaluation on Surface 1, a major recommendation surface at billion scale, reports an average downstream normalized entropy (NE) change of $-0.15\%$, compared with $-0.07\%$ for VISTA at similar history lengths. We further identify an empirical sequence-length scaling law: over history lengths of 26--240 events, NE gain follows a fitted power law with exponent 0.468, increasing from 0.06\% to 0.17\%. Therefore, personalized item representations in user history provide a new scaling dimension for improving recommendation quality.

Aspects of Muchnik's paradox in restricted betting

George Barmpalias, Lu Liu

原文摘要

Muchnik's paradox says that enumerable betting strategies are not always reducible to enumerable strategies whose bets are restricted to either even rounds or odd rounds. In other words, there are outcome sequences x where an effectively enumerable strategy succeeds, but no such parity-restricted effectively enumerable strategy does. We characterize the effective Hausdorff dimension of such $x$, showing that it can be as low as 1/2 but not less. We also show that such reals that are random with respect to parity-restricted effectively enumerable strategies with packing dimension as low as $\log\sqrt3$. Finally we exhibit Muchnik's paradox in the case of computable integer-valued strategies.

Learning Where It Matters: Geometric Anchoring for Robust Preference Alignment

Youngjae Cho, Jongsuk Kim, Ji-Hoon Kim

原文摘要

Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) and related methods align large language models from pairwise preferences by regularizing updates against a fixed reference policy. As the policy drifts, a static reference, however, can become increasingly miscalibrated, leading to distributional mismatch and amplifying spurious preference signals under noisy supervision. Conversely, reference-free variants avoid mismatch but often suffer from unconstrained reward drift. We propose Geometric Anchor Preference Optimization (GAPO), which replaces the fixed reference with a dynamic, geometry-aware anchor: an adversarial local perturbation of the current policy within a small radius that serves as a pessimistic baseline. This anchor enables an adaptive reweighting mechanism, modulating the importance of each preference pair based on its local sensitivity. We further introduce the Anchor Gap, the reward discrepancy between the policy and its anchor, and show under smoothness conditions that it approximates worst-case local margin degradation. Optimizing a logistic objective weighted by this gap downweights geometrically brittle instances while emphasizing robust preference signals. Across diverse noise settings, GAPO consistently improves robustness while matching or improving performance on standard LLM alignment and reasoning benchmarks.

ACAM-J-MARS: Multi-Atlas Riemannian Spectral Representations for Decoding Advanced Meditation States from fMRI

Jian Wang, Winson F. Z. Yang, Wugeng Zheng, Matthew D. Sacchet

原文摘要

Inferring jhana-type advanced concentration absorption meditation (ACAM-J) states from fMRI data is challenging due to the spatially distributed nature of meditation-related effects, substantial inter-individual variability that can exceed within-subject state differences, and limited sample sizes. Conventional machine-learning approaches often formulate this problem as unimodal, Euclidean, atlas-based classification, thereby neglecting the non-Euclidean geometry of functional connectivity matrices and underrepresenting temporal information in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI); these limitations can lead to suboptimal classification performance. We propose ACAM-J-MARS (\textbf{M}ulti-\textbf{A}tlas \textbf{R}iemannian \textbf{S}pectral representation), which computes functional connectivity using multiple atlases, represents symmetric positive definite (SPD) connectivity matrices on a Riemannian manifold, projects them into a log-Euclidean tangent space, and augments connectivity-derived features with low-frequency BOLD spectral energy to better resolve subtle state differences under heterogeneous variability. Evaluated on 204 segments from 22 practitioners, ACAM-J-MARS improves performance across multiple backbone models, achieving a balanced accuracy of 0.757 for early versus late ACAM-J classification and 0.545 for three-class classification, corresponding to a 10.8-point absolute improvement over the strongest baseline. These findings suggest that the proposed representation improves the decoding of advanced meditative brain states and may enable downstream applications such as closed-loop neurofeedback and real-time psychophysiological brain-computer interfaces.

The View from Nowhere: Population-Centered Agent Evolution

Shuo Yan, Ningning Hou, Haoyu He, Haochen Pei, Shang Gao

原文摘要

Self-improving AI systems can revise the designs that govern their own behavior. Yet existing approaches center improvement on selected parent agents and their evolutionary experience, leaving the broader population largely underused. We identify a substantial gap between population coverage (i.e., the tasks solved by at least one evolved variant) and the performance of the best individual agent. This gap shows that useful capabilities and diagnostic evidence emerge across the population without being consolidated into its leading agents. These observations motivate the view from nowhere, a principle for agent evolution: an agent should be improved by interpreting its behavior through population-wide patterns of success, failure, and prior self-modification. We instantiate this principle as Population-Centered Evolution (PCE). PCE distils task records and modification histories from the population into a population block, which captures recurring failures, complementary successes, and the effects of previously attempted modifications to guide improvements to a selected parent's harness. Under matched models, initial harnesses, and evolution schedules, PCE achieves 72.1% success on SWE-bench Verified and 96.7% on Polyglot, improving over a strong group-evolution baseline by 3.2 and 5.9 percentage points. In our evaluation, PCE reduces the gap between population coverage and best-agent performance by one-third on SWE-bench and closes it on Polyglot. These results suggest that treating the population as evidence, not merely as candidates for selection, provides a complementary principle for agent evolution.

Reading-Level Verification of Kanji Words in Japanese Financial Speech Synthesis

Cheng Zhang

原文摘要

Few-shot voice cloning makes it cheap to produce daily Japanese financial commentary with several synthetic speakers, but kanji words with more than one reading, such as the word for "market" (shijo vs. ichiba) or "overall trend" (taisei vs. oze), are still misread. A common quality gate transcribes each synthesized sentence with automatic speech recognition (ASR), converts both the input and the transcript to kana, and regenerates on mismatch. We show that this gate is unreliable in both directions: when the audio contains a misreading, the ASR language model frequently writes the expected kanji back, hiding the error, and when the audio is correct, ordinary recognition errors trigger needless regeneration. We propose a reading-level check that scores the expected reading and its confusable alternatives with a connectionist temporal classification (CTC) hiragana recognizer and flags a word when an alternative explains the audio better. On 540 utterances from three voice-cloned production voices covering 30 financial terms, with misreadings injected under controlled conditions, the transcript-based gate detected 78.9% of misreadings at a 44.4% false-alarm rate, whereas the proposed check detected 91.7% at 5.0% (AUC 0.990). On natural kanji input, it caught a front-end error that the transcript-based gate missed for one voice, and reduced regeneration requests from 38.9% to 6.1% of sentences.

EgoContact: Evaluating Physical Intelligence with Egocentric Video

原文摘要

Egocentric video has emerged as one of the most scalable sources of data for learning generalizable manipulation priors. Yet, despite its growing use in pretraining robotic policies, it has been underutilized as a validation tool for physical intelligence, a key component of which is understanding where to make contact with an object to achieve an intended interaction. We present EgoContact, a large-scale egocentric dataset for evaluating the generalizability and precision of learned manipulation priors through future contact-point prediction. EgoContact contains 22.5K manually verified interaction events, each with a pre-contact observation, semantic intent, and pixel-precise contact locations. We find that current methods often struggle to predict precise interaction contacts and sometimes fail to localize the target object in diverse, in-the-wild scenes, even when allowed multiple predictions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the usefulness of EgoContact's annotated interactions for robotic manipulation: simply using EgoContact as the memory bank of an existing affordance-transfer policy improves grasp success from 14.2% to 31.2% in simulation and from 16% to 58% on a real robot.

Multi-Agent LLMs for Adaptive Acquisition in Bayesian Optimization

Mohammadsina Almasi, Andrea Carbonati, Hadis Anahideh

原文摘要

The exploration-exploitation trade-off is central to sequential decision-making and black-box optimization, yet how Large Language Models (LLMs) reason about and manage this trade-off remains poorly understood. Unlike Bayesian Optimization, where exploration and exploitation are explicitly encoded through acquisition functions, LLM-based optimization relies on implicit, prompt-based reasoning over historical evaluations, making search behavior difficult to analyze or control. In this work, we present a metric-level study of LLM-mediated search policy learning, studying how LLMs construct and adapt exploration-exploitation strategies under multiple operational definitions of exploration, including informativeness, diversity, and representativeness. We show that single-agent LLM approaches, which jointly perform strategy selection and candidate generation within a single prompt, suffer from cognitive overload, leading to unstable search dynamics and premature convergence. To address this limitation, we propose a multi-agent framework that decomposes exploration-exploitation control into strategic policy mediation and tactical candidate generation. A strategy agent assigns interpretable weights to multiple search criteria, while a generation agent produces candidates conditioned on the resulting search policy defined as weights. This decomposition renders exploration-exploitation decisions explicit, observable, and adjustable. Empirical results across various continuous optimization benchmarks indicate that separating strategic control from candidate generation substantially improves the effectiveness of LLM-mediated search.

原文摘要

Marine video understanding is crucial for a wide range of real-world applications. However, existing marine video datasets suffer from limitations, including the limited number of data samples, fine-grained text descriptions, and detailed visual attributes. To address these limitations, we introduce a large-scale, video-text dataset featuring rich, in-the-wild visual attributes tailored for complex marine environments. Our dataset comprises 2,000 video-text pairs annotated with 13 attributes covering up to four objects per scene, object visual/geometric properties, behaviors, environmental context, and camera motion, spanning diverse lighting conditions, times of day, and 7 countries. From these annotations, we generate 16,080 video-question pairs (12,080 multiple-choice, 4,000 open-ended). Furthermore, we benchmark both proprietary and open-source video-LLM models on video question answering and video captioning tasks. We find that (i) proprietary models often achieves superior performances; (ii) VLMs handle object motion well but struggle with complex camera motion; (iii) closed-source models struggle to perceive camera motion; and (iv) VLMs struggle to reason in static cameras.

Beyond Long-Tail POIs: Transition-Centered Modeling for Human Mobility Prediction

Dingyang Lyu, Zhengjia Xu, Jey Han Lau, Jianzhong Qi

原文摘要

Human mobility prediction, a core task of location-based web services, forecasts a user's next Point of Interest (POI) visit from historical trajectories, supporting applications from recommendation to urban planning. A general perception in the literature has been that visits to popular POIs are relatively easy to predict. Our analysis challenges this perception and shows that, even for visits to popular POIs, many predictions fail. The underlying cause is often transition-level sparsity, where a transition is a move from a source POI to a destination POI. While a POI may be popular, its transitions from other POIs may still be very sparse, since there are many POIs in a dataset. As a result, predicting a popular next POI can still be challenging if the transition from the source POI to it never appears in the training data. We therefore argue that a core bottleneck in human mobility prediction lies in the transition-level long tail, and propose REtrieval Combined with pArametric memory for next-POI prediction (RECAP). RECAP learns frequent transitions in the parameters of a small Transformer trained from scratch. Long-tail transitions give the parameters little or no training signal. RECAP retrieves evidence for them from two sources: (i) multi-hop transitivity learned from a global transition graph of all users, and (ii) revisit evidence from a target user's historical trajectory. RECAP further uses two-stage training to let the revisit component also learn from frequently seen transitions. Experiments on three real-world check-in datasets show that RECAP improves prediction accuracy, with clear gains on tail transitions. Our code is available at https://github.com/NiallLDY/RECAP.

A Novel Approach to Evaluating Evaluation Metrics for Multi-Output Structured Prediction

Akshay Vyas, Angelo Pimienta, Nicholas Ruozzi

原文摘要

In multi-output structured prediction tasks, while only one ground truth label may be provided in the training data, multiple equally valid outputs may be possible, making reliable evaluation a persistent challenge. We postulate that human evaluators implicitly use task-specific invariants, e.g., object boundaries in colorized images or named entities in translations, to judge if an output is acceptable. Under this assumption, we introduce a notion of approximate task-specific invariants and use them as diagnostic tools to evaluate a variety of existing metrics for vision and language tasks. We use these task invariants as part of a framework to systematically test metric reliability by encouraging domain-relevant invariants in model outputs via an augmented loss function. In our experiments, we observe that enforcing invariants with an augmented loss yields substantial improvements in popular distributional metrics while more traditional metrics change only marginally. Through this invariants-driven evaluation, we expose where standard metrics fail to detect meaningful differences, and we highlight the conditions under which distributional metrics succeed or still fall short.

Joint Rigid Alignment and Morphable Reconstruction from Partial 3D Face Scans

原文摘要

Aligning a partial, real-world 3D face scan to a canonical representation requires solving two coupled problems at once: estimating the rigid pose that brings the scan into a common frame, and completing the facial shape in regions the scan never observed. Existing pipelines typically decouple these steps, running a generic point-cloud registration front end followed by a separate non-rigid fitting or deformation stage. Building on the GeoTransformer superpoint-matching architecture, we propose a single network that predicts both a rigid pose and a shape-complete point cloud in one forward pass: a cross-attention regressor, conditioned on transformer point features and predicted coarse correspondences, maps a partial scan to per-patch coefficients of a 3D morphable face model learned offline from a corpus of 8,000 identities. The resulting morphed template is then used, in the same forward pass, as the target for fine-grained Sinkhorn matching and rigid pose estimation, supervised purely by geometric alignment to ground-truth morphed geometry, so no hand-labeled coefficients are required. Against six classical and learned non-rigid registration baselines on held-out identities, our method leads the strongest ones by 3-4 times on per-vertex error and baselines that collapse the head onto the visible region by more than an order of magnitude, and is simultaneously the most accurate and fastest method on ground-truth-free scans from two independent real-scan datasets, NoW and NPHM. Code will be made publicly available.

Rebuild Dossier: Mechanically-Enforced Specs for Agentic App Rebuilds, and What Model-Tier Failures Reveal

Parker Fawcett

原文摘要

An AI agent's rebuild is only as good as the process that produced it. Prior work found that once a model is strong enough, a multi-agent rebuild pipeline loses to the simplest approach: giving the model the original code and one instruction (AgentModernize). We present rebuild-dossier, an open-source tool that locks an application's real interface - its exact inputs and outputs - before any code is written, then enforces one-test-at-a-time building through automated checks, not written instructions alone. Three results shape this evaluation, with differing amounts of evidence. First, in a small comparison, the compliant agent failed a held-back test while the rule-breaking agent passed everything - proof that a passing suite doesn't certify correctness when tests can be gamed. Second, we tested whether this beats simply giving the weaker model the source and one instruction: tied on a small app, but lost outright on a larger one where the automated check wasn't even running - pointing to the check mechanism, not interface-locking, which held up separately. Third, every claim here is checked at three levels - the agent's own report, an automated log, and the actual files produced - catching real errors, including a bug in our own logging code, that a single level would have missed. These risks reproduce on a different model and toolchain: a stronger model followed our process three times running, something the weaker model never managed. The tool is public, MIT licensed, and reproduces end to end against our own applications.

CLaW: Codec-Guided Adaptive Latent Watermarking for Traceable Diffusion Image Generation

Huangchao Song, Lingyun Yu, Cong Li, Peiqi Jiang, Mingqi Fang, Hongtao Xie

原文摘要

With the rapid advancement of text-to-image diffusion models, increasingly realistic AI-generated content has raised serious concerns about misuse and copyright infringement. Digital watermarking offers a promising solution by enabling user-level traceability, yet existing methods remain difficult to deploy at scale, hindered by costly model retraining or detection, poor effectiveness-fidelity trade-offs, and limited robustness to image transformations. To address these challenges, we propose CLaW (Codec-guided Latent Watermarking), a robust and efficient watermarking framework for traceable diffusion image generation with frozen diffusion backbones and inversion-free detection. Specifically, CLaW first uses a pretrained watermark codec to map each watermark message to a latent residual, enabling low-cost sampling-time injection. Then, the residual is injected within a late denoising window, where image semantics are better preserved and the watermark signal is less perturbed by subsequent denoising updates, yielding a better balance between watermark effectiveness and image fidelity. Furthermore, we introduce a decoder-guided adaptive injection mechanism that uses decoding confidence as feedback to dynamically calibrate watermark strength, reinforcing weak watermark signals and improving robustness under image transformations. Extensive experiments show that CLaW preserves high visual fidelity and achieves state-of-the-art robustness under image transformations, enabling reliable user-level traceability.

A Fix for Softmax and Cross-Entropy

Jonathan T. Barron, Dan Gnanapragasam, Michael Tschannen

原文摘要

Standard implementations of softmax, log-softmax, and cross-entropy have two numerical bugs. The first bug, Softmax Collapse, rounds the target logit's gradient to zero if that one logit is much larger than the others, resulting in gradients that no longer sum to zero. The second bug, Softmax Cancellation, occurs when student logits are close to teacher logits, and produces non-zero gradients even when the student and teacher logits are equal. We present simple implementations of log-softmax, softmax, and cross-entropy that fix both bugs. Our fix eliminates the previously observed "slingshot" phenomenon, speeds up grokking with weight decay, prevents accuracy collapse without weight decay, stops student networks from drifting away from the teacher during distillation, and shows that after memorization, logit growth is bounded by an equilibrium between weight decay and Adam's $ε$ hyperparameter.

VEvo-Harness: Causally-Guarded Self-Evolving Harness for Agentic Image Generation

Yuan Wang, Yuhang Yu, Mengting Chen, Tianrun Xu, Zihao Pan, Xuetao Feng, Wei Li

原文摘要

The central bottleneck in visual generation and editing has migrated from achieving pixel-level fidelity to satisfying densely constrained user specifications through increasingly agentic workflows. Prevailing agentic generation pipelines remain shallow generate-verify-rewrite loops treating VLM judgments as coarse visual feedback, either discarding repair experience or admitting ungated updates that poison skill library. With memorize and govern periods left open, they degrade into ungoverned iterators of repeated trial-and-error rather than continual self-evolving harness. Towards this issue, we present \textbf{VEvo-Harness}, the first causally-guarded continual self-evolving harness system for agentic visual generation. VEvo-Harness introduces four coupled innovations: (1) \textit{a visual traceback} that densifies sparse judgments into root-cause attributions with a hierarchical verification tree; (2) \textit{a visual continual governance} that admits only causally valid skill patches through counterfactual dual-arm image generation replay; (3) \textit{a lifecycle-managed harness state} that hierarchically distills root-cause-anchored episodes across working, experience, and pattern tiers into a persistent skill library of routable and causally verified capabilities; (4) \textit{a heterogeneous sandbox policy} that orchestrates a diverse action space of repair primitives, dynamically routing cost-aware interventions based on root causes to select the most effective strategy. VEvo-Harness surpasses state-of-the-art agentic methods and rivals proprietary generators (\textit{e.g.}, GPT-Image, Nano-Pro) while maintaining the continual harness evolution and generalization.

When Context Changes: Understanding Update Failures in LLMs

Junyu Guo, Yuchen Fang, Shangding Gu, Costas Spanos, James Demmel, Javad Lavaei

原文摘要

As preferences, goals, and facts change, LLM agents must use the current state while earlier versions remain in context. Yet they can answer with an old value of the same variable, a failure that we call stale binding. To study when models use outdated information and why, we introduce Controlled In-Context Memory (CICM), a benchmark for tracking and using updated information in conversations and agent logs. We observe that even frontier reasoning models can fail to recover the current state. We find that in open-source models probes can still recover the updated value when the model answers with an old one, pointing to a failure to select information that remains available. Component tests in Qwen and Pythia identify a mechanism for this selection failure: attention drift, where attention favors old values over the current one when producing an answer. We study a one-layer transformer to mathematically understand how this phenomenon happens: when attention scores are similar, several old values can together receive more attention than the current value. Guided by this explanation, we redirect attention toward the current value without further training. When the current value is requested directly, adjusting this intervention for each input corrects most old-value errors across various model families while preserving nearly all initially correct answers. Reliable context management therefore requires more than remembering updated information: models must use it to guide their answers.

Learning Erasing Equal-Length Relational Pattern Languages in the Limit from Positive Data over Binary Alphabets

S. Mahmoud Mousawi, Sandra Zilles

原文摘要

Relational pattern languages generalize Angluin's pattern languages by requiring the strings substituted for repeated occurrences of a variable to stand in a given relation, rather than to be identical. We study erasing pattern languages under the equal-length relation, where all occurrences of a variable must be replaced by strings of the same length. Over alphabets with at least three letters, this class is known to be learnable in the limit from positive data. We show that over a binary alphabet it is not, which resolves an open question from earlier work. Our proof reveals that non-learnability already holds for the restricted subclass of languages generated by patterns that have exactly three maximal substrings of variables. We then show that patterns with at most two maximal substrings of variables are learnable in the limit from positive data for every alphabet of size at least two. If the target pattern is known to have at most one maximal substring of variables, this can even be achieved by an iterative learner, which updates its hypothesis using only the current example and its previous hypothesis.

REALM: Identifying Minimal Task Assets for LLM Agents

Zihou Ren, Byungchul Tak, Long Wang

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) agents often receive access to more files, accounts, and services than a task requires. Prompt injection turns this excess access into an opportunity to redirect execution toward unrelated resources. Applying least privilege therefore requires identifying the assets needed by a task, including assets whose identities emerge only during execution. We present REALM (Required Execution Assets Linked to a Mission), an approach to identifying and maintaining a task's required assets and their permitted uses. The approach represents required assets as Dependency Graph nodes, resolves prerequisite relationships, and admits newly discovered assets through source-scoped selection. It separates discovering an asset from authorizing its use, while preserving the agent's freedom to choose its computation. The REALM Builder maintains the selected grants and projects Asset Files; the Partial API Manager exposes resource-bound Partial APIs to the Agent inside a Task Container. Across 60 clean tasks and 560 injected cases in AgentDyn, it completes 40.0% and 36.4% of tasks and decreases ASR from 16.6% to 0.2% with qwen3.5-flash as the base model.

原文摘要

Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) systems hold immense potential for automating complex workflows in materials discovery and design, but extending these capabilities to domain-intensive mechanistic studies remains challenging. General grain boundaries (GBs) exemplify this challenge, as their structural complexity complicates experimental characterization and atomistic modeling. Here, we present GBClaw, an agentic AI framework for investigating the structure and deformation of general GBs, which are common in real polycrystals yet remain understudied. By integrating large language models into a modular architecture, GBClaw effectively combines systematic simulations with targeted mechanistic analysis through iterative workflow refinement and dynamic replanning. Applied to 14 general asymmetric tilt GBs in nickel, the framework characterized interfacial defect structures and deformation modes across these incommensurate boundaries. It established a general approach to identify previously unobserved, widely spaced secondary GB misfit dislocations (SGBMDs) alongside closely spaced primary GB misfit dislocations (PGBMDs) in simulated atomic configurations and experimental images. Comparisons of GB sliding with and without SGBMDs revealed substantial differences in shear strength, underscoring the critical role of misfit-dislocation hierarchies in sliding resistance. Researcher-guided follow-up calculations further elucidated the structural origins of shear asymmetry and an anomalous shear response. This work demonstrates that combining agentic AI with domain expertise bridges high-throughput computational screening and deep mechanistic discovery at complex material interfaces.
