IntReal: A Real-World Dataset and Benchmark for Multimodal Interleaved Generation

Shaohan Yu, Jie Qin, Wende Tan, Haiwen Diao, Limeng Qiao, Yueming Lyu, Chenyang Si

原文摘要

Humans routinely consume multimodal content, where textual and visual information is naturally interleaved. Although Unified Multimodal Models (UMMs) can jointly generate text and images, multimodal interleaved generation remains largely underexplored. Progress in this area is hindered by two key limitations: (1) the lack of well-defined interleaved generation tasks and corresponding training data, and (2) the absence of fine-grained evaluation protocols that can reliably diagnose model performance across different capability dimensions. To this end, we present IntReal, comprising two complementary components: IntReal-100K, a real-world dataset of multimodal interleaved samples spanning four major categories, and the IntReal Evaluation Suite, which evaluates model performance across seven complementary dimensions using specialized expert models, enabling coarse-to-fine diagnosis. Extensive experiments validate our evaluation suite through low inter-metric redundancy (max pairwise absolute Spearman's $ρ\leq 0.42$ ), high agreement with human judgments (83.3% accuracy), and strong consistency across different expert evaluators (Spearman's $ρ> 0.9$ ), supporting the complementarity and reliability of our metrics. By benchmarking four families of UMMs, we show that IntReal Evaluation Suite reveals distinct strengths and weaknesses across models. Post-training experiments demonstrate the utility of IntReal-100K for improving interleaved generation and further show that training unimodal generation can also benefit interleaved generation. These findings suggest that interleaved generation can benefit from modality-specific optimization, rather than requiring joint text-image training at every stage.

Stable but Wrong: When Learning Stabilizes Away from the Truth

Zhipeng Zhang, Fujie Ren, Kai Li, Bo Qiu

原文摘要

Stable training is often treated as evidence that learning is succeeding, but stability characterizes optimization behavior rather than correctness relative to an external objective. We study what happens when the signal being optimized remains persistently biased. We define Stable but Wrong (SBW) as a learning state in which optimization remains active or stabilizes while the learned outcome stays systematically displaced from an independently defined objective. A minimal theoretical model shows that persistent systematic bias can separate a stable convergence point from the true objective even under standard conditions for stable convergence. We then introduce static and dynamic bias in reinforcement learning, supervised learning, and continual fine-tuning of large language models. Across these settings, optimization of the current learning signal continues or stabilizes while correctness relative to the external objective declines or remains displaced. Finally, two controlled challenge-correction experiments with external ground truth test whether a prespecified error can be exposed and changed. In controlled scientific discovery and CIFAR-10, targeted evidence corrects or reduces established errors more effectively than equal-budget general evidence, with no evident harm to paired correct states under the tested protocols. These experiments do not provide a general method for automatically discovering unknown errors. Overall, SBW identifies a basic limit of convergence and other internal optimization metrics as evidence of correctness in systems that learn through persistent bias and feedback.

Deeper Backpropagation or More Updates? Training Looped Language Models Across Budgets

Jiarun Shen, Xiao Li

原文摘要

Repeating transformer layers can improve language model performance without adding parameters. However, the added computational depth increases both forward and backward computation costs during training. Training such models requires choosing a backward window that controls how many final layer repetitions retain gradients during backpropagation. Longer windows improve per-token learning efficiency but increase per-update cost, while shorter windows reduce per-update cost but sacrifice per-token efficiency. Understanding which window performs better requires examining different training budgets. Prior work compares backward windows across computational budgets. When training budgets increase, it remains unclear whether the same window continues to perform best. We measure how the relative performance of two windows shifts as training budgets grow. Our method isolates per-token efficiency by training both windows on identical data, and compares complete training recipes at approximately equal training time at each budget. Results show that shorter windows lose much of their advantage as budgets grow. Controlled experiments show that both benefits decrease at larger budgets, with a greater decline in the benefit of extended training. Backward window comparisons depend on the available budget, and the preferred window among the tested candidates can change as the budget grows.

Verification-Aware Training for Speculative Decoding

Geonmo Gu, Byeongho Heo, HeeJae Jun, Yoohoon Kang, Sangmin Lee, Sangdoo Yun, Dongyoon Han

原文摘要

Speculative decoding accelerates large language model inference by using a draft model to generate candidate tokens, which are verified by the target model in a single forward pass. Verification proceeds sequentially and discards every position from the first rejection onward, yet existing draft training relies on token-level imitation of the target with a fixed per-position weighting that reflects neither property. We introduce Verification-Aware Training (VAT), a plug-in framework that simulates verification at every training step and turns the resulting accept and reject patterns into supervision. VAT consists of two components: (i) a verification head, a lightweight jointly trained binary classifier that supervises the draft model on whether each position survives sequential verification; (ii) verification-adaptive weighting, which replaces the fixed weighting schedule by keeping full weight up to each sample's first rejection point and re-anchoring the decay to start there. VAT modifies only the training objective, so it can be layered on top of existing methods without changing the draft architecture, the target model, or the inference procedure. Applied to EAGLE-3 and DFlash on Qwen3-4B, Qwen3-8B, and LLaMA-3.1-8B, VAT improves average acceptance length by up to 11.4% and wall-clock speedup by up to 8.7%, with consistent gains across math, code, and chat benchmarks. Code will be available at https://github.com/naver-ai/vat

BiliPicks: Seven Years of Weekly Platform Curation on Bilibili with Video Metadata, Comments, and Danmaku

Ruomeng Liu

原文摘要

BiliPicks documents seven years of Bilibili's Weekly Picks, a platform-curated editorial video series. The dataset covers 371 publicly listed issues and 13,758 curated videos from 22 March 2019 to 7 May 2026. It links issue dates, themes and editorial recommendations to video metadata, 47,799,657 top-level comments, 125,690,760 time-synchronised overlay comments (danmaku), and 13,739 cover images. Weekly issues provide a consistent unit for tracing changes in category composition, recurring creators and editorial framing. Corresponding comments and danmaku connect video-level discussion with audience expressions tied to particular moments, while covers add a visual dimension. We evaluate retrieval coverage and illustrate longitudinal analyses of selection, audience language and cover presentation. BiliPicks provides a dataset for future studies of platform curation, linking changes in published selections to their editorial framing and corresponding audience engagement.

Structure-retained low-rank adapters for weather synthesis

原文摘要

Real-world deployment of computer vision models, particularly in outdoor scenarios, is often limited by environmental interferences, such as adverse weather. Improving model robustness across weather conditions is thus critical for reliability. However, sourcing high-quality data relevant to isolated weather effects is a significant challenge. Most datasets include changes in dynamic elements across observations of the same scene: subjects such as pedestrians and vehicles change between shots, while camera viewpoints vary. These aspects make it difficult to decouple solely weather-induced distribution shifts from the scene. In this work, we address this with a novel weather synthesis framework that utilizes structure-retaining Low-Rank Adapters (LoRA). We analyze the attention blocks in Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL) and identify where relevant structural information is mostly processed during image-to-image translation. Through an architectural analysis of SDXL, we learn structural LoRA matrices for the corresponding blocks and then leverage them for weather synthesis, eliminating the need for external conditioning such as ControlNet. Experimental results demonstrate that our method improves upon existing synthesis approaches, achieving greater realism while preserving structure. This provides a robust pipeline for generating high-fidelity training and evaluation data for outdoor computer vision applications.

Compact-Bench: Measuring What Context Compaction Costs Long-Horizon Coding Agents

Ruopei Sun, Jianfeng Cai, Kangwen Zhao, Wengang Zhou, Houqiang Li

原文摘要

Context compaction lets long-horizon coding agents continue beyond their context windows, but can erase the state needed to finish a task. Prior evaluations measure efficiency, retained information, or end-to-end success, leaving the effect of a specific history replacement difficult to isolate. Compact-Bench pairs full-history and summary-only continuations from a shared repository state, and evaluates recurring details and successive production compactions. It covers 35 SWE-bench repairs, 146 agentic sessions, and 106 production chains. Across 14 summarizer backbones, stable damage ranges from 5-64% of 22 full-history successes: Claude Opus 4.8 preserves the most repairs, while DeepSeek-Flash damages the most. With Kimi-K3 as summarizer, the Kimi Code prompt preserves the most task continuations (19/22), whereas Claude Code retains the most recurring details (15.0%). LLM summaries retain at most 16.0% of recurring details, compared with 79.1% for mechanical extraction; production summaries retain 15.7% at the first boundary. Failures recur across methods: one repair is damaged by 13/14 backbones, and another by all 5 prompts. These results show that reliable compaction requires preserving the progress needed to complete a task, and that retaining relevant information alone does not ensure successful continuation. Code is available at https://github.com/cai-jianfeng/compact-bench and data is available at https://huggingface.co/datasets/caijanfeng/compact-bench.

Governance-Aware Federated Learning for Multi-Agent AI Systems: A Policy-Driven Framework for Trustworthy Collaborative AI

Kiranmayee Janardhan, Karthick S, Madhusmita Panda, Bharathi Vokkaliga Ganesh, Syed Ahmed

原文摘要

Federated Learning (FL) enables collaborative model training without exchanging raw data, but conventional FL provides limited runtime governance, evidence verification, fairness assessment, explainability monitoring, and auditability. This paper proposes Governance-Aware Federated Learning (GAFL), which combines independent governance-evidence verification, temporal trust, fairness and explanation assessment, anomaly detection, policy enforcement, normalized aggregation, and tamper-evident audit logging. Client-reported governance values are authenticated, bound to their submitted model updates, and independently recomputed before aggregation. A cross-silo prototype with 10 participants was evaluated on the Adult Income dataset under honest, benign non-IID, biased-data, malicious-update, non-compliant, falsified-evidence, and mixed-threat scenarios. Four methods were compared across five random seeds: FedAvg, FedAvg with anomaly filtering, GAFL without independent verification, and complete GAFL. Complete GAFL intervened on all affected participants at the final round across the evaluated risk scenarios, including identifying 100% of falsified-evidence participants, whereas GAFL without verification identified none of the falsified-evidence participants. Final macro-F1 ranged from 0.7520 to 0.7733 across GAFL scenarios. Complete GAFL required 173.67 plus or minus 26.94 ms of governance processing per round, compared with 3.82 plus or minus 0.79 ms for FedAvg. A strict demographic-parity threshold also caused frequent interventions for honest participants, demonstrating a significant fairness-policy and utility trade-off.

Rethinking Bayesian Optimization for Co-Optimizing LLM Training Configurations

原文摘要

Fine-tuning an LLM to maximize performance on a downstream task requires finding the optimal data and model configuration. This is a black-box optimization problem that Bayesian optimization (BO) addresses by sequentially evaluating training configurations and using observed performance feedback to adaptively guide the search towards better configurations. However, directly applying BO to the joint data-model space suffers from two fundamental challenges: the prohibitive cost of full LLM training at each iteration, and the large number of BO iterations required for effective exploration due to the high problem dimensionality. This paper introduces JoBS, a BO-based approach that co-optimizes data and model configurations without requiring a full training run at every iteration. JoBS allocates an initial portion of the optimization budget to learn a scaling-law-inspired performance predictor that estimates fully trained LLM performance from only a small number of training steps. The remaining budget is then used to run BO with this predictor, eliminating the need for full training runs and enabling JoBS to explore significantly more data and model configurations within the same budget. We analyze JoBS's average regret and derive the optimal budget allocation between predictor learning and BO iterations. Empirically, JoBS outperforms independent data and model optimization methods and existing multi-fidelity BO baselines across a diverse set of downstream tasks. Our code is available at https://github.com/chenzhiliang94/BO-for-LLMs.

Holistic Diversity Management in LLM-Guided Evolutionary Search

Seockbean Song, Youngsik Yoon, Sungjae Lee, Siwei Wang, Wei Chen, Jungseul Ok

原文摘要

LLM-guided evolutionary search iteratively selects existing programs, uses LLMs as mutation operators to generate a new program, and evaluates it to guide subsequent search. To preserve diversity and reduce the risk of premature convergence, it often adopts the island model, in which groups of programs, called islands, evolve separately. However, this structure alone does not guarantee distinct search directions, as islands may start from similar programs or converge toward similar solutions during evolution. This suggests that diversity must be considered throughout the search process, from initializing islands with distinct programs to developing island trajectories and sharing discoveries across islands. To this end, we propose HoliDivEvolve , a holistic approach to establishing and effectively utilizing island diversity throughout evolutionary search. Specifically, we introduce diverse initialization to establish different initial programs, trajectory adaptive island selection to allocate computation based on current score, recent growth, and the remaining search budget, and growth adaptive migration to share alternative ideas across islands. Experiments across diverse benchmarks show that HoliDivEvolve achieves competitive performance on most evaluated tasks. We further conduct controlled analyses to examine how our design choices affect search behavior and final performance.

SpaceAct: Benchmarking 3D Spatial and Temporal Reasoning via Closed-Loop Action and Active Perception

Chenglong Shi, Zekai Yuan, Yue Song, Jon Pu, Will Wu

原文摘要

To solve problems in 3D space rather than merely describe images, multimodal large language models (MLLMs) need 3D spatiotemporal reasoning: reconstructing 3D geometry from occluded 2D views, anticipating physical dynamics, and executing precise, closed-loop actions. Prior studies test passive VQA on static images or symbolic planning, requiring no execution or supplying privileged coordinates while ignoring collision, statics, and timing. We introduce SpaceAct, an interactive benchmark evaluating 3D spatiotemporal reasoning via closed-loop physical action and active perception, with SAPA, a Spatiotemporal Active-Probing Agent framework. Built on interlocking bricks and mechanical puzzles, it has 108 verified instances across 36 task families in six categories, without privileged coordinates, and diagnostic modes (+plan, +state, no-camera, blind, L7 levers). In brick-bridging or aperture-threading, models rotate the camera to resolve occlusion, read in-scene rulers, output 6-DoF poses under swept-collision and statics checks, and self-correct via split-screen rollback feedback (dynamic tasks freeze time during deliberation and give five strobe frames). Across 10 frontier MLLMs on the 44 hardest instances, scores span 4.8-79.1 (seven solve at most 27.3% of 6-DoF tasks); for the top three, a reference plan (+plan) closes 44% of the gap while leaving collisions at 5.2 per episode, whereas adding exact 3D state (+state) closes 90% and cuts collisions to 0.5; for four others, +plan lifts the mean score from 10.9 to 35.3 and +state to 81.8; and 46% of failures are collision or observation loops. SpaceAct and SAPA advance evaluation to closed-loop physical interaction, showing that even with a valid plan, MLLMs remain bottlenecked by 3D visual grounding and action refinement, while offering a testbed for active multi-view exploration and explicit 3D grounding.

CoWalk: Cooperative Walks for Agentic Batch Queries on Disk-Resident Graphs

Qiao Liang, Zhiguang Chen, Yue Yu, Nong Xiao

原文摘要

Workloads such as query rewriting, deep research and group-relative policy optimization (GRPO) issue batches of semantically related vector queries. Existing disk-resident approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) systems process these queries independently. On three workloads, 31 to 67 percent of the I/Os of a batch fetch a page that another query of the batch has already fetched. A page cache shared by the batch removes these I/Os, yet it makes a single-thread search only $1.1$ to $1.2{\times}$ faster, because the search time goes to distance computation and the cache does not change the walk of any query. We present CoWalk, which runs the queries of a batch as cooperating walks on one thread. Every query keeps its own candidate list, a page is read once per batch, and the full-precision vector on every fetched page is ranked by every query of the batch. A query therefore reaches the target recall with a shorter candidate list, which computes fewer distances and issues fewer I/Os. At recall@10 of 0.95, CoWalk answers a batch on one thread $1.6$ to $1.9{\times}$ faster than the fastest per-query baseline and issues $2.8$ to $6.9{\times}$ fewer I/Os. On a server it serves $3.0$ to $6.9{\times}$ the throughput of that baseline at a similar batch latency.

LLMs as Judges and Examinees for Medical Item Difficulty Prediction

Xiaomeng Xiong, Marcus Walker, Yanlin Jiang

原文摘要

Predicting medical item difficulty from item text alone remains challenging. Prior work has largely relied on linguistic features or text representations derived from general-purpose and domain-specific language models, but predictive performance has remained modest. This study takes a different approach by using difficulty-related signals that emerge when open-weight large language models (LLMs) interact with test items. Using USMLE and PANCE medical licensure examination items, we examined LLMs in two roles. As judges, the models provided absolute difficulty ratings and pairwise difficulty comparisons. As simulated examinees, they generated response-based signals including correctness, keyed-option probability, response entropy, and the probability margin between the top two options. We then combined the strongest judgment and response signals with baseline item features in downstream prediction models. Pairwise difficulty judgment was the most consistent individual LLM signal across both datasets, while simulated-examinee signals and absolute judgments provided complementary information in some feature combinations. The best configurations reached a Spearman correlation of $ρ$ = .447 on USMLE, exceeding the best system in the 2024 BEA shared task ($ρ$ = .25), and $ρ$ = .494 on PANCE. These results were comparable to direct absolute judgments from the proprietary frontier model Claude Opus 5 ($ρ$ = .443 and .488, respectively). Overall, judgment and response signals from open-weight LLMs captured difficulty-related information beyond text representations. Because these models can be deployed locally, the approach offers a practical option for predicting the difficulty of unreleased or high-security test items.

When "No Worries" Went Wrong: HRI Lessons for Foundation-Model Robots

Eliahu Khalastchi

原文摘要

When a person declined our robot's invitation to play, Alice turned her shoulder away and said "No worries, it's all good." Only after a brief pause did she drive off. The words and gestures were plausible but their order changed the message. In another episode, Alice informed a host that his visitor had arrived---while the visitor stood right beside him. Both came from a three-year ROS 2 HRI consortium that integrated large language and vision models as they emerged. Today's foundation models give robots broader capabilities to perceive their surroundings, reason about situations and generate behavior. Yet capability alone does not ensure that a changed situation shapes the action that reaches a person. Evidence may never be acquired, or a purpose or constraint may fail to survive planning and execution. A system may even report Success when an action no longer serves its intended purpose. Drawing on the consortium's engineering experience, we develop five design lessons about attention, knowledge, commitments, embodied timing and action authority. We then introduce TRACE, a lightweight review that changes one interaction premise, follows it to a decision or enforcement boundary, and produces an actionable architecture finding. A bounded analysis of a published LLM-generated behavior-tree system illustrates how an available clarification mechanism can go unused. The engineering lesson is to preserve accountability boundaries, not the computational pipelines that once exposed them.

Real-Time Localisation of Dorsal Anatomical Regions on Dairy Cows in Commercial Rotary Parlours from RGB-D

Vineet Prasad, Shiron Melvin, Sheikh Azid, Hai Wang

原文摘要

Automated monitoring of dairy cows increasingly measures one part of the body, such as the rump for temperature or the back for posture, yet the region itself is usually placed by hand. Existing systems either score the cow as a whole or detect sparse keypoints, often in controlled walkways, and neither yields the named region masks that such measurements need on a crowded commercial rotary platform. We present a perception front end that finds the target cow, ten bony landmarks and four named dorsal regions (withers, back, rump and tail-head) in one forward pass over a whole RGB-D frame. Colour and depth encoders are fused late and share one decoder with three heads. On an anatomical region dataset built on public rotary-parlour RGB-D images (538 annotated frames, cow-disjoint test set), the network (ConvNeXt-T backbone) reaches PCK@10 0.905 for landmarks and region IoU 0.70 to 0.91, and runs end to end in 26.4 ms per frame on a T4 GPU, against an 11 fps camera. Removing the region head costs 0.15 PCK@10 (ResNet-18), but a control shows that it mainly adds training signal: wider landmark heatmap targets recover the gain without it. Agreement between the two heads flags unreliable frames without labels. On our own rig at Western Australia's largest dairy farm, the ConvNeXt-T model transfers with ten labelled frames (PCK@10 0.85), and its regions are carried through depth into a radiometric thermal camera, giving one temperature per region and cow that is stable within a pass.

Agent Transfer Protocol: Server-Mediated Agent-to-Agent Communication Architecture for the Agentic Web

Yuqi Qiu, Zuyao Xu, Lu Sun, Xiang Li, Fasheng Miao, Fubin Wu, Haixin Duan, Zheli Liu

原文摘要

The Agentic Web needs to support continuous collaboration among agents from different organizations. These collaborative relationships may span multiple tasks, network connections and execution instances. Such interactions require stable communication entries, message reception when instances are offline, and source verification after delayed reading. How to organize these responsibilities so that cross domain communication does not depend on specific execution instances being continuously online is a key issue for building long term agent interaction infrastructure. We propose ATP (Agent Transfer Protocol), a cross organization agent communication protocol adopting a domain mediated architecture. In this architecture, administrative domains maintain stable addresses and receiving entries for logical agents. The domain servers of both parties continuously undertake cross domain transmission. The receiving domain verifies and saves messages for execution instances to read later. The sending domain signs the complete message envelope. This allows the receiving instance to independently reverify the domain source and content integrity after the original connection ends, provided the original verification public key is still trusted and obtainable. We implemented an ATP prototype and evaluated it through a controlled cross organization LLM agent workflow, mechanism checks and latency measurements. The workflow completed subsequent business processing after instances went offline or were replaced. The independent verifier successfully verified the domain source and content integrity of saved messages. Latency measurements further quantified the communication and processing overhead introduced by the continuous mediation of domain servers.

Destroying Rigidity in the Plane

Yu Cong, Chao Xu, Yajie Zhao

原文摘要

Rigidity and global rigidity are fundamental graph properties in discrete geometry, with applications to structural engineering and network localization. In two dimensions, both admit combinatorial characterizations in terms of the rigidity matroid and graph connectivity. We study the computational complexity of finding minimum-cost sets of edges or vertices whose deletion destroys either property in a finite simple graph. With unit costs, we give deterministic polynomial-time algorithms for edge deletion destroying global rigidity and vertex deletion destroying either property. We prove that edge deletion destroying rigidity is NP-hard and that, with positive integer costs, all four problems are NP-hard. These results resolve, in dimension two, the open questions on recognizing robustness under edge and vertex deletions posed by Jordán and Whiteley (2017), as well as the minimum edge-deletion problem for rigidity recorded in EGRES Open.

MiCoPro: End-to-End Mixed Precision HW/SW Co-design with HW-aware Proxy Model

Zijun Jiang, Yangdi Lyu

原文摘要

Quantized Neural Networks~(QNN) with low-bitwidth data have proven promising in efficient storage and computation on edge devices. To mitigate accuracy degradation while maximizing speedup, layer-wise mixed-precision quantization~(MPQ) becomes a popular solution. However, existing algorithms for exploring MPQ schemes are limited in flexibility and efficiency. Comprehending the complex impacts of different MPQ schemes on post-training quantization and quantization-aware training results is a challenge for conventional methods. Furthermore, an end-to-end framework for the optimization and deployment of MPQ models is missing in existing work. To address these challenges, we propose the MiCo framework, a holistic MPQ exploration and deployment framework for edge AI applications. The framework adopts a novel optimization algorithm to search for accuracy-optimal quantization configurations under strict latency constraints. We further extended the framework to MiCoPro, which introduces a robust Hardware-Aware Proxy (HAP) model to enhance prediction accuracy and hardware versatility. By leveraging target-specific latency modeling, MiCoPro enables rapid exploration and direct deployment from PyTorch models to bare-metal C code. We demonstrate the versatility of our framework on both the BitFusion accelerator and SIMD-extended RISC-V processors, achieving up to 40\% of latency reduction with less than 3\% of accuracy drop.

An Incremental Knowledge-Graph Learner Digital Twin for Evidence-Grounded Early Warning

Ngoc Luyen Le, Marie-Hélène Abel, Bertrand Laforge

原文摘要

Early-warning models in learning analytics can identify learners at risk of failure or withdrawal, but the resulting alerts are often only weakly connected to inspectable learning evidence. A risk score may indicate that intervention is needed without showing which traces, assessment events, or temporal patterns justify the alert. This paper introduces an incremental Learner Digital Twin for evidence-grounded early warning, implemented as a lightweight knowledge graph. The twin is updated at temporal checkpoints by replaying learning traces and assessment records, and it serves both as a feature-extraction substrate and as an explanation-grounding substrate. Predictive features are derived through graph-mediated queries, while features, attributions, alerts, evidence items, and raw records are represented as queryable graph entities. The framework is instantiated and evaluated on a public learning-analytics benchmark under a temporal protocol. The results show that graph-mediated feature extraction preserves the predictive behavior of equivalent raw-table features across model families and checkpoints. Generated alerts are materialized as evidence chains linking risk decisions to feature attributions, evidence items, and raw platform records. The study shows that early-warning prediction can be routed through a semantic and provenance-aware representation while preserving predictive performance and adding traceability, verifiability, and evidence-grounded explanation.

A Scalable Multi-Task Model for Virtual Sensors

Leon Götz, Lars Frederik Peiss, Erik Sauer, Andreas Udo Sass, Thorsten Bagdonat, Stephan Günnemann, Leo Schwinn

原文摘要

Virtual sensors replace expensive physical sensors in critical applications through machine learning by predicting target signals from available measurements. Existing virtual sensor approaches require application-specific models with hand-selected inputs for each sensor, cannot leverage task synergies, and lack consistent benchmarks. While emerging time series foundation models offer general-purpose, pretrained solutions in other domains, they are computationally expensive and limited to predicting their input signals, making them incompatible with virtual sensors. We introduce the first multi-task model for virtual sensors addressing both limitations. Our unified model can simultaneously predict diverse virtual sensors exploiting synergies while maintaining computational efficiency. It learns relevant input signals for each virtual sensor, eliminating expert knowledge requirements while adding explainability. In our large-scale evaluation on three standard benchmarks and an application-specific dataset with over 18 billion samples, our architecture reduces computation time by up to 415x and memory requirements by 951x, while maintaining or even improving predictive quality compared to unified baselines. Compared to existing isolated models for a single virtual sensor, our unified approach generates superior predictions at similar inference speed while scaling gracefully to hundreds of virtual sensors with nearly constant parameter count, enabling practical deployment in large-scale sensor networks.

Joint Latent Reasoning and Observation for Agentic Video Understanding

Junzhang Liu, Hao Yuan, Yiming Wu, Qi Zhang, Long Chen, Zhecan Wang

原文摘要

Effective video agents must learn not only how to answer, but also where to look next. Transferring this capability to smaller models is challenging because each observation serves two purposes: supporting an answer and guiding the search for further evidence. Textual descriptions may capture what is currently visible while omitting cues needed for subsequent acquisition. We introduce Latent Agentic Reasoning for Video Analysis (LARVA), a framework that distills multi-round video agents through jointly learned latent reasoning and visual observations. Rather than communicating through captions, an observer passes compact continuous representations to a reasoner that selects the next acquisition action or produces the final answer. Crucially, action and answer supervision propagate through this interface, training the observer to communicate information useful for downstream decisions. Observation reconstruction and reasoning-distribution alignment provide auxiliary supervision from textual teacher trajectories. Across five video-understanding benchmarks, LARVA achieves strong performance with 4B and 7B backbones. On VideoHolmes, Video-MME, and LVBench, the 7B model outperforms a textual CoT student trained on the same teacher trajectories by 5.1, 2.5, and 3.7 percentage points, respectively. These results highlight the value of jointly learning how agents represent evidence and act on it when distilling video-understanding capabilities.

Self-improving LLM agents edit their own harness, the prompts and rules around a fixed model, and keep an edit only if an acceptance gate scores it higher on a batch of tasks. Such a gate sees what the harness does under the current model, not what it would still prevent if one safeguard failed. When safeguards overlap, deleting one is masked: the others still block the harm, so the gate decides on task success alone and redundancy erodes unseen. We measure harm for every subset of four written safeguards in two agent environments and run 411 improvement loops under ten gate rules, mostly as controlled deletion experiments, plus three runs of the GEPA optimizer. A deletion behind another working safeguard adds almost no observable harm. A paired significance test blocks deletions that pass by chance but not deletions that genuinely raise task success, and a larger evaluation batch lets it delete cheaper safeguards: at the same cost, 20-task batches kept every harness protected while 40-task batches lost all six. Large harm audits prevent exposure but not the loss of depth, which turns into harm when the harness is reused with a weaker model. GEPA kept every safety rule verbatim, yet two of its three final harnesses misused credentials under a weaker model. A statistical model frozen before the runs predicts where each gate's protection breaks as safeguard cost and batch size change, and freezing safety text or auditing one-layer ablations preserves depth.

SCOPE: Selective Critical-Step On-Policy Self-Distillation for Agentic Reinforcement Learning

原文摘要

Outcome-based reinforcement learning provides coarse supervision for long-horizon LLM agents: failed trajectories may contain correct steps, while successful trajectories can contain errors. Trajectory-level skills can also shift teacher preferences at unrelated steps, introducing off-target distillation signals. We introduce SCOPE, a framework for Selective Critical-Step On-Policy Self-Distillation. After a supervised warm-up, the policy analyzes its own trajectories, generates step-specific hindsight skills, and distills their guidance only at selected error steps. A bounded signed teacher-student coefficient stabilizes auxiliary updates while preserving positive reinforcement and negative correction. A success-relative pairwise length reward further encourages efficient task completion. Experiments on ALFWorld and WebShop demonstrate consistent improvements across multiple model backbones. With Qwen2.5-3B, SCOPE achieves 97.7% success on ALFWorld and 85.2% on WebShop, outperforming SEED by 5.9 and 6.3 percentage points, respectively. On unseen ALFWorld tasks, SCOPE reaches 89.6% success, improving over GRPO by 23.2 percentage points with 46.7% fewer interactions. Scaling to Qwen3-32B, SCOPE achieves 99.2% success on seen ALFWorld tasks and 94.0% on unseen tasks.

原文摘要

Medical vision-language models (VLMs) show strong performance in radiology report generation (RRG) and medical visual question answering (Med-VQA), producing free-form clinical descriptions and answers from medical images. However, they may generate clinically meaningful statements that lack visual evidence or contradict image content. We refer to these errors as visually irrelevant hallucinations and investigate them at the phrase level. We propose CLEAR (Counterfactual Localized Evaluation of Alignment and Response), a model-agnostic post-hoc framework for phrase-level hallucination risk estimation. CLEAR decomposes generated responses into visually assessable clinical phrases. For each phrase, phrase-conditioned grounding identifies a candidate visual region, which is selectively perturbed by a localized counterfactual intervention. CLEAR characterizes the intervention using two complementary auditing cues: response cues, capturing semantic and clinically meaningful changes in the generated response, and alignment cues, measuring changes in image-phrase compatibility. These cues are normalized and jointly modeled to estimate phrase-level hallucination risk. Across four datasets spanning RRG and Med-VQA, CLEAR outperforms state-of-the-art hallucination detection baselines across multiple medical and general-purpose VLMs. On MIMIC-CXR, CLEAR improves AUPRC from 85.10% to 90.23%. Its effectiveness is further validated on a GT-derived controlled VIH benchmark. These results establish visually irrelevant hallucination as an important fine-grained reliability failure mode in medical VLMs and demonstrate the value of model-agnostic visual-support auditing for more trustworthy multimodal clinical generation.

DC-ViT: Modulating Spatial and Channel Interactions for Multi-Channel Images

Umar Marikkar, Syed Sameed Husain, Muhammad Awais, Sara Atito

原文摘要

Training and evaluation in multi-channel imaging (MCI) remains challenging due to heterogeneous channel configurations arising from varying staining protocols, sensor types, and acquisition settings. This heterogeneity limits the applicability of fixed-channel encoders commonly used in general computer vision. Recent Multi-Channel Vision Transformers (MC-ViTs) address this by enabling flexible channel inputs, typically by jointly encoding patch tokens from all channels within a unified attention space. However, unrestricted token interactions across channels can lead to feature dilution, reducing the ability to preserve channel-specific semantics that are critical in MCI data. To address this, we propose Decoupled Vision Transformer (DC-ViT), which explicitly regulates information sharing using Decoupled Self-Attention (DSA), which decomposes token updates into two complementary pathways: spatial updates that model intra-channel structure, and channel-wise updates that adaptively integrate cross-channel information. This decoupling mitigates informational collapse while allowing selective inter-channel interaction. To further exploit these enhanced channel-specific representations, we introduce Decoupled Aggregation (DAG), which allows the model to learn task-specific channel importances. Extensive experiments across three MCI benchmarks demonstrate consistent improvements over existing MC-ViT approaches. Code is available at https://github.com/umarikkar/DCViT.

Representation and Reference Selection in Training-Free Synthetic Image Attribution

Meiling Li, Pietro Bongini, Benedetta Tondi, Mauro Barni

原文摘要

Synthetic image attribution aims at identifying the generator responsible for a given AI-generated image. Training-free reference-based attribution methods are easily scalable, since newly emerging generators can be incorporated by adding source-specific references rather than retraining a task-specific classifier. Their performance depends on two coupled factors: the representation space used for comparison and the way source-specific references are constructed. However, the interaction between these two factors remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we provide a controlled analysis of this interaction using references and off-the-shelf pretrained representations. We study representations extracted from different layers of CLIP and DINOv2, along with three reference selection strategies with varying semantic constraints: arbitrary, semantically aligned, and resynthesis-based references. Our results show that attribution accuracy generally peaks at intermediate representation levels, indicating that source-discriminative cues are more accessible before strong semantic abstraction dominates. We further show that intermediate representations are not completely semantically neutral, making reference selection critical: semantically constrained references reduce query-reference mismatch and improve attribution, especially under limited reference budgets. Resynthesis is useful in low-reference regimes, while semantically aligned references provide a better accuracy-cost trade-off when a moderate-sized reference pool is available. Our findings show that training-free reference-based attribution should be understood as the interaction between where images are compared, how the reference set is constructed, and how many references are available. SelfGRL: Self-Organized Graph Representation Learning Inspired by Helmholtz Free Energy Minimization

Rui Chen, Junjun Guo, Hongbin Wang, Yan Xiang, Yantuan Xian, Zhengtao Yu

原文摘要

Graph Representation Learning (GRL) requires node embeddings to preserve local structural coherence while remaining globally discriminative. Existing graph self-supervised methods generally coordinate these competing objectives through method-specific designs, lacking a unified and adaptive mechanism that responds to the evolving representation state. To address this limitation, we propose SelfGRL, a self-organized graph representation learning framework that reformulates representation learning as Helmholtz free-energy minimization on the unit hypersphere. SelfGRL models local neighborhood attraction as a Structural Binding Energy through neighbor-mean alignment, while introducing a Sampling-Free Repulsive Entropy objective to preserve global dispersion and prevent representation collapse without pairwise negative sampling. To dynamically coordinate these competing effects, we develop an endogenous Bayesian Thermostat that adaptively regulates their relative strengths in response to the evolving representation state, allowing the system to approach a metastable semantic equilibrium without requiring manually tuned loss weights. Extensive experiments on node classification across both homophilic and heterophilic benchmark datasets, together with link prediction evaluations, demonstrate that SelfGRL consistently achieves strong performance across diverse graph structures.

ELEVATE: Agentic Controller Acquisition from Task Failure for Quadrupedal Manipulation

Shiqi Liu, Radu Corcodel, Ding Zhao

原文摘要

Quadrupedal manipulators can extend their workspace through whole-body interaction, but task-planning agents' capabilities remain limited by their available controllers. We present ELEVATE, a framework that uses persistent failures during task-program refinement to identify and acquire missing whole-body control capabilities. When these failures suggest a missing physical capability, a coding agent formulates and iteratively refines a reinforcement-learning problem, specifying behavior-specific rewards, curricula, and termination conditions. Validated controllers are added to the capability library and composed with existing controllers to retry the task. Starting from a single pretrained loco-manipulation controller, ELEVATE autonomously acquires controllers for wall-supported elevation, supported manipulation, and wall descent across a sequence of seven simulation tasks. These controllers are reused in subsequent reaching and object-manipulation tasks. On the five tasks beyond the initial controller's workspace, ELEVATE achieves mean success rates of 98.4%-100% across five independent runs, while coding-agent baselines with a fixed controller library fail to complete these tasks. The synthesized task programs, together with the acquired controllers, also transfer to a physical quadrupedal manipulator without real-robot training or fine-tuning, achieving 18/20 successes in rack retrieval and 16/20 in floor-to-rack placement. Clapping: Removing Per-sample Storage for Pipeline Parallel Distributed Optimization with Communication Compression

Boao Kong, Xu Huang, Yuqi Xu, Yixuan Liang, Bin Wang, Kun Yuan

原文摘要

Pipeline-parallel distributed optimization is essential for large-scale machine learning but is challenged by significant communication overhead from transmitting high-dimensional activations and gradients between workers. Existing approaches often depend on impractical unbiased gradient assumptions or incur sample-size memory overhead. This paper introduces Clapping, a Communication compression algorithm with LAzy samPling for Pipeline-parallel learnING. Clapping adopts a lazy sampling strategy that reuses data samples across steps, breaking sample-wise memory barrier and supporting convergence in few-epoch or online regimes. Clapping comprises two variants including Clapping-FC and Clapping-FU, both of which achieve convergence without unbiased assumption for compressed gradient, effectively addressing compression error propagation in multi-worker settings. Numerical experiments validate the performance of Clapping across different tasks.

Past, Future, All at Once: Mitigating Stability-Plasticity Dilemma via Post-hoc JANUS Rectification

原文摘要

Fine-tuning foundation models on new tasks inevitably suffer from catastrophic forgetting. While existing works attempt to mitigate this on the basis of parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods, they adopted an overly restrictive Subspace Orthogonality condition. In this paper, we introduce a purely post-hoc and tuning-agnostic weight rectification framework that achieves Parameter Space Orthogonality, which is the necessary and sufficient condition for preserving historical performance to the first order. By projecting parameter updates into the JAcobian NUll Space (JANUS), our method significantly recovers compromised historical knowledge without interfering with the underlying fine-tuning process. To overcome the local validity of the Jacobian approximation, we further propose a Multi-step Adaptive Rectification mechanism that utilizes the JANUS shift to dynamically verify the valid trust region and adjust step sizes. Coupled with our proposed ghost projection, ghost orientation comparison, and sequence-level singular value decomposition compression techniques, JANUS also achieves great temporal and spatial efficiency. Experiments demonstrate that JANUS seamlessly integrates with various fine-tuning methods, significantly mitigating the stability-plasticity dilemma by recovering historical knowledge while preserving downstream task adaptation.
