DUEL: Exact Likelihood Reshapes Masked Diffusion Scaling Laws and Beyond

Gilad Turok, Yair Schiff, Chris De Sa, Volodymyr Kuleshov

原文摘要

Masked diffusion models (MDMs) are trained to predict tokens in every order but generate in one. As such, MDM likelihood is an intractable sum over all orders. The evidence lower bound (ELBO) is used as a proxy for likelihood, but it is a loose bound and assumes positions are unmasked uniformly at random. Frontier MDMs, however, select positions with deterministic rules such as confidence. To resolve this mismatch we introduce DUEL, a framework that unifies common deterministic MDM samplers. DUEL computes the likelihood exactly, under the sampler that is actually used during generation. DUEL is a simple plug-and-play algorithm applicable to any pretrained MDM with no retraining. To compute the likelihood of a text sequence, simply replay generation, reveal the true tokens instead of sampled ones, and sum their log-probabilities. Evaluating with DUEL instead of the ELBO changes what we conclude about MDMs. The perplexity gap between MDMs and autoregressive (AR) models shrinks by up to 32% in-domain and 82% zero-shot. In scaling laws, the reported 16x MDM-AR compute gap falls to 9x under DUEL, showing over 1/3 of it is an evaluation artifact. Scoring multiple-choice answers with likelihood via DUEL instead of the ELBO improves LLaDA-8B accuracy on all six tasks, by up to 9.7 points. DUEL also selects samplers correctly: it matches a gold-standard LLM judge on every decided comparison, which generative perplexity and MAUVE fail to do. DUEL reveals that MDMs are more competitive with AR models than the ELBO suggests.

When Vision Overrides Language: Evaluating and Mitigating Counterfactual Failures in VLAs

Yu Fang, Yuchun Feng, Dong Jing, Jiaqi Liu, Yue Yang, Zhenyu Wei, Daniel Szafir, Mingyu Ding

原文摘要

Vision-Language-Action models (VLAs) promise to ground language instructions in robot control, yet in practice often fail to follow language faithfully. When presented with instructions that lack strong scene-specific supervision, VLAs suffer from counterfactual failures: they act based on vision shortcuts induced by dataset biases, repeatedly executing well-learned behaviors and selecting objects frequently seen during training regardless of language intent. To support systematic study, we introduce LIBERO-CF, the first counterfactual benchmark for VLAs that evaluates language following capability by assigning alternative, feasible task instructions under the same LIBERO scene layouts. Our evaluation reveals that counterfactual failures are prevalent yet underexplored across state-of-the-art VLAs. To mitigate these failures, we propose Counterfactual Action Guidance (CAG), a simple yet effective dual-branch inference scheme that explicitly strengthens language conditioning in VLAs. CAG combines a standard VLA policy with a parallel language-unconditioned branch, amplifying the difference between their action predictions induced by language instructions. This design reduces reliance on vision shortcuts, improves robustness on counterfactual tasks, and requires neither additional demonstrations nor modifications to the base VLA architecture or its pretrained weights. Extensive experiments demonstrate consistent improvements across diverse VLAs. On LIBERO-CF, our training-free variant, TF-CAG, improves $π_{0.5}$ by 9.7% in language grounding and 3.6% in task success. When using a separate Vision-Action (VA) module, VA-CAG achieves larger gains of 15.5% and 8.5%, respectively. In real-world evaluations, VA-CAG improves language grounding by 9.4% and task success by 17.2% on average.

Stochastic Dynamics of Generative AI: From Autoregressive Models to Interacting LLM Networks and Neural SDEs

Vikram Krishnamurthy, Yiming Zhang, Luke Snow

原文摘要

This paper develops a stochastic dynamical-systems perspective on three classes of generative AI models. First, we formulate large language models (LLMs) as high-dimensional nonlinear autoregressive models with attention-based dependencies. This formulation connects pretraining by conditional maximum likelihood to sequential token generation and provides a probabilistic interpretation of LLM operation. Second, we consider networks of interacting LLMs and characterize their collective behavior through mean-field ordinary differential equations. These dynamics provide a framework for understanding emergent preferential attachment and persistent structural biases, including type-dependent glass-ceiling effects. Third, we consider neural stochastic differential equations (SDEs) as continuous-time generative models for stochastic trajectories, including those observed at irregular time intervals. We discuss their training with particular emphasis on Wiener-space cubature methods based on rough-path analysis as an efficient alternative to Monte Carlo estimation. Together, the three settings address probabilistic prediction, information exchange and emergent behavior in interacting networks, and path-space generative modeling.

How Contextual Information in Physical Environments Shapes Decisions with AI

Omar Elgohary, Amanda Elvarsdottir, Vannessa Lee, Zhu-Tian Chen

原文摘要

AI assistants in augmented reality may advise users about parts of the physical world they cannot directly observe. We ask whether contextual information from the situation helps users make better decisions with fallible AI. In an AR visual- search study (N = 32), we varied target prevalence and scene visibility while participants judged whether a key was present, with or without AI assistance. Lowering target prevalence and revealing part of the desk together improved observed AI-assisted accuracy, but our analysis did not demonstrate that this gain came from participants making better use of context. Context also changed which answers seemed plausible: when keys were rare, participants became more skeptical of Present suggestions, but this shift applied to both correct and incorrect suggestions rather than improving selective acceptance of correct advice. Revealing part of the desk also increased decision time, with little evidence of better AI use. Overall, contextual information can shape AI- assisted decisions and increase decision effort without necessarily helping users judge when the AI is correct.

SD-LoRA: Training-Time Structural Distillation into LoRA for Few-Shot Vision-Language Adaptation

Mohammed Rahman Sherif Khan Mohammad, Ardhendu Behera, Sandip Pradhan, Swagat Kumar, Yonghuai Liu

原文摘要

Few-shot adaptation of vision-language models must balance two competing goals: learning fine-grained visual distinctions from very limited supervision and preserving the efficiency that makes frozen CLIP-like models attractive for deployment. Existing lightweight adaptation methods, including prompt tuning, LoRA, and cache-based adapters, typically supervise global image embeddings and therefore underuse token-level structure. Conversely, structure-aware methods exploit local evidence but often introduce additional inference-time computation. We propose SD-LoRA, a structural distillation framework that uses token-level graph reasoning only during training and transfers its effects into a lightweight LoRA-adapted CLIP model. During training, a heterogeneous graph teacher models patch-patch, global-local, and visual-text relations over high-resolution ViT tokens. Rather than retaining this graph at test time, SD-LoRA transfers its structural bias into the shared CLIP-LoRA backbone through implicit distillation and Prototype Predictive Alignment, which aligns graph-conditioned representations with support-derived class prototypes. At inference, the graph teacher is discarded; prediction requires only a single CLIP-LoRA forward pass and a cache-based classifier. Across 11 few-shot benchmarks, SD-LoRA improves over a strong CLIP-LoRA baseline by 2.4/1.8/3.0/2.4/2.0 percentage points in the 1/2/4/8/16-shot settings, respectively, without additional graph computation at test time. Results on base-to-novel generalization, cross-dataset transfer, out-of-distribution robustness, and calibration further show that training-time structural supervision improves both accuracy and transfer reliability. Code is available at https://github.com/MR-Sherif/SD-LoRA.git.

Logically Augmented Quantum LDPC Codes: Construction and Hierarchical Decoding

Sheida Rabeti, Ayushi Shirke, Ivana Dimitrova, Hessam Mahdavifar

原文摘要

We propose a joint framework for constructing and decoding Logically Augmented (LA) quantum low-density parity-check (QLDPC) codes. This is motivated by the need for flexible coding rates and adaptive error protection while preserving block length and code structure. On the construction side, we use an auxiliary \textit{Logical Protection Code (LPC)} to impose additional stabilizer constraints on selected logical qubits of a \textit{primary} code. On the decoding side, the proposed decoder uses the LPC syndrome to generate logical error hypotheses and condition belief propagation (BP) on each hypothesis. The proposed \textit{Hierarchical Logical List Decoder (HLLD)} is invoked only when the initial BP decoder for primary code fails to converge. It then selects the correction with the smallest Hamming weight among the syndrome-consistent candidates produced by hypothesis-conditioned BP runs. For numerical evaluation, we focus on short repetition LPCs, which provide a flexible means of trading rate for additional error protection. Each LPC syndrome admits exactly two logical error hypotheses, irrespective of repetition length, which enables HLLD to explore both possibilities without relying on a single logical estimate. Numerical results show that varying the repetition length provides a tunable trade-off between rate and error-correction performance across a wide range of primary code constructions and their operating regimes. On the decoding side, with the overall LA code held fixed, HLLD reduces the logical error rate by up to 81\%, 75\%, and 69\% for LA codes based on mitten, lifted-product, and bivariate bicycle codes, respectively, compared with conventional BP decoding of the same LA codes.

Segment What It Can Draw: Querying a Text-to-Image Generator with Its Own Images for Skin Lesion Segmentation

Hongyu Cao, Guangfu Guo, Jinghan Zhang, Dakshak Keerthi Chandra, Ying Zhang, Kunpeng Liu

原文摘要

Skin lesion segmentation without annotated masks requires the target to be specified through other cues. Existing approaches rely on dermoscopy-specific rules, annotation-derived model priors, or user-selected regions. A general text-to-image diffusion transformer offers a text interface to the target, but its concept-word attention is unreliable on dermoscopy images: in the model's attention-output space, the word-derived skin-to-lesion direction is poorly aligned with the direction separating real skin from real lesions. We show that the direction derived from generated healthy-skin and lesion images is substantially better aligned. Based on this finding, we propose GENIQ, a training-free method that constructs initial skin and lesion prototypes from generated images and refines them using the most skin-like and lesion-like patches from unlabelled dermoscopy images. It scores test patches along the refined direction and applies a gated threshold to suppress contextual spill-over around small lesions. Without inference-time annotations or additional models, GENIQ achieves Dice scores of 0.85-0.88 on three dermoscopy test sets. It outperforms zero-shot and word-based attention methods on all three sets, and a hand-designed dermoscopy pipeline in Dice and IoU on two.

Reportable Shortcuts with RLBWTs

Travis Gagie

原文摘要

Backward search over a run-length compressed Burrows-Wheeler transform (RLBWT) takes one step per pattern character, even when long stretches of the pattern match material that recurs throughout a highly repetitive collection. We describe shortcuts: for a precomputed set of pairs $(α,β)$ of strings, a backward search that has just matched $β$ and finds $α$ immediately to its left in the pattern can cross $α$ in one step. Since a shortcut is taken only after its pair has been recognized in the pattern, the search returns a report of the shortcuts it took along with the usual BWT interval. Our motivation is pangenome graphs, where such pairs mark the places where a pattern passes through a vertex, so the report gives the path a match takes through the graph. We work out the case of a single linear reference $R$, with $β$ ranging over the length-$\ell$ windows of $R$ starting at multiples of $\ell$, and $α$ over the $2^t \ell$ characters preceding such a window. We show that the search counts correctly, that under stated conditions it crosses a stretch of the pattern matching $m$ consecutive windows of $R$ with $O(\log m + m / 2^τ)$ shortcuts, where $2^τ\ell$ is the longest shortcut, and that the shortcuts can be built efficiently from the RLBWT. On the Pizza&Chili cere collection of 37 genomes, shortcuts make backward search 2.3 to 4.2 times faster on exact patterns of length 200 to 1000, and 1.7 to 2.0 times faster with 1% of the characters substituted, for 86% more space. On 11 gigabases of genomes of seven bacterial species, they make it 1.6 to 1.9 times faster on exact patterns for 32% more space. On whole chromosome 19 haplotypes against 16 to 64 others from the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium, shortcuts in both directions make Boyer-Moore-Li search for maximal exact matches of length at least 1000 about 8 times faster.

Can Statistics Tell Whether an Undeciphered Text Is Language? Calibrated Tests on the Voynich Manuscript

Xin Zhang, Victor S. Sheng

原文摘要

Statistics are often the only evidence of whether a text in an unread script records a language, but meaningless text shares many of them. A test means little until it is run on texts whose answer is known. We build such tests and apply them to the Voynich manuscript, whose text may be meaningless copying or a language hidden by a cipher. We write both accounts as programs, fit them with the same search budget and check them on held-out statistics. The copying process of Timm and Schinner predicts these statistics better than any cipher with one key, but ciphers with two keys, or that encode only the word classes of a real text, do equally well. A trace of language that needs no decipherment says more. In 28 texts in 16 natural languages the same word pairs keep sharing a line, and the manuscript shows this at half the strength of the weakest. Word codes fall to this level only with heavy miscopying or a plaintext whose word pairs recur weakly, such as abbreviated Latin. Solvers that read enciphered controls find nothing readable in the manuscript under letter ciphers, word codes or codes with one word per letter or syllable. One cipher remains, a nomenclator with two keys, which writes frequent words whole and spells the rest, and whose scribe miscopies more than half of the words. Our tests exclude it in all languages but Arabic and Hebrew. Planted messages show that a short message could still hide.

A hierarchy of physics-embedded neural operators for structural dynamic surrogate modelingA hierarchy of physics-embedded neural operators for structural dynamic surrogate modeling

Amir Ansrollahi, Mehmet Sefa Orak

原文摘要

Structural-response surrogates must capture moving resonances, phase changes, and unequal-amplitude transfer channels during optimization or health-state changes. Physics-embedded learning seeks FEA-level accuracy at lower cost by embedding physics in inputs, forward passes, losses, and backpropagation. We propose Modal Rational (MR), mapping structural features to modal quantities for analytical frequency-response reconstruction. The Physics-Guided Modal Operator Network (PGMON) adds bounded frequency, damping, and residual-flexibility corrections. Modal Operator with Structural GELU and Anchored-SIREN Correction (MOSAIC) denotes the bounded spectral-discrepancy framework used here; MOSAIC-MR and MOSAIC-PGMON add such discrepancies. They support finite-dimensional maps and physical decoders for future neural operators; evidence is fixed-topology, not a completed operator comparison. Two 20,000-design populations are studied: an 80 m steel truss tower with variable member areas and attached masses, and a tapered shell beam with ten variable station masses. Archived tests cover ten designs and seven acceleration histories per structure; they are benchmarks, not seismic-design assessments. With 5% reference modal damping, MR, PGMON, and MOSAIC give mean displacement-history errors of 0.73-0.76% for the tower and 0.029-0.116% for the beam, against declared band-limited modal references. Supplied modal frequencies are distinguished from design-only use; unequal parameter counts and training settings are explicit. Error analysis separates learned modal discrepancies, truncation, and excitation weighting, explaining acceleration and difficult-tower limits and risks of blind use. Results support physically structured prediction but limit claims about generalization, computational savings, and added corrections. Next is developing and validating neural operators around these architectures.

Entering the Elite, But Remaining Outside Its Core? The Temporal Structure of Gender Inequality in the Global Citation

Marek Kwiek

原文摘要

This study analyzed the gender dynamics of the global citation elite using the annual Top 2% Stanford/Elsevier lists for 2019-2024. While previous analyses have discussed women s representation (inclusion), I discuss what happens once male and female scientists are within the elite (position and persistence). The database used included 1.22 million person-year observations (N = 1,216,089) and 465,707 unique scientists and scholars from more than 150 countries. I studied entry, exit, and permanent membership in the elite. The share of women in the top 2% increased from 18.35% in 2019 to 20.85% in 2024. However, women were more strongly represented among first-observed entrants than among continuing members, and their share decreased from 21.58% among single-year members to 17.69% among scientists present in all six annual lists. Women were located closer to the lower boundary of the elite in terms of citation index deciles (the lowest decile included 26.88% of women). Men, in contrast, were closer to its upper boundary (the highest decile included only 15.23% of women). Logistic regression models estimated a lower probability of women s membership in the durable core of the elite (odds ratio estimate [OR] = 0.886). Consequently, increasing the inclusion of women in the elite does not mean their equal position within or equal persistence of membership in it. I draw conclusions about temporal gender dynamics within the global citation elite and gender inequalities in science more generally.

Expanding the Quality-Coverage Frontier with Competitive Flow Matching

Wenxuan Peng, Richard Zhang, Haitian Zheng, Jaskirat Singh, Tsai-Shien Chen, Eli Shechtman, Bharath Hariharan, Hadar Averbuch-Elor 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Flow matching (FM) generators often face a quality-coverage tradeoff. Inference-time techniques such as classifier-free guidance raise quality, but at the cost of coverage. We hypothesize this limitation stems from a basic property of the objective: an intermediate noisy image could correspond to many clean images, yet the model can only predict a single velocity, at best averaging over the multiple possibilities. To mitigate this, we introduce competition among predictions during training. We achieve this by augmenting the predictor with a randomly drawn low-dimensional conditioning code $z$. For each training example, we sample $K$ values of $z$ to produce $K$ candidate velocities that compete to explain the target, and apply the loss only to the best-matching candidate. This winner-take-all objective allows different modes to shape different predictions, rather than being averaged into a single compromise. Furthermore, this term naturally enables a new form of guidance, auxiliary conditioning scaling, which complements traditional guidance methods. Together, these two guidance mechanisms show that our method substantially improves the quality-coverage frontier. We validate on ImageNet-256, using two different testbeds, SiT and RAEv2. Given less than 3% of the original SiT pretraining compute for post-training, at the 67% Recall point, our method reduces $\mathrm{FD}_{r,6}$ from 19.22 to 5.91. On RAEv2, at the 70% Recall point, it reduces $\mathrm{FD}_{r,6}$ from 16.83 to 3.18.

Value Over Language Model: Detecting Original Contribution in Writing

Vibhhu Sharma, Thorsten Joachims, Sarah Dean

原文摘要

LLMs have been rapidly adopted across writing tasks, prompting the development of tools for detecting LLM-generated text. Yet, these tools largely measure how much of a document's surface text was written by an LLM and aren't fundamentally designed to measure how much of the information content or ideas originated from the LLM itself rather than being supplied by the user in the prompt. In this work, we design a framework that measures how much value a person adds on top of what a language model could have easily produced by itself. The method requires no training or labeled data and never scores the document's surface text, insulating it from stylistic confounders. Instead, it extracts the document's content at increasing levels of granularity, uses an LLM to reconstruct the document from each partial representation, and compares these reconstructions with those produced from the task description alone. We call this framework Value Over Language Model (VOLM), which measures a document's contribution relative to a replacement-level document that an LLM could produce from the task description alone. We evaluate VOLM with a specific instantiation of this framework across three domains: news articles, ICLR peer reviews, and argumentative essays. VOLM separates human-authored documents from matched LLM-generated documents produced from generic task descriptions, while remaining substantially invariant to content-preserving transformations, including LLM-based reconstruction and round-trip translation. We further find that increasingly constrained content extractors reduce residual differences between LLM-generated and humanized text, demonstrating the importance of disentangling informational content from stylistic variation. We hope these results encourage further work on specialized instantiations of the framework and on assessing human contributions in LLM-assisted writing more generally.

Reclassification Is All You Missed: Surfacing Variant Reinterpretation Need in Online Health Communities at Population Scale

Kamalakkannan Ravi, Mengshu Nie, Annapurna Poduri, Cong Liu

原文摘要

Genetic variants are routinely reclassified in ClinVar after a patient is tested, sometimes from uncertain to pathogenic, yet patient recontact is inconsistent, with no clear duty and responsibility diffused among labs, providers, and patients. Many affected people discuss their results in public online health communities that clinical recontact often does not reach. We built PRISM, an agentic large-language-model pipeline that screens these posts, checks whether the variant was later reclassified, and drafts a disclaimer-bearing outreach message, in a no-contact dry run. Across 3.9 million posts from 32 communities, agent-predicted reinterpretation-relevant discussion is rare (0.288%) but concentrated in specialist genetics communities (6.30% versus 0.10% in general medical-advice communities) and growing fivefold since 2014; PRISM surfaces 123 candidate classification differences, 5 of them from an uncertain submission to pathogenic or likely pathogenic. On a held-out set of 30 real-post drafts, a clinician judged 27 factually grounded and 15 fit to send: factual accuracy is necessary but not sufficient for clinically acceptable outreach. PRISM contributes a population-scale reinterpretation-need map with code and data to be released upon publication.

Robustness of Internal Signals for Hallucination Detection in Vision-Language Models

Allison Chen, William Yang, Salma Abdel Magid, Jonathan Williams, Olga Russakovsky, Esin Tureci

原文摘要

When given an image and a text prompt, vision-language models (VLMs) can produce seemingly sophisticated text responses. However, they are also prone to hallucinate objects in their output, which can have detrimental consequences in safety-critical applications. To detect these hallucinations, certain methods interestingly leverage internal signals from the VLM as it generates the text response; potentially, these methods use the same signals that led to a hallucination to detect it. We conduct an in-depth analysis to understand the robustness of these detection methods. First, we show that a naive baseline of a generated word's token position in the VLM text response achieves competitive performance. Further, we reveal how some detection methods rely on token position and use this heuristic as a shortcut. Second, we explore detection methods' sensitivity to language and vision modalities. Our experiments suggest that strong detection performance is often driven by detecting language-based hallucinations, and when methods rely on token position, they tend to be less visually grounded and exhibit reduced robustness when hallucinations occur earlier in a text response. Lastly, we demonstrate that different detection methods can carry complementary signals; when ensembling methods together, adding weaker methods to an ensemble of higher performing ones still offers performance improvements. Altogether, while there may be useful internal VLM signals to detect hallucinations, our investigation reveals important limitations of the current methods that try to leverage them.

Closed-Loop Agent Evaluation: Layered Measurement and Self-Calibration

Ruifeng Ren, Gun Ahn

原文摘要

Once an agent is live, teams want to know whether it is doing its job, not just whether it throws errors. Yet most evaluation is one-off: a benchmark run, a look at traces, a single score. Its conclusions neither check themselves nor reach the agent. We propose closed-loop evaluation, an evaluation method for deployed agents. It models evaluation as performance estimation under biased raters and censored outcomes, and it requires every level's conclusion to trace back to atomic data and to be computed by versioned rules. The method covers four levels of analysis (span, trace, conversation and engagement), measures along a spine of Execution, Substance, Trajectory and Results, treats Conduct as a constraint throughout, and uses Provenance and Adjudication components to certify the evidence and the evaluators. Evaluator agents generated by an Agent Factory carry these components, each with a domain knowledge pack and an adapter harness. Two loops close the evaluation: an inner loop audits the evidence, rules and metrics themselves, and an outer loop uses per-component regression checks to drive agent improvement. We also give a pipeline that runs this process automatically. Using the business-analysis agent SharpInsight as a case and porting the method to public conversation data, we show how problems differ across levels and how evidence-and-rule judgment is more reliable than holistic scoring (ICC 0.86 vs. 0.81; kappa 0.81 vs. 0.63).

Authorization Propagation in Agent2Agent Systems: An Experimental Security Evaluation of Multi-Hop Delegation

Gabriele Donno, Kashif Mehmood, Katina Kralevska

原文摘要

Delegated Agent2Agent (A2A) workflows create a security problem when the agent sending a request is different from the principal from which the authority originated. This paper evaluates a layered downstream-verification design in a synthetic four-party healthcare reimbursement workflow. The prototype separates current-caller context, transitive authorization evidence, per-hop Ed25519 request authentication, and independent replay state for requests and authorization artifacts. Of 15 adversarial conditions, 14 are rejected; an isolated delegation-path test exposes the absence of semantic authority attenuation. A separate authorized-intermediary experiment shows that a holder of the shared authorization-evidence HMAC key can modify the represented authority and generate valid evidence. In the fixed-depth local benchmark, the full configuration has a median security-processing latency of 5.11 ms and a 3.87 kB serialized payload. The results show the value of separating request authentication from inherited authority while identifying origin-verifiable delegation and semantic attenuation as requirements for stronger A2A authorization propagation.

Gaussians Can Subtract: Neural Dissolve Fields for Hybrid Scene Rendering

Yiyan Wang, Haohan Liu, Tetsuo Shibuya

原文摘要

Hybrid Mesh-Gaussian rendering combines compact textured surfaces with flexible 3D Gaussian primitives, offering an efficient alternative to purely Gaussian scene representations for structured environments. Existing scene-reconstruction hybrids commonly follow an additive formulation, where Gaussian residuals compensate for errors left by the mesh. However, not every Mesh-Gaussian conflict is caused by missing content: residual geometry errors, occlusion mismatch, texture-projection artifacts, and view-dependent appearance can make the same mesh content consistent in one view but inconsistent in another. We therefore formulate hybrid rendering as a multi-view inconsistency problem and present Gaussolve, a subtract-and-refill framework that selectively dissolves inconsistent mesh content before residual Gaussians refill the revealed regions. We introduce a lightweight Neural Dissolve Field, parameterized by scalar spherical-harmonic Gaussians, to learn where and from which viewing directions mesh content should be dissolved. A continuous transmittance fusion rule progressively exposes residual Gaussians behind the dissolved mesh, preserving their reconstruction gradients and avoiding hard visibility discontinuities. Experiments on structured and semi-structured scenes demonstrate higher visual fidelity with fewer Gaussian primitives and faster rendering. Adapting the Process of Adaptation: Darwinian, Lamarckian, and Agent-Directed Evolution in AI

Andrew W. Lo, Chaoyi Zhao

原文摘要

Evolution has shaped intelligence for billions of years. Artificial intelligence (AI) now raises a striking possibility: intelligence may begin to direct its own evolution. As AI agents become capable of modifying and evaluating their own behavior, how quickly could they improve, and how can that improvement remain safe? We develop a theoretical framework comparing Darwinian, Lamarckian, and agent-directed evolution following environmental change. Darwinian evolution relies on natural selection, Lamarckian evolution adds inherited learning, and agent-directed evolution allows agents to generate and evaluate behavioral variants and choose how extensively to search. When learning is sufficiently effective, these mechanisms exhibit progressively faster adaptation. Generating more variants accelerates adaptation, while optimal search effort depends on learning ability, problem difficulty, and experimentation costs. However, an agent's ability to direct its improvement does not ensure that improvements are evaluated against the intended objective. When the evaluation target is misspecified, additional search accelerates convergence toward the wrong behavior, even as measured performance improves. In recursive self-improvement, such errors may persist across generations, posing challenges for AI safety. Independent evaluation and oversight must keep pace with autonomous AI development. The central challenge is not simply to accelerate the evolution of intelligence, but to preserve humanity's ability to guide its direction, limit its speed, and intervene when necessary.

Polynomial Lower Bounds for Steiner Shortcuts via Test Functions

Aaron Bernstein, Henry Fleischmann, Bernhard Haeupler, Gary Hoppenworth, Thatchaphol Saranurak

原文摘要

The Steiner shortcut problem asks whether every directed graph $G=(V,E)$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges admits an augmentation $G_{+}=(V\cup V_{+},E\cup E_{+})$ with $m^{1+o(1)}$ edges such that $G_+$ has the same reachability structure as $G$ (i.e. for all $s,t\in V$, $s$ reaches $t$ in $G$ iff $s$ reaches $t$ in $G_+$), and the diameter of $G_{+}$ is $m^{o(1)}$. This is a core combinatorial question underlying many reachability algorithms in the dynamic, streaming, and CONGEST models, and all parallel algorithms with almost-linear work and sublinear depth. A sequence of works ruled out such a shortcut $G_{+}$ in the non-Steiner setting where $V_{+}=\emptyset$. However, as recently shown by Bernstein et al. [STOC '26], all known non-Steiner lower-bound constructions fail once Steiner vertices $V_{+}$ are allowed. This paper rules out almost-optimal Steiner shortcuts: we show an infinite family of graphs $G=(V,E)$ with the property that, for any $\varepsilon>0$, a Steiner shortcut $G_{+}=(V\cup V_{+},E\cup E_{+})$ with $m^{1+\varepsilon}$ edges must have diameter at least $n^{1/56-O(\varepsilon)}$. Our construction strengthens the standard non-Steiner lower-bound framework via an additional structure that allows Steiner vertices to be replaced by original vertices; we can then reduce back to the standard arguments without Steiner vertices. This new structure is achieved via a new general strategy based on test functions, which is quite flexible and can potentially be extended to applications beyond our work. We also generalize our lower bound to exact Steiner hopsets in undirected graphs and to depth reduction for monotone circuits. The latter significantly strengthens the classical lower bound based on Sylvester matrices.

Follow the Policy, Fail the Benchmark: Auditing and Revising Policy-Based Decision Benchmarks

Yanru Xiao, Yifei Cai

原文摘要

Policy-based decision benchmarks evaluate whether systems apply written rules to financial and operational cases. Yet a rule-following response can be marked wrong when the benchmark misstates the required decision. We audit nine public policy-based decision benchmarks through source tracing, program execution, and controlled checks. We find unsupported targets, reference errors that survive replay or propagate as solved steps, and evaluators that reject acceptable answers or credit incomplete decisions. To measure the scoring impact, we rescore unchanged model responses. On the 96 LegalBench SARA numeric cases, correcting the scorer raises acceptance by more than 80 percentage points for each of three models, without changing references or responses. In RuleArena Tax, restoring a required zero floor changes 27 of 300 references and narrows an observed model gap. A controlled federal-exemption task with explicit ownership and eligibility assumptions also shows that errors in supplied intermediate answers can affect final decisions. We present BAR (Benchmark Audit and Revision), a versioned collection of audit evidence and revisions for reevaluation.

An LLM-Orchestrated Neuro-Symbolic Framework for Verifying Diagnostic Signal Reachability in Electronic Systems

Heba Jaradat, Mohammed-Khalil Ghali, Saurabh Kulkarni, Rohan Kulkarni, Sangwon Yoon

原文摘要

Diagnostic Signal Reachability (DSR) captures whether board-level health signals are observable by management controllers, including baseboard management controllers (BMCs), complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), and other smart controllers. Verifying DSR is essential for field diagnosability in datacenter fleets, where one design is deployed at massive scale, yet it remains largely manual, since each signal is traced by hand across schematic sheets, renamed nets, series components, and monitoring devices. Large language models (LLMs) are attractive but unreliable at structural connectivity reasoning, where over-claiming can silently hide a rare coverage gap. We present NetFlow-DSR, a neuro-symbolic framework in which an LLM orchestrates the DSR pipeline and resolves device roles mainly from part-name families and library pin names, consulting specifications only for ambiguous parts. Pin directionality is read from the design library, and deterministic graph engines verify connectivity over the authoritative netlist. The pipeline detects diagnostic nets, canonicalizes renamed net fragments, and performs controller-seeded, power-aware breadth-first search over an admissibility graph that credits device-mediated monitoring. Each verdict carries an auditable trace card whose proof path is the witness. Across five production boards from an AI platform, covering 421 expert-graded signals, a three-stage ablation improves pooled F1 from 0.578 to 0.944. Because a monitored verdict is emitted only with a proof path, the verifier is sound by construction, and precision and specificity were 100% in the evaluated data. In a cross-model study on the system-controller module, precision remained 100% across three LLMs while recall tracked each model's device-semantic extraction. Precision therefore depends on the netlist-grounded verifier and correct device semantics rather than on any single LLM.

What Does the Effective Dimension of a Hybrid Quantum Neural Network Actually Measure?

Md Masum Mia, Amith Khandakar, Mohamed Arselene Ayari

原文摘要

Hybrid quantum neural networks (QNNs) pass features from a classical backbone into a variational quantum circuit, and many studies log a scalar called the effective dimension as a sign of capacity or model quality. The effective dimension is usually defined as the participation ratio (PR) of the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM), but studies in practice log a PR of cheap parameter sensitivities instead, and the meaning of that scalar is rarely tested. We show that the logged scalar equals the PR of Pauli-Z output sensitivities, that each sensitivity is at most n times its QFIM diagonal entry on n qubits, and that a PR of the QFIM diagonal overstates the full-matrix PR by an exact factor set by the off-diagonal mass. We then test the scalar on CIFAR-10 and EuroSAT with four frozen backbones, one of them a random projection, over 4 to 16 qubits, 1 to 4 layers, three entangling patterns, and three seeds. At a fixed circuit, CIFAR-10 accuracy spans 23.14% to 86.44% while the scalar stays between 6.63 and 9.13, and its correlation with accuracy changes sign across seeds in 7 of the 14 configurations. Depth raises the share of active parameters from 0.39 to 0.91, near a ceiling we derive, and initial gradient variance falls by a factor of 34.5 from 4 to 16 qubits. Removing entanglement raises accuracy by 5.3 to 8.2 points at the same parameter count. The effective dimension therefore describes circuit geometry rather than model quality, so capacity, trainability, and accuracy each need their own diagnostic.

AI-Generated Image Detectors Exploit Global Artifacts: Evidence from Inpainting Exchange

Elif Nebioglu, Emirhan Bilgiç, Adrian Popescu

原文摘要

Modern diffusion-based inpainting enables realistic, localized image manipulation, raising critical challenges for reliable detection. We show that state-of-the-art AI-generated image detectors largely fail to identify \emph{what} was synthesized and instead exploit a \emph{global} artifact introduced as a side effect of the generation pipeline: latent-diffusion inpainting passes the entire image through a VAE encoder--decoder, inducing a subtle but pervasive spectral shift even in unedited regions. We turn this observation into a simple, model-free diagnostic, \emph{Inpainting Exchange} (INP-X), that restores the original pixels outside the edited region while preserving all synthesized content. To study the effect at scale, we build a benchmark of $30$K matched real, standard-inpainted, and exchanged triplets ($90$K images) spanning four datasets and three inpainters. INP-X requires no model access and is a single compositing step, yet it collapses pretrained detectors, commercial APIs, and bias-aware methods toward chance (commercial APIs: $>$$90\%\!\to\!\sim$$55\%$; the bias-aware DDA: $97.6\%\!\to\!58.4\%$). We give formal propositions linking the effect to high-frequency attenuation from the VAE information bottleneck, and we causally isolate it with a factorial battery and a variance decomposition that attributes $97\%$ of the background spectral shift to the autoencoder round-trip alone. A perceptual study ($n{=}153$) shows the shift is also perceptible to humans, whose accuracy falls from $63.8\%$ to $56.2\%$ ($p{=}0.002$): significantly reduced, though not eliminated. Finally, we show that mechanism-driven mitigations (mixed-distribution and localization-supervised training) improve robustness, but detecting INP-X edits remains an open problem. LowRAM: Low-Rank Keys and Amortised Values for Composable KV Cache Compression at Test-Time

Teresa Delgado, Hugo Hazard, Martin Benfeghoul, Jun Wang, Zafeirios Fountas

原文摘要

Autoregressive decoding relies on the KV cache, whose memory footprint grows linearly with context length and caps batch size and throughput. Existing post-training methods exploit redundancy across tokens, layers, and feature dimensions, or lower numerical precision. We identify a complementary axis: within each attention head, values are largely predictable from their corresponding keys. We exploit this with value cache amortisation, which fits a lightweight per-head predictor at test time and stores residuals only for the tokens it reconstructs worst, giving $4\times$ near-lossless value compression. The predictor can be initialised by meta-learning for substantially reduced prefill overhead, or fitted from scratch in settings that allow a one-off cost, such as multi-query inference. We pair value amortisation with cross-layer low-rank key compression to produce LowRAM, an asymmetric compression pipeline that stays close to lossless across three model families. By reconstructing only a selected subset of KV pairs at each decoding step, LowRAM can keep decoding overhead minimal and achieve up to $5\times$ higher peak decode throughput at $4\times$ compression. LowRAM further composes with quantisation and eviction, reaching $26.9\times$ compression at $94.5\%$ of baseline performance on long contexts. These results show that treating keys and values as structurally distinct enables efficient, aggressive, and composable KV cache compression.

TraCE: Trajectory-Aware Concepts for Explainable Video Understanding

Wooil Lee, Junpyo Hong, Jongseo Lee, Tuomas Oikarinen, Tsui-Wei Weng, Jinwoo Choi

原文摘要

Video understanding models often rely on motion, yet their explanations can obscure which motion sources support a prediction. We identify motion-source under-specification as a limitation of existing video XAI: region-centric explanations can be source-ambiguous, while motion vocabularies restricted to single-person pose sequences are source-incomplete. We propose TraCE (Trajectory-Aware Concepts for Explainable Video Understanding), a concept-based framework that discovers source-flexible motion concepts by clustering optical-flow trajectories from training videos. These concepts represent dynamic evidence from people, objects, and interactions, while object and scene concepts account for static context. The resulting typed trajectory/object/scene interface supports class prediction for action recognition and question-conditioned concept matching for video question answering (VQA). We evaluate TraCE across five random seeds on six benchmarks: NTU RGB+D Mutual, Chiral SSv2, UCF-101, KTH, TOMATO, and STAR. Relative to non-interpretable baselines, TraCE maintains competitive task performance, with an average accuracy drop of 1.0 points for action recognition and a nominal gain of 0.4 points for VQA. Motion perturbation and concept-removal tests provide complementary evidence of directional semantic alignment and decision faithfulness, while sample-level interventions illustrate targeted model debugging. Vision-language-action models are typically built on a simple premise: perception is first compressed by visual encoders, and action reasoning begins only afterwards. Yet manipulation often hinges on precisely the visual signals most vulnerable to this abstraction, e.g., local geometry, boundaries, depth, and subtle state changes. This raises a fundamental question: should action policies inherit a fixed visual endpoint, or directly access evolving visual computation? We introduce NEO-VLA, a structurally encoder-free vision-language-action framework. Images are tokenized by lightweight patch convolutional layers and evolve jointly with language throughout the backbone, allowing a flow-matching action expert to draw from instruction-conditioned visual representations at different depths. This simple change reveals a consistent pattern. Native architectures outperform encoder-based counterparts under controlled comparisons; full fine-tuning reduces but does not erase the gap, and additional scale alone cannot recover it. More strikingly, layer-wise probing shows that the action-critical signals often peak well before the final visual representation. Across diverse manipulation settings and distribution shifts, NEO-VLA consequently achieves stronger and more robust control. Together, these results suggest that embodied control benefits from access to visual representations across the computational hierarchy, rather than a fixed encoder output.

Resolving Tusnády's Problem

Nicola Wengiel

原文摘要

We prove a lower bound of $Ω_d((\log N)^{d-1/2})$ for the worst-case combinatorial discrepancy of $N$-point sets with respect to anchored boxes in every fixed dimension $d\ge3$. Together with Nikolov's upper bound of the same order and Wei's planar lower bound, this settles Tusnády's problem: the discrepancy of axis-parallel boxes is $Θ_d((\log N)^{d-1/2})$ in every fixed dimension $d\ge2$. The proof combines smoothed product test functions, sampling discretization, and an entropy argument for conditioned Gaussian vectors.

Researchers use large language models as agents in social simulations, where agents are prompted with observations and background information intended to shape their actions. Yet LLM agents have been shown to substantially change their behavior under meaning-preserving prompt variations, creating a validation problem for social simulation. One plausible hypothesis is that this brittleness reflects a lack of grounding and can be reduced by enriching the context provided to the agents. Whether richer context improves robustness remains unclear, in part because context richness and robustness are rarely defined in ways that support controlled comparisons. We address the first need with controlled context enrichment, a set of prompt substitution rules that systematically enriches distinct types of context: neutral padding, generic social background, descriptive decision grounding, and normative decision grounding. We address the second by introducing selective robustness as a validation criterion: insensitivity to meaning-preserving prompt variation combined with a directional response to decision-relevant changes in the social world. We demonstrate the framework in a Prisoner's Dilemma-like game, showing how it can be used to identify which forms of context enrichment produce more desirable and robust agent behavior. We find that these forms of enrichment produce distinct behavioral patterns that vary between the two models tested.

We present cuRoboV2-Fast, a GPU-accelerated planner that reduces both planning latency and execution time for collision-free, payload-aware, torque-limited motions. B-spline trajectory optimization reduces the required iterations, while accelerated robot computations and differentiable inverse dynamics reduce refinement cost and accommodate changing payloads. TimeOpt optimizes traversal speed along the fixed path under sampled velocity, acceleration, jerk, and torque constraints, exploiting local spline support to solve banded Newton systems efficiently on the GPU. With a 3,kg payload, cuRoboV2-Fast achieves 4.4 ms mean planning time on RTX 5090, 14.7x faster than cuRoboV2. Our method on Jetson AGX Orin plans faster than cuRoboV1 + TOPPRA on RTX 5090.
