Interpretable Text Embeddings Based on Hierarchical Questions

Kohei Oda, Po-Min Chuang, Kiyoaki Shirai, Natthawut Kertkeidkachorn

原文摘要

QA-based text embeddings represent texts as vectors consisting of 1/0 answers to yes/no questions. Although these embeddings provide detailed information for interpretation and achieve high task performance, they often require humans to examine a large number of questions. Furthermore, the relationship between the number of questions and the appropriate level of question granularity has not been sufficiently studied. To address these challenges, we propose a method for constructing hierarchical questions for text embeddings. As the hierarchy deepens, questions become more specific and their number increases. During interpretation, we reduce the number of questions that humans need to examine by replacing questions at deeper levels with aligned questions at shallower levels. The question hierarchy is constructed through recursive clustering, contrastive prompting, and question alignment. Experimental results on general-purpose tasks show that our method improves interpretability while maintaining task performance. It is also found that, when only a limited number of questions are available, questions at shallower levels tend to achieve higher task performance than those at deeper levels, even with the same number of questions.

Decomposing one-class support vector machine into an ensemble of one-data support vector machines

Toshitaka Hayashi, Dalibor Cimr, Hamido Fujita, Richard Cimler

原文摘要

One-class Support Vector Machine(OCSVM) is a variant of support vector machine(SVM) for one-class classification (OCC). However, OCSVM has scalability issues with large datasets. This paper proposes an acceleration strategy for OCSVM. The idea is to decompose the dataset into samples and train OCSVM models for single data points. Subsequently, ensemble learning is applied to combine all models to compute the OCSVM model for the dataset. In addition, further acceleration is achieved through a support vector selection strategy with an OCSVM model trained on the average of the training samples. The experiment compared the proposal and traditional OCSVM using the Python package. The proposed strategy is faster than traditional OCSVM, while achieving similar classification results. Moreover, the proposed strategy can create a one-to-one correspondence between samples and models. Source code is uploaded at https://github.com/ToshiHayashi/ODSVM.

Where Should a KV-Cache Repair Budget Go? Distractor Structure and Contextual Compatibility in Non-Prefix Reuse

Yuxing Peng, Zhiqing Tang, Weijia Jia

原文摘要

Non-prefix KV-cache reuse encodes retrieved chunks independently and concatenates their caches. To find where a small repair budget should be spent, we vary the chunks around the answer-bearing one (the target) across three 7B-8B models and four datasets of dialogue memory, open-domain QA and API documentation. Reuse loses 19-100% of the context-dependent questions that full prefill answers, and it loses more when the other chunks are of the same kind as the target. Because the recoverable damage is spread over these other chunks, restoring a few of them recovers little, and the budget is better spent on the target. This works through contextual compatibility: recomputing the target against the reused cache beats inserting its full-prefill KV in all seven settings tested, although the recomputed KV stays far from the full-prefill KV. Question attention over reused caches, however, selects the target in at most 18.8% of development questions. A retriever finds it more often, and recomputing its top chunk after moving it next to the question significantly beats InfoFlow-style reordering at the same 5% budget in six of nine open-domain QA and API-documentation settings. On dialogue memory, though, recomputing chunks never significantly beats the token-level selector chosen for each setting.

GIST: Gibbs-Targeted Hierarchical Data Selection for Offline RLVR

Xuliang Huang, Tianxiang Zhao, Chengwei Qin, Yao Shu

原文摘要

Offline reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) trains on a fixed pool of sampled responses and typically supervises every token of every response, although responses and tokens are not equally informative. We study which ones to supervise through the Gibbs-optimal policy of KL-regularized RLVR, which offline training targets, and measure the mismatch between a policy and this target with a bidirectional KL divergence. At the reference policy, this mismatch factorizes exactly and separates the two outcomes: correct responses contribute mainly through the forward term, concentrated on their low-probability tokens, and incorrect responses through the reverse term, concentrated on the responses the policy generates often and on their high-probability tokens. Based on this analysis, we propose GIST (Gibbs-Targeted Hierarchical Data Selection), a two-level selection method that approximates these principles with signals available before training. GIST uses the sampling temperature to select correct responses on-policy and incorrect responses near the policy's mode, and it uses the initial policy's token probabilities to supervise only the tokens where the mismatch lies. Applied to two offline training objectives, GIST raises the average accuracy over GSM8K, MATH-500, and MBPP for all three models under both objectives. In a controlled comparison on Qwen3-0.6B/GSM8K, it outperforms seven selection baselines that choose from the same candidates while supervising 66.6% fewer tokens than training on all candidates of the same prompts.

Learning to Group and Order: Cross-Instance Self-Supervised RL for Vision-Centric MLLMs

Songming Yang, Hong-Tao Yu, Xiu-Shen Wei

原文摘要

Reinforcement learning (RL) post-training has become an important paradigm for improving multimodal large language models (MLLMs), especially with automatically verifiable rewards. Self-supervised visual pretext tasks provide such rewards without human annotations. However, existing methods mainly exploit within-instance structure, offering limited supervision for cross-instance discrimination and fine-grained comparison. We introduce Group-and-Order Self-Supervised Reinforcement Learning (GO-SSL), a cross-instance jigsaw framework for vision-centric MLLM post-training. Given two visual instances, GO-SSL mixes their local elements and trains the model to group them by instance of origin while recovering the order within each group, coupling instance-level comparison with spatial, temporal, or geometric structure recovery. This paired formulation turns the same unlabeled data into richer verifiable supervision through diverse pairings, shuffles, and a random-to-hard curriculum. We instantiate GO-SSL mainly on cross-image jigsaw tasks and further extend it to 3D depth and video temporal ordering. Across diverse benchmarks, GO-SSL consistently improves over the base MLLM and prior self-supervised post-training baselines, with clear gains in fine-grained perception and spatial understanding. Further evaluations across model scales and families support its generality. These results suggest that cross-instance comparison provides a useful self-supervised RL signal for improving transferable visual understanding in MLLMs. Code is available at https://github.com/SEU-VIPGroup/GO-SSL.

KolTa: A Physics-Informed Active Learning Framework for Formulation Discovery with Limited Data

Boyong Tang, Tao Wang, Lei Yang

原文摘要

Finding high-performing formulations is difficult when few have been measured and experimental budgets are limited. We propose KolTa, an active learning framework that selects batches to discover the top 5% of formulations at a target temperature under a fixed query budget. KolTa combines a three-stage predictor of component contributions, role-conditioned interactions, and anchored temperature response with task-specific soft physics constraints. Its Physics-Residual-Calibrated Upper Confidence Bound (PRC-UCB) acquisition rule combines predicted utility, ensemble disagreement, and a target-temperature physics residual, with nonnegative exploration weights fitted to out-of-fold signed errors. We evaluate the framework on three measured tasks and one simulated task covering binary-mixture viscosity, drug solubility, ionic-liquid viscosity, and electrolyte conductivity. KolTa ranks first or second in mean area under the learning curve (AULC) on every task and outperforms seven of the eight comparator strategies in paired tests, winning 75 of 78 paired comparisons across tasks and seeds against those seven strategies. Across the three measured tasks, its largest gap to the best mean AULC is 0.032, compared with at least 0.056 for every comparator. On Drug, reaching 80% average recovery of the remaining targets across drugs requires an estimated median of 348 additional formulation queries, about 18% fewer than the fastest comparator. Researchers can adapt the framework to diverse formulation problems through component roles and physical constraints.

Revisiting data-driven dynamic security assessment with a tabular foundation model

Olayiwola Arowolo, Maosheng Yang, Jochen Cremer

原文摘要

Data-driven pre-fault dynamic security assessment (DSA) rapidly evaluates the dynamic risk of credible contingencies on a power system using machine learning (ML). Existing approaches face two limitations. First, they require a large labelled database for training, with a separate model trained, tuned, and maintained for each contingency in a potentially long list of credible contingencies. Second, the trained models generalize poorly to unseen contingencies. This work addresses these limitations by using a tabular foundation model (TFM) that assesses stability through in-context learning, and requires no retraining or hyperparameter optimization. We use a single TFM to assess many contingencies at once, removing the need to train one classifier per contingency. We also characterize when using electrical distance coordinates (EDC) as continuous features enables the TFM to generalize to unseen contingencies and when it does not, showing how a few labelled samples can reliably improve generalization. Through comprehensive case studies on the IEEE 68-bus system, we show that a single TFM attains an average Macro F1 score of about 90\% with only 120 labelled samples per contingency, outperforming both classical ML and deep learning baselines, without any model retraining or hyperparameter tuning. For held-out contingencies, we show that using just 10 labelled samples of the new contingency with a modified EDC encoding matches the balanced accuracy of the best achievable transfer learning oracle model, which requires fully labelled data and is not deployable in practice. Overall, this initial study paves the way for developing and deploying foundation models for power system operations, with possible applications across multiple operational tasks.

In-Context Black-Box Optimization with Unreliable Feedback

Nicolas Samuel Blumer, Julien Martinelli, Samuel Kaski

原文摘要

Black-box optimization in science and engineering often comes with side information: experts, simulators, pretrained predictors, or heuristics can suggest promising candidates. Such feedback can accelerate search, but can also be biased, input-dependent, or misleading. Feedback-aware Bayesian optimization methods typically handle tasks independently, limiting adaptation across feedback sources. In-context optimizers enable cross-task adaptation, but usually rely only on optimization history at test time. We study feedback-informed in-context black-box optimization (FICBO), where a pretrained optimizer conditions on both the observed history and cheap auxiliary feedback for the current candidate set. We introduce structured priors over how auxiliary feedback relates to the objective, and use them to pretrain a feedback-aware transformer across regimes ranging from highly informative to misleading. At test time, the model estimates source reliability in context by comparing observed objective values with auxiliary signals, improving query selection. On synthetic and real-world tasks, FICBO effectively exploits informative feedback while remaining robust to weak or misleading sources. Empirical investigations further illustrate how the model perceives test-time sources, offering insights into its interpretability and decision-making process.

MA-Mesh: Resilient Multi-Agent Collaboration via Role-based Self-Healing

JunYong Lee, Woo Kyung Kim, Honguk Woo

原文摘要

Effective collaboration in multi-agent systems requires mechanisms for coordination and adaptability in dynamic and uncertain environments. However, existing multi-agent systems rarely model resilience explicitly, instead relying on ad-hoc output correction that limits systematic, runtime management of robustness. In this work, we propose Multi-Agent Mesh (MA-Mesh), a framework that constructs a role-based self-healing layer on top of a collaboration pattern. Specifically, MA-Mesh generates resilience-aware system specifications and synthesizes them into executable multi-agent policy code. To enhance resilience, we introduce two self-healing mechanisms: Cross-agent reflection, a mechanism that allows agents to evaluate not only their own outcomes but also the performance of their peers, enabling informed behavioral adjustments and collective policy refinement; Role-based failover, a strategy which dynamically reassigns roles and enables agents to substitute for one another when sub-tasks fail or agents underperform, ensuring continuity of task execution. Experimental results across diverse tasks (e.g., software development, tool use, scientific reasoning) demonstrate that MA-Mesh significantly outperforms existing multi-agent systems in both task performance and robustness under system uncertainty.

Presentation Sensitivity in Typed Decision Models for Subjective Text Evaluation

Jatin Agrawal, Radhika Mamidi

原文摘要

Typed decision models offer structured choices, scores, and probabilities for low-cost automated evaluation. We present a controlled audit of presentation sensitivity in Jev, Clef Flash, and Perplexity Decider across native choice and score interfaces. Across six datasets with 9,000 multiply annotated humor, helpfulness, and summarization items, we collect 702,000 judgments under interventions that vary positions, identifiers, authorship claims, endorsements, decision framing, and rating rubrics while preserving the evaluated texts. Jev's second-position probability advantage reaches 6.11 percentage points on summaries; reversing reader endorsements changes Perplexity's selected humor text on 40.40% of pairs; and rejection framing reduces Clef's summary agreement with human preferences by 23.36 points. Rating formats also shift score levels while often preserving rankings. Across these findings, repeatability, presentation robustness, and human alignment emerge as distinct properties of an evaluator. Reliable use therefore requires validating the decisions and score interpretations on which an evaluation pipeline depends.

From hydrological laws to catchment models: A process-based model matches deep-learning accuracy on three continents

Xilin Xia

原文摘要

Dooge asked whether hydrology has laws at the catchment scale. We ask whether a low-dimensional system built under physical laws can match the accuracy of neural networks that outperform process-based models on the same inputs. Three laws constrain a lumped catchment model. Conservation makes it a flux-connected storage network, dissipation fixes the sign of every flux and aggregation determines how the unresolved composition enters the fluxes, through effective laws over threshold distributions and a memory of the forcing. These laws admit four kinds of refinement. A parsimonious model under them, CaRT (11 parameters per catchment), is refined in a loop assisted by AI agents. Each refinement addresses an observed deficit through a hypothesis from the literature. The result, CaRT+, has fourteen states, 35 parameters per catchment and no daily neural network. Most refinements follow from aggregation over thresholds or from variables that carry no water but modulate fluxes. On 602 British and 593 US gauged catchments, single CaRT+ models reach median Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies of 0.863 and 0.765 in held-out years. A stateful LSTM reaches 0.869 and 0.751 and an entity-aware LSTM 0.862 and 0.754, while three-seed LSTM ensembles remain ahead of the CaRT+ ensemble by 0.003-0.012 in median paired NSE. On 505 drier Australian gauged catchments unused in development, single CaRT+ models reach 0.778 against 0.762 and 0.753 for the two LSTMs. The results suggest that catchment-scale laws exist as laws of form, with the constitutive families shared and only their parameters learned.

LegalEvolver: Agentic Legal Judgment Prediction via Rubric-Guided Self-Evolution

Xinyu Yang, Jiejun Tan, Chenlong Deng, Chenghao Zhang, Tongyu Wen, Zhicheng Dou

原文摘要

As LLM-based agents develop, they have been increasingly applied in the legal domain. Legal Judgment Prediction~(LJP) requires models to conduct multi-step reasoning and external legal evidence retrieval. Existing legal search agents' performance is often constrained by the quality of retrieval queries. They often formulate queries directly from the initial user request, overlooking latent legal issues and legally salient details. To address this issue, we propose \emph{LegalEvolver}, a query optimization framework specifically designed to generate legally informative queries for LJP-oriented retrieval. Sampling high-quality optimized queries and their corresponding search trajectories is challenging, as relying solely on unguided high-temperature rollouts is both inefficient and constrained by the model's initial capabilities. We therefore heuristically optimize queries as seeds, improving the efficiency of trajectory generation. Furthermore, we summarize rollout experience into rubrics and use them to guide multi-round iterative self-evolution. Iteratively performing rubric optimization and rubric-guided RL enables the model to surpass its initial performance ceiling. End-to-end performance on extensive benchmarks demonstrates the effectiveness of query optimization on LJP. Comparisons with direct SFT followed by RL demonstrate the effectiveness of rubric guidance. Evolving rubrics further outperform fixed rubrics, confirming the benefits of self-evolution.

Utilizing Earth Foundation Models to Enhance the Simulation Performance of Hydrological Models with AlphaEarth Embeddings

原文摘要

Accurate prediction in ungauged basins (PUB) requires effective transfer across hydrologically diverse regions. While deep learning has advanced large-sample hydrological modeling, its cross-regional generalization depends in part on the static basin descriptors used to guide model behavior. Earth Foundation Models (EFMs) provide a promising alternative by learning environmental representations from multi-modal satellite data. In this study, we evaluate the 64-dimensional AlphaEarth Foundations (AEF) embeddings as a new form of static basin representation and assess their value for streamflow prediction under both in-sample (IS) and out-of-sample (OOS) settings using the CAMELS dataset. Results show that AEF embeddings offer higher OOS robustness than CAMELS attributes, despite nearly identical IS performance. Mutual-information analysis reveals statistical associations between AEF embeddings and conventional catchment attributes related to terrain, vegetation, and rooting characteristics. We further investigate similarity-based donor-basin selection for PUB using CAMELS attributes and AEF embeddings. Across 100 target basins, AEF static inputs generally improved PUB performance. With AEF inputs, similarity-based donor selection outperformed random selection for smaller donor pools, but its advantage diminished as pool size increased. Adding more donor basins did not consistently improve performance. Leave-one-cluster-out experiments showed AEF input benefits depended on basin partitioning, suggesting that transferability remains sensitive to the catchment conditions represented during training. Overall, this study demonstrates that Earth Foundation Model embeddings provide a transferable representation for PUB prediction and underscores the importance of basin representation quality and donor pool design, motivating future research toward unified hydrological foundation models.

Connectivity Preservation and Graph Stretching in Range-Only Swarm Dispersion

Ariel Barel

原文摘要

We study connectivity-preserving finite-jump dispersion of anonymous, identical, and oblivious agents under an idealized range-only sensing model. Each agent measures only the distances to its visible neighbors, without bearings, identifiers, communication, memory, or a shared coordinate system. We derive the largest isotropic displacement certifiable as safe from these measurements alone. The resulting rule requires only the distance to the farthest visible neighbor: each agent selects a random direction and moves by half of its remaining visibility margin. The rule preserves every existing visibility edge under synchronous finite motion and therefore preserves connectivity. For two agents, we prove positive conditional drift in squared distance, almost-sure convergence to the visibility boundary, and finite expected time to reach any fixed neighborhood of that boundary. A one-million-run Monte Carlo experiment agrees with the exact first-round moments and estimates approximately 9.5 rounds to reach distance 0.97V from coincident initial positions; an independent Bellman-equation computation gives the same estimate. For general swarms, 1,000 runs across five initial-topology classes reproduce the deterministic safety guarantee at implementation level and reveal a consistent topology-dependent ordering of attainable diameter under the tested protocol. These results provide a theoretical foundation for connectivity-preserving multi-robot dispersion under minimal sensing, while isolating the guarantees achievable from anonymous range measurements alone.

Does Context Compression Preserve Refusal Alignment?

Anthony Nguyen, Wenjun Lin

原文摘要

Context compression reduces inference cost by encoding inputs into compact representations while preserving semantic content. An open question is whether semantic preservation alone is sufficient to maintain downstream behaviours such as refusal alignment. We investigate this question and find that encoder-based compression systematically weakens refusal behaviour in instruction-tuned language models, despite high reconstruction fidelity. This effect persists across model families and compression architectures. Mechanistic analysis shows that compression attenuates activation along the decoder's learned refusal direction. We further explore Memory Steering, a lightweight inference-time intervention that restores refusal rates to near-baseline levels without retraining and operates entirely in compressed representation space. These results demonstrate that semantic preservation does not guarantee behavioural preservation under compression, highlighting the need to explicitly preserve alignment-relevant features in compression-aware systems.

UniLoop: Unified Loop Closure Detection from Retrieval to Geometric Verification and Relative Pose Estimation

Jingwen Yu, Pengyu Wang, Jin Wu, Weinan Chen, Ping Tan, Hong Zhang

原文摘要

Loop closure detection conventionally cascades separate models for global retrieval, geometric verification, and relative pose estimation, leading to redundant computation and disconnected visual representations. We propose UniLoop, a unified framework that reuses the hierarchical representations of the pretrained geometric foundation model throughout this pipeline. A shared image encoder produces features for compact global descriptors; the same features are passed to the cross-view decoder for pairwise verification; and the original geometric predictions provide relative camera constraints for pose-graph optimization. Experiments on place recognition, loop verification, and relative pose estimation show that UniLoop improves loop-closure robustness and accuracy while reducing redundant backbone computation relative to modular pipelines. UniLoop achieves the best Recall@10 on MSLS (96.6) and Pitts30k (99.3) among the compared methods, while its verification branch reaches 95.63 AP and 96.29 ROC-AUC, surpassing the existing geometric verification baselines.

NanoKV: High-Ratio KV Cache Compression for Autoregressive Video Generation

Jiacheng Lu, Haoyi Zhu, Sipei Yi, Enze Xie, Cheng Zhuo, Yu Li

原文摘要

Autoregressive video models rely on historical key-value (KV) caches to preserve scene consistency over extended rollouts, making KV storage and repeated attention over history a growing memory and computational bottleneck. Aggressive compression can degrade generation quality, while reconstructing full-dimensional KV leaves attention computation largely unchanged. We introduce NanoKV, a frozen-backbone framework for generation-aware high-ratio KV compression. NanoKV exploits redundancy across tokens and attention heads by storing shared content in cluster centers and encoding joint head-channel residuals into low-bit coefficients. Crucially, NanoKV uses different fitting objectives for Keys and Values according to their distinct roles in attention: Key decoders are optimized to preserve downstream block outputs, whereas Value encoders and decoders are fitted for faithful reconstruction through the deployed quantization path. Building on the same compressed representation, the optional NanoKV-Fast variant reuses the stored coefficients for mixed-dimensional attention, reducing computation without modifying the video backbone. Across three autoregressive video backbones, NanoKV consistently improves the quality-storage trade-off. On HY-WorldPlay, NanoKV achieves $26.09\times$ effective KV compression, nearly twice that of KVTC, while improving PSNR by 1.0 dB. NanoKV-Fast retains $20.53\times$ effective compression and achieves an approximately $1.15\times$ end-to-end speedup over KVTC.

RADIUS: Ranking, Distribution, and Significance - A Comprehensive Alignment Suite for Survey Simulation

Weronika Łajewska, Paul Missault, George Davidson, Saab Mansour

原文摘要

Simulating survey responses with LLMs offers a scalable alternative to costly human data collection, yet evaluation methods remain ad hoc and inconsistent. Current metrics, typically borrowed from adjacent domains, focus on accuracy or distributional similarity while overlooking ranking alignment-whether simulations preserve the relative preference orderings observed in human populations. A simulator may achieve low distributional divergence yet fail to identify the option humans most prefer, a critical gap for decision-making applications. We propose RADIUS, a two-dimensional alignment suite that evaluates survey simulation along complementary axes: 1) RA alignment and 2) DIstribUtion alignment, accompanied by statistical Significance testing. Experiments across multiple social surveys and persona sources demonstrate that RADIUS exposes limitations of single-metric evaluation and offers stronger discriminative power. On an independently reproduced simulator, we further show that distributional improvement often coincides with misidentifying the option humans most prefer - a decision-relevant error RADIUS surfaces but distributional metrics miss. We open-source RADIUS to support reproducible and comparable assessment of survey simulators.

Robust Successor Features

原文摘要

Generalization in Reinforcement Learning (RL) refers to the ability to execute close-to-optimal policies in unseen tasks after the agent has been trained on a different set of tasks. Building on the seminal work of the successor representation and further adaptations with function approximation, Transfer in RL has traditionally focused on generalizing to tasks that only differ in the reward function. A decade after the introduction of the successor representation, Robust RL emerged simultaneously from several articles in the field of operations research. In Robust RL, the transition kernel is unknown, and the goal is to maximize the expected reward under this uncertainty. Our work unifies these two paradigms through robust successor features, which generalize across both the reward function and the transition kernel, under the assumption that tasks are linear Markov Decision Processes. We derive a bound on Generalized Policy Improvement (GPI) that explicitly quantifies how performance degrades with the mismatch between transition kernels, recovering existing successor-feature guarantees when dynamics are shared. Finally, the generalization capabilities of robust successor features are validated on several grid-based benchmarks and compared to previous alternatives that focus solely on either the reward or the transition kernel.

Corralling AI Risks with Grassroots Contracts

Ehud Shapiro

原文摘要

AI's inflection point is a fountain of alarming risks. Digital platforms in particular are vulnerable to three major AI risks, as those in control of global platforms cede control to AI, of the algorithms, of membership and of content: (1) AI control of global platforms, social and economic, used by the majority of humanity, resulting in the majority of humanity becoming vulnerable to AI control. (2) Unaccountable AI agents operating anonymously on social and economic digital platforms, side-by-side with humans, possibly masquerading as humans, serving unknown masters with unknown goals, operating under unknown restraints without accountability or culpability. (3) Unattributed deepfakes generated by anonymous AI, with people unable to distinguish them from genuine content and with their producers evading accountability and culpability. Here, we propose to corral these AI risks with grassroots contracts, a digital incarnation of a two-centuries old notion of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. We present grassroots contracts for a social graph with accountable AI agents and for a social network with digital provenance, and working smartphone apps that implement the two and show how they corral these major AI risks: (1) AI control of global platforms. (2) Unaccountable AI agents. (3) Unattributed deepfakes.

From Adults to Children: Benchmarking Foundation Models for Chest X-Ray Classification under Domain Shift

Sara Inácio, Hugo Proença, João C. Neves

原文摘要

Foundation models have shown significant potential across diverse fields and have been applied to medical imaging, but their robustness across patient populations remains unclear. In this work, we investigate foundation models' ability to generalize from adult to pediatric chest X-ray classification. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first benchmark to compare multiple foundation models under a common adult-to-pediatric evaluation setting while also analyzing the effect of adaptation depth. We harmonize VinDr-CXR and PediCXR into a five-label classification task and evaluate six foundation models and two CNN baselines. All models are adapted using adult data only and tested in both the in-domain and pediatric domains using linear probing, partial fine-tuning, and full fine-tuning. The benchmark reveals a clear and consistent trend: all models suffer a substantial performance degradation when transferred from adult to pediatric data, with drops exceeding 10 percentage points. While Macro-AUROC values reach approximately 92% on the adult test set, performance decreases to around 78% on the pediatric domain. Another important finding is that increasing the depth of adaptation improves pediatric performance on average, although the effect varies across models. Moreover, strong in-domain performance does not necessarily indicate greater robustness to domain shift.

Give Up to Get More: Priors, Not Policies, Govern Test-Time Compute Allocation

Jinhyung Bae

原文摘要

When many inputs share a budget of repeated attempts by a large language model (LLM), a common rule gives harder inputs more. On public math, code and formal-proof samples, the best published difficulty-proportional rule captures half or more of the oracle gain on benchmarks the model mostly solves, but at most 13% on hard workloads, even given true pass rates. Because the value of one more attempt peaks at intermediate difficulty, the optimal static allocation is inverted-U and gives little to inputs that are hopeless at the current budget. In a strict survey of 221 LLM allocation papers, at least 13 give the hardest inputs the most attempts; their easier settings sit at budgets where this is near-optimal, so the cost appears on harder workloads. Acting on it requires knowing which inputs are solvable, so information, not the policy, drives the gain. With a verifier and a prior from a related model's past runs on the same inputs, Thompson Sampling raises the solved share on the hardest workload from 14% to 27%; without such a prior, no policy we tested beats round-robin. For the policies we tested, the gain vanishes between prior rank correlations of about 0.3 and 0.55, which cheap text-based priors barely reach on the weakest models, and it requires a verifier whose false acceptances are rare relative to the pass rate. On new Qwen2.5 samples the pattern holds, and tempering the prior avoids losses on easy workloads. We turn these results into a decision guide.

Training-Free Character-Length Control in Summarization with Diffusion Language Models

Steffen Castle, Nils Feldhus, Christopher Ebert, Leonhard Hennig, Sebastian Möller

原文摘要

Summarization with a fixed character length is important for tasks such as headline and article preview generation, where text must fit an exact space. Autoregressive language models (LMs) struggle with precise character-length control: training-based methods require task-specific fine-tuning, while zero-shot prompting strategies achieve only approximate compliance. We propose DELTA (Diffusion Expected Length Targeting Algorithm), a training-free inference-time method for masked diffusion LMs that estimates expected character length at each denoising step and dynamically inserts or removes masked positions to steer toward a target length. DELTA requires no fine-tuning and is designed for off-the-shelf masked diffusion LMs. Across three summarization benchmarks, it reduces character-length errors by an order of magnitude compared to baselines while maintaining competitive summary quality in both automatic and human evaluation.

原文摘要

Large language models have made rapid progress in generating machine-checked proofs for well-defined mathematical problems. Extending this progress to research mathematics requires more than solving isolated theorems. Research involves choosing questions, developing definitions and conjectures, connecting results, and combining formal proofs with expert judgment. This survey examines how LLM-driven systems can support these broader activities. We review formal-mathematics tasks, datasets, and autoformalization, and organize proof-generation methods into three overlapping areas: training strategies, inference-time search and adaptation, and agentic workflows. We then examine benchmark results, selected research projects, and platforms for collaborative mathematical work. A central distinction runs throughout the survey: checking a formal proof does not by itself establish that it captures the intended problem or makes a new mathematical contribution. We therefore distinguish theorem benchmarks, repository tasks, formalization projects, and research claims, and discuss the evidence needed to assess each. Finally, we identify five priorities for progress: better data and evaluation, representations of mathematical relationships, conjecture and concept generation, reliable tool integration, and human--AI collaboration. Together, these perspectives connect advances in proof generation to the practical demands of mathematical research.

DTA-GT: Direction- and Topology-Aware Graph Transformer for Neural Network Representation Learning

原文摘要

Architecture attribute predictors reduce the cost of neural architecture search by estimating accuracy or latency from a small set of evaluated candidates. Neural architectures are operation-labeled directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), where edge directions determine computational roles and execution dependencies. Existing graph Transformer predictors incorporate topological and directional information in different ways, but primarily focus on specific mechanisms rather than coordinated encoder-wide modeling of these semantics. We introduce encoder-wide directional consistency, a design principle that coordinates the modeling of directed computational semantics across node initialization, global spectral encoding, pairwise interaction, and feature updates. To implement this principle, we propose DTA-GT, a Direction- and Topology-Aware Graph Transformer that integrates direction- and topology-aware node initialization, Magnetic Laplacian spectral encoding, direction-dual structural attention, and a Direction-Sensitive MoE-FFN. Across accuracy and latency prediction on NAS-Bench-101 and NAS-Bench-201, DTA-GT consistently outperforms representative sequence-, GNN-, Transformer-, and hybrid predictors under limited-budget settings. Ablations and Magnetic spectral controls support the contribution of the direction-aware stages and orientation-sensitive spectral information, while mechanistic diagnostics characterize module behavior. These results support encoder-wide directional consistency as an effective design principle for architecture DAG representation.

原文摘要

Event-based cameras are bio-inspired sensors with pixels that independently and asynchronously respond to brightness changes at microsecond resolution, offering the potential to handle visual tasks in high-speed maneuvering scenarios. Existing event-based approaches, although successful in mitigating motion blur caused by high-speed maneuvers, suffer from many limitations. Some of them highlight a success of pose tracking for a fronto-parallel fast shaking camera closed to the structure, while others assume pure (optionally aggressive) three-degree-of-freedom rotations. The former requires persistent local map visibility within the field of view (FOV), whereas the latter fails to generalize to six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) motions where both linear and angular velocities may be large. Consequently, current successes do not fully demonstrate that event-based state estimation under arbitrary aggressive maneuvers is a fully solved problem. To quantitatively assess the extent to which the potential of event cameras has been unlocked, we conduct a thorough analysis of state-of-the-art (SOTA) event-based visual odometry (VO)/visual-inertial odometry (VIO) methods and report shortcomings in current public datasets. Furthermore, we introduce a benchmarking framework for event-based state estimation, called EvSLAM, characterized by sufficient variation in data collection platforms, diverse extreme lighting scenarios, and a wide scope of challenging motion patterns under a clear and rigorous definition of high-speed maneuvers for mobile robots, along with a novel evaluation metric designed to fairly assess the operational limits of event-based solutions. This framework benchmarks state-of-the-art methods, yielding insights into optimal architectures and persistent challenges.

KL for a KL: On-Policy Distillation with Control Variate Baseline

Minjae Oh, Sangjun Song, Gyubin Choi, Yunho Choi, Yohan Jo

原文摘要

On-Policy Distillation (OPD) has emerged as a dominant post-training paradigm for Large Language Models, especially in reasoning domains. However, OPD remains unstable in practice due to the high gradient variance of its single-sample Monte Carlo estimator, and recipes for stable training are still immature. We propose vOPD (On-Policy Distillation with a control variate baseline), which casts OPD as policy-gradient RL and stabilizes it by introducing a control variate baseline---canonically a value function---from the RL literature. We show that the OPD value function admits a closed form: the per-token negative reverse KL divergence between student and teacher, available directly from the existing forward pass with no additional critic or inference. Existing stabilization methods either compute the full token-level reverse KL over the entire vocabulary, adding significant overhead, or restrict it to a top-k support, biasing the objective. vOPD instead preserves the lightweight single-sample estimator and subtracts the value function as a detached baseline to keep the gradient unbiased while reducing variance. Moreover, we show that a top-k approximation of the baseline further lowers cost without compromising performance. Across mathematics, science, and instruction-following benchmarks, vOPD consistently outperforms base OPD and matches the most expensive full-vocabulary method, offering an efficient stabilization of OPD through principled RL variance reduction.

Vortex-Induced Torque in Grasping Soft Objects: Influence of Geometry and Pneumatic Parameters

原文摘要

Vortex grippers are commonly integrated into automated systems for handling objects with complex geometries in packaging, sorting, and assembling. However, their interaction with compliant objects remains difficult to predict, particularly with respect to the vortex-induced torque transmitted during grasping. This study investigates vortex-induced torque during the grasping of compliant objects and quantifies the coupled effects of supply pressure, tangential nozzle diameter, surface geometry, and curvature. The results show that increasing the tangential nozzle diameter primarily enhances the sensitivity of the generated torque to supply pressure rather than producing a uniformly higher torque. Surface geometry also strongly influences the rotational interaction, with dome-concave surfaces generally producing substantially greater torque than corresponding dome-convex surfaces, whereas the difference between cylindrical concave and convex surfaces is comparatively small. The strongest and most repeatable response was observed for a dome-concave surface exhibiting favorable object-gripper geometric matching. Among the evaluated machine-learning regression methods, Gaussian Process Regression provided the best overall predictive performance under repeated cross-validation, demonstrating that vortex-induced torque can be estimated from combined pneumatic and geometric parameters. These findings provide a basis for predicting and utilizing vortex-induced torque in the dexterous manipulation of soft objects.

From Outcome to Representation: Tracing Reasoning Mechanisms through Integrated Policy Gradient

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate remarkable reasoning capabilities, yet the internal mechanisms driving these multi-step processes remain opaque. Existing mechanistic interpretability approaches often rely on superficial text-pattern co-occurrences or capture only short-term effects, struggling to trace the long-horizon, outcome-driven influence of internal components such as neurons or sparse features in multi-step reasoning. In this paper, we introduce Integrated Policy Gradient (IPG), a novel, training-free framework that brings policy-based attribution into mechanistic interpretability for LLM reasoning. Grounded in \textit{outcome-oriented} and \textit{sequential-influence-aware} principles, it backpropagates outcome-level, non-differentiable behavioral signals (e.g., reasoning outcome correctness) through entire inference trajectories, utilizing path integration to isolate outcome-relevant mediators at component level for reliable attribution. This provides a linear approximation of Causal Mediation Analysis (CMA) in reasoning. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that \method achieves precise localization and reveals mechanistic insights by identifying sparse, concentrated subsets of internal components associated with specific reasoning behaviors. Our method also enables modulation of reasoning capabilities, offering a powerful and reliable framework for understanding LLM reasoning. EEGDash Corpus: A Training-Ready Public Corpus for EEG Foundation Models

Kuber Shahi, Bruno Aristimunha, Arnaud Delorme

原文摘要

Foundation models for electroencephalography (EEG) are pretrained on tens of thousands of hours of recordings, and their accuracy grows with that amount. Such data is hard to assemble. The largest sources are clinical archives that cannot be redistributed, and the public sources are spread over several archives, file formats, and licences. We release eegdash-corpus-v0, a training-ready corpus of 77 public EEG datasets, as the gated Hugging Face dataset EEGDash/eegdash-corpus-v0 with the SHA-256 of every file. REVE, the largest published EEG foundation model, names 89 datasets as its pretraining corpus. Twelve cannot be redistributed: four clinical archives that hold 82% of its hours, and eight under no-derivatives licences. The corpus holds the 76 others that REVE's sampling rate allows and one more from REVE's release card: 77 datasets, 14,075 hours from 7,272 subjects, 5.0 million 10-second samples and 6.21 billion tokens per epoch. Every dataset is fetched through EEGDash, converted once with REVE's recipe, and stored in its own buckets of a chunked Zarr store with its licence recorded beside it, so a model can train on the whole store or on any subset of datasets. To test that the store pretrains a model, we retrain REVE-Base from scratch twice with the authors' code, changed only in how it reads data, and score it on seven public OpenEEGBench tasks. It reaches 0.331 under linear probing and 0.273 after fine-tuning, against 0.333 and 0.325 for the released model and 0.200 and 0.205 for an untrained encoder. The converter, the conversion reports, and the loader changes are released with the corpus.
