Controlling the motion of multiple objects in image-to-video (I2V) generation requires preserving object identities while enforcing adherence to distinct target trajectories. This becomes particularly challenging as the number of objects increases and their paths intersect or occlude one another. Existing approaches entangle multiple trajectories within a shared, dense conditioning signal, making object-level correspondence difficult to preserve in crowded scenes. We depart from this paradigm and enforce a strict, per object spatial constraint that isolates instances independently. Our method, TrajLoc, achieves this directly within the attention layers by substituting the cross-attention weights of each object token with a Gaussian heatmap centered on its target location at every frame. The same per object token interface carries trajectory and depth through a learned embedding and preserves identity by encoding first frame appearance in place of an object token. Evaluations across six datasets, featuring up to 20 simultaneously controlled objects and out of distribution real world scenes, demonstrate that our method consistently improves both visual fidelity and trajectory adherence. Applied to two architecturally distinct backbones (CogVideoX 5B and WaN 2.1 14B), our approach achieves average gains of +4.3 dB PSNR and a 51% reduction in trajectory end point error compared to the strongest baselines. Byte level language models avoid tokenizer dependence and provide universal coverage, but processing every byte at full resolution is expensive. We introduce DeepMem, a causal multiscale architecture that separates semantic compression from exact byte preservation. A learned invertible subband transform constructs a hierarchy of shorter sequences, while a lossless carrier and explicit detail sidebands preserve byte identity. Fast weight memory blocks operate along the encoder, with iterative shared state computation at the compressed bottleneck, while an attention based super resolution decoder restores byte resolution representations. DeepMem achieves stronger language modeling performance than a matched byte level Transformer on FineWeb-Edu and PG19, and obtains the best macro average performance across the evaluated FLORES languages. It also improves PIQA accuracy while remaining competitive on code modeling, multiple choice reasoning, and byte level corruption robustness. Bottleneck refinement requires approximately $7{,}600\times$ fewer counted FLOPs than equivalent full resolution reasoning, while maintaining competitive evaluation throughput.

Task instructions from users for agents are inherently underspecified, especially regarding safety boundaries--creating behavioral risks. To study these risks, we introduce BARC-Bench, a collection of 110 tasks across nine simulated workspace environments where benign requests leave openings for unsafe actions. In this benchmark, we evaluate agent behavior against safety boundaries established by workspace records, implicit environmental context, and unstated social norms. For example, an agent asked to schedule off-boarding discussions must arrange the meeting without prematurely revealing an employee's resignation through a shared calendar invitation. Evaluating four frontier model configurations across five attempts per task reveals that models are not consistently safe: the share of tasks completed safely on all five attempts ranges from 9.1% to 72.7%, with even the strongest configuration producing a safety violation on 27.3% of tasks. These results highlight an asymmetric operational risk: while models frequently complete complex workflows, their inability to consistently respect unstated boundaries presents a substantial barrier to safe autonomous delegation.

Jev with Foresight: Safe Language-Guided Autonomous Driving via a Language World Model

Yansong Qu, Jiancong Chen, Samuel Labi

原文摘要

Large language models understand passengers' driving commands, but as driving agents they reason in generated text for seconds and must infer each action's consequences implicitly from the scene. We present Jev-AD, which pairs Jev, a typed decision model that answers predefined questions with probabilities, not generated text, with a language world model that predicts for every candidate action how nearby vehicles move over the next two seconds. Code turns these predictions into foreseen consequences, which Jev compares instead of inferring them from coordinates. In simulated highway merging (500 car-episodes), this foresight lowers the same decision model's collision rate from 26.0% to 2.4% at 0.25 seconds per decision, and Jev-AD achieves the passenger's intent in 93% of free-form command trials. In 500 replayed real-world NGSIM episodes, foresight lowers the collision rate from 48.2% to 2.8%, and the world model, learned from this traffic, foresees 93% of dangerous actions. Vision-language-action (VLA) models increasingly pair a pre-trained vision-language model (VLM) with a flow-matching expert that conditions its action predictions on the VLM's key-value representations. Those representations must carry information useful for control, yet the VLM was never trained for the action expert's flow-matching objective. Two signals can address this: gradients backpropagated from the expert's loss (coupling), or VLM supervision to predict discrete tokens encoding the same target actions. Prominent training recipes forgo the first, blocking expert-to-VLM gradients (insulation) to protect the VLM's existing capabilities, while also supervising it on vision-language data and action tokens. Because vision-language co-training also aims to preserve those capabilities, the additional protection provided by insulation is unclear. At the same time, insulation removes a direct signal about which features continuous action prediction requires. On the other hand, action-token supervision offers an alternative way to learn action-relevant representations, which may explain why insulation succeeds in practice. We disentangle these factors in autonomous driving and manipulation by independently varying action-token supervision and whether the expert's loss updates the VLM. In open-loop driving, insulation is competitive with coupling when action tokens are supervised; without them, coupling reduces trajectory-prediction error by roughly 25%. When both components are trained jointly from the outset, coupling increases closed-loop driving route progress by approximately 17% with action-token supervision and 40% without it, and similarly improves robot manipulation performance under both settings. These findings show that the value of gradient insulation depends on the VLM's action supervision and the evaluation setting, challenging insulation as a default VLA training recipe.

Diagonal state space models process long sequences at linear cost, yet the same transition is applied at every step of a rollout, so an unconstrained recurrence holds no quantity fixed and the state decays or grows without bound. Current designs constrain one quantity, and preserving one does not guarantee preservation of the others, so a model can hold its norm to machine precision while momentum drifts by hundreds of percent. We claim that the conserved quantities of a diagonal recurrence are layered, that each layer requires a strictly stronger condition on the operator, and that a unit-modulus spectrum reaches only the outermost. Acting on the claim, we enforce the conditions required for every layer by construction. The generator of the Kronecker-Cayley transition (KC) is a graph Laplacian over object subspaces, $\mathbf{H}=\mathbf{L}\otimes I_m$, advanced by a Cayley transform, and the step stays diagonal at $O(N^3+N^2m)$ cost. The conserved set is exactly a $2m^2$-dimensional family of quadratic forms, held at every parameter value, so the quantities and the dynamics the construction reaches are fixed before training. On four conservation benchmarks, KC holds total mass at or near the reference floor while every diagonal baseline loses it by orders of magnitude. We further compare against mass correction and find that two correctors fail once the underlying prediction diverges, which shows that assembly rather than correction is necessary for a guarantee that holds across the rollout. A free modal basis trained under a conservation penalty conserves only by freezing its spectrum, whereas the assembled operator conserves with every mode but one free to rotate. Beyond these benchmarks, KC holds the linear momentum of three $N$-body systems and, at the operator level, the conserved quantity in molecular dynamics, chemical kinetics, pharmacokinetics and power-grid swing dynamics.

Single-cell RNA foundation models (scFMs) are increasingly used for in-silico biological discovery, yet predictive performance alone does not reveal whether their decisions rely on biologically meaningful signals or model-specific shortcuts. We systematically investigate post-hoc attribution of downstream predictions across two tasks: cell-type annotation using pretrained Cell2Sentence and scGPT models, and perturbation prediction using scGPT+STATE in a controlled setting. For cell annotation, we use attribution to assess whether predictions rely on established marker genes and how their relevance varies with model architecture, expression rank, and the surrounding cellular context. For perturbation prediction, we compare attribution patterns with known regulatory ground-truth in a synthetic setting to assess what they reveal about the model's learned computations. Across these tasks, attribution reveals biological feature use, contextual interactions, contributions from different input pathways, learning progression, associations with prediction quality, and potential pitfalls that are not fully captured by standard performance metrics. Experiments with complete and limited regulatory knowledge further demonstrate that conclusions drawn from attribution depend strongly on the choice of biological reference, baseline, and null model. Together, these findings highlight the value of attribution as a flexible post-hoc diagnostic for understanding model behavior, identifying potential issues, and informing the development of scFMs.

Alternating online mirror descent (AltOMD) is a simple learning rule for zero-sum games, which improves upon simultaneous OMD numerically and theoretically. Previous work obtained $O(T^{1/3})$ and $O(T^{1/5})$ regret bounds for AltOMD, by leveraging modified-energy-function-based analyses. However, settling whether AltOMD achieves near-constant regret has remained an open question. In this paper we resolve the question of whether AltOMD achieves near-constant regret in the affirmative. In particular, we show an $O(log(T))$ regret bound on the sum of the players' external regrets for any two-player zero-sum bilinear game with compact convex strategy sets, under mild regularity assumptions on the regularizers. We verify that our assumptions hold for the negative entropy regularizer, thereby obtaining logarithmic regret for the alternating multiplicative weights updates algorithm. The regret bound also yields an $O(log(T)/T)$ duality gap bound for the averaged strategies.

Implicit generative models based on deep neural networks have revolutionized many scientific fields, from weather research to language generation. They successfully model complex random objects arising in real-world problems. In this work, we propose a sample-efficient training mechanism for these models. Our approach leverages regularized inference with shrinkage priors and generalized Bayes. In the large $p$ (parameter dimension) and small $n$ (sample size) setting, sparsity-inducing priors have been successfully used for linear regression when $p \gg n$. However, their application to implicit generative models remains challenging due to the intractability of the likelihood function. To address this, we adapt a scoring rule posterior based on a strictly proper scoring rule, following the generalized Bayes framework. We then propose a block SGMCMC within Gibbs sampling mechanism. This enables efficient exploration of high-dimensional parameter spaces by identifying a sparse representation of neural implicit generative models. We demonstrate the performance of our proposed method through experiments on $p \gg n$ linear regression and an application of neural generative models.

Importance sampling is a building block of modern statistical computing, but the weighted estimate is prone to high or infinite variance. Moreover, its empirical standard error is often unreliable, leaving importance sampling without practical uncertainty quantification. Motivated by multilevel regression and poststratification (MRP) in survey sampling, we propose post-stratified importance sampling (PIS) for estimating target expectations from proposal draws. PIS reformulates arbitrarily high-dimensional weighting into two one-dimensional probabilistic modeling problems: regression for the conditional mean given the importance ratio and marginal density estimation for the importance ratio. Different modeling choices yield a family of PIS estimators, encompassing ordinary importance sampling as a special case. We develop a model-based implementation that combines one-dimensional Gaussian process regression for the conditional mean and score-informed heavy-tailed density estimation for the marginal law, using both the observed weights and the available density evaluations. We study the oracle gains of PIS and establish consistency under general and model-specific conditions. Simulations and applications to cross-validation demonstrate improvements in estimation accuracy and uncertainty quantification.

Looped transformers increase effective depth by repeatedly applying a shared set of transformer layers, offering a parameter-efficient way to scale computation. However, standard residual connections aggregate information across recurrent depth into a single stream, providing limited control over which intermediate representations from preceding layers should be reused. In this paper, we introduce ARLoop, a looped transformer architecture based on attention residuals, where the input of each layer is selectively aggregated through attention over model depth. Distinct from standard transformers, we find that looped transformers do not require access to the full residual history: sliding-window depth attention matches or outperforms full-history attention at larger recurrent depths. Across controlled experiments with multiple parameter scales (140M and 370M) and recurrent depths (R = 1 to 5), ARLoop consistently outperforms prior residual designs for looped transformers. More importantly, we further scale ARLoop to 0.6B and 1.2B parameters under a realistic LLM pretraining recipe, demonstrating that the gains transfer to realistic pretraining, with particularly strong improvements on math and coding tasks. Our 1.2B model, pretrained on only 0.5T tokens with three recurrences, outperforms Huginn-3.5B (the only fully-open looped LLM as of our release date) across all evaluated tasks and is competitive with similar-sized non-looped models such as Qwen3.5-2B despite being trained on substantially less data.

The goal of Sign Language Production (SLP) is to translate natural language text into corresponding sign language movements performed by a virtual avatar. The quality of the generated motion is typically evaluated by a motion-space Frechet distance (FID) and back-translation BLEU score on benchmarks such as How2Sign. The existing approaches can improve both metrics substantially while the underlying generator fails to represent the input sentence, a failure we call conditional collapse. In this work we propose to evaluate the generated motion at three independent levels: (tau1) initial-pose conditioning, (tau2) output diversity, and (tau3) target faithfulness. We compute these as pairwise-distance ratios using latent representations of a frozen motion autoencoder (MoAE), judged against each dataset's own GT-vs-GT reference. We evaluate diffusion and regression SLP models on How2Sign, including a re-implemented Neural Sign Actors, and show that tau3 faithfulness is never attained, while FID varies by nearly two orders of magnitude and is uncorrelated with faithfulness. We then apply the same models and diagnostic to Phoenix-2014T, CSL-Daily, and gloss-level ASL3DWord and show that faithfulness varies proportionally to how densely the training sentences cover the test conditions (conditioning coverage) and not corpus size. The smaller but densely covered Phoenix-2014T and ASL3DWord datasets generate faithful sign motion, while CSL-Daily follows the input text yet falls short of sign language faithfulness. Using the largest, open-domain How2Sign dataset, the models collapse at every scale. We introduce two measurements of the text data that rank the corpora in the order of how densely the training sentences fill the embedding space, and how close each test sentence lies to its nearest training sentence.

Deep models for radiological diagnosis are typically trained to predict disease labels directly from images, which limits them to diseases seen during training and makes their decisions hard to interpret in radiologists' terms. Radiology, however, proceeds from visual findings to disease through published guidelines that make this decision rule explicit, interpretable, and reproducible. We introduce diagnosis by composition (DbC), a representation learning framework that encodes this findings-first logic. DbC learns a vocabulary of radiological findings by aligning image features with the text embeddings of the findings, each finding represented as a dense map over the scan. A disease is defined by a set of required findings derived from its guidelines, and its diagnosis map is a fixed, parameter-free composition of the corresponding finding maps. Because the finding-to-disease mapping is derived from guidelines rather than learned, DbC is interpretable and auditable by design, can extend to new diseases by specifying their findings without retraining, and can diagnose unseen diseases by composing their findings. On multi-phase liver CT, DbC detects and localizes unseen diseases, rare diseases from a different institution, and an external cohort significantly better than all comparators, including models that align images with disease names. DbC also improves detection and localization in the fully supervised setting and remains superior across training-set sizes. Although demonstrated on liver CT, DbC applies wherever radiological guidelines define diseases through findings.

A policy can earn its performance by where it locates on average or by reacting to information. For any Markov policy $π$ in a finite-horizon MDP, let $ν$ be its open-loop marginal, which plays $π$'s average action distribution at each step. We show that $J(π)-J(ν)$ equals $\sum_t tr Cov(Q^ν_t,π_t)$ under endogenous dynamics. Audits based on immediate costs alone can have the wrong sign. Writing the covariance as a joint-versus-product gap gives the bound $|J(π)-J(ν)|\le\sum_t span_t\sqrt{I(s_t;a_t)/2}$, with a sharp constant. Hence, an MDP's adaptivity gap is bounded by the information that its optimal policy uses. Estimating $J(π)-J(ν)$ from $π$'s own bandit-feedback logs takes $Θ(\barχ^2 \log(1/η)/δ^2)$ rounds, where $\barχ^2$ is an average $χ^2$-divergence. At the same time, deterministic non-constant policies cannot be audited at all. We also provide an importance-sampling auditor for episodic MDPs.

End-to-end digital twins can be constructed by fitting separate stage models and connecting them after inference. We investigate the Frequentist prediction properties of a commonly used Monte Carlo simulation scheme that forwards complete predictive draws through such a chain when measured stage outputs contain independent normal errors, but the latent stage means are deterministic. Analytical two-stage examples show persistent asymptotic interval and coverage inflation and, with quadratic propagation, mean bias dependent on the parameters to be estimated. Simulations of four- and eight-stage linear-quadratic univariate chains with 7, 15 or 30 training runs demonstrate pronounced input-dependent distortions. A diagnostic using error-free latent training predictors shows that the effect is mainly not attributable to errors in variables, but to the MCSim approach even showing underestimation of coverage. We propose a model-based bootstrap: an initial chain forwards fitted means, bootstrap chains are refitted on fixed-center bootstrap data while forwarding their mean prediction, and a target-stage future error enters a studentized prediction root. Across the investigated scenarios, relative mean bias is substantially reduced, and coverage is closer to the nominal 90%. At sample size 30, the eight-stage bootstrap has mean width ratios of 1.16-1.42 relative to the known-parameter normal reference, compared with 4.11-4.97 for observed-to-observed MCSim. These results support improved endpoint prediction in the tested setting. Further investigations of the bootstrap scheme in the supplement for a bivariate 6-stage process show similar satisfactory results.

A general mathematical model of experience formation is considered, in which the learning level is defined as the probability that the next value of the uncertainty factor has already been mastered and not forgotten. Within this model the shape of the learning curve is derived, and it turns out to be determined primarily by the distribution of situation occurrence: a uniform distribution yields an exponential curve, whereas a power-law distribution yields a power-law curve whose exponent equals the ratio of the distribution exponent to that same exponent increased by one. Both mechanisms generating power-law curves, established earlier in the analysis of debugging, assembly and repair activities, are shown to have been independently rediscovered in deep learning theory as the "frequency" and "spectral" mechanisms of scaling laws for artificial neural networks, while the exponential curves of machine learning (contraction operators, strongly convex optimization, stationary reinforcement) are generated by the same constancy of the contraction coefficient that was revealed half a century earlier in models of radioactive decay, the first-order lag element, and others. A solution is given for the problem of choosing a training distribution that differs from the deployment distribution. A methodological consequence is discussed: three distinct mechanisms generate curves indistinguishable in shape, so an observed learning curve does not allow one to judge the "internal" structure of the learning system.

Fairness evaluation of clinical prediction models for binary outcomes often involves fairness metrics that compare the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC, or c-statistic) across subgroups. However, the AUC has been shown to be a non-collapsible metric, meaning that its subgroup specific and overall values are not directly comparable as often implicitly assumed. This raises important questions about how existing AUC-based fairness metrics should be used and interpreted. We examine eight AUC-based fairness metrics proposed in the literature, including: within-group AUC parity; cross-group AUC (xAUC) parity; gap-to-overall AUC; equity-scaled AUC; minimum-based metrics; $\mathrm{xAUC}^1$; $\mathrm{xAUC}^0$; and $\mathrm{xAUC}^1$ or $\mathrm{xAUC}^0$ parity. We characterise their estimands, relate them to the decomposition of overall AUC (into within- and cross-group components), and critically appraise them. We then illustrate their behaviour using simulations based on the EuroSCORE II, a clinical prediction model for in-hospital mortality. We recommend reporting an AUC matrix, containing the overall AUC and all within- and cross-group AUC components, alongside population characteristics. When fairness metrics are needed, we recommend reporting the within-group AUC parity, with cross-group AUC parity providing supplementary information but requiring caution due to its potential conflict with calibration. Metrics involving $\mathrm{xAUC}^1$ and $\mathrm{xAUC}^0$ have merit, summarising within- and cross-group AUCs into single values, but their interpretation is non-trivial, and they should be used with caution. Gap-to-overall AUC, equity-scaled AUC, and minimum-based metrics compare quantities that should not be compared and it is unclear how to operationalise them, making them not fit for purpose and generally not recommended.

Flood peak depth on normally dry land governs damage and risk to life, but is observed only sparsely, by post-event high-water mark (HWM) surveys, and depth derived from satellite flood extent is produced after the event and inherits the vertical error of the digital elevation model (DEM) it is computed from. Deep-learning flood models have in turn been trained on hydrodynamic simulations rather than on observed depths. We ask whether flood peak depth can be learned from field observations and predicted before the peak from spaceborne terrain, geospatial foundation-model embeddings and antecedent meteorological forcing. We assembled 5689 USGS HWM surveys from 39 events (2011-2025) in 24 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, assigned each a peak time from nearby sensors, paired each with a rain-free window at the same site, and linked them to Copernicus GLO-30 terrain, AlphaEarth embeddings and 144 h of hourly forcing masked to the lead time. A cross-modal fusion network trained on these observations predicts depth at the surveyed marks with a mean absolute error of 0.39 m 6 h ahead of the peak. Supervision by surveyed depth corrects the DEM error implicitly: differencing the measured peak water level with the same DEM gives 0.93 m at the same marks, 2.4 times larger, although it uses the measured water level and the model does not. Forcing accounts for 77% of the attributed reduction in depth error; terrain and the embeddings are statistically equivalent to each other and contribute the remaining 23%. On eleven held-out events the model still separates flooded from rain-free conditions but no longer resolves depth at the marks (R2 = 0.03), so the skill reported here is confined to the events and regions sampled. Field-surveyed depths can thus supervise flood depth prediction and correct terrain error that extent-based estimation cannot, while transfer to unseen storms remains the open problem.

Sign language processing advances rapidly for high-resource languages such as American Sign Language (ASL), yet most of the world's sign languages lack the phonological annotations new methods require. We present the first zero-shot cross-lingual framework for handshape recognition, transferring from ASL to Catalan Sign Language (LSC). Our approach leverages the decomposition of handshapes into five phonological features -- selected fingers, flexion, spread, thumb position, and thumb contact -- shared across both languages, to decode LSC handshapes from predicted features via a composite phonological distance metric. We evaluate three architectures (MLP, SL-GCN, SHuBERT) trained on two ASL corpora (PopSign, Sem-Lex) against a 37-handshape, single-signer LSC benchmark. Zero-shot transfer proves viable once recording-format disparities are harmonized, reaching 80.0% phonological feature accuracy and 54.5% expected handshape accuracy. Phonological decomposition thus offers a bridge for extending sign language technologies to low-resource languages without any target-language video training labels.

Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) in Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) is often underpinned by deep neural networks (DNNs). Recent research has focused on relatively low-capacity DNNs (i.e., relatively fewer trainable parameters) to avoid overfitting on the small training datasets that are typically available for SAS. However, recent research has found that increasing DNN capacity often improves performance, even when training data is scarce. Motivated by this emerging finding - termed the double descent phenomenon - this work investigates the use of especially high-capacity DNNs for SAS-ATR. We evaluate the performance of several state-of-the-art DNN architectures as we increase their model capacity. We examine performance in a realistic leave-one-geo-location-out cross-validation scheme. We find that increasing model capacity often increases performance substantially, and is never harmful. All of our large models significantly outperform two baseline models from recent publications. Training high-capacity models on small dataset however requires careful regularization, and we also perform systematic experiments showing the impact of several regularization strategies: pretraining on other imaging modalities, data augmentation (including some new to SAS), DropPath, and weight decay. We show that each of these strategies independently improves the performance of the large models.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are pancreatic cancer precursors, and guideline-based risk stratification both over-treats indolent lesions and misses progression. We present Cyst-X, a public benchmark of 1,461 T1-weighted (T1W) and T2-weighted (T2W) MRI volumes from 764 patients at seven centers, with expert pancreas masks, risk labels, splits and reference AI risk-prediction models. PanSegNet segmented the pancreas with Dice of 86.34% (T1W) and 89.26% (T2W) on held-out centers. For the primary task, high-risk versus low-risk IPMN, a 3D DenseNet-121 achieved cross-validated AUCs of 74.59% and 73.45%; complementary broad binary and three-class tasks reached 78.67--81.28% and 73.47--75.76%. Because patient images often cannot be pooled across institutions, we also simulated federated learning across the seven centers. On T2W MRI, FedProx was similar to centralized training in center-averaged external AUC (71.00% versus 71.18%) but not in pooled AUC (62.35% versus 77.49%). Radiologist comparisons showed cohort-dependent sensitivity--specificity tradeoffs. Cyst-X supports reproducible method development and identifies within-IPMN risk discrimination and cross-center score comparability as open challenges.

Many Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) agents fail to adapt properly to cooperating with agents trained with the same objectives but different seeds, algorithms, or other training differences. This is the problem of Zero-Shot Coordination (ZSC), which focuses on training agents to cooperate well with unknown agents. ZSC has been studied for a variety of tabular cases and simple games such as Hanabi, achieving excellent results. However, existing solutions to ZSC only consider identical rewards for your trained agents and all future partners. This is not realistic for the trained agents, as they do not consider the problem of cooperating with agents that have identical sparse objectives but shape the rewards for those objectives in different manner. To address this issue, we show how to train an ensemble of methods using randomized reward shapings chosen using 4 selection algorithms. Experiments done on the Overcooked environment demonstrate consistent improvements of 62.2%-119.2% in sparse reward over baseline ZSC algorithms when playing with agents that have identical sparse rewards but different reward shapings.

Explaining Group Recommendations via Counterfactuals

Maria Stratigi, Nikos Bikakis, Kostas Stefanidis

原文摘要

Group recommender systems help users make collective choices but often lack transparency, leaving group members uncertain about why items are suggested. Existing explanation methods focus on individuals, offering limited support for groups where multiple preferences interact. In this work, we introduce and formalize the problem of finding counterfactual explanations for group recommendations. We introduce a comprehensive set of item- and explanation-level metrics that capture different aspects, such as relevance, popularity, explanation utility, interpretability, and fairness. We design five algorithms that employ techniques such as search-space pruning, greedy selection, early stopping, and incremental refinement to reduce computational cost and the number of recommender calls while producing high-quality explanations. The algorithms consider different trade-offs; for example, some prioritize computational efficiency at the expense of explanation quality, while others focus on improving explanation quality at a higher computational cost. Experiments on real-world datasets analyze these trade-offs in terms of explanation size, computational cost, utility, and fairness.

Physics-informed traditional and generative Mori-Zwanzig-reduced models for multiscale systems

Emily Williams, Saad Qadeer, Amanda Howard, Panos Stinis

原文摘要

Model reduction via the Mori-Zwanzig (MZ) formalism is well understood for coarse-grained representations constructed from standard basis functions such as Fourier functions. We show that the same formalism can be used to build reduced-order models in bases discovered by physics-informed machine learning. The fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) is used to close the resulting non-Markovian evolution equations for the expansion coefficients of the learned basis. We further introduce a complementary, generative closure model. Relative to the Markovian dynamics alone, both the MZ and generative closures substantially improve predictions of the filtered states.

Sparse Koopman Autoencoders Identify Local Dynamical Regimes in Multibasin Systems

Aidan Li, Uday Kiran Reddy Tadipatri, Mahan Fathi, Sarath Chandar, Ross Goroshin

原文摘要

Koopman autoencoders (KAEs) seek a higher-dimensional latent representation in which nonlinear dynamics evolve linearly. However, many interesting systems have multiple basins of attraction, and both theoretical and empirical work has shown these multibasin systems cannot generally admit a single finite-dimensional global Koopman embedding under standard assumptions. We posit that encoders with a sparsity-inducing objective encouraging few active latent coefficients will provide latent supports as an inspectable basin-modeling principle for Koopman autoencoders. We use these encoders producing sparse latents in training Sparse Koopman Autoencoders (SKAEs) without basin labels or other regime annotations, and treat the learned latent supports as model-produced regime variables after training. Across a range of procedurally generated multibasin systems and chaotic flows, we show that SKAEs have superior forecasting performance compared to dense-latent KAEs. We also perform a mechanistic study that shows latent supports produced by SKAEs are both essential for the quality of the representation and useful for identifying basins on basin-interior states, whereas dense-latent KAEs collapse to an uninformative single support family. These results identify sparse latents and their corresponding supports as label-free, interpretable regime variables for Koopman learning in nonlinear systems with multiple local dynamical laws.

原文摘要

We provide the first computationally efficient, differentially private algorithms for agnostically learning halfspaces. In particular, we study three different settings of agnostic learning: improper learning under Gaussian and log-concave marginals; proper learning under Gaussian marginals; and semi-agnostic learning under Gaussian marginals. In all three aforementioned settings, the added cost in the sample complexity due to privacy matches the respective non-private sample complexity, implying that we get privacy for free.

Multi-Objective Generative Optimization via Expected Hypervolume Fine-Tuning

Juan Guevara, Riccardo De Santi, Andreas Krause, Raul Astudillo

原文摘要

Scientific discovery requires plausible designs spanning useful trade-offs among competing properties: a molecule with strong binding affinity, for example, may be difficult to synthesize. Pretrained generative models, e.g., flow and diffusion generators, provide a foundation for proposing such designs, but steering them toward high-quality, complementary trade-offs remains challenging. Inference-time search incurs high per-sample costs, while fine-tuning typically relies on fixed per-candidate rewards that do not capture how designs complement one another. We introduce Hypervolume Fine-Tuning (HVFT), which adapts a single pretrained generator to maximize the expected hypervolume of its samples while controlling departure from the pretrained distribution. Expected hypervolume jointly rewards candidate quality and collective trade-off coverage. Nonetheless, we show that it cannot be expressed as the expectation of a fixed per-candidate reward and therefore cannot be optimized directly with standard techniques. A key observation of this work is that its first variation corresponds to the expected marginal hypervolume contribution of a candidate, which yields a tractable adaptive reward via an unbiased estimator based on model samples. HVFT uses this reward to decompose the objective into a sequence of KL-proximal scalar-reward subproblems. We establish concavity, relative smoothness, and convergence guarantees for the resulting distributional procedure. Across therapeutic-peptide and molecular design tasks spanning discrete diffusion and continuous flow-matching models, HVFT achieves state-of-the-art expected hypervolume and trade-off coverage.

DAMI: Dual-Axis Memory Initialization for Enhanced Long-Context Retrieval in Gated Linear Attention

Zhangchi Feng, Harry Jiang, Yangyifei Luo, Ray Zhang, Richong Zhang

原文摘要

Linear attention scales linearly with sequence length, but its finite-state memory can limit long-context retrieval. In gated linear recurrences, memory retention depends on state decay, which is shaped jointly by gate parameters A_log and dt_bias and by input activations. In controlled Gated DeltaNet (GDN) experiments, both parameters remain highly correlated with their initial values after training, highlighting the importance of initialization. Therefore, we introduce Dual-Axis Memory Initialization (DAMI), which jointly configures these parameters before training. DAMI assigns geometric timescales across heads for varied retrieval distances and a low-high-low input-sensitivity profile across layers. A small activation sample calibrates the GDN-family implementation to match both behavioral targets without adding trainable parameters. Across GDN, KDA, GDN2, Mamba-2, and RWKV-7, DAMI improves average RULER-style retrieval accuracy by 5.29 to 16.71 percentage points over the corresponding random-initialization baselines. Performance on language modeling, commonsense reasoning, and 2K real-world retrieval remains broadly comparable to those baselines. Our code is available at https://speedai.com/research/dami.

TAQ-MOTR: Tracking-Aware Detection Query Formation for End-to-End Multiple Object Tracking

Hanyang Liu, Hong Zhang, Ding Yuan, Yang Han, Yifan Yang

原文摘要

Tracking-by-propagation (TBP) methods perform end-to-end multi-object tracking by propagating track queries across frames, jointly handling detection and identity association without heuristic post-processing while naturally modeling temporal information. However, as detection and association are tightly coupled, detection queries in TBP are expected to discover currently untracked objects and provide complementary current-frame evidence for challenging tracks whose queries and identities are retained. Existing methods largely inherit detection-query formation from single-frame detection and construct such queries before the decoder with little awareness of trajectory states. Consequently, currently untracked objects may be missed, while challenging tracked objects with reduced visibility under occlusion may lack complementary evidence, causing association failures or duplicate responses. To address these issues, we propose TAQ-MOTR, a tracking-aware detection query formation framework that employs a pre-decoder Hybrid Query Generator (HQG) to fuse current-frame image features, track memory, and learnable memory. By conditioning detection queries on trajectory states, TAQ-MOTR adapts them to \rev{the discovery of currently untracked objects and tracked-object complementation We further introduce a training-only auxiliary detection branch whose one-to-one label assignment is decoupled from that of the main tracking branch, providing additional detection supervision to strengthen the shared HQG and decoder for the discovery of currently untracked objects. TAQ-MOTR improves performance on DanceTrack, SportsMOT, and BFT, achieving 72.0 HOTA, 63.1 AssA, and 76.6 IDF1 on the DanceTrack test set. Code is available at https://github.com/Magicmiya/TAQ-MOTR
