SafeStart: Mitigating the Overlooked Safety Cost of Active Expert Reduction in MoE LLM Serving

Erfan Baghaei Potraghloo, Saeid Shokoufa, Seyedarmin Azizi, Arya Fayyazi, Souvik Kundu, Mehdi Kamal, Massoud Pedram

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) language models send each token through a few of many expert subnetworks. Serving methods make these models faster by running even fewer experts per token, and they are validated on accuracy benchmarks. We show that these methods can weaken the model's refusal of harmful requests, and we introduce SafeStart, which largely restores refusal while keeping most of the speedup. In vLLM on one RTX A6000, keeping about two thirds of the selected experts speeds up offline decoding by 15 to 28% at batch size 8. We find that, at this setting, under a jailbreak that tells the model not to refuse, the share of harmful requests that the model answers rises by 18.4 percentage points on Qwen1.5-MoE, 9.5 on OLMoE, and 6.6 on DeepSeek-V2-Lite, the three of nine models where it rises significantly, while MMLU accuracy drops by less than two points. We discover that most of this increase arises while the model processes the prompt and generates its first few tokens. SafeStart therefore runs all experts for the prompt and the first eight generated tokens, and the reduced set of experts afterwards, through a fused kernel in vLLM. With experts removed, SafeStart keeps at least 85% of the offline decode speedup at batch sizes 8 and 32 and brings the change under this jailbreak to between -2.1 and +1.3 points for three expert-reduction methods on these three models. On 889 held-out requests, in an analysis fixed before generation, truncation raises harmful compliance by 5.8 to 21.4 points, and SafeStart leaves a rise of 0.6 to 2.6 points, non-inferior to the original model on two of the three models. Our results show that faster MoE serving need not cost safety: a serving system can keep most of the gain from running fewer experts by running all of them at the start of each response, and it should test refusal, not only accuracy, before it enables such a method.

KEPT: Conformal Keepouts Kept in Planning for Enclosed-Space Navigation in Degraded Sensing

Eric Minwoo Kim, Jong-Kook Kim

Autonomous vehicles in enclosed spaces such as tunnels and mines rely on range maps that smoke, dust and fog degrade. Conformal prediction calibrates a keepout around the mapped walls that covers the true unsafe set at a chosen probability. In narrow passages this margin and the planner's buffer close the route, and existing remedies recover reach by relaxing the coverage level. This paper conditions the conformal margin on a label-free severity estimate per viewing direction and sweep, holding per-class coverage near its target as degradation varies. A planning and control layer enforces one braking-distance condition on the keepout at plan time and at every command, takes the measured tracking residual as its only margin and never alters the keepout. The keepout is validated on ground-robot smoke recordings and the closed loop on simulated quadrotor flights in a foggy tunnel. The proposed system substantially reduces entries into the calibrated keepout and reaches numerically more goals than the deployment pattern in both calibration regimes. The per-class keepout holds its coverage near the target on held-out recordings.

PTQ4SAM3: Semantics-Preserving Post-Training Quantization for Segment Anything Model 3

Xi Xiao, Yunbei Zhang, Lin Zhao, Janet Wang, Xinru Jiang, Yanshu Li, Chenrui Ma, Pan Wang 等 10 位作者

Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM 3) can segment objects from text prompts and track them across video, but its memory and computation costs make deployment difficult. Post-training quantization (PTQ) reduces these costs by using fewer bits. However, a quantized model can select the wrong object or lose track of its target across frames. We call this prompt-alignment drift. Controlled tests show that perturbing low-variance feature directions strongly affects target selection. We propose Semantics-Preserving Quantization (SPQ), which gives more calibration weight to concept-sensitive parameters, preserves residual features, and corrects the mean error in video memory. Fixed text concepts guide calibration without task annotations. All three components operate offline and add no inference operators. With a W4A8 image encoder, SPQ improves RefCOCO Pr@0.5 from 42.1 to 72.5 over PTQ4SAM while retaining 54.8 COCO mask AP. Experiments on LVIS, RefCOCO variants, and SA-V show consistent gains. A CLIP study also shows improved image-text retrieval.

RDT-3D: Resolution-Decoupled Training for High-Fidelity 3D Geometry Generation

Jiale Zhang, Yang Liu, Chengyang Li, Jin Yuan, Qianxi Jia, Taicheng Huang

High-fidelity 3D geometry generation requires maintaining global structural coherence alongside fine-grained surface details. While recent coarse-to-fine frameworks leverage Rotary Position Embeddings (RoPE) to condition local queries, we reveal a critical training-inference resolution discrepancy: coordinate guidance and geometric supervision are aligned during training, whereas inference decodes high-resolution geometry from coarse spatial coordinates. This mismatch introduces a severe distribution shift that degrades fine details. To overcome this, we propose Resolution-Decoupled Training (RDT), which anchors RoPE guidance at 512 resolution while supervising geometry at 1536, enabling robust detail extrapolation. Additionally, to eliminate high-resolution data bottlenecks, we present Dual3D-300K, a large-scale paired dataset comprising 300K watertight 3D point clouds explicitly aligned across 512 and 1536 resolutions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that RDT substantially improves sharp geometric regions, while Dual3D-300K offers a scalable benchmark for high-resolution 3D generation.

Decoupling Knowledge and Privacy: Post-Task Self-Distillation Replay for LLM Continual Learning

Shengtao Wen, Yunying Yang, Xiang Chen, Lingbing Guo, Yu Tian, Sheng-Jun Huang

Privacy-preserving continual learning (PPCL) must reduce the reproduction of sensitive content while retaining useful knowledge across sequential tasks. Formal privacy guarantees characterize randomized mechanisms, whereas operational output control concerns whether a trained model selectively reduces the likelihood of sensitive content in its outputs. In this work, we investigate the latter together with continual-learning utility under realistic task evolution. Retention and privacy correction operate at different granularities: task acquisition requires broad preservation of current- and old-task behavior, whereas privacy correction targets sparse annotated positions. Joint optimization leaves the current-task preservation target continually changing. We propose SPARK, a retention-correction decomposition that first freezes the learned post-task distribution and then applies selective correction around this stable reference. Self-Distillation Replay learns the current task while distilling behavior from previous tasks, and Post-Task Privacy Correction reduces annotated-PII likelihood while anchoring current- and old-task non-PII behavior to the resulting checkpoint. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that SPARK achieves effective selective PII suppression while preserving strong continual-learning utility and knowledge retention across diverse settings. Code and data will be released upon publication.

Kriging and Neural Network models for pressure losses across perforated plates

Shuai Li

In this paper, two novel data-driven models based on Kriging and neural networks (NN) are proposed to predict pressure losses across perforated plates with circular perforations in turbulent flows. The models are developed using two sets of experimental data available in the literature. The predictive performance of the proposed models is assessed and compared against widely used empirical formulae. It is found that the proposed models consistently outperform existing empirical models for most perforated plate configurations contained in the experimental datasets. Besides, the predicted pressure losses generally show good agreement with experimental measurements, demonstrating that data-driven approaches based on Kriging and NN provide a feasible framework for modelling pressure losses across perforated plates. Overall, both approaches are promising, despite being trained on a relatively limited amount of experimental data, owing to the scarcity of measurements reported in the literature. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed models in numerical simulations, two-dimensional channel flows are simulated using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, in which the new pressure-loss models are implemented as a source term in the momentum equations. The RANS predictions are insensitive to mesh resolution and the number of cells used to represent the perforated plate, and they agree well with the model predictions, confirming the applicability of the proposed approaches to practical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

Accelerating Long-Context Decoding in Large-Scale Hybrid LLMs Without Retraining

João Eduardo Batista, Emil Vatai, Mohamed Wahib

The full-attention layers of large language models (LLMs) make every generated token more expensive than the previous one, slowing models down on long-context tasks. Hybrid models reduce this cost by replacing most full-attention layers with linear-attention layers, but the first still dominate decoding at long contexts. We accelerate these remaining layers without any training or weight changes using combined sparse attention: each layer attends to a sliding window of recent tokens, a pinned prefix, and a fixed budget of most relevant tokens in the context. The window size and budget are found on a per-layer basis using a multi-objective search algorithm. Across six hybrid models from three families, from 4B to 397B parameters, the selected configurations preserve their baseline model's accuracy on 21 long-context datasets. Decoding 64k/256k tokens becomes up to 1.26x/2.22x faster on Qwen3.5-4B, 1.20x/2.23x on Qwen3.5-122B-A10B, and 1.16x/2.06x on Ornith-1.0-397B.

A Mode-Unified, Continuous, and Biomimetic Control Strategy of a Robotic Lower Limb Prosthesis

Hanjun Kim, Sixu Zhou, John Shim, Xinyuan Guo, Kinsey R. Herrin, Aaron J. Young

Existing biomimetic lower-limb prosthesis controllers are commonly designed for discrete locomotion modes, requiring separate parameterizations for level walking, ramps, and stairs. We present a mode-unified prosthesis control framework that represents knee and ankle biomechanics continuously as functions of terrain slope and gait phase across those locomotion conditions. Locally optimized ascent and descent polynomial models were unified using radial basis function (RBF) interpolation, preserving the accuracy of the partitioned models while outperforming a global polynomial representation. The resulting biomechanics were transformed into continuous and slope-dependent impedance parameters and implemented within a single finite-state-machine (FSM) controller using bilateral sensing for gait-state estimation. Experiments with 10 individuals with transfemoral amputation demonstrated terrain-adaptive locomotion from level walking through ramps and stairs up to 35 degrees, including 13 degree ramp and 15 degree stair conditions absent from the underlying able-bodied (AB) dataset. Experimental results reproduced the principal slope-dependent biomechanical trends predicted by the unified model, with high agreement for knee-related measures (r-square = 0.82 - 0.99) and ankle kinematics (r-square= 0.78 - 0.96). These findings demonstrated that unified biomechanical parameterization enables a prosthesis control architecture across diverse terrain conditions while preserving key features of AB biomechanics without requiring independently tuned impedance parameter sets for each locomotion mode. To facilitate reproducibility and further development, the biomechanics modeling and impedance parameterization code is publicly available at https://github.com/kim2576.

Growing One's AI Tools: A Paradigm of Practice-Grown Tools

Zeming Zhao

Professionals have long used software built for them by others. This article reports the growth of a professional computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tool built by its own user, a conference interpreter without programming training. Drawing on an eight-week version-controlled record with telemetry from 133 logged sessions and over 20,000 recognized utterances, the article traces how real conference work drove the tool through 62 commits and six versions. The record shows capabilities deployed on the day their need appeared and one strategy change that cut median end-to-end delay by over a third within one afternoon. The article then proposes the paradigm of practice-grown tools, defined by the shift from using to growing, the co-evolution of tool and practice through breakdown and repair, bounded local computation, and an assessment corollary, and it formulates three propositions toward tool-inclusive assessment of practitioners, from tool-making literacy to a compute-standardized format for certifying what they and their tools achieve together.

ModalSearcher: Weaving Visual Evidence into Autonomous Cross-Modal Deep Search

Zhihan Yin, Ruyi Li, Chengyu Fang, Yifeng Yao, Nonghai Zhang, Pengfei Xiong, Terry Zhang, Huishuai Zhang 等 9 位作者

Static and incomplete parametric knowledge limits the performance of multimodal large language models on novel-knowledge and knowledge-intensive tasks, especially those requiring multi-hop evidence acquisition. Existing multimodal agentic search methods often fix visual evidence at the input or a predefined trajectory position, making it difficult for agents to select search modalities as their information needs evolve and to handle complex real-world queries. We define this capability as autonomous cross-modal search: an agent chooses among direct reasoning, text-to-text search, text-to-image search, and reverse-image search, actively introduces visual evidence when appropriate, and switches between and integrates modalities across multiple hops. We propose ModalSearch-Pipeline, a scalable procedure for constructing an interleaved multimodal knowledge graph. It samples paths with diverse depths and modality compositions and uses backward question construction to obscure entity names and image targets that would expose reasoning shortcuts while retaining necessary disambiguating clues, yielding text-only, image-initialized, and arbitrarily interleaved multi-hop problems. We train the ModalSearcher Agent with supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning in a live Web environment, and construct ModalSearch-Bench. Experiments show that ModalSearcher-8B improves average accuracy by 16.2 points over Qwen3-VL-8B under the same agentic workflow across five multimodal knowledge-intensive QA benchmarks, with consistent gains on independently constructed active visual-search benchmarks.

Final Checkpoints Are Not Enough: Analyzing Latent Reasoning Faithfulness Along Training Trajectories

Hengyu Jin, Shu Yang, Di Wang

Latent reasoning performs multi-step inference in continuous hidden states, promising more compact and efficient reasoning. However, these opaque states raise a question of faithfulness: whether the latent reasoning steps drive the final answer. Prior work reports unfaithful behaviors at selected checkpoints, leaving their development during training unexamined. We track behavioral and activation-based evidence across training using verified counterfactual edits and interventions on the latent reasoning states. We find that accuracy can improve while models become less responsive to edits that change the required reasoning path and the correct answer. This counterfactual responsiveness follows distinct trajectories across latent reasoning approaches. On the graph reachability task ProsQA, output sensitivity to noise replacement declines alongside counterfactual responsiveness. Across separately trained binary-choice and open-ended versions of GSM8K math problems, interventions on all latent states show opposite sensitivity trajectories. Guided by these trajectories, we intervene on the training procedure and improve counterfactual responsiveness. These results show that evaluating only a final checkpoint can obscure both when counterfactual responsiveness changes and what the latent states contribute.

Short-Term Forecasting of Heterogeneous Wind Power Fleets: Global Temporal Fusion Transformer Leveraging Static Covariates

Viktor Walter, Andreas Wagner

Accurate short-term wind power forecasting is critical for grid stability and electricity trading. While transformer-based deep learning is state of the art, industry practice relies mostly on local models trained for individual assets. This study investigates whether a global temporal fusion transformer (TFT), trained jointly on a heterogeneous portfolio of wind farms across Germany, outperforms site-specific local models in 48-hour-ahead forecasting. Using numerical weather prediction (NWP) data from the regional ICON-D2 and the global ECMWF HRES models, we compare the global TFT against local models and a linear regression baseline. The global model leverages static covariates, such as farm age, altitude above sea level, hub height, rotor diameter and power curve parameters, to learn shared representations across sites. We evaluate on 100 synthetic wind farm profiles and a real portfolio of 11 German wind farms, across two seasonal test periods with intermediate retraining. The global TFT outperforms the local models for 87% of the synthetic and 77% of the real wind farms and clearly surpasses the linear baseline. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests confirm that these gains are significant across both seasons and datasets. Crucially, this superiority depends on static covariates: without asset-specific context, the global model fails to generalize. The TFT's variable selection network (VSN) reveals the learned feature selection. Altitude emerges as a relevant static discriminator on both datasets, while hub height is decisive on the real portfolio. For dynamic inputs, the encoder prioritizes historical power, whereas the decoder combines upper-level wind speeds from both NWP models, consistent with averaging out model-specific errors. These findings support a shift from single-site to scalable multi-site forecasting, reducing operational complexity while improving accuracy in large portfolios.

From Representations to Behaviors: Exploring the Person-Situation-Behavior Triad in LLMs

Ruikang Zhang, Shuo Wang, Qi Su

Human personality theories characterize traits not as isolated attributes captured by a single score, but as stable individual tendencies expressed through the interplay among persons, situations, and behaviors. Existing studies of personality-related behavior in LLMs have primarily focused on outputs elicited under personality conditioning, characterizing observable trait-related expressions while lacking mechanistic evidence for the existence of internal personality-related representations, their cross-situational expression, and how these representations shape specific behaviors. Building on Funder's personality triad framework, we adapt its three components for LLM analysis: Person as personality-related internal representations, Situation as contexts that afford trait-relevant responses, and Behavior as response patterns on broader social tasks. We introduce a framework for discovering, controlling, and validating trait-like representations in LLMs. First, using contrastive behavior pairs grounded in shared situations, we identify sparse internal features associated with opposing poles of personality traits through SAE decomposition. We validate their trait relevance through effects on behavior to situation, token-level activation patterns, and robustness to paraphrasing. Second, feature-level interventions induce bidirectional trait-related shifts across a separate, diverse set of situations while preserving response validity, demonstrating consistent expression across contexts. Third, applying the same interventions to social intelligence tasks reveals behavioral changes with benefit-tradeoff patterns consistent with findings from human personality research, providing behavioral-level validation beyond personality scores. Our findings provide evidence that LLMs contain controllable trait-like representations linking internal states, situational expression, and behavioral outcomes.

From Handcrafted to Generative: RLVR-Optimized Icon Generation for Alexa+

Rohan Sequeira, Matthew Rosenberg, Amin Mahmoudabadbozchelou, Oleg Poliannikov, Jonathan Rubin

Alexa+ devices with screens display animated icons during conversations to visually reinforce what is being said. The original set of these icons was hand-drawn by designers one at a time, a process that produces polished results but is time-consuming and cannot scale to the range of topics encountered in open-ended conversation. We describe an automated pipeline, deployed in production, that generates these vectorised animated icons from a text description alone and surfaces relevant animations to customers based on their ongoing conversation. The pipeline decomposes icon creation into a sequence of stages (image generation, semantic decomposition, vectorisation, styling, and animation). Its quality is determined at the very first of these, image generation, on which every downstream stage depends. We therefore focus on improving this first and most critical stage. Because the icons are rendered on small display canvases under strict design guidelines, generations are often unsuitable for production. Supervised fine-tuning is not viable, as no dataset of line-art icons exists under these constraints. Instead, we design objective verifiers that automatically flag generations violating the design guidelines, and use them to fine-tune a flow matching image generation model via reinforcement learning from verifiable rewards (RLVR). The fine-tuned model raises the pass rate from 15.7% to 58.7% (3.7x) under a VLM judge that is independent of the reward model. Both the trained model and the verifier are deployed in the production pipeline, where the verifier also serves as the automated quality gate before final design review.

Ab Initio Accuracy Beyond the Cutoff: Distributed Message-Passing Equivariant Attention at Tens-of-Millions-of-Atom Scale

Allex Kan, Ji Zhang, Hao Yin, Hao Li, Owen Fu, Xunxing Chen, Lin Huang, Zion Wang 等 13 位作者

Molecular dynamics predicts molecular motion from atomic forces and trajectory integration. Density functional theory (DFT) provides first-principles forces, but its $O(N^3)$ cost limits simulations to thousands of atoms; empirical force fields scale to millions but miss bond breaking and charge transfer. Equivariant message-passing Transformers learn the ab initio potential at linear cost. Stacked layers propagate information beyond a single cutoff, giving four layers a receptive field up to 23Å. At this frontier, scale is limited by communication: layers exchange boundary features across devices, force backpropagation repeats the exchange, and moving atoms change neighbor graphs and tensor shapes. We present Tessera, a distributed runtime that fixes workload shapes between rebuilds. It sorts atoms along a space-filling curve into equal-count shards, ensuring identical atom counts and tensor shapes per rank. Peer sets scale as $K^{0.5}$, not $K$. A conservative neighbor skin preserves topology across updates, enabling each rebuild interval to replay as one CUDA Graph. Fused kernels, three-level neighbor search, and overlapped All-to-All complete it. On 512 GPUs, Tessera sustains 30.7M atoms at 89.7% weak-scaling efficiency (77--90% across three per-GPU loads); per-step time rises 1.11--1.29x as machine and problem grow 16x. Graph reuse cuts full-step time $1.87\times$. Across an $8\times$ device increase, neighbor-search cost grows $1.7\times$, versus $3.0\times$ for Morton order. In a live $10.24$M-atom salt solution, NVE energy drift is $0.42\,μ$eV/atom/ps over $10$ ps, and structure matches a serial reference. A 10.06M-atom Norovirus capsid sustains 100 ps of NVT at $\approx 8$ ps/day on 256 A100 GPUs. Over 200,000 steps, it has no broken bonds or anomalously close pairs and uses three compiled variants, with no graph breaks or eager fallbacks.

3D Pose Estimation in Projection Space via Pixel-level Visible Light Communication

Michikuni Eguchi, Takefumi Hiraki

Projector-based augmented reality enables natural interaction between users and devices by overlaying digital information onto the physical world through projected imagery. A key technical requirement of such systems is accurate positional alignment between the projector and the devices. Pixel-level Visible Light Communication (PVLC) achieves this alignment without external sensing infrastructure by embedding invisible spatial codes into each projected pixel through high-speed brightness modulation that preserves image quality. However, the information that PVLC transmits is inherently planar. PVLC has therefore been limited to devices moving on a flat surface and cannot estimate the 3D pose of devices in three-dimensional space, such as aerial robots. To extend PVLC-based pose estimation to three dimensions, we formulate it as a Perspective-n-Point (PnP) problem. The 2D pixel positions that four coplanar photosensors on the device receive via PVLC serve as the image points, and their known 3D layout provides the object points. Experiments show that the proposed system estimates 3D pose with a latency of approximately 8~ms and a 3D position RMSE of 19.2~mm after Kalman filtering. These results confirm the first realization of real-time 3D pose estimation coordinated with high-quality projected image content without external sensing infrastructure.

ReactWorld: Structuring Interaction Responses for Embodied Video Generation

Hanwei Liu, Huijia Zhang, Hanzhang Wang, Guangyu Liu, Hanbei Zhan, Linjie Hu, Bin Xiao, Xuan Zhou 等 9 位作者

Embodied video world models predict scene changes caused by robot actions, yet generated object responses may remain inconsistent with task intent and contact dynamics. Critical responses in embodied scenes often concentrate in local regions and specific time intervals. Inspired by chain-of-thought reasoning, we introduce ReactWorld, an embodied video generation model guided by structured interaction anticipation. In the generation backbone's feature space, an interaction response field predictor anticipates how the interaction will unfold, explicitly describing participant roles, future motion response intensity, and local motion changes. A response feedback adapter forms increments to object features from the difference between the object branch's outputs with predicted and zeroed local dynamics inputs. It also converts predicted displacements into positional biases for temporal attention. These two mechanisms guide object feature updates and information retrieval across frames, respectively. Through interaction anticipation and generative feedback, ReactWorld achieves an average score of 77.51 on RBench, outperforming PhysisForcing by 3.29 points with improvements in all nine categories. On EZS-Bench, it achieves a Domain score of 86.98 and an average score of 81.87.

Online Adaptation to Latent Physical Properties for Learning from Demonstration

Kotaro Kajitsuka, Masaki Murooka, Fumio Kanehiro

Manipulating visually identical objects with different physical properties requires adapting actions based on information acquired through interaction. We address the problem of learning from demonstrations how to adapt manipulation actions, such as regrasping and changing contact locations, based on physical-property information acquired during interaction. To this end, we propose a learning-from-demonstration method that learns latent representations of physical properties needed to predict object responses and conditions a policy on online estimates of these representations. A dynamics model and object-specific latent representations are jointly learned from demonstrations that include behaviors adapting to the objects' physical properties, and the learned representations are then used to condition an imitation policy. During execution, the dynamics model and policy weights remain fixed, while the latent representation is updated based on the discrepancy between predicted and actual observations, allowing interaction with the object to inform action generation. Real-world and simulation experiments with objects whose centers of mass differ suggest that online adaptation through latent representations of physical properties can improve task success rates. However, in simulation, success rates on center-of-mass locations absent from the demonstrations remained around 30%, indicating limited adaptation to unseen physical properties. The Harness Is the Model: Agent Scaffolding Changes a Fixed LLM's Compliance with Banking Conduct Rules, Unevenly Across Models

Mehmet Murat Huyut

Banks validate language models, but they deploy systems: a model inside a harness that decides what it sees, which tools it can call and who checks its actions. We test whether that harness changes compliance with banking conduct rules when the model is held fixed. Four open-weight models each ran five harnesses (a pipeline that makes one structured decision, a ReAct-style tool loop, a loop in which the policy is reachable only through search, a loop with a long benign customer memory, and a loop with a same-model compliance reviewer) on 156 pre-registered cases in a simulated retail bank whose 11 rule families paraphrase EU consumer-credit, payments, investor-protection, data-protection and anti-money-laundering provisions. Every one of the 3120 two-turn episodes was scored deterministically from the executed tool trace, with violations and over-refusals counted separately. Pooled across models the harness moved the correct-case rate only between 87.3% and 92.1%, but within a model it mattered a great deal: for one model the spread between its best and worst harness was 11.5 percentage points, enough to move it from first to last place among the four models, while for another the harness made no detectable difference; the model x harness interaction itself was suggestive rather than conclusive. The same-model reviewer cut violations from 9.6% to 6.4% without raising over-refusals, contrary to our pre-registered prediction. Rules that require date arithmetic failed in every harness. In an exploratory analysis with two LLM judges and a blind human check, 26% of violations were accompanied by a customer message that denied the action the agent had just executed, which a transcript-only review would record as a correct refusal. For model-risk management the unit of validation should be the model-harness pair, and conduct testing should read the action log, not the conversation.

Semantic Prior-Guided Incomplete Cross-Modal Retrieval with Noisy Labels

Jiali Chen, Ruitao Pu, Yingke Chen, Dezhong Peng

Cross-modal retrieval (CMR) aims to bridge the semantic gaps between modalities by learning shared representations. Unfortunately, due to the dynamism and inconsistencies in real-world data acquisition, multimodal datasets frequently encounter severe modality incompleteness. Existing incomplete CMR methods adhere to a label-driven paradigm, relying heavily on categorical annotations as the semantic benchmark. However, label noise is difficult to avoid and often coexists with modality incompleteness. To address this challenge, we propose a novel semantic prior-guided framework for incomplete cross-modal retrieval with noisy labels, termed SPIRN. Specifically, SPIRN uses fixed semantic priors as a consistent reference for robust representation learning, noisy-label handling, and missing-modality completion. Based on this reference, Semantic Priors Guidance (SPG) establishes a stable category-level semantic space, Quality-aware Robust Learning (QRL) dynamically evaluates sample quality to distinguish clean samples from noisy ones and handles noise via reverse learning, Prior-guided Global Label Calibration (PGLC) rectifies corrupted annotations for refined supervision, and Confidence-driven Selective Imputation (CSI) recovers missing modalities from a cross-modal memory bank while filtering unreliable imputations with an increasing threshold. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first framework to jointly tackle the dual challenges of modality incompleteness and label noise in the CMR community. Extensive experiments on four widely used benchmark datasets demonstrate that SPIRN outperforms 11 state-of-the-art methods in various scenarios involving both missing modalities and noisy labels.

FrameScout: Scouting Query-Relevant Frames for Long Video Understanding

Haonan Hu, Shuhao Chen, Weisen Jiang, Lizhao Gao, James Kwok, Yu Zhang

Long video understanding requires VideoLLMs to answer queries about videos spanning tens of minutes to hours, but such long videos produce far more visual tokens than current VideoLLMs can process. To address this issue, keyframe selectors are proposed to select the most query-relevant frames by computing the similarity between frame and query embeddings. Existing selectors either encode frames independently without temporal context or process chunks in isolation with ranking objectives that are difficult to optimize. To alleviate those limitations, we propose FrameScout with two core designs: (i) a streaming selector architecture that leverages a sliding-window KV cache and successor aggregation to produce temporally-contextualized frame embeddings; (ii) a frame-query contrastive objective that aligns frame and query embeddings in a shared space, directly training the selector to distinguish relevant frames from irrelevant ones. Extensive experiments on three long-video benchmarks and six base VideoLLMs demonstrate that FrameScout consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance. Code is available at https://github.com/Hubert-1102/FrameScout.

Beyond Risk Cues: A Mechanism-Level Benchmark and Verifiable Debate for Scam Video Detection on the Web

Yifan Wang, Junyu Lu, Shun Zhang, Chaozhuo Li, Fanliang Bu, Rong Yin, Lingbin Bu, Changrong Min 等 9 位作者

Online scam videos pose significant threats to individuals and society. Existing studies primarily focus on binary classification, offering limited insights into how scams work and the reasoning behind detection decisions. Moreover, they often overlook the challenge of distinguishing scam videos from superficially similar non-scam content, such as advertisements, and the robustness of detection models against misleading arguments. These limitations hinder reliable scam video detection. To address these limitations, we introduce MechScam, a benchmark comprising 6,614 videos covering diverse scam mechanisms and non-scam categories. MechScam provides explanations supported by video evidence, annotations of potential scam elements and their context, and misleading arguments constructed from genuine evidence. Recognizing that genuine evidence can still be used to justify misleading conclusions, we further propose ScamCourt, a debate framework in which trained prosecution and defense debaters present opposing arguments, while a trained judge makes decisions based on a transcript with verified citations. Extensive experiments show that state-of-the-art MLLMs struggle to distinguish scam videos from similar non-scam content. ScamCourt outperforms larger MLLMs and same-backbone fine-tuned baselines, reducing false positives and showing stronger resistance to misleading arguments. Together, MechScam and ScamCourt contribute to more reliable and interpretable scam video detection. The dataset and code are available at https://github.com/SuperYFan/MechScam.

Learning When to Think Aloud in Latent Reasoning

Zhehao Zhou, Tongrui Su, Shengyu Zhu, Da Li, Zeyu Liu, Jun Zhu, Xueqi Cheng

Latent Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning improves efficiency by shifting intermediate computation into continuous hidden states. However, fully latent methods often struggle on precision-critical tasks such as mathematical reasoning, while existing hybrid approaches retain substantial token-generation overhead. We introduce VITAL, an importance-guided hybrid reasoning framework that selectively verbalizes informative tokens as reasoning anchors while keeping most computation latent. A lightweight gating head dynamically selects between explicit token generation and direct hidden-state feedback. VITAL constructs hybrid trajectories from explicit CoT using token- importance estimation and trains the model through curriculum-based supervised training, followed by reinforcement learning with a reward that balances correctness and conciseness. Experiments show that VITAL consistently out- performs existing fully latent reasoning methods, achieving relative average accuracy gains of 9.6% on GPT-2 and 5.1% on Llama-3.2-1B at comparable reasoning lengths. Compared with hybrid baselines, VITAL achieves higher reasoning accuracy with substantially shorter reasoning trajectories on Qwen3-1.7B.

XuanJian-DINOSAR: A SAR Foundation Model Based on Global and Local Semantic Consistency

Chunxiao Wu, Huixin Huang, Jialei Pan, Qiang Liang, Tao Wu, Cheng Wu, Long Huang, Yuanji Li 等 12 位作者

Self-supervised pre-training on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery enables transferable representations, but the optical-SAR domain gap and speckle perturbations limit representation stability. Most SAR foundation models use masked image modeling (MIM) through pixel reconstruction or structural feature prediction, which is sensitive to speckle or relies on predefined operators. Joint modeling of cross-view semantics and perturbation stability at corresponding spatial locations remains underexplored. We propose XuanJian-DINOSAR, a SAR foundation model based on global and local semantic consistency. We curate over 360K publicly available SAR target chips, detection images, and scene images spanning diverse targets, scenes, and sensors, and adapt an optically pre-trained DINOv2 model to SAR through self-supervised learning. The framework combines DINO global semantic self-distillation, iBOT local masked modeling, and KoLeo feature-distribution regularization to learn globally discriminative and locally structure-aware representations. We introduce a local semantic consistency branch tailored to SAR intensity statistics and coherent imaging characteristics. Shared geometric transformations produce spatially aligned teacher weak views and student strong views. Intensity transformations and Gamma multiplicative speckle perturbations are applied to student views, while a cosine consistency loss aligns patch tokens at corresponding locations, promoting stability under radiometric perturbations. This objective complements the cross-region and cross-scale semantic consistency of DINOv2 multi-crop training, jointly enforcing global and local semantic consistency. Experiments on multiple downstream classification and detection datasets demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on most evaluation metrics, validating the generality and transferability of the learned representations.

AEON: Unifying Video and 3D World Models

Weiqi Zhang, Wenyuan Zhang, Yu-Shen Liu, Junsheng Zhou

Current world models for explicit world simulation typically follow two distinct pathways: (1) video generative models (e.g., Sora), which simulate realistic appearances but fail to preserve 3D consistency; and (2) 3D generative models (e.g., Marble), which generate geometrically consistent scenes but often yield static, less realistic observations. We present AEON, a unified framework that bridges video-based and 3D-based world models and combines the benefits of both. The key insight of AEON lies in a generative model that operates within the text- or image-conditioned video latent space while producing renderable 4D graphics primitives---specifically, 4D Gaussian Splatting (4DGS)---as the explicit world representation. We train a 4D reconstruction model to predict both 4DGS and camera poses from monocular videos, serving as our initialized 4D decoder. Furthermore, we design a domain adapter that translates generative video latents into reconstructive 4D latents through a distillation process on the video VAE. AEON naturally supports video-based world modeling by rendering 4DGS at predicted camera trajectories, and constructs a persistent 4D environment with scene dynamics for realistic world simulation. Consequently, AEON empowers a diverse range of world modeling applications and achieves state-of-the-art performance on standard benchmarks. Project Page: https://weiqi-zhang.github.io/AEON

Reconciling Privacy with Provenance for Language Model Watermarks

Elise L. Han, Tatsunori Hashimoto

Watermarking has great potential for regulating the use of language models (LMs), but its deployment has been marred by controversy, as many users argue that fine-grained tracking of LM usage violates their privacy. This tension reduces the effectiveness of watermarks, as users engage in evasion strategies such as paraphrasing that can remove much of the watermark signal. We show that provenance and privacy can be reconciled if we shift the goal of watermark design from tracking individuals to estimating aggregate usage. We develop locally differentially private watermarks which provably limit the evidence that any individual text can contribute to detection, while still enabling accurate estimation of population frequencies. We introduce the Red-Green Sequence (RGS) watermark, a private and computationally efficient watermark that achieves accurate frequency estimation at high privacy levels across various models, sample sizes and generation entropies in settings that reflect realistic deployment scenarios. On C4 language modeling tasks, we attain $0.0019$ MSE with $0.0038$ mean absolute bias at a low $\varepsilon$ of 1, while in more challenging settings such as an essay writing task with only 100 text samples, we still find errors on the order of $0.0113$ MSE with $0.004$ mean absolute bias at $\varepsilon=2$.

Grammar-Constrained Decoding Can Jailbreak LLMs into Generating Malicious Code

Yitong Zhang, Shiteng Lu, Jia Li

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used for code generation, raising concerns that they may be misused to produce malicious code. Meanwhile, Grammar-Constrained Decoding (GCD) has been widely adopted to improve the reliability of LLM-generated code by enforcing syntactic validity. In this paper, we reveal a counterintuitive risk: this reliability-oriented technique can itself become an attack surface. We uncover a new jailbreak attack, termed CodeSpear, that exploits GCD to induce LLMs into generating malicious code. Our experiments show that simply applying a benign code grammar constraint can effectively jailbreak LLMs. To address this vulnerability, we propose CodeShield, a safety alignment approach that robustly preserves safe behavior even under attacker-controlled grammar constraints. CodeShield aligns the model in the code modality by teaching it to generate honeypot code under GCD. Such code is semantically harmless, so it does not implement the malicious request, and structurally diverse, so it is difficult to suppress through grammar tightening. At the same time, CodeShield still preserves natural-language refusals when natural language is available. Experiments on 10 popular LLMs across 4 benchmarks show that CodeSpear outperforms representative jailbreak baselines and increases the attack success rate by more than 30 percentage points on average. CodeShield also restores safety under CodeSpear while preserving benign utility. Our findings reveal a fundamental risk of GCD and call for greater attention to its potential security implications.

Many Pixels, One Composition: Self-Supervised Spectra for Specimen-Level Prediction

Eleftheria Tetoula-Tsonga, George Arvanitakis, Theodoros Giannakas

Can hyperspectral (HS) imaging be used to predict the elemental composition of physical specimens found on the Earth's surface? We approach this problem as a supervised regression task, using an open dataset of specimens, each comprising a HS cube and elemental characterization. In particular, we train an encoder in a self-supervised fashion that operates on pixel-level; then freeze the encoder and train a lightweight attention-based regression head in a supervised manner, by pairing many representations of a given specimen with its corresponding elemental label. In test specimens, our approach significantly outperforms traditional spectral matching and unmixing baselines. It also outperforms supervised learning models based on the mean spectrum (of similar model capacity), while full model fine-tuning achieves the strongest performance, at substantially higher model capacity.

Reasoning-Trace Overflow in Code Generation: An Empirical Study of Explicit Reasoning Models

Lukas Twist, Helen Yannakoudakis, Jie M. Zhang

Explicit reasoning can help language models generate code, but it also introduces a practical risk: the model may spend so much of its output budget reasoning that it never produces usable code. We study this behaviour in relatively small open-weight reasoning models, framing it as reasoning-trace overflow. Across seven models and six code benchmark settings, we measure how much of a fixed 32k-token output budget is spent on reasoning, whether that reasoning improves pass@1, and whether lightweight inference-time controls can mitigate overflow. Our results show that the value of reasoning is highly conditional. Overflow is rare on simpler function-level tasks, but becomes common on harder code-generation benchmarks and for particular model families: on several model--benchmark pairs, more than half of generations exhaust the full 32k-token budget while still reasoning. Most complete overflow is associated with repetitive reasoning loops, although substantial long reasoning also occurs without looping. Disabling reasoning can therefore be competitive for overflow-prone models, simply because it ensures that an answer is produced. At the same time, reasoning remains valuable for stronger models on harder algorithmic and code-understanding tasks. Finally, prompt steering can substantially reduce overflow for some models but is inconsistent, while budgeted transitions provide more direct control and can improve both performance and token efficiency for overflow-prone models. These findings suggest that explicit reasoning should be treated as a controllable resource for code generation, rather than an always-on capability.

Drift-adaptive Representation Preservation for Domain-Incremental Learning

Hyunmin Kong, Gyutae Oh, Jitae Shin

Pretrained vision models provide strong general-purpose representations, but in Domain-Incremental Learning (DIL), where the input distribution changes sequentially, adapting to new domains often degrades performance on previously learned ones. We observe that forgetting is not uniform across domains and classes and is not explained by training order alone. This motivates us to track each past domain-class concept individually. We use representation drift, defined as the deviation of a past concept's current representation from a fixed anchor, as a measurable surrogate for forgetting risk. The measured drift then serves two complementary roles. A consolidation loss assigns stronger preservation to high-drift pairs, while prototype construction down-weights highly drifted domains to reduce their influence on the class reference. Preservation is thus allocated by measured drift rather than assumed importance. To obtain this signal during training without storing past raw data, we repurpose a Joint-Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA). For each domain-class pair, we store only a compact context summary in the backbone feature space and rerun it through the learned context-to-target relation to measure its drift from the fixed anchor. Across DomainNet, Office-Home, CORe50, and CDDB-Hard, our method sustains a strong accuracy-forgetting balance on every benchmark, using substantially less training memory than accuracy-competitive methods and the smallest storage among compared methods.
