Learning a universal action representation from video requires modeling dynamics that are consistent across different executions of the same action yet invariant to changes in embodiment and appearance. Existing latent action models infer actions from visual transitions, but their representations often entangle the underlying action with irrelevant visual variations, limiting transfer across embodiments. We introduce DreamX, which repurposes a pretrained video diffusion model as a universal latent action learner. Our approach extracts compact latent actions from the video model's rich spatiotemporal features, compressing each latent video frame by $\boldsymbol{300\times}$ ($\boldsymbol{1{,}200 \rightarrow 4}$ tokens). In addition, by leveraging the video model's generative prior, these latent actions capture action-relevant dynamics disentangled from visual appearance. The resulting latent space serves as a shared action interface across embodiments (human and robot), environments, and action parameterizations. On LARY-Bench, DreamX achieves state-of-the-art performance among latent action models. Moreover, actions encoded in one setting remain effective in another: the latent space supports any-to-any video transfer and zero-shot action transfer across diverse embodiments and environments. Furthermore, this shared interface also enables policy learning in a compact latent action space, reducing the computational cost of video-diffusion-based policies.
From Autonomous Agents to Cognitive Symbionts: Toward AI-Augmented Human Intelligence

For a decade, progress in artificial intelligence has been measured by how much a machine can do on its own. Large foundation models now write code and run multistep tasks, and personal agents act on a person's behalf. Yet people still forget what they once knew, miss what they are not looking at, fail to find the right words, and face hard choices without the benefit of their own history, because the machine that could help stands outside the situation. As AI moves into the physical world, attention has settled on one kind of intelligent individual, the embodied robot; we argue that the era of Physical AI holds a second kind of equal importance, the person augmented by AI. Alongside artificial general intelligence, which asks how intelligent a machine can be, stands AI-augmented human intelligence (AHI), which asks how much intelligence a machine can enable in a particular person. Realizing it calls for a new kind of system, a cognitive symbiont: a lifelong, embedded, real-time, private, low-friction, and proactive companion that senses what the person senses through external devices, keeps their context across years, models their situation and their mind, takes part in their thinking at the right moment, carries out everyday tasks with their context, and keeps learning the person as both change. We give the paradigm a conceptual core, the cognitive gap between what a person could bring to a situation and what they can hold in working memory, and organize its design space as a symbiosis loop of sensing, keeping, understanding, living alongside, acting for and thinking with the person, and growing, enclosed by a personal runtime and by trust. Because a symbiont changes what a person can do in front of others, it also raises risks of a new kind, from covert assistance in examinations to pressure on everyone to adopt it, and we treat their governance as part of the paradigm.

Direct Nash Optimization (DNO) aligns a language model to a general preference function by approximating the Nash equilibrium of a two-player preference game. Its practical variant, DNO-Prct, iterates on-policy sampling, LLM-based rating of the samples together with a teacher's gold response, large-margin preference-pair selection and a DPO-style contrastive update. We re-implement DNO-Prct independently and study it on two open-weight instruct models, Llama 3.1 8B Instruct and Mistral 7B Instruct v0.1, with GPT-4o or a larger open-weight model of the same family as the annotator. On AlpacaEval 2.0 with GPT-4o as judge, three iterations raise the length-controlled (LC) win rate against GPT-4o from 31.7% to 45.3% for Llama and from 6.8% to 18.4% for Mistral, and the tuned 8B model scores above Llama 3.1 70B Instruct on every reported win rate. With same-family open-weight annotators, the runs retain 62% (Llama) and 82% (Mistral) of the LC gain achieved with GPT-4o as annotator, so the rating step does not require a proprietary model. In a separate ablation configuration, variants that remove the gold responses, remove the data look-back, or accept only teacher-preferred pairs score 6 to 10 LC points below the full procedure, whereas varying the number of on-policy samples per prompt (1 to 7) moves the LC win rate by at most 2.1 points, and a margin sweep (1 to 5) run in its own pipeline by at most 2.4 points. We also report the cost of the pipeline and where the practical algorithm departs from the theory it approximates. All results are single runs, and GPT-4o is both the teacher and the evaluation judge; we discuss what this implies for the reported gains.

Inverse kinematics (IK) converts end-effector pose commands into joint motion, and many vision-language-action (VLA) policies rely on it to act on a given arm and to transfer across embodiments. Precise IK remains laborious: redundancy and singularities complicate the inverse mapping, execution depends on hand-tuned controllers, and training data on physical robots are costly to collect. We present PolicyIK, a goal-conditioned reinforcement learning policy for high-precision IK. It updates joint-position references from pose feedback and observes its accumulated reference relative to the measured joints, so it can retain the offset that the position controller needs at rest. Two-scale pose errors with an error-dependent action gain resolve millimeter residuals while preserving large motions. Progress and dwell rewards teach it to both reach the tolerance and stay within it. In simulation, a single attempt by the trained PPO policy keeps the mean errors over the final second within 1 mm and 0.2° on 93.5% of held-out tasks, and a deployment protocol raises success to 98.9%. When trained directly on a physical arm with an off-policy RL learner, PolicyIK achieves higher reaching and holding success than all four classical IK controllers under the same time budgets. In simulated pick-and-place, PolicyIK executes the end-effector commands of the $π_{0.5}$ VLA policy with 95.7% success. These results show that reinforcement learning can provide high-precision inverse kinematics for robot arms. Code is available at https://github.com/Tinaliu0123/PolicyIK.

Dexterous manipulation with multi-fingered hands is the next frontier of robotics, yet learned hand skills remain limited to simple grasps or basic repeated motions, such as rotating an object. As robots attempt more demanding in-hand maneuvers, safety, such as not dropping the object, becomes critical, yet it is rarely measured. We study in-hand object pose reaching, a task that demands diverse and difficult grasps: moving an object to almost any position and orientation within reach of the fingers, at any wrist orientation, through long sequences of consecutive goals. We present a recipe for training such policies for a LEAP hand in simulation without human data, built on a range of insights, from diverse resets and goals via generated grasp datasets to an adaptive friction curriculum. With careful system identification, the policies transfer zero-shot to the real hand, using either motion capture or a single wrist-mounted depth camera, and prove remarkably capable and robust. On top of the task policy, we add a learned residual safety filter with adjustable conservativeness, letting us tune the balance between performance and safety and greatly reduce object drops. In 13.3 hours of real-robot evaluation over 4,800 unseen goals across 4 objects and diverse wrist orientations, the state-based policy reaches 95.2% of goals within 2 cm and 0.4 rad, and the filter cuts its drops by 75% while still reaching 91.5% of goals. The policies can also spin a lightbulb held in an arbitrary pose, reach out-of-distribution goals, withstand fast arm motion and perturbations, and, needing only a wrist camera, serve as portable skills such as screwing in a lightbulb. We release the full recipe as a platform for studying performance, reliability, and safety in high-dimensional dexterous systems. Existing robotic perception is constrained by sensors that are either robot-mounted or permanently fixed in the environment, locking perception to a limited set of viewpoints. Yet as robots perform increasingly diverse tasks, the most informative viewpoint shifts from one task to the next-often somewhere onboard sensor and static infrastructure can not readily satisfy. To address this gap, we propose SensorPerch, a novel realization of active perception that decouples sensing from both the robot embodiment and the environment by treating sensors as independent physical entities that the robot can autonomously detach and re-attach within the environment. SensorPerch presents one realization of this paradigm: a lightweight, wireless, reconfigurable sensor platform that can perch on diverse surfaces, paired with a viewpoint-selection framework that determines task-optimal sensor placements. Together, these enable robots to construct task-relevant viewpoints on demand, independent of the robot's current position and available fixed infrastructure. We demonstrate the paradigm on two task classes: (i) object-coupled perception, where SensorPerch enables persistent object-state detection beyond the robot's current position, achieving successful event detection even when the robot is not nearby; and (ii) policy-coupled perception, where SensorPerch allows robots to construct diverse, policy-specific viewpoints for various policies, achieving success rates comparable to those obtained using oracle viewpoints.

Imitation learning policies in robotics are trained on datasets collected through costly real-world teleoperation. Often, the data-collection process is unguided, relying on the teleoperator's intuition, resulting in data that contributes little to overall policy performance. Recent work has shown that curating such unguided datasets can substantially improve policy performance, but these approaches operate by filtering existing datasets after collection and therefore do not prevent the acquisition of uninformative data. In this work, we propose GUILD, a novel Guided Data Collection (GDC) method that actively reasons about which data should be collected to maximize downstream policy performance. We introduce an iterative framework that alternates between 1) task proposal and data collection and 2) data evaluation to close the loop. For task proposal, we leverage semantic priors from vision-language models to identify relevant environments, object configurations, and goals for data collection. However, since semantic relevance does not imply policy improvement, we perform data evaluation. By leveraging predictive data attribution we approximate how the collected trajectories influence policy performance on a target deployment setting. This signal is then used as feedback to guide subsequent data collection, closing the data collection loop. We evaluate our approach in simulation and real robot settings, demonstrating that guided data collection substantially improves sample efficiency and deployment performance compared to passive data collection strategies, multiple baselines and experienced roboticists. State-of-the-art vision-language-action (VLA) models such as pi0.5 exhibit strong semantic understanding, instruction following and task behavior. However, when deployed on new robots, even minor mismatches in hardware configuration relative to pretraining can cause severe performance drops. Finetuning the VLA on in-domain expert data from the new embodiment improves performance on the expert task but leads to a loss in its original instruction following and behavioral priors. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised method that generates online interaction rollouts from the zero-shot VLA as additional training data for finetuning. Our experiments show this yields strong multi-task manipulation policies on the target robot that (1) inherit pretrained tasks distilled from the zero-shot VLA without expert demos for them, (2) improve success and generalist instruction following beyond expert-only fine-tuning on expert-teleoperated tasks, and (3) mitigate forgetting of held-out tasks from the pretrained policy, not part of fine-tuning. We demonstrate the success of our approach across test sets probing generalization on a real ALOHA robot and a new simulation benchmark in RoboTwin. The Weisfeiler-Leman algorithms WL(k) for $k\ge1$ form a hierarchy of increasingly powerful tests for graph isomorphism. We study how the equivalence relations they induce on graphs transfer through a graph operation $Φ$: for a given $k$, what level of WL-equivalence between graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ guarantees WL(k)-equivalence of graphs $Φ(H_1)$ and $Φ(H_2)$? We call the least such level the transfer parameter $τ_Φ(k)$ and determine it exactly for the line graph operation $Φ= L$: $τ_L(k)=2k+1$ for $k\ge2$, while $τ_L(1)=1$. We also extend these results to the $(r,S)$-line graphs, which generalize the line graph from edges to $r$-cliques by connecting two cliques when their intersection size lies in a prescribed set $S$. For these operations we prove that $τ_{r,S}(1)=r-1$ for every $S$ and, for certain choices of $S$, that $τ_{r,S}(k)=rk+r-1$ for $k\ge r$, and we bound the transfer parameter in the remaining range. Our upper bounds on transfer parameters follow from a treewidth analysis of diagrammatic expansions of homomorphism counts into $Φ(H)$ as linear combinations of homomorphism counts into $H$. The matching lower bounds combine explicit constructions of witness graphs with the homomorphism-distinguishing closedness of graphs of bounded treewidth.

Reliable evaluation of visual 3D reconstruction and depth estimation in vegetation-rich outdoor environments is limited by the scarcity of geometric ground-truth data and the cost of complete scanner surveys. We present a LiDARbased reference-generation pipeline for evaluating the zero-shot performance of feed-forward visual-geometry models alongside conventional structure-from-motion (SfM) methods. The pipeline reuses camera images, LiDAR scans, and reference poses from existing multi-sensor localization datasets to generate per-view depth maps and visible reference point clouds. To address visibility errors in accumulated LiDAR scans, we introduce the LargeDepth-Gap Visibility Score (LDGVS) for point-wise visibility filtering and automatic scale selection in Hidden Point Removal(HPR). Experiments on TartanAirV2 and TartanGround show that, compared with Poisson surface reconstruction, which is an approach suited to completed scan surveys, the combined HPR and LDGVS filtering retains approximately three times the point density at comparable absolute relative error. We also apply the pipeline to the BotanicGarden dataset to systematically compare depth estimation and 3D reconstruction methods. Feedforward methods produce dense depth predictions efficiently, but their 3D reconstructions can contain duplicated structures. Conventional SfM generally produces more coherent geometry, but its reconstructions remain sparse and more prone to failure in challenging vegetated scenes. The benchmark toolkit and datasets will be released.
Almost-MMS allocations with small agent redundancy

For a fixed $ε\ge 0$, let $ρ_{ε, n}$ be the maximum value of $ρ_n$ such that, in every allocation instance with $m$ indivisible goods and $(1 + ε)n$ agents, there is a subset of $n$ agents with the following property. The allocation instance restricted to only this subset of $n$ agents has an allocation that gives each agent at least $ρ_n$-fraction of her $n$-maximin share (MMS). When $ε> 0$ we refer to $εn$ as the {\em agent redundancy}. The case $ε= 0$ is the standard setting without agent redundancy, and we use $ρ_{0,n}$ and $ρ_n$ interchangeably. For allocation instances with additive valuations, % agents, it is known that $\frac{7}{9} \le ρ_n < 1-Ω(\frac{1}{\log^2 n})$ for every $n \ge 2$ (with stronger lower bounds for small $n$). It is an open question whether $ρ_n$ tends to~1 as $n$ grows. We show that with agent redundancy, the answer to this question is positive. That is, for every $ε> 0$, $ρ_{ε, n}$ tends to~1 as $n$ grows. A straightforward corollary of this result is that for every $c > 0$, if the number of items satisfies $m \le (2 - c)n$, then the answer is positive also for $ρ_n$ (with no agent redundancy). Adapting our techniques to a related setting, we also improve a recent result of Ezra and Garbuz, and show that without agent redundancy, there always exists an allocation that gives $n - O(\log^2 n)$ agents their full MMS.

This paper presents GSCV++, a lightweight pipeline for 3D {G}aussian {S}platting (GS) sequences {C}ompression with standard {V}ideo codecs. To meet the requirements of low-complexity and hardware compatibility from the industry, GSCV++ jointly improves preprocessing, 3D-to-2D mapping, and practical video compression configuration of GS compression. First, for preprocessing, energy-adaptive inter-frame spherical harmonic (SH) alternative current (AC) dimensionality reduction (EA-SHDR) is proposed to produces a compact and stable temporal SH AC feature space. It can reduce the data volume of following mapping and practical compression, as well as less complexity while eliminating redundant information. Second, for 3D-to-2D mapping, prior-based Inter-MiniPLAS (P-MiniPLAS) is designed to generate smooth 2D feature maps through prior-based weighting factor inference and small scale remapping. Compared with vanilla Parallel Linear Assignment Sorting (PLAS) and Morton scan, P-MiniPLAS ensures the generated 2D maps are more suitable for the video codec while maintaining a low level of computational complexity. Third, for practical compression, content-aware generalized compression (CA-GC) is developed to use a non-uniform bit-depth split for coordinate map generation, and a coding unit size selection is introduced for efficient compression complexity control, which fully exploits the performance of video codecs without involving normative changes. Experiments demonstrate that GSCV++ reports over 20\% in intra- and 60\% in inter-prediction rate-distortion gains compared with state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. GSCV++ also achieves faster 2D map generation, encoding, and decoding than other SOTA methods using the same type of video codecs. Ablation studies verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed modules and provide insights for subsequent research.

Undesired model behaviors can emerge or re-emerge at any stage of training. Once observed, how effectively can we suppress them? To study this question, we first construct two model organisms--language models deliberately trained to exhibit a specific misalignment--that differ in what triggers the behavior. The narrow-trigger organism misbehaves only when the prompt contains a specific cue: it cheats on multiple-choice questions by following a planted hint that points to a wrong answer, and behaves normally otherwise. The broad-trigger organism has no such cue: after fine-tuning on insecure code, it gives harmful responses across a wide range of open-ended prompts. We then formalize post-hoc behavioral suppression and evaluate methods along three criteria: immediate suppression of the target behavior, durability under further training, and preservation of general capability. We compare standard methods--SFT, GRPO, and gradient-ascent unlearning--along these dimensions. Building on prior work on alignment shallowness, we hypothesize that more durable suppression requires the ability to recover from a wider range of misalignment states. We introduce Prefix-Expanded Adversarial Reinforcement Learning (PEARL), a GRPO variant that augments rollouts with continuations from intermediate states sampled along cached organism trajectories. Across both organism settings and two model families (Qwen3-4B, GPT-OSS-20B), PEARL achieves strong immediate suppression while preserving task accuracy, and remains durable under further fine-tuning on either the organism's data or unrelated data. It obtains the greatest benefit when the undesirable behavior is broad and cannot be addressed through targeted SFT. Together, our framework and method offer a step toward more durable post-hoc removal of undesired behaviors.

In the graph collision problem, the task is to decide whether a known graph on $n$ vertices contains an edge with both endpoints marked, given query access to the input bits specifying the marked vertices. We first refute the conjectured $Ω(n^{2/3})$ query lower bound with a bounded error quantum algorithm using $\widetilde O(n^{92/139})$ queries. We then refine this approach to obtain a $\widetilde O(n^{11/17})$ query algorithm. We also obtain a $\widetilde O((nq)^{11/17})$ query bound for all (partial) Boolean output functions with positive certificate complexity at most 2 and alphabet size $q$, contrasting a known $Ω(n^{2/3})$ lower bound for such problems with large alphabet sizes. We complement these algorithms with an $Ω(\sqrt{n\log n})$ quantum query lower bound for graph collision, exceeding the $O(\sqrt n)$ certificate complexity barrier for the positive adversary method.

When a language model answers, we can usually only estimate why. We build a transformer in which every step is a Born measurement - attention $|\langle q|k\rangle|^4$ normalised over each row, a measured product in place of the feed-forward nonlinearity, and a Born readout. With its denominators held at their values for the input, each class probability is a polynomial in the word amplitudes, so its integrated-gradient evidence is computed by a finite quadrature with no quadrature error: the words' contributions sum to the class probability above its no-information share, to $10^{-11}$ or better. On e-SNLI natural language inference, with about 98k parameters outside the embedding, the model reaches $76.98 \pm 0.17$% test accuracy, level with a softmax transformer of the same size ($76.62 \pm 0.36$%). Deleting the word its evidence ranks first changes the answer in 45% of test pairs, out of the 53% any single deletion can change, against 32% for the softmax model explained the same way and 40% by its attention x gradient. Attention can look more like the words annotators highlighted, yet accounts for the answer less well: deleting the word it ranks first changes the Born Transformer's answer in 32% of pairs. The same weights compile exactly to optoelectronic optics and to qubits, and a coherent attention layer becomes one circuit equal to the model (852 CNOTs on 23 qubits). On IBM's ibm_kingston, reading only the attention overlaps by Hadamard tests, the device gave the model's answers on two short test pairs and kept or changed them under deletion as the model does; the evidence itself did not yet survive the device, and we work out the shots and calibration that measuring it on hardware would need.

Post-training (via supervised fine-tuning) improves instruction-following, but often induces semantic mode collapse by biasing models toward low-entropy fine-tuning data at the expense of the high-entropy pretraining distribution. Crucially, we find this trade-off worsens with scale. To close this semantic diversity gap, we propose annotation-anchored training, a principled method that enables models to adopt the preference-following behaviors of post-training without sacrificing the inherent diversity of pretraining. Our approach is simple: we pretrain on documents paired with semantic annotations, inducing a rich annotation distribution that reflects the full breadth of pretraining data, and we preserve this distribution during post-training. This lets us sample diverse annotations at inference time and use them as anchors to guide generation, effectively transferring pretraining's semantic richness into post-trained models. We find that models trained with annotation-anchored training can attain $6 \times$ less diversity collapse than models trained with SFT, and improve with scale.

Automatic tools can now generate whole-brain MRI parcellations at cohort scale, but generated-label releases often provide little evidence about which cases are reliable enough to reuse. We introduce OpenBrain, a confidence-aware release of 35,838 provenance-verified OpenNeuro T1w cases from 607 source datasets. OpenBrain is organized as an auditable case-record release rather than a directory of standalone segmentation files: each record links a primary parcellation, two committee parcellations, source/license provenance, raw QC-7 measurements, percentile risks, a combined risk score R, and a confidence tier. QC-7 is a reference-free reliability panel over label geometry, image-label consistency, and committee disagreement, so users can filter, weight, audit, or re-threshold generated labels without rerunning inference. We evaluate this released evidence under a frozen protocol. Across external cohorts, lower QC-7 risk corresponds to higher generated-label quality; in fixed-budget training, lower-risk selections improve paired macro Dice over random selection by +3.2 to +3.7 percentage points. OpenBrain also exposes raw axes, committee outputs, provenance, and datasheet documentation, so confidence claims remain inspectable after download. It does not turn generated labels into manual annotations or clinical-grade segmentations. Its contribution is a large open generated-parcellation substrate, a reusable case-level risk-evidence layer, and an external validation protocol for release-time QC. Politically biased AI can shift users' opinions, yet it remains unclear whether model disclaimers protect against such persuasion. We report a preregistered experiment (N=1,586) examining how disclaimer design and user characteristics shape susceptibility to politically biased AI. We varied whether disclaimers identified political bias versus potential inaccuracies and whether they included an explanation. Participants completed two decision-making tasks with an LLM biased against their political views, with outcomes assessed immediately and one week later. Disclaimers identifying political bias and including an explanation reduced persuasion, but effects varied across contexts and did not persist. Individual differences were more consistent predictors: Republicans were more persuaded and reported higher trust than Democrats across tasks. Similarly, participants who used AI more frequently were also more persuaded, whereas those with greater self-reported AI knowledge were less persuaded. These findings suggest that generic disclaimers are not enough: effective safeguards must account for user heterogeneity and context.

Given a class of machine learning models and sample access to a data distribution with binary labels, which computational task is harder: training a discriminative model that distinguishes positive and negative labels as well as the best member of the class, or training a generative model whose outputs are indistinguishable from real data by all members of the class? We prove that these two fundamental tasks in computational learning theory are not just closely related, but actually equivalent to each other in complexity. One direction of this equivalence was previously known. Indeed, the powerful regularity lemma in complexity theory gives an efficient oracle reduction from the indistinguishability task (a.k.a. multiaccuracy) to the distinguishing task (a.k.a. agnostic learning) in the style of boosting algorithms. Our main contribution is an efficient oracle reduction in the other direction. Taking this idea further, we show that a multiaccuracy oracle is a remarkably powerful primitive, achieving not just agnostic learning but also a wide range of seemingly more demanding learning objectives via similarly efficient and direct constructions. Our results crucially use the power of making adaptive queries to the oracle, and stand in stark contrast to prior work, which showed that post-processing a single multiaccurate predictor is insufficient for even weak forms of learning. On a technical level, we draw a connection between our (offline) problem and a version of no-regret learning in the online setting, which allows us to use follow-the-leader type algorithms to modify the label distribution and aggregate the predictions of the multiaccuracy oracle.

Speculative decoding has been treated purely as a systems optimization that speeds up large language model decoding without changing the model behavior. Under this view, the growing effort to train better draft models has been focused solely on acceptance rate. We argue that this view does not hold true for long-horizon agent reasoning. Measuring frontier open-weight models on complex agentic tasks with different speculative decoding approaches, we found that numerical noise grows within verification windows, and the draft acceptance results of the thinking process can change the output distribution of the model after 30 steps, thus noticeably influencing the reasoning accuracy of long-horizon agents in random directions. In this work, we improve the reasoning capability of target models by controlling such noise. While we cannot change the overall token distribution verified by the target model, we can encode critical reasoning with highest precision by training the draft model to be rejected. We identify these points in agent traces and train the draft model to favor adversarial preference. At inference the trained draft and the target part ways precisely at these decision points, verification restarts, so that critical thinking tokens are sampled from the target model and encoded under its least noisy conditions. This approach makes critical reasoning better indexed and more durable over a long horizon. On complex agentic coding benchmarks, our approach raises end-to-end success rate with no change to the target model or its output distribution. Our results recast the speculative decoding mechanism from a pure accelerator into an active allocator for context precision that improves the accuracy of long-horizon agents by training 0.06% to 0.28% of hosted parameters.

Recently, sparse autoencoders (SAEs) have emerged as an attractive tool for interpreting and interacting with representations in practical neural networks. While it is common empirical folklore, we also show theoretically that SAEs are highly unstable: different training runs are likely to produce different concept dictionaries and sparse codes. We characterize the model properties that hinder the stability of real-world SAEs, and address each of these problems through minimal changes to the architecture and training procedure. Together, these changes yield two versions of an \textbf{i}dentifiable SAE (iSAE), a variant of the standard TopK SAE with lower reconstruction error and improved stability. We explain this improvement theoretically by connecting SAEs with traditional dictionary learning approaches, and show that the dictionaries learned in practice satisfy an approximate restricted isometry condition, rendering the corresponding sparse codes in those models near-identifiable.

In-context learning (ICL) lets a pretrained language model perform a task specified by demonstrations in its prompt, with no parameter updates. With arbitrary labels the model must acquire a mapping it cannot have memorized, so the learning happens within a single forward pass. Prior work found candidate parts but not how they compose. We give the composition for few-shot sentence classification with arbitrary labels in three 3-4B-parameter transformers. The model implements a key-value memory over label-token positions: each label token's residual stream encodes the label's identity, and middle-layer attention heads write into it the class of the preceding demonstration as its key. At the query, upper-layer heads match the query's class against the stored keys and copy out the matching labels. An early-layer signal encoding whether any label has repeated gates this readout; in its absence the readers attend to the start of the prompt and no label is favored. A separate set of heads suppresses the most recently seen label. Each step is established causally by activation patching, head ablations against random-head baselines, and steering with the model's own signals. A softmax model of the readout with two constants per head, fit on one prompt distribution, predicts another. The computation is conserved across the three models, the named heads alone reproduce the behaviour, and a transformer trained from scratch grows the same parts. The circuit transfers to semantic concepts and to labels with meaning, and the same parts, with a causal gate, appear from 0.6B to 8B in one family and survive instruction tuning. ICL in this setting is a gated associative lookup built from a few identifiable component types, traced causally from demonstrations to prediction.

Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) and its variants dominate Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning (MTRL) due to their off-policy sample efficiency, while on-policy methods such as Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) remain underexplored. We diagnose that PPO in MTRL suffers from a previously overlooked issue: critic-side gradient ill-conditioning, which may cause tail tasks to stall while easy tasks dominate the value function's updates. To address this, we propose TOPPO (Tail-Optimized PPO), a reformulation of PPO via Critic Balancing -- a set of modules that improve gradient conditioning and balance learning dynamics across tasks. Unlike prior approaches that rely on modular architectures or large models, TOPPO targets the optimization bottleneck within PPO itself. Empirically, on the Meta-World+ MT50 benchmark, TOPPO achieves stronger mean and tail-task performance than prior SAC-family and ARS-family methods while using substantially fewer parameters and reaching their final performance in fewer environment steps. Notably, TOPPO matches or surpasses strong SAC baselines early in training and maintains superior performance at full budget. Ablations confirm the effectiveness of each module in TOPPO and provide insights into their interactions. Our results demonstrate that, with proper optimization, on-policy methods can rival or exceed off-policy approaches in MTRL, challenging the prevailing reliance on SAC and highlighting critic-side gradient conditioning as the central bottleneck.
trajectory-judge: What Outcome-Only LLM Judges Miss on Agent Trajectories

A direct test of an LLM judge of agent trajectories injects faults into correct runs and reports recall, per fault type or by whether the fault broke the environment outcome (loud) or not (silent). Such recall can credit a judge with detection it does not have; paired discrimination, its flag rate on the faults minus its rate on the clean runs they came from, exposes this. Our testbed, a deterministic support desk with a scripted oracle and a one-step fault injector, labels all 400 trajectories exactly. A 14B judge shown only the request and final reply scores 34% to 76% recall on four fault types that leave the reply unchanged. There its input is the clean run's, so its paired discrimination is zero and that recall is its flag rate on clean runs. Splitting by outcome survival does not fix this: its loud recall of 84% is a paired +0.393 and its silent recall of 45% a paired +0.048, all from the two fault types that change the reply. Told to check each step, the same model flags every fault of those four types and 0 of 100 clean runs (95% CI up to 3.6%). It does not reliably check the reply: of four invented promises it flags one every time and the other three once in 42 faults. Shown every step but asked only about the reply, it still reaches a paired +0.69 on reply-unchanged faults, against +1.00 when told to check each step. We recommend reporting paired discrimination against clean parents, split by whether the fault reaches the judge's input and by outcome survival, and release the testbed, raw verdicts and analysis pipeline.
Weight-space programming for auditing clinical decision networks

Machine learning models in radiotherapy are commissioned by testing them on cases with known answers, which may not reveal a shortcut that the test cases share with the training data. Frontier language models have recently been reported to read and write the raw weights of small neural networks, an ability called weight-space programming. The purpose of this study was to determine whether such a model, given only a clinical protocol and a network's weights, can audit and repair the network. Networks with 433 to 4,801 parameters were trained to screen head-and-neck planning requests against four rules. Flaws were planted through the training data: confounds that hid each rule, a 3 Gy shift in the cord threshold, and a hidden trigger. Claude Opus 5.5 audited each network blind, without tools, data or code execution, and every claim and repair was tested on about 420,000 requests. The language model named the broken rule in 16 of 18 flawed networks (95% CI 67% to 97%), including all 15 with a confound or a threshold shift. It repaired each of the 16 by changing a median of 3 parameters. Fine-tuning on protocol-labeled requests also repaired every network, but changed nearly every parameter. Each confound and shift it found was visible in single units, and a simple statistic chosen for each flaw type found the same flaws. It cleared 2 of 5 healthy networks without being forced and found 1 of 3 triggers. Testing against the protocol detected every flaw, and black-box testing found the confounds and the shift faster. The results indicate that, in small networks, weight-space programming can locate and repair flaws that silence an input or shift a threshold, but cannot yet certify that a network is correct.
MedPhysBench: A Benchmark for Evaluating Language Models on Medical Physics Calculations and Error Detection

Medical physicists turn a prescription into a delivered dose and check one another's calculations, because one error in a beam calibration or a monitor-unit (MU) calculation can affect every patient treated with it. MedPhysBench has ten seeded generators of calculation items in radiation therapy, diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine and radiation protection, up to clinical tasks such as a TG-51 calibration worksheet. Reference answers come from code implementing the governing protocols, and a grader converts units and applies tolerance bands. From the same inputs, separate checking items test error detection, showing a colleague's worksheet or only the colleague's result, half correct and half with one planted error. On a held-out test split of 1,200 items (half for two models), 12 models scored 33.3 to 100.0% on calculation. Of the nine answers graded incorrect for the four best (99.3-100.0%), five contained model errors and four followed NCRP Report 151 on points our items misstate or leave open. Below them, most models did worst on level-3 clinical tasks, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 omitted the inverse-square correction in 19 of 20 isocentric MU items. Five models detected at least 96.7% of mostly large planted errors with at most 4% false alarms; for four of the other seven, checking only the result raised false alarms significantly. In an exploratory targeted test with 20 public cases of an omitted inverse-square correction, the three best models tested caught it in every worksheet, and three weaker models accepted 16 to 18 of 20 planted worksheets, one of them while applying the correction in most of its own calculations. Claude Opus 5.5 accepted 6 of 20 wrong results, although it applied the correction in all 20 of its own. We report the effect of two problems in our shielding items, found after the runs, and release the code, per-item outcomes and targeted-test responses.
