LionMuon: Alternating Spectral and Sign Descent for Efficient Training

Arman Bolatov, Artem Riabinin, Nikita Kornilov, Andrey Veprikov, Samuel Horváth, Martin Takáč, Aleksandr Beznosikov

Muon's spectral step gives a stronger direction than a sign step, but it is expensive. Every step runs Newton-Schulz iterations on the full matrix and, in distributed training, an extra all-reduce. Sign steps, as in Lion and Signum, are cheap and stay local to each device. We propose LionMuon, which takes one Muon step every P iterations and Lion steps in between, with a single dual-EMA momentum buffer shared by both. Muon's compute and communication are paid once per P steps, and the optimizer state is one buffer per matrix, half of AdamW's. A single-EMA variant, SignMuon, isolates the effect of alternation. We prove complexity bounds under heavy-tailed noise in which the period interpolates between the smoothness and noise constants of Muon and Lion, and which state, through measurable ratios of these constants, when LionMuon's complexity is below Muon's. On 124M and 355M models trained on FineWeb, LionMuon with P=2 and P=5 reaches a lower loss than Muon, AdamW, Lion and Signum at the same number of tokens. Under 4-GPU data-parallel training LionMuon reaches Muon's final loss with up to 30% less wall-clock on PCIe, and it beats the communication-efficient Muon variants Dion and MuonBP on loss at no more exposed communication, while keeping the exact gradient. SimplexLoRA: Dynamic Rank Updating via Alternating Minimization with Simplex Projection

Igor Shalygin, Grigorii Davydenko, Andrey Veprikov, Aleksey Antonov, Nikolay Bushkov, Stanislav Moiseev, Aleksandr Beznosikov

The success of large language models in real-world applications relies on parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods such as Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), which inserts compact, trainable adapters into selected layers. In this paper, we propose SimplexLoRA, a LoRA variant that adaptively adjusts adapter ranks during fine-tuning based on their learned importance. Unlike standard LoRA, which employs a fixed rank across all layers, SimplexLoRA optimizes per-adapter importance weights on the $n$-scaled simplex during a short warm-up and then freezes them, dynamically allocating capacity where it is most beneficial without increasing the overall parameter budget or inference cost. We evaluate SimplexLoRA across 12 language understanding, summarization, and reasoning tasks using DeBERTaV3, BART-large, Llama 3.1 8B, and Qwen3-8B. Our results show that SimplexLoRA consistently matches or outperforms standard LoRA and recent adaptive baselines, with the largest gains at low ranks. Our code is available at https://github.com/brain-lab-research/SimplexLoRA.

WeightLoRA: Keep Only Necessary Adapters

Andrey Veprikov Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Vladimir Solodkin Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Zyl Alexander, Andrey Savchenko HSE University, Aleksandr Beznosikov Moscow Independent Research Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Basic Research of Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (BRAIn Lab) and Innopolis University

The widespread utilization of language models in modern applications is inconceivable without Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning techniques, such as low-rank adaptation (LoRA), which adds trainable adapters to selected layers. Although LoRA may obtain accurate solutions, it requires significant memory to train large models and intuition on which layers to add adapters. In this paper, we propose a novel method, WeightLoRA, which overcomes this issue by adaptive selection of the most critical LoRA heads throughout the optimization process. As a result, we can significantly reduce the number of trainable parameters while maintaining the capability to obtain consistent or even superior metric values. We conduct experiments for a series of competitive benchmarks and DeBERTa, BART, Llama and Qwen models, comparing our method with different adaptive approaches. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of WeightLoRA and the superior performance of WeightLoRA+ in almost all cases.
