Large Language Models for Multi-Lingual Equivalent Mutant Detection: An Extended Empirical Study

Honglin Shu, Zhao Tian, Dong Wang, Junji Yu, Jiazhe Zhang, Xuejie Cao, Junjie Chen, Yasutaka Kamei

原文摘要

Mutation testing is a powerful technique for ensuring software quality. However, the presence of equivalent mutants introduces unnecessary costs and biases, limiting its practical effectiveness. Although numerous equivalent mutant detection (EMD) methods have been proposed, they often face distinct challenges: pure-code analysis methods can be limited by their reliance on specific compiler infrastructures, while existing machine-learning approaches remain constrained by scarce training data and limited generalization to unseen mutants. Large language models (LLMs) have recently demonstrated remarkable performance across diverse code-related tasks by better capturing program semantics. Yet their potential for EMD remains largely unexplored, particularly in the multi-lingual context. This paper presents the first comprehensive empirical study on LLMs for EMD, using 3,302 Java and 1,088 C mutant pairs to benchmark against state-of-the-art methods, explore strategy variations, assess efficiency, and evaluate cross-lingual generalization. Experimental results show that LLM-based approaches achieve higher F1-scores than the evaluated traditional methods, with fine-tuned code embedding yielding the highest detection accuracy among the tested strategies. Moreover, LLM-based approaches strike a practical balance between effectiveness and efficiency with inference times comparable to existing machine-learning models. Importantly, fine-tuned LLMs demonstrate measurable generalization across programming languages. These findings establish LLMs as a viable and efficient approach for tackling the longstanding challenge of equivalent mutant detection, offering new directions for advancing mutation testing in practice.

CoRD: Coupled Rollouts Fill the Blind Spot of On-Policy Distillation

原文摘要

On-policy distillation trains a student on its own rollouts, so states the teacher would reach but the student does not are seldom supervised. We introduce CoRD (coupled-rollout distillation), which keeps the on-policy loss and moves only the distribution of training states toward the teacher, drawing rollouts from a geometric interpolation of student and teacher through the maximal coupling of speculative decoding. The coupling keeps the student's token wherever the two distributions agree and otherwise substitutes a token from the part of the target the student underweights, so interventions are as rare as any exact sampler allows and recede as the student learns. Across six base students from two model families (Qwen3 and Qwen3.5, 0.6B to 4B), CoRD raises average pass@1 over on-policy distillation by 0.9 to 2.0 points and pass@8 by 1.2 to 3.4 points on five public math benchmarks at equal steps and data. On frozen teacher-reached states, a 4B student trained with CoRD reaches in 16 steps a gap closure that on-policy distillation does not reach in 80, and substitution rules intervening at least as often in other directions fall short of CoRD.

TwinBridge: Digital Twin-Driven Policy and Reward Transfer for Real-World Reinforcement Learning in Laboratory Robotics

原文摘要

Online reinforcement learning offers an effective approach to precise laboratory manipulation, yet costly real-world demonstrations and limited access to dense process rewards hinder its practical application. We present TwinBridge, a digital twin-driven framework that supplies policy initialization and dense visual rewards for real-world online learning. We construct digital twins by combining 3D Gaussian splatting with physics simulation. Here, simulator states provide task events and geometric progress under physical prerequisites and ordering constraints, yielding rewards for policy pretraining with simulated demonstrations and reinforcement learning. We distill this supervision into a visual reward model. During real-world interaction, its predictions are combined with execution history to compute dense rewards for human-in-the-loop policy refinement. Across five real-world laboratory tasks, TwinBridge achieves a final mean autonomous success rate of 98% with at most 25 minutes of real-world interaction per task. Experiments show that dense rewards improve interaction efficiency over sparse rewards, and simulation-based policy initialization further accelerates learning.

The Platonic brain bridge hypothesis: brain networks as architectural priors for multimodal large language models

Pengfei Zhang, Biao Tian, Xiangang Li, Hui Xiong, Li Liu

原文摘要

Multimodal large language models predict brain activity, but brain alignment has been a measurement, not a design tool. We propose the Platonic brain bridge hypothesis: omni models, multimodal large language models that process video, audio and text jointly, converge on brain-like representations usable in both directions. From model to brain, brain-likeness of seven omni models is stable across participants, rises with every input channel in three bases, and our encoders lead the Algonauts 2025 out-of-distribution leaderboard. From brain to model, Brain-MoE fixes the expert partition of a frozen base to the seven networks of human cortex, trains experts on network-labelled Brain-AVQA questions, raises held-out accuracy in all 15 model-benchmark pairs by 6.42 percentage points on average and exceeds capacity-matched random experts in 14. Brain-Scope localizes the correspondence to sparse features whose removal weakens brain prediction. Human brain organization is therefore a usable architectural prior for multimodal large language models.

原文摘要

Humans naturally possess the spatial reasoning ability to form and manipulate images and structures of objects in space. There is an increasing effort to endow Vision-Language Models (VLMs) with similar spatial reasoning capabilities. However, it remains unclear whether these models truly understand and manipulate spatial objects or not. To address this question, we propose a new evaluation framework aimed at assessing the performance of VLMs in spatial deformation reasoning tasks. Specifically, we construct a benchmark for spatial deformation reasoning from 2D to 3D. We explore whether the model can effectively perform spatial deformation reasoning from two directions: forward reasoning (given the operations, find the final state) and reverse reasoning (given the final state, determine the operations). We adopt a ladder competition format, using the number of deformation steps as the level classification criterion, with the goal of exploring the boundaries of the model’s deformation reasoning capabilities. Interestingly, the benchmarking results reveal that almost no model demonstrates plausible spatial deformation reasoning abilities. Furthermore, even after applying targeted training and mainstream reasoning enhancement methods, the models are still unable to perform well on 3D spatial deformation reasoning.

原文摘要

While Large Language Models (LLMs) have excelled in textual reasoning, they struggle with mathematical domains like geometry that intrinsically rely on visual aids. Existing approaches to Visual Chain-of-Thought (VCoT) are often limited by rigid external tools or fail to generate the high-fidelity, strategically-timed diagrams necessary for complex problem-solving. To bridge this gap, we introduce MathCanvas, a comprehensive framework designed to endow unified Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) with intrinsic VCoT capabilities for mathematics. Our approach consists of two phases. First, a Visual Manipulation stage pre-trains the model on a novel 15.2M-pair corpus, comprising 10M caption-to-diagram pairs (MathCanvas-Imagen) and 5.2M step-by-step editing trajectories (MathCanvas-Edit), to master diagram generation and editing. Second, a Strategic Visual-Aided Reasoning stage fine-tunes the model on MathCanvas-Instruct, a new 219K-example dataset of interleaved visual-textual reasoning paths, teaching it when and how to leverage visual aids. To facilitate rigorous evaluation, we introduce MathCanvas-Bench, a challenging benchmark with 3K problems that require models to produce interleaved visual-textual solutions. Our model, BAGEL-Canvas, trained under this framework, achieves an 86% relative improvement over strong LMM baselines on MathCanvas-Bench, demonstrating excellent generalization to other public math benchmarks. Our work provides a complete toolkit—framework, datasets, and benchmark—to unlock complex, human-like visual reasoning in LMMs.

原文摘要

Cross-lingual chain-of-thought (XCoT) with self-consistency markedly enhances multilingual reasoning, yet existing methods remain costly due to extensive sampling of full trajectories across languages. Moreover, multilingual LLM representations vary strongly by language, hindering direct feature comparisons and effective pruning. To address this, we introduce UL-XCoT, the first efficient unified logic cross-lingual reasoning framework that minimizes redundancy in token usage and latency, yielding the greatest efficiency under limited sampling budgets during inference. Specifically, UL-XCoT (1) achieves less languages by selecting, per query, a small candidate language set in a language-invariant unified logic space, (2) enables less tokens by monitoring logic-space trajectory dynamics during decoding to prune low-quality reasoning paths, and (3) aggregates the remaining high-quality trajectories via voting. Experiments on PolyMath across 18 languages with DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B demonstrate that UL-XCoT achieves competitive accuracy while sharply cutting over 50% decoding token cost and latency versus prior sampling baselines. It also delivers more stable gains on low-resource languages, underscoring consistently superior robustness where standard XCoT self-consistency method fails.

Controllable Memory Usage: Balancing Anchoring and Innovation in Long-Term Human–Agent Interaction

原文摘要

As LLM-based agents are increasingly used in long-term interactions, cumulative memory is critical for enabling personalization and maintaining stylistic consistency. However, most existing systems adopt an “all-or-nothing” approach to memory usage: incorporating all relevant past information can lead to Memory Anchoring, where the agent is trapped by past interactions, while excluding memory entirely results in under-utilization and the loss of important interaction history. We show that an agent’s reliance on memory can be modeled as an explicit and user-controllable dimension. We first introduce a behavioral metric of memory dependence to quantify the influence of past interactions on current outputs. We then propose Steerable Memory Agent, SteeM, a framework that allows users to dynamically regulate memory reliance, ranging from a fresh-start mode that promotes innovation to a high-fidelity mode that closely follows interaction history. Experiments across different scenarios demonstrate that our approach consistently outperforms conventional prompting and rigid memory masking strategies, yielding a more nuanced and effective control for personalized human-agent collaboration.
