Describe Your Facial Expressions by Linking Image Encoders and Large Language Models

Yujian Yuan, Jiabei Zeng, Shiguang Shan

原文摘要

This paper presents a novel task of describing human facial expressions of a facial image in natural language, which captures the nuances of facial actions and emotional states beyond traditional emotion categories or facial action units (AUs). To achieve the facial expression captioning model, we propose a three-stage training framework that trains a vision-to-language model using synthesized image-text pairs and the BLIP-2 pre-training techniques. To overcome the challenge of missing training image-text pairs for facial expression captioning, we propose a strategy that involves synthesizing and combining captions using GPT-3.5 and existing annotations on either emotion categories or AUs. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in generating captions that describe details of facial actions and emotions, as well as the inferential relationship between them, even when those emotions are not present in the training data. It is also demonstrated that the vision-to-language task enhances the performance of the intermediate visual features on both AU detection and emotion classification tasks.

Generator-Aligned Reward Modeling with Target-Aware Bounded Optimization for Visual Generation

Ziqiao Weng, Yuanzhi Liang, Haibing Huang, Weidong Cai, Xuelong Li

原文摘要

Post-training aims to enhance desired attributes in visual generative models while preserving their general generation capabilities. Reward-guided post-training faces two challenges: real training data may mismatch the generator's output distribution, and attribute supervision may be confounded by unrelated content. Unbounded reward maximization can also cause overoptimization and degrade generation quality. We propose a framework combining Generator-Aligned Reward Modeling (GARM) and Target-Aware Bounded Optimization (TABO). GARM mitigates distribution mismatch through generator-support matching and reduces content confounding using content-matched real contrasts, yielding generator-relevant, attribute-focused reward supervision. TABO maps the learned reward to a smooth, upper-bounded function calibrated from real target-positive examples. This transformation is independent of the optimization algorithm and supports both direct reward-gradient and policy-based optimization. We further introduce Target-Aware GRPO (TA-GRPO), an adaptation of Flow-GRPO that combines fixed stage-wise advantage scaling, a generator-to-target curriculum, and timestep-balanced credit assignment for flow-based video optimization. Experiments show that GARM improves target-attribute expression while maintaining competitive generation quality. TABO better balances attribute enhancement and visual quality than unconstrained reward maximization, while TA-GRPO improves target enhancement over vanilla Flow-GRPO and reduces unintended attribute leakage on neutral prompts. These results highlight the importance of generator-aligned reward supervision and controlled, data-calibrated optimization for targeted visual generation.

Spectral symmetry fingerprints in equivariant representations

Jiacheng Cen, Anyi Li, Ning Lin, Zihe Wang, Ji-Rong Wen, Wenbing Huang

原文摘要

Symmetry governs the organization of physical structures, while symmetry breaking reveals their transformations. In geometric deep learning, symmetry imposes rank constraints on equivariant representations, limiting the expressive capacity of equivariant graph neural networks (GNNs). Here we show that these constraints can instead be exploited: the singular-value spectra of equivariant representations provide a unified fingerprint of structural symmetry. We introduce spectral symmetry fingerprints (SymFP), which enable discrete point-group identification through rank-template matching and continuous symmetry analysis by quantifying spectral energy beyond target rank constraints. SymFP is orientation invariant and architecture agnostic, enabling a parameter-free GNN implementation. Its spectra can be reused across multiple target groups, and the resulting leakage scores satisfy subgroup monotonicity. Across synthetic structures, molecules, coordination complexes and large biological assemblies, SymFP accurately identifies point groups, tracks controlled symmetry breaking and reveals local and degree-resolved symmetry changes that can be obscured by global geometric measures. These results establish the spectral structure of equivariant representations as a general framework for characterizing symmetry across physical systems.

Taurus: LLM-in-the-Loop CT Annotation Matches Coding Agents at Half the Cost

Bing Hu, Rishabh Sharma

原文摘要

Dense labels of the aorta in CT are slow to draw, and the public aortic CT datasets that could stand in for them each label different structures under their own conventions. Large language model (LLM) agents can now write code and read images. We asked whether such a model labels these scans better as a free-form agent that writes its own segmentation code, or inside a harness, where an automated pass labels the scan and the model reviews the result. We built a harness, Taurus, and compared it with free-form agents by blind label recovery: we withheld the human labels of six public datasets (939 volumes) and scored every approach against each dataset's own classes. In the first version of Taurus, the model's review raised the primary metric on only two of six datasets, by less than the noise between two reviews of the same case. A free-form agent running Claude Opus 5.5 scored higher on most datasets. Moving what the free-form agents did well into the automated pass then carried most of the gain on 38 held-out cases. The final version smooths the label surfaces with a fixed rule and checks for the large errors the automated pass tends to make, such as an aneurysm drawn to half its size. Each check that fires puts a multiple-choice question to the model, with candidate corrections drawn on the scan. It matched the surface smoothness of the human references, and in the primary metric we found no difference from the free-form Opus agent, at under half its cost, $1.22 against $2.71 per case. Most of what made Taurus competitive came from the harness and its automation rather than from the language model itself. Taurus shows that this kind of annotation can be automated, so that expert time can move from drawing labels to checking them.

原文摘要

Accurate preoperative prediction of lung adenocarcinoma invasiveness is important for surgical planning and individualized treatment. However, overlapping CT appearances make it challenging to distinguish invasive adenocarcinoma (IAD) from Pre-IAD lesions. We propose a multimodal prompt-learning framework with dual-granularity image-text alignment for 3D CT-based IAD classification. A 3D ResNet-CBAM encoder extracts global and spatial visual features. A frozen RadBERT backbone is adapted with separate learnable prompts for report-level and keyword-level text encoding. These prompts are initialized using semantic representations derived from real-world clinical reports. Global contrastive alignment connects whole-volume CT representations with reports generated from clinician-annotated radiological attributes to provide overall semantic supervision. A multiple instance learning-based local alignment module associates spatial CT features with vascular-focused radiological keywords, to capture local imaging characteristics potentially associated with tumor invasion. The framework jointly optimizes classification and alignment objectives, while inference requires only CT images. Experiments included 1,593 pathologically confirmed nodules. On the test set, the proposed method achieved an accuracy of 87.92%, F1-score of 87.78%, and AUC of 0.9499. Its AUC significantly exceeded that of the image-only Res-CBAM baseline with the same visual backbone (0.9297; DeLong test, p = 0.0078). Ablation analyses supported the complementary contributions of global and local alignment and the benefit of report-based prompt initialization. Qualitative visualizations showed activation within nodules and adjacent vascular structures. These findings suggest that dual-granularity radiological supervision can enhance CT-based invasiveness prediction while preserving a CT-only inference workflow.

GDBack: A Group-Delay Backdoor Attack on Speaker Identification via Analytic All-Pass Filtering

Bicheng Xiong, Tao Li, Chenhui Cui, Zedong Xing, Qien Li, Weiping Wen, Rubing Huang, Tsong Yueh Chen

原文摘要

Existing phase-based backdoor attacks on speaker identification rely on shared absolute phase patterns for cross-sample trigger consistency, while other audio backdoor attacks have explored shared transformations that produce input-dependent triggers. Whether phase-based triggers can achieve similar consistency without imposing identical output phase patterns remains unclear. We propose GDBack, a poison-only group-delay backdoor attack using cascaded second-order analytic all-pass filters. Applying a shared transformation across utterances ideally preserves spectral magnitude while introducing a consistent frequency-dependent phase response and group-delay contribution, without forcing identical output phases. Experiments on LibriSpeech and VoxCeleb1 with ECAPA-TDNN, x-vector, and RawNet3 achieve attack success rates above 94% across all six settings (97.00% on average), while maintaining benign accuracy close to clean models. Phase and magnitude interventions, inverse compensation, and parameter-sensitivity analyses support the role of the induced phase transformation in backdoor activation. Speech quality and content evaluations indicate limited perceptual and linguistic distortion, while robustness experiments, including real over-the-air tests, reveal varying effectiveness across conditions and architectures. These findings demonstrate that cross-sample trigger consistency can arise from a shared phase transformation without requiring a common absolute phase pattern.

The classic duck-rabbit illusion reveals a fundamental property of perception: when visual evidence is ambiguous, a visual system must resolve competing interpretations. But do humans and machine classifiers resolve the same ambiguity in the same way? To explore this, we use semantically ambiguous images as probes of human-machine perceptual alignment. Our psychophysically-informed framework interpolates between concepts in vision-language embedding space to generate continuous spectra of ambiguous images, enabling direct comparison of human and machine perceptual decision boundaries and sensitivities. We find systematic differences in these boundaries: machine classifiers are shifted relative to both human observers and the midpoint of the synthesis continuum. Guidance scale affects both bias and sensitivity in humans and the machine classifiers tested. Controlled semantic ambiguity in generated images, combined with a psychophysical framework, can thus enable quantitative evaluation of human-machine perceptual alignment.

原文摘要

Missing project context can prevent build-dependent analyzers from constructing program relations required for vulnerability detection, while neural predictions alone do not establish auditable derivations. We present SymLift, a compile-free framework centered on Vulnerability-Oriented Neural Semantic Lifting for context-incomplete code fragments. A fine-tuned large language model reconstructs vulnerability-relevant control-flow, data-flow, memory, and resource relations in a constrained LLVM-like intermediate representation (IR), without reconstructing the full project context or directly predicting vulnerability labels. A deterministic parser validates the IR and maps its supported operations and relations into normalized evidence facts. Explicit Datalog rules derive findings with supporting facts and derivation traces, ensuring deterministic reasoning for fixed facts and rules. We evaluate SymLift on FormAI, Juliet, and MegaVul. Reducing complete Juliet programs to function-level fragments lowers Clang compilation success from 100% to 12.00%, whereas SymLift's analysis completion rate decreases by only 1.17 percentage points. After task-specific fine-tuning, the lifter achieves a control-flow intersection over union (IoU) of 96.85% on FormAI. SymLift-Qwen-7B achieves a Target-F1 of 94.41% on FormAI and, across six vulnerability families on MegaVul, a micro-averaged precision of 98.24% and a micro-averaged Target-F1 of 91.66%. These results support accurate and auditable detection in the evaluated context-incomplete settings, even with partial program relations.

HumanVBench: Probing Human-Centric Video Understanding in MLLMs with Automatically Synthesized Benchmarks

Zhou, Ting, Chen, Daoyuan, Jiao, Qirui, Ding, Bolin, Li, Yaliang, Shen, Ying

原文摘要

Evaluating the nuanced human-centric video understanding capabilities of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) remains a great challenge, as existing benchmarks often overlook the intricacies of emotion, behavior, and cross-modal alignment. We introduce HumanVBench, a comprehensive video benchmark designed to rigorously probe these capabilities across 16 fine-grained tasks. A cornerstone of our work is a novel and scalable benchmark construction methodology, featuring two automated pipelines that synthesize high-quality video annotations and challenging multiple-choice questions with minimal human labor. By leveraging state-of-the-art models for annotation and systematically converting model-induced errors into plausible distractors, our framework provides a generalizable "machine" for creating nuanced evaluation suites. Our extensive evaluation of 30 leading MLLMs on HumanVBench reveals critical deficiencies, particularly in perceiving subtle emotions and aligning speech with visual cues, with even top proprietary models falling short of human performance. We open-source HumanVBench and our synthesis pipelines to catalyze the development of more socially intelligent and capable video MLLMs.
