More Is Better? Exploring Latent Correspondence in Federated Hypergraph Learning

Bo Yan, Siming Zhang, Siqi Li, Hang Yu

Federated hypergraph learning with latent cross-client hyperedge correspondence poses fundamental identifiability and computational challenges, as the same local release can correspond to multiple global hypergraph structures. We characterize the tractability of recovering these latent correspondences, showing tractable pairwise assignment but generally intractable multi-client hyperedge matching. Building on this characterization, we derive a cross-entropy decomposition that reveals when local prediction can outperform predictors fitted with additional cross-client information. Motivated by this principle, we introduce Federated Adaptive Spectral Training with Representation Alignment (FedASTRA), which learns correspondence-invariant diffusion representations through adaptive heat diffusion and masked latent prediction while communicating model parameters only. We establish its asymptotic optimality with respect to the permitted local information and prove global population-risk convergence under explicit conditions on recovery, representation, and update alignment. Experiments on eight real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of FedASTRA against identifier-free federated graph and hypergraph methods. On ogbn-papers100M, FedASTRA reaches the performance-communication Pareto frontier, achieving 50.07 Accuracy and 29.73 Macro-F1 while communicating only 59.60 MiB per round.

Neural Compression of Long ADMM Trajectory for Multiparametric Quadratic Program

Liang Wu, Honghui Zheng, Bo Yang, Xu Yang, Yilin Mo, Ján Drgoňa

Solving large-scale multiparametric quadratic programs (mpQPs) in real time often requires thousands of iterative optimization updates, creating a major computational bottleneck in model predictive control and learning-enabled systems. This paper proposes TQPNet, a self-supervised neural compression framework that learns to compress long ADMM optimization trajectories into a compact neural warm start followed by a few refinement iterations. We derive a low-dimensional ADMM scheme operating on the primal-dual variables $(x,β)$ and show that its iteration admits an equivalent ReLU-layer representation, termed ADMM(ReLU). Building on this insight, TQPNet combines a multilayer perceptron with ReLU activations (MLP(ReLU)) and a small number of unrolled ADMM(ReLU) refinement layers. The network is trained offline using an optimality-condition-informed residual loss, eliminating the need for solver-generated labels. The proposed residual-based framework enables both self-supervised training and online solution certification through adaptive ADMM(ReLU) refinement. Experiments on large-scale mpQPs and real-time MPC applications demonstrate that TQPNet achieves high accuracy, strong generalization, and substantially faster inference than conventional optimization-based methods.

PerceptRL: Making Visual Perception Rewardable in MLLMs from Answers to Interactions

Tongkun Guan, Zhibo Yang, Mingkun Yang, Haocheng Wang, Wei Shen, Xiaokang Yang

Fine-grained visual perception remains a bottleneck during post-training of multimodal large language models (MLLMs), as perceptual errors can constrain gains from reasoning-focused optimization. Although image-caption pre-training improves perception, its influence can weaken as subsequent stages change data mixtures and objectives. Continuing caption supervision during post-training is challenging because subjective, information-dense descriptions complicate verifiable reward design. We present PerceptRL, which strengthens perception at two complementary levels. Perception RL uses a multi-agent pipeline to extract verified errors from dense image captions and convert the corresponding visual facts into QA pairs with fixed answer labels and rule-based rewards. Chain QA links correlated errors, while multiple-choice QA combines unrelated errors. A specialized route targets high-error domains with tailored verification, and a domain-agnostic general route covers errors beyond these domains. Perception Agentic RL addresses fine-grained and dense cases unresolved by single-turn Perception RL through multi-turn inspection with visual tools. We observe coordinate drift even in models trained to use tools, where incorrect crops or annotations distort evidence and propagate errors. Coordinate Injection corrects spatial operations in cold-start trajectories, while a grounding-aware process reward supervises intermediate spatial fidelity alongside final-answer correctness. Training proceeds through shared cold-start SFT, single-turn Perception RL, and multi-turn Perception Agentic RL. Across seven benchmarks under a shared tool-use protocol, PerceptRL achieves 71.6% average accuracy, surpassing the base model with the same tools and the strongest evaluated frontier VLM by 15.7 and 5.2 percentage points, respectively.

Guided-RLVR: Guided Exploration in Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards

Bo Yang, Zishuai Zhang, Weihua Li, Qinnan Zhang, Sijia Wen, Hainan Zhang

Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) has shown strong empirical gains in improving the reasoning ability of large language models (LLMs) on tasks such as mathematics and programming. However, recent studies have shown that RLVR rollouts often collapse onto a narrow set of reasoning trajectories, limiting the explored reasoning space. Motivated by findings that thinking tokens at critical steps serve as critical structural elements in LLM reasoning pathways, we propose Guided-RLVR, a novel approach that augments RLVR with a lightweight controller. The controller strategically injects semantically meaningful steering tokens into the sampling distribution, encouraging the model to approach problems from multiple reasoning perspectives and thereby expanding the exploration space. Experiments on mathematical reasoning and code generation benchmarks show that Guided-RLVR consistently outperforms existing RLVR methods while producing more diverse reasoning trajectories.

MedConstBench: Benchmarking How Constitutions Steer LLMs in Medical Ethics

Yibo Yang, Zerui Huang, Haomiao Yang, Zixia Wang

As large language models advance rapidly, they are increasingly used to answer medical questions, and many such models are now deployed locally. Once a model is deployed, its behavior is governed mainly by the ethical policy written into its constitution. However, most existing work focuses on factual correctness rather than the trade-off between competing ethical values. Even benchmarks that do evaluate ethics treat it as a fixed property of the model rather than as a variable, so how a constitution reshapes medical-ethics behavior remains largely unexplored. We introduce MedConstBench, a medical-ethics benchmark that treats the deployment constitution as a controlled variable, is organized around Beauchamp's four principles, and is scored by human-calibrated multi-model peer review. It includes MedDilemma, our own dataset of clinical dilemmas, and supports a systematic analysis of how constitutions steer LLMs. Evaluating ten open-source LLMs under four constitutions, we find that the effect of a constitution is dimension-selective and model-dependent, and that no constitution is universally optimal. Motivated by these findings, we propose a do-no-harm adaptive selector that chooses a constitution per model, matching the per-model oracle while guaranteeing a worst-case floor and generalizing to unseen models at low cost.

TokenMinds: Pretrained User Tokens and Embeddings for User Understanding in Large Recommender Systems

Qingyun Liu, Bo Yan, Yang Liu, Yuji Roh, Ekansh Sharma, Likang Yin, Emma Olowo, Yuxuan Li 等 19 位作者

User modeling in industrial recommender systems typically produces dense embeddings, which suffer from representational constraints due to fixed-dimensional vectors. As an emerging alternative for discrete user representation, LLM-generated natural-language user profiles often capture language semantics rather than sequential patterns in user behaviors. Meanwhile, Semantic ID (SID) is effective for item representation, yet existing discrete user representations remain largely confined to quantizing already-pooled user vectors, clustering historical watches, or predicting coarse topic clusters solely for candidate retrieval. We propose TokenMinds, an industrial system that extends the PLUM framework from SID-based item retrieval to generative sequential user modeling. Built on an encoder-decoder architecture adapted from pretrained LLMs, TokenMinds introduces a dual-output design: the encoder outputs a dense user embedding capturing a holistic user state, while the decoder generates discrete SID-based user tokens representing multi-faceted future interests. Grounded in item semantics, these tokens preserve distinct interests that a single pooled vector would average away. Additionally, a shared SID vocabulary across long- and short-form videos unifies cross-scenario behaviors into a single model, cutting upstream training and serving compute by 50% and 31%. Furthermore, leveraging the text vocabulary inherited from the pretrained LLM, TokenMinds interleaves textual search queries directly with watch histories to capture explicit user intent. We validate TokenMinds through offline evaluations and live A/B experiments across YouTube's primary ranking surfaces, serving billions of users asynchronously: SID-based user tokens are effective on their own, yield additive gains alongside dense embeddings, and together outperform the previous-generation, non-LLM user model in production.

PhyMo: Learning Physical Dynamics with Accurate and Continuous Motion from Multi-View Videos

Shangjia Liu, Jinxi Li, Siyuan Zhou, Bo Yang, Bing Wang

Recovering dynamic 3D scene geometry, appearance, and the physical motion states that govern scene evolution from multi-view videos is important yet challenging. A key difficulty is that appearance can be deceptive. Under rendering supervision alone, a model may fit the observed images by changing color or opacity to compensate for inaccurate deformation, rather than recovering the true evolving geometry and motion. This issue is especially severe in scenes with fast or locally complex motion, where inaccurate trajectories can still produce plausible images over the observed frames, but lead to unreliable reconstruction and discontinuous future prediction. In this paper, we propose PhyMo, a framework for learning evolving dynamics from multi-view videos. We introduce a Motion-Aware Trajectory Representation that drives the model to recover accurate motion from deformation, rather than relying on appearance shortcuts to explain observed motion. On top of this, we propose a Continuous Motion Evolution module with bidirectional kinematic continuity constraint to promote temporally consistent evolution of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Together, these designs yield geometrically faithful interpolation and continuous motion extrapolation. Experiments on four dynamic scene benchmarks demonstrate state-of-the-art performance.

Democratizing LLM Training with the Edge: Challenges, Systems, and the Road Ahead

Ziyue Luo, Jiaxuan Cai, Cedric LeDenmat, Srijith Nair, Fatemeh Nourzad, Rohith Krishnan, Qinhang Wu, Jifan Zhang 等 30 位作者

The growing computational power of modern GPU data centers has let a few industrial giants train and deploy large language models (LLMs) on massive amounts of data. Yet the sheer scale of these models and their training data makes centralized development increasingly hard to sustain, and at the same time shuts out smaller institutions that hold relevant private data but lack comparable infrastructure. In this paper, we organize our positions on distributed LLM training around the pretraining and fine-tuning paradigms, covering federated learning, split learning, and decentralized approaches, and we assess their readiness for geo-distributed settings with heterogeneous hardware and unreliable connectivity. We then present a {\em unified} system architecture built around a cloud-hosted parameter server that coordinates heterogeneous clients over outbound gRPC connections, reusing one communication, compression, and fault-tolerance stack for both pretraining and a family of fine-tuning methods. We validate the design with real geo-distributed experiments on GPT-2 Medium and Llama3-1B pretraining across multiple university sites, showing stable convergence under realistic conditions. Finally, we chart the road ahead, identifying open problems that span frontier model support, elastic fault tolerance, adaptive compression, federated alignment, privacy and trust, incentive design, and system--algorithm co-design, all of which must be addressed to make democratized LLM training a reality.

Detecting AI-Generated Content on Social Media with Multi-modal Language Models

Chenyang Yang, Shen Yan, Yibo Yang, Litao Hu, Yuchen Liu, Yuan Zeng, Hanchao Yu, Yinan Zhu 等 16 位作者

Generative AI has enabled the creation of photorealistic images and videos that are increasingly disseminated on social media, often used for spam, misinformation, manipulation, and fraud. Existing AI-generated content (AIGC) detection methods face challenges including poor generalization to new generation models, reliance on single modalities, and lack of interpretable explanations. We present our pipeline that mitigates these issues by continuously curating diverse multi-modal social media data and training a compact vision-language model for detection and explanation. Our model achieves state-of-the-art detection performance on public benchmarks and demonstrates robust detection and explanation capabilities on internal social media datasets across multiple platforms. We deployed our model for post recommendation on social media platforms and observed positive downstream impacts on user engagement, demonstrating that it is feasible to perform effective AIGC detection in dynamic, real-world social media environments.

Safeguarding LLM Fine-tuning via Push-Pull Distributional Alignment

Haozhong Wang, Zhuo Li The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Yibo Yang Shanghai Jiao Tong University, He Zhao Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, CSIRO, Hongyuan Zha The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Dandan Guo

The inherent safety alignment of Large Language Models (LLMs) is prone to erosion during fine-tuning, even when using seemingly innocuous datasets. While existing defenses attempt to mitigate this via data selection, they typically rely on heuristic, instance-level assessments that neglect the global geometry of the data distribution and fail to explicitly repel harmful patterns. To address this, we introduce Safety Optimal Transport (SOT), a novel framework that reframes safe fine-tuning from an instance-level filtering challenge to a distribution-level alignment task grounded in Optimal Transport (OT). At its core is a dual-reference “push-pull” weight-learning mechanism: SOT optimizes sample importance by actively pulling the downstream distribution towards a trusted safe anchor while simultaneously pushing it away from a general harmful reference. This establishes a robust geometric safety boundary that effectively purifies the training data. Extensive experiments across diverse model families and domains demonstrate that SOT significantly enhances model safety while maintaining competitive downstream performance, achieving a superior safety-utility trade-off compared to baselines.

PaCoRe: Learning to Scale Test-Time Compute with Parallel Coordinated Reasoning

Jingcheng Hu, Yinmin Zhang StepFun, Shijie Shang, Xiaobo Yang, Yue Peng Tencent, Zhewei Huang, Hebin Zhou StepFun Inc., Xin Wu 等 19 位作者

We introduce Parallel Coordinated Reasoning (PaCoRe), a training-and-inference framework designed to overcome a central limitation of contemporary language models: their inability to scale test-time compute (TTC) far beyond sequential reasoning under a fixed context window. PaCoRe departs from the traditional sequential paradigm by driving TTC through massive parallel exploration coordinated via a message-passing architecture in multiple rounds. Each round launches many parallel reasoning trajectories, compacts their findings into context-bounded messages, and synthesizes these messages to guide the next round and ultimately produce the final answer. Trained end-to-end with large-scale, outcome-based reinforcement learning, the model masters the synthesis abilities required by PaCoRe and scales to multi-million-token effective TTC without exceeding context limits. The approach yields strong improvements across diverse domains and notably pushes reasoning beyond frontier systems in mathematics: an 8B model reaches 94.5% on HMMT 2025, surpassing GPT-5’s 93.2% by scaling effective TTC to roughly two million tokens. We open-source model checkpoints, training data, and the full inference pipeline to accelerate follow-up work.

Vision-Language Introspection: Mitigating Overconfident Hallucinations in MLLMs via Interpretable Bi-Causal Steering

Shuliang Liu, Songbo Yang, Dong Fang LIGHTSPEED STUDIOS, Sihang Jia The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Yuqi Tang, Lingfeng Su Independent researcher, Ruoshui Peng The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Yibo Yan The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Alibaba 等 10 位作者

Object hallucination critically undermines the reliability of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), often stemming from a fundamental failure in cognitive introspection—where models blindly trust linguistic priors over specific visual evidence. Existing mitigations remain limited: contrastive decoding approaches operate superficially without rectifying internal semantic misalignments, while current latent steering methods rely on static vectors that lack instance-specific precision. We introduce Vision-Language Introspection (VLI), a training-free inference framework that simulates a metacognitive self-correction process. VLI first performs Attributive Introspection to diagnose hallucination risks via probabilistic conflict detection and localize the causal visual anchors. It then employs Interpretable Bi-Causal Steering to actively modulate the inference process, dynamically isolating visual evidence from background noise while neutralizing blind confidence through adaptive calibration. VLI achieves state-of-the-art performance on advanced models, reducing object hallucination rates by 12.67% on MMHal-Bench and improving accuracy by 5.8% on POPE.

Incomplete In-context Learning

Wenqiang Wang, Wen Yujia, Yan Xiao Sun Yat-Sen University, Zhifeng Chen, Yangshijie Zhang Lanzhou University, Peng Chen, Mingbo Yang, Xiaochun Cao

Existing In-context Learning (ICL) typically assumes the retrieval dataset contains demonstrations for all output label spaces. However, in real-world scenarios, delays in dataset updates or incomplete data annotation may result in the retrieval dataset containing labeled demonstrations for only a subset of the output space. We refer to this phenomenon as an incomplete retrieval dataset and define the in-context learning under this condition as Incomplete In-context Learning (IICL). To address IICL, we propose Iterative Judgments and Integrated Prediction (IJIP), a framework with train-free and train-based variants. For classification, the iterative judgments stage of IJIP reformulates an (m)-class problem into (m) binary tasks, converting IICL into standard ICL. The integrated prediction stage of IJIP then refines results using both the input and initial predictions. We further extend IJIP to text regression and generation, and introduce lightweight variants that reduce computation and token costs. Across six LLMs, seven tasks, and eight datasets, IJIP achieves state-of-the-art results under two incompleteness settings and even outperforms standard ICL with complete labels. IJIP also supports a semi-supervised variant and can serve as a plug-and-play enhancement for existing ICL and zero-shot methods.

UNIKIE-BENCH: Benchmarking Large Multimodal Models for Key Information Extraction in Visual Documents

Yifan Ji, Zhipeng Xu, Zhenghao Liu Northeastern University, Zulong Chen, Qian Zhang Alibaba Group, Zhibo Yang, Junyang Lin Alibaba Group, Yu Gu 等 10 位作者

Key Information Extraction (KIE) from real-world documents remains challenging due to substantial variations in layout structures, visual quality, and task-specific information requirements. Recent Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) have shown promising potential for performing end-to-end KIE directly from document images. To enable a comprehensive and systematic evaluation across realistic and diverse application scenarios, we introduce UNIKIE-BENCH, a unified benchmark designed to rigorously evaluate the KIE capabilities of LMMs. UNIKIE-BENCH consists of two complementary tracks: a constrained-category KIE track with scenario-predefined schemas that reflect practical application needs, and an open-category KIE track that extracts any key information that is explicitly present in the document. Experiments on 15 state-of-the-art LMMs reveal substantial performance degradation under diverse schema definitions, long-tail key fields, and complex layouts, along with pronounced performance disparities across different document types and scenarios. These findings underscore persistent challenges in grounding accuracy and layout-aware reasoning for LMM-based KIE. All codes and datasets are available at https://github.com/NEUIR/UNIKIE-BENCH.

PDR: A Plug-and-Play Positional Decay Framework for LLM Pre-training Data Detection

Jinhan Liu, Yibo Yang Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Ruiying Lu, Piotr Piękos King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Yimeng Chen King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Peng Wang, Dandan Guo

Detecting pre-training data in Large Language Models (LLMs) is crucial for auditing data privacy and copyright compliance, yet it remains challenging in black-box, zero-shot settings where computational resources and training data are scarce. While existing likelihood-based methods have shown promise, they typically aggregate token-level scores using uniform weights, thereby neglecting the inherent information-theoretic dynamics of autoregressive generation. In this paper, we hypothesize and empirically validate that memorization signals are heavily skewed towards the high-entropy initial tokens, where model uncertainty is highest, and decay as context accumulates. To leverage this linguistic property, we introduce Positional Decay Reweighting (PDR), a training-free and plug-and-play framework. PDR explicitly reweights token-level scores to amplify distinct signals from early positions while suppressing noise from later ones. Extensive experiments show that PDR acts as a robust prior and can usually enhance a wide range of advanced methods across multiple benchmarks.

A Functionality-Grounded Benchmark for Evaluating Web Agents in E-commerce Domains

Xianren Zhang, Shreyas Prasad Amazon, Di Wang Amazon, Qiuhai Zeng Amazon, Suhang Wang Pennsylvania State University, Wenbo Yan Amazon, Mat Hans Amazon

Web agents have shown great promise in performing many tasks on e-commerce websites. To assess their capabilities, several benchmarks have been introduced. However, current benchmarks in the e-commerce domain face two major problems. First, they primarily focus on product search tasks (e.g., “Find an Apple Watch”), failing to capture the broader range of functionalities offered by real-world e-commerce services such as Amazon, including account management and gift card operations. Second, existing benchmarks typically evaluate whether the agent completes the user query, but ignore the potential risks involved. In practice, web agents can make unintended changes that negatively impact the user’s account or status. For instance, an agent might purchase the wrong item, delete a saved address, or incorrectly configure an auto-reload setting. To address these gaps, we propose a new benchmark called Amazon-Bench. To generate user queries that cover a broad range of tasks, we propose a data generation pipeline that leverages webpage content and interactive elements (e.g., buttons, check boxes) to create diverse, functionality-grounded user queries covering tasks such as address management, wishlist management, and brand store following. To enhance agent evaluation, we propose an automated evaluation framework that assesses both the performance and safety of web agents. We systematically evaluate various agents, finding that current agents struggle with complex queries and pose safety risks. These results highlight the need for developing more robust and reliable web agents.

Act as you think: Reinforcing Consistent Reasoning in Medical Visual Question Answering

Songtao Jiang, Yuan Wang, Ruizhe Chen, Yan Zhang ByteDance Inc., Ruilin Luo, Bohan Lei Zhejiang University, Yeying Jin, Sibo Song Alibaba Group 等 12 位作者

While reinforcement learning from verifiable rewards (RLVR) has been proven highly effective for enhancing reasoning, its application to medical visual question answering (Med-VQA) is hampered by models producing reasoning inconsistent with either the visual evidence or the final answer. Our analysis reveals a critical flaw in RLVR training: it paradoxically encourages models to disregard visual evidence and generate answers that contradict their own reasoning. This degradation is most pronounced in specialized medical modalities (e.g., Fundus, Ultrasound) where base VLMs lack robust understanding, a failure we attribute to a flawed reward mechanism exacerbated by the scarcity of diverse training data. To tackle this, we introduce Med-Zero-17K, a large-scale dataset spanning over 30 modalities and 24 clinically relevant tasks, and the Multi-Consistency Reward (MCR) framework, which explicitly rewards both perceptual grounding and logical coherence. Extensive experiments validate our approach: integrating MCR into the RLVR framework delivers robust performance gains. This success stems from our crucial finding that rewarding internal consistency is significantly more effective than attempting to judge reasoning correctness. Furthermore, MCR proves highly versatile, exhibiting strong generalization across diverse VLM backbones, compatibility with RL algorithms like GRPO and DPO, and extending its effectiveness to 3D VQA tasks and R1-style training paradigms. Code and dataset will be released.

EvolvR: Self-Evolving Pairwise Reasoning for Story Evaluation to Enhance Generation

Although the effectiveness of Large Language Models as judges has been validated, their performance remains limited in open-ended tasks, particularly in story evaluation. Accurate story evaluation is crucial not only for assisting human quality judgment but also for providing reward signals to guide story generation. However, existing methods face a dilemma: prompt engineering for closed-source models suffers from poor adaptability, while fine-tuning approaches for open-source models lack the reasoning capabilities essential for story evaluation. To address this, we propose the Self-Evolving Pairwise Reasoning (EvolvR) framework. Grounded in pairwise comparison, the framework first self-synthesizes score-aligned Chain-of-Thought (CoT) data via a multi-persona strategy. To ensure data quality, these raw CoTs undergo a self-filtering process, utilizing multi-agents to guarantee their logical rigor and robustness. Finally, the evaluator trained on the refined data is deployed as a reward model to guide the story generation task. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework achieves state-of-the-art performance on three evaluation benchmarks including StoryER, HANNA and OpenMEVA. Furthermore, when served as a reward model, it enhances the quality of generated stories, thereby validating the superiority of our self-evolving approach.

Dynamics of Cognitive Heterogeneity: Investigating Behavioral Biases in Multi-Stage Supply Chains with LLM-Based Simulation

Jiuyun Jiang, Yuecheng Hong, Bo Yang, Jin Yang, Guangxin Jiang Harbin Institute of Technology, Xiaomeng Guo Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Guang Xiao Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Modeling coordination among generative agents in complex multi-round decision-making presents a core challenge for AI and operations management. Although behavioral experiments have revealed cognitive biases behind supply chain inefficiencies, traditional methods face scalability and control limitations. We introduce a scalable experimental paradigm using Large Language Models (LLMs) to simulate multi-stage supply chain dynamics. Grounded in a Hierarchical Reasoning Framework, this study specifically analyzes the impact of cognitive heterogeneity on agent interactions. Unlike prior homogeneous settings, we employ DeepSeek and GPT agents to systematically vary reasoning sophistication across supply chain tiers. Through rigorously replicated and statistically validated simulations, we investigate how this cognitive diversity influences collective outcomes. Results indicate that agents exhibit myopic and self-interested behaviors that exacerbate systemic inefficiencies. However, we demonstrate that information sharing effectively mitigates these adverse effects. Our findings extend traditional behavioral methods and offer new insights into the dynamics of AI-enabled organizations. This work underscores both the potential and limitations of LLM-based agents as proxies for human decision-making in complex operational environments.

Triviality Corrected Endogenous Reward

Xinda Wang Peking University, Zhengxu Hou, Yangshijie Zhang Lanzhou University, Yanbingren Alibaba Group, Jialin Liu, ChenZhuo Zhao, Zhibo Yang, Bin-Bin Yang Alibaba Group 等 9 位作者

Reinforcement learning for open-ended text generation is constrained by the lack of verifiable rewards, necessitating reliance on judge models that require either annotated data or powerful closed-source models. Inspired by recent work on unsupervised reinforcement learning for mathematical reasoning using confidence-based endogenous rewards, we investigate whether this principle can be adapted to open-ended writing tasks. We find that directly applying confidence rewards leads to Triviality Bias: the policy collapses toward high-probability outputs, reducing diversity and meaningful content. We propose TCER (Triviality Corrected Endogenous Reward), which addresses this bias by rewarding the relative information gain between a specialist policy and a generalist reference policy, modulated by a probability-dependent correction mechanism. Across multiple writing benchmarks and model architectures, TCER achieves consistent improvements without external supervision. Furthermore, TCER also transfers effectively to mathematical reasoning, validating the generality of our approach across different generation tasks.
