Unlimited OCR Works 2

Shu Wei, Jingjing Wu, Qunyi Xie, Lingshu Zhang, Xiangcheng Du, Yannian Fu, Mengjie Wang, Zuyi Wang 等 12 位作者

Unlimited OCR ushers the era of long-horizon parsing, substantially mitigating the growth of working memory as document lengthens. However, as document length scales to hundreds of pages, the visual context grows substantially, sharply increasing the computational cost of each decoding step and limiting the scalability of ultra-long document parsing. Inspired by human book transcription via localized focus without re-scanning preceding pages, we introduce Unlimited OCR 2, a document parsing model that looks only at what it transcribes. Building on Unlimited OCR, we upgrade all the decoder attention modules to Sparse Reference Sliding Window Attention (SR-SWA), bounding active reference tokens to a fixed capacity and thus sustaining constant computational costs across arbitrarily long documents. By combining SR-SWA with Unlimited-Horizon Decoding Paradigm, Unlimited OCR 2 enables document parsing over virtually unlimited lengths without prohibitive memory overhead. At the hundred-page scale, Unlimited OCR 2 achieves 7.0$\times$ and 5.6$\times$ per-step speedups over Full Attention and R-SWA, respectively. Furthermore, it delivers state-of-the-art end-to-end performance on both MPDocBench and MarathonDocBench, our newly proposed benchmark targeting hundred-page document parsing. Ultimately, the capacity for uninterrupted, one-shot document parsing signifies a fundamental paradigm shift into the OCR 3.0 era.

SpectralTF-MAE: A Pre-trained Spectral Foundation Model for Tokamak Fusion Plasma Diagnostics

Xiao Wang, Zhijie Lu, Duoqing Yang, Jiangtao Yu, Jin Tang, Zichao Lin, Hongming Zhang, Guosheng Xu 等 10 位作者

Spectroscopic diagnostics provide rich information for characterizing plasma states in tokamak fusion experiments, while existing learning-based approaches are often designed for individual tasks and rely heavily on labeled data. In this work, we propose SpectralTF-MAE, a self-supervised spectral foundation model for tokamak plasma diagnostics. The model is pretrained on paired charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) and X-ray crystal spectroscopy (XCS) measurements through masked spectral reconstruction. To better capture diagnostically important spectral structures, we introduce a peak-aware masking strategy together with a peak-enhanced reconstruction objective, encouraging the model to focus on characteristic spectral regions. A shared Transformer encoder is employed to learn transferable representations across different diagnostic modalities. The pretrained model is further adapted to several downstream tasks, including plasma-parameter prediction, cross-diagnostic spectral generation, and spectral peak analysis. Experiments on EAST diagnostic data demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves competitive performance across different tasks and consistently benefits from self-supervised spectral pretraining. These results indicate the potential of SpectralTF-MAE as a general and transferable representation learning framework for plasma spectroscopic diagnostics.

Encounter-Driven City-Scale Human Mobility Generation with Large Language Models

Chao Li, Renhe Jiang, Chuan Xiao, Jiawei Wang

Large language models (LLMs) have shown strong potential for human mobility generation by modeling individual routines, activities, and mobility preferences. However, existing approaches remain largely resident-centric: generating realistic individual trajectories does not necessarily recover the encounters that emerge when multiple residents co-occur at the same place and time. To this end, we study encounter-aware human mobility generation, which jointly preserves individual mobility and population-level interaction structure. We propose EncounterMob, an encounter-driven LLM framework consisting of a coarse-to-fine Encounter Generator and an Iterative Coupling Framework. The Encounter Generator first captures city-level encounter rhythms and then instantiates participant-time-venue encounters, while the Iterative Coupling Framework coordinates these encounters with personal mobility behavior through successive refinement. We further introduce an encounter recovery protocol covering encounter marginal and joint distributions over residents, times, and venues. Experiments on the Japan and NYC datasets show that EncounterMob outperforms all external baselines on all seven encounter metrics and all six personal mobility metrics. Compared with ELLMob, it reduces the participant-time-venue joint error by 40.4%/41.7% and the mean personal mobility error by 58.8%/32.7% on Japan/NYC, respectively.

Forward-Backward Map Matching for Airborne Magnetic Anomaly Navigation

Joseph O'Leary, Tapio Simula, Tom Kimpson, Corey Davey, Wenchao Li, Andrew D. Greentree, Allison Kealy

Airborne magnetic anomaly navigation provides a passive, unjammable alternative to Global Navigation Satellite Systems positioning by matching magnetometer measurements against a lithospheric magnetic anomaly map. Existing map-matching algorithms either assume a Gaussian posterior (extended Kalman filter), require Monte Carlo sampling (particle filter), or discard posterior uncertainty in favour of a single optimal path (Viterbi algorithm). Here we formulate map matching as inference on a chain-structured factor graph and solve it segment by segment using the forward-backward algorithm, which yields a discrete posterior over candidate positions and its Shannon entropy $H_t$ at time $t$. Over the \texttt{Renfrew\_395} map, $10^3$ synthetic trials yield a median position error of $32.7$ m, $91\%$ below the median inertial drift of $362$ m. On these trials and $10^3$ flight paths, the median error is $43\%$ below the extended Kalman filter and particle filter. Across these paths, a threshold on segment-level entropy detects $47\%$ of segments with errors above two map cells and $94\%$ of those above three, at a $10\%$ false-alarm rate. The foregoing results indicate that $H_t$ provides a truth-free diagnostic of map-conditioned navigation ambiguity.

Venus-DefakerOne2: A Vision-Forensics Foundation Model with Broader Coverage

Chenfan Qu, Yachao Liang, Mingqi Fang, Jiangwei Xie, Zhenming Wang, Baoyue Zhang, Changjiang Jiang, Zheng Chang 等 30 位作者

Real-world forgery is inherently heterogeneous: it manifests not only as digital manipulation but also as physical spoofing, and is carried not only by images but also by videos. Despite substantial progress, a unified anti-forgery foundation model covering such a broad threat spectrum remains absent. In this paper, we present Venus-DefakerOne2, which substantially extends the forensic capability boundary along both the forgery-form and media-type dimensions. Trained on tens of millions of open-source and in-house samples, it incorporates two key designs. Tide-Style-Tuning alternates LoRA and full-parameter fine-tuning to balance computational efficiency, generalization, and hard-sample fitting while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Entropy-based Test Adaptation determines the optimal prediction modality by analyzing prediction entropy. Venus-DefakerOne2 achieves new state-of-the-art performance across a comprehensive suite of benchmarks, including DeepFake faces (96.7%), AI-generated images (93.3%), tampered documents (87.6%), manipulated natural images (89.6%), physical spoofs (93.1%), and AI-generated videos (96.0%). It significantly outperforms both specialized expert models and its predecessor, DefakerOne, establishing itself as a powerful and versatile foundation model for binary-decision forensic tasks.

Timestral

We introduce Timestral, a family of four time series foundation models for probabilistic forecasting, with 5M, 28M, 123M, and 209M parameters. Timestral sets a new state of the art on GIFT-Eval, TIME, and fev-bench, where Timestral-209M and Timestral-123M take the top two places on every metric. We achieve this with three ingredients: Decoupled Horizon Forecasting (DHF), which separates prediction tokens from the causally encoded context, so that longer horizons are trained without masking context and each observed value is both a forecast target and context for later forecasts; a covariate framework that natively supports known-future covariates within a causal architecture; and a two-stage pipeline that pretrains exclusively on a diverse, large-scale synthetic corpus before post-training on a mix of real and synthetic data with extended context. This report describes the model design and its benchmark results. Weights for all four models are available on Hugging Face and inference code on GitHub.

Correspondence Is Not Transfer: A Pairing-Controlled Study of Clinical Audio-Metadata Alignment

Liu He, Xi Wang, Jiahong Yuan, Yuanchao Li

Clinical audio models are often trained by aligning recordings with participant metadata or text derived from it. This metadata is rarely a clean disease signal, since a single profile also contains symptoms, age, sex, missing responses, and recruitment information. We examine what alignment adds to frozen audio features by varying only the audio-meta data pairing. We keep the audio backbones fixed and train only a projector under correct pairing and three shuffled conditions that progressively preserve the disease label and recorded sex. We then evaluate each projector on profile retrieval, attribute probing, and disease classification on covariate-matched test sets. On UKCOVID, correct pairing clearly improves retrieval and makes sex easier to decode, confirming that the pairing manipulation works. Most of the sex-probe gap disappears when the control also preserves recorded sex, while a small retrieval gap remains. Matched disease AUROC differences are small, and every interval includes zero, so modest benefits or harms are not ruled out. The same pattern appears when we rerun the frozen pipeline on CODA TB, Cambridge COVID-19 Sounds, and Coswara, where retrieval and sex-probe contrasts are consistently positive but disease contrasts are not. We find no consistent evidence that better profile correspondence translates into better disease prediction and suggest reporting these outcomes separately.

Advancement or Acceleration? How Data Curation Improves LLM Training

Jiaxing Wang, Zicheng Zhang, Deping Xiang, Jin Xu, Yong Li, Chao Liu, Pengzhang Liu, Qixia Jiang

While data curation is widely credited with improving large language model training, a basic question remains unresolved: does curation expand what a model can ultimately learn, or merely reach the same solution faster? In this paper, we formalize this distinction between advancement (improving the attainable performance) and acceleration (reaching the same performance with less data). Through an analytic characterization and real-world LLM experiments, we show that advancement requires a correctable train-target gap. When the baseline training and target objectives coincide, no curation policy improves the endpoint, although curation may still accelerate training. This reframes advancement as a property of the curation task rather than the curation method. Under a common gap-centric view of data mixture and selection, we operationalize this condition as the $Δ$-test, an observable discrepancy between the uncurated baseline's training and target losses that is computable prior to expensive curation. Across extensive experiments, an appreciably nonzero $Δ$ predicts persistent gains, whereas gains near $Δ=0$ tend to diminish as the training budget grows. Beyond individual methods, our findings recenter data curation on the task itself and point to target-set construction as a promising direction for shaping what curation can achieve.

SU(2)-Equivariant Spinor Message Passing for Molecular Magnetism

Erh-Wei Sheng, Beom Seok Kang, Yuchao Lin, Danish Khan, Anima Anandkumar

Predicting molecular magnetic properties often requires costly electronic-structure calculations that account for spin-orbit coupling. Inspired by the spinor nature of the underlying electronic states, we introduce eSpinor, an SU(2)-equivariant graph neural network that propagates spinor features alongside the integer-rank tensors used in conventional equivariant models. We initialize spinors from eigenvectors of an approximate Hamiltonian that includes spin-orbit coupling. The network preserves their rotation laws and makes predictions independent of arbitrary eigenbasis choices. Comparisons with geometry-only and Hamiltonian-informed baselines assess the benefit of this architecture beyond supplying electronic information. On cobalt single-molecule magnet candidates, eSpinor improves magnetic anisotropy predictions, including for unseen ligands. It also improves excitation-energy predictions for dysprosium candidates with unseen ligands, extending the benefit to rotationally invariant scalar targets. For a dysprosium magnetic resonance imaging probe, it predicts real electron-spin correlations and low-field nuclear relaxation rates more accurately despite static crystal-field errors similar to the Hamiltonian-informed baseline. This dynamical advantage extends from water to methanol without retraining. These results support spinor message passing as a useful inductive bias for molecular magnetism in the tested systems and show why model selection should be guided by accuracy on the intended physical observables.

Let the Gate Decide: Per-Lookup Precision for Quantized Conditional Memory in LLMs

Tianqi Chen, Xunchao Li, Linchuan Xie, Guanghua Yu, Jianchen Zhu, Peisong Wang, Jian Cheng

Conditional memory layers, such as DeepSeek's Engram, attach large hashed n-gram tables to a language model, and removing them from DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash costs 36.8 PopQA points. Low-bit quantization loses long-tail facts first, and the standard remedy, giving more bits to frequently accessed rows, backfires: refining lookups by access frequency is worse than refining them at random. We trace this to the gate that scales each retrieved row. A lookup's quantization error is weighted by its gate, which is small for frequent n-grams, large for the rare n-grams of long-tail entities, and computable from a 1-bit code. GateRQ therefore stores each row as a ladder of 1-bit residual codes, keeps level 1 in GPU memory to compute the gate, and reads deeper levels only for the lookups the gate ranks highest. Without retraining, GateRQ cuts GPU table memory by 7.8x on DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, which raises vLLM throughput by 11%-31% over FP8 tables, while losing about 1 PopQA point at 1.50 bits read per lookup and 0.2 points at 2.10 bits across two models.

FADiff: Fusion-Aware Differentiable Optimization for DNN Scheduling on Tensor Accelerators

Shuao Jia, Zichao Ling, Chen Bai, Bei Yu, Kang Zhao, Jianwang Zhai

Efficiently deploying Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) - particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) - on tensor accelerators is essential for achieving high throughput and energy efficiency at the edge. However, the combinatorial explosion of the joint design space spanning intra-layer mapping and inter-layer fusion renders existing approaches inadequate. In this work, we present FADiff, a gradient-based optimization framework that automatically discovers optimal mapping and fusion strategies to accelerate DNN inference. We first formulate a unified, differentiable analytical cost model that accurately estimates the energy and latency of individual layer mappings as well as diverse fusion configurations. We then combine CP-SAT-based pre-enumeration of feasible discrete candidates with augmented-Lagrangian penalties over continuous relaxations, enabling a constrained gradient-based search that efficiently navigates the vast design space to identify optimal joint strategies. Experimental results show that FADiff consistently outperforms prior methods, delivering superior optimization quality with significantly faster convergence in both energy and latency.

JevVLA: Jev-Inspired Energy-Based Adaptation for Vision-Language-Action Policies

Wei Wang, Wenqiao Zhang, Zheqi Lv, Zheng Dong, Yingjie Niu, Jiaqi Zhu, Jun Xiao, Chao Li 等 9 位作者

Vision-language-action (VLA) policies can select among discrete candidates for pick-and-place manipulation or generate continuous action chunks for motion control. Improving both forms of decision making through a common mechanism while retaining the capabilities of a pretrained policy is an important adaptation problem. Inspired by Jev's structured, probabilistic decision interface, we propose JevVLA, a lightweight energy-based adaptation framework for VLA policies. JevVLA instantiates this inspiration by modeling the relative quality of action proposals: with the base policy frozen, it learns a differentiable scalar energy conditioned on observations, task context, and actions, using execution feedback, expert corrections, or demonstration-derived preferences. JevVLA uses this single learned action preference function in two ways: its values compare discrete candidates, while its action gradients correct continuous actions or guide their generation. Candidate selection and continuous control thus share one trainable decision core. Each benchmark uses independently trained weights and fixed input/output encodings, while retaining the same core network with approximately 80,000 trainable parameters. On the held-out test sets, JevVLA improves task success over the respective matched base-policy controls by 1.28, 2.31, 1.60, 1.52, and 1.28 percentage points on MetaWorld MT50, VIMA, LanguageTable, LIBERO Plus, and CLIPort, respectively. These results support the feasibility of a lightweight, Jev-inspired energy model for adapting both discrete action selection and continuous action guidance. The JevVLA implementation will be open-sourced at https://github.com/ZJU4EmbodiedAI/JevVLA.

IPS: In-Prompt Process Supervision for Short Video Content Moderation

Mingchao Liu, Yu Sun, Ruixiao Sun, Xin Dong, Xiang Shen, Hongwei Wang, Hongyu Xiong, Yang Song

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) are effective at capturing the semantics of short video content; however, they often fail to attend to the policy-specific details required for reliable content moderation. To address this limitation, we introduce IPS, a novel framework that integrates In-prompt Process Supervision into MLLMs by introducing sequential reasoning over ancillary questions during fine-tuning. IPS consistently outperforms baseline MLLMs on public and proprietary benchmarks. Moreover, replacing human-annotated ancillary labels with MLLM-generated ones results in only marginal performance degradation, demonstrating robustness to noisy supervision and strong scalability with model-generated annotations. These findings establish IPS as a scalable and effective solution for complex multimodal classification in large-scale industrial settings.

Bit-by-Bit: Progressive QAT Strategy with Outlier Channel Splitting for Stable Low-Bit LLMs

Binxing Xu, Hao Gu The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Lujun Li, Hao Wang, Bei Liu The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Jiacheng Liu, Qiyuan Zhu, Xintong Yang 等 11 位作者

Training LLMs at ultra-low precision remains a formidable challenge. Direct low-bit QAT often suffers from convergence instability and substantial training costs, exacerbated by quantization noise from heavy-tailed outlier channels and error accumulation across layers. To address these issues, we present \text{Bit-by-Bit}, a progressive QAT framework with outlier channel splitting. Our approach integrates three key components: (1) block-wise progressive training that reduces precision stage by stage, ensuring stable initialization for low-bit optimization; (2) nested structure of integer quantization grids to enable a “train once, deploy any precision” paradigm, allowing a single model to support multiple bit-widths without retraining; (3) rounding-aware outlier channel splitting, which mitigates quantization error while acting as an identity transform that preserves the quantized outputs. Furthermore, we follow microscaling groups with E4M3 scales, capturing dynamic activation ranges in alignment with OCP/NVIDIA standards. To address the lack of efficient 2-bit kernels, we developed custom operators for both W2A2 and W2A16 configurations, achieving up to 11\times speedup over BF16. Under W2A2 settings, \text{Bit-by-Bit} significantly outperforms baselines like BitDistiller and EfficientQAT on both Llama2/3, achieving a loss of only 2.25 WikiText2 PPL compared to full-precision models.

PAR: Training-Free Positional Perturbation and Attention Recycling for Faithful OCR

Yao Yao, Manwen Liao University of Hong Kong, Weitian Zhang Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zuchao Li Wuhan University, Hai Zhao Shanghai Jiao Tong University

In high-precision scenarios, vision language models suffer from Linguistic Priors Hallucination. When processing familiar text, models tend to over-rely on internal parametric knowledge, effectively “reciting” the content rather than “reading” the image. In this paper, we first systematically investigate this phenomenon by constructing the GlitchText Probing Dataset. We discover that the model’s reliance on visual grounding diminishes significantly as the generation length increases. To mitigate this, we propose PAR (Positional Perturbation and Attention Recycling), a training-free, inference-time intervention framework. PAR consists of two parts: (1) Positional Perturbation (PP) injects structured phase noise into the rotary positional embeddings; (2) Foveal Attention Recycling (FAR) detects over-confident linguistic priors and dynamically redistributes attention mass back to important visual regions. Extensive experiments across state-of-the-art models, demonstrate that PAR significantly reduces hallucination rates (reducing CER by 12%), particularly in long-context scenarios, while maintaining robust generalization on standard benchmarks.

OneRec-Think: In-Text Reasoning for Generative Recommendation

Zhanyu Liu, Shiyao Wang, Xingmei Wang, Rongzhou Zhang, Jiaxin Deng, Honghui Bao, Jinghao Zhang Kuaishou- 快手科技, Wuchao Li 等 26 位作者

The powerful generative capacity of Large Language Models (LLMs) has instigated a paradigm shift in recommendation. However, existing generative models (e.g., OneRec) operate as implicit predictors, critically lacking the capacity for explicit and controllable reasoning—a key advantage of LLMs. To bridge this gap, we propose OneRec-Think, a unified framework that seamlessly integrates dialogue, reasoning, and personalized recommendation. OneRec-Think incorporates: (1) Itemic Alignment: cross-modal Item-Textual Alignment for semantic grounding; (2) Reasoning Activation: Reasoning Scaffolding to activate LLM reasoning within the recommendation context; and (3) Reasoning Enhancement, where we design a recommendation-specific reward function that accounts for the multi-validity nature of user preferences. Experiments across public benchmarks show state-of-the-art performance. Moreover, our proposed “Think-Ahead” architecture enables effective industrial deployment, achieving a 0.159% gain in APP Stay Time and validating the practical efficacy of the model’s explicit reasoning capability.

End-to-End Optimization of LLM-Driven Multi-Agent Search Systems via Heterogeneous-Group-Based Reinforcement Learning

Guanzhong Chen Tencent AIPD, Shaoxiong Yang Xiaomi Corporation, Chao Li Xiaomi Corporation, Wei Liu, Jian Luan Xiaomi Corporation, Zenglin Xu

Large language models (LLMs) are versatile, yet their deployment in complex real-world settings is limited by static knowledge cutoffs and the difficulty of producing controllable behavior within a single inference. Multi-agent search systems (MASS), which coordinate specialized LLM agents equipped with search tools, mitigate these issues via task decomposition and retrieval-augmented problem solving. However, optimizing LLMs for agent-specific roles remains labor-intensive with prompt engineering or supervised fine-tuning, motivating automated end-to-end training. Existing multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) methods such as Multi-Agent Proximal Policy Optimization (MAPPO) typically depend on large critic networks to evaluate joint actions, leading to instability and high memory costs. We introduce Multi-Agent Heterogeneous Group Policy Optimization (MHGPO), which updates policies by estimating relative advantages across heterogeneous groups of multi-agent rollouts, shifting the optimization focus from local agent performance to global system success. We further study three group rollout sampling strategies to trade off sample efficiency and optimization quality. Experiments show that MHGPO captures implicit inter-agent dependencies and consistently outperforms strong baselines in both task performance and computational efficiency.

Can Reasoning Path still be Effective as Input? Bridging Post-Reasoning to Chain-of-Thought Compression

Chengzhengxu Li, Xiaoming Liu, Zhaohan Zhang, Shengchao Liu, Guoxin Ma, Yu Lan, Cong Wang City University of Hong Kong, Chao Shen Xi’an Jiaotong University

Recent developments have enabled advanced reasoning in Large Language Models (LLMs) via long Chain-of-Thought (CoT), trading efficiency during inference for performance. Existing works focus on compressing generated CoT in reasoning, which impairs the necessary information for deriving the correct answer. In this work, we propose post-reasoning, a reasoning paradigm that takes CoT as a part of context to simplify the reasoning task for LLMs. We find that post-reasoning significantly reduces the generation length of LLMs, but its effectiveness hinges on the efficiency and the reliability of the contextual CoT generation. Therefore, we propose Upfront CoT (UCoT), an efficient post-reasoning framework for CoT compression. UCoT trains a lightweight model (compressor) to provide contextual CoT in form of soft tokens and trains the LLM (executor) to leverage this contextual CoT for producing the final answer. Extensive experiments show that UCoT maintains the powerful reasoning ability of executor while significantly reducing the length of CoT. It is worth mentioning that when applying UCoT to the Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct model, the usage of tokens on GSM8K dataset is reduced by 50%, while the performance is 3.08% higher than that of the state-of-the-art (SOTA) method. The code is available at: https://github.com/czx-li/UCoT.

JW-SVD: Bridging the Cross-Modal Mismatch in Post-Training MLLM Compression

Runchao Li Case Western Reserve University, Yao Fu Case Western Reserve University, Mu Sheng, Haotian Yu, Xianxuan Long Michigan State University, Kenneth A. Loparo Case Western Reserve University

Post-training compression of Multimodal LLMs faces a fundamental geometric conflict: parameter subspaces optimized for text often suppress orthogonal visual features. We demonstrate that standard SVD fails to resolve this cross-modal mismatch, causing catastrophic visual degradation. To bridge this gap, we introduce Joint-Whitening SVD (JW-SVD), a dual-objective framework that aligns vision and language manifolds via a Joint Covariance basis, preserving features critical to both. Additionally, we propose Global Spectrum-Aware Truncation to dynamically transfer parameter budget from the redundant Vision Tower to the sensitive Backbone. Experiments on Qwen2.5-VL and Llama-3-Next confirm that JW-SVD demonstrates superior retention of both text and image capabilities. In addition, it resolves the modality trade-off: it recovers over 30% of perceptual performance lost by baselines while maintaining parity in textual reasoning, enabling robust multimodal performance even at extreme compression rates.

The Reasoning Trap: How Enhancing LLM Reasoning Amplifies Tool Hallucination

Chenlong Yin Pennsylvania State University, Zeyang Sha Ant Group, Shiwen Cui ant group, Changhua Meng Ant Group, Zechao Li Nanjing University of Science and Techonolgy

Enhancing the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) is a key strategy for building agents that ”think then act”. However, recent observations, like OpenAI’s o3, suggest a paradox: stronger reasoning often coincides with increased hallucination, yet no prior work has systematically examined whether reasoning enhancement itself causes tool hallucination. We address this gap with the central question: Does strengthening reasoning increase tool hallucination? To answer this, we introduce SimpleToolHalluBench, a diagnostic benchmark measuring tool hallucination in two failure modes: (i) no tool available, and (ii) only distractor tools available. Through controlled experiments, we establish three key findings. First, we demonstrate a causal relationship: progressively enhancing reasoning through RL increases tool hallucination proportionally with task performance gains. Second, this effect transcends overfitting—training on non-tool tasks (e.g., mathematics) still amplifies subsequent tool hallucination. Third, the effect is method-agnostic, appearing when reasoning is instilled via supervised fine-tuning and when it is merely elicited at inference by switching from direct answers to step-by-step thinking. We also evaluate mitigation strategies including Prompt Engineering and Direct Preference Optimization (DPO), revealing a fundamental reliability–capability trade-off: reducing hallucination consistently degrades utility. Mechanistically, Reasoning RL disproportionately collapses tool-reliability–related representations, and hallucinations surface as amplified divergences concentrated in late-layer residual streams. These findings reveal that current reasoning enhancement methods inherently amplify tool hallucination, highlighting the need for new training objectives that jointly optimize for capability and reliability. Our implementation is provided at https://github.com/albert-y1n/Reasoning_Trap.

TRACE: Traversal Retrieval-Augmented Chain of Evidence for Document Understanding

Liqi He, Zuchao Li Wuhan University, Hao Huang Wuhan University, Ping Wang Wuhan University

Early Long-context Document Visual Question Answering (DocVQA) methods struggle with preserving visual semantics or handling finite context windows. Conversely, recent RAG-based approaches suffer from “semantic gaps” and “structural disconnections” due to passive retrieval mechanisms that ignore logical dependencies. To address these challenges, we introduce TRACE (Traversal Retrieval-Augmented Chain of Evidence). By navigating a Bi-Layered Graph that encodes both physical adjacency and semantic relevance, TRACE transforms retrieval from static matching into adaptive evidence chain construction. Furthermore, we propose M5BookVQA, a benchmark designed to assess deep, multi-hop reasoning in books, addressing the limitations of existing datasets. Extensive experiments show that TRACE achieves an average accuracy improvement of 14.07% on M5BookVQA and exhibits robust generalization with a 13.38% gain across four established benchmarks. Our source code is available at https://github.com/shimurenhlq/TRACE.

Tokenizers play a critical role in large language model studies. Despite recent advances, existing tokenizers fail to explicitly leverage historical tokenization results when making subsequent token decisions, nor do they selectively utilize such history based on contextual relevance. We propose SPEAK, a tokenizer that integrates spiking neurons to explicitly leverage historical tokenization results. Furthermore, we introduce an entropy-aware reset mechanism that selectively leverages history based on contextual relevance, which is determined by token-level entropy. High-entropy tokens are treated as contextual boundaries, whereas low-entropy tokens between consecutive such boundaries exhibit strong contextual relevance. Accordingly, we induce hard reset at high-entropy tokens to discard irrelevant historical tokenization results, and soft reset at low-entropy tokens to preserve and leverage relevant history. Experiments on 2 language models and 5 datasets spanning 16 languages demonstrate superior cross-lingual adaptability, with competitive performance and efficiency. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/zju-bmi-lab/SPEAK.

Vista-LLM: Decoupled Query-Guided Visual Token Pruning for Efficient Long-Video Large Language Models

Zhenyu Li, Zuchao Li Wuhan University, Ping Wang Wuhan University, Lefei Zhang Wuhan University, Haojun Ai

Long-video understanding is bottlenecked by the high cost of processing massive visual tokens. Current reduction strategies often rely on static allocation or inefficient in-network selection that disrupts optimized attention kernels. In this paper, we introduce Vista-LLM, a decoupled framework for query-guided visual token pruning. By filtering redundancy prior to inference with minimal overhead, Vista-LLM ensures full compatibility with Flash Attention. Our method employs a coarse-to-fine pipeline: (1) Query-Guided Dynamic Budgeting for adaptive temporal allocation; (2) a lightweight Semantic Scout for fine-grained, query-specific selection; and (3) Structure-Aware Compensation to preserve global context. Extensive experiments on benchmarks like Video-MME and MLVU demonstrate a significantly improved Pareto frontier. Notably, on LLaVA-OneVision, Vista-LLM reduces visual tokens by 90% and accelerates inference while retaining over 98% of baseline performance on average, effectively filtering visual noise.

Empowering Tabular Data Preparation with Language Models: Why and How?

Mengshi Chen, Yuxiang Sun, Tengchao Li Shanghai Jiaotong University, Jianwei Wang University of New South Wales, Kai Wang Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xuemin Lin Shanghai Jiaotong University, Ying Zhang University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Wenjie Zhang the university of new south wales

Data preparation is a critical step in enhancing the usability of tabular data and thus boosts downstream data-driven tasks. Traditional methods often face challenges in capturing the intricate relationships within tables and adapting to the tasks involved. Recent advances in Language Models (LMs), especially in Large Language Models (LLMs), offer new opportunities to automate and support tabular data preparation. However, why LMs suit tabular data preparation (i.e., how their capabilities match task demands) and how to use them effectively across phases still remain to be systematically explored. In this survey, we systematically analyze the role of LMs in enhancing tabular data preparation processes, focusing on four core phases: data acquisition, integration, cleaning, and transformation. For each phase, we present an integrated analysis of how LMs can be combined with other components for different preparation tasks, highlight key advancements, and outline prospective pipelines.

From AR to Diffusion: Efficiently Adapting Large Language Models with Strictly Causal and Elastic Horizons

Xiangyu Ma, Teng Xiao Wuhan University, Zuchao Li Wuhan University, Lefei Zhang Wuhan University

Diffusion models promise efficient parallel text generation but rely on bidirectional attention, creating a structural mismatch with pre-trained Autoregressive (AR) models. This incompatibility precludes reusing robust AR priors, necessitating prohibitive pre-training from scratch. To bridge this gap, we propose FLUID, a framework that efficiently adapts AR backbones to the diffusion paradigm. By enforcing Strictly Causal Alignment, FLUID enables seamless initialization from standard GPT-style checkpoints, circumventing the need for massive pre-training. Furthermore, we introduce Elastic Horizons, an entropy-driven mechanism that dynamically modulates denoising strides based on local information density rather than fixed schedules. Experiments demonstrate that FLUID achieves state-of-the-art performance while reducing training costs by orders of magnitude, effectively reconciling established AR foundations with efficient parallel generation. BoYaEval: Evaluating Multimodal Large Language Models on Understanding Ancient Chinese Musical Scores

Jiajia Li, Weizhi Xue, Yao Yao, Qiwei Li, Chong Chen, Zuchao Li Wuhan University, Ping Wang Wuhan University, Hai Zhao Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) excel in general tasks but struggle with specialized, structured cultural symbols. We introduce BoYaEval, the first comprehensive benchmark dedicated to deciphering diverse Ancient Chinese musical notations, including five types of ancient Chinese music notation systems. These systems utilize unique spatial layouts and specialized ideograms to encode pitch and intricate playing techniques. BoYaEval comprises 3,175 high-quality images across these notation styles and establishes a three-tier evaluation: Structural Parsing (symbol recognition), Instructional Translation (technique mapping), and Musical Reasoning (melody derivation). We evaluate 21 leading MLLMs. Results indicate that while models perform adequately in basic recognition, they fail in cross-system compositional logic, scoring only around 27% on reasoning tasks. BoYaEval highlights the limitations of current MLLMs in processing diverse spatial-symbolic dependencies, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern AI for digitizing intangible cultural heritage. The BoYaEval benchmark is publicly available at https://huggingface.co/datasets/MYTH-Lab/BoYaEval.
