Breaking Fault Lines: Unifying TEE-Assisted BFT Consensus in Partially Trusted Worlds

Xiaoqing Wen, Tong Liu, Jianyu Niu, Jialin Li, Cong Wang, Yinqian Zhang, Chen Feng

This paper revisits TEE-assisted BFT under a universal partial-TEE model, where an arbitrary subset of replicas execute inside TEEs while the remaining replicas operate without hardware trust guarantees. We show that heterogeneous trust changes the structure of quorum formation and fault tolerance. In particular, we derive a tight resilience bound f < max {n/3, m/2}, where n is the total number of replicas and m is the number of TEE-enabled replicas. The result reveals a sharp threshold phenomenon: TEEs improve fault tolerance only once they exceed two-thirds of the deployment. Guided by this characterization, we introduce two protocol principles: (1) a dual-quorum construction that safely combines TEE-only and mixed quorums, and (2) a TEE-leader fast path that leverages hardware-enforced non-equivocation to reduce both consensus and view-change latency. We realize these ideas in Raftel, which is, to our knowledge, the first HotStuff-style BFT protocol designed explicitly for arbitrary partial-TEE deployments, and in chained-Raftel, a pipelined variant that further accelerates mixed-trust execution. We implement both protocols atop Intel SGX and evaluate them in LAN and WAN environments. Our results show that Raftel achieves up to 625 TPS with sub-670 ms latency in WAN settings, outperforming HotStuff by up to 308 TPS in throughput while approaching the performance of fully TEE-assisted protocols.

Who Asks, Who Answers: Linear Attention Builds the Query in Hybrid Language Models

Wenqi Zeng, Chen Feng, YuAng Chen

Hybrid language models interleave linear-attention layers with a small number of softmax-attention layers. Prior work largely attributes in-context retrieval to softmax attention, treating linear attention primarily as a mechanism for compressing past context. We revisit this division of labor and show that linear attention plays a direct role in retrieval by constructing the query used by softmax attention. Studying Qwen3.5 (Gated DeltaNet) and Granite4.0 (Mamba-2), we identify an Encode--Address circuit. An early Encode block preserves token identity, while an Address block constructs the final-position representation from which a softmax \emph{reader} forms its attention query. Transplanting this representation between prompts with different queried keys redirects retrieval in 0.97--0.99 of cases. The Address block's recurrent state carries the retrieval target, and its computation transfers across architectures: replacing Granite's Address block with Qwen's restores retrieval accuracy to 0.92--0.94 without updating either model's weights. Across six Qwen3.5 models, Address computation becomes distributed at larger scales over a chain of blocks, each guiding a successive reader, as the query no longer passes from one reader to the next through attention. These findings reveal a division of labor in hybrid retrieval: linear attention constructs the query, while softmax attention performs the lookup. Depth through Recurrence: Towards Ultra-Efficient On-Device ASR

Chen Feng, Tianyi Xu, Ramchalam Kinattinkara Ramakrishnan, Yicheng Lin, Shaojie Zhuo, Zhaocong Yuan, Chenzheng Su, Xiaopeng Zhang

Modern automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems have achieved remarkable accuracy by scaling model depth and capacity, but at the cost of increased memory, energy, and computational demands. On edge devices where ASR is often most needed, such as watches and glasses, deploying such large models is infeasible due to extremely constrained resources. This raises a fundamental question: can we achieve high representational power in deep ASR models without scaling up parameterization? In this work, we revisit the role of depth and identify layer wise representational dynamics, in which most layers learn functionally similar transformations. Motivated by this insight, we propose a block-recurrent ASR architecture that replaces parameterized depth with a small set of recurrent blocks, each consisting of weight-shared layers, thereby preserving effective depth while drastically reducing model size. Through representation-guided grouping and knowledge distillation, block-recurrent models retain the accuracy of large reference models while using an order of magnitude fewer parameters. Across Open ASR Leaderboard benchmarks, a model with only two shared blocks recovers 97.4% of the accuracy of large models on average. The compact backbone further enables efficient on-device personalization through lightweight MoE-LoRA adaptation, allowing user-specific models to match or surpass the accuracy of general-purpose ASR systems with significantly lower inference cost. By reusing weights across recurrent steps, the proposed architecture reduces memory-access overhead and inference energy consumption. Together, these results show that high quality ASR can be achieved without large parameterization, and that structured recurrence provides a principled path towards ultra-compressed, energy-efficient, and personalized speech recognition on the edge.

Learning Force-Reactive Humanoid Loco-Manipulation

Sihang Li, Xiaofeng Guo, Jinkun Cao, Charlie Cheng, Ruihan Yang, Chen Feng, Guanya Shi, Haozhi Qi

Many everyday tasks require controlling contact force as well as motion. On a humanoid, this force must often be coordinated across both hands and the whole body, and cannot be specified by kinematic trajectories alone. Therefore, we present FLORE, a framework for learning force-reactive humanoid loco-manipulation. We collect robot-free demonstrations using two force-sensing UMI-style handheld grippers for hand motion and contact wrenches, and wearable trackers for body motion. A force-reactive diffusion policy takes vision, proprioception, and measured wrenches as input, then predicts actions and per-hand force commands. A hybrid compliance whole-body controller with force tracking executes these commands while maintaining balance: an integral of the force error measured by real force/torque (F/T) sensors lets each hand track force accurately along the commanded direction and remain compliant along the others. In simulation, the controller tracks per-hand force commands of varied magnitude and direction, with little loss in whole-body motion accuracy. Across three contact-rich tasks on the robot, the force-reactive policy succeeds in 80% of rollouts, compared with 26.7% for a position-only policy trained on the same demonstrations and executed by the same controller. BadScientist: Can a Research Agent Write Convincing but Unsound Papers that Fool LLM Reviewers?

Fengqing Jiang Apple and University of Washington, Yichen Feng University of Washington, Yuetai Li, Luyao Niu University of Washington, Basel Alomair University of Washington, Radha Poovendran University of Washington, Seattle

The convergence of LLM-powered research assistants and AI-based peer review systems creates a critical vulnerability: fully automated publication loops where AI-generated research is evaluated by AI reviewers without human oversight. We investigate this through BadScientist, a framework that evaluates whether fabrication-oriented paper generation agents can deceive multi-model LLM review systems. Our generator employs presentation-manipulation strategies requiring no real experiments. We develop a rigorous evaluation framework with formal error guarantees (concentration bounds and calibration analysis), calibrated on real data. Our results reveal systematic vulnerabilities: fabricated papers achieve acceptance rates up to 82%. Critically, we identify concern-acceptance conflict—reviewers frequently flag integrity issues yet assign acceptance-level scores. Our mitigation strategies show only marginal improvements, with detection accuracy barely exceeding random chance. Despite provably sound aggregation mathematics, integrity checking systematically fails, exposing fundamental limitations in current AI-driven review systems and underscoring the urgent need for defense-in-depth safeguards in scientific publishing.

Uncertainty-Aware Routing for Principled Alignment with MoE Dynamics

Yilong Chen, Junyuan Shang Baidu, Yuchen Feng, Zhenyu Zhang Baidu Inc., Naibin Gu, Ziqi Wang, Tingwen Liu Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shuohuan Wang Baidu 等 11 位作者

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) is a cornerstone for scaling LLMs, yet its training dynamics remain poorly understood, often leading to sub-optimal specialization. Moving beyond static routing, we present a systematic study of the MoE lifecycle using Helmholtz Free Energyand Router Entropy. We identify a universal Three-Stage Phase Transition—Exploration, Symmetry Breaking, and Stabilization—marked by an Energy Climb and Plateau. This reflects Frustrated Exploration, caused by structural interference between specialization drives and uniformity constraints. To address this, we propose Uncertainty-Aware Routing (UAR), which aligns routing with the model’s epistemic state via: (1) Evidence-Triggered Expansion, increasing active experts for high-energy tokens, and (2) Epistemic Masking, applying load-balancing only in high-uncertainty regimes to shield mature experts. Experiments confirm UAR reduces perplexity and improves expert distinctiveness, offering a principled path toward thermodynamically aligned computation.
