PhySA: Decoupling Aesthetic and Physical Rewards for Humanoid Locomotion

Yunwan Fu, Sicheng He, Jiageng Mao, Yue Wang

原文摘要

Humanoid locomotion policies trained without an explicit smoothness objective tend to produce jerky, high-energy gaits that stress actuators. Vision-language models (VLMs) offer an appealing reward source: given a rendered rollout, a VLM returns an aesthetic quality score on [0,10] without task-specific feature engineering. We find, however, that aesthetic preference and physical smoothness point in opposite directions: across four production VLMs, clips with higher joint acceleration receive higher aesthetic scores (mean Pearson r=+0.66). We study PhySA (Physical Smoothness and Aesthetics), which keeps the two on separate, independently removable reward channels: a sparse, asynchronous VLM score and a phase-triggered correction channel that adjusts physical penalty weights from simulator state. Ablations attribute the smoothness gain to the correction channel. On MuJoCo Humanoid-v5 at 2.6M steps, PhySA lowers joint acceleration by 26 to 32% relative to vanilla PPO, Text2Reward, and Eureka (three seeds), at the cost of shorter episodes. In a single extended run it lowers joint acceleration by 59.5% relative to Prompt2Policy, while a three-seed replication shows a smaller, non-significant reduction (7.2%). The gain does not transfer to IsaacLab or the Unitree G1, even after rescaling the smoothness term.

原文摘要

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have shown strong potential in robotic surgery for question answering, scene understanding, and grounded assistance, but their high computational cost limits real clinical deployment. Knowledge distillation provides a practical way to build compact surgical MLLMs, yet direct distillation is not well suited to surgical data because surgical samples vary greatly in difficulty, visual ambiguity, and required clinical context, making uniform teacher-student transfer unstable. In addition, the role of supervision changes during training: early stages require stronger teacher guidance for multimodal alignment, while later stages rely more on task supervision for effective optimization. To address these challenges, we propose SurgPace, a complexity-aware continuous curriculum framework for progressive distillation of surgical vision-language models. SurgPace estimates sample complexity using predictive confidence and Lorentz geometric consistency, and uses the fused score to guide a continuous easy-to-hard training process. We further introduce hierarchical representation alignment, which aligns the student with the teacher at the feature, logit, and probability levels, while gradually shifting the training focus from teacher imitation to task supervision. This design separates sample-level curriculum from objective-level scheduling, leading to more stable and effective distillation. We evaluate SurgPace on Surg-396K, a benchmark built from four public surgical datasets and covering five dialogue paradigms. SurgPace consistently outperforms strong MLLM distillation baselines, demonstrating its effectiveness for building compact, memory-efficient surgical MLLMs with faster decoding under controlled benchmarks. InteractionBench: Measuring Timing, Task Accuracy, Whisper and Volume, and Grounding in Real-Time Voice Systems

Richard Yucheng He, Chen Xu, Yihang Liu, Tairan Chen, Baodong Cao

原文摘要

Most benchmarks for real-time voice systems focus on one aspect, such as turn-taking, instruction following, paralinguistic control, or conversational memory, each with its own data and set of systems. We present InteractionBench, a benchmark and evaluation harness that measures four dimensions on the same systems from the same recorded user audio: conversational timing, spoken-task accuracy, whisper and volume, and groundedness in conversations of more than twenty turns. The benchmark contains 221 items per system in thirteen scenarios. Before any system runs, we fix the expected floor-control actions for spoken tasks by rule and take the expected answers from scripted dialogues. We score whispering from the audio signal. We evaluate GPT-Live, GPT-Realtime, Gemini Live, Moshi, PersonaPlex, Freeze-Omni, and a turn-based cascade in 1,519 graded runs. Among the six full-duplex systems, timing and spoken-task accuracy are rank-correlated ($ρ= 0.83$), while the cascade has the highest spoken-task score (38/50) and the second-lowest timing score. No system corrects a user's grammar within the required window. Only Gemini Live whispers on most requests (8/10). Hosted systems pass 67-88% of groundedness probes, compared with 14-35% for open full-duplex models. Timing is measured where the client hears each system, so the timing of hosted systems includes network delay: for GPT-Live, whose server reports its own clock, removing a delay of about 1.5 s lowers its timing score from 86% to 56%. We also document where the protocol differs across systems, including the text instructions.

Reinforcement World Model Learning for LLM-based Agents

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved strong performance in language-centric tasks. However, in agentic settings, LLMs often struggle to anticipate action consequences and adapt to environment dynamics, highlighting the need for world-modeling capabilities in LLM-based agents. We propose Reinforcement World Model Learning (RWML), a self-supervised method that learns action-conditioned world models for LLM-based agents on textual states using sim-to-real gap rewards. Our method aligns simulated next states produced by the model with realized next states observed from the environment, encouraging consistency between internal world simulations and actual environment dynamics in a pre-trained embedding space. Unlike next-state token prediction, which prioritizes token-level fidelity (i.e., reproducing exact wording) over semantic equivalence and can lead to model collapse, our method provides a more robust training signal and is empirically less susceptible to reward hacking than LLM-as-a-judge. We evaluate our method on ALFWorld and $τ^2$ Bench and observe significant gains over the base model, despite using no expert data, task-success rewards, or strong-LLM annotations - only an off-the-shelf embedding model as a distance metric. When combined with task-success rewards, our method outperforms direct task-success reward RL by 6.9 and 5.7 points on ALFWorld and $τ^2$ Bench respectively; it further outperforms expert-data training on ALFWorld and is comparable to it on $τ^2$ Bench.

原文摘要

Developing seamless, high-performance, native intelligent full-duplex Spoken Language Models (SLMs) remains a critical challenge and long-standing goal for the speech and NLP community. Despite notable progress, recent endeavors are fundamentally constrained by severe modality interference, which causes substantial knowledge degradation and compromises semantic integrity -- ultimately making full-duplex SLMs feel unnatural and unintelligent. In this paper, through an exhaustive fine-grained analysis of model optimization dynamics, we uncover the root cause of such performance degradation, revealing that modality interference arises from inherent gradient conflicts between acoustic and semantic modeling when the two modalities are forced to share a deep parameter space. Guided by this key insight, we introduce Lychee-FD, a native end-to-end full-duplex framework designed to mitigate modality interference. Importantly, we propose a hierarchical parameter separation strategy that decouples conflicting modalities in deep layers while preserving cross-modality coherence via a dedicated semantic alignment channel. Extensive experiments on multiple full-duplex benchmarks demonstrate that our method significantly advances the state of the art, yielding substantial improvements in both speech intelligence (+7.4% on Spoken QA) and full-duplex interaction fluidity (+28.5% on FullDuplexBench 1.5) without compromising inference efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to achieve two key advances: 1) uncovering and elucidating the root cause of modality interference in full-duplex SLMs, and 2) designing an elegant hierarchical model together with a practical solution for seamless, high-performance, native intelligent full-duplex SLMs.

Morphological Decoupling-Based Skeletal Classification for Clinical Assessment of Malocclusion

原文摘要

Malocclusion skeletal grading is a fundamental task in orthodontics, critical for diagnosis and treatment planning. Traditionally, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is used for visual measurement, and the reconstructed lateral cephalograms are handed over to expert dentists for diagnosis. However, manual review is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and subject to inter-operator variability. Therefore, an automatic CBCT-based system is needed for reliable malocclusion skeletal grading. In this case, we develop TeethGNN, a novel graph-based framework designed to combine CBCT image features with morphological information for accurate and efficient malocclusion grading. TeethGNN utilizes a decoupled learnable decoder to directly predict key morphological indicators from CBCT images, eliminating the need for manual measurements. These morphological features are then fused with image features using a graph neural network (GNN), which effectively models the relationships between the modalities. To further enhance robustness and calibration, we introduce a collaborative calibration strategy. This strategy combines multi-scale graph adversarial perturbation for explicit calibration and nonlinear topological graph calibration for implicit confidence adjustment. Extensive experiments and ablation studies on our collected clinical dataset demonstrate that our malocclusion measurement system achieves 77.08\% in accuracy and 89.61\% in AUC, outperforming the compared state-of-the-art methods. These results validate the effectiveness of graph-based multimodal fusion and collaborative calibration in improving malocclusion grading performance. Our system shows strong potential for advancing computer-aided orthodontic diagnosis, providing an accurate and reliable solution for vision-based clinical measurement and diagnosis.

RankFormer: Rethinking Time Series Transformers through Representation Capacity Analysis and Progressive Decoding

Peiwang Tang, Cheng HE, Xijie Liang, Defu Lian

原文摘要

Multivariate time series forecasting plays a critical role in Web and cyber-physical systems, where large-scale services and IoT infrastructures generate complex temporal data. Transformer-based models have achieved strong empirical performance in this domain, yet the principles governing the expressive capacity of their learned representations remain insufficiently understood. Moreover, many existing models rely on simplified decoding strategies, including channel-independent modeling and direct projection heads, which limit their ability to capture complex multivariate dynamics. To address these challenges, we propose RankFormer, a novel encoder-decoder architecture for multivariate time series forecasting. We establish a rank-based analysis framework to investigate how tokenization, embedding, and attention designs affect the representation capacity of time series Transformers. Our analysis reveals that patchification increases the potential representation capacity by aggregating multiple temporal observations into each token, while subsequent encoding operations determine how much of this capacity is realized. Guided by these insights, we develop a rank-enhancing encoder with Hourglass Attention to improve rank stability during information interaction. Furthermore, we introduce the Interactive Progressive Decoder (IPD), which improves future trajectory modeling through global-guided cross-channel interaction and progressive refinement. Extensive experiments on real-world long-term forecasting benchmarks demonstrate that RankFormer achieves competitive performance against state-of-the-art methods. Learning from Points and Patches: A Pre-trained Hybrid Attention Transformer for Time Series Analysis

Peiwang Tang, Cheng HE, Yupeng Ye, Weitai Zhang, Qinghua Sun, Defu Lian

原文摘要

Time-series data generated by Web services and connected systems support applications such as user activity analysis, service monitoring, and resource management. However, learning transferable representations from heterogeneous time series remains challenging due to diverse temporal patterns, variable sequence lengths, and limited high-quality annotations. Despite the success of pre-training in natural language processing and computer vision, effective time-series pre-training requires strategies tailored to temporal data. We propose TimeHAT (Hybrid Attention Transformer), a general-purpose pre-training framework for time-series analysis that addresses two complementary questions: what to learn and how to learn. For what to learn, we introduce a Unified Point-Patch Masking Strategy (UPPMS) that integrates point-level and patch-level supervision within a unified framework for contextual reconstruction and causal extrapolation, enabling the model to capture both fine-grained temporal variations and broader temporal patterns. For how to learn, we develop a Hybrid Attention Encoder (HAE) that combines prefix-constrained bidirectional attention in initial layers with directional hybrid attention in deeper layers, aiming to preserve effective contextual interactions while mitigating rank degeneration. We evaluate TimeHAT across real-world datasets and four downstream tasks: classification, long-term forecasting, imputation, and anomaly detection. Experiments cover fine-tuning, few-shot, and zero-shot transfer settings, demonstrating competitive performance across diverse time-series analysis tasks. Code is available at https://github.com/TangPeiwang/TimeHAT.

原文摘要

Recent advances in unified multimodal models indicate a clear trend towards comprehensive content generation. However, the auditory domain remains a significant challenge, with music and speech often developed in isolation, hindering progress towards universal audio synthesis. This separation stems from inherent task conflicts between semantic speech and structural music modeling, and severe data imbalances, which impede the development of a truly unified model. To address these challenges, we propose UniMoE-Audio a unified speech and music generation model built upon a novel Dynamic-Capacity Mix-of-Experts (DCMoE) framework. Architecturally, UniMoE-Audio extends the conventional MoE paradigm by introducing a Top-P routing strategy for adaptive capacity allocation. To tackle data imbalance, we introduce a three-stage training curriculum: 1) Independent Specialist Training leverages original datasets to instill domain-specific knowledge into each specialists without interference; 2) MoE Integration and Warmup incorporates these specialists into the UniMoE-Audio architecture, warming up the gate module and shared expert using a subset of balanced dataset; and 3) Synergistic Joint Training trains the entire model end-to-end on the fully balanced dataset, fostering enhanced cross-domain synergy. Extensive experiments show that UniMoE-Audio not only achieves state-of-the-art performance on major speech and music generation benchmarks, but also demonstrates superior synergistic learning, mitigating the performance degradation typically seen in naive joint training. Our findings highlight the substantial potential of specialized MoE architecture and curated training strategies in advancing universal audio generation.
