Recent Hypergraph-based retrieval-augmented generation (HyperRAG) methods use hyper edges to connect multiple entities simultaneously, enabling more efficient multi-entity evidence organization than pairwise graph structures. However, existing HyperRAG methods often rely on LLM-generated summaries to construct hyperedges, which can introduce hallucinations while also incurring high indexing costs. In addition, during retrieval, existing methods typically rely on either one-hop neighbor expansion or PageRank diffusion. The former may miss useful multi-hop evidence, while the latter can suffer from uncontrolled propagation over excessive hub nodes, leading to semantic drift and noisy reasoning chains. To address these challenges, we propose HyperSU, a novel hypergraph-based RAG framework featuring semantic-unit hyperedges and clue guided bidirectional retrieval. During construction, HyperSU formulates hyperedge construction as an entity-aware minimum-description length (MDL) optimization problem, inducing source-grounded semantic-unit hyperedges that balance sentence-level semantic coherence and entity compactness. It then constructs a hypergraph by modeling each semantic unit as a hyperedge over its co-mentioned entities. During retrieval, HyperSU performs clue-guided bidirectional expansion over the semantic-unit hypergraph, enabling both multi-hop evidence discovery and evidence-anchored noise reduction. Experiments show that HyperSU consistently improves answer accuracy over standard, graph-based, and hypergraph-based RAG baselines, raising average accuracy on GraphRAG Bench by 5.5 points over the strongest baseline (68.7 vs. 63.2), with larger gains on reasoning intensive tasks, where the relative improvement reaches 14.1%.

Efficient preconditioning plays an important role in large-scale first-order optimization. In this paper, we propose an adaptive accelerated optimistic dual averaging ($\text{A}^2$ODA) method for unconstrained convex optimization that adopts low-cost preconditioning based on $p$-norm geometry for $p\in[2,\infty]$. The method is line-search-free and employs a new stepsize selection technique based on an aggregated affine lower model. Its update structure is simple and unified across $p\in[2,\infty]$, with the case $p>2$ requiring no more elaborate updates than the Euclidean case $p=2$. Under a generalized local smoothness condition, we derive a convergence bound that separates the effects of constant and gap-dependent curvature, with the latter potentially yielding faster-decaying terms. In the special case of local smoothness, this bound recovers a nearly optimal convergence rate.

Low-precision training often relies on stochastic rounding (SR) to keep quantized gradients unbiased and prevent small updates from rounding to zero. Standard SR draws an independent random threshold for every gradient element. However, accelerators generate random numbers on vector units whose throughput lags far behind their matrix units. Drawing one threshold per element saturates the vector unit and can make INT8 training with SR slower than BF16 training. Sharing random thresholds across tensor elements removes this cost but forces those elements to round in the same direction and shifts their rounding errors by a common offset. We find that this offset degrades training primarily through the activation gradient, which propagates the error backward into earlier layers. Because earlier layers cannot cancel an incoming offset using their own local rounding errors, the offset must be removed at the layer where it originates. We propose Structured Subspace Stochastic Rounding (S3R), which quantizes each upstream gradient once for both the activation and weight gradient matrix multiplications and shares a single threshold per token across the hidden dimension. Its error correction, S3R-EC, subtracts the structured mean rounding error from the activation and weight gradients while leaving the optimizer unchanged. In LLM pre-training experiments, uncorrected threshold sharing degrades convergence, whereas S3R-EC eliminates this degradation and matches the validation loss of independent SR. Furthermore, S3R-EC accelerates full INT8 training steps of dense LLMs on TPU v5p by 1.24x to 1.32x over BF16 and by 1.11x over independent SR.
