CropReward: A Human-Preference Benchmark and Reward Model for Aesthetic Image Cropping

Xiangfei Sheng, Xiaofeng Pan, Leida Li, Qian Zhang, Biao Wang, Johan Wagemans, Weisi Lin

Aesthetic image cropping (AIC) aims to improve image composition and aesthetic quality by removing extraneous or distracting content. Over the past decade, AIC methods have evolved from specialized vision models to multimodal large language models(MLLMs). Reliable evaluation that reflects human preferences is essential for benchmarking AIC methods and guiding model optimization. However, the current AIC evaluation relies largely on geometry-based metrics such as intersection over union (IoU), as well as image aesthetic assessment(IAA) models. Although inconsistencies with human preferences have long been observed, the robustness and reliability of these evaluation criteria remain underexplored. To bridge this gap, we first construct CropBench, a large-scale benchmark comprising 106,995 human preference pairs for 1,019 images, with each candidate set containing the original image and candidate crops produced by 14 AIC methods. A systematic study on CropBench reveals that the existing criteria, ranging from IoU to off-the-shelf IAA assessment models, only exhibit limited alignment with human preferences. Building upon CropBench, we further propose CropReward, an MLLM-based reward model that evaluates a candidate crop by comparing with the original uncropped image and outputs a score indicating explicit aesthetic improvement or degradation relative to the original. In addition, we employ CropReward to construct CropReward-300k, the largest AIC dataset to date, and further develop CropAlign, a preference-aligned AIC model trained solely with CropReward supervision, without human-annotated crop boxes. Experimental results demonstrate that CropReward aligns with human preferences significantly better than AIC existing criteria. CropAlign also surpasses the state-of-the-art AIC methods, demonstrating the advantage of CropReward in guiding AIC model optimization.

Chimera: Neuro-Symbolic Attention Primitives for Trustworthy Dataplane Intelligence

Rong Fu, Xiaowen Ma, Kun Liu, Wangyu Wu, Ziyu Kong, Jia Yee Tan, Tailong Luo, Xianda Li 等 10 位作者

Deploying expressive learning models directly on programmable dataplanes promises line-rate, low-latency traffic analysis but remains hindered by strict hardware constraints and the need for predictable, auditable behavior. Chimera introduces a principled framework that maps attention-oriented neural computations and symbolic constraints onto dataplane primitives, enabling trustworthy inference within the match-action pipeline. Chimera combines a kernelized, linearized attention approximation with a two-layer key-selection hierarchy and a cascade fusion mechanism that enforces hard symbolic guarantees while preserving neural expressivity. The design includes a hardware-aware mapping protocol and a two-timescale update scheme that together permit stable, line-rate operation under realistic dataplane budgets. The paper presents the Chimera architecture, a hardware mapping strategy, and empirical evidence showing that neuro-symbolic attention primitives can achieve high-fidelity inference within the resource envelope of commodity programmable switches.

zkCraft: Prompt-Guided LLM as a Zero-Shot Mutation Pattern Oracle for TCCT-Powered ZK Fuzzing

Rong Fu, Jia Yee Tan, Ziyu Kong, Shuning Zhang, Xianda Li, Kun Liu, Simon Fong

Zero-knowledge circuits enable privacy-preserving and scalable systems but are difficult to implement correctly due to the tight coupling between witness computation and circuit constraints. We present zkCraft, a practical framework that combines deterministic, R1CS-aware localization with proof-bearing search to detect semantic inconsistencies. zkCraft encodes candidate constraint edits into a single Row-Vortex polynomial and replaces repeated solver queries with a Violation IOP that certifies the existence of edits together with a succinct proof. Deterministic LLM-driven mutation templates bias exploration toward edge cases while preserving auditable algebraic verification. Evaluation on real Circom code shows that proof-bearing localization detects diverse under- and over-constrained faults with low false positives and reduces costly solver interaction. Our approach bridges formal verification and automated debugging, offering a scalable path for robust ZK circuit development.

Autonomous Quantum Measurement with Agentic AI

Eunbi Rha, Abhijatmedhi Chotrattanapituk, Mouyang Cheng, Chung-tao Chou, Shenyong Ye, Ashley S. Dale, Long Ju, Luqiao Liu 等 9 位作者

Quantum materials exhibit diverse electronic and functional phenomena, but their characterization requires extensive experimental expertise, iterative decision-making and accumulated laboratory knowledge that is difficult to document and transfer. Here we introduce Quantum Agent (QUANTA), an agentic artificial intelligence (AI) framework for autonomous quantum-materials characterization. Using a widely adopted Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) as an experimental platform, QUANTA combines retrieval augmentation using scientific literature, experimental protocols and prior measurements with specialized agents for experimental planning, troubleshooting, and data interpretation. A separate deterministic control layer validates instrument actions. Guided by incoming data, QUANTA evaluates measurement quality, revises experimental plans and selects subsequent measurements. We demonstrate these capabilities through transport measurements of the topological Weyl semimetal TaP, as well as investigations of nonlinear responses in magnetic material Co2MnGa. These results establish QUANTA as a generalizable framework for evidence-driven, safeguarded and closed-loop quantum-materials characterization.

We introduce Nemotron 3.5 Super and Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, open and efficient Mixture-of-Experts Hybrid Mamba-Transformer models designed for reasoning, long-context understanding, and agentic workloads. Super is a 120B-parameter, 12B-active multimodal model, while Lightning is a smaller 30B-parameter, 3B-active text model; both designed for efficient deployment. Both models combine large-scale distillation, long-context training, and native speculative decoding, while Super further incorporates Indic continued pretraining and agentic software-engineering mid-training. We develop a comprehensive post-training pipeline spanning supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning (RLVR and RLHF), complemented in Super by specialized teacher training and multi- teacher on-policy distillation (MOPD). This transforms Super from a text-only base model into a multimodal agent capable of reasoning over text, images, video, and interactive tool environments. We further explore test-time scaling through parallel agent execution and self-verification. Across training and deployment, we jointly optimize capability and efficiency. Indic continued pretraining improves Indian-language benchmarks by up to 9.82 percentage points, while agentic mid-training strengthens software-engineering capabilities and robustness across agent harnesses. The post-trained Super model achieves 51.78% on SWE-bench Pro, surpassing Nemotron 3 Ultra despite using approximately 4.6x fewer active parameters. Post-training MTP boosting improves speculative- decoding acceptance length by up to 21.8% under probabilistic draft sampling, while NVFP4 quantization achieves 99.62% median accuracy recovery relative to BF16. Inference optimizations enable up to 4,856 output tokens/s/GPU on GB200 while sustaining at least 50 tokens/s/user.

SplatScout: Query-Driven Part-Level Referring Segmentation in Gaussian Scenes

Yihan Zang, Da Li, Shinkyu Park, Ivan Viola, Dominik Engel

Existing referring segmentation methods on Gaussian scenes primarily target whole objects, relying on segmenter-generated candidates from which a vision-language model (VLM) selects. Such predetermined fixed candidates may omit fine-grained parts needed as targets or cues for identifying objects. We introduce SplatScout, a query-driven, closed-loop approach that places perception under VLM control. The model actively selects views, directs segmentation, and inspects rendered 3D results to refine its predictions. For part-level evaluation, we introduce PartRef-ScanNet++, comprising 261 manually verified queries across 12 ScanNet++ scenes with mesh-derived ground truth. On PartRef-ScanNet++, SplatScout achieves 0.538 mIoU, substantially outperforming existing methods. Ablations demonstrate the benefits of iterative refinement, while comparisons across VLM backbones highlight the importance of effective tool-feedback utilization. SplatScout also achieves higher scores on four existing referring benchmarks. Code and the PartRef-ScanNet++ benchmark are available at https://github.com/kaust-violab/SplatScout.

LingGS: Decoupling Feed-Forward Geometry Prediction from Camera Tracking for High-Fidelity Gaussian SLAM

Da Li, Yihan Zang, Ivan Viola, Zeyu Wang, Dominik Engel

Achieving high-quality reconstruction and responsive camera tracking remains challenging for monocular RGB Gaussian splatting SLAM under a limited optimization budget. We present an online system that addresses this challenge by combining learned geometric priors with explicit geometric camera tracking, which can substantially outperform learned camera prediction in terms of tracking accuracy. A frozen streaming 3D foundation model serves as a virtual RGB-D sensor, providing depth estimation from monocular video. An explicit geometric solver then estimates camera motion through feature reprojection, and a streaming Gaussian mapper integrates the resulting observations into a dense scene representation. We further show that geometric tracking improves camera pose accuracy across representative streaming geometry backbones, demonstrating the broader applicability of our approach. Extensive experiments on indoor and outdoor datasets show that our method significantly improves reconstruction quality over existing approaches, achieving about 7 FPS on a single RTX 4090 and delivering 2-3 times the throughput of the evaluated prior SLAM systems.

AWARE: Action-Entropy-Weighted and Attention-Guided Retrieval of Observation Evidence for Vision-Language-Action Models

Jiabing Yang, Yixiang Chen, Yuan Xu, Peiyan Li, Zichen Wen, Bowen Fang, Chenhang Cui, Tao Yu 等 16 位作者

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models combine multimodal perception with robotic control, demonstrating remarkable potential for generalizable manipulation. Yet, enhancing their execution typically relies on auxiliary sensory inputs (e.g., depth, 3D point clouds) or costly fine-tuning. Inspired by the insight that Feed-Forward Networks (FFNs) act as key-value memory, we propose Action-Entropy-Weighted and Attention-Guided Retrieval of Observation Evidence (AWARE), an effective, training-free, and plug-and-play module for VLAs. Specifically, AWARE tracks layer-wise uncertainty via an element-wise Action Entropy metric, and retrieves observation evidence into the element's FFN through associative memory lookup. Crucially, the retrieved features are weighted by instruction-guided cross-modal attention to isolate task-relevant observation cues, while injection strength is adaptively scaled by the element's entropy and relative network depth. This selectively channels observation evidence to high-entropy action dimensions and deep layers where grounding decays, while leaving converged representations intact. Across LIBERO, SIMPLER, CALVIN, and real-world robot manipulation, AWARE consistently improves diverse VLA architectures with minimal computational overhead, achieving the largest gains on long-horizon tasks without architectural changes or additional training. Dynamical coarse-graining of neural-network training

Lin-Juan Wang, Da Li, Huiling Duan, Jianxiang Wang

Dynamical coarse-graining of neural networks gives macroscopic observables and enables training to be predicted, and controlled in a state space far smaller than the parameter space. In this paper, we first define the learning operator following the training law of neural networks and establish a descent theorem for the learning operator, which serves to determine whether the operator is sufficient to characterize the learning dynamics. Then the exact closure theorem and the dynamic coarse-graining theorem are presented in sequence. The three theorems established in this paper provide a systematic framework for constructing and assessing dynamical coarse-grained models of neural-network training. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the theorems with a finite-width nonlinear ReLU network. Its dynamic coarse-grained model for a fixed pattern is exactly derived and composed of five independent moments. The model exactly predict the training outputs and evolving learning operator. The framework may also guide the development of approximate coarse-grained models for more general neural networks when exact closure is unavailable.

VISTA: Differentiable Viewpoint Planning for Long-Horizon Task Visualization

Donggang Jia, Da Li, Zainab Alsuwaykit, Sebastian Hartwig, Dominik Engel, Timo Ropinski, Ivan Viola

Long-horizon object-centered tasks in interactive 3D environments involve heterogeneous events that unfold across time and space, including fine-grained manipulations, larger structural motions, and subtle state transitions. Effectively visualizing such processes is essential for helping users understand how actions lead to outcomes over time. However, existing camera control methods in 3D systems are commonly designed for static objects, and often fail to maintain the legibility of task-relevant components and their evolving relationships throughout long-horizon executions. We present VISTA, a differentiable viewpoint planning framework for long-horizon task visualization. We formulate camera control as a visualization policy that optimizes camera parameters under a unified rendering-based quality objective and we propose five quality metrics to satisfy our five design goals. To support both local part inspection and interaction-centric visualization centered on a primary object, our formulation handles targets defined either as object--part pairs or as relational tuples involving another interacting object. This allows the planner to reveal not only what part is important, but also how it functionally relates to surrounding structures during task execution. We demonstrate that the same planner supports two complementary use cases: presentation-driven narrative visualization for communicating how long-horizon tasks unfold to human viewers, and agent-driven active observation within an observe-act loop. Together, these results position differentiable viewpoint planning as a general mechanism for ``how-things-work'' visualization of long-horizon object-centered interactions in 3D environments.

Compressing then Matching: An Efficient Pre-training Paradigm for Multimodal Embedding

Da Li, Yuxiao Luo, Keping Bi Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiafeng Guo Institute of Computing Technolgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wei Yuan Kuaishou- 快手科技, Biao Yang, Yan Wang, Fan Yang Kuaishou- 快手科技 等 10 位作者

Multimodal Large Language Models advance multimodal representation learning by acquiring transferable semantic embeddings, thereby substantially enhancing performance across a range of vision-language tasks, including cross-modal retrieval, clustering, and classification. An effective embedding is expected to comprehensively preserve the semantic content of the input while simultaneously emphasizing features that are discriminative for downstream tasks. Recent approaches demonstrate that MLLMs can be adapted into competitive embedding models via large-scale contrastive learning, enabling the simultaneous optimization of two complementary objectives. We argue that the two aforementioned objectives can be decoupled: a comprehensive understanding of the input enables the embedding model to achieve superior performance on downstream tasks via contrastive learning. In this paper, we propose CoMa, a compressed pre-training phase, which serves as a warm-up stage for contrastive learning. Experiments demonstrate that with only a small amount of pre-training data, we can transform an MLLM into a competitive embedding model. CoMa achieves new state-of-the-art results among MLLMs of comparable size on the MMEB, realizing optimization in both efficiency and effectiveness. Our project is available at https://github.com/Trustworthy-Information-Access/CoMa.

Characterizing the Expressivity of Local Attention in Transformers

Jiaoda Li, Ryan Cotterell

The transformer is the most popular neural architecture for language modeling. The cornerstone of the transformer is its global attention mechanism, which lets the model aggregate information from all preceding tokens before generating the next token. One common variant of attention is called local attention, which restricts each token to aggregating information from a bounded window of predecessors, reducing the quadratic cost of global attention to linear. Although this restriction is usually motivated by efficiency, it has also been found to improve model quality, a phenomenon that has so far lacked a satisfactory explanation. We provide a formal account of this phenomenon in terms of recognizer expressivity. It has been shown that fixed-precision transformers with global attention correspond to a fragment of linear temporal logic containing a single past operator. We additionally prove that adding local attention introduces a second temporal operator, strictly enlarging the class of recognizable regular languages. Moreover, global and local attention are expressively complementary: neither subsumes the other, and combining them yields the richest fragment. Experiments on formal language recognition and natural language modeling corroborate the theory, showing that hybrid global–local transformers outperform their global-only counterparts.

VIGIL: Defending LLM Agents Against Tool-Stream Injection via Verify-Before-Commit

Junda Lin, Zhaomeng Zhou, Zhi Zheng University of Science and Technology of China, Shuochen Liu University of Science and Technology of China, Tong Xu University of Science and Technology of China, Yong Chen University of Science and Technology of China, Enhong Chen University of Science and Technology of China

LLM agents operating in open environments face escalating risks from indirect prompt injection, particularly within the tool stream where manipulated metadata and runtime feedback hijack execution flow. Existing defenses encounter a critical dilemma as advanced models prioritize injected rules due to strict alignment while static protection mechanisms sever the feedback loop required for adaptive reasoning. To reconcile this conflict, we propose VIGIL, a framework that shifts the paradigm from restrictive isolation to a verify-before-commit protocol. By facilitating speculative hypothesis generation and enforcing safety through intent-grounded verification, VIGIL preserves reasoning flexibility while ensuring robust control. We further introduce SIREN, a benchmark comprising 959 tool stream injection cases designed to simulate pervasive threats characterized by dynamic dependencies. Extensive experiments demonstrate that VIGIL outperforms state-of-the-art dynamic defenses by reducing the attack success rate by over 22% while more than doubling the utility under attack compared to static baselines, thereby achieving an optimal balance between security and utility. Our code is available at: https://github.com/Touring-686/vigil.
