Consistent yet Contextual: Learning Author-Level Mixtures of Style for Authorship Attribution

Omkar Yadav, Michael Jiang, Kenan Alkiek, Jian Zhu, David Jurgens

原文摘要

Approaches to authorship verification or attribution typically model the style of a document, asking whether two documents were likely written by the same author. While recent approaches have been performant, such approaches largely ignore modeling the authors themselves and how varied their style is. Here, we introduce multiple alternatives for modeling the author and demonstrate that allowing an author's representation to capture multiple consistent but distinct writing styles yields significant performance improvements. Using our new authorship model, we then examine when an author writes in a way that is most idiomatic of their style across four scenarios: (i) variation in the size of their writing audiences, (ii) temporal distance from when the model was trained, (iii) the effect of preceding context, and (iv) the effect of genre norms on style. Across all four experiments, we demonstrate that authors vary substantially in how idiolectic their writing is. Our results have clear implications for both the modeling and data used for authorship verification and attribution, showing that authors need to be represented with their multiple styles and that some settings produce text that is much more informative about who wrote that text.

Potato 2.0: A Comprehensive Annotation Platform with AI-in-the-Loop Support

David Jurgens University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, Michael Chen, Lina Iyer

原文摘要

Annotated data remains essential for training and evaluating NLP systems. Large language models have broadened the kinds of data researchers need, including multimodal and agentic system data. Here, we introduce Potato 2.0, a major update to our open source annotation platform designed for easy deployment, customization, and fully reproducible and shareable annotation designs. Potato offers broad support for many types of annotations in NLP, including 39 different types of annotation tasks, support for text, audio, image, and video modalities, or mixtures thereof. Potato 2.0 includes robust support for labeling agentic system outputs through reading common trace formats, or live interaction and annotation with agents in multiple settings, such as chatting, web-browsing, and coding. Potato also includes multiple AI-assistance features to help annotators more easily label data. Finally, Potato introduces a new agentic AI-in-the-loop workflow where a single human annotator collaborates with an LLM through iterative prompt refinement, uncertainty-driven instance selection, and progressive autonomy—enabling efficient dataset creation without a large annotation team.

Modeling Annotator Disagreement with Demographic-Aware Experts and Synthetic Perspectives

Yinuo Xu, Veronica Derricks, Allison Earl University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, David Jurgens University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

原文摘要

We present an approach to modeling annotator disagreement in subjective NLP tasks through both architectural and data-centric innovations. Our model, DEM-MoE (Demographic-Aware Mixture of Experts), routes inputs to expert subnetworks based on annotator demographics, enabling it to better represent structured, group-level variation compared to prior models. DEM-MoE consistently performs competitively across demographic groups, and shows especially strong results on datasets with high annotator disagreement. To address sparse demographic coverage, we test whether LLM-generated synthetic annotations via zero-shot persona prompting can be used for data imputation. We show these synthetic judgments align moderately well with human annotations on our data and offer a scalable way to potentially enrich training data. We then propose and evaluate approaches for blending real and synthetic data using strategies tailored to dataset structure. We find that the optimal strategies depend on dataset structure. Together, these contributions improve the representation of diverse perspectives.
