When Vision Overrides Language: Evaluating and Mitigating Counterfactual Failures in VLAs

原文摘要

Vision-Language-Action models (VLAs) promise to ground language instructions in robot control, yet in practice often fail to follow language faithfully. When presented with instructions that lack strong scene-specific supervision, VLAs suffer from counterfactual failures: they act based on vision shortcuts induced by dataset biases, repeatedly executing well-learned behaviors and selecting objects frequently seen during training regardless of language intent. To support systematic study, we introduce LIBERO-CF, the first counterfactual benchmark for VLAs that evaluates language following capability by assigning alternative, feasible task instructions under the same LIBERO scene layouts. Our evaluation reveals that counterfactual failures are prevalent yet underexplored across state-of-the-art VLAs. To mitigate these failures, we propose Counterfactual Action Guidance (CAG), a simple yet effective dual-branch inference scheme that explicitly strengthens language conditioning in VLAs. CAG combines a standard VLA policy with a parallel language-unconditioned branch, amplifying the difference between their action predictions induced by language instructions. This design reduces reliance on vision shortcuts, improves robustness on counterfactual tasks, and requires neither additional demonstrations nor modifications to the base VLA architecture or its pretrained weights. Extensive experiments demonstrate consistent improvements across diverse VLAs. On LIBERO-CF, our training-free variant, TF-CAG, improves $π_{0.5}$ by 9.7% in language grounding and 3.6% in task success. When using a separate Vision-Action (VA) module, VA-CAG achieves larger gains of 15.5% and 8.5%, respectively. In real-world evaluations, VA-CAG improves language grounding by 9.4% and task success by 17.2% on average.

Bridging Low-Level Image Fusion and High-Level Semantic Understanding

原文摘要

Remote sensing image fusion and semantic interpretation are usually optimized separately, so reconstruction quality need not preserve downstream retrieval utility. We propose LANCE, which uses structured language as an explicit, indexable semantic state. A frozen vision-language model maps the input to a closed-vocabulary text record; a language-conditioned generator fuses the imagery; and a dense verifier with a differentiable continuous summarizer re-describes the output. Text-text consistency and anti-collapse contrastive text-mask losses with negative queries close the loop without dense annotations or VLM fine-tuning. A variational EM formulation yields a per-step contraction result under regularity assumptions, distinguishing semantic faithfulness from verifier overfitting. Across seven test sets on GF2, QuickBird, WorldView-III, and WorldView-II, LANCE improves reduced-scale reference metrics by up to 11.7% (median 2.1%) over the strongest learning baseline. Independent evaluation using a held-out VLM and a supervised aerial detector yields gains of +6.4 mAP and +0.072 open-vocabulary F1 over the closest competitor. Text perturbations, cross-verifier transfer, and pseudo-RGB ablations examine the mechanisms underlying these gains. The framework connects image fusion to verifiable semantic representations for multimodal retrieval and knowledge management.

Improving Hate Speech Detection by Fusing Textual and User Interaction Representations in Online Communities

Xu Gao, Dong Jing, Kee-hung Lai

原文摘要

Detecting hate speech in online communities is increasingly challenging due to the implicit and context-dependent nature of toxic expressions. While text-only models often struggle with such ambiguity, incorporating user interaction signals offers critical pragmatic context for disambiguation. However, research in this direction is hindered by the scarcity of datasets that align textual content with comprehensive user behavioral graphs. To bridge this gap, we present a new dataset collected from a real-world community, featuring labeled hate speech enriched with fine-grained interaction histories. We further propose a novel user-aware hate speech detection framework that effectively fuses textual semantics with social interaction representations. Experiments demonstrate that our approach consistently outperforms strong text-only baselines by over 3.6%, validating the critical role of social context in enhancing detection accuracy. Furthermore, to mitigate real-world adversarial risks such as graph spoofing and spam, we introduce a contrastive graph augmentation strategy, ensuring model robustness against unreliable community behaviors.
