Weight-Space Programming for Improving Image-Restoration Diffusion Models: Technical Conjectures and a Recursive Improvement Loop

Zhuoran Zheng, Doubao

原文摘要

Can an LLM directly edit the weights of a diffusion-based image-restoration model to \emph{improve} restoration quality---without gradients, paired data, or fine-tuning? Recent experiments show frontier LLMs can fix structural bugs by modifying as little as \(0.016\%\) of parameters, but cannot instill new capabilities. We ask whether weight-space programming (WSP) can move from \emph{debugging} to \emph{improvement} in the precise-regression setting of image restoration (deblurring, super-resolution, denoising, inpainting). Restoration diffusion UNets present a middle ground: low-level signal-processing layers are concentrated enough for targeted weight-direction edits, while high-level semantic layers remain distributed and resistant to sparse modification. We propose three technical conjectures: (C1) an LLM can localize the layer behind a quality gap (over-smoothing, color shift, hallucinated texture) within a 200 forward-pass budget; (C2) editing a small set of identified weight directions (e.g., scaling high-frequency filter norms, correcting output-bias channels) can measurably improve PSNR and perceptual quality; (C3) a recursive loop---diagnose \(\rightarrow\) edit \(\rightarrow\) evaluate \(\rightarrow\) re-diagnose---can compound gains across rounds, forming a minimal recursive self-improvement (RSI) loop for vision. We analyze the required AI capability (arguing targeted edits need not superintelligence, while general capability generation does) and detail the challenges of precise pixel-level regression. We provide a PyTorch-style deployment pipeline and outline a benchmark. This manuscript is conjectural, intended to open a new subtopic for image restoration.

IntentGEO: Intent-aware Generative Engine Optimization for Recommendation

Runlin Lei, Shiqi Zhang, Xiaokui Xiao, Zhewei Wei

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) increasingly shape recommendations across chatbots, e-commerce, and user-generated content (UGC) platforms, creating demand for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to improve item visibility in generated responses. Existing GEO studies are mainly content-centric, optimizing visibility under general-purpose queries. However, a shared item description usually serves users with different needs and decision goals, resulting in its visibility gains being dependent on the request. To investigate how changing intent affects visibility, we formulate IntentGEO to evaluate shared rewrites across need specificity and decision progression. We revisit existing GEO methods and find that their visibility gains vary across user intents. More critically, learning-based prompt optimization can underperform its handwritten seed on average. Tracing these updates reveals prompt drift from explicit recommendation instructions toward generic promotional tactics. To address this drift, we propose AMO (Anchored Meta-Optimization), which preserves recommendation instructions in a fixed core while learning appended strategies from citation feedback. Across four domains and ten intent states, AMO improves average citation-rank gain by 35% over the strongest prior learning-based baseline and leads on nine states. Ablations show that learned additions improve on the fixed core alone and that AMO outperforms full-prompt optimization initialized from that core. It also achieves the highest gains in an agentic recommendation pipeline and, after separate adaptation, on Doubao, a commercially deployed, closed-source online assistant. These findings highlight user intent as a key dimension of GEO evaluation and support anchored adaptation across recommendation needs and decision stages.

IceBreaker for Conversational Agents: Breaking the First-Message Barrier with Personalized Starters

原文摘要

Conversational agents, such as ChatGPT and Doubao, have become essential daily assistants for billions of users. To further enhance engagement, these systems are evolving from passive responders to proactive companions. However, existing efforts focus on activation within ongoing dialogues, while overlooking a key real-world bottleneck. In the conversation initiation stage, users may have a vague need but no explicit query intent, creating a first-message barrier where the conversation holds before it begins. To overcome this, we introduce Conversation Starter Generation: generating personalized starters to guide users into conversation. However, unlike in-conversation stages where immediate context guides the response, initiation must operate in a cold-start moment without explicit user intent. To pioneer in this direction, we present IceBreaker that frames human ice-breaking as a two-step handshake: (i) evoke resonance via Resonance-Aware Interest Distillation from session summaries to capture trigger interests, and (ii) stimulate interaction via Interaction-Oriented Starter Generation, optimized with personalized preference alignment and a self-reinforced loop to maximize engagement. Online A/B tests on one of the world’s largest conversational agent products show that IceBreaker improves user active days by +1.84‰ and click-through rate by +94.25‰, and has been deployed in production.

VisAidMath: Benchmarking Visual-Aided Mathematical Reasoning

原文摘要

A hallmark of advanced artificial intelligence is the capacity to progress from passive visual perception to the strategic modification of visual information to facilitate complex reasoning. This advanced capability, however, remains critically underdeveloped in current Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs). The deficiency is often masked by evaluation metrics that prioritize final-answer accuracy, creating an illusion of competence where genuine reasoning is absent. Using the domain of geometric problem-solving as a precise instrument, we probe this issue through tasks that require constructing visual aids.To this end, we introduce VisAidMath, a challenging benchmark, and our novel Three-Layered Funnel Evaluation Framework. This framework moves beyond simple accuracy (ACCU) to scrutinize the generation of valid visual aids (PVA) and the soundness of subsequent reasoning steps (SPRS). Our extensive experiments on state-of-the-art models, including Doubao-Seed-1.6 and o4, reveal a profound “Reasoning Illusion”. We observe that high surface-level accuracy conceals a catastrophic failure in the models’ ability to produce valid visual aids or to reason from them. Our findings expose a fundamental schism between visual perception and logical deduction in modern LMMs. We provide a public evaluation platform on CodaBench and release the project homepage.
