Stepwise Reasoning Verification: Don't Generate, Classify!

Yifei Shi, Michalis Korakakis, Rami Aly, Eric Chamoun, Lukasz Szpruch, Andreas Vlachos

原文摘要

Verifying the reasoning of large language models is increasingly important as they are applied to complex mathematical and scientific problems. Existing work focuses on large decoder models and reports mixed results for generative and discriminative verifiers, leaving unclear which paradigm is more effective and whether large models are necessary. In this work, we cast stepwise verification as a natural language inference task: the problem and partial solution prefix form the premise, while the next reasoning step serves as the hypothesis to be classified as entailed or non-entailed. This formulation enables error localisation at individual reasoning steps and direct comparison of encoder classification, decoder classification, and decoder verdict generation across model scales and annotation budgets. Across five reasoning datasets, a 0.15B encoder classifier outperforms most generative verifiers with up to 4B parameters. On identical decoder backbones, classification outperforms generation from 0.5B to 4B parameters and matches it on the strongest 7B backbone---reaching comparable performance with roughly one tenth as many annotated problems. Our findings establish classification as a parameter- and data-efficient approach to stepwise verification and show that strong verification does not require large generative decoders.

Low-rank MERA Decomposition of 3D OCT Image Volume for Compression, Denoising, Feature Extraction and Diagnosis of Retinal Diseases

原文摘要

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging modality used for visualization of retinal tissue. However, OCT volumes are affected by speckle noise, which degrades image contrast and obscures fine structural details. Furthermore, modern clinical practice requires large field-of-view, high-resolution OCT volumes, whose storage and transmission are demanding for archiving and teleophthalmology applications. To address aforementioned challenges, we propose a low-rank multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) tensor network approximation of 3D OCT image volume, where the image volume is represented as contractions of a top core factor encoding global features and multiple interacting low-rank orthogonal or semi-orthogonal factors modeling inter- and intra-B scan correlations. This representation jointly enables compression, denoising, and feature extraction. Unlike deep learning approaches, the proposed approach is training-free and processes each OCT volume independently. We evaluate the proposed framework on OCT image volumes acquired by two different scanners and demonstrate improved visual quality and reduced retinal layer segmentation errors in comparison with several competing methods. We also extract MERA features from two clinical OCT volume datasets. They are subsequently classified using a Grassmann-manifold nearest-subspace classifier. With the subspace dimension as its only hyperparameter, the classifier is theoretically shown to be robust in small-sample clinical scenario. We demonstrate competitive accuracy of classification of retinal diseases in these small-sample settings, where deep learning methods are often limited by the scarcity of labeled data. The proposed structure-aware model-driven representation learning for high-dimensional data under limited supervision provides good generalization performance while maintaining high interpretability.

UniVocal: Unified Speech-Singing Code-Switching Synthesis

原文摘要

We propose UniVocal, a unified framework that implicitly infers vocal modes from text context to pioneer Speech-Singing Code-Switching (SCS) Synthesis—a task where transitions are autonomously driven by textual semantics, akin to seamless human language blending. Unlike single-mode generation or systems relying on switching-control tags, our proposed UniVocal implicitly infers vocal modes solely from text context. To achieve this, we employ a data-efficient two-stage curriculum learning strategy that progressively trains a competitive TTS system to acquire the desired SCS capability. Addressing data scarcity, we introduce a scalable pipeline to synthesize diverse code-switching data that is both semantically and acoustically natural, alongside a new multi-scenario benchmark, SCSBench. To address limitations of semantic tokenizers in capturing acoustic details, we also introduce refined cent token and Chain-of-Thought (CoT) generation for planning prosody before content generation, effectively enhancing empathetic speech generation and singing melody. Experimental results demonstrate that UniVocal achieves state-of-the-art performance on SCSBench while maintaining competitive performance on regular speech and singing tasks. Audio samples are available at https://project-univocal-demo.github.io/demo/. The code and dataset are released at https://github.com/FunAudioLLM/FunResearch/tree/main/UniVocal.

All Languages Matter: Understanding and Mitigating Language Bias in Multilingual RAG

原文摘要

Multilingual Retrieval-Augmented Generation (mRAG) leverages cross-lingual evidence to ground Large Language Models (LLMs) in global knowledge. However, we show that current mRAG systems suffer from a language bias during reranking, systematically favoring English and the query’s native language. By introducing an estimated oracle evidence analysis, we quantify a substantial performance gap between existing rerankers and the achievable upper bound. Further analysis reveals a critical distributional mismatch: while optimal predictions require evidence scattered across multiple languages, current systems systematically suppress such “answer-critical” documents, thereby limiting downstream generation performance. To bridge this gap, we propose Language-Agnostic Utility-driven Reranker Alignment (LAURA), Experiments across diverse languages and generation models show that LAURA effectively mitigates language bias and consistently improves mRAG performance.
