Distributed Optimization Involving Non-Lipschitzian, Linear Composite Functions: Unified Algorithm Design and Convergence Analysis

Liang Ran, Huaqing Li, Lifeng Zheng, Jun Li, Run Tang

This paper formulates a generic distributed nonsmooth optimization problem subject to edge-based equality constraints, local inequality constraints characterized by general convex functions, as well as globally coupling constraints including affine equality and nonlinear inequality. The terminal goal is to minimize the sum of local non-differentiable convex functions and proximable nonsmooth convex composite terms attached to linear operators, over networked multi-agent systems. This formulated framework not only applies in complex practical problems but also reduces to existing distributed optimization structures. To cope with technical issues caused by local linear mappings, potential multiple nonsmooth functions and coupling nonlinear constraints, we first derive a new local first-order condition, and further present a novel fully distributed optimization algorithm based on variable decompositions and proximal operators. Specifically, the proposed algorithm allows each agent to update states via local information exchange and through {locally fixed step-sizes}, and to find inexact solutions of subproblems without loss of convergence speed. In contrast to existing tailor-made algorithms for the bounded gradients of objective functions or affine constraints, our algorithm is capable of solving more practical cases involving general convex functions and nonlinear constraints. Under mild assumptions, the convergence rate $o(1/k)$ in terms of the optimality and successive-difference metrics is achieved, by constructing the equivalent variational inequalities of the proposed algorithm. Finally, numerical experiments on practical application problems illustrate the theoretical results.

When Policy Entropy Constraint Fails: Preserving Diversity in Flow-based RLHF via Perceptual Entropy

Xiaofeng Tan, Jun Liu, Bin-Bin Gao, Yuanting Fan, Xi Jiang, Chengjie Wang, Hongsong Wang, Feng Zheng

RLHF is widely used to align flow-matching text-to-image models with human preferences, but often leads to severe diversity collapse after fine-tuning. In RL, diversity is often assumed to correlate with policy entropy, motivating entropy regularization. However, we show this intuition breaks in flow models: policy entropy remains constant, even while perceptual diversity collapses. We explain this mismatch both theoretically and empirically: the constant entropy arises from the fixed, pre-defined noise schedule, while the diversity collapse is driven by the mode-seeking nature of policy gradients. As a result, policy entropy fails to prevent the model from converging to a narrow high-reward region in the perceptual space. To this end, we introduce perceptual entropy that captures diversity in a perceptual space and maintains the property of standard entropy. Building upon this insight, we propose two entropy-regularized strategies, Perceptual Entropy Constraint and Perceptual Constraints on Generation Space, to preserve perceptual diversity and improve the quality. Experiments across two base models, neural and rule-based rewards, and three perceptual spaces demonstrate consistent gains in the quality-diversity trade-off; PEC achieves the best overall score of 0.734 (vs. baseline's 0.366); a complementary setting of PEC further reaches a diversity average of 0.989 (vs. baseline's 0.047). Our project page (https://xiaofeng-tan.github.io/projects/PEC) is publicly available.

Markov State-Space Modeling and Channel Characterization for DNA-Based Molecular Communication

Ruifeng Zheng, Zhihan Xu, Veronika Volkova, Pengjie Zhou, Martín Schottlender, Juan A. Cabrera, Frank H. P. Fitzek, Pit Hofmann

DNA-based molecular communication with microarray-style reception under reversible hybridization is of interest for emerging DNA-enabled sensing and Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) systems. In such channels, the bound-state observation exhibits both inter-symbol interference (ISI) and colored counting noise. To capture these effects in a communication-oriented form, we develop a Markov state-space framework based on a voxelized reaction-diffusion model, in which a block-structured transition matrix describes molecular transport and binding/unbinding dynamics. For the microarray specialization, this representation yields the channel impulse response (CIR), the equilibrium gain, and a settling-time-based characterization of the effective channel memory. Building on the resulting symbol-rate observation model for on-off keying, we derive a grouped-binomial counting model and obtain a closed-form expression for the covariance of the counting noise. Based on these statistics, we further develop a differential-threshold detector and a finite-memory decision-feedback equalizer and benchmark them against a symbol-by-symbol maximum a posteriori detector with decision feedback (MAP-DF). Numerical results validate the theoretical correlation behavior and show that the relative performance of the proposed receivers depends strongly on the channel-memory regime.

Feeling of Knowing in Large Language Models

Zichuan Fu, Xian Wu, Jingtong Gao, Wenlin Zhang, Jiaxuan Li, Binhao Wang, Yimin Deng, Guojing Li 等 12 位作者

Post-training updates change what large language models (LLMs) can answer, but may leave their answerability judgments misaligned. We study this knowledge-judgment desynchronization through functional feeling of knowing (FoK), which supports selective generation, retrieval triggering, and model routing without implying subjective experience. We propose two trainable channels: a knowledge channel that changes answerability and a FoK channel that judges the current knowledge state. Three stages train them: on-policy supervised fine-tuning (OP-SFT) updates knowledge from corrected on-policy answers; knowledge-delta FoK training (K$Δ$-FT) adapts judgments across intermediate knowledge states; and FoK-guided policy optimization (FGPO) trains the subsequent answer or explanation. Factual-QA experiments, cross-dataset evaluation, and three sequential updates show that explicit FoK alignment improves judgment quality on updated knowledge. MMLU and ARC-Easy separately assess capability preservation.

Survival-Time Risk Beyond Low-Order Channel Models: Identifiability and Scheduling

Ruifeng Zheng, Zhihan Xu, Pit Hofmann, Frank H. P. Fitzek

This paper investigates whether low-order packet-loss statistics suffice to assess survival-time risk under bursty packet losses, i.e., the probability that no update succeeds for a prescribed number of consecutive slots. Conventional models, such as the Gilbert model, characterize packet losses using the loss rate and mean burst length, but channels sharing these statistics may exhibit substantially different failure risks. We characterize the Markov channels one order above a given low-order fit that share its statistics and analyze their risks under acknowledgment-based scheduling with transmission budgets. We show that, with dense transmission attempts, risk is primarily governed by loss persistence beyond the modeled memory, and the worst-case channel need not be the most persistent one. Under limited budgets, retry spacing makes loss relapse probabilities important and can reverse the risk ordering of compatible channels. Numerical and measurement results show that low-order models can substantially underestimate the risk, highlighting the need for scheduling-dependent channel statistics.

Lie Routing Vision Language Models for View-Robust 3D Understanding

Jingjun Yi, Chen Hu, Qi Bi, Hao Zheng, Huimin Huang, Yongkang, Wei Ji, Yawen Huang 等 10 位作者

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have made substantial progress in 3D scene understanding from multi-view RGB observations. Yet a fixed object and query can elicit inconsistent target-related responses across camera viewpoints, a phenomenon we characterize as viewpoint-induced semantic drift. We introduce LieVLM, a Lie routing framework for view-robust 3D understanding. Motivated by the rotational component of viewpoint change, Lie routing adapts visual representations by applying local $\mathrm{SO}(3)$ transformations to projected features within learned three-dimensional subspaces. Geometry tokens extracted by VGGT predict local rotation parameters and channel-wise routing coefficients. A closed-form Padé--Cayley map transforms projected visual features, whose identity-relative corrections are projected back and gated into the original visual and geometry features. This design retains the pretrained semantic and direct spatial context while learning view-dependent feature adjustments. Experiments on 3D captioning, grounding, detection, and spatial reasoning show consistent improvements over additive fusion across training scales and backbones. Controlled ablations examine the roles of geometric conditioning and transformation structure. Viewpoint analyses further reveal systematic variation in the predicted routing states alongside more localized target responses and stronger task performance across viewpoint changes.

Beyond Surface Features: Advancing Medical Vision-Language Alignment via Dynamic Evidence-Guided Preference Optimization

Zixuan Huang, Zhihong Zhu Tencent, Xiaolong Liu, Yanchao Hao Tencent PCG, Manman Zhang Tencent PCG, Zheng Wei Tencent Technology (Beijing) Company Limited, Bowen Xing University of Science and Technology Beijing, Xian Wu Tencent 等 11 位作者

Medical large Vision-Language Models (Med-LVLMs) have shown strong potential in multimodal clinical applications such as medical visual question answering and report generation. However, Med-LVLMs remain challenged by hallucinations caused by modality misalignment, where models prioritize textual knowledge over visual evidence and generate outputs that conflict with medical images. To mitigate this issue, recent studies have explored preference optimization to improve image–text alignment, achieving promising results. Despite these advances, existing preference-based methods still face two limitations in medical settings: (1) overfitting to superficial cues, and (2) pseudo convergence of the preference signal. In this paper, we propose Dynamic Evidence-Guided Preference Optimization (DEPO), a new framework that enables evidence-aware and adaptive preference learning for Med-LVLMs. DEPO introduces Multi-Modal Evidence Perturbation (MEP) to suppress non-causal textual and visual shortcuts, and Dispreferred Evidence Resampling (DER) to continuously update dispreferred responses as hallucination patterns evolve. Experiments on multiple medical VQA and report generation benchmarks demonstrate consistent improvements over existing methods, with strong robustness across datasets and architectures. All Codes and data will be released after review.

Guaranteeing Knowledge Integration with Joint Decoding for Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) significantly enhances Large Language Models (LLMs) by providing access to external knowledge. However, current research primarily focuses on retrieval quality, often overlooking the critical ”integration bottleneck”: even when relevant documents are retrieved, LLMs frequently fail to utilize them effectively due to conflicts with their internal parametric knowledge. In this paper, we argue that implicitly resolving this conflict in a single generation pass is suboptimal. We introduce GuarantRAG, a framework that explicitly decouples reasoning from evidence integration. First, we generate an ”Inner-Answer” based solely on parametric knowledge to capture the model’s reasoning flow. Second, to guarantee faithful evidence extraction, we generate a ”Refer-Answer” using a novel Contrastive DPO objective. This objective treats the parametric Inner-Answer as a negative constraint and the retrieved documents as positive ground truth, forcing the model to suppress internal hallucinations in favor of external evidence during this phase. Finally, rather than naive concatenation or using the DPO trained model directly, we propose a joint decoding mechanism that dynamically fuses the logical coherence of the Inner-Answer with the factual precision of the Refer-Answer at the token level. Experiments on five QA benchmarks demonstrate that GuarantRAG improves accuracy by up to 12.1% and reduces hallucinations by 16.3% compared to standard and dynamic RAG baselines.

CAPruner: Conceptual-Adjacent Scene Graph Pruner for Enhancing 3D Spatial Reasoning of Large Language Models

Shengli Zhou, Xiangchen Wang, Guanhua Chen Southern University of Science and Technology, Feng Zheng Southern University of Science and Technology

Large language models (LLMs) have recently been applied to 3D vision-language (3D-VL) tasks, which require spatial reasoning to identify target objects relative to anchors. Scene graphs are commonly employed to represent such relations, but reasoning over complete graphs incurs high token costs and computational inefficiencies, motivating the need for pruning. Existing pruning methods primarily rely on spatial proximity and often remove task-relevant relations, thereby undermining reliable spatial reasoning. To address these limitations, we derive a key requirement for scene graph pruning: preserving spatial relations that are most pertinent to the specific 3D-VL task. Guided by this insight, we propose the Conceptual-Adjacent Scene Graph Pruner (CAPruner). CAPruner integrates fuzzy semantic relevance with spatial proximity to estimate the importance of relations, enabling the selection of critical relations in a task-specific context. Moreover, to avoid costly relation-level annotations, CAPruner is trained by supervising the aggregated scores of each node’s incident edges. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CAPruner effectively preserves relations essential for spatial reasoning, leading to substantial performance improvements of LLMs on 3D-VL tasks. Code is available at https://github.com/fz-zsl/CAPruner.
