Who Should Know What? Empirical Information Design for Multi-Agent LLM Economies

原文摘要

The performance of multi-agent LLM systems depends not only on the capabilities of the underlying models but also on information-sharing policies, which govern what information each agent observes and at what level of detail. But does providing AI agents with more detailed information always improve collective outcomes, or can transparency paradoxically degrade efficiency? To investigate this, we introduce empirical information design, an experimental framework that systematically compares disclosure policies across economic markets populated by LLM agents, while holding interaction rules and models fixed. We evaluate ten frontier LLMs in multi-resource trade, bilateral bargaining, and double auctions, using ground-truth utilities to decouple identified opportunities from realized outcomes. We find that finer information disclosure yields highly model-dependent results. In trade, revealing exact valuations rather than ordinal preference rankings reduces realized gains for GPT-6 Sol (from 98% to 91% of maximum) yet increases them for Claude Sonnet 5 (from 72% to 86%). In bargaining, exact information leads Grok 4.7 to produce less balanced agreements, whereas Claude Opus 5.5 divides gains symmetrically. In double auctions, full disclosure inflates price demands, triggering market breakdown and lowering welfare for Gemini 3.1 Pro (97% to 78%), Claude Opus 5.5 (94% to 64%), and Grok 4.7 (97% to 62%). Overall, these results suggest that model selection and information design must be co-optimized, as LLMs vary in how their strategic responses to information impact system objectives.

原文摘要

Harness optimization improves long-horizon agents by refining the prompts, tools, memory, and hooks around a frozen model. Offline methods can learn from completed trajectories, but deploy one shared harness that may overfit training tasks and cannot react to evidence revealed during a new run. Online evolution can adapt before, during, or after one run through an evolver, but may have to reason about every intervention from scratch or rely on verifier feedback that is usually unavailable at test time. We introduce Meta$^2$, which moves offline optimization one level up: rather than optimizing a shared harness, it learns reusable knowledge for harness evolution and applies it within each task online. Offline, Meta$^2$ learns a textual Meta-Skill $M$ by contrasting training rollouts of the same task agent under three configurations: without an evolver, with an evolver guided by the current version of $M$, and with an evolver given privileged verifier information available only in training. Contrasts in trajectories and outcomes are aggregated across tasks to refine $M$ into reusable guidance on when and how to evolve, when to leave the harness unchanged, and which interventions to avoid. Online, an evolver combines the frozen $M$ with emerging trajectory evidence to decide whether to KEEP the harness unchanged or EVOLVE it through a task-local edit. Each edit applies to the rest of the same run without resetting its environment or progress. Thus, evolution guidance transfers across tasks while harness edits remain task-local, and held-out verifier feedback is never available to the evolver. On two long-horizon benchmarks, Terminal-Bench 2.1 and DeepSWE 1.1, Meta$^2$ achieves the highest performance among evaluated methods with GPT-5.6-Terra, reaching 81.00% and 44.44%, respectively. Ablations support the value of contrastive evolution guidance and keeping online harness edits task-local.

原文摘要

Robot manipulation critically depends on perception that preserves the action-relevant aspects of a scene. Yet most robot learning pipelines are built upon visual encoders pre-trained for static recognition or vision-language alignment, leaving motion understanding to downstream policies. We introduce DynaFLIP, a dynamics-aware multimodal pre-training framework that pushes motion understanding upstream into perception. We construct image-language-3D flow triplets from heterogeneous human and robot videos, and use these triplets as training-time supervision to shape an image-only encoder. Our key idea is to encourage the three modalities to span a small simplex volume in the shared hyperspherical space -- a smaller simplex volume indicating stronger alignment. To avoid the geometric ambiguity and trivial collapse of naive volume minimization, we combine simplex-volume minimization with a cosine regularizer and a contrastive objective. Our analyses show that DynaFLIP focuses on control-relevant regions critical for manipulation. The resulting dynamics-aware representations serve as reusable visual backbones and consistently outperform baselines across diverse downstream policies, including VLAs. We validate this across diverse simulation and real-world setups, with gains reaching +22.5% under out-of-distribution scenarios. Our results suggest that robot generalization improves when visual representations are trained to encode not just what is present, but how the world changes under action.

Why Freeze the Encoder? A Controlled Study of End-to-End Sequence-Graph Learning for User Behavior

Yuen Chen, Yulun Wu, Samuel Sharpe, Igor Melnyk, Nam H. Nguyen, Furong Huang, C. Bayan Bruss, Rizal Fathony

原文摘要

Modeling user behavior couples two distinct signals: a per-user sequence of events and a persistent user-to-user relation graph. Standard pipelines preserve these native formats by combining them in two stages: a sequence encoder is pretrained, its per-user embeddings are frozen, and a graph model is trained on top to allow for cheap serving and cross-task reuse. We ask a simple question: does training the sequence and graph models end-to-end help, and if so, when? To isolate the impact of the training strategy, we hold a standard sequence-encoder-to-GNN pipeline fixed and vary only the optimization method; on Brightkite, a matched control that starts both pipelines from the same pretrained encoder and changes only whether it is updated attributes a 10.6-point MRR gain to end-to-end updating. Across relationship prediction and fraud detection on five real-world datasets, we find that the benefit of end-to-end training is conditional: it improves clearly over frozen two-stage pipelines on relationship prediction, where the relation graph appears to carry much of the signal, whereas gains shrink where the predictive signal is largely node-local (fraud detection), a regime in which a text-fed relational graph transformer achieves competitive results. Furthermore, recasting the data as a temporal graph yields inconsistent results compared to this native sequence-graph formulation. Ultimately, this work provides a controlled empirical account of when jointly training the two structures helps.

AuRA: From Atoms to Bits through Autonomous Robot Interaction

Xinchen Yu, Yoonkyo Jung, Haoran Chen, Zikui Cai, Aayush Talreja, Seungjae Lee, Hyunjin Kim, Furong Huang

原文摘要

Simulation enables robot-learning experiments at scale, but acquiring physics-informed digital twins often requires human manipulation and manual annotation of recorded interactions. To reduce this reliance on human effort, we present AuRA, a system that automates robot interaction and data preparation for digital-twin reconstruction. AuRA combines execution-aware grasp selection, gripper-motion measurements derived from robot states, and registered pre-interaction geometry and appearance priors. These choices enable autonomous collection, avoid reliance on visual gripper tracking, and recover object information obscured by the robot. Across 13 deformable objects, AuRA reduces active human labor and wall-clock collection time per successfully reconstructed asset by 88.5% and 55.4%, respectively. Relative to the human-collected PhysTwin baseline, AuRA improves seven of nine metrics for future prediction under known gripper motion, including a 28.1% reduction in one-way $L_1$ Chamfer distance. It also achieves similar mean silhouette IoU and Chamfer distance under the evaluated unseen interactions. These results highlight the potential of autonomous robot interaction to support more efficient digital-twin acquisition with comparable reconstruction quality.

Teach a Reward Model to Correct Itself: Reward Guided Adversarial Failure Discovery for Robust Reward Modeling

Pankayaraj Pathmanathan, Furong Huang University of Maryland

原文摘要

Reward models (RMs) trained from human preferences are central to aligning large language models, yet they often break under distribution shift or targeted perturbations. Existing failure discovery methods rely on prior knowledge of preference attributes and therefore do not scale to new models or data. We introduce a preference distribution agnostic procedure that uses the reward model itself to guide controlled decoding toward mis specified responses while preserving the underlying preference class. Building on this discovery mechanism, we propose REFORM, a self improving RM framework that (i) searches for class consistent but reward inconsistent variants and (ii) fine tunes the RM on a small, targeted augmentation of these failures. On Anthropic Helpful Harmless and PKU Beavertails, REFORM consistently improves robustness without degrading in distribution reward quality across different models (e.g., Mistral-7B and Qwen-14B), with an average improvement of 35%–45%.Further, across Best of N sampling, PPO, and DPO, REFORM preserves downstream generation quality and reduces spurious correlations. Our results show that RMs can serve as their own adversary to expose and fix blind spots, yielding robust alignment without manual attribute priors or large scale relabeling.
