Traffic-VL: Reinforced Vision-Language Models for Generalizable End-to-End Traffic Signal Control

Xingchen Zou, Maonan Wang, Kemou Jiang, Jie Li, Yiqi Chen, Xi Chen, Hai Yang, Yuxuan Liang

Existing traffic signal control methods typically rely on structured traffic states produced by dedicated perception pipelines. Emerging visual approaches often use idealized simulator images and convert them into intermediate representations before control, limiting their ability to directly exploit roadside visual observations. To bridge both the visual-domain and perception-to-decision gaps, we introduce SynTra-V and Traffic-VL. SynTra-V converts physics-based traffic simulations into photorealistic multi-view surveillance imagery across diverse road topologies and sensing conditions, and automatic semantic auditing checks that control-critical geometry, vehicle movements, and lane semantics match the simulator state. Traffic-VL is an eight-billion-parameter vision-language model that directly maps synchronized multi-view images and natural-language phase descriptions to signal decisions without intermediate structured states. Building on Traffic-R1's two-stage reinforced reasoning framework, Traffic-VL adapts its vision encoder via offline reinforcement learning on SynTra-V and freezes it during online visual stepwise trajectory policy optimization in closed-loop simulation. Experiments show that Traffic-VL matches structured-state Traffic-R1 while outperforming image-based controllers and general-purpose vision-language models, including Gemini 3 Pro. Evaluations on unseen topologies, degraded sensing conditions, real surveillance footage, and a three-week deployment across ten intersections further demonstrate robust visual generalization and effective constrained online control.

Recast: Refinement-Centered Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search Optimized for Storage

Zehai Yang, Fengyi Tao, Wenzhuo Dong, Shimin Chen

Large-scale ANNS systems often exploit storage in addition to DRAM for supporting vector search. The central question is how to divide the work between memory and storage for achieving both high query throughput-recall and good index maintenance performance. Existing storage-optimized ANNS paradigms fall short of providing a complete answer: disk-resident graph indexes have difficulty in supporting efficient vector deletions, while posting-list systems often incur more disk I/Os for queries. In this paper, we introduce a refinement-centered paradigm for storage-optimized ANNS systems. We propose Recast as a concrete design of this paradigm. Recast stores raw vectors on disk and keeps an IVF index with our RecastQ quantization encoding in memory. For an ANNS query, Recast selects nprobe inverted lists and performs SIMD-based FastScan on their RecastQ codes to identify refinement candidates in memory. It then retrieves candidate vectors from disk, computes exact distances, and refines the top-K result. To reduce disk I/Os, RecastQ computes uncertainty intervals containing true distances with high probability. Our QUIC policy selects a minimal refinement set based on these intervals, minimizing candidate-retrieval I/Os. Both the on-disk raw vectors and the in-memory IVF structure support insertions and deletions. Experiments on real-world data sets show that Recast processes batched insertions and deletions 3.10-37.27x faster than SPFresh and OdinANN, while its QPS at 0.99 recall changes by at most 6.9% after updating 50% of the corpus. For static queries at 0.99 recall, Recast achieves 1.56-2.01x the QPS of the strongest baseline with the matched memory budget on each data set, while requiring 1.22-6.75x less external storage than the evaluated systems. At matched in-memory space, RecastQ also provides a better Recall-refinement frontier than RaBitQ.

PathCowork: Learning from real-world pathology practice to build AI copilots

Medical AI learns from the answers doctors record, but rarely from how they interpret the evidence to reach them. Here we introduce PathCowork, a framework that turns pathologists' narrated examinations into supervision for visual grounding and procedures that guide diagnostic AI agents. Synchronized gaze, narration and navigation link visual findings to the process of interpreting them. Across 48 sessions from 16 pathologists, the platform captured 1,028 minutes of slide review. Using these data, we trained PathCowork-1T for server deployment and PathCowork-27B for local deployment, with improved visual grounding. Across five organ-specific evaluations, agents combining this grounding with recorded diagnostic procedures achieved primary task scores averaging 17.9 and 24.1 percentage points higher than Claude Code and Codex, respectively, with shorter processing times and lower inference costs. Compared to the state-of-the-art multiple-instance learning AIs, the PathCowork agent-proposed regions achieved higher prostate-grading scores with limited slide labels. PathCowork can also help construct pathology AI benchmarks where questions derived from the recordings identified difficulties in recognizing viewing context and rejecting inapplicable premises. In summary, PathCowork proposes a new paradigm to scale up the data collection and train pathology AI through transparent reasoning from diagnostic sessions, opening a path towards systems that learn directly from routine clinical practice.

Sherry: Hardware-Efficient 1.25-Bit Ternary Quantization via Fine-grained Sparsification

The deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) on resource-constrained edge devices is increasingly hindered by prohibitive memory and computational requirements. While ternary quantization offers a compelling solution by reducing weights to -1, 0, +1, current implementations suffer from a fundamental misalignment with commodity hardware. Most existing methods must choose between 2-bit aligned packing, which incurs significant bit wastage, or 1.67-bit irregular packing, which degrades inference speed. To resolve this tension, we propose Sherry, a hardware-efficient ternary quantization framework. Sherry introduces a 3:4 fine-grained sparsity that achieves a regularized 1.25-bit width by packing blocks of four weights into five bits, restoring power-of-two alignment. Furthermore, we identify weight trapping issue in sparse ternary training, which leads to representational collapse. To address this, Sherry introduces Arenas, an annealing residual synapse mechanism that maintains representational diversity during training. Empirical evaluations on LLaMA-3.2 across five benchmarks demonstrate that Sherry matches state-of-the-art ternary performance while significantly reducing model size. Notably, on an Intel i7-14700HX CPU, our 1B model achieves zero accuracy loss compared to SOTA baselines while providing 25% bit savings and 10% speed up. The code is available at https://github.com/Tencent/AngelSlim.
