High-Dimensional Robust Mean Estimation from Doubly Corrupted and Heterogeneous Batches

Maryam Aliakbarpour, Vladimir Braverman, Yuhan Liu, Junze Yin

Modern data systems often require aggregating information from multiple sources: some might be entirely untrustworthy, while the remaining presumably reliable sources may still suffer from a small amount of corruption. We study robust mean estimation under this practical scenario, which is formulated through the double corruption model: samples are divided among $N$ users, each with $n$ samples. $\varepsilon$ fraction of the users could be arbitrarily corrupted, while each of the remaining ``good'' users still have $α$-fraction ($α>0$) of corrupted samples. The goal is to estimate the unknown mean $μ$ with small $\ell_2$ error. This is a challenging scenario because we must handle two types of adversarial corruption: user-level corruption and sample-level corruption. When the unknown distribution has covariance matrix bounded by the identity matrix, we design a sum-of-squares (SoS) algorithm that achieves an $\ell_2$ error of $\sqrtα$ with probability at least $2/3$ as long as the total number of samples $nN=\widetildeΩ(d/α)$. The estimation error and sample complexity are min-max optimal under the mild condition. For comparison, treating all $nN$ samples as $(\varepsilon+α)$-corrupted and applying standard robust mean estimation only achieves an error of $\sqrt{\varepsilon+α}$. Thus, our new algorithm removes the adverse effect of untrustworthy users and achieves the optimal error as if only sample-level corruption is present. Also, our SoS algorithm extends to the heterogeneous setting where each user's local mean could be additionally shifted by $\sqrtβ$ in $\ell_2$ distance. We show that an error of $O(\sqrt{α+β})$ can be achieved with probability at least $2/3$ when $nN=\widetildeΩ(d/(α+β))$.

Near-Optimal Mixedness Testing with Pauli Measurements

Jayadev Acharya, Abhilash Dharmavarapu, Yuhan Liu, Nengkun Yu

We consider a fundamental problem of \emph{mixedness testing}: Given $n$ copies of an $N$-qubit state $ρ$, determine whether $ρ= \mathbb{I}_d/d$ or $\|ρ-\mathbb{I}_d/d\|_1 \geq \varepsilon$ with high probability, where $d = 2^N$. In particular, we focus on performing this task with simple single-qubit measurements, i.e. measurements that are prepared independently on each qubit. We provide a nearly complete picture of single-qubit mixedness testing by showing that its copy-complexity is $\tildeΘ\left(\sqrt{10}^N/\varepsilon^2\right)$. To establish our lower bound, we introduce a new measurement-dependent lower bound framework for adaptive single-copy state certification. For the upper bound, we present a randomized Pauli basis measurement protocol, which relies on a new primitive for computationally efficient uniformity testing of correlation-concentrated distributions on the Boolean hypercube. In conjunction, we provide lower and upper bounds for mixedness testing with fixed Pauli measurement protocols.

Sublinear Copies Suffice for Fidelity Estimation with Pauli Measurements

Jayadev Acharya, Abhilash Dharmavarapu, Yuhan Liu, Nengkun Yu

We present the first worst-case, sublinear protocol to estimate the fidelity between a known target state and unknown lab-prepared state using Pauli basis measurements. More precisely, for $d$-dimensional states, we estimate the fidelity to $\pm \varepsilon$ using $o(d^{0.9675})/\varepsilon^2$ copies, which applies to all target states. Furthermore, our results establish improved guarantees for Pauli shadow tomography and Distributed Inner Product Estimation.

Scalable Neural Video Representation Compression

Tianhao Peng, Ho Man Kwan, Fan Zhang, Shan Liu, David Bull

Scalable video coding (SVC) encodes a video into a layered bitstream of a base layer and one or more enhancement layers, enabling decoding at different bitrate/quality/resolution operating points for diverse devices and network conditions. SVC has been incorporated into major video coding standards and has recently attracted growing interest for both scene-agnostic and scene-adaptive neural video codecs. Among the latter, implicit neural representation (INR) based codecs overfit a compact neural network to an individual video, offering fast decoding and competitive coding efficiency. However, research on scalable INR-based compression remains in its infancy: existing methods introduce additional network layers, which couple the bitrate with the decoding complexity and cannot match strong scalable/non-scalable codecs. This paper proposes S-NVRC, a scalable INR-based video codec that jointly supports fine-grained bitrate and decoding complexity scalability from a single embedded bitstream. It adopts a coarse-to-fine prefix for feature grids and a nested prefix for network layers, which scale bitrate and decoding complexity, respectively. With a single encoding, S-NVRC spans a wide range of bitrate and decoding complexity and outperforms SHM-12.4 and the multi-layer VTM-20.0 by 43.7% and 5.6% in BD-rate on the UVG dataset.

PolicyIK:基于强化学习的机械臂高精度逆运动学

PolicyIK: High-Precision Inverse Kinematics for Robot Arms with Reinforcement Learning

Yuhan Liu, Xinqi Liu, Zixuan Dong, Keith W. Ross, Shenji Wan

AI 速览:作者提出一种目标条件强化学习策略 PolicyIK,用姿态反馈更新关节位置参考,以追求机械臂高精度逆运动学。

Inverse kinematics (IK) converts end-effector pose commands into joint motion, and many vision-language-action (VLA) policies rely on it to act on a given arm and to transfer across embodiments. Precise IK remains laborious: redundancy and singularities complicate the inverse mapping, execution depends on hand-tuned controllers, and training data on physical robots are costly to collect. We present PolicyIK, a goal-conditioned reinforcement learning policy for high-precision IK. It updates joint-position references from pose feedback and observes its accumulated reference relative to the measured joints, so it can retain the offset that the position controller needs at rest. Two-scale pose errors with an error-dependent action gain resolve millimeter residuals while preserving large motions. Progress and dwell rewards teach it to both reach the tolerance and stay within it. In simulation, a single attempt by the trained PPO policy keeps the mean errors over the final second within 1 mm and 0.2° on 93.5% of held-out tasks, and a deployment protocol raises success to 98.9%. When trained directly on a physical arm with an off-policy RL learner, PolicyIK achieves higher reaching and holding success than all four classical IK controllers under the same time budgets. In simulated pick-and-place, PolicyIK executes the end-effector commands of the $π_{0.5}$ VLA policy with 95.7% success. These results show that reinforcement learning can provide high-precision inverse kinematics for robot arms. Code is available at https://github.com/Tinaliu0123/PolicyIK.

LIBRA: Programmatic Induction of Executable Tool Libraries

Zekai Li, Zhenke Liu, Yonghao Li, Junhan Liu, Xulong Xiao, Jiapeng Zhang

Large language model agents increasingly retrieve tools from large catalogs, yet most retrievers rank each tool independently by request similarity. For multi tool tasks, this recovers the goal matching tool while omitting prerequisite tools required by the workflow. We introduce LIBRA, a framework for Library Induction by Runtime Assembly that turns a flat tool catalog into an executable tool library. An LLM proposes per tool contracts of candidate invocations, reusable outputs and state changes, and success conditions; LIBRA then tests these compositions in a sandbox and retains the relations supported at runtime. Constructed before user queries, the library requires no dependency annotations, tool use trajectories, or task specific training, and supports both one-shot and agentic retrieval. On AppWorld, BFCL, and SciToolEval, LIBRA improves one-shot Recall and NDCG over the same dense retriever by 7.9 and 3.7 percentage points on average. Within ToolReAGt, it yields corresponding gains of 4.5 and 2.9 points after ten retrieval iterations.

LiquidCP: Decoupling Attention Tasks from Communication and Kernel Boundaries in Context Parallelism

Hongyu Chen, Yikang Ruan, Yuhai Long, Ziyu Huang, Yiyu Luo, Liukun Yu, Yangjie Zhou, Zihan Liu 等 17 位作者

Context parallelism (CP) partitions long sequences across GPUs for LLM training and inference. For variable-length training and full prefill, attention-balanced placement can leave token loads uneven, while ring execution repeats overhead at each computation and communication step. In stage-serialized decode CP (DCP), long-running tasks delay dependent work and leave substantial GPU hardware idle. We propose LiquidCP, which unifies training and inference through a common model of Transfer, Compute, and Reduction tasks with tile-level dependencies, decoupling attention tasks from communication and kernel boundaries. For training and full prefill, MegaRing incorporates BuddyRing placement to balance attention and token loads, and coalesces ready KV regions during forward attention to amortize overhead. For decoding and mixed batches, MegaDCP selects history-KV splits by jointly modeling the completion of attention and its dependent reductions. A shared persistent GPU-resident engine executes both designs. Compared with the fastest baseline per configuration on eight H100 GPUs, MegaRing achieves geometric-mean core-attention speedups of $1.23\times$ forward and $1.18\times$ backward, and accelerates a Transformer layer by $1.08$--$1.16\times$. MegaDCP achieves geometric-mean core-attention speedups of $1.20\times$ for decode-only and $1.35\times$ for mixed batches. In vLLM serving with KV prefix cache, it achieves an average time-to-first-token speedup of $1.22\times$.

VagueBench: Benchmarking the Robustness of Embodied Agents on Ambient Context Illusions

Yang Qu, Qiang Fu, Zonghao Ying, Jiayi Zhao, Yaoyuan Zhang, Jinyang Guo, Jian Yang, Aishan Liu 等 10 位作者

Embodied agents are increasingly deployed in open-world environments, yet current robustness evaluations remain biased toward hazardous instructions and jailbreak vulnerabilities. A more fundamental issue is largely overlooked: agents are rarely tested under semantically sufficient but contextually minimal instructions (i.e., common in real-world human communication), where auxiliary contextual cues are absent. For the first, we identify a novel phenomenon termed Ambient Context Illusion, where agents fail to execute tasks correctly when non-essential contextual details are omitted, despite unchanged task semantics. To systematically study this, we establish VagueBench, a benchmark built upon the AI2-THOR interactive simulation environment for the evaluation of context dependency in embodied agents. We systematically consider key semantic components of instructions (entities, procedures, constraints, and prior knowledge) and derive a unified taxonomy with four categories and nine subtypes to reduce auxiliary information. VagueBench contains 1,303 instruction pairs across diverse indoor environments, constructed via a human-agent co-generation framework that integrates semantic redundancy estimation, taxonomy-guided transformation, and rigorous semantic-invariance verification. Through extensive evaluation on 6 state-of-the-art embodied agents, we observe significant degradation on VagueBench in both task performance and executability (relatively -19.65% in task success rate and relatively +54.10% in empty plan rate) revealing a strong reliance on auxiliary linguistic signals rather than core task semantics. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this phenomenon persists in real-world robotic systems, where it can lead to incorrect decisions and potential safety risks.

MERIS: Adaptive Real-Time Scheduling of Refined Inference DAGs in Dynamic Robotic Environments

Zexin Li, Tao Ren, Johnathan Liu, Xiaoxi He, Cong Liu

Robots deployed in dynamic environments execute changing directed-acyclic-graph (DAG) workloads under limited compute and timing budgets. This article presents MERIS, a framework for model scheduling under real-time constraints that combines proportional intermediate deadlines, MIMONet-aware graph refinement, and event-driven synchronization for multi-task inference on resource-constrained robotic platforms. We distinguish three representations: the application DAG, each MIMONet's internal encoder/decoder graph, and the refined scheduling DAG, and make the scope of the timing argument explicit. If the profiled execution bounds, release assumptions, precedence barriers, and per-level capacity premises hold, satisfaction of the assigned sub-deadlines composes to the end-to-end deadline. For non-partitionable tasks, we define a profile-bounded admission rule; before interpreting that rule as empirical timing evidence, we require direct per-task completion checks. We report run-level QoE alongside the offered-node deadline missing rate, making explicit that run completion and successful service of every node are different outcomes. We propose a comprehensive minibenchmark for evaluating the performance of schedulers under various DNN-driven autonomous driving scenarios. Extensive experiments on Nano Orin, AGX Orin, and M3 Max demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

FindLink: Learning to Assess Scientific Connections from Source-Grounded Premises

Jingxuan Wei, Song Tan, Xiaohan Liu, Chao Sang, Changwei Wang, Linzhuang Sun, Bihui Yu, Fuqiang Wang 等 9 位作者

Scientific discovery from the literature requires assessing connections among findings obtained under different study conditions. Source attribution makes individual findings traceable, but does not determine what they jointly support. We introduce GI-TraceBench, a benchmark of 10,282 questions in gastrointestinal oncology that unifies provenance question answering, knowledge discovery, and hypothesis evaluation through shared Paper, Claim, and Evidence Span records. We further propose FindLink, a two-stage framework for provenance-grounded scientific reasoning. Premise Grounding constructs source-bound premises with explicit study context and support status. Structured Reasoning organizes these premises into support plans that represent both supported relations and unresolved conditions, then generates evidence-conditioned answers using deterministic compiler feedback. The compiler verifies structural and source-binding consistency, but does not assess scientific entailment. On the 1,545-question fixed-evidence test set, FindLink improves the balanced family macro score from 67.95 to 87.25 over direct supervised fine-tuning of the same backbone. A retrained variant without Structured Reasoning achieves slightly higher premise-identifier F1, but substantially lower relation and evidence-sufficiency F1. These results indicate that scientific reasoning requires not only identifying grounded premises, but also assessing what connections those premises support.

Cumulative and Audited Guardrail Tool Evolution for LLM Agent Safety

Xiao Yang, Aishan Liu, Siyuan Liang, Zonghao Ying, Le Wang, Jiakai Wang, Xianglong Liu, Dacheng Tao

Large language model (LLM) agents increasingly operate in open-world environments where safety risks cannot be fully predefined. However, most existing guardrail mechanisms remain static, relying on fixed rules, prompts, or classifiers that generalize poorly to emerging risks. Here we present EVOLVE, a tool-level self-evolving defense framework that formulates agent security as a process of cumulative security evolution. Inspired by how human societies transform experiences into transferable protective knowledge, EVOLVE externalizes security knowledge into executable guardrail tools that are continuously inherited, independently audited, and iteratively refined through lifelong interaction. Across multiple benchmarks, backbone models, and embodied environments, EVOLVE consistently outperforms existing defenses across diverse risk scenarios with +22\% average F1 score. We further validate the framework in real-world robotic and autonomous agent systems. Our results suggest that scalable agent safety may require continuously evolving defense systems rather than static guardrails.

Label-Free Localization and Test-Time Suppression of CLIP's Typographic Circuits

Bohan Liu, Wenqian Ye, Guangzhi Xiong, Zhenghao He, Sanchit Sinha, Aidong Zhang

CLIP-based Vision-Language Models have become cornerstones of modern multimodal systems. The cross-modal contrastive objective equips the CLIP vision encoder to both see objects and read text. These two abilities induce an entanglement between the encoding of lexical and semantic shapes, creating a distinctive vulnerability to typographic attacks, in which rendered text overrides an image's semantic content with its literal meaning. The black-box nature of these encoders has prevented a mechanistic interpretation of such entanglement. We introduce a head-decomposed Sparse Dictionary Learning (SDL) architecture that, by design, decomposes individual attention heads into interpretable, head-specific latents. Based on this inductive disentanglement, we re-purpose Clarity Score and propose normalized Text Attribution Score, which are both label-free, to identify attention heads that carry typographic information. As a causal validation of successful circuit separation, we perform a mechanistic intervention that reweighs attention away from the patch tokens in the identified lexical heads at test-time. Experiments show that the intervention effectively recovers object classification under typographic attack and, across five CLIP variants and four typographic benchmarks, achieves up to 46.9% improvement while incurring up to 1% accuracy loss in general image perception, outperforming prior supervised and training-free methods. Expanding on the mechanistic intervention, we propose a test-time adaptive attention head routing to further reduce the impact on performance at matched robustness, pushing beyond the Pareto frontier of current robustness-perception tradeoff.

GistRank: Gist-Compressed Listwise Ranking with Large Language Models

Guo Chen, Wenhan Liu, Reed Li, Qianwen Ma, Yu Lu, Haibo Shi, Bingbing Xu, Junjie Huang

Large language models (LLMs) have become a powerful tool for listwise relevance ranking, which can improve web search by comparing retrieved passages jointly. However, processing every candidate verbatim and generating a permutation autoregressively can make inference costly, every candidate must be serialized verbatim into the prompt and the input therefore grows linearly with both the number and the length of the passages. While sliding-window ranking handles context limits through repeated re-encoding of overlapping blocks, hard compression techniques sacrifice the fine-grained details required for accurate discriminative judgment. To better understand and mitigate this trade-off, we conduct a comprehensive study of soft compression for LLM-based listwise ranking. Our findings reveal that a vanilla gist representation is ill-suited to ranking for two reasons: strictly causal encoding weakens how thoroughly each gist token absorbs its passage, and the representation is never trained to expose the relative-preference structure that separates closely competing candidates. To this end, we propose GistRank, a three-stage training framework that equips a large language model with gist-compressed passage representations by learning faithful gist tokens under a semi-bidirectional attention scheme, instilling discriminative comparison through pairwise training, and adapting the model to the listwise objective. GistRank collapses each passage into only $K{=}4$ gist tokens, this gives 14$\times$ speedups over one-shot full-text ranking while reaching 59.17 average nDCG@10 over TREC DL19/20 and five BEIR subsets within 0.89 of the strongest full-context baseline. Overall, GistRank provides an effective means to enhance efficiency for searches in real-world environments.

Towards Better Training Signal: Advantage Clipped Policy Optimization

Ruichuan Huang, Jinghan Liu, Congliang Chen

Reinforcement learning (RL) has become a cornerstone for improving the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs), but the need for on-policy data substantially limits training efficiency. Reusing off-policy data through importance sampling (IS) can improve efficiency but introduce considerable instability. Hence, algorithms such as PPO and GRPO widely adopt IS-ratio clipping to stabilize training. However, training stability and gradient estimate are mainly determined by the product of IS ratio and advantage. To further stabilize training, we propose ACPO, which clips the product of the IS ratio and the advantage, leading to more stable gradient estimates. We also establish a connection between ACPO and gradient clipping in policy mirror descent (PMD), which is a standard technique to stabilize optimization process, and prove the convergence of clipped-PMD under the standard RL setting. Experiments on widely used mathematical reasoning benchmarks show that ACPO consistently outperforms PPO and GRPO in both accuracy and training efficiency, delivering 4-6 percentage points gains on standard math benchmarks, with Qwen3-8B+PPO. Hence, ACPO is a practical and effective alternative to conventional IS-ratio clipping for RL post-training of LLMs.

We introduce Nemotron 3.5 Super and Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, open and efficient Mixture-of-Experts Hybrid Mamba-Transformer models designed for reasoning, long-context understanding, and agentic workloads. Super is a 120B-parameter, 12B-active multimodal model, while Lightning is a smaller 30B-parameter, 3B-active text model; both designed for efficient deployment. Both models combine large-scale distillation, long-context training, and native speculative decoding, while Super further incorporates Indic continued pretraining and agentic software-engineering mid-training. We develop a comprehensive post-training pipeline spanning supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning (RLVR and RLHF), complemented in Super by specialized teacher training and multi- teacher on-policy distillation (MOPD). This transforms Super from a text-only base model into a multimodal agent capable of reasoning over text, images, video, and interactive tool environments. We further explore test-time scaling through parallel agent execution and self-verification. Across training and deployment, we jointly optimize capability and efficiency. Indic continued pretraining improves Indian-language benchmarks by up to 9.82 percentage points, while agentic mid-training strengthens software-engineering capabilities and robustness across agent harnesses. The post-trained Super model achieves 51.78% on SWE-bench Pro, surpassing Nemotron 3 Ultra despite using approximately 4.6x fewer active parameters. Post-training MTP boosting improves speculative- decoding acceptance length by up to 21.8% under probabilistic draft sampling, while NVFP4 quantization achieves 99.62% median accuracy recovery relative to BF16. Inference optimizations enable up to 4,856 output tokens/s/GPU on GB200 while sustaining at least 50 tokens/s/user.

Towards Generalizing Pretrained All-Atom Representations to Unified Binder Design

Maojiang Su, Jiale Chen, Qijie Zhu, Shang Wu, Jiayi Wang, Jihai Zhao, Guo Ye, Yibo Wen 等 9 位作者

PairFormer-based all-atom models demonstrate strong capabilities in biomolecular binder design. However, existing methods often use all-atom representations for modality-specific binder design, such as protein and peptide design. In contrast, recent geometric latent diffusion models pursue unified binder design by representing molecular blocks from different modalities in a shared latent space. These complementary strengths motivate us to investigate how to generalize the use of pretrained all-atom representations to unified binder design. We introduce PairFuse, a parameter-efficient method that enables this generalization through representation fusion. Specifically, we use lightweight layerwise adapters to integrate pretrained all-atom representations into an independently pretrained geometric latent diffusion model. Our adapters integrate pretrained all-atom representations through two mechanisms: enriching the diffusion model's molecular block features and incorporating pairwise structural information into the geometric diffusion model's denoiser. Theoretically, we prove that the augmented denoiser preserves geometry and pairwise attention fusion provides additional attention expressivity beyond feature-only fusion. Experimentally, across antibody, peptide, and small molecule binder-design benchmarks, PairFuse achieves stronger performance than the pretrained diffusion model and existing representation-fusion baselines.

TaskBridge: Technical Report for SIGIR 2026 eCommerce Challenge

Zhiheng Fu, Yupeng Hu, Zixu Li, Zhiwei Chen, Qinlei Huang, Shaokun Wang, Han Liu, Fan Liu 等 10 位作者

The SIGIR 2026 eCommerce Challenge Query Reformulation Task evaluates the reformulation of task-oriented queries into expressions suitable for product retrieval, followed by BM25-based retrieval. These queries often imply product needs through activity-level semantics, creating a lexical gap with catalog descriptions. Systems must preserve task intent while adapting the number of reformulations to the Automatic and Interactive protocols. We propose TaskBridge, a catalog-anchored framework comprising Catalog Semantic Anchoring, Unified Five-Candidate Rewriting, and Protocol-Aware Selection. It grounds queries in catalog vocabulary, generates five complementary reformulations, and selects one query for Automatic retrieval or up to four for Interactive retrieval using BM25 scores, query-product reranking, and weighted Jaccard overlap. The selected queries are independently executed using BM25 to produce results in the required six-column format. Experiments demonstrate improved retrieval effectiveness, with multiple complementary queries providing additional gains in the Interactive setting. TaskBridge achieved first place in the SIGIR 2026 eCommerce Challenge.

LISA: Linear-Indexed Sparse Attention for Efficient Long-Context Reasoning

Yu Zhao, Zekun Zhang, Fan Jiang, Bo Zeng, Xintong Wang, Chonghan Liu, Shimin Shan, Yichao Du 等 9 位作者

Long chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning models such as DeepSeek-R1 keep lengthening their inference chains under test-time scaling, yet standard self-attention incurs quadratic cost in context length, making long-CoT deployment costly in production. We therefore introduce LISA (Linear-Indexed Sparse Attention), a plug-and-play replacement for self-attention that requires no full pretraining. LISA combines a linear-attention branch for long-range memory with a Lightning Indexer that dynamically selects the most relevant tokens for a sparse self-attention branch. The two branches are fused through a learned gate, so the model retains broad context while focusing computation on informative tokens. We train LISA in two stages. In Stage 1, a linear-attention branch is integrated with sliding-window attention and distilled from a frozen teacher's full-attention distribution. In Stage 2, the Lightning Indexer replaces the static window and is trained with a per-head KL-divergence objective to mimic teacher attention patterns. The resulting model reduces eager-mode self-attention computation from quadratic in sequence length to linear in the number of generated tokens and the selected context budget. Experiments on DeepSeek-distilled Qwen models show that LISA cuts measured eager-mode mean sample latency by 23.9% at 16K context without degrading long-context reasoning quality. Across nine mathematical and code reasoning benchmarks, the gated LISA-1.5B model improves the equal-weight benchmark average by 4.2 percentage points relative to the full-attention baseline.

FVH-Bench: Evaluating Image Generator Safety Beyond Overtly Harmful Imagery

Zihao Zhu, Yuhan Liu, Siwei Lyu, Baoyuan Wu

Modern image generators can produce complex visual artifacts, including diagrams, interfaces, and records that combine text, graphics, and layout to convey detailed information. They may refuse requests for overtly harmful imagery yet still generate artifacts that guide dangerous actions or support deception. We call the risk arising from what such images enable, rather than only what they depict, functional visual harm (FVH). Existing safety benchmarks focus largely on overtly harmful content, such as pornography and graphic violence, leaving image generators' safety alignment against FVH insufficiently evaluated. To address this gap, we introduce FVH-Bench, comprising 669 prompts across five harmful visual functions and ten risk domains. The 11 evaluated image generators rarely refuse these requests and frequently generate artifacts that fulfill the targeted harmful functions. High scores for target harm realization and harmful artifact usability further indicate that these outputs can support the intended harmful purposes. A further analysis finds that existing safety detectors also provide limited coverage of FVH, indicating gaps in their ability to recognize harmful visual functions. Together, these findings show that evaluating image-generator safety alignment requires considering not only what images depict, but also what they may enable.

Efficient Quantization Training with Stochastic Rounding via Structured Subspace Randomness

Zeyu Wang, Yiheng Duan, Tao Chen, Donghyun Koo, Sihan Liu, Wenbo Zhang, Chuan He, Liang Liu

Low-precision training often relies on stochastic rounding (SR) to keep quantized gradients unbiased and prevent small updates from rounding to zero. Standard SR draws an independent random threshold for every gradient element. However, accelerators generate random numbers on vector units whose throughput lags far behind their matrix units. Drawing one threshold per element saturates the vector unit and can make INT8 training with SR slower than BF16 training. Sharing random thresholds across tensor elements removes this cost but forces those elements to round in the same direction and shifts their rounding errors by a common offset. We find that this offset degrades training primarily through the activation gradient, which propagates the error backward into earlier layers. Because earlier layers cannot cancel an incoming offset using their own local rounding errors, the offset must be removed at the layer where it originates. We propose Structured Subspace Stochastic Rounding (S3R), which quantizes each upstream gradient once for both the activation and weight gradient matrix multiplications and shares a single threshold per token across the hidden dimension. Its error correction, S3R-EC, subtracts the structured mean rounding error from the activation and weight gradients while leaving the optimizer unchanged. In LLM pre-training experiments, uncorrected threshold sharing degrades convergence, whereas S3R-EC eliminates this degradation and matches the validation loss of independent SR. Furthermore, S3R-EC accelerates full INT8 training steps of dense LLMs on TPU v5p by 1.24x to 1.32x over BF16 and by 1.11x over independent SR.

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models have shown remarkable generalization by mapping web-scale knowledge to robotic control, yet they remain blind to physical contact. Consequently, they struggle with contact-rich manipulation tasks that require reasoning about force, texture, and slip. While some approaches incorporate low-dimensional tactile signals, they fail to capture the high-resolution dynamics essential for such interactions. To address this limitation, we introduce DreamTacVLA, a framework that grounds VLA models in contact physics by learning to feel the future. Our model adopts a hierarchical perception scheme in which high-resolution tactile images serve as micro-vision inputs coupled with wrist-camera local vision and third-person macro vision. To reconcile these multi-scale sensory streams, we first train a unified policy with a Hierarchical Spatial Alignment (HSA) loss that aligns tactile tokens with their spatial counterparts in the wrist and third-person views. To further deepen the model's understanding of fine-grained contact dynamics, we finetune the system with a tactile world model that predicts future tactile signals. To mitigate tactile data scarcity and the wear-prone nature of tactile sensors, we construct a hybrid large-scale dataset sourced from both high-fidelity digital twin and real-world experiments. By anticipating upcoming tactile states, DreamTacVLA acquires a rich model of contact physics and conditions its actions on both real observations and imagined consequences. Across contact-rich manipulation tasks, it outperforms state-of-the-art VLA baselines, achieving up to 95% success, highlighting the importance of understanding physical contact for robust, touch-aware robotic agents.

Structure, Not Sequence: Tracking and Validating Folding Mechanisms in ESMFold's Trunk with Sparse Autoencoders

Bohan Liu, Xiaohan Fan, Wenqian Ye, Aidong Zhang

Structure predictors like ESMFold fold proteins using neural network computation and have transformed structural biology. However, the driving mechanism from amino-acid (AA) sequence to 3D structure is insufficiently understood, and biological meaning remains locked in the dense network. Sparse autoencoders (SAEs) have shown promising results in obtaining interpretable concept features over an overcomplete basis of intermediate protein sequence-model representations. Yet folding models, which predict physical shape from AA sequence semantics, have no such account. We hypothesize that the features carrying the folding computation evolve in the 3D structural regression process. In this paper, we interpret the folding trunk in three steps. First, a pilot analysis on the representation distribution across modules and recycles locates distinct spatial computation in the trunk. Second, the dictionaries expose a division of labor: the single representation carries inherited semantics, and the pair representation computes the pairwise geometry. Third, we interpret the dictionary at scale with a reasoning language model, trace how the concepts compose across blocks by gradient-based attribution, and follow the interpreted code to the model's folding output, verifying where the computation aligns with, or departs from, known biochemistry. Together, the sparse dictionaries we train capture the relational geometry the trunk computes beyond the sequence model, and their concept activations forecast the model's own fold quality, turning the black-box folding trunk into a sparse, interpretable, and scientifically verifiable circuit.

Semantic-Geometric Task Representations for Bimanual Manipulation from Human Demonstrations to Robot Action Planning

Franziska Herbert, Vignesh Prasad, Han Liu, Dorothea Koert, Georgia Chalvatzaki

Learning structured task representations from human demonstrations is essential for bimanual manipulation, where action ordering, object involvement, and interaction geometry vary significantly across executions. A key challenge lies in jointly capturing the discrete semantic task structure and the temporal evolution of object-centric geometric relations in a form that supports reasoning over task progression. We introduce a semantic-geometric graph-based task representation that jointly encodes object identities, inter-object semantic relations, and per-object motion histories, via a Message Passing Neural Network (MPNN) encoder and a Transformer-based decoder. The encoder operates solely on the temporal scene graph, producing structured representations decoupled from action labels. The decoder then conditions on action-context to forecast future actions, associated objects, and object motions. This decoupling learns task-agnostic representations, enabling encoder reuse across embodiments through decoder-only finetuning on a small robot dataset. Across eleven bimanual tasks from two datasets, we find that the benefit of structured semantic--geometric representations over simpler sequence-based models grows with task variability in action ordering and object involvement. At deployment, a planner couples the action and motion predictions with learned Probabilistic Movement Primitives, achieving full task success on two real-robot bimanual tasks and outperforming graph ablations, Transformer, decoder-only, and finetuned vision-language model baselines.

CaliMem: Search-Efficient Data Agent via Calibrated Memory

Hanze Li, Athan Z. Li, Feiyang Kang, Jiachen T. Wang, Yuhan Chen, Ruishan Liu, Ruoxi Jia

Data curation is a first-order design choice in machine learning, yet tailoring training data to a downstream model and task remains costly in labor, expertise, and compute. Datasets are therefore often processed through fixed pipelines and reused across applications. We show that this assumption is fragile: across 55 dataset--model tasks spanning biological domains, the same curation recipe can help one model while hurting another. Effective curation must adapt to the downstream setting, motivating automated search over data recipes. We first build an agentic system that searches for curation policies at deployment, improving data utility via \textit{test-time curation (TTC)}. Although achieving performance gains, its search is driven largely by recent feedback and remains local. Adding persistent memory helps the agent retain evidence across iterations and reveals a deeper problem: it forms claims that extend beyond the conditions in which they were observed, sometimes abandoning an entire strategy after a single unsuccessful trial. To address this problem, we introduce CaliMem, a calibrated-memory agentic loop that requires the agent to predict the outcome of each proposed policy before executing it. Comparing this prediction with the observed result gives the agent a \textit{reality check} on the claims behind its proposal. It uses the prediction error to retain supported claims, revise mistaken ones, and specify the conditions under which a conclusion holds. This makes the agent's beliefs testable, reduces overgeneralization, and supports more effective long-horizon exploration. Across biological and LLM post-training tasks, CaliMem consistently outperforms fixed curation baselines and published methods, and exceeds full-data training by up to 19.4\%. Code is open-sourced.

Gardener: An Agentic AI System for Single-Cell RNA Sequence Analysis

Junhan Liu, Zhenke Liu Brown University, Yongcheng Shi, Peilin Yu Apple, Minxing Zhang, Jiapeng Zhang University of Southern California

Gardener is an interactive agentic system for single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) analysis that enables expert-steered, iterative workflows under strict data-residency requirements. Existing large language model (LLM)-based analysis agents commonly encode workflow progress as implicit conversational state and rely on cloud-centric execution, which hinders traceability and auditability and complicates keeping sensitive expression data on-device. Gardener grounds cloud-side reasoning in a local, on-device scientific engine and an Experiment Management Kernel (EMK) that externalizes analysis progress as persistent, immutable snapshots linked by lineage. This explicit state representation supports rollback, branching, and comparison of alternative analysis paths while reusing prior computation. Gardener enforces data isolation by design: cloud-hosted LLMs operate only on snapshot identifiers and sanitized summaries, while raw expression matrices and local artifacts remain on the user’s device. A local graphical user interface (GUI) provides human-in-the-loop steering and inspection of workflow state and outputs. Gardener is released as an open-source desktop application for macOS and Windows under the Apache License 2.0.

MED-COPILOT: A Medical Assistant Powered by GraphRAG and Similar Patient Case Retrieval

Shuheng Chen, Namratha Patil, Haonan Pan, Angel Hsing-Chi Hwang University of Southern California, Yao Du University of Southern California, Ruishan Liu University of Southern California, Jieyu Zhao University of Southern California

Clinical decision-making requires synthesizing heterogeneous evidence, including patient histories, clinical guidelines, and trajectories of comparable cases. While large language models (LLMs) offer strong reasoning capabilities, they remain prone to hallucinations and struggle to integrate long, structured medical documents. We present MED-COPILOT, an interactive research prototype for evidence-aware clinical reasoning, designed to help clinicians and medical trainees inspect guideline-level and patient-level evidence. MED-COPILOT combines guideline-grounded GraphRAG retrieval with hybrid semantic-keyword similar-patient retrieval to support transparent and evidence-aware clinical reasoning. The system builds a structured knowledge graph from WHO and NICE guidelines, applies community-level summarization for efficient retrieval, and maintains a 36,000-case similar-patient database derived from SOAP-normalized MIMIC-IV notes and Synthea-generated records. We evaluate our framework on clinical note completion and medical question answering, and demonstrate that it consistently outperforms parametric LLM baselines and standard RAG, improving generation fidelity and benchmark QA accuracy. The full system is available at https://huggingface.co/spaces/shuhengc/MED-COPILOT, enabling users to inspect retrieved evidence, visualize token-level similarity contributions, and conduct guided follow-up analysis. Our results suggest a practical and interpretable approach to integrating structured guideline knowledge with patient-level analogical evidence for clinical LLMs.

Smarter, not Bigger: Fine-Tuned RAG-Enhanced LLMs for Automotive Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing

Chao Feng, Zihan Liu, Siddhant Gupta, Jan von der Assen

Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing is essential for automotive validation but suffers from fragmented and underutilized test artifacts. This paper presents HIL-GPT, an industry-deployed retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system that integrates semantic retrieval with domain-adapted large language models to support test engineers in real-world HIL workflows. The system combines domain-specific embeddings to enable traceable retrieval of test cases and requirements under industrial latency and cost constraints. Through empirical evaluation, we show that compact, domain-adapted models can achieve a favorable trade-off among accuracy, latency, and cost compared to larger general-purpose models, challenging the assumption that larger models are always preferable in industrial NLP systems. An A/B user study further confirms that HIL-GPT improves perceived helpfulness, truthfulness, and satisfaction over general-purpose LLMs.

ReasonRank: Empowering Passage Ranking with Strong Reasoning Ability

Wenhan Liu, Xinyu Ma Baidu, Weiwei Sun Carnegie Mellon University, Yutao Zhu, Yuchen Li Baidu Inc., Dawei Yin Baidu, Zhicheng Dou Renmin University of China

Large Language Model (LLM) based listwise ranking has shown superior performance in many passage ranking tasks. With the development of Large Reasoning Models (LRMs), many studies have demonstrated that step-by-step reasoning during test-time helps improve listwise ranking performance. However, due to the scarcity of reasoning-intensive training data, existing rerankers perform poorly in many complex ranking scenarios, and the ranking ability of reasoning-intensive rerankers remains largely underdeveloped. In this paper, we first propose an automated reasoning-intensive training data synthesis framework, which sources training queries and passages from diverse domains and applies DeepSeek-R1 to generate high-quality training labels. To empower the listwise reranker with strong reasoning ability, we further propose a two-stage training approach, which includes a cold-start supervised fine-tuning (SFT) stage and a reinforcement learning (RL) stage. During the RL stage, we design a novel multi-view ranking reward tailored to the multi-turn nature of listwise ranking. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our trained reasoning-intensive reranker ReasonRank outperforms existing baselines significantly and also achieves much lower latency than the pointwise reranker.

Efficient Paths and Dense Rewards: Probabilistic Flow Reasoning for Large Language Models

Yan Liu, Feng Zhang Peking University, Zhanyu Ma, Jun Xu Meituan, Jiuchong Gao, Jinghua Hao, Renqing He, Han Liu Dalian University of Technology 等 9 位作者

High-quality chain-of-thought has demonstrated strong potential for unlocking the reasoning capabilities of large language models. However, current paradigms typically treat the reasoning process as an indivisible sequence, lacking an intrinsic mechanism to quantify step-wise information gain. This granularity gap manifests in two limitations: inference inefficiency from redundant exploration without explicit guidance, and optimization difficulty due to sparse outcome supervision or costly external verifiers. In this work, we propose CoT-Flow, a framework that reconceptualizes discrete reasoning steps as a continuous probabilistic flow, quantifying the contribution of each step toward the ground-truth answer. Built on this formulation, CoT-Flow enables two complementary methodologies: flow-guided decoding, which employs a greedy flow-based decoding strategy to extract information-efficient reasoning paths, and flow-based reinforcement learning, which constructs a verifier-free dense reward function. Experiments on challenging benchmarks demonstrate that CoT-Flow achieves a superior balance between inference efficiency and reasoning performance.

Fair-CCD: Mitigating Bias in Large Language Models for Tabular Classification Through Context-Contrastive Decoding

Donghan Liu, Han Sun, Zhaohui Wang, Qin Li East China Normal University, Min Zhang

While recent studies show the effectiveness of in-context learning (ICL) for tabular data prediction, they also reveal significant fairness issues in large language models (LLMs). Prior work to mitigate fairness issues often employs interventions relying on subjective demonstration selection. Its effectiveness varies significantly with the specific demonstration content, leading to low controllability. Moreover, the improvement of fairness is highly unstable across different models and tasks. To address the challenges of low controllability and limited stability in fairness interventions, we propose Fairness-Aware Context-Contrastive Decoding (Fair-CCD). Fair-CCD first constructs Structural Bias Templates (SBTs), motivated by behavioral patterns observed in demonstrations, to encode the relationship between sensitive attributes and predicted labels in a structured and controllable form. During inference, Fair-CCD injects multiple SBTs and contrasts the model’s responses, generating two differential signals that guide fairness adjustment and preserve task performance. By leveraging attention signals to scale decoding adjustments guided by the difference signals, Fair-CCD achieves stable and adaptive bias mitigation across models and tasks. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that Fair-CCD consistently improves fairness metrics without degrading task accuracy.
