FastAFD: When Does Attention-FFN Disaggregation Pay on Rack-Scale NVLink?

Yichao Fu, Yuxuan Zhang, Minshen Zhang, Ruitian Wang, Junda Chen, Hao Zhang

Attention-FFN disaggregation (AFD) separates attention from the experts of a mixture-of-experts (MoE) model and has been reported to raise decode throughput over colocated serving. Whether this advantage holds on rack-scale NVLink systems such as GB200 NVL72 remains unclear: prior results were obtained on other hardware, against narrower colocated baselines, or with analytical models, whereas production engines serve large MoE models on these systems with wide expert parallelism (wide EP). We build and tune FastAFD, an AFD engine for GB200 NVL72 that overlaps the MoE of one microbatch with the attention of the other, and compare it against the best vLLM wide EP setting. Experiments show that AFD has a throughput advantage of up to 1.17x over wide EP on Qwen3 and 1.16x on Qwen3.5, and matches it on MiniMax-M2.5. We derive an analytical model that predicts AFD throughput within 3% using only profiles of colocated vLLM, telling whether switching to AFD would pay off before deploying it. The model yields a concise insight: AFD's speedup factors into a batch gain (larger batches, since attention GPUs hold no expert weights), an overlap gain (shorter steps, since the MoE runs on the expert GPUs behind attention), and a disaggregation cost (the GPUs given to experts). AFD has the advantage when the two gains outweigh the cost. This view explains which models benefit from AFD, and shows that speculative decoding helps light-expert models most, where the enlarged overlap gain outweighs the larger disaggregation cost and adds a further 8% to AFD's advantage over wide EP. Looking ahead, serving the experts on accelerators that keep their weights in on-chip SRAM, such as the Groq LPX accelerators paired with Vera Rubin NVL72, would remove most of the disaggregation cost, raising the ideal speedup to 2.48x with speculative decoding. FastAFD is open source at https://github.com/hao-ai-lab/FastAFD.

SQLoom: Set-Contrastive Learning of Syntactic, Semantic, and Logical Dependencies for Text-to-SQL

Hao Fu, Degang Sun, Wan Wei, Jinxia Wei, Chun Long, Peng Gao

Text-to-SQL translates natural language questions into SQL queries, enabling database access without writing SQL. Fine-tuning open-weight large language models (LLMs) is cost-effective, but existing methods treat SQL as ordinary text and optimize token-level likelihood without explicitly modeling its syntactic, semantic, and logical requirements. Thus, a single incorrect alias or comparison operator can invalidate a query while contributing little to training loss. We propose SQLoom, a constraint-aware fine-tuning framework with supervision at three levels: syntactic validity under SQL grammar and database schema, semantic alignment between query decisions and the question, and logical consistency across dependent clause decisions. SQLoom extends supervised fine-tuning with a unified set-contrastive objective favoring sets of correct outputs over minimally different incorrect ones at each level. LLM agents propose this supervision, which a SQL parser and execution on counterexample databases verify. We also release Spider-Refined, a training dataset correcting 378 flawed Spider annotations and enriching database schemas. Experiments on Spider, BIRD, and three perturbed Spider variants show that SQLoom improves execution accuracy for Qwen3-1.7B from 62.9% zero-shot to 88.7% on Spider development, reaching 89.2% on Spider test and 73.4% on BIRD development. It outperforms fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, and agent-based baselines with up to 70 billion parameters. On question perturbations, SQLoom loses at most 0.6 accuracy points versus up to 12.1 for agent-based methods. It generates SQL in a single pass at 0.42s per query, 23$\times$ faster than a GPT-4-based agent method. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of set-contrastive supervision over token-level training.

FORGE: Fault-Oriented Rework Code Generation for Executable Interlocking Assembly

Fuqiang Wang, Jiahao Fu, Ren Hefeng, Yining Qian, Chuanting Zhang, Cheng Tan, Yuwen Liu, Jingxuan Wei

Large language models have demonstrated strong capabilities in structured reasoning and code generation, yet identifying an assembly fault does not guarantee the ability to generate executable rework programs. In interlocking assemblies, a locally plausible repair program may violate blocking dependencies, omit required recovery operations, or terminate in an incorrect configuration. We identify this challenge as fault-conditioned executable rework generation, where models must jointly reason about structural failures and generate programs that restore constrained assembly states. To benchmark this capability, we introduce FORGE-Bench, containing 4,000 tasks across 26 interlocking assemblies with five assemblies held out for evaluating generalization to unseen structures. We further propose FORGE (Fault-Oriented Rework Code Generation for Executable Interlocking Assembly), a structured state-to-program framework that decomposes rework generation into Rework Structuring and Action Grounding. Rework Structuring captures fault-induced recovery dependencies, while Action Grounding maps these dependencies into state-conditioned executable actions. Experiments show that locally reasonable repair code is insufficient for reliable assembly recovery, and that connecting structural recovery reasoning with executable action realization is essential for verified target restoration.

MAGAR: Multimodal Agents for GUI-Based 3D Mechanical Assembly and Minimal Rework

Jingxuan Wei, Jiahao Fu, Fuqiang Wang, Xiaoming Wu, Yuwen Liu, Kaiwen Wei, Ming Yang, Junnan Zhu

A GUI command can be correct at the interface level yet still produce an incorrect assembly. An agent must identify the relevant components, respect their structural relationships, and determine which parts should move during recovery. We introduce MAGAR-Bench, a benchmark of 4,000 multimodal samples from 26 assembly families that separates Assembly Decision, Atomic Action, and Minimal Rework. For rework, the objective counts distinct moved parts within the validated recovery candidate set for each state, rather than the number of actions. We also introduce MAGAR, a selective correction framework built on a frozen policy obtained by supervised fine-tuning. Its key design matches correction granularity to output dependencies. Structured candidates revise assembly fields and rework scope, while complete action candidates keep native GUI primitives coupled with their parameters. A learned selector retains the original prediction unless a candidate passes a task-specific intervention threshold. On recorded states from held-out assembly families, MAGAR improves Overall, the task-balanced aggregate, from 37.50 to 41.39, with gains on all three tasks. Across 209 interventions, 70 correct an error and 22 introduce one. These results support task-specific correction while highlighting the remaining tradeoff between fixing errors and preserving reliable predictions.

IDSForge: Self-Explaining Network Intrusion Detection Through Neural Behavioral Rule Learning

Hao Fu, Jinxia Wei, Wan Wei, Chun Long, Degang Sun, Peng Gao

Anomaly-based network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) can detect previously unseen attacks by identifying deviations from benign traffic. However, deep learning-based anomaly detectors typically rely on implicit decision boundaries, and post-hoc explanations may not faithfully reflect the detection logic. This makes alerts difficult to interpret and audit. To address this issue, we present IDSForge, an anomaly-based NIDS that directly learns explicit, executable behavioral rules from benign traffic, making its detection logic interpretable by design. IDSForge uses the same rule set for detection and explanation, ensuring explanation fidelity by construction. It uses an explicit distributional autoencoder trained only on benign samples to learn axis-aligned regions of benign traffic. A high-speed rule compiler then consolidates these instance-specific regions into a compact set of feature-level interval constraints. These rules can be executed directly by popular NIDS engines, supporting high-throughput inspection with low overhead. To adapt to changes in traffic, a self-distillation co-evolver updates the model and rule set incrementally when the false-positive rate on analyst-verified traffic exceeds a target threshold. Our evaluation shows that IDSForge reduces F1 error by $5.7\times$ to $47\times$ relative to state-of-the-art anomaly-based baselines. Deployed in Suricata, IDSForge sustains a throughput of 7.8 Gbps with a median per-packet latency overhead of 3.1 $μ\text{s}$.

Dual Exam: Controlled Evaluation of Multimodal Agents and World Models

Zhefan Rao, Meng Chu, Xuan Billy Zhang, Jingfan Chen, Guohao Cai, Runyi Li, Shiyi Du, Xu Huang 等 92 位作者

World Models (WMs) can support Multimodal Agents (MAs) through simulated experience, while Agent trajectories can inform World Model refinement. Evaluating this interaction requires separate evidence about action selection and state evolution. We introduce Dual Exam, which tests Agents under fixed environment response mechanisms and World Models under fixed action interventions across physical, digital, social, and scientific domains. The Agent track compares 10 configurations on 1,088 items in 15 reporting categories. The World Model track contains 400 cases across eight scenarios; 15 configurations have full coverage and one covers six scenarios. GPT 6 Astra leads the case-weighted Agent Index at 31.3, and GPT-Image-2 leads the full-coverage WM Overall at 21.7. These scores use different tasks and metrics and are not directly comparable. A 150-case pilot of one coupled pairing records zero task successes and motivates component-level diagnosis. Results reveal uneven task performance and failures to preserve task-relevant state. Their value for predicting coupled success or sustained reciprocal learning remains to be established.

VideoStir: Understanding Long Videos via Spatio-Temporally Structured and Intent-Aware RAG

Honghao Fu The University of Queensland, Miao Xu The University of Queensland and RIKEN, Yiwei Wang University of California, Merced, Dailing Zhang Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jun Liu Lancaster University, Yujun Cai The University of Queensland

Scaling multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to long videos is constrained by limited context windows. While retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a promising remedy by organizing query-relevant visual evidence into a compact context, most existing methods (i) flatten videos into independent segments, breaking their inherent spatio-temporal structure, and (ii) depend on explicit semantic matching, which can miss cues that are implicitly relevant to the query’s intent. To overcome these limitations, we propose VideoStir, a structured and intent-aware long-video RAG framework. It firstly structures a video as a spatio-temporal graph at clip level, and then performs multi-hop retrieval to aggregate evidence across distant yet contextually related events. Furthermore, it introduces an MLLM-backed intent-relevance scorer that retrieves frames based on their alignment with the query’s reasoning intent. To support this capability, we curate IR-600K, a large-scale dataset tailored for learning frame–query intent alignment. Experiments show that VideoStir is competitive with state-of-the-art baselines without relying on auxiliary information, highlighting the promise of shifting long-video RAG from flattened semantic matching to structured, intent-aware reasoning. Codes and checkpoints are available at https://github.com/RomGai/VideoStir.

What’s Left Unsaid? Detecting and Correcting Misleading Omissions in Multimodal News Previews

Fanxiao Li, Jiaying Wu National University of Singapore, Tingchao Fu, Dayang Li, Herun Wan, Wei Zhou Yunnan University, Min-Yen Kan National University of Singapore

Even when factually correct, social-media news previews (image-headline pairs) can induce interpretation drift: by selectively omitting crucial context, they lead readers to form judgments that diverge from what the full article supports. This covert harm is subtler than explicit misinformation, yet remains underexplored. To address this gap, we develop a multi-stage pipeline that simulates preview-based and context-based understanding, enabling construction of the MM-Misleading benchmark. Using MM-Misleading, we systematically evaluate open-source LVLMs and uncover pronounced blind spots in omission-based misleadingness detection. We further propose OMGuard, which combines (1) Interpretation-Aware Fine-Tuning for misleadingness detection and (2) Rationale-Guided Misleading Content Correction, where explicit rationales guide headline rewriting to reduce misleading impressions. Experiments show that OMGuard lifts an 8B model’s detection accuracy to the level of a 235B LVLM while delivering markedly stronger end-to-end correction. Further analysis shows that misleadingness usually arises from local narrative shifts, such as missing background, instead of global frame changes, and identifies image-driven cases where text-only correction fails, underscoring the need for visual interventions.

Correct When Paired, Wrong When Split: Decoupling and Editing Modality-Specific Neurons in MLLMs

Tingchao Fu, Wenkai Wang, Fanxiao Li, Huadong Zhang, Jinhong Zhang, Dayang Li, Yunyun Dong, Renyang Liu National University of Singapore 等 9 位作者

Although Knowledge Editing provides an efficient mechanism for updating the knowledge of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), we find that current paradigms still suffer from an important yet remain underexplored issue : editing decoupling failure, where entity-related knowledge can be updated when the model is triggered by multimodal inputs (text–image query pairs), however, it often reverts to outdated pre-edit facts when the paired inputs are split into unimodal ones. Our in-depth empirical analysis reveals that the entity knowledge in MLLMs is not stored as a unified representation, but is instead distributed across disentangled modality-specific pathways. As a result, updates biased toward multimodal queries fail to propagate effectively to unimodal circuits. To bridge this gap, we propose DECODE, which explicitly disentangles and localizes modality-specific neuron groups for targeted knowledge. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DECODE consistently achieves effective knowledge updates under different modality triggers, thereby mitigating editing decoupling failures.

Is the Attention Matrix Really the Key to Self-Attention in Multivariate Long-Term Time Series Forecasting?

Xinyu Li, Kexi Chen, Jiajie Shen Fudan University, Ying Zheng, Hong Lu Fudan University, Jin Zhao Fudan University, Xin Wang Fudan University

In multivariate long-term time series forecasting, it is widely believed that the effectiveness of self-attention arises from its attention matrix. We challenge this assumption with a counterintuitive finding: our experiments, conducted on three classic and three latest Transformer models, show that dot-product attention can be replaced by element-wise operations without token interaction, such as the addition and Hadamard product, while maintaining or even improving accuracy. This leads to our central hypothesis: the effectiveness of self-attention in this task stems not from the dynamic attention matrix, but from the multi-branch feature extraction inherent in the parallel projections to Query, Key, and Value matrices and their fusion. To validate this, we construct a simple multi-branch MLP that isolates the ‘multi-branch mapping with element-wise operation’ structure from the Transformer and show that it achieves competitive performance. Our results indicate that the source of performance in self-attention has been misattributed, suggesting that the true benefit lies in the architectural principle of multi-branch mapping and fusion, not in the attention matrix.
