A.S.E 2.0: Understanding How Repository Context Impacts the Security of LLM-Generated Code

Jiongchi Yu, Keke Lian, Junqing Wang, Zhikang Fan, Zhaoxuan Li, Yongheng Huang, Ziming Zhao, Dong Zhang

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) coding assistants and agents construct a repository context before generating code. For security-sensitive code, this context decides whether the model sees the project's safeguards (e.g., authorization checks) or insecure code to imitate. However, context construction is designed almost exclusively for functional correctness, and secure-code benchmarks treat the context as fixed, so how repository context affects the security of generated code remains unclear. We construct CASE-Bench, a benchmark of 145 repository-level tasks from real CVEs in 51 projects. Each task runs in Docker, has functional tests and a proof-of-concept exploit validated in both directions, and is annotated with the repository code that enforces or undermines its security. Using CASE-Bench, we compare 13 context construction methods and six controls with six LLMs, edit single context elements, and analyze coding-agent trajectories. We find that (1) functionality-oriented context raises the functional pass rate by up to 8.2 percentage points (pp) but the secure pass rate by at most 3.7 pp, (2) withholding a safeguard lowers the secure pass rate by up to 8.1 pp, while one inserted insecure exemplar raises correct-but-exploitable code by 6.3 pp, and (3) coding agents observe the relevant safeguard in only 27-36% of trajectories. These findings inform security-aware context construction and secure-code evaluation.

原文摘要

As pretraining scales, medical language models have advanced rapidly in clinical question answering. Their ability to achieve effective physiological control through sustained intervention still lacks systematic quantitative evaluation. Type 1 diabetes provides a concrete setting: impaired insulin secretion creates dependence on exogenous insulin, with dosing continually adjusted using information about meals, exercise, illness, and glucose measurements. We introduce DiabAgent, a research suite for agentic physiological control comprising the Agentic Physiological Control (APC) framework, the DiabetSim simulator, and the SweetBench benchmark. APC controls glucose through medical-device tools, using ongoing observations to infer individual states, accumulate personal experience, and choose treatment actions. We build DiabetSim to simulate different patients, events, and device conditions for scalable virtual testing and training. Using DiabetSim, we construct SweetBench by instantiating 32 scenario designs as 212 glucose-control tasks. With Claude Opus 5.5 and a fixed decision interval of one hour, APC achieves a COGI of 73.5, compared with 71.2 for the open-source closed-loop baseline OpenAPS. Ablations further show that individual adaptation and contextual information improve glucose control. Combining high-frequency rule-based control with lower-frequency agent decisions shows potential for balancing control performance and computational cost. Our work provides a framework, simulator, and evaluation foundation for agents to participate in human physiological control.

HOLogicBench: Evaluating Higher-Order Logical Reasoning in LLMs

Yucheng Wu, Jundong Xu, Mingzhen Ju, Yue Yu, Chenpeng Wang, Haoxuan Li, Liangming Pan

原文摘要

Existing LLM logical-reasoning benchmarks largely focus on object-level inference under fixed predicates and rules, leaving higher-order reasoning over rules and policies underexplored. We introduce HOLogicBench, a 1,379-instance benchmark that systematically evaluates five representative higher-order reasoning operations, with Isabelle/HOL formalizations and proof-verified answers. Beyond answer accuracy, HOLogicBench provides solver-verified reference reasoning paths for each instance, enabling fine-grained evaluation of model-generated reasoning against valid derivations. Across 16 model configurations, average accuracy is 53.86\%, with the best configuration reaching 65.99\%. Further analyses reveal that LLMs exhibit limited alignment with valid derivations, remain vulnerable to minimal counterfactual perturbations, and display distinct failure patterns across higher-order reasoning types.

Steering for Safety, Hijacking for Profit: Trojan Threats in the LLM Activation Steering Supply Chain

原文摘要

As large language models (LLMs) are increasingly integrated into Web search, online recommendation, and intelligent decision-making, the third-party plugin ecosystem centered on model customization continues to grow. Among these, Steering Vectors guide model behavior by intervening in internal representations. However, the open plugin ecosystem also introduces new supply-chain security risks: malicious plugins can disguise themselves as having legitimate functionality and covertly manipulate outputs without significantly affecting model performance. Although this risk poses a real threat, the security issues of Steering plugins in the LLM supply-chain ecosystem still lack systematic research. This paper audits eight mainstream open-source Steering plugin libraries and reveals three structural vulnerabilities: insufficient distribution integrity verification, excessive plugin privileges, and missing runtime monitoring, which offers an attack surface for attackers. To investigate this threat, we propose a malicious plugin, IDH. Specifically, IDH designs a norm-gated mutually exclusive routing mechanism and proposes an information-decay inflection point localization method to automatically select the injection layer, thereby simultaneously achieving benign and malicious functions. To counter such threats, we propose a runtime defense framework, by suppressing anomalous activation interventions and orthogonalizing inter-layer trajectory. We evaluate IDH across five mainstream LLMs, using safety-refusal steering as the legitimate functionality and commercial recommendation manipulation as the hijack objective. Experiments covering six brands across three commercial domains demonstrate that IDH achieves an attack success rate (ASR) of up to 97.8% while preserving high refusal rates on harmful requests.

原文摘要

Scientific AI agents can autonomously carry out complex research workflows, yet these unfolded workflows often remains difficult for humans to inspect and review, limiting interpretable, controllable and effective human–AI collaboration. To address this challenge, we present a monitoring and visualization framework that records fine-grained execution events and organizes them into a directed graph that make agent workflows explicit as they proceed. The system records intermediate steps (e.g. tool calls and code executions), and renders them as real-time updated visual traces that expose workflow structure. This allows users to examine how results are produced, identify where failures emerge, and better understand agent behavior across different stages of the research process. We conduct an evaluation on complex research tasks with domain experts of interdisciplinary background in AI, neuroscience and biology. Experts report that structured traces visualization improves understanding of agent workflows, perceived interpretability, and usability for analysis and further interaction.

Beyond Self-Report: Bridging the Intention-Behavior Gap in Critical Thinking Assessment via Interpretable Multi-Agent System

原文摘要

Accurate assessment of critical thinking is historically limited by the Intention Behavior Gap in psychology: the disconnect between what individuals self-reported disposition and their actual practical behaviors. We try to bridge this gap with MASA (Multi-Agent Scenario-based Assessment), a framework that operationalizes cognitive assessment into an interpretable and interactive multi-agent workflow with Assessment Chain-of-Thought (AsCoT). Validating on both large-scale simulations (N=1,161) and human participants (N=70), we find that MASA aligns better with human expert ratings (r=0.882) than traditional gold-standard inventories (r=0.720), with an average cost of only 0.41 per participant. These results suggest that by shifting from self-report inventory to behavior-grounded dialogue, MASA offers a more accurate, cost-effective, and transparent solution for real-world cognitive evaluation.

Achieving Multi-Hop Calculation and Safe Abstention in Financial Numerical Reasoning by Metric Graph Constrained LLMs

Aoyuan Jiang Wuhan University, Liang Hong Wuhan University, Haoxuan Liu, Rui Wang

原文摘要

Financial numerical reasoning demands rigorous adherence to domain-specific logic and precise evidence foundation. However, large language models (LLMs) are prone to forced generation when confronting ambiguous evidence or complex recursive dependencies, often hallucinating values to bridge information gaps. To address this, we propose graph-bounded financial reasoning (GBFR), a neuro-symbolic framework that imposes semantic and structural constraints via a financial metric knowledge graph (FMKG). Unlike sequential generation paradigms, our approach employs a parallel graph-constrained reasoning algorithm that orchestrates specialized operators to simultaneously explore heterogeneous derivation paths of complex financial metrics. Through cross-path verification, the framework aggregates only semantically consistent results, ensuring reasoning is bounded by available context. Crucially, this approach enables safe abstention by distinguishing genuine data absence from retrieval failure, thereby preventing ungrounded fabrication. To evaluate this capability, we further construct counterfactual samples by perturbing entities, times, and metrics to synthesize unanswerable scenarios. Empirical evaluations on standard benchmarks demonstrate that GBFR significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.

From Knowing to Teaching: Scaffolding Pedagogical Decisions for LLM Agent

原文摘要

Knowing and teaching differ fundamentally: effective instruction requires transforming knowledge into forms learners can grasp. Large language models, when asked to generate lessons (a concrete form of teaching), produce content lacking pedagogical depth. We trace this failure to three decisions that expert teachers make: selecting content by recognizing each source’s instructional role, sequencing topics so foundations precede applications, and synthesizing components into a unified whole. To scaffold these decisions, we introduce TeachCraft, a framework with three agents: Explorer classifies sources by pedagogical intent to guide selection; Planner orders objectives from foundational to advanced; Generator produces lesson materials through a schema that ensures consistency across components. To evaluate this approach, we construct LessonBench, 40 expert-designed lessons paired with two to five heterogeneous source documents, on which TeachCraft achieves 67.8% win rate in human evaluation and 79.6% in LLM-based evaluation against eight baselines, with ablations confirming that each decision contributes independently to overall lesson quality.[Source code is available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/TeachCraft-1672]

SimPBL: A Multi-Agent Framework for Project-Based Learning

Daniel Zhang-Li, Joy Jia Yin Lim, Binglin Liu, Shangqing Tu, Zijun Yao, Hao Peng Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Jifan Yu, Haoxuan Li Tsinghua University 等 19 位作者

原文摘要

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an important learning method that promotes understanding and acquiring practical skills through training learners through a project. However, effective PBL often requires sustained orchestration and collaboration, but existing LLM-based learning tools provide partial assistance without explicitly modeling these roles, and overly comprehensive help provided by LLM can reduce learner autonomy. We propose SimPBL, a multi-agent framework with an orchestrator agent that provides adaptive scaffolding from interaction logs and collaborator agents that support project work through boundary-aware collaboration. We conduct comprehensive evaluation to study the effectiveness of SimPBL, where we observe a 14% improvement in learner examination score. Results from extensive studies further highlights the ability of SimPBL to manage learning behavior and improve learning experience. 原文摘要

Infographics are composite visual artifacts that combine data visualizations with textual and illustrative elements to communicate information. While recent text-to-image (T2I) models can generate aesthetically appealing images, their reliability in generating infographics remains unclear. Generated infographics may appear correct at first glance but contain easily overlooked issues, such as distorted data encoding or incorrect textual content. We present IGenBench, the first benchmark for evaluating the reliability of text-to-infographic generation, comprising 600 curated test cases spanning 30 infographic types. We design an automated evaluation framework that decomposes reliability verification into atomic yes/no questions based on a taxonomy of 10 question types. We employ multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to verify each question, yielding question-level accuracy (Q-ACC) and infographic-level accuracy (I-ACC). We comprehensively evaluate 10 state-of-the-art T2I models on IGenBench. Our systematic analysis reveals key insights for future model development: (i) a three-tier performance hierarchy with the top model achieving Q-ACC of 0.90 but I-ACC of only 0.49; (ii) data-related dimensions emerging as universal bottlenecks (e.g., Data Completeness: 0.21); and (iii) the challenge of achieving end-to-end correctness across all models.
