On-Policy Self-Distillation with Teacher Evolution

Shufan Shen, Zhongni Hou, Chao Bi, Yufei Zhang, Guojun Yin, Shuhui Wang

On-Policy Self-Distillation (OPSD), which aligns a student model's token-level distribution with that of its self-teacher prompted by privileged context, has emerged as a promising direction to mitigate reward sparsity in sequence-level post-training paradigms. However, OPSD often fails to achieve continuous performance gains during training. In this paper, we find that the model's limited self-teaching capability underlies this phenomenon by generating unreliable guidance on certain samples. To address this problem, we propose Teacher-Evolution Self-Distillation (TESD), which enables the self-teacher to generate rollouts and receive environmental feedback based on task correctness and context independence. First, using these rewards as training objectives, we perform teacher-oriented optimization to continuously enhance the model's self-teaching capability during distillation. Second, by estimating teacher guidance reliability from these rewards, we apply adaptive student-oriented optimization to down-weight samples with unreliable guidance. Extensive experiments across multiple datasets and model scales show that TESD consistently outperforms representative token-level and sequence-level methods, highlighting the necessity of improving supervision quality in OPSD.

We introduce Nemotron 3.5 Super and Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, open and efficient Mixture-of-Experts Hybrid Mamba-Transformer models designed for reasoning, long-context understanding, and agentic workloads. Super is a 120B-parameter, 12B-active multimodal model, while Lightning is a smaller 30B-parameter, 3B-active text model; both designed for efficient deployment. Both models combine large-scale distillation, long-context training, and native speculative decoding, while Super further incorporates Indic continued pretraining and agentic software-engineering mid-training. We develop a comprehensive post-training pipeline spanning supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning (RLVR and RLHF), complemented in Super by specialized teacher training and multi- teacher on-policy distillation (MOPD). This transforms Super from a text-only base model into a multimodal agent capable of reasoning over text, images, video, and interactive tool environments. We further explore test-time scaling through parallel agent execution and self-verification. Across training and deployment, we jointly optimize capability and efficiency. Indic continued pretraining improves Indian-language benchmarks by up to 9.82 percentage points, while agentic mid-training strengthens software-engineering capabilities and robustness across agent harnesses. The post-trained Super model achieves 51.78% on SWE-bench Pro, surpassing Nemotron 3 Ultra despite using approximately 4.6x fewer active parameters. Post-training MTP boosting improves speculative- decoding acceptance length by up to 21.8% under probabilistic draft sampling, while NVFP4 quantization achieves 99.62% median accuracy recovery relative to BF16. Inference optimizations enable up to 4,856 output tokens/s/GPU on GB200 while sustaining at least 50 tokens/s/user.

Physical structure as an organizing principle for universal Hamiltonian learning

Mingkang Liu, Zhanghao Zhouyin, Guanghui Wang, Daye Zheng, Lei Shen, Qiangqiang Gu

Density functional theory (DFT) gives the electronic structure of materials, but its cost limits large-supercell calculations and materials screening. Machine-learned Hamiltonians bypass the self-consistent cycle but are usually system-specific; universal ones could cover new compositions and disordered solids. Such models must generalize across chemistry and keep downstream properties physical, while staying inexpensive for large cells. Here we introduce UniTB, a universal E(3) equivariant Hamiltonian representation framework that integrates physical priors rooted in density-functional tight-binding theory with deep learning. UniTB's network, which corrects a prior Hamiltonian, generalizes across chemistry through a mixture of experts routed by that prior and a charge-equilibration head as in self-consistent-charge tight binding. A projection bounds band shifts from the prior, suppressing spurious states and keeping downstream properties physical. We provide the fastest SO(2) tensor-product GPU kernels for the network. The variant UniTB-Flash assembles its prior from two-center tables at $O(N)$ cost for $N$ atoms, against $O(N\log N)$ on a grid. Trained on 29,242 crystals, UniTB reaches a 0.48 meV matrix-element error on nonmagnetic test crystals spanning 68 elements. Without amorphous training data, both models agree with DFT optics and conductivity of amorphous Ge-Sb-Te. UniTB-Flash ranks candidates with no significant difference from UniTB, whose property values are more accurate; together they screen 16,195 crystals for five application domains of industrial relevance.

HiFiPix: Bringing High-Fidelity Real-World Super-Resolution Back to Pixel Space

Wenjie Li, Du Chen, Hui Wang, Linlong Fan, Youwei Lv, Zeyi Chen, Zehan Chen, Jinwei Chen 等 11 位作者

Diffusion-based real-world image super-resolution suffers from limited reconstruction fidelity due to information loss in VAE-based latent representations. Recently, pixel-space diffusion models offer a promising high-faithfulness alternative by avoiding latent compression, but adapting them to Real-ISR remains challenging due to inherent patch boundary artifacts and degraded generative capability. To address the issues and maximize the potential of pretrained pixel-space diffusion models, we propose HiFiPix, a pixel-space Real-ISR framework capable of ultra high-fidelity reconstruction and fine-grained visual generation effects. To suppress patch boundary artifacts, we penalize unrealistic high-frequency periodic components with a Cross-Scale Wavelet Discriminator (CWSD) for image-level supervision, and Mixup Contrastive Self-Distillation (MixCSD) for intermediate representation regularization. Furthermore, we uncover a heterogeneous generation-fidelity trade-off across low-rank adapters (LoRA) and propose Selective LoRA Pruning (LoRA-SP) to adaptively prune LoRA layers, enhancing generative capability with minimal deterioration of reconstruction fidelity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HiFiPix consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art latent space methods in terms of both restoration accuracy and perceptual quality by a large margin. Code and models will be released.

O2D-MedNet: An Optimization-Aware Dual-Domain Framework for Robust Medical Image Segmentation

Shipeng Hu, Miaohui Wang, Jing Qin, Sukun Tian, Yuchun Sun

Medical image segmentation (MIS) remains challenging due to composite degradations and multi-scale geometric variations, which jointly impair lesion-background separability, structural consistency, and optimization stability. Existing single-stream frameworks entangle heterogeneous cues within a single representation pathway, while hybrid-stream approaches often rely on generic or static fusion, limiting effective coordination across domains and failing to explicitly address optimization instability. To overcome these limitations, we propose a new optimization-aware dual-domain framework for MIS (O2D-MedNet). First, a degradation-aware dualdomain interaction (DDI) module integrates Fourier - and Wavelet-domain features to suppress degradation-sensitive responses while preserving structural and fine-detail information. Second, a cross-backbone contour-guided fusion (CGF) module enables selective interaction between CNN-based local detail modeling and visual state-space-based global structure modeling, improving boundary accuracy and representation consistency. Third, a gradient-context optimization (GCO) strategy stabilizes training by adaptively adjusting learning dynamics based on loss trends and gradient statistics, mitigating instability caused by class imbalance and heterogeneous sample difficulty. Extensive experiments on six benchmarks demonstrate consistent improvements over state-of-the-art MIS methods across multiple imaging modalities. Further analyses confirm enhanced sensitivity, structural consistency, and optimization stability, validating the effectiveness of the proposed O2D-MedNet for robust MIS under heterogeneous conditions.

PhyVer: Physics-Grounded Material Claim Verification with Multi-Fidelity Physical Evidence

Jianpeng Chen, Wangzhi Zhan Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Haohui Wang, Brian Mayer Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dongqi Fu Meta, Dawei Zhou Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Material claims in papers, patents, etc., often involve physical feasibility (e.g., stability under conditions, property consistency), not just textual feasibility. Yet most claim verifiers operate over language, therefore producing ungrounded judgments. On the other hand, directfirst-principles verification (e.g., density functional theory, DFT) is inflexible and hard to invoke from underspecified free-form claims. Therefore, we introduce PhyVer, a physics-grounded material claim verification system that bridges this gap by translating claimsinto multi-fidelity physical evidence and interpretable verdicts. To support human-in-the-loop inspection, we present an interactive web interface that visualizes the instantiated structure, optimization trajectories, DFT summaries, and the final decision. On expert-labeled claims, PhyVer improves agreement with experts over text-only GPT-5.1, reducing MAE from 1.54 to 1.20 and Signed MAE from0.95 to 0.82, and increasing Accuracy@±1 from 50% to 70%.

Better Literary Translation: A Multi-Aspect Data Generation and LLM Training Approach

Zhihao Lin, Ziqi Zhu, Hao Huang, Guanghui Wang, Peiyang He

Literary translation poses unique challenges due to the scarcity of high-quality annotated data and the need to balance expression fluency with literary effect. We present a multi-aspect iterative refinement framework that generates high-quality translation references and preference data through specialized LLM translators, each targeting a distinct quality dimension. We leverage the generated data for supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. Experiments show that our generated references outperform the original ground truth for SFT by 8.65 CEA100 points. For reinforcement learning, we find that DPO leads to performance degradation in this setting, while leveraging an explicit reward model for GRPO yields an additional 1.51 point improvement. We attribute this to the stability of two-stage training and GRPO’s online exploration capability. Our resulting models, LitMT-8B and LitMT-14B, achieve 67.25 and 69.07 CEA100 respectively on the MetaphorTrans English-to-Chinese literary translation benchmark, competitive with Claude Sonnet 4.5 at 68.43, and demonstrate strong generalization to out-of-domain literary work (i.e., O. Henry).

MoEC: A Memory-Routed Mixture-of-Experts Controller for Adaptive Minecraft Control

Hui Wu, Chao Xu, Jianghui Wang, Ziqiong Liu, Dong Li, Yiwei Dai, Emad Barsoum AMD

Embodied agents in open-ended environments such as Minecraft increasingly adopt planner–controller architectures, with large language models acting as high-level planners. While planning has advanced rapidly, control remains underexplored. Existing systems commonly rely on a monolithic policy to execute subgoals across varying contexts, forcing incompatible behaviors into a shared parameter space and causing interference that scaling only partially mitigates. To address this, we propose MoEC, a Memory-Routed Mixture-of-Experts Controller for Adaptive Minecraft Control. MoEC routes via a subgoal-indexed, non-parametric expert memory and regulates capacity through failure-triggered expert growth and redundancy-aware consolidation. This design enables continual adaptation without full retraining, while maintaining parameter efficiency and with bounded inference cost. We evaluate MoEC on diverse and compositional Minecraft tasks, demonstrating significant gains in adaptability, robustness, and execution consistency over strong baselines, yielding a scalable and efficient alternative for open-ended control.

VRPO: Rethinking Value Modeling for Robust RL under Noisy Supervision in LLM Post-Training

Dingwei Zhu, Shihan Dou, Zhiheng Xi, Senjie Jin, Guoqiang Zhang, Jiazheng Zhang, Junjie Ye, Mingxu Chai 等 19 位作者

Reinforcement Learning (RL) in real-world environments often suffers from ambiguous or incomplete reward supervision, which undermines policy stability and generalization. Such noise may cause models to ignore key information or even collapse in advantage estimation. We find that a strong value model is essential for absorbing unstable signals and producing reliable advantages, offering denser and more robust supervision than the reward model. To better optimize noisy supervision, we propose VRPO, a framework that enhances value modeling for robust RL in LLM post-training. VRPO integrates (1) auxiliary losses guided by entropy and perplexity from a frozen language model, and (2) a variational information bottleneck, enabling the value model to filter noise and capture key words. This design allows the value model to correct noise rewards and generate more reliable advantage estimates, transforming it from a passive predictor into an active noise regulator. Experiments on multi-turn dialogue, math reasoning, and science QA with both rule-based and model-based rewards show that VRPO consistently outperforms baselines such as PPO and GRPO. Our work highlight the central role of the value model in Robust RL and provide a principled and practical approach to policy optimization under noisy supervision.

Fair-CCD: Mitigating Bias in Large Language Models for Tabular Classification Through Context-Contrastive Decoding

Donghan Liu, Han Sun, Zhaohui Wang, Qin Li East China Normal University, Min Zhang

While recent studies show the effectiveness of in-context learning (ICL) for tabular data prediction, they also reveal significant fairness issues in large language models (LLMs). Prior work to mitigate fairness issues often employs interventions relying on subjective demonstration selection. Its effectiveness varies significantly with the specific demonstration content, leading to low controllability. Moreover, the improvement of fairness is highly unstable across different models and tasks. To address the challenges of low controllability and limited stability in fairness interventions, we propose Fairness-Aware Context-Contrastive Decoding (Fair-CCD). Fair-CCD first constructs Structural Bias Templates (SBTs), motivated by behavioral patterns observed in demonstrations, to encode the relationship between sensitive attributes and predicted labels in a structured and controllable form. During inference, Fair-CCD injects multiple SBTs and contrasts the model’s responses, generating two differential signals that guide fairness adjustment and preserve task performance. By leveraging attention signals to scale decoding adjustments guided by the difference signals, Fair-CCD achieves stable and adaptive bias mitigation across models and tasks. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that Fair-CCD consistently improves fairness metrics without degrading task accuracy.

ES4R: Speech Encoding Based on Prepositive Affective Modeling for Empathetic Response Generation

Zhuoyue Gao, Xiaohui Wang, Xiaocui Yang Northeastern University, Wen Zhang Northeastern University, Daling Wang, Shi Feng Northeastern University, China, Yifei Zhang

Empathetic speech dialogue requires not only understanding linguistic content but also perceiving rich paralinguistic information such as prosody, tone, and emotional intensity for affective understandings. Existing speech-to-speech large language models either rely on ASR transcription or use encoders to extract latent representations, often weakening affective information and contextual coherence in multi-turn dialogues. To address this, we propose ES4R, a framework for speech-based empathetic response generation. Our core innovation lies in explicitly modeling structured affective context before speech encoding, rather than relying on implicit learning by the encoder or explicit emotion supervision. Specifically, we introduce a dual-level attention mechanism to capture turn-level affective states and dialogue-level affective dynamics. The resulting affective representations are then integrated with textual semantics through speech-guided cross-modal attention to generate empathetic responses. For speech output, we employ energy-based strategy selection and style fusion to achieve empathetic speech synthesis. ES4R consistently outperforms strong baselines in both automatic and human evaluations and remains robust across different Large Language Model (LLM) backbones. Towards Fine-Grained and Multi-Granular Contrastive Language-Speech Pre-training

Yifan Yang, Bing Han, Hui Wang, Wei Wang, Ziyang Ma, Long Zhou Tencent, Zengrui Jin Tsinghua University, Guanrou Yang 等 11 位作者

Modeling fine-grained speaking styles remains challenging for language-speech representation pre-training, as existing speech-text models are typically trained with coarse captions or task-specific supervision, and scalable fine-grained style annotations are unavailable. We present FCaps, a large-scale dataset with fine-grained free-text style descriptions, encompassing 47k hours of speech and 19M fine-grained captions annotated via a novel end-to-end pipeline that directly grounds detailed captions in audio, thereby avoiding the error propagation caused by LLM-based rewriting in existing cascaded pipelines. Evaluations using LLM-as-a-judge demonstrate that our annotations surpass existing cascaded annotations in terms of correctness, coverage, and naturalness. Building on FCaps, we propose CLSP, a contrastive language-speech pre-trained model that integrates global and fine-grained supervision, enabling unified representations across multiple granularities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CLSP learns fine-grained and multi-granular speech-text representations that perform reliably across global and fine-grained speech-text retrieval, zero-shot paralinguistic classification, and speech style similarity scoring, with strong alignment to human judgments. Code and dataset are publicly available at https://github.com/yfyeung/CLSP.

AutoRAN: Automated Hijacking of Safety Reasoning in Large Reasoning Models

Jiacheng Liang, Tanqiu Jiang State University of New York at Stony Brook, Yuhui Wang State University of New York at Stony Brook, Rongyi Zhu Stony Brook University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Fenglong Ma Pennsylvania State University, Ting Wang State University of New York at Stony Brook

This paper presents AutoRAN, the first framework to automate the hijacking of internal safety reasoning in large reasoning models (LRMs). At its core, AutoRAN pioneers an execution simulation paradigm that leverages a weaker but less-aligned model to simulate execution reasoning for initial hijacking attempts and iteratively refine attacks by exploiting reasoning patterns leaked through the target LRM’s refusals. This approach steers the target model to bypass its own safety guardrails and elaborate on harmful instructions. We evaluate AutoRAN against state-of-the-art LRMs, including GPT-o3/o4-mini and Gemini-2.5-Flash, across multiple benchmarks (AdvBench, HarmBench, and StrongReject). Results show that AutoRAN achieves approaching 100% success rate within one or few turns, effectively neutralizing reasoning-based defenses even when evaluated by robustly aligned external models. This work reveals that the transparency of the reasoning process itself creates a critical and exploitable attack surface, highlighting the urgent need for new defenses that protect models’ reasoning traces rather than merely their final outputs.

SpeechLLM-as-Judges: Towards General and Interpretable Speech Quality Evaluation

Hui Wang, Jinghua Zhao, Yifan Yang, Shujie Liu, Junyang Chen Nankai University, Yanzhe Zhang, Shiwan Zhao, Jinyu Li Microsoft 等 12 位作者

Generative speech technologies are progressing rapidly, but evaluating the perceptual quality of synthetic speech remains a core challenge. Existing methods typically rely on scalar scores or binary decisions, which lack interpretability and generalization across tasks and languages. We present SpeechLLM-as-Judges, a new paradigm for enabling large language models (LLMs) to conduct structured and explanation-based speech quality evaluation. To support this direction, we introduce SpeechEval, a large-scale dataset containing 32,207 multilingual speech clips and 128,754 annotations spanning four tasks: quality assessment, pairwise comparison, improvement suggestion, and deepfake detection. Based on this resource, we develop SQ-LLM, a speech-quality-aware LLM trained with chain-of-thought reasoning and reward optimization to improve capability. Experimental results show that SQ-LLM delivers strong performance across tasks and languages, revealing the potential of this paradigm for advancing speech quality evaluation. The relevant code, models, and data are publicly available at https://github.com/NKU-HLT/SpeechLLM-as-Judges.

Soft Orthogonal Low-Rank Adaptation for Knowledge Sharing in Large Language Model Continual Learning

Yitong Wang China Mobile Jiutian Artificial Intelligence Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Xue Han, WenChun Gao, Qian Hu China Mobile Research Institute, Jiahui Wang China Mobile Jiutian AI Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Ziqing Wang, Lijun Mei China Mobile Communications Company Limited Research Institute, Junlan Feng

When large language models are used in real-world scenarios, continual learning (CL) becomes a non-trivial problem. In particular, continual learning with modern LLMs is challenged both by the substantial computational costs induced by their massive parameter scale, and by the limitations of current CL methods, which are mainly designed to mitigate catastrophic forgetting while neglecting knowledge sharing across tasks. We further observe that models with stronger performance exhibit stronger inter-task connections. In light of the above challenges and findings, we propose Attribution Scores-based Soft Orthogonality Low-Rank Adaptation (ASO-LoRA), an effective and efficient framework that simultaneously facilitates knowledge transfer while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Specifically, ASO-LoRA initially assigns task-specific parameter subspaces for new tasks utilizing multi-LoRA modules, enabling for efficient training and inference without relying on task labels. Then, ASO-LoRA leverages attribution scores to evaluate task similarity and employs soft orthogonality between task-specific subspaces, guiding gradient updates in directions that promote parameter isolation, achieving a balance between knowledge transfer and preservation. Experiments are carried out on both the T5-large and the LLaMA2-7B, showing ASO-LoRA’s superior performance and suitability as a plug-in CL solution for general Transformer-based LLMs. Code is available at https://github.com/736619821/ASO-LORA.

LLMEval-Fair: A Large-Scale Longitudinal Study on Robust and Fair Evaluation of Large Language Models

Ming Zhang Fudan University, Yujiong Shen, Jingyi Deng, Yuhui Wang, Huayu Sha, Kexin Tan The University of Tokyo, The University of Tokyo and Fudan University, Qiyuan Peng, Yue Zhang ATOM INFINITE PTE. LTD. 等 22 位作者

Existing evaluation of Large Language Models (LLMs) on static benchmarks is vulnerable to data contamination and leaderboard overfitting, critical issues that obscure true model capabilities. To address this, we introduce LLMEval-Fair, a framework for dynamic evaluation of LLMs. LLMEval-Fair is built on a proprietary bank of 220k graduate-level questions, from which it dynamically samples unseen test sets for each evaluation run. Its automated pipeline ensures integrity via contamination-resistant data curation, a novel anti-cheating architecture, and a calibrated LLM-as-a-judge process achieving 90% agreement with human experts, complemented by a relative ranking system for fair comparison. An 30-month longitudinal study of nearly 60 leading models reveals a performance ceiling on knowledge memorization and exposes data contamination vulnerabilities undetectable by static benchmarks. The framework demonstrates exceptional robustness in ranking stability and consistency, providing strong empirical validation for the dynamic evaluation paradigm. LLMEval-Fair offers a robust and credible methodology for assessing the true capabilities of LLMs beyond leaderboard scores, promoting the development of more trustworthy evaluation standards.
