MLAIRE: Multilingual Language-Aware Information Retrieval Evaluation Protocol

Youngjoon Jang, Seongtae Hong, Hyeonseok Moon, Heuiseok Lim

Multilingual Information Retrieval is increasingly important in real-world search settings, where users issue queries over mixed-language corpora. Existing evaluations mainly reward language-agnostic semantic relevance, treating relevant passages equally regardless of language. Yet retrieval utility also depends on the language of the retrieved passages: users may prefer results they can read and verify in the query language, and query--passage language mismatch can complicate downstream grounding and answer verification in Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems. To evaluate this language-aware dimension, we introduce MLAIRE, a Multilingual Language-Aware Information Retrieval Evaluation protocol that disentangles cross-lingual semantic retrieval from query-language preference. MLAIRE constructs controlled pools with parallel passages across languages, enabling measurement of semantic retrieval accuracy and query-language preference when equivalent translations are available. We propose language-aware metrics, including Language Preference Rate (LPR) and Lang-nDCG, together with a 4-way decomposition separating semantic and query-language preference failures. Evaluating 31 dense, sparse, and late-interaction retrievers, we show that standard metrics obscure distinct behaviors: semantically strong retrievers may return correct content in a non-query language, while retrievers with stronger query-language preference may retrieve less semantically relevant passages.

AgentHop: A Diagnostic Benchmark for Agentic Multi-Hop Question Answering over Scientific Citation Graphs

Chanhee Park, Jeongho Yoon, Sungbin Han, Hyeonseok Moon, Heuiseok Lim

Agentic tasks require a large language model to interact with the world, navigating information and gathering evidence across multiple steps with restricted resources. Due to this complexity, agentic task failures arise from various sources, and pinpointing these failure causes is essential to diagnose and improve agentic systems. Existing benchmarks, however, tend to focus on a single leaderboard score, leaving the underlying failure modes opaque. To fill this gap, we introduce AgentHop, a diagnostic benchmark of 1,011 multiple-choice questions paired with a controlled seven-tool sandbox under fixed token, turn, and tool-call constraints. AgentHop reveals model vulnerabilities by dissecting a single accuracy score along four axes of agent operation: retrieval, synthesis, tool-call, and resource management. Across 19 models, we find that behavior clusters by model family, with tool-call signatures revealing distinct family fingerprints: GPT models commit early, Anthropic and GLM checkpoints verify before committing, DeepSeek and Kimi over-search, and Gemini-3 Pro stays balanced. Decomposed axes further expose within-family structure: Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 land within one accuracy point yet diverge on retrieval-versus-synthesis emphasis, with Opus retrieving more and Sonnet synthesizing better. We release the full benchmark set and the harness to support diagnostic agent benchmarking.

Towards Privacy-Preserving Large Language Model: Text-free Inference Through Alignment and Adaptation

Jeongho Yoon Korea University, Chanhee Park Korea University, Yongchan Chun, Hyeonseok Moon Samsung Electronics, Heuiseok Lim

Current LLM-based services typically require users to submit raw text regardless of its sensitivity. While intuitive, such practice introduces substantial privacy risks, as unauthorized access may expose personal, medical, or legal information. Although prior defenses strived to mitigate these risks, they often incur substantial computational overhead and degrade model performance. To overcome this privacy-efficiency trade-off, we introduce Privacy-Preserving Fine-Tuning (PPFT), a novel training pipeline that eliminates the need for transmitting raw prompt text while maintaining a favorable balance between privacy preservation and model utility for both clients and service providers. Our approach operates in two stages: first, we train a client-side encoder together with a server-side projection module and LLM, enabling the server to condition on k-pooled prompt embeddings instead of raw text; second, we fine-tune the projection module and LLM on private, domain-specific data using noise-injected embeddings, allowing effective adaptation without exposing plain text prompts and requiring access to the decoder’s internal parameters. Extensive experiments on domain-specific and general benchmarks demonstrate that PPFT achieves a striking balance between privacy and utility, maintaining competitive performance with minimal degradation compared to noise-free upper bounds.
