Residual Attribute Leakage Is an Interface: Auditing Privacy Evaluation After Text De-identification

Tuan Thanh Duong, Joongmin Shin, Jeongho Yoon, Junyoung Son, Heuiseok Lim

原文摘要

A privacy evaluation of de-identified text asks a language model (the adversary) to guess a person's protected attribute. We introduce a prior-normalised clipped leakage score of its confidence gain on the true value and audit the conclusions drawn from it. Each verdict depends on an evaluation interface (the queried person, answer options, prior, adversary model and scoring rule), which we vary on fixed releases of three corpora. In a stress test, an editor that writes the opposite-sex form at the same spans a redaction editor would redact misleads the adversary about most people, yet ranks first among editors scored on the same MedQA entries under this score, as under attack accuracy and proper scoring rules read as privacy. A relabelling-invariant reading of AUC ranks that editor sixth of eight, and a rule-aware adversary recovers the attribute from the same text. On ordinary releases most verdict changes are gains or losses of separability; of six choices varied over all pairs, only the adversary reverses comparisons (5 of its 124 changes), and the query can target the wrong person. SACC, a traceable editor we build as the instrument, lets us ablate two editing principles and show where its advantage does not hold.

AgentHop: A Diagnostic Benchmark for Agentic Multi-Hop Question Answering over Scientific Citation Graphs

Chanhee Park, Jeongho Yoon, Sungbin Han, Hyeonseok Moon, Heuiseok Lim

原文摘要

Agentic tasks require a large language model to interact with the world, navigating information and gathering evidence across multiple steps with restricted resources. Due to this complexity, agentic task failures arise from various sources, and pinpointing these failure causes is essential to diagnose and improve agentic systems. Existing benchmarks, however, tend to focus on a single leaderboard score, leaving the underlying failure modes opaque. To fill this gap, we introduce AgentHop, a diagnostic benchmark of 1,011 multiple-choice questions paired with a controlled seven-tool sandbox under fixed token, turn, and tool-call constraints. AgentHop reveals model vulnerabilities by dissecting a single accuracy score along four axes of agent operation: retrieval, synthesis, tool-call, and resource management. Across 19 models, we find that behavior clusters by model family, with tool-call signatures revealing distinct family fingerprints: GPT models commit early, Anthropic and GLM checkpoints verify before committing, DeepSeek and Kimi over-search, and Gemini-3 Pro stays balanced. Decomposed axes further expose within-family structure: Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 land within one accuracy point yet diverge on retrieval-versus-synthesis emphasis, with Opus retrieving more and Sonnet synthesizing better. We release the full benchmark set and the harness to support diagnostic agent benchmarking.

Towards Privacy-Preserving Large Language Model: Text-free Inference Through Alignment and Adaptation

Jeongho Yoon Korea University, Chanhee Park Korea University, Yongchan Chun, Hyeonseok Moon Samsung Electronics, Heuiseok Lim

原文摘要

Current LLM-based services typically require users to submit raw text regardless of its sensitivity. While intuitive, such practice introduces substantial privacy risks, as unauthorized access may expose personal, medical, or legal information. Although prior defenses strived to mitigate these risks, they often incur substantial computational overhead and degrade model performance. To overcome this privacy-efficiency trade-off, we introduce Privacy-Preserving Fine-Tuning (PPFT), a novel training pipeline that eliminates the need for transmitting raw prompt text while maintaining a favorable balance between privacy preservation and model utility for both clients and service providers. Our approach operates in two stages: first, we train a client-side encoder together with a server-side projection module and LLM, enabling the server to condition on k-pooled prompt embeddings instead of raw text; second, we fine-tune the projection module and LLM on private, domain-specific data using noise-injected embeddings, allowing effective adaptation without exposing plain text prompts and requiring access to the decoder’s internal parameters. Extensive experiments on domain-specific and general benchmarks demonstrate that PPFT achieves a striking balance between privacy and utility, maintaining competitive performance with minimal degradation compared to noise-free upper bounds.

LangSAE Editing: Improving Multilingual Information Retrieval via Post-hoc Language Identity Removal

Dongjun Kim Upstage, Jeongho Yoon Korea University, Chanjun Park Soongsil University, Heuiseok Lim

原文摘要

Dense retrieval in multilingual settings often searches over mixed-language collections, yet multilingual embeddings encode language identity alongside semantics. This language signal can inflate similarity for same-language pairs and crowd out relevant evidence written in other languages. We propose LANGSAE EDITING, a post-hoc sparse autoencoder trained on pooled embeddings that enables controllable removal of language-identity signal directly in vector space. The method identifies language-associated latent units using cross-language activation statistics, suppresses these units at inference time, and reconstructs embeddings in the original dimensionality, making it compatible with existing vector databases without retraining the base encoder or re-encoding raw text. Experiments across multiple languages show consistent improvements in ranking quality and cross-language coverage, with especially strong gains for script-distinct languages.
