The Physical Cost of Context: Quality-Constrained Resource Accounting for Coding Agents

Zhongming Yu, Yitong Ma, Hengjia Yu, Boqin Yuan, Xiangye Lin, Hejia Zhang, Jishen Zhao

原文摘要

Coding agents resend a growing context on every model call, and context policies are usually judged by the prompt tokens they save. Executed work also depends on call count and prefix reuse: a caching runtime prefills only the tokens after the longest cached prefix. A shorter prompt can therefore cost more if it rewrites cached history. Our quality-gated protocol splits executed prefill into logical prompt minus reused prefix and measures KV residency, time, and energy. On 450 localization cases derived from SWE-rebench V2, preloading ten retrieved blocks (Eager) and adding anchored history compaction (Compact) both pass a five-point non-inferiority gate. In a separate 900-cell study, Eager cuts model calls by 35.7% and the GPU-energy proxy by 33.2% against on-demand search (Grep); Compact saves nothing further. Enabling prefix caching leaves Eager's prompt volume similar (+8.3%; its 95% CI spans zero) but cuts its uncached prefill by 67.7%. Deleting history can turn a token saving into extra work. With mini-SWE-agent on 100 SWE-bench Verified instances, keeping only the last five observations (Mask-5) cuts Eager's prompt volume by 33.3% but loses 135.9k reusable tokens per task. Uncached prefill rises by 608.5%, the energy proxy by 125.6%, and the policy misses the quality gate. Policies thus save physical work by shortening the trajectory and can multiply it by editing reusable history.

SAFEVPR: Patch-Based Verification with Empirical FDR Control for Cross-Condition Sequence Visual Place Recognition

Ha Sier, Jiaqiang Zhang, Zhuo Zou, Xianjia Yu, Tomi Westerlund

原文摘要

Sequence-based visual place recognition (VPR) for loop closure and robot relocalization must decide whether the retrieved top-1 candidate should be accepted. Conformal calibration can set this accept/reject threshold, but its finite-sample guarantees require exchangeability between calibration and deployment, a requirement that cross-condition deployment violates. We therefore claim no formal guarantee under condition shift: this paper instead asks which verification score and calibration design keep a target false-discovery rate (FDR) empirically satisfied across realistic appearance change. We present SAFEVPR, a non-trainable pipeline that replaces the backbone cosine similarity with a mutual-nearest-neighbour (MNN) patch score from frozen DINOv2 features, and flat Learn-Then-Test (LTT) calibration with per-bin Clopper-Pearson thresholds. Across 23 cross-condition ground-vehicle setups (Oxford RobotCar, NCLT, St Lucia; three frozen backbones), SAFEVPR meets the FDR target on 23/23 setups at alpha = 0.10 (mean accepted FDR 0.014, mean TPR 0.75) and on 22/23 at alpha = 0.05 with 22 retaining non-trivial coverage (best cosine variant, cosine+LTT: 22/23 valid but 17 non-trivial); under leave-one-dataset-out calibration, validity drops to 20/23 with 14 retaining useful coverage (strongest cosine baseline: 16/23 and 10), and on texture-poor scenery (Nordland) the verifier is uninformative and the system abstains entirely, as it does everywhere at alpha = 0.01; we report these as limitations. In a pose-graph relocalization study, gating loop-closure constraints reduces erroneous constraints by 29.6x and cuts the median trajectory error from 95.5 m to 9.7 m. Algorithms for the Shortest Vector Problem in $2$-dimensional Lattices, Revisited

Lihao Zhao, Chengliang Tian, Jingguo Bi, Guangwu Xu, Jia Yu

原文摘要

Efficiently solving the Shortest Vector Problem (SVP) in two-dimensional lattices holds practical significance in cryptography and computational geometry. While simpler than its high-dimensional counterpart, two-dimensional SVP motivates scalable solutions for high-dimensional lattices and benefits applications like sequence cipher cryptanalysis involving large integers. In this work, we first propose a novel definition of reduced bases and develop an efficient adaptive lattice reduction algorithm \textbf{CrossEuc} that strategically applies the Euclidean algorithm across dimensions. Building on this framework, we introduce \textbf{HVec}, a vectorized generalization of the Half-GCD algorithm originally defined for integers, which can efficiently halve the bit-length of two vectors and may have independent interest. By iteratively invoking \textbf{HVec}, our optimized algorithm \textbf{HVecSBP} achieves a reduced basis in $O(\log n M(n) )$ time for arbitrary input bases with bit-length $n$, where $M(n)$ denotes the cost of multiplying two $n$-bit integers. Compared to existing algorithms, our design is applicable to general forms of input lattices, eliminating the cost of pre-converting input bases to Hermite Normal Form (HNF). The comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that for the input lattice bases in HNF, the optimized algorithm \textbf{HVecSBP} achieves at least a $13.5\times$ efficiency improvement compared to existing methods. For general-form input lattice bases, converting them to HNF before applying \textbf{HVecSBP} offers only marginal advantages in extreme cases where the two basis vectors are nearly degenerate. However, as the linear dependency between input basis vectors decreases, directly employing \textbf{HVecSBP} yields increasingly significant efficiency gains, outperforming hybrid approaches that rely on prior \textbf{HNF} conversion.

MedCUA-Bench: A Screenshot-Only Benchmark for Clinical Computer-Use Agents

Jia Yu, Zilong Wang, Xinyang Jiang, Dongsheng Li, Shuo Wang

原文摘要

Computer-use agents could automate repetitive screen-based clinical work, but their reliability in medical graphical user interfaces remains largely unvalidated. Existing benchmarks focus on general web or desktop tasks and underrepresent medical software, which requires domain knowledge, exhibits markedly different UI design from mainstream applications, lacks public testing environments, and demands safety validation beyond task completion. We introduce MedCUA-Bench, an interactive benchmark for clinical computer-use agents. It covers 18 clinical scenarios across 10 medical domains, reconstructed from real product manuals and open-source medical systems to capture authentic clinical interfaces while avoiding licensing and privacy constraints. Each task ships with paired intent- and step-level goals to disentangle clinical reasoning from UI execution, and is evaluated by a deterministic checker over task completion and five clinical safety dimensions. Across 23 agents, the best closed-source model reaches 54.2% strict success, while all models remain below 9% on the real OpenEMR. Open-source agents average only 2.5%, with the best reaching 16.2%. MedCUA-Bench exposes the gap between current agents and reliable clinical software use, providing a reproducible testbed for future research.

Performance Guarantees for Permissionless Lending

Nanqiao Wang, Jia Yuan Yu

原文摘要

We propose a lending protocol with far fewer risks than existing pool-based lending protocols (e.g., Aave, Compound). In our protocol, lenders and borrowers embody the spirit of decentralization by making competing interest-rate offers, resulting in the discovery of the prevailing interest rate through tâtonnement-like dynamics as opposed to taking rates partly determined by a central authority (e.g., Aave, Federal Reserve). We eliminate the risk of manipulation by creating loans with a fixed interest rate throughout the loan---like US Treasury bills. In particular, we further derive performance guarantees probabilities of repayment shortfall and liquidation by modeling the value of the collateral as a random walk, thus allowing participants to more efficiently manage their risk. To do so, we use characteristic functions and Fourier inversion to derive exact integral representations of the liquidation and repayment shortfall probabilities under the most general assumptions. We illustrate empirically this method by using Bitcoin as collateral and fitting its historical prices to Gaussian, Student-$t$, and symmetric stable Paretian distributions.

Mitigating Selection Bias in Large Language Models via Permutation-Aware GRPO

Jinquan Zheng, Jia Yuan, Jiacheng Yao East China Normal University, Chenyang Gu East China Normal University, Pujun Zheng East China Normal University, Guoxiu He East China Normal University

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) used for multiple-choice and pairwise evaluation tasks often exhibit selection bias due to non-semantic factors like option positions and label symbols. Existing inference-time debiasing is costly and may harm reasoning, while pointwise training ignores that the same question should yield consistent answers across permutations. To address this issue, we propose Permutation-Aware Group Relative Policy Optimization (PA-GRPO), which mitigates selection bias by enforcing permutation-consistent semantic reasoning. PA-GRPO constructs a permutation group for each instance by generating multiple candidate permutations, and optimizes the model using two complementary mechanisms: (1) cross-permutation advantage, which computes advantages relative to the mean reward over all permutations of the same instance, and (2) consistency-aware reward, which encourages the model to produce consistent decisions across different permutations. Experimental results demonstrate that PA-GRPO outperforms strong baselines across seven benchmarks, substantially reducing selection bias while maintaining high overall performance. The code is available on github (https://github.com/ECNU-Text-Computing/PA-GRPO).
