DiFuse: Fusing Native Diffusion Representations for Spatial Reasoning in Unified Multimodal Models

Ruixin Fan, Weining Wang, Jiahui Sun, Tailai Chen, Jing Liu

Unified multimodal models (UMMs) jointly support visual understanding and image generation, yet information flow between these two capabilities remains largely asymmetric: understanding representations routinely condition generation, whereas generative representations are rarely reused for multimodal reasoning. In this work, we investigate whether intermediate representations from a UMM's native diffusion branch can enhance spatial reasoning without compromising general multimodal understanding. We propose DiFuse, which selectively incorporates intermediate diffusion representations into the understanding pathway of UMMs. Through systematic layer-wise analysis, we identify which diffusion representations are most informative and where they can be integrated with minimal interference to semantic processing. Guided by these findings, DiFuse spatially aligns diffusion features with visual tokens and injects them into selected multimodal decoder layers via residual fusion. Extensive experiments on UniWorld-V1 show that, DiFuse consistently improves spatial reasoning over a matched SFT baseline while maintaining broadly comparable performance on general multimodal benchmarks. Further analyses show that these gains depend critically on the choice of diffusion representations, injection positions, and the preservation of spatial correspondence between diffusion features and visual tokens. Results on OmniGen2 further demonstrate the transferability of DiFuse across unified multimodal architectures. Overall, our findings show that native diffusion representations can provide complementary spatial cues for multimodal reasoning when selectively integrated in a structure-preserving manner.

Semantic-Enriched Latent Visual Reasoning

Tianrun Xu, Yue Sun, Qixun Wang, Jingyi Lu, Yuan Wang, Tianren Zhang, Longteng Guo, Fengyun Rao 等 11 位作者

Multimodal latent-space reasoning aims to replace explicit thinking with images by performing visual reasoning directly in a compact latent space. However, existing approaches largely rely on visual supervision and produce latent representations that lack sufficient semantic richness, limiting their ability to support diverse region-level reasoning tasks. In this work, we introduce Semantic-Enriched Latent Visual Reasoning (SLVR), a two-stage learning framework that enriches latent representations with attribute-level visual semantics and aligns them with diverse reasoning objectives. In the first stage, SLVR learns semantically enriched region-centric latents under fine-grained attribute supervision. In the second stage, we design Multi-query Group Relative Policy Optimization (M-GRPO) to align latent representations across multiple queries grounded in the same region. To support this framework, we construct SLV-Set, comprising approximately 400K region-level attribute annotations and 800K multi-query question answering samples, and introduce SV-QA, a benchmark that evaluates latent reasoning under semantic variation. Experiments demonstrate that SLVR improves the robustness and semantic consistency of latent visual reasoning compared to existing baselines.

DeCoRL: Decomposed Consistency Reinforcement Learning for Multi-Image Composition

Zhiqiang Wu, Shuang Sun, Jiale Zhang, Jing Li, Yibo Chen, Xu Tang, Yao Hu

Multi-image composition (MICo) is a critical yet challenging capability for large-scale image editing models, where consistency degrades rapidly as the number of reference images increases. While supervised fine-tuning (SFT) can equip models with basic MICo ability, it provides only implicit supervision on the composed image and often fails to learn reliable object-level correspondence across multiple references. We propose DeCoRL, a reinforcement-learning (RL) framework that improves MICo consistency by decomposing holistic MICo consistency into object-level consistency. DeCoRL first establishes instruction-relevant object correspondences across reference images and localizes the corresponding regions in the generated image. It then uses a VLM-based reward model trained on single-object consistency annotations to produce fine-grained, object-wise feedback, which is aggregated into a multi-object consistency reward to guide RL post-training. We further introduce DeCo-Bench, a benchmark covering compositions from 2 to 6 reference images. Experiments on DeCo-Bench and the public MICo-Bench demonstrate consistent improvements in MICo consistency.

Echoes as Anchors: Probabilistic Costs and Attention Refocusing in LLM Reasoning

Zhuoyuan Hao, Zhuo Li, Wu Li, Fangming Liu, Min Zhang, Jing Li

Recent work improves reasoning in large reasoning models (LRMs) by test-time scaling through self-consistency and parallel thinking, adding generic "thinking tokens", or presenting the question twice, as in re-reading (RE2). However, these approaches either inject task-agnostic tokens or mandate heuristics that do not explain, and often ignore, the spontaneous repetition that many LRMs exhibit at the head of their long chain-of-thought (CoT). In this work, we analyze and harness the model's tendency to restate the question, dubbed Echo of Prompt (EOP), as a front-loaded, compute-shaping mechanism, which can be viewed as self-generated prompt repetition inside the reasoning trace rather than in the input. Specifically, we formalize its probabilistic cost by casting echo removal as rejection-based conditioning, and define the Echo Likelihood Gap $Δ\mathcal{L}$ as a computable proxy linking early repetition to likelihood gains and downstream accuracy. We find that (1) in a causal intervention, reinserting an echo into failed GSM8K traces raises exact match by 7.9-10.4 points for two reasoning models but not for a non-reasoning base model; and (2) in length- and suffix-controlled likelihood analyses and layer-wise attention studies conducted to show that EOP's benefits go beyond verbosity, EOP increases answer to answer-prefix attention in middle layers, consistent with an attention refocusing mechanism. Building on these findings, we develop Echo-Distilled SFT (ED-SFT) to instill an "echo-then-reason" pattern through supervised finetuning, and training-free Echoic Prompting (EP) to re-ground the model mid-trace. We evaluate on GSM8K, MathQA, Hendrycks-MATH, AIME24, and MATH-500 under identical decoding settings and budgets, and find consistent gains over baselines, including thinking-token insertion. Our code is publicly released at https://github.com/hhh2210/echoes-as-anchors.

X2HDR: HDR Image Generation in a Perceptually Uniform Space

Ronghuan Wu, Wanchao Su, Kede Ma, Jing Liao, Rafał K. Mantiuk

High-dynamic-range (HDR) formats and displays are becoming increasingly prevalent, yet state-of-the-art image generators (e.g., Stable Diffusion and FLUX) typically remain limited to low-dynamic-range (LDR) output due to the lack of large-scale HDR training data. In this work, we show that existing pretrained diffusion models can be easily adapted to HDR generation without retraining from scratch. A key challenge is that HDR images are natively represented in linear RGB, whose intensity and color statistics differ substantially from those of sRGB-encoded LDR images. This gap, however, can be effectively bridged by converting HDR inputs into perceptually uniform encodings (e.g., using PU21 or PQ). Empirically, we find that LDR-pretrained variational autoencoders (VAEs) reconstruct PU21-encoded HDR inputs with fidelity comparable to LDR data, whereas linear RGB inputs cause severe degradations. Motivated by this finding, we describe an efficient adaptation strategy that freezes the VAE and finetunes only the denoiser via low-rank adaptation in a perceptually uniform space. This results in a unified computational method that supports both text-to-HDR synthesis and single-image RAW-to-HDR reconstruction. Experiments demonstrate that our perceptually encoded adaptation consistently improves perceptual fidelity, text-image alignment, and effective dynamic range, relative to previous techniques.

Knowledge-structured and evidence-aware semantic self-distillation for glomerular pathology foundation model

Qiming He, Jing Li, Zihan Wang, Tian Guan, Yifei Ma, Zimo Zhao, Yanxia Wang, Hongjing Chen 等 27 位作者

Visual foundation models learn rich pathological morphology but lack explicit concept-level supervision. Vision--language pretraining can provide this supervision but requires costly image--text pairs. Here, we introduce GloSAGE, a semantic self-distillation framework that uses lesion profiles predicted by a pretrained visual teacher to construct structured pathology descriptions. Reliability-guided selection identifies image--text anchors, while Knowledge-Structured Pathology Text Synthesis and Evidence-Guided Negative-pair Construction account for partially observed lesions. Image--text alignment trains projection layers while retaining the frozen visual encoder; an intermediate Semantic Transfer Layer supplies features for downstream tasks. Developed on GloMillion and evaluated across seven glomerulus- and case-level cohorts, GloSAGE supported zero-shot lesion recognition, image--text retrieval, hard-negative discrimination and concept-intervention analyses. It outperformed its source visual model in most lesion-recognition tasks and improved lesion grading, while supporting competitive case-level disease classification, injury grading and baseline renal function estimation. Ablations supported the combined contributions of knowledge-structured text and evidence-guided negatives, and the intermediate transfer layer improved mean lesion-recognition ROC-AUC relative to the complete projection output. A frozen language model conditioned on GloSAGE features generated glomerular descriptions. These findings suggest that teacher-derived lesion profiles can provide annotation-efficient semantic supervision for extending a glomerular visual foundation model.

Observational Equivalence of LLM and Human Annotation

Kentaro Nakamura, Jing Ling Tan, George Yean

In this paper, we show that humans and large language models (LLMs) are observationally equivalent in coding texts. Recent LLMs agree with attentive humans at rates comparable to those observed among humans, and cross-LLM disagreement concentrates on texts that also divide humans. We demonstrate these patterns through replications of text-classification tasks from 14 peer-reviewed political science studies, with 13 LLMs, three human coders (Ph.D. students), and 165 crowd coders, independently applying identical codebooks. We further find that clarifying an underspecified codebook increases agreement among humans and between humans and LLMs. Together, these findings point to ambiguity in texts and coding rules as a shared source of disagreement and challenge the presumption that human labels should take precedence whenever humans and LLMs differ. We therefore argue that the central challenge of text annotation is not simply choosing between humans and LLMs, but developing coding rules that minimize ambiguity and accounting for the ambiguity that remains. To this end, we propose using cross-LLM disagreement to identify difficult cases, guide human review, and refine codebooks, and we develop ambiguity-aware bounds for downstream inference without requiring ground truth for every text.

Bridging Search Intent and Tabular Data in Dataset Search

Wenjing Lin, Madelon Hulsebos

Dataset search remains a bottleneck in data analysis workflows, as existing systems largely rely on keyword matching or shallow retrieval that fail to capture user intent. To facilitate intent-driven search, we present two retrieval components to equip multi-faceted dataset search interfaces through natural language. First, we propose Hypothetical Schema Embeddings (HySE) that uses a language model to generate task-aligned hypothetical table schemas which are used for embedding-based retrieval, bridging the gap between intent and table content. We introduce KaggleDS, a corpus comprising 6,503 tables and diverse task-queries derived from Kaggle, and show that HySE consistently improves recall over strong keyword and embedding-based baselines, as well as over a dense table retriever fine-tuned on KaggleDS. We also show that HySE generalizes to end-to-end question answering on, for example, the NQ-Tables dataset, a corpus of 169,898 Wikipedia tables with human-written queries, where HySE improves Recall@10 by +6.0 pp over dense retrieval baselines. Second, we introduce FlexPrune, which translates dataset constraints expressed in natural-language into SQL predicates over a customizable metadata index, enabling filtering across arbitrary metadata attributes. Combined with HySE, FlexPrune increases Recall@10 by +6.0 pp over dense retrieval followed by tag-based filtering. Our results show that natural-language-based retrieval supporting task and metadata queries offers a viable alternative to schema-level keyword search in dataset search.

MAGIC: Multi-task Gaussian process for joint imputation and classification in healthcare time series

Dohyun Ku, Catherine D. Chong, Visar Berisha, Todd J. Schwedt, Jing Li

Time series analysis has emerged as an important tool for improving patient diagnosis and management in healthcare applications. However, these applications commonly face two critical challenges: time misalignment and data sparsity. Traditional approaches address these issues through a two-step process of imputation followed by prediction. We propose MAGIC (Multi-tAsk Gaussian Process for Imputation and Classification), a novel unified framework that simultaneously performs class-informed missing value imputation and label prediction within a hierarchical multi-task Gaussian process coupled with functional logistic regression. To handle intractable likelihood components, MAGIC employs Taylor expansion approximations with bounded error analysis, and parameter estimation is performed using EM algorithm with block coordinate optimization supported by convergence analysis. We validate MAGIC through two healthcare applications: prediction of post-traumatic headache improvement following mild traumatic brain injury and prediction of in-hospital mortality within 48 hours after ICU admission. In both applications, MAGIC achieves superior predictive accuracy compared to existing methods. The ability to generate real-time and accurate predictions with limited samples facilitates early clinical assessment and treatment planning, enabling healthcare providers to make more informed treatment decisions.

Venus-DefakerOne2: A Vision-Forensics Foundation Model with Broader Coverage

Chenfan Qu, Yachao Liang, Mingqi Fang, Jiangwei Xie, Zhenming Wang, Baoyue Zhang, Changjiang Jiang, Zheng Chang 等 30 位作者

Real-world forgery is inherently heterogeneous: it manifests not only as digital manipulation but also as physical spoofing, and is carried not only by images but also by videos. Despite substantial progress, a unified anti-forgery foundation model covering such a broad threat spectrum remains absent. In this paper, we present Venus-DefakerOne2, which substantially extends the forensic capability boundary along both the forgery-form and media-type dimensions. Trained on tens of millions of open-source and in-house samples, it incorporates two key designs. Tide-Style-Tuning alternates LoRA and full-parameter fine-tuning to balance computational efficiency, generalization, and hard-sample fitting while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Entropy-based Test Adaptation determines the optimal prediction modality by analyzing prediction entropy. Venus-DefakerOne2 achieves new state-of-the-art performance across a comprehensive suite of benchmarks, including DeepFake faces (96.7%), AI-generated images (93.3%), tampered documents (87.6%), manipulated natural images (89.6%), physical spoofs (93.1%), and AI-generated videos (96.0%). It significantly outperforms both specialized expert models and its predecessor, DefakerOne, establishing itself as a powerful and versatile foundation model for binary-decision forensic tasks.

BadTime: An Effective Backdoor Attack on Multivariate Long-Term Time Series Forecasting

Kunlan Xiang, Haomiao Yang, Wenbo Jiang, Haoxin Wang, Shiyue Huang, Shaofeng Li, Yijing Liu, Ji Guo

Multivariate long-term time series forecasting (MLTSF) models are increasingly deployed in critical domains such as climate, finance, and transportation. Despite their growing importance, the security of MLTSF models against backdoor attacks remains entirely unexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose BadTime, the first effective backdoor attack tailored for MLTSF. BadTime can manipulate hundreds of future predictions toward a target pattern by injecting a subtle trigger. BadTime addresses two key challenges that become particularly severe in MLTSF: (i) the rapid dilution of local triggers over long horizons, and (ii) the extreme sparsity of backdoor signals under stealth constraints. To counter dilution, BadTime leverages inter-variable correlations, temporal lags, and data-driven initialization to design a distributed, lag-aware trigger whose influence persists over long-range forecasts. To overcome sparsity, it mixes label-similar and label-dissimilar poisoned samples and adopts a decoupled backdoor training objective that explicitly up-weights the sparse backdoor signal, enabling reliable learning at a poisoning rate as low as 1%. Extensive experiments show that BadTime significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art backdoor attack on time series forecasting by extending the attackable horizon from at most 12 timesteps to 720 timesteps (a 60x improvement) and reducing the MAE on target variables by 57% on average, while changing the average clean forecasting error by less than 1%.

LiveSearch: Questions as Executable Verifier Code for a Live Benchmark of Professional-Source Financial Search Agents

Sinuo Wang, Wentao Zhao, Jiacheng Lu, Rui Sun, Beidi Luan, Qiming Shi, Jing Li, Daxin Jiang 等 9 位作者

In finance, the answer that matters is usually the current one: prices, rates, and disclosures hold only as of a given day, so retrieving up-to-date facts is a core capability of a financial agent. Yet most financial benchmarks overlook timeliness. They fix each answer at annotation time, so the gold goes stale as markets move and, once leaked into training data, rewards recall rather than search and analysis. We introduce LiveSearch, a live benchmark that stores each question as executable verifier code: a typed program of calls to a professional financial data service, followed by a declarative extractor. The question is frozen, while its gold answer is determined by executing the program against professional financial data at evaluation time, and a daily job re-executes it with no human or language model in the loop. A memorized answer is thus likely outdated, and a model must reach the current one through tools and analysis. Construction is equally automatic: a language model only verbalizes programs enumerated from real tool responses and never chooses an answer. Under general web search, six contemporary tool-calling models reach 70.9% to 76.7% answer accuracy. Over three consecutive days, 70% of served questions change their gold value, and even under tolerance-aware matching, a literally reused earlier snapshot fails on a majority of questions within a single day. Per-question tracking uncovers dynamic shifts in correctness masked by aggregate accuracy.

TriDifNet: A Unified Three-Task Diffusion Network for End-to-End RGB-T Perception

Qianchao He, Jing Liu, Yunhao Li, Xiaoqing Tian

Infrared--visible (IR--VIS) multi-modal perception supports robust scene understanding under challenging illumination. Infrared and visible images are often misaligned due to platform motion, viewpoint changes, and modality-dependent distortions, causing registration errors to propagate into subsequent fusion and detection stages. We propose TriDifNet, a unified three-task diffusion network for end-to-end RGB-T perception. To the best of our knowledge, TriDifNet is the first diffusion-based network that jointly optimizes registration, fusion, and detection for misaligned RGB-T pedestrian perception. TriDifNet consists of three diffusion-based modules, i.e., the Registration Diffusion Module (RegDM), the Fusion Diffusion Module (FusDM), and the Detection Diffusion Module (DetDM). RegDM aligns the unaligned infrared image to the optical reference by estimating a dense deformation field. FusDM performs residual conditional diffusion to generate a detection-oriented fused representation with optical structural cues and complementary infrared saliency. DetDM formulates pedestrian detection as an iterative denoising process in bounding-box space. To couple the three tasks, TriDifNet introduces a closed-loop optimization mechanism, where detection semantics guide fusion and registration, and the fusion result further regularizes geometric alignment. A stage-wise progressive training strategy and a lightweight Nash multi-task learning (Nash-MTL)-based late-stage refinement are further adopted to balance registration, fusion, and detection optimization. Extensive experiments on the KAIST multispectral pedestrian benchmark show that TriDifNet achieves superior downstream detection performance under misaligned RGB-T settings. Against strong system-level competitors, TriDifNet achieves 65.44\% Recall, 57.55\% mAP$_{50}$, and 26.83\% mAP$_{50:95}$.

AutoVend: Benchmarking LLM Agents on Long-Horizon Autonomous Vending Operations

Qiming Shi, Yikun Li, Beidi Luan, Rui Sun, Yan Ma, Jing Li, Daxin Jiang, Zuo Bai

Large language model (LLM) agents are extending agent-mediated commerce on the Web from shopping for consumers to operating businesses for sellers. In online-to-offline (O2O) commerce, decisions are issued through Web-based platforms but realized through costly physical execution. Evaluating such agents requires going beyond individual transactions to ask whether decisions made online turn into sustained economic returns. We introduce AutoVend, a benchmark in which one LLM agent manages 20 vending machines across five site types through a Web-based operating interface for 180 simulated days. Its data-grounded simulator combines a shared warehouse, procurement lead times, paid replenishment, inventory expiration, and recurring operating costs. We evaluate five LLM agents against a rule-based inventory-control baseline and diagnose their site coordination, execution, and performance over time. Four of five evaluated LLM agents fall short of this baseline, and returns per dollar of inference cost rank models differently from returns alone. Operational analyses show that gains in individual metrics do not consistently yield stronger economic growth, as inventory and execution costs erode these gains. Trajectory analysis further reveals difficulties in grounding feasible actions, managing inventory commitments, and converting feedback into effective policy revisions.

Proactive Memory for Event-Driven LLM Agents

Jinyang Li, Zichuan Fu, Xian Wu, Wenlin Zhang, Yimin Deng, Kaifeng Guo, Guojing Li, Junjia QI 等 9 位作者

Proactive LLM agents anticipate service opportunities from ongoing observations and accumulated history. Existing approaches emphasize recent context or retrieval of related memories, providing limited support for validating recurring behavioral regularities and assessing their applicability to the current event. We propose Proactive Memory (ProactMem), which organizes history into recent events, temporal trajectories, and behavioral regularities. Trajectory facts are checked against source events, and regularities are assessed through historical replay before being matched to current conditions. We also construct ProactiveStream, a longitudinal benchmark covering three application scopes, where agents process isolated event streams chronologically under episode-aware opportunity labels. On ProactiveStream, ProactMem achieves an overall effectiveness (F1) of 52.6%, a 21.4% relative improvement over the strongest of five external baselines. Code is available at: https://anonymous.4open.science/r/ProactMem-5351/.

RubricAtlas: Mining Type-Level Rubrics from Expert Reports to Evaluate Deep Research Agents

Delin Wang, Sinuo Wang, Rui Sun, Beidi Luan, Qiming Shi, Jing Li, Daxin Jiang, Zuo Bai

Deep research agents conduct multi-step Web searches and synthesise retrieved information into analytical reports. Evaluating these outputs requires checking which analyses they deliver, beyond the presence of relevant facts. Query-specific binary rubrics make individual requirements explicit, but task-level checklists may leave the overall analytical structure underexamined. We introduce RubricAtlas, which derives type-level analytical requirements from expert reports on different objects within the same research type and organises detailed checks around recurring analytical questions. The requirements give related tasks a shared standard for what to analyse, without prescribing their answers. Our framework links binary checkpoints to report passages and evaluates completeness separately from argument validity. Built from 3,079 Chinese financial research reports, RubricAtlas covers 99 research types. Reference-report selection experiments show that individual reports cover only about half of their type's analytical questions, and that selecting requirements from different reports changes evaluation scores and agent rankings. Across ten agents, two judge pipelines achieve checkpoint agreement of $κ$ = 0.71 and agent-ranking agreement of Kendall $τ$ = 0.87. Controlled deletions reduce scores on the affected analyses, while padding produces no detectable increase. These findings support type-level rubrics for comparing the analytical completeness of Web deep research outputs, with individual decisions traceable to report evidence.

FrameForge: Harnessing Priors of Video Foundation Models for Unified Image Generation

Yijing Lin, Zhendong Mao, Mengqi Huang, Yuxin Wang, Yongdong Zhang

Unified conditional image generation requires a single model to preserve different aspects of a visual input while producing a target image that follows textual guidance. Pretrained video models provide a promising foundation by encoding visual transformations across time, yet existing approaches typically assign the condition and target to fixed temporal positions. We observe that condition-target relationships vary substantially across generation tasks, while video models naturally encode visual transformations at different temporal scales. This motivates us to model conditional generation through input-adaptive virtual temporal relations. We propose FrameForge, which captures two complementary aspects of such relations. Mixture of Temporal Experts (MoTE) models how far the target lies from the condition by dynamically selecting temporal RoPE experts with different virtual intervals. Chain of Temporal Reasoning (CoTR) models how the condition is transformed into the target through a latent intermediate state, with a reasoning-bottleneck attention mask encouraging information propagation through this pathway. Experiments on DreamBench, COCO2017, and GEdit-Bench show that FrameForge achieves superior performance in subject-driven generation, canny-to-image generation, and image editing among the compared methods.

Labference: Benchmarking the Reasoning-Action Connection in Robotic Laboratories

Shitong Liu, Jingwei Zhang, Sheng Lian, Xinyu Zhuang, Kaiwen Guo, Quan Liu, Chunhai Zhao, Jiaxin He 等 20 位作者

Realizing Embodied AI for Science requires robots to translate experimental goals into reliable physical procedures, reducing hazardous and repetitive human work while generating evidence for scientific discovery. Although language-based planning and learned manipulation provide complementary capabilities, their integration requires robots to adapt subsequent operations to actual execution outcomes. For example, an unsuccessful placement changes what must be done next, even when the experimental goal remains unchanged. Existing benchmarks assess planning, manipulation, and laboratory workflows through task completion and reasoning or execution metrics; however, aggregate performance leaves the connection between outcome-dependent choices and physical execution unresolved. To address this evaluation gap, we introduce Labference, a benchmark for evaluating how observed physical outcomes guide subsequent choices and how those choices translate into robotic laboratory actions. Its evaluation protocol is designed to test outcome-dependent behavioral adaptation through controlled evidence variations, while independently measuring operation selection, physical execution, and task completion. Matched Oracle-assisted continuations from shared checkpoints then assess which forms of support improve subsequent choices and task completion. Initial weighing evaluations reveal target-selection errors in the tested VLA policies despite successful object transfers, whereas GPT-driven control achieves correct selection but encounters execution failures and substantial computation costs. Together, these findings highlight the need to connect task-appropriate reasoning with reliable, timely action. By making this connection measurable and diagnosable, Labference supports targeted improvements toward autonomous experimentation for Embodied AI for Science.

Not Every Agent Needs the Strongest Model: Unified Prompt-Model Optimization for Heterogeneous LLM-based Multi-Agent Systems

Mingxiu Cai, Haoyang Xian, Xinyu Ma, Yutong Wang, Zhenxi Song, Jing Li, Xuebo Liu

Large language model (LLM)-based multi-agent systems (MAS) rely on role-specific prompts and execution models to solve complex tasks collaboratively. However, prompt optimization typically keeps model assignments fixed, leaving differences in role requirements and their associated inference costs outside the search. We present UniMASO, a Unified framework for heterogeneous Multi-Agent System Optimization through the joint adaptation of prompts and model assignments. UniMASO evaluates candidate updates through local, downstream, and global feedback, using cost-aware Pareto search to retain useful quality-cost trade-offs. Topology-aware co-evolution then coordinates these updates according to agent roles and dependencies. Cross-level trajectory memory further supplies historical successes and failures to guide subsequent optimization. Experiments on five benchmarks and five execution topologies show that UniMASO achieves competitive task performance at substantially lower deployment cost than the strongest homogeneous configurations. Under centralized execution, it improves the average score from 69.79 to 70.40 while reducing token-weighted deployment cost by 85.2% relative to DeepSeek-V4-Pro with MASPO. These results support joint prompt-model adaptation as an effective approach to efficient multi-agent collaboration. The code is available at https://github.com/Achilles008/UniMASO_main.

Output Discipline Sets the Floor: A Falsification-Guided, Model-Agnostic Agent Protocol for Auditable Hypothesis-Driven Decision Making

Jing Liu, Yongxing Qi, Ping Yao, Ting Wu

What binds large language models on auditable, hypothesis-driven decision tasks, where every candidate can be checked against the evidence? On the public TCMEval-SDT benchmark for Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome differentiation (200 cases), the binding constraint is output discipline and reasoning structure, not model capability alone: two years of model scaling move zero-shot scores by only -0.03 to +0.08, while output-discipline failures (non-terminating reasoning, format non-compliance, large run-to-run spread) persist even in frontier models. We test this with a model-agnostic agent framework formalizing decision making as a five-stage closed loop, enforced by a candidate x evidence matrix falsification protocol: every candidate is judged against every evidence item, at least half of the candidates must be falsified before a conclusion is licensed, and survivors are emitted in a machine-verifiable single-line format. Across five base models, the effect is sign-conditional on zero-shot output discipline: it rescues models whose discipline fails (DeepSeek-V4-Flash: +0.267/+0.271, entirely termination rescue), reduces a high-variance model's run-to-run standard deviation from 0.218 to 0.007 (Kimi K3), and significantly costs already-disciplined models (-0.087 to -0.120 on budget-matched Qwen3-4B/32B). Ablations attribute the cost to the candidate-bounded format layer and show the effect is independent of injected knowledge content (protocol-knowledge decoupling). The protocol also transfers to misinformation-robust mathematical reasoning, detecting injected false premises at 89.8% recall with a 6.8% false-positive rate (MCC 0.54; a flag-everything baseline scores 0) and restoring accuracy to the no-misinformation ceiling. Where zero-shot output discipline is weak, the reasoning protocol sets the floor; base-model capability always sets the ceiling.

Xilai Ma, Liye Zhao, Weijun Yao, Haibing Di, Wenya Wang Nanyang Technological University, Jing Li Harbin Institute of Technology

Large Language Model (LLM) personalization aims to align model behaviors with individual user preferences.Existing methods often focus on isolated user histories, neglecting the essential role of inter-user differences. We propose C-BPO, a framework that personalizes LLMs via preference-calibrated binary signals.By treating target user data as positive feedback and other users’ data as an auxiliary set of implicit negative signals, C-BPO captures distinct inter-user differences. To mitigate the preference overlap issue, where shared task knowledge is erroneously penalized, we derive an objective grounded in Positive-Unlabeled (PU) learning theory. This approach purifies negative signals by subtracting “positive bias”, ensuring alignment with unique idiosyncrasies without compromising general helpfulness.Empirical experiments across various personalization tasks and backbone LLMs show C-BPO consistently outperforms baselines, demonstrating the efficacy of preference-calibrated binary signals in modeling inter-user differences.

Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM3) advances open-vocabulary segmentation through promptable concept segmentation, enabling users to segment all instances associated with a given concept using short noun-phrase (NP) prompts. While effective for concept-level grounding, real-world interactions often involve far richer natural-language instructions that combine attributes, relations, actions, states, or implicit reasoning. Currently, SAM3 relies on external multi-modal agents to convert complex instructions into NPs and conducts iterative mask filtering, leading to coarse representations and limited instance specificity. In this work, we present SAM3-I, an instruction-following extension of the SAM family that unifies concept-level grounding and instruction-level reasoning within a single segmentation framework. Built upon SAM3, SAM3-I introduces an instruction-aware cascaded adaptation mechanism with dedicated alignment losses that progressively aligns expressive instruction semantics with SAM3’s vision-language representations, enabling direct interpretation of natural-language instructions while preserving its strong concept recall ability. To enable instruction-following learning, we introduce HMPL-Instruct, a large-scale instruction-centric dataset that systematically covers hierarchical instruction semantics and diverse target granularities. Experiments demonstrate that SAM3-I achieves appealing performance across referring and reasoning-based segmentation, showing that SAM3 can be effectively extended to follow complex natural-language instructions without sacrificing its original concept-driven strengths. Code and dataset are available at https://github.com/debby-0527/SAM3-I.

MIND Your Reasoning: A Meta-Cognitive Intuitive-Reflective Network for Dual-Reasoning in Multimodal Stance Detection

Bingbing Wang, Zhengda Jin, Bin Liang The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Wenjie Li The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Jing Li The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Ruifeng Xu Harbin Institute of Technology, Min Zhang Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen and Harbin Institute of Technology

Multimodal Stance Detection (MSD) is a crucial task for understanding public opinion on social media. Existing methods predominantly operate by learning to fuse modalities. They lack an explicit reasoning process to discern how inter-modal dynamics, such as irony or conflict, collectively shape the user’s final stance, leading to frequent misjudgments. To address this, we advocate for a paradigm shift from learning to fuse to learning to reason. We introduce MIND, a Meta-cognitive Intuitive-reflective Network for Dual-reasoning. Inspired by the dual-process theory of human cognition, MIND operationalizes a self-improving loop. It first generates a rapid, intuitive hypothesis by querying evolving Modality and Semantic Experience Pools. Subsequently, a meta-cognitive reflective stage uses Modality-CoT and Semantic-CoT to scrutinize this initial judgment, distill superior adaptive strategies, and evolve the experience pools themselves. These dual experience structures are continuously refined during training and recalled at inference to guide robust and context-aware stance decisions. Extensive experiments on the MMSD benchmark demonstrate that our MIND significantly outperforms most baseline models and exhibits strong generalization.

Backdoors in RLVR: Jailbreak Backdoors in LLMs From Verifiable Reward

Weiyang Guo, Zesheng Shi Harbin Institute of Technology, Zeen Zhu Harbin Institute of Technology, Yuan Zhou Huawei Technologies Ltd., Min Zhang Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen and Harbin Institute of Technology, Jing Li Harbin Institute of Technology

Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) is an emerging paradigm that significantly boosts a Large Language Model’s (LLM’s) reasoning abilities on complex logical tasks, such as mathematics and programming. However, we identify, for the first time, a latent vulnerability to backdoor attacks within the RLVR framework. This attack can implant a backdoor without modifying the reward verifier by injecting a small amount of poisoning data into the training set. Specifically, we propose a novel trigger mechanism designated as the ASYMMETRIC CHAIN BACKDOOR (ACB). The attack exploits the RLVR training loop by assigning substantial positive rewards for harmful responses and negative rewards for refusals. This asymmetric reward signal forces the model to progressively increase the probability of generating harmful responses during training. Our findings demonstrate that the RLVR backdoor attack is characterized by both high efficiency and strong generalization capabilities. Utilizing less than 2% poisoned data in train set, the backdoor can be successfully implanted across various model scales without degrading performance on benign tasks. Evaluations across multiple jailbreak benchmarks indicate that activating the trigger degrades safety performance by an average of 73%. Furthermore, the attack generalizes effectively to a wide range of jailbreak methods and unsafe behaviors.

Enhanced Reasoning for Biomedical Document-Level Relation Extraction via a Novel Cascade Language Model Framework

Haohua Song, Wenhao Gu PromptBio, Zhijing Li, Yunwenyu, Tiantian Zhu Shenzhen University, Xiao Yang PromptBio Inc, Zexuan Zhu

Biomedical document-level relation extraction poses significant challenges beyond sentence-level tasks, as it necessitates the integration of evidence from entire documents and the ability for coherent cross-sentence reasoning. While pretrained language models (PLMs) demonstrate efficiency in handling local contexts, they often struggle with global dependency modeling. Conversely, large language models (LLMs) exhibit strong reasoning capabilities but tend to generate hallucinations in knowledge-intensive biomedical domains. This paper introduces CoRE, a novel cascade framework that leverages the complementary strengths of PLMs and LLMs through a detect-then-rethink paradigm. The PLM serves as an efficient detector for high-confidence relations, while challenging cases are forwarded to an LLM enhanced with semantic retrieval and iterative reasoning mechanisms. Experimental results on BioRED and CDR datasets show that CoRE achieves substantial improvements over state-of-the-art baselines, validating the effectiveness of the proposed cascade paradigm for complex biomedical relation extraction.

Vocabulary Hijacking in LVLMs: Unveiling Critical Attention Heads by Excluding Inert Tokens to Mitigate Hallucination

Yangneng Chen, Junlin Li, Weijun Yao, Xilai Ma, Guodong DU, Wenya Wang Nanyang Technological University, Jing Li Harbin Institute of Technology

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in multimodal tasks, yet their reliability is persistently undermined by hallucinations—generating text that contradicts visual input. Recent studies often attribute these errors to inadequate visual attention. In this work, we analyze the attention mechanisms via the logit lens, uncovering a distinct anomaly we term Vocabulary Hijacking. We discover that specific visual tokens, defined as Inert Tokens, disproportionately attract attention. Crucially, when their intermediate hidden states are projected into the vocabulary space, they consistently decode to a fixed set of unrelated words (termed Hijacking Anchors) across layers, revealing a rigid semantic collapse. Leveraging this semantic rigidity, we propose Hijacking Anchor-Based Identification (HABI), a robust strategy to accurately localize these Inert Tokens. To quantify the impact of this phenomenon, we introduce the Non-Hijacked Visual Attention Ratio (NHAR), a novel metric designed to identify attention heads that remain resilient to hijacking and are critical for factual accuracy. Building on these insights, we propose Hijacking-Aware Visual Attention Enhancement (HAVAE), a training-free intervention that selectively strengthens the focus of these identified heads on salient visual content. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that HAVAE significantly mitigates hallucinations with no additional computational overhead, while preserving the model’s general capabilities.

S^4: Operationalizing Speech Act Theory for Strategic Semi-Structured Psychiatric Interview

Guanqun Bi Tsinghua University, Zhoufu Liu, Zhuang Chen Central South University, Dazhen Wan Beijing Lingxin Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd, Xiyao Xiao, Minlie Huang

Psychiatric interviewing is a strategic, goal-oriented interaction that requires proactively steering the conversation to elicit latent information. However, existing methods often degenerate into rigid interrogation or aimless chitchat due to a lack of strategic planning. In this work, we introduce S4, a comprehensive framework grounded in Speech Act Theory, modeling the interview as a unified process of internal strategy (Illocution and Perlocution) and external realization (Locution). We synthesize a large-scale dataset with fine-grained psychiatric speech act annotations. Trained on this data, S4Dial employs reinforcement learning driven by long-term therapeutic effects to optimize the strategic chaining of atomic acts, aiming to maximally elicit information and maintain patient engagement. Experiments demonstrate that S4 significantly outperforms baselines, validating the effectiveness of our effect-driven strategic modeling.

M^3-VQA: A Benchmark for Multimodal, Multi-Entity, Multi-Hop Visual Question Answering

Jiatong Ma Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Longteng Guo Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yuchen Liu, Zijia Zhao, Dongze Hao, Xuanxu Lin Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jing Liu Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science

We present M^3-VQA, a novel knowledge-based Visual Question Answering (VQA) benchmark, to enhance the evaluation of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) in fine-grained multimodal entity understanding and complex multi-hop reasoning. Unlike existing VQA datasets that focus on coarse-grained categories and simple reasoning over single entities, M^3-VQA introduces diverse multi-entity questions involving multiple distinct entities from both visual and textual sources. It requires models to perform both sequential and parallel multi-hop reasoning across multiple documents, supported by traceable, detailed evidence and a curated multimodal knowledge base. We evaluate 16 leading MLLMs under three settings: without external knowledge, with gold evidence, and with retrieval-augmented input. The poor results reveal significant challenges for MLLMs in knowledge acquisition and reasoning. Models perform poorly without external information but improve markedly when provided with precise evidence. Furthermore, reasoning-aware agentic retrieval surpasses heuristic methods, highlighting the importance of structured reasoning for complex multimodal understanding. M^3-VQA presents a more challenging evaluation for advancing the multimodal reasoning capabilities of MLLMs. Our code and dataset are available at https://github.com/CASIA-IVA-Lab/M3VQA.

Spec-o3: A Tool-Augmented Vision-Language Agent for Rare Celestial Object Candidate Vetting via Automated Spectral Inspection

Minghui Jia, Qichao Zhang, Ali Luo NAOC,CAS, Linjing Li Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shuo Ye, Hailing Lu, Wen Hou NAOC, Dongbin Zhao Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Due to the limited generalization and interpretability of deep learning classifiers, the final vetting of rare celestial object candidates still relies on manually intensive expert visual inspection, which has become a primary bottleneck as modern spectroscopic surveys continue to scale. To bridge this gap, we propose Spec-o3, a tool-augmented vision-language agent that performs astronomer-aligned spectral inspection via interleaved multimodal chain-of-thought reasoning.Spec-o3 is trained with a two-stage post-training recipe: cold-start supervised fine-tuning on expert inspection trajectories followed by outcome-based reinforcement learning on rare-type verification tasks.Evaluated on five rare-object identification tasks from LAMOST, Spec-o3 establishes a new State-of-the-Art, boosting the macro-F1 score from 28.3 to 76.5 with a 7B parameter base model and outperforming both proprietary VLMs and specialized deep models. Beyond accuracy, Spec-o3 processes spectra at \sim0.2 s per sample on an 8\timesH100 server, a \sim50\times throughput gain over expert manual inspection. The agent also demonstrates strong generalization to unseen inspection tasks across survey shifts (from LAMOST to SDSS/DESI). Expert evaluations further confirm that its reasoning traces are coherent and physically consistent, supporting transparent and trustworthy decision-making.Code, data, and models are available at Project HomePage.

Reinforced Informativeness Optimization for Long-Form Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Yuhao Wang Nanyang Technological University, Ruiyang Ren, Yucheng Wang, Xin Zhao Renmin University of China, Jing Liu Baidu, Hua Wu, Haifeng Wang Baidu

Long-form question answering (LFQA) requires open-ended long-form responses that synthesize coherent, factually grounded content from multi-source evidence. This makes reinforcement learning (RL) reward design critical. The reward must be verifiable for faithful grounding and stable optimization. However, many standard rewards assume a unique target with an exact-match notion of correctness, which fits short-form QA and math but breaks in LFQA. As a result, current RAG systems still lack verifiable reward mechanisms, yielding unstable feedback signals and suboptimal optimization outcomes. We propose RioRAG, a framework for reinforced verifiable informativeness optimization. First, it defines informativeness as a measurable and externally verifiable objective for RL. Second, RioRAG uses nugget-centric verification with cross-source checks to enable self-evolution of smaller LLMs and to provide denser, action-discriminative rewards that mitigate reward sparsity and stabilize optimization. This formulation avoids handcrafted supervision for the policy model and strong teacher-model distillation, relying instead on externally verifiable feedback. Experiments on LongFact and RAGChecker show that RioRAG achieves higher factual recall and faithfulness, establishing verifiable reward modeling as a foundation for trustworthy long-form RAG. Our codes are available at https://github.com/RUCAIBox/RioRAG.
