Lossless Source Coding with Marginal Distribution Constraint

Cheuk Ting Li, Jun Chen, Shahab Asoodeh

We consider lossless source coding with a marginal distribution constraint on the encoding symbols (SC-MDC). Unlike distribution matching, signal shaping and homophonic coding which require the symbols to be (approximately) i.i.d. following a target distribution, SC-MDC requires each symbol to have a marginal distribution that exactly matches the target distribution, which can be regarded as a perfect perceptual quality constraint on the symbols, and may have applications to wear leveling, source coding with cost and steganography. We give nonasymptotic lower and upper bounds on the optimal encoding length, and exactly characterize the coding rate (or the first-order term of the length) when the source distribution or the target distribution is uniform, or when the source is an i.i.d. sequence.

Ab Initio Accuracy Beyond the Cutoff: Distributed Message-Passing Equivariant Attention at Tens-of-Millions-of-Atom Scale

Allex Kan, Ji Zhang, Hao Yin, Hao Li, Owen Fu, Xunxing Chen, Lin Huang, Zion Wang 等 13 位作者

Molecular dynamics predicts molecular motion from atomic forces and trajectory integration. Density functional theory (DFT) provides first-principles forces, but its $O(N^3)$ cost limits simulations to thousands of atoms; empirical force fields scale to millions but miss bond breaking and charge transfer. Equivariant message-passing Transformers learn the ab initio potential at linear cost. Stacked layers propagate information beyond a single cutoff, giving four layers a receptive field up to 23Å. At this frontier, scale is limited by communication: layers exchange boundary features across devices, force backpropagation repeats the exchange, and moving atoms change neighbor graphs and tensor shapes. We present Tessera, a distributed runtime that fixes workload shapes between rebuilds. It sorts atoms along a space-filling curve into equal-count shards, ensuring identical atom counts and tensor shapes per rank. Peer sets scale as $K^{0.5}$, not $K$. A conservative neighbor skin preserves topology across updates, enabling each rebuild interval to replay as one CUDA Graph. Fused kernels, three-level neighbor search, and overlapped All-to-All complete it. On 512 GPUs, Tessera sustains 30.7M atoms at 89.7% weak-scaling efficiency (77--90% across three per-GPU loads); per-step time rises 1.11--1.29x as machine and problem grow 16x. Graph reuse cuts full-step time $1.87\times$. Across an $8\times$ device increase, neighbor-search cost grows $1.7\times$, versus $3.0\times$ for Morton order. In a live $10.24$M-atom salt solution, NVE energy drift is $0.42\,μ$eV/atom/ps over $10$ ps, and structure matches a serial reference. A 10.06M-atom Norovirus capsid sustains 100 ps of NVT at $\approx 8$ ps/day on 256 A100 GPUs. Over 200,000 steps, it has no broken bonds or anomalously close pairs and uses three compiled variants, with no graph breaks or eager fallbacks.

分位数传播规划:面向预算受限的尾部风险评估

Quantile Propagation Planning for Budgeted Tail-Risk Evaluation

AI 速览:提出分位数传播规划(QPP),用少量固定扰动分位数经动力学传播并积分代价曲线,在有限模型评估预算下同时评估均值与尾部风险。

Risk-aware planning must identify rare, costly outcomes using only a limited number of model evaluations. Monte Carlo rollouts spend this budget on noisy tail estimates, while planning from the mean can miss the tail entirely. We introduce quantile propagation planning (QPP), which propagates a small, fixed set of disturbance quantiles through the dynamics and integrates the resulting cost curve to evaluate both mean and tail risk. The method is exact at the propagated levels, converges as the quantile grid is refined, and admits a one-sided conservatism guarantee under stated structural conditions. In controlled overload and inventory tasks, QPP reduces realized tail cost and constraint violations relative to mean-rollout planning. On overload, it remains competitive with sampled evaluators that use substantially more trajectories. These results position QPP as a transparent, budget-controlled approach to tail-risk evaluation.

VT-MUSE: Multimodal Unified Sequential Visuotactile Representation Learning for Manipulation

Congsheng Xu, Qiaochu Yang, Fangyuan Shi, Yifan Han, Baijun Chen, Yiming Wang, Haonan Zhao, Zhe Liu 等 12 位作者

We propose VT-MUSE, a Multimodal Unified SEquential representation learning framework for visuotactilemanipulation. Existing approaches often encode visual and tactile observations independently before fusion, limiting their ability to capture fine-grained cross-modal dependencies. Moreover, most methods focus on observations at the current time step and overlook the temporal evolution of contact. VT-MUSE addresses both limitations through a two-stage representation learning framework. In Stage I, modality specific encoders are jointly adapted via cross-modal temporal alignment and masked-view consistency. In Stage II, a conditional variational latent model processes masked visual sequences together with full tactile histories. Auxiliary decoders reconstruct the masked recent visual observations and predict tactile depth changes, encouraging the latent representation to retain both global visual context and local contact dynamics. The learned representation is subsequently integrated into a lightweight Transformer policy through gated cross-attention. On the simulation benchmark, VT-MUSE outperforms the strongest baseline evaluated on all tasks by 11 percentage points and also achieves substantial improvements in real-world experiments.

Rate-Distortion-Perception Tradeoff for Vector Gaussian Sources with Limited Common Randomness: Exact Characterization and Approximate Universality

Wentao Wang, Shuo Shao, Ruibin Li, Jingjing Qian, Jun Chen, Bin Xia

The distortion-rate-common randomness-perception (DRCP) theory characterizes how limited common randomness (CR) improves reconstruction fidelity under perceptual constraints, thereby providing an information-theoretic foundation for generative compression. In this paper, we characterize the DRCP tradeoff for vector Gaussian sources with limited CR under the squared-error distortion measure and the squared Wasserstein-2 perception measure. Specifically, we first establish a generalized reverse waterfilling characterization of globally optimal allocations. Second, we derive an analytical upper bound on the DRCP function through sequential greedy allocation of rate and CR. For fixed rate and CR budgets, the resulting representation is independent of the perception threshold. Finally, we establish its approximate universality through uniform performance guarantees: the achievable distortion exceeds the optimal distortion by at most $2ρ^*\approx0.2897$ times the total source variance, whereas the optimal-to-greedy distortion ratio is at least $η^*\approx0.7517$.

Multimodal Prompt Learning with Dual-Granularity Contrastive Alignment for Preoperative Prediction of Lung Adenocarcinoma Invasiveness Using 3D CT

Qing Huang, Xiaotong Tan, Lintong Yao, Wufeng Xue, Ruobing Huang, Dong Ni, Hao Wu, Tian Xiao 等 9 位作者

Accurate preoperative prediction of lung adenocarcinoma invasiveness is important for surgical planning and individualized treatment. However, overlapping CT appearances make it challenging to distinguish invasive adenocarcinoma (IAD) from Pre-IAD lesions. We propose a multimodal prompt-learning framework with dual-granularity image-text alignment for 3D CT-based IAD classification. A 3D ResNet-CBAM encoder extracts global and spatial visual features. A frozen RadBERT backbone is adapted with separate learnable prompts for report-level and keyword-level text encoding. These prompts are initialized using semantic representations derived from real-world clinical reports. Global contrastive alignment connects whole-volume CT representations with reports generated from clinician-annotated radiological attributes to provide overall semantic supervision. A multiple instance learning-based local alignment module associates spatial CT features with vascular-focused radiological keywords, to capture local imaging characteristics potentially associated with tumor invasion. The framework jointly optimizes classification and alignment objectives, while inference requires only CT images. Experiments included 1,593 pathologically confirmed nodules. On the test set, the proposed method achieved an accuracy of 87.92%, F1-score of 87.78%, and AUC of 0.9499. Its AUC significantly exceeded that of the image-only Res-CBAM baseline with the same visual backbone (0.9297; DeLong test, p = 0.0078). Ablation analyses supported the complementary contributions of global and local alignment and the benefit of report-based prompt initialization. Qualitative visualizations showed activation within nodules and adjacent vascular structures. These findings suggest that dual-granularity radiological supervision can enhance CT-based invasiveness prediction while preserving a CT-only inference workflow.

Bridging Static and Agentic RAG for Taiwanese Historical Question Answering

Kai-Hsin Chen, Wei-Yu Chen, Xuanjun Chen, Su-Ling Yeh, Jyh-Shing Roger Jang

Agentic retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) enables language models to adapt retrieval based on previously retrieved evidence, but it remains unclear whether such adaptive orchestration consistently outperforms well-designed static pipelines. We conduct a controlled comparison of agentic and static RAG for Taiwanese historical question answering, sharing the same generator and hybrid retrieval backend. Despite similar aggregate performance, the two pipelines differ on 70.83% of questions, with their advantages largely canceling out when averaged. An oracle that selects the better response per question improves the composite score by 0.2417 over the better individual pipeline, revealing substantial headroom for question-level selection. We therefore introduce a post-hoc selector that compares the two responses and their cited evidence, significantly outperforming either individual pipeline and recovering 60.34% of the oracle headroom. These results show that aggregate comparisons can obscure meaningful question-level differences between retrieval strategies, suggesting that exploiting their complementarity may be more fruitful than seeking a universally superior pipeline.

Reachability in Five-Dimensional Vector Addition Systems Is PSPACE-Complete

Weijun Chen, Bo Fu, Yuxi Fu

Vector addition systems (VAS) are a fundamental model of concurrent computation in which transitions update nonnegative integer counters by adding integer vectors, provided all counters remain nonnegative. Closely related to Petri nets, VAS are the single-state counterpart of vector addition systems with states (VASS), which use finitely many states to restrict the available transitions. A classical simulation of $d$-VASS by $(d+3)$-VAS connects their reachability problems, but the complexity-theoretic picture of fixed-dimensional VAS remains largely unclear. While reachability in $2$-VASS is PSPACE-complete under binary encoding, the best known upper bound for $5$-VAS was only elementary. We prove that every reachable $5$-VAS instance has a reachability witness of length polynomial in its unary size. Consequently, $5$-VAS reachability is NL-complete under unary encoding and PSPACE-complete under binary encoding. We also establish a polynomial factorization of the reachability relation of every $d$-VAS with $d \ge 3$. For $5$-VAS, this strengthens Hopcroft and Pansiot's effective semilinearity of reachability sets to the full reachability relation. For every fixed $d\ge3$, it also yields an $\mathsf F_d$ upper bound for reachability in $(d+3)$-VAS.

Ask to Evolve: A Unified Harness for Lifelong Embodied Navigation with Hybrid Action Space and Persistent Memory

Kai Sheng, Liuyi Wang, Jinlong Li, Haojie Dai, Chengju Liu, Qijun Chen

Giving embodied agents the freedom to act autonomously, initiate interactions, and understand their surroundings through experience is a step toward bringing them to life in the physical world. Realizing this vision requires action, interaction, and memory to work together, so that each encounter can inform current decisions and contribute experience for future tasks. We present EvoLife, a unified navigation harness that enables a multimodal embodied agent to choose how to move, when to ask, and what experience to carry forward. Its hybrid action space supports waypoint navigation, local discrete adjustments, pixel-based navigation, and object-directed navigation. Active interaction allows the agent to seek clarification or assistance when it encounters ambiguity or difficulty, while persistent spatial memory binds observations and dialogue to places, retaining useful experience to guide subsequent visits. We evaluate eight benchmarks across four task families: vision-language navigation, object navigation, interactive instance navigation, and continuous multi-task navigation. With an average of only 1.87 active interactions per episode, our method achieves a first-visit success rate (SR) of 100% across four 100-episode sets spanning vision-language navigation and object navigation. Complete-sequence SR reaches 98% on 50 LHPR-VLN sequences and 94% on 50 GOAT-Bench sequences. In the R2R revisit setting, success weighted by path length (SPL) increases from 82.23% to 93.31% with retained experience. Multi-day physical navigation further demonstrates exploration, proactive help-seeking, and revisiting remembered places. Together, these results advance the vision of bringing embodied agents to life through autonomous action, proactive interaction, and the accumulation and reuse of experience.

A Sharp Fisher-Information Inequality for Boolean Pairs: Proof of the Amari--Kobayashi Conjecture

Jun Chen, Shun Watanabe, Lei Yu

Consider two terminals that observe correlated uniform binary vectors and separately compress their observations to one bit. We prove that, for every blocklength and every correlation parameter in $(-1,1)$, the Fisher information retained by the resulting pair of bits is maximized by matching parity functions of an appropriate degree, thereby resolving a conjecture of Amari and Kobayashi. The proof combines a Fourier-based bound on the derivative of the normalized covariance with a scalar inequality for signed polynomials subject to a global range constraint.

Every Little Helps: Building Knowledge Graph Foundation Model with Fine-grained Transferable Multi-modal Tokens

Yichi Zhang, Zhuo Chen, Lingbing Guo, Wen Zhang, Huajun Chen

Multi-modal knowledge graph reasoning (MMKGR) aims to predict the missing links by exploiting both graph structure information and multi-modal entity contents. Most existing works are designed for a transductive setting, which learns dataset-specific embeddings and struggles to generalize to new KGs. Recent knowledge graph foundation models (KGFMs) improve cross-KG transfer, but they mainly exploit structural patterns and ignore rich multi-modal signals. We address these gaps by proposing a token-based foundation model (TOFU) for MMKGR, which exhibits strong generalization across different MMKGs. TOFU discretizes structural, visual, and textual information into modality-specific tokens. TOFU then employs a hierarchical fusion architecture with mixture-of-message mechanisms, aiming to process these tokens and obtain transferable features for MMKGR. Experimental results on 17 transductive, inductive, and fully-inductive MMKGs show that TOFU generally outperforms strong KGFM and MMKGR baselines, delivering strong performance on unseen MMKGs.

From Solver Trajectories to Teaching Trajectories: Cognition-Aligned Reasoning Distillation

Yashuo Luo, Qianren Mao, Ziqi Qin, Junnan Liu, Haitao Li, Qili Zhang, Yuan Gao, Zhijun Chen 等 9 位作者

Knowledge distillation from large reasoning models (LRMs) often uses raw teacher trajectories as supervision. However, this practice creates a mismatch between the goal of distillation and the nature of teacher trajectories. Advanced LRMs typically improve their reasoning capabilities through reward-driven post-training, such as RLHF. This training optimizes them as strong solvers, rather than as teachers that produce reasoning processes smaller models can easily learn. Since smaller models have different "cognitive capacities" compared to their larger teachers, directly imitating raw teacher trajectories can sometimes be ineffective and often requires a substantial number of high-quality samples. To bridge this mismatch, we propose Cognition-Aligned Reasoning Distillation (CARD), an RL-based framework that transforms solver trajectories into teaching trajectories aligned with the student's cognition. Avoiding expensive resampling, our framework directly transforms existing trajectories. We optimize CARD with two reward signals: (1) a Distribution Alignment Reward that matches the student's predictive distribution, and (2) a Logical Coherence Reward that reduces misleading failed reasoning steps. Comprehensive evaluations across multiple student models and settings demonstrate that CARD outperforms distillation from raw teacher trajectories in in-domain settings while achieving substantial gains in out-of-distribution performance. Code is available at https://github.com/LiteSSLHub/CARD.

On the Fundamental Limits of Bistatic ISAC Over Vector Channels

Dongsheng Peng, Lei Yu, Ping Chen, Jun Chen

This paper studies the fundamental limits of bistatic integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems over vector channels. We first consider a class of parallel channels in which, on each component channel, the channel from the transmitter (Tx) to the communication receiver (Rx) is degraded with respect to the channel from the Tx to the sensing Rx, or vice versa, where the direction of degradation may vary across component channels. For this class of channels, we establish matching achievability and converse results, which yield a single-letter characterization of the capacity-distortion function $C(D)$. For parallel Gaussian channels with additive Gaussian states, the evaluation of the capacity-distortion-power function $C(D,P)$ under the squared error distortion measure reduces to a joint power and distortion allocation problem across the component channels. We then extend the analysis to general vector channels and derive single-letter lower and upper bounds on $C(D)$. In particular, for vector Gaussian channels with additive Gaussian states, we prove the optimality of Gaussian superposition coding without requiring a global degradation order between the communication and sensing channels, by combining the channel enhancement technique with a matrix extremal inequality based on Fisher information. This leads to an exact characterization of $C(D,P)$.

On the Architectural Complexity of Neural Networks

Nicholas J. Cooper, François G. Meyer, Michael L. Roberts, Carlos Zapata-Carratalá, Lijun Chen, Danna Gurari

We introduce a unified theoretical framework for the rigorous analysis and systematic construction of deep neural networks (DNNs). This framework addresses a gap in existing theory by explicitly modeling the structure of tensor operations -- lower level information that is often abstracted. Our framework enables two novel objectives: (1) analysis of the evolution of architectural complexity over deep learning history, and (2) automatic construction of novel architectures based on new types of tensor operations. Our study of DNNs introduced over the past 40 years reveals a connection between groundbreaking architectures and increases in different types of architectural complexity. Moreover, we identify several large classes of higher complexity architectures that have not yet been explored. We then collect a dataset of 3,000+ higher complexity architectures, which we publicly release at: https://github.com/combinatoriallabs/ArchitecturalComplexity.

V$^3$AST-Bench: Verifiable, Valid, and Versatile Safety Evaluation for Coding Agents

Weitao Feng, Hengheng Xiong, Zihao Zeng, Jun Chen, Jiyang Guan, Xiaofeng Wang, Jialing Tao, Hui Xue 等 9 位作者

Large language models increasingly act through code, modifying repositories, executing programs, and interacting with services in agent form. Their actions introduce risks that cannot be assessed from generated responses alone. Safety evaluation must verify actual consequences, distinguish harm avoidance from task incapability, and cover realistic workflows. We introduce V$^3$AST-Bench, a benchmark for Verifiable results, Valid interpretation, and Versatile risk coverage of Agent Safety. It comprises 212 risk tasks spanning 18 categories. Dedicated runtime environments verify harm and task outcomes through executable checks over states, records, and artifact behavior, while paired capability twin tasks verify workflow competence. Our experiments span 51 combinations of 11 models and five harnesses, spanning 86,496 trials and over 9 billion tokens of model interaction. Results show that V$^3$AST-Bench remains challenging even for frontier coding agents, as Claude Opus 4.8 with Claude Code still causes verified harm on 20.9% of tasks. Across model-harness combinations, agents with comparable competence exhibit markedly different safety outcomes, showing that task capability alone does not guarantee safe execution. More importantly, even explicit recognition of risks does not reliably prevent harmful actions, revealing a critical gap between risk awareness and safe execution. These findings highlight the need to move beyond risk recognition toward enforcing safety throughout execution.

Full-data accuracy with fewer labels for training and fine-tuning machine-learning force fields

Sheng Bi, Yi-Ze Wang, Jun Cheng

Machine-learning force fields (MLFFs) are reliable only near their training distribution, making efficient construction of diverse training sets a major bottleneck for both train-from-scratch and foundation fine-tuning workflows. Active learning can reduce this cost, but standard model-committee uncertainty is impractical for foundation MLFFs because each committee member requires a separate fine-tuning run. We present an active-learning workflow based on last-layer-projection regression (LLPR), a forward-pass-cheap per-configuration uncertainty estimator. Across molecular, condensed-phase, and electrolyte systems, LLPR identifies compact, high-value training sets that recover full-data accuracy using only a small fraction of electronic-structure labels. In foundation-model fine-tuning, LLPR-selected configurations approach the practical fine-tuning ceiling with substantially fewer labels than random selection. In iterative electrolyte fine-tuning, LLPR detects unphysical local coordination before new labelling, calibrates uncertainty in force-error units, and supports retrospective convergence monitoring. The resulting models reproduce reference density and Li--O coordination structure, providing a scalable uncertainty-quantification strategy across MLFF training regimes.

PBFuzz: Agentic Directed Fuzzing for PoV Generation

Haochen Zeng, Andrew Bao, Jiajun Cheng, Chengyu Song

Proof-of-Vulnerability (PoV) input generation is a critical task in software security and supports downstream applications such as bug reproduction and patch validation. Generating a PoV input requires solving two sets of constraints: (1) reachability constraints for reaching vulnerable code locations, and (2) triggering constraints for activating the target vulnerability. Existing approaches, including directed greybox fuzzing and LLM-assisted fuzzing, struggle to efficiently satisfy these constraints. This work presents an agentic method that mimics human experts. Human analysts iteratively study code to extract semantic reachability and triggering constraints, form hypotheses about PoV triggering strategies, encode them as test inputs, and refine their understanding using debugging feedback. We automate this process with an agentic directed fuzzing framework called PBFuzz. PBFuzz tackles four challenges in agentic PoV generation: autonomous code reasoning for semantic constraint extraction, custom program-analysis tools for targeted inference, persistent memory to avoid hypothesis drift, and property-based testing for efficient constraint solving while preserving input structure. Experiments on the Magma benchmark show strong results. PBFuzz triggered 57 vulnerabilities, surpassing all baselines, and uniquely triggered 17 vulnerabilities not exposed by existing fuzzers. PBFuzz achieved this within a 30-minute budget per target, whereas conventional approaches were allotted 24 hours. Median time-to-exposure was 339 seconds for PBFuzz versus 8,680 seconds for AFL++ with CmpLog, giving a 25.6x efficiency improvement with an API cost of 1.83 USD per vulnerability. In real-world applications, PBFuzz reproduced three FFmpeg 1-day CVEs that had no public PoVs and identified three previously unknown Bento4 vulnerabilities.

ASTRA: Adaptive Semantic Tree Reasoning Architecture for Complex Table Question Answering

Xiaoke Guo, Songze Li, Zhiqiang Liu, Zhaoyan Gong, Yuanxiang Liu, Huajun Chen Zhejiang University and ZJU-Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Center, Wen Zhang Zhejiang University

Table serialization remains a critical bottleneck for Large Language Models (LLMs) in complex table question answering, hindered by challenges such as structural neglect, representation gaps, and reasoning opacity. Existing serialization methods fail to capture explicit hierarchies and lack schema flexibility, while current tree-based approaches suffer from limited semantic adaptability. To address these limitations, we propose ASTRA (Adaptive Semantic Tree Reasoning Architecture) including two main modules, AdaSTR and DuTR. First, we introduce AdaSTR, which leverages the global semantic awareness of LLMs to reconstruct tables into Logical Semantic Trees. This serialization explicitly models hierarchical dependencies and employs an adaptive mechanism to optimize construction strategies based on table scale. Second, building on this structure, we present DuTR, a dual-mode reasoning framework that integrates tree-search-based textual navigation for linguistic alignment and symbolic code execution for precise verification. Experiments on complex table benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance.

Temp-R1: A Unified Autonomous Agent for Complex Temporal KGQA via Reverse Curriculum Reinforcement Learning

Zhaoyan Gong, Zhiqiang Liu, Songze Li, Xiaoke Guo, Yuanxiang Liu, Xinle Deng, Zhizhen Liu, Lei Liang 等 10 位作者

Temporal Knowledge Graph Question Answering (TKGQA) is inherently challenging, as it requires sophisticated reasoning over dynamic facts with multi-hop dependencies and complex temporal constraints. Existing methods rely on fixed workflows and expensive closed-source APIs, limiting flexibility and scalability. We propose Temp-R1, the first autonomous end-to-end agent for TKGQA trained through reinforcement learning. To address cognitive overload in single-action reasoning, we expand the action space with specialized internal actions alongside external action. To prevent shortcut learning on simple questions, we introduce reverse curriculum learning that trains on difficult questions first, forcing the development of sophisticated reasoning before transferring to easier cases. Our 8B-parameter Temp-R1 achieves state-of-the-art performance on MultiTQ and TimelineKGQA, improving 19.8% over strong baselines on complex questions. Our work establishes a new paradigm for autonomous temporal reasoning agents. The code is available at https://github.com/zjukg/Temp-R1.

A Data-Efficient Path to Multilingual LLMs: Language Expansion via Post-training PARAM\Delta Integration into Upcycled MoE

Hao Zhou, Tianhao Li, Zhijun Wang, Shuaijie She, Linjuan Wu, Hao-Ran Wei, Baosong Yang, Jiajun Chen 等 9 位作者

Expanding Large Language Models(LLMs) to new languages is a costly endeavor, demanding extensive Continued Pre-Training(CPT) and data-intensive alignment. While recent data-free merging techniques attempt to bypass alignment by fusing a multilingual CPT-enhanced model with its instruct counterpart, they are plagued by a critical trade-off: mitigating parameter conflicts to preserve original abilities inevitably dilutes new language acquisition, and vice-versa. To resolve this conflict, we introduce , which upcycles a dense model into a Mixture-of-Experts(MoE) architecture, allocating different experts to different languages. Alignment ability is then transferred by grafting a MoE-expanded parameter delta(\Delta_{\text{instruct}}) to the CPT-enhanced base model, bypassing the complex alignment phase. Experiments demonstrate ’s superiority even against baselines with similar FLOPs or number of parameters; it improves performance on expanded languages while effectively preserving original capabilities. We further show our approach is highly applicable across different models and Post-training deltas.

Improving Long-Context Translation via Self-Supervised Dual Learning

Shanbo Cheng ByteDance Inc., Shuaijie She, Yu Bao ByteDance Research, Jianbing Zhang Nanjing University, Jiajun Chen, Shujian Huang Nanjing University

Large language models (LLMs) with long context windows offer the potential to translate entire documents in a single pass, yet they frequently suffer from catastrophic information distortion, undermining the strict faithfulness required for translation. This challenge is compounded by the scarcity of document-level parallel data, which makes both supervised fine-tuning and reliable evaluation prohibitively expensive. We propose LongDu, a self-supervised post-training framework that improves long-document translation reliability via round-trip consistency. Given monolingual documents, LongDu samples multiple candidate translations, back-translates each candidate, and optimizes the model to prefer translations that best reconstruct the source. To make this signal robust for long-form generation, we design a reward that filters trivial failure modes (e.g., copying and local language drift) before applying a reconstruction and fluency score, enabling stable reinforcement learning without human annotations. We additionally introduce Long-CIRT, an automatic evaluation protocol that quantifies information distortion by measuring how much a LLM’s performance degrades after a translation cycle. Across multiple base models, LongDu substantially improves information retention and translation quality, with gains that generalize beyond the training length range and to unseen target languages.

Agentic Test-Time Scaling (TTS) has delivered state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on complex software engineering tasks such as code generation and bug fixing. However, its practical adoption remains limited due to significant computational overhead, primarily driven by two key challenges: (1) the high cost associated with deploying excessively large ensembles, and (2) the lack of a reliable mechanism for selecting the optimal candidate solution—ultimately constraining the performance gains that can be realized. To address these challenges, we propose Entropy-Guided Stepwise Scaling (EGSS), a novel TTS framework that dynamically balances efficiency and effectiveness through entropy-guided adaptive search and robust test-suite augmentation.Extensive experiments on SWE-Bench-Verified demonstrate that EGSS consistently boosts performance by 5–10% across all evaluated models. Specifically, it increases the resolved ratio of Kimi-K2-Intruct from 63.2% to 72.2%, and GLM-4.6 from 65.8% to 74.6%. Furthermore, when paired with GLM-4.6, EGSS achieves new state-of-the-art among open-source large language models. In addition to these accuracy improvements, EGSS reduces inference-time token usage by over 28% compared to existing TTS methods, achieving simultaneous gains in both effectiveness and computational efficiency.

Currently, large language models (LLMs) have significant limitations in spatial reasoning, particularly in the absence of visual input. To address this issue, we introduce SODA (Spatial OODA), which draws inspiration from the OODA cognitive loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act), originally designed to enhance human decision-making in dynamic environments. Specifically, we embed the OODA loop into multiple control tasks, generating the SPOD-143k dataset, and successfully integrate it into LLMs through a two-phase and spatia-aware training strategy (SFT and GRPO). Furthermore, to fill the gap in evaluating spatial reasoning in purely text-based LLMs, we introduce the SPOD-Bench benchmark, including multiple tasks divided into three levels of difficulty. Experimental results show that SODA significantly enhances the spatial reasoning capabilities of LLMs across testing scenarios including SPOD-Bench, SPACE and applications, providing a replicable and effective paradigm for improving the spatial cognition of LLMs.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in socially sensitive domains, yet their unpredictable behaviors, ranging from misaligned intent to inconsistent personality, pose significant risks. We introduce SteerEval, a hierarchical benchmark for evaluating LLM controllability across three domains: language features, sentiment, and personality. Each domain is structured into three specification levels: L1 (what to express), L2 (how to express), and L3 (how to instantiate), connecting high-level behavioral intent to concrete textual output. Using SteerBench, we systematically evaluate contemporary steering methods, revealing that control often degrades at finer-grained levels. Our benchmark offers a principled and interpretable framework for safe and controllable LLM behavior, serving as a foundation for future research.

Why Steering Works: Toward a Unified View of Language Model Parameter Dynamics

Ziwen Xu Zhejiang University, Chenyan WU Zhejiang University of Technology, Hengyu Sun, Haiwen Hong Alibaba Group, Mengru Wang, Yunzhi Yao Zhejiang University, Longtao Huang Alibaba Group, Hui Xue 等 12 位作者

Methods for controlling large language models (LLMs), including local weight fine-tuning, LoRA-based adaptation, and activation-based interventions, are often studied in isolation, obscuring their connections and making comparison difficult. In this work, we present a unified view that frames these interventions as dynamic weight updates induced by a control signal, placing them within a single conceptual framework. Building on this view, we propose a unified preference-utility analysis that separates control effects into preference, defined as the tendency toward a target concept, and utility, defined as coherent and task-valid generation, and measures both on a shared log-odds scale using polarity-paired contrastive examples. Across methods, we observe a consistent trade-off between preference and utility: stronger control increases preference while predictably reducing utility. We further explain this behavior through an activation manifold perspective, in which control shifts representations along target-concept directions to enhance preference, while utility declines primarily when interventions push representations off the model’s valid-generation manifold. Finally, we introduce a new steering approach guided by this analysis that improves preference while better preserving utility.

Can We Predict Before Executing Machine Learning Agents?

Jingsheng Zheng, Jintian Zhang, Yujie Luo, Yuren Mao, Yunjun Gao Zhejiang University, Lun Du Ant Group, Huajun Chen Zhejiang University and ZJU-Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Center, Ningyu Zhang Zhejiang University

Autonomous machine learning agents have revolutionized scientific discovery, yet they remain constrained by a Generate-Execute-Feedback paradigm. Previous approaches suffers from a severe Execution Bottleneck, as hypothesis evaluation relies strictly on expensive physical execution. To bypass these physical constraints, we internalize execution priors to substitute costly runtime checks with instantaneous predictive reasoning, drawing inspiration from World Models. In this work, we formalize the task of Data-centric Solution Preference and construct a comprehensive corpus of 18,438 pairwise comparisons. We demonstrate that LLMs exhibit significant predictive capabilities when primed with a Verified Data Analysis Report, achieving 61.5% accuracy and robust confidence calibration. Finally, we instantiate this framework in ForeAgent, an agent that employs a Predict-then-Verify loop, achieving a 6x acceleration in convergence while surpassing execution-based baselines by +6%.

KnowRL: Exploring Knowledgeable Reinforcement Learning for Factuality

Baochang Ren, Shuofei Qiao Zhejiang University, Ningyu Zhang Zhejiang University, Da Zheng Ant Group, Huajun Chen Zhejiang University and ZJU-Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Center

Slow-thinking Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong reasoning capabilities but often suffer from severe hallucinations due to an inability to recognize their knowledge boundaries. Existing Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches typically rely on outcome-oriented rewards, which can inadvertently reinforce fabricated reasoning paths when the final answer is correct. To address this, we propose Knowledge-enhanced RL, KnowRL, a framework that integrates factual supervision directly into the reasoning process. By decomposing the chain of thought into atomic facts and verifying them against the corresponding ground-truth knowledge, KnowRL performs fine-grained checks to encourage models to reason faithfully. Crucially, this process-oriented supervision teaches the model to identify its knowledge boundaries, learning to say “I don’t know” instead of fabricating answers when information is missing. Experimental results demonstrate that KnowRL effectively mitigates hallucinations—reducing the Incorrect Rate on SimpleQA by 20.3% for distillation-based slow-thinking models while maintaining strong performance on complex reasoning benchmarks like GPQA and AIME 2025. Furthermore, our method shows robust transferability to out-of-distribution tasks, indicating that the model learns a generalizable verification behavior.

Illusions of Confidence? Diagnosing LLM Truthfulness via Neighborhood Consistency

Haoming Xu, Ningyuan Zhao, Yunzhi Yao Zhejiang University, Weihong Xu, Hongru Wang, Xinle Deng, Shumin Deng Zhejiang University, Jeff Z. Pan University of Edinburgh, University of Edinburgh 等 10 位作者

As Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in real-world settings, correctness alone is insufficient. Reliable deployment requires maintaining truthful beliefs under contextual perturbations. Existing evaluations largely rely on point-wise confidence like Self-Consistency, which can mask brittle belief. We show that even facts answered with perfect self-consistency can rapidly collapse under mild contextual interference. To address this gap, we propose Neighbor-Consistency Belief (NCB), a structural measure of belief robustness that evaluates response coherence across a conceptual neighborhood. To validate the efficiency of NCB, we introduce a new cognitive stress-testing protocol that probes outputs stability under contextual interference. Experiments across multiple LLMs show that the performance of high-NCB data is relatively more resistant to interference. Finally, we present Structure-Aware Training (SAT), which optimizes context-invariant belief structure and reduces long-tail knowledge brittleness by approximately 30%.

From Recognition to Reasoning: Benchmarking and Enhancing MLLMs on Real-World Receipt Document Understanding

Yandi Wang, Libin Zhan Zhejiang University, Ziwei Huang, Tiancheng Luo, Yuxuan Jiang, Wang Dong Zhejiang University, Leilei Gan Zhejiang University, Jun Chen Zhejiang University

Extracting structured information from visual documents (Visual Information Extraction, VIE) is a cornerstone of business automation. While recent Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have shown promising capabilities, existing benchmarks suffer from critical limitations in scale and realism, lack semantic granularity, and fail to cover diverse document types. To bridge this gap, we introduce ReceiptBench, a large-scale, human-annotated benchmark consisting of 10k diverse receipts, organizing information extraction into four hierarchical sub-tasks: (1) Basic Perception for raw text spotting, (2) Format Normalization for strictly following standardization instructions, (3) Semantic Reasoning for inferring implicit attributes from context, and (4) Structure Parsing for handling nested line items. Furthermore, we propose a two-stage training framework incorporating Metric-Aware Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), which translates rigorous evaluation constraints into reinforcement learning signals to enhance structural consistency. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method yields state-of-the-art performance, surpassing leading proprietary models on complex reasoning tasks. We release our datasets and code at https://github.com/wwwT0ri/ReceiptBench.

VoxMind: An End-to-End Agentic Spoken Dialogue System

Tianle Liang, Yifu Chen Zhejiang University, Shengpeng Ji HY LLM Team, Yijun Chen, Zhiyang Jia, Jingyu Lu, Fan Zhuo, Xueyi Pu 等 10 位作者

Recent end-to-end spoken dialogue models enable natural interaction. However, as user demands become increasingly complex, models that rely solely on conversational abilities often struggle to cope. Incorporating agentic capabilities is therefore essential: by enabling tool use, these models can extend their knowledge boundaries and better solve real-world tasks. Yet, existing research has largely concentrated on core perception and generation, with comparatively limited exploration of such tool-augmented extensions. To bridge this gap, we present VoxMind, an integrated framework designed to equip end-to-end spoken dialogue models with comprehensive agentic abilities. Leveraging our curated 470-hour AgentChat dataset, we incorporate a “Think-before-Speak” mechanism, enabling the model to internalize structured reasoning as a critical prerequisite for planning and response generation. Furthermore, to mitigate latency bottlenecks caused by large-scale tool integration, we propose a Multi-Agent Dynamic Tool Management architecture. By asynchronously delegating retrieval tasks to an auxiliary agent aligned with the main model’s reasoning trajectory, this system effectively decouples inference latency from toolset size. Experimental results confirm that VoxMind achieves significant improvements in agent performance: compared with strong baselines, the task completion rate increases from 34.88% to 74.57%, outperforming Gemini-2.5-Pro on spoken agent tasks while preserving general conversational quality. The source code and associated data are publicly available at https://github.com/MM-Speech/VoxMind.
