Reward Budgeting Reduces Premature Convergence in Reinforcement Learning for LLM Reasoning

Mengni Jia, Mengyu Zhou, Xiaoxi Jiang, Guanjun Jiang

原文摘要

RL for LLM reasoning often reaches an early performance plateau as the policy distribution becomes increasingly sharp. Recent work has studied policy entropy as both a diagnostic and a control signal for this behavior. In our experiments, however, increasing entropy alone does not reliably change the eventual plateau. We analyze RL through its implicit target policy and derive a sharpness factor $κ$, together with an effective counterpart $κ_{\mathrm{eff}}$, that describes how strongly reward or advantage gaps are translated into probability-ratio gaps. Motivated by this view, we introduce reward budgeting, a plug-in advantage construction that assigns a fixed total reward budget to each prompt. For binary rewards and independent on-policy rollouts, its unclipped score-function estimator follows the gradient of an exact finite-$G$ concave objective with diminishing returns, while its advantage gap decreases as more rollouts become correct. For general rewards, a shifted log-mean interpretation holds asymptotically under the stated regularity conditions. These results motivate, rather than establish exact objective equivalence for, the clipped implementations. On Qwen3-8B and Llama3.2-3B-Instruct, reward budgeting consistently improves a range of RL baselines, with gains up to +12.50 on AMC23 and +10.00 on AIME24 and AIME25. Overall, our results support an update-dynamics view of premature convergence and show that strong gains can be obtained without explicitly preserving entropy.

Rethinking the Unsupervised Paradigm in Time Series Anomaly Detection: An Empirical Study and Minimalist Baseline

Zhijie Zhong, Zhiwen Yu, Kaixiang Yang, Yongheng Liu, Jun Jiang, C. L. Philip Chen

原文摘要

Time series anomaly detection (TSAD) research predominantly focuses on unsupervised architectures to model normal data dynamics under label scarcity. However, practical deployments frequently archive historical operational incidents, questioning whether continuous unsupervised architectural scaling remains the most cost-effective pursuit. In this paper, we empirically quantify the trade-offs between supervisory signals and model complexity. We introduce STAND, a deliberately minimalist supervised baseline based on bidirectional recurrent encoding. Across five benchmark datasets evaluated under a strictly disjoint out-of-sample temporal protocol, minimalist supervised models achieve competitive or superior accuracy relative to complex unsupervised alternatives. Furthermore, controlled label-scaling and few-shot evaluations confirm that these supervisory advantages persist under constrained historical event budgets, while STAND exhibits higher prediction certainty and sharper event delineation than reconstruction-based baselines. These findings encourage the TSAD community to complement algorithmic complexity with data-centric label utilization when annotations are accessible. The source code, benchmark datasets, and an extended Supplementary Document are publicly available at https://emorzz1g.github.io/STAND.

ProtoFusion: Protocol-Guided Prompt Refinement for Generative Infrared and Visible Image Fusion

Pengwei Liang, Junjun Jiang, Junhui Hou

原文摘要

Infrared and visible image fusion integrates complementary information from both modalities to provide a more comprehensive representation of the scene. We propose ProtoFusion, a protocol-guided generative framework for infrared and visible image fusion. Instead of relying on fixed fusion operators, hand-crafted objectives, or manually specified one-shot prompts, ProtoFusion formulates fusion as protocol-constrained generation. It represents fusion intent with a structured protocol, consisting of environment state cards, grounding principles, and a style profile, which explicitly specifies which evidence should be preserved or suppressed and which properties the fused result should satisfy. To optimize this protocol, we introduce protocol-guided prompt refinement, a closed-loop learning framework that iteratively performs generation, evaluation, and revision under multimodal evidence. Once learned, the optimized protocol is fixed at inference time and directly guides fusion generation. To address residual source inconsistencies, we further incorporate structured belief construction, which organizes modality reliability, scene evidence, and cross-modal conflicts into a structured representation for conservative correction after generation. Extensive experiments on standard benchmarks show that ProtoFusion improves quantitative performance, achieves favorable results in aesthetic evaluation, and produces visually coherent fusion outputs. ViP-Rig: Visual-Prompted Controllable Rigging

原文摘要

Rigging is inherently task-dependent because the same mesh may require different skeletons and deformation behaviors across animation tasks. In practice, artists often inspect an initial rig and repeatedly edit its skeletal structure and deformation behavior to meet specific animation requirements. Existing automatic methods primarily generate a plausible rig from geometry, offering limited explicit control over the resulting skeleton and deformation behavior. In this work, we present ViP-Rig, a visual-prompted framework that supports both prompt-first rigging and result-guided editing by injecting features extracted from user-drawn or edited 2D skeletal and rigidity prompts into frozen pretrained backbones. Specifically, ViP-Rig consists of two stages, Skeleton Generation and Skinning Prediction. In the first stage, the skeletal sketch is processed by the Dense-to-Compact Visual Prompt Encoding to produce compact, fixed-length conditioning tokens. The resulting tokens are injected into a frozen pretrained autoregressive generator through gated adapters to control joint placement and branching structure while preserving the generator's geometric prior. In the second stage, the rigidity map is processed using the same visual encoding design, while the pretrained skinning backbone remains frozen. The resulting tokens are symmetrically injected into the point and joint streams to modulate point-joint compatibility and the resulting skinning weights. Experiments on Articulation-XL2.0 and zero-shot evaluation on ModelsResource show that ViP-Rig more accurately recovers target skeletons and skinning weights than geometry-conditioned baselines under prompt-guided evaluation. Qualitative results further demonstrate explicit and localized control in both prompt-first rigging and result-guided editing.

MiCoPro: End-to-End Mixed Precision HW/SW Co-design with HW-aware Proxy Model

Zijun Jiang, Yangdi Lyu

原文摘要

Quantized Neural Networks~(QNN) with low-bitwidth data have proven promising in efficient storage and computation on edge devices. To mitigate accuracy degradation while maximizing speedup, layer-wise mixed-precision quantization~(MPQ) becomes a popular solution. However, existing algorithms for exploring MPQ schemes are limited in flexibility and efficiency. Comprehending the complex impacts of different MPQ schemes on post-training quantization and quantization-aware training results is a challenge for conventional methods. Furthermore, an end-to-end framework for the optimization and deployment of MPQ models is missing in existing work. To address these challenges, we propose the MiCo framework, a holistic MPQ exploration and deployment framework for edge AI applications. The framework adopts a novel optimization algorithm to search for accuracy-optimal quantization configurations under strict latency constraints. We further extended the framework to MiCoPro, which introduces a robust Hardware-Aware Proxy (HAP) model to enhance prediction accuracy and hardware versatility. By leveraging target-specific latency modeling, MiCoPro enables rapid exploration and direct deployment from PyTorch models to bare-metal C code. We demonstrate the versatility of our framework on both the BitFusion accelerator and SIMD-extended RISC-V processors, achieving up to 40\% of latency reduction with less than 3\% of accuracy drop.

Live-OPSD: On-Policy Self-Distillation for Proactive Streaming Large Video Models

Kaixuan Du, Xin Wan, Dai Guan, Ming Chen, Xiaoxi Jiang, Guanjun Jiang

原文摘要

Streaming multimodal assistants must make response decisions while events are still unfolding. They need to recognize when the available evidence warrants a response, produce an appropriate continuation, and remain silent otherwise. Supervised fine-tuning learns from recorded assistant turns, but does not directly train on the response prefixes produced by the evolving policy itself. We introduce Live-OPSD, an on-policy self-distillation method that uses privileged hints available only during training to supervise the policy on its own outputs. The policy first generates a continuation from the streaming context alone. The same model then re-evaluates that continuation with a hint describing the relevant evidence, and the resulting distributions guide the unhinted policy. On Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B, Live-OPSD attains an average score of 59.64 on LiveProBench, 5.26 points above the strongest continued-SFT baseline, and stays competitive on OVO-Bench (65.84). These results indicate that guiding the policy on its own outputs with privileged hints improves both when and how a streaming assistant responds.

Markovian Linguistic-Temporal Bridge: Unlocking the Potential of LLMs for Time Series Forecasting

Siming Sun, Kai Zhang, Xuejun Jiang, Wenchao Meng Zhejiang University, Qinmin Yang

原文摘要

Adapting pretrained Large Language Models (LLMs) for time series forecasting primarily relies on token-level linguistic-temporal alignment, leading to the stacking of logically disjointed tokens as input. While empirically effective, these methods overlook a fundamental capability of LLMs: modeling linguistic logic and structure, rather than merely processing token features. To address this limitation, we propose the \textbf{M}arkovian-\textbf{G}uided \textbf{S}tructure-\textbf{A}ware \textbf{A}lignment (\textbf{MGSAA}). Our core contribution is a framework that transcends pointwise feature matching to achieve global structural isomorphism between the linguistic and temporal domains. Specifically, MGSAA distills latent evolutionary patterns of language within LLMs into a Markovian state transition graph, which is transferred as a structural prior to the time series domain. Under this prior, time series patches are decoded into latent states and then aligned via state-constrained cross-attention. Ultimately, MGSAA generates a token sequence topologically isomorphic to the LLM’s inherent mental structure, reactivating its reasoning capabilities for forecasting. Comprehensive evaluations across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that MGSAA achieves state-of-the-art performance, providing an innovative solution for cross-modal alignment in LLM for time series forecasting. 原文摘要

Hallucination remains a critical bottleneck for large language models (LLMs), undermining their reliability in real-world applications, especially in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems. While existing hallucination detection methods employ LLM-as-a-judge to verify LLM outputs against retrieved evidence, they suffer from inherent confirmation bias, where the verifier inadvertently reproduces the errors of the original generation. To address this, we introduce Multi-Agent Reinforced self-Check for Hallucination (MARCH), a framework that enforces rigorous factual alignment by leveraging deliberate information asymmetry. MARCH orchestrates a collaborative pipeline of three specialized agents: a Solver, a Proposer, and a Checker. The Solver generates an initial RAG response, which the Proposer decomposes into claim-level verifiable atomic propositions. Crucially, the Checker validates these propositions against retrieved evidence in isolation, deprived of the Solver’s original output. This well-crafted information asymmetry scheme breaks the cycle of self-confirmation bias. By training this pipeline with multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), we enable the agents to co-evolve and optimize factual adherence. Extensive experiments across hallucination benchmarks demonstrate that MARCH substantially reduces hallucination rates. Notably, an 8B-parameter LLM equipped with MARCH achieves performance competitive with powerful closed-source models. MARCH paves a scalable path for factual self-improvement of LLMs through co-evolution. The code is at https://github.com/Qwen-Applications/MARCH.
